Resumen

AbstractIn this article, I consider how local oral history narratives provide smallholder farmers with both material and symbolic resources in adapting to climate change. I draw from the case study of an agrarian village in Madagascar that was struck by a destructive category 3 cyclone. In the weeks following the storm, oral history knowledge occupied an increasingly visible role within the community, as younger farmers interacted with elders to hear tales of past storms. Through these shared accounts, people discussed specific techniques on how to cope with environmental uncertainty. They also created a sense of shared history, which provided individuals across generations an entry point into the local historical record. Overall, the process of sharing oral history accounts can contribute to community resilience, with resiliency encompassing not only technical or ecological factors, but also the more affective realms of shared legacies, hope and belonging.

Resumen

Introduction Unmet oral health needs remain a significant issue among immigrant adolescents, often exacerbated by experiences of racial discrimination. This study aimed to examine the associations between perceived discrimination and oral health behaviours in adolescents with immigrant backgrounds and explore the potential moderating role of resilience on this association. Methods Ethical approval for this cross-sectional study was obtained from the University of Alberta Research Ethics Board. Participants were 12 to 18-year-old adolescents from immigrant backgrounds. Participants were recruited through nine community organizations using a snowball sampling technique. After obtaining active parental consent and assent from the adolescent, the participants completed a questionnaire covering demographics, oral health behaviours, and perceived racial discrimination and resilience. Perceived racial discrimination and resilience were measured using validated scales. Descriptive statistics summarized variables. Logistic regression assessed associations, controlling for confounding factors. Resilience’s moderating impact was analyzed via the interaction model of regression analysis. Results In this cross-sectional study of 316 participants, average age of 15.3 (SD = 1.9) years, and a median age of 15 years (Inter Quartile Range-12-18), 76% reported discrimination experiences. Adjusted analysis showed that an increase of one unit in the total discrimination distress score was associated with 51% less likelihood of categorizing self-rated oral health as good (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.29–0.81). The odds of brushing teeth more than twice a day, as opposed to once a day, decreased by 58% with one unit increase in the total discrimination distress score (OR = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.25–0.71). The odds of visiting the dentist for an urgent procedure instead of a regular check-up were 2.3 times higher with a unit increase in the total discrimination distress score (OR = 2.3: 95% CI:1.3–4.0) Resilience did not moderate the observed association. Conclusion Perceived racial discrimination was associated with the pattern for dental attendance, tooth brushing frequency, and self-rated oral health. Resilience did not moderate the observed association.

Objectives: This study aims to examine the associations among immigrant status, resilience, and perceived oral health for Chinese American older adults in Hawaii. Method: Data derived from 430 Chinese American adults aged 55 years and older residing in Honolulu, HI. We compared the self-rated oral health and oral health problems between U.S.-born Chinese Americans and foreign-born Chinese Americans by using ordered logistic regression and ordinary least squares regression models. Results: Findings suggest that immigrant status and lower levels of resilience are associated with poorer self-rated oral health and more oral health problems for Chinese American older adults in Hawaii. Resilience is more strongly associated with self-rated oral health for U.S.-born Chinese American than for foreign-born Chinese Americans, but this pattern was not evident for oral health problems. Discussion: Older Chinese American immigrants in Hawaii are disadvantaged in terms of their oral health. Understanding their susceptibilities may lead to targeted interventions.

Resumen

The literature on psychological and social responses to cleft palate and craniofacial conditions focuses on the challenges and limitations posed by biological factors, cognitive status, and social stigma. In spite of the various challenges experienced by persons with these conditions, many individuals have rich and satisfying lives. This paper develops a theoretical perspective to elucidate factors that account for health, life success, and resiliency in persons with craniofacial conditions. Three steps are proposed to change how craniofacial conditions are envisioned by clinicians and researchers: (1) creating optimism and positivity around the time of birth and diagnosis, (2) asking children and parents new and different questions, and (3) launching a new craniofacial social science model for research built around understanding resilience and health.

Objectives To investigate associations between oral health and psychological factors (i.e., depression, anxiety, and resilience) in a group of Chinese individuals who had sought an intervention online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods For this cross-sectional study, online questionnaires were created using online survey software from set items of instruments commonly used to assess depression, anxiety, and resilience combined with an oral health survey. The study was conducted from March 13 to 16, 2020. Results 568 participants (188 men and 380 women) with a mean ± SD age of 41.7 ± 10.2 years were included in the analyses. In total, 152 (27%) participants were from Beijing, 149 (26%) from Wuhan, 110 (19%) from Shenyang, and 157 (28%) from other Chinese cities. Halitosis and bleeding gums were the most common reasons for individuals to seek an intervention. Compared with other cities, participants from Wuhan showed higher anxiety and depression and worse previous oral health. Resilience mediated the relationship between depression and oral health, but not between anxiety and oral health. Conclusion We hope that the data from this study will inform clinical practitioners and demonstrate that mental health awareness and resilience training are important strategies that may mitigate the negative impact of lockdown and isolation on oral health.

Abstract Improving the oral health of older immigrants is a critical public health priority in the United States. However, the role of children’s support in this context has received limited attention. This study aims to investigate the relationship between support from adult children and perceived oral health among both foreign-born and U.S.-born Chinese Americans. Additionally, we explore the mediating role of resilience. We analyzed data from a sample of 377 Chinese American older adults aged 55 or older in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Utilizing structural equation models, we compared self-rated oral health and oral health problems between foreign-born and U.S.-born Chinese Americans. For foreign-born participants, greater emotional support from children was directly associated with better perceived oral health. Furthermore, this emotional support was indirectly linked to perceived oral health through resilience. In contrast, for U.S.–born Chinese Americans, financial support from children was directly related to worse perceived oral health. This study provides evidence for resilience pathways that connect social support from children to older immigrants’ oral health. Encouraging adult children in Chinese immigrant families to educate their older relatives about oral diseases and dental care can enhance the oral health-related quality of life for older Chinese immigrants.

Abstract Very few studies have compared oral health status between the US-born and foreign-born immigrant older adults. Using data collected among 430 Chinese older adults age 55+ residing in Hawai’i, we examined the association between immigrant status and oral health related quality of life (OHQoL) and the moderating role of resilience in linking the association. Controlling for some key covariates, our study results show that US-born Chinese immigrant older adults had better OHQoL than their foreign born counterparts. Factors such as higher level of education (graduate degree or higher), better self-reported health status and no significant tooth loss were related to better OHQoL. The association between immigrant status and OHQoL was moderated by resilience. Specially, resilience was positively and significantly associated with OHQoL among U.S.-born older adults but not among the foreign-born ones. Our findings indicate the importance of immigration and resilience in shaping oral health outcomes among older Chinese Americans.

Resumen

Background There is an intersection between oral and mental health though the studies on these intersections are few. This study investigated associations between self-reported oral health problems, quality of oral health, and depression and general anxiety among adolescents and adults in Nigeria; and analysed the moderating effects of resilience and self-esteem on these associations. Methods In this secondary analysis, data were extracted from the database of an online survey conducted among participants 13 years and older and living in Nigeria about their self-reported psychological wellbeing. The data was collected between September and October 2020. Dependent variables were self-reported presence of oral health problems (yes/no) and self-reported quality of oral health (using a five-item scale ranging from “very good” to “very poor”). Independent variables were depressive and anxiety symptoms. Moderating factors evaluated were resilience and self-esteem. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the associations between the dependent and independent variables after adjusting for confounders (age, sex, employment status and educational status). A path analysis was conducted to determine the moderating effects of self-esteem and resilience on associations between dependent and independent variables. Results We extracted data for 2,757 adolescents and adults aged 13 to 62 years, of which 2,062 (74.8%) reported having oral health problems and 925 (33.6%) reported poor quality of oral health. Higher levels of depressive symptoms were significantly associated with higher odds of oral health problems (AOR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.04–1.10; p<0.001). Higher levels of depressive symptoms (AOR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.03–1.07; p<0.001), and higher levels of anxiety symptoms (AOR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.04–1.11; p<0.001) were significantly associated with poor quality of oral health. Resilience significantly moderated the association between anxiety symptoms and oral health problems (AOR = -0.004; 95% CI: -0.006 –-0.001; p = 0.002). Conclusion Depression may be a risk indicator for self-reported oral health problems, while depression and anxiety appear to be risk indicators for self-reported poor quality of oral health. These factors could be included as confounders in future studies on oral health problems and quality of oral health among adolescents and adults in Nigeria.

Abstract Poor oral health has been associated with decreased quality of life, various non-communicable diseases, and a higher risk of mortality. There is also evidence that older immigrants and those who have been in the US for less than 5 years are more likely to have periodontitis, a serious gum disease and a common oral health condition. Despite this evidence, there is a paucity of studies investigating the influence of acculturation, immigration-related experiences, and resilience on oral health among older Filipino immigrants. To address this significant knowledge gap, a mixed methods study using a survey and focus group interviews was conducted among community-dwelling Filipino immigrants aged 60 years and older. This poster will present the results of the survey (N=103), which used a socio-demographic questionnaire, as well as valid and reliable instruments such as the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index, A Short Acculturation Scale for Filipino Americans, Everyday Discrimination Scale, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. The results of the regression analysis revealed that the perception of discrimination and resilience were significantly associated with the perception of oral health among the participants surveyed [F(10,92) = 1.985, p < 0.05]; this regression model accounted for 18.6% of variance in the perception of oral health. The findings support the need for culturally sensitive interventions that could optimize oral health, including the utilization of dental care services for this underserved population.

Resumen

Abstract When confronted with a major physical stressor, some older adults are able to recover to baseline with minimal changes, while others undergo irreversible declines. The ability to adapt and recover well from physical stress is called physical resilience and may be impeded by altered glucose-insulin dynamics. Among 55 participants in the pilot phase of the Study of Physical Resilience IN Geriatrics(SPRING), we examined associations between metabolic syndrome and/or diabetes status to physical resiliency recovery parameters after the clinical stressors total knee replacement and bone marrow transplant. These parameters included health outcomes, functional recovery, and pain in the weeks after the intervention. Additionally, we hypothesized that less resilient individuals would have abnormal glucose and insulin responses to a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test at 0, 30, 60, 120 minutes and tested this in a subset (n=40) without known diabetes. Exploratory analyses of this pilot study will be presented during this session.

Resumen

Abstract Resilience has been conceptualized within international development as the ability to “return to a state of equilibrium” after exogenous shocks. For many Indigenous communities, however, there is no equilibrium to which to return. This article explores how the federally unrecognized Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe (NCRNT) has developed a creative strategy of resilience beyond a return to “equilibrium” in the face of their almost complete erasure by genocide and the illegal termination of their sovereign rights by US state and federal government agencies. The NCRNT’s experience reveals how activities underlying Indigenous resilience include a need for historical redress and reconciliation, thereby creating a “new normal” that is reflective of Native history as well as the ongoing social, political, and economic realities of existing within a settler state. This article bridges history and development studies, revealing how both disciplines must learn from Indigenous groups seeking restorative justice. It further employs oral histories, artwork, and documentation from the newly created NCRN Tribal archive, and so is presented as an interactive digital article.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is no difference between stainless steel and low-nickel stainless steel wires as regards mechanical behavior. Force, resilience, and elastic modulus produced by Quad-helix appliances made of 0.032-inch and 0.036-inch wires were evaluated. METHODS: Sixty Quad-helix appliances were made, thirty for each type of alloy, being fifteen for each wire thickness, 0.032-in and 0.036-in. All the archwires were submitted to mechanical compression test using an EMIC DL-10000 machine simulating activations of 4, 6, 9, and 12 mm. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with multiple comparisons and Tukey's test were used (p < 0.05) to assess force, resilience, and elastic modulus. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference in the forces generated, resilience and elastic modulus were found between the 0.032-in 0.036-in thicknesses (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Appliances made of low-nickel stainless steel alloy had force, resilience, and elastic modulus similar to those made of stainless steel alloy.

Resumen

Language disorder is one of the most common childhood problems. The results of epidemiology studies are estimating that 1 in 12 preschoolers has a language disorder. The consequences of unresolved speech and language problems are significant and lead over time to behavioral disorders, mental health problems, reading difficulties, and school failure, including truancy and school dropout. Hence, we consider imperative raising awareness of this issue in the educational environment. Several studies reported an increased prevalence of social and emotional problems among children with written or spoken language disorders. Furthermore, a large body of research has demonstrated positive effects of school interventions in developing resilience strategies among children with language disorders. Accordingly, based on the results of previously conducted research of language disorders, this article presents a brief review of frequently associated social, emotional, and behavioral problems and reviews particular aspects of school interventions, which may contribute to students’ socio-emotional resilience.

Resumen

Stem cell transplantation (SCT) is associated with oral microbial dysbiosis. However, long-term longitudinal data are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to longitudinally assess the oral microbiome in SCT patients and to determine if changes are associated with oral mucositis and oral chronic graft-versus-host disease. Fifty allogeneic SCT recipients treated in two Dutch university hospitals were prospectively followed, starting at pre-SCT, weekly during hospitalization, and at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months after SCT. Oral rinsing samples were taken, and oral mucositis (WHO score) and oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (NIH score) were assessed. The oral microbiome diversity (Shannon index) and composition significantly changed after SCT and returned to pre-treatment levels from 3 months after SCT. Oral mucositis was associated with a more pronounced decrease in microbial diversity and with several disease-associated genera, such as Mycobacterium, Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus. On the other hand, microbiome diversity and composition were not associated with oral chronic graft-versus-host disease. To conclude, dysbiosis of the oral microbiome occurred directly after SCT but recovered after 3 months. Diversity and composition were related to oral mucositis but not to oral chronic graft-versus-host disease.

Abstract The history of Rapa Nui has often been told as a cautionary tale meant to reflect on the destructive tendencies of our own civilization, but it looks quite different when told from a Rapanui perspective. This interdisciplinary study uses new source materials to explore an extraordinary story of Native resilience: seldom-used oral histories from Rapanui elders from the 1910s, a Rapanui-language account of its original settlement, and a newly reconstructed Rapanui Chronology of Years, as well as the latest physical data of environmental change on the island, reconstructions of the ancient night sky, and an innovative model of the historical productivity of traditional crops. They reveal the exact stars and winds the ancient Rapanui followed to locate this island originally; their embrace of new crop varieties, animals, and cultivation methods to ensure their subsistence; and their vulnerability to severe droughts and climate change. Rapanui resilience experienced its greatest test during the 1860s and 1870s when interethnic conflict, a punishing La Niña drought, introduced diseases, plantation enslavement, Catholic missionization, and colonization by outsiders struck the island in waves. But Rapanui elders remembered these events as much for their tenacious resistance and resilience to these challenges as for their tragic loss.

Abstract There is a lack of empirical evidence on self-reported discrimination and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Further, the mechanism linking the two constructs is not well understood. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-reported discrimination and OHRQoL and investigate resilience as a mediator in such a relationship among foreign-born older Chinese Americans. Data came from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago collected between 2017 and 2019. The working sample included 3,054 foreign-born Chinese Americans (60+ years of age). Mediation analysis was conducted to examine the direct and indirect pathways towards OHRQoL. Self-reported discrimination was directly and indirectly associated with poorer OHRQoL. Resilience mediated the relationship between self-reported discrimination and OHRQoL. Specifically, individuals experienced discrimination reported weaker resilience, and subsequently, reported poorer OHRQoL. Findings illustrate the importance of studying self-reported discrimination in relation to OHRQoL and further identify resilience as an intermediary pathway to promote OHRQoL.

The aim is to analyze protective and modifying factors (e.g., vulnerability, resilience, sense of coherence) in relation to the utilization of dental services by seniors at different levels of the healthcare system. Terminological imprecision in the use and transfer of existing terms (sense of coherence, resilience, salutogenesis) to gerodontology is clarified. Factors influencing a reduced utilization (static/dynamic factors) can occur isolated or in combination and, thus, model the risk of a reduced utilization of dental services (influencing-factor mechanism). Protective factors of utilization include patient-specific factors for self-motivation and factors that promote oral-health-related resilience. Resistance forces that counteract can be identified as oral-health-related resilience factors. Achieving social and individual appreciation and establishing a prevention-oriented approach to utilization will be increasingly challenging, since the population is becoming older and access is not equal in terms of opportunity. Resistance forces need to be strengthened in an ethical context. Studies should increasingly present resilience processes, determinants and modes of action at the various interfaces in the healthcare system, which can ensure sustainable medical care in old age. The concepts conveyed here are generally valid and able to point out inequalities and ageism in access to dental services.

Objective: The purposes of this study were to investigate self-reported social experience in 10-year-old children born with a cleft lip and/or palate and to gain a better understanding of variables implicated in psychosocial resilience. Design: Cross-sectional study of 10-year-old children from five consecutive birth cohorts, born from 1992 to 1997. Participants: A total of 268 children treated by the Oslo cleft team (Norway) participated in the study. The children's cleft conditions included cleft lip and palate, cleft lip alveolus, cleft palate, and submucous cleft palate. Outcome Measures: Psychosocial resilience was measured with the Child Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). Other variables were obtained during a clinical interview with the child. Cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial functioning was measured with the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC). Satisfaction with appearance was assessed through the use of the Satisfaction with Appearance Scales (SWA). Informants were both children and parents. Results: Cleft types differed significantly with respect to subtype and frequency of additional difficulties. Psychosocial resilience was associated with adequate emotional functioning, high satisfaction with appearance, and a lower frequency of reported teasing. Child characteristics such as visibility of cleft, gender, and additional diagnosis did not contribute to explain psychosocial resilience. Conclusions: Results reported here emphasise the importance of assessing the child's subjective report of satisfaction with appearance and psychosocial experience.

Resumen

The transformation of folklore as oral literature is often used for traditional performances. Its function is to strengthen the resilience of a local culture. This research aims to gain better knowledge about the transition process of traditional theatre performances to increase the awareness of the local community. The method used in this research uses a qualitative approach with an explanatory analytical approach and focuses on a multidisciplinary approach that comes from the theory of several branches of science. The results obtained from this study, namely the oral literature of the archipelago, have an important role in historical knowledge. The use of oral literature in stage performances makes a simple story more complex, one of which is manifested in the performing arts of the Dolalak dance. The conclusion that can be drawn is that the transformation of folklore as oral literature into stage performances provides a spiritual experience for the community because it is packaged interestingly through the dance movements. This article will contribute to the use of oral literature as a source of stories in traditional performances so that the results can be used to nurture and maintain the resilience of a local culture

Background: Puger fishermen are able to survive and develop (resilience) in carrying out their activities in the form of natural disturbances and various diseases, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Oral diseases are the lowest of the seven diseases recorded at the Puger Health Center. This disease can make patients exposed to COVID-19 worse, but the Puger area is included in the green zone. The Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of knowledge, behavior and health services to the social resilience ability of Puger fishermen.Method: It used a quantitative approach with the method of structural equation modelling (SEM). Confirmatory factor analysis tests and path analysis were conducted to analyze the effect among variables according to the research purpose. Questionnaires were distributed to fishermen who were sampled as respondents. Respondents amounted to 111 people. It used is simple random sampling.Result: The knowledge has a positive effect, but it is not significant to social resilience with a significance level (β= 0.001 p: 0.314>0.05), behavior has a positive effect, but it is not significant to social resiliance with a significance level (β= 0.005 p: 0.649>0.05) and Health service has a positive effect, but it is not significant to social resilience with a significance level (β= 0.003 p: 0.218>0.05).Conclusion: Puger Fishermen has social resilience ability to oral diseases underpinned by knowledge, behavior as well as health service. These variables have a positive correlation with resilience. Yet the level is not quite significant.

Abstract Often defined and examined as a human characteristic enacted under duress, resilience receives little attention as to how, why, and for whom it is valued. By exploring resilience as a colonial myth or discursive device, this article investigates how racialized ideas of the late nineteenth century informed the way colonial actors in present-day Kenya and East Africa classified and regulated communities according to who counted as “resilient.” It traces the particular myth of Nubian resilience to illustrate how the idea of Nubian soldiers’ exceptionalism among African troops informed, authorized, and at times undermined the colonial project in Kenya as well as the political realities of Nubian soldiers. Drawing on the colonial archive, oral history of the Kenyan Nubian Council of Elders, and ethnography, this article outlines how multiple and often competing versions of the myth of Nubian resilience co-existed throughout the history of Kenya, and concludes with an analysis of how the myth of Nubian resilience is remembered in postcolonial Kenya.

Oral history collections both rely on and preserve community memories, and are of importance for understanding marginalized communities, particularly when they privilege minority voices. This article draws from original, video-based oral histories conducted for the United Kingdom’s national LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and others) museum, Queer Britain, focusing on an ongoing collection of oral histories organized around experiences related to the COVID pandemic. In order to protect the health of those interviewed and the interviewers, the researchers used virtual meeting software to record video interviews and utilized qualitative software to expand and support interview analysis. Specific oral history methodologies and concepts are explored, and museum studies content is briefly discussed, specifically as it relates to museums of marginalized people. Themes explored include isolation and timelessness, the impact of the pandemic on diverse LGBTQ+ communities, and HIV/AIDS.

This research explores how Colombian refugees have manifested resilience in their resettlement and integration process in New Zealand. This study recruited 13 former Colombian refugees who were resettled in New Zealand from Ecuador, where they were recognised as refugees by the government of Ecuador and with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). One reason for conducting this investigation was the lack of academic research on Colombian refugees in New Zealand, and to explore how they manifest resilience after their resettlement in New Zealand. But also, to contribute to the development of research on Colombian refugees in New Zealand and to contribute to all New Zealand refugee organisations with their resettlement and integration programmes in the country. Oral history and ethnography are the methodologies used in this study. 12 semi-structured oral history interviews were conducted with the participants. One focus group was also conducted, and four participants presented their written diaries. The findings of this research showed that the resilience demonstrated by Colombian refugees in New Zealand has been the key to overcoming the challenges of integration in the country, mainly the lack of English, mental health problems, discrimination, and unemployment.

This study investigates how Colombian refugees have exhibited resilience during their resettlement and adaptation process in New Zealand. The research involved 13 former Colombian refugees who were relocated to New Zealand from Ecuador, where they were acknowledged as refugees by the Ecuadorian government with the assistance of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). One of the motivations for undertaking this research was the scarcity of academic studies on Colombian refugees in New Zealand, as well as to examine how resilience is displayed by them following their relocation. Additionally, the aim was to contribute to the advancement of research on Colombian refugees in New Zealand and provide insights to all refugee organisations in the country regarding their resettlement and integration efforts. Oral history and ethnography served as the research methodologies in this study. Twelve semi-structured oral history interviews were carried out with the participants. Moreover, one focus group was conducted, and four participants shared their personal diaries. The outcomes of this research revealed that the resilience shown by Colombian refugees in New Zealand has been crucial in overcoming the obstacles of integration, particularly the challenges of limited English proficiency, mental health issues, discrimination, and unemployment.

Abstract Objective We measured the extent to which sub-domains of executive functioning (EF) associate with resilience and well-being in older adults ranging from minimal to severe in depression symptom severity. We hypothesized that measures of set-shifting ability, problem solving skills, and cognitive flexibility would positively predict resilience and wellness, spanning affective, judgmental and cognitive components. Methods 56 older adults (27 female, mean age = 67.6, mean education = 16.52) with degrees of depression ranging from minimal to severe completed a behavioral battery. EF measures included the Trail Making Test (TMT) [B score], Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Sorting Task [correct sorts], Controlled Oral Word Association Test (COWA) [total score], and Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) [Perseverative responses]. Outcome measures included the Ego Resiliency Scale (ERS), the Life Orientation Test – Revised (LOT-R), the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), and a cumulative well-being scale. Finally, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) was used to evaluate depression symptom presence and severity. Results A series of multiple regression models were performed with age, sex and education in the first step, depression symptom severity in the second, and executive functioning measure in the third. Final models for the above four outcomes yielded the following R squares: 0.34 (p = 0.08), 0.38 (p = 0.06), 0.35 (p = 0.07), and 0.44 (p = 0.01). Conclusions Depression (shown to correlate with our outcomes) accounted for, well-being and resilience were consistently predicted with behavioral measures of executive function. Older adults may want to look toward cognitive resilience and other EF targets to exploit the relationship this has with wellness downstream.

The human body hosts a diverse microbial community, with Gram-negative bacteria playing a key role in oral health due to their virulence factors that contribute to tissue destruction and inflammation. The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) emphasizes the importance of understanding the oral microbiota to improve health outcomes, the oral cavity is particularly vulnerable to imbalances caused by these bacteria, leading to periodontal diseases and other oral infections. Among them, Porphyromonas gingivalis is the most harmful, producing gingipains that degrade host tissues and evade immune responses, promoting chronic inflammation. As a keystone pathogen, it drives periodontitis, causes systemic inflammation, and has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Its resilience in anaerobic conditions and ability to form biofilms make it difficult to treat, further complicating oral health management. Understanding the role of Gram-negative bacteria, particularly P. gingivalis, is essential for advancing prevention and treatment strategies in oral health.

Igbo oral funeral songs are dynamic and resilient oral forms. Applying the tenets of an infracultural model of ethnopoetics to study Igbo oral funeral songs collected during fieldwork, in this article, I examine the emerging trend in most Igbo communities of the co-existence, modification, and adaptation of Christian/western ideals into the mainstream repertoire of Igbo oral funeral songs. I therefore examine a situation where Igbo oral performers are drawing inspiration from western religious, linguistic, and cultural philosophies and applying them to the trajectory of Igbo oral funeral poetry. Observing that the reason for this is to accord the deceased a befitting funeral rite, I underscore the resilience of Igbo oral funeral poetry which acculturates western cultural elements into its oral funeral performances which are deployed to help reduce the pain of bereavement and assist the dead to successfully find their way as they journey to join their ancestors.

The majority of trauma and resilience research in Cambodia has focussed on survivors of the Khmer Rouge. This qualitative study set out to discover what protective factors promote resilience in young trauma survivors who are at least one generation removed. A Grounded Theory approach offered a guiding resilience framework that shaped 40 interviews: 26 participants comprised of Cambodian young people (ages 18-30) who had experienced significant early childhood trauma and 14 key informants from the Cambodian Child Protection non-governmental organization sector. Data from the young people was collected through the use of three instruments: semi-structured interviews, a narrative timeline of events and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. These instruments were used to explore factors relating to recovery, resilience and wellbeing among the Cambodian young people. Key informant interviews were conducted to help understand how the Child Protection sector assists recovery from trauma in Cambodia. Analysis of the participants’ oral narratives sought to uncover, understand and explain the phenomena of resilience and factors contributing to their recovery, in a post-Khmer Rouge contemporary Cambodian context. According to the young people, key factors contributing to their recovery included emotional regulation, faith and spirituality, opportunities for education and employment, social connectedness and meaning making.

Abstract The new framework of resilient aging has gained its importance in recent years. This symposium provides new findings on resilience and health among the Chinese population. Using data collected among 430 Chinese older adults in Honolulu, the first presentation examines resilience as an explanatory mechanism linking neighborhood social environment and well-being. Results showed that neighborhood cohesion was positively related to psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Resilience contributed to a substantial portion of the associations. Using the same data, the second presentation examines the association between immigrant status and oral health related quality of life (OHQoL) and the moderating role of resilience. Findings showed that U.S.-born Chinese immigrant older adults had better OHQoL than their foreign-born Chinese American counterparts. Resilience was positively associated with OHQoL for the former but not for the latter. The third paper presents findings from the same dataset along with a survey of 800 older adults in Wuhan, China. The positive relationship between attitudes towards aging and self-rated health (SRH) was found to be moderated by resilience such that higher levels of resilience weakened this association substantially. Both the positive focal relationship and the moderating effect appeared to be stronger among participants in Honolulu. Using both datasets, the fourth paper investigates patterns of intergenerational transfer and their relationships with SRH as well as the meditating effect of resilience. Findings highlighted the beneficial health effects of receiving emotional support from adult children as well as the mediating role of resilience for older females in both study sites.

The efficacy of retainers is a pivotal concern in orthodontic care. This study examined the biomechanical behaviour of retainers, particularly the influence of retainer stiffness and tooth resilience on force transmission and stress distribution. To do this, a finite element model was created of the lower jaw from the left to the right canine with a retainer attached on the oral side. Three levels of tooth resilience and variable retainer bending stiffness (influenced by retainer type, retainer diameter, and retainer material) were simulated. Applying axial or oblique (45° tilt) loads on a central incisor, the force transmission increased from 2% to 65% with increasing tooth resilience and retainer stiffness. Additionally, a smaller retainer diameter reduced the uniformity of the stress distribution in the bonding interfaces, causing concentrated stress peaks within a small field of the bonding area. An increase in retainer stiffness and in tooth resilience as well as a more oblique load direction all lead to higher overall stress in the adhesive bonding area associated with a higher risk of retainer bonding failure. Therefore, it might be recommended to avoid the use of retainers that are excessively stiff, especially in cases with high tooth resilience.

Students paired with isolated older adults were tasked with building supportive relationships, assuring that basic needs were being met and that all available community resources were in place, and then documenting their mentor’s life stories with an emphasis on the resilience, strength and wisdom of their older adult mentors (to focus and build on their strengths, the older adults we engage with are referred to as our “mentors”). Oral histories and supporting artifacts are archived in the university’s library permanent repository. The oral histories portray unique perspectives into life, strength, and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine. The older adult mentors participating in the Generation to Generation project reported feeling strengthened and connected through their participation in the Generation to Generation project. To determine if social Isolation and loneliness can be ameliorated through participation in the Generation to Generation oral history project, researchers utilized the UCLA Loneliness Scale in pre- and post- participation interviews; findings will be shared.

Resumen

When implants are required in prosthodontics treatment, one of the most important decisions is the choice of the final crown and the type of connection to the implant through the abutment. Hybrid abutments are becoming a primary choice. They are projected and produced with materials whose properties guarantee the required mechanical features (including resistance) and take advantage of the hybrid abutment crown retention between screw and cement. However, a review of the mechanical resistance of the different abutment types and associated materials is still lacking. This review aimed to study the in vitro mechanical efficiency of the hybrid abutments used in oral rehabilitation. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, B-on, and Google Scholar databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: 75 articles were identified from all databases, and 33 were selected after abstract screening. Thus, 21 studies were included in the review after full-text reading. Among the materials used for crowns, lithium disilicate was, aesthetically, the primary choice for its aesthetic and moderate strength. On the other hand, zirconia showed the best fracture resistance. Regarding the different kinds of abutments, there is still some lack of knowledge about the best design. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this systematic review, we can conclude that hybrid pillars are an excellent choice for oral rehabilitation through implants, showing improved resistance when including materials such as zirconia and lithium disilicate.

Resumen

The present study aims to test whether probiotics protect against experimental gingivitis incited by 14 days of oral hygiene neglect and/or subsequently support the restoration of oral homeostasis. Eighty systemically and orally healthy participants refrained from oral hygiene procedures for 14 days, followed by 14 days with regular oral hygiene procedures. Additionally, participants consumed either probiotics (n = 40) or placebo (n = 40) throughout the trial. At baseline, day 14, and day 28, supragingival plaque score and bleeding-on-probing percentage (BOP %) were registered, and supragingival plaque and saliva samples were collected. The supragingival microbiota was characterized using 16S sequencing, and saliva samples were analyzed for levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and proteases. At day 28, the relative abundance of Lautropia (p = 0.014), Prevotella (p = 0.046), Fusobacterium (p = 0.033), and Selenomonas (p = 0.0078) genera were significantly higher in the placebo group compared to the probiotics group, while the relative abundance of Rothia (p = 0.047) species was associated with the probiotics group. Streptococcus sanguinis was associated with the probiotics group, while Campylobacter gracilis was associated with the placebo group. No difference was observed in salivary cytokines, albumin, or any enzyme activity. The present study suggests that probiotics support the resilience of the oral microbiota in the resolution period after gingivitis.

Resumen

Cherokee people understand climate change. In their traditional homelands, located in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Cherokees have accumulated vast repositories of knowledge � known as traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) � about changes in geology, fluctuations in local ecosystems and the importance of biodiversity. This knowledge, collected and stored in oral traditions, sacred beliefs, and daily life, ensures the resilience of Cherokee communities. Water stories are key to this resilience. As this article reveals, water stories are sacred stories, part of a living body of knowledge that connects the Cherokees to the landscapes and waterscapes of southern Appalachia. Water stories flow through Cherokee scientific and spiritual knowledge. They are stories thousands of years in the making and provide vital insights that can inform the co-governance of rivers and clarify strategies for living in balance and harmony with local ecosystems. In the old stories of the Cherokee people are fresh insights that can guide climate resilience into the future.
