Resumen
We propose a novel real-time joint-Transform correlation (JTC) technique for optical pattern recognition. To replace the film recording aspect of performing optical correlation, conventional real-time joint-Transform correlation (JTC) optical systems make use of a spatial light modulator (SLM) located in the Fourier plane to record the interference intensity to achieve real-time processing. However, the use of a SLM in the Fourier plane, is a major drawback in these systems since SLMs are limited in resolution, phase uniformity and contrast ratio. Thus, they are not desirable for robust applications. In this thesis, we developed a hybrid (optical/electronic) processing technique to achieve real-time joint-Transform correlation (JTC). The technique employs acousto-optic heterodyning scanning. The proposed real-time JTC system does not require a SLM in the Fourier plane as in conventional real-time JTC systems. This departure from the conventional scheme is extremely important, as the proposed approach does not depend on SLM issues. We have developed the theory of the technique and substantiated it with optical experimental as well as computer simulation results.

Resumen
Optical matched filters have been used for the recognition of patterns in a noisy background. Different types of matched filters have been proposed since the introduction of the VanderLugt matched spatial filter. A novel filter, the hybrid phase-only matched filter, is proposed which shows promise for better signal to noise ratio, correlation peak intensity and light efficiency compared to the recently proposed optimal phase-only filter. A neural technique for the design of space-domain binary filter for pattern recognition applications is developed. The method takes advantage of the similarity in the structure of the minimum squared error criterion for the construction of linear discriminant functions and the Lyapunov function of the Hopfield Neural Model.

Reed, Stuart. "Cascaded linear shift invariant processing in pattern recognition". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2000. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7481.

Texto completo
Resumen
Image recognition is the process of classifying a pattern in an image into one of a number of stored classes. It is used in such diverse applications as medical screening, quality control in manufacture and military target recognition. An image recognition system is called shift invariant if a shift of the pattern in the input image produces a proportional shift in the output, meaning that both the class and location of the object in the image are identified. The work presented in this thesis considers a cascade of linear shift invariant optical processors, or correlators, separated by fields of point non-lineari ties, called the cascaded correlator. This is introduced as a method of providing parallel, shiftinvariant, non-linear pattern recognition in a system that can learn in the manner of neural networks. It is shown that if a neural network is constrained to give overall shift invariance, the resulting structure is a cascade of correlators, meaning that the cascaded correlator is the only architecture which will provide fully shift invariant pattern recognition. The issues of training of such a non-linear system are discussed in neural network terms, and the non-linear decisions of the system are investigated. By considering digital simulations of a two-stage system, it is shown that the cascaded correlator is superior to linear filtering for both discrimination and tolerance to image distortion. This is shown for theoretical images and in real-world applications based on fault identification in can manufacture. The cascaded correlator has also been proven as an optical system by implementation in a joint transform correlator architecture. By comparing simulated and optical results, the resulting practical errors are analysed and compensated. It is shown that the optical implementation produces results similar to those of the simulated system, meaning that it is possible to provide a highly non-linear decision using robust parallel optical processing techniques.

Bult, Timothy Paul. "Schema labelling applied to hand-printed Chinese character recognition". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26175.

Texto completo
Resumen
Hand-printed Chinese character recognition presents an interesting problem for Artificial Intelligence research. Input data in the form of arrays of pixel values cannot be directly mapped to unique character identifications because of the complexity of the characters. Thus, intermediate data structures are necessary, which in turn lead to a need to represent knowledge of the characters' composition. Building the intermediate constructs for these hand-printed characters necessarily involves choices among ambiguities, the set of which is so large that an efficient search algorithm becomes central to the recognition process. Schema labelling is a theory of how knowledge should be organized for recognition tasks in which composition structure is inherent in the domain, the composition entails ambiguity, and the ambiguity generates large search spaces. This thesis describes an implementation of an enhanced version of schema labelling for Chinese characters. The specific problems addressed by the enhancements, with some success, are (i) the segmentation of real images into objects usable by the schema system, (ii) the definition of schemas which adequately describe the generic composition of hand-printed Chinese characters, as well as common variations or vagaries, and (iii) the inclusion of sufficient "control knowledge" to prevent combinatorial explosion of the backtracking recognition process. Test characters for recognition systems can be classified along several dimensions. On the spectrum from type-set, through hand-printed, to hand-written forms, our system was tested on restricted hand-print, at a level somewhat more difficult than is normally attempted. On the spectrum of input types, from grey-scale pixel input through on-line stroke representations, our system was fully tested only at the high end, with complete synthetic strokes. We obtained a success rate of 57%, 12 out of the 21 characters tested. The principal success of the work is that characters of the complexity tested could be recognized at all, and in the impact schema labelling techniques had on that recognition.

A long standing debate in computer vision community concerns the link between segmentation and recognition. The question I am trying to answer here is, Does image segmentation as a preprocessing step help image recognition? In spite of a plethora of the literature to the contrary, some authors have suggested that recognition driven by high quality segmentation is the most promising approach in image recognition because the recognition system will see only the relevant features on the object and not see redundant features outside the object (Malisiewicz and Efros 2007; Rabinovich, Vedaldi, and Belongie 2007). This thesis explores the following question: If segmentation precedes recognition, and segments are directly fed to the recognition engine, will it help the recognition machinery? Another question I am trying to address in this thesis is of scalability of recognition systems. Any computer vision system, concept or an algorithm, without exception, if it is to stand the test of time, will have to address the issue of scalability.

Resumen
Pattern recognition is a rapidly expanding area of research, with applications ranging from character recognition and component inspection to robotic guidance and military reconnaissance. The basic principle of image recognition is that of comparing the unknown image with many known reference images or 'filters', until a match is found. By comparing the unknown image with a large data bank of filters, the diversity of the application can be extended. The work presented in this thesis details the practical development of an optical disk based memory system as applied in various optical correlators for pattern recognition purposes. The characteristics of the holographic optical disk as a storage medium are investigated in terms of information capacity and signal to noise ratio, where a fully automated opto-mechanical system has been developed for the control of the optical disk and the processing of the information recorded. A liquid crystal television has been used as a Spatial Light Modulator for inputting the image data, and as such, the device characteristics have been considered with regard to processing both amplitude and phase information. Three main configurations of optical correlator have been applied, specifically an image plane correlator, a VanderLugt correlator, and an Anamorphic correlator. Character recognition has been used to demonstrate correlator performance, where simple matched filtering has been applied, subsequent to which, an improvement in class discrimination has been demonstrated with the application of the Minimum Average Correlation Energy filter. The information processing rate obtained as a result of applying 2D parallel processing has been shown to be many orders of magnitude larger than that available with comparable serial based digital systems.
