The Bonnet Carré Spillway is a large flood control structure that diverts Mississippi River floodwaters into Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi Sound to prevent flooding in southern Louisiana and New Orleans. When operating at full capacity, the Spillway releases water at a rate of 7080 m3/s. Spillway openings regularly last a month or more. The enormous amount of freshwater that is diverted through the Spillway impacts salinity and nutrients in the Mississippi Sound. The objective of this research is to use a hydrodynamic model to simulate the impact of Bonnet Carré Spillway openings on the salinity of the Mississippi Sound over multiple years. Specifically, four hypothetical simulations of Spillway openings are compared to simulations during the same time when the Spillway is closed. The results show by how much, for how long, and where salinity is impacted in the estuarine system. The maximum difference in salinity at any given location over the mapped dates between the non-opening and hypothetical opening scenarios varies between 22 and 30 in each year. Differences in salinity between the opening and non-opening scenarios begin to decline in the study area approximately 18 days after Spillway closure. Decreases in salinity in Lake Borgne persist over a year. The Bonnet Carré Spillway affects salinity mostly in Lake Borgne and along an east/west ribbon that embraces the Mississippi coastline. Decreases in salinity caused by Spillway openings are seen up to 200 km east of the Spillway. These results are important for planning management strategies for estuarine resources during Spillway openings.

Under the influence of COVID-19, ventilation is recommended to reduce the risk of infection in the room. Window openings can increase the ventilation rate caused by indoor and outdoor temperature differences. However, there is a concern that opening the window in the air-conditioned room will increase the heating and cooling loads due to air leakage. In addition, it is difficult to maintain an adequate ventilation rate because the outdoor temperature changes from time to time. To solve this problem, we have developed an automatic opening system to control the natural ventilation rate. This system can control the adequate ventilation rate for the room by adjusting the opening area of the window automatically. In this study, the control equations for the system for sliding windows were derived, and actual measurements were taken with the system. Additionally, the flow coefficients of the casement windows were numerically analyzed. Then, the control equation for the system for casement windows was derived from the relationship between the opening angle and the flow coefficient. As a result, the ventilation rate could be controlled using an automatic opening system for the sliding windows. Also, the flow coefficient of the casement window could be approximated by a sinusoidal function of the opening angle.

As a lateral load-bearing system, the steel plate shear wall (SPSW) is utilized in different structural systems that are susceptible to seismic risk and because of functional reasons SPSWs may need openings. In this research, the effects of rectangular openings on the lateral load-bearing behavior of the steel shear walls by the finite element method (FEM) is investigated. The results of the FEM are used for the prediction of SPSW behavior using the artificial neural network (ANN). The radial basis function (RBF) network is used to model the effects of the rectangular opening in the SPSW with different plate thicknesses. The results showed that the opening leads to reduced load-bearing capacity, stiffness and absorbed energy, which can be precisely predicted by employing RBF network model. Besides, the suitable relative area of the opening is determined.

The research method is quantitative research which the variable is observed from outdoor and indoor wind speed data. Research developed by the experimental research method with CFD simulation to meet the need for air changes.From previous research, case studies obtained ellipse formed by the building mass is the most ideal form to obtain optimum conditions of wind movement.From the result of analysis in this study, requires openings of 0,29 to 1.08 m2 with different opening types, to meet the needs of 0.5 ACH under different wind speed. Opening schedule and Hybrid Ventilation system were developed to gain the ideal indoor air condition.

The density, height and diameter of trembling aspen sucker regeneration was assessed over a 10-year period in openings created by harvesting in a 40-year-old, 19-m-tall aspen stand in northeastern Ontario. The 5 types of opening comprised: circular openings of 9-m- and 18-m-diameter, 150-m-long east–west strips of 9-m and 18-m width, and a 1.5 ha (100 m × 150 m) clearcut. Density of aspen regeneration was significantly affected by opening type, location relative to the opening, time since harvest, and by all interactions of these factors. Aspen densities within the circular openings declined to low levels by year 10, despite considerable initial recruitment. Trembling aspen height and diameter were significantly influenced by opening type, location relative to the opening, time since harvest, and by opening × time and location × time interactions. Trembling aspen heights in the circular openings were substantially less than in the clearcut and strip openings by year 10. The results support the traditional view that aspen is best managed under the clearcut silvicultural system, and that trembling aspen regeneration following forest harvesting can be reduced by controlling the extent or intensity of overstory removal. Finally, the results suggest that disturbances that create gaps greater than 1 tree height in width in aspen or mixedwood forests may allow gap dynamics to function. The aging process is associated with significant alterations in mitochondrial function. These changes in mitochondrial function are thought to involve increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which over time contribute to cell death, senescence, tissue degeneration, and impaired tissue repair. The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) is likely to play a critical role in these processes, as increased ROS activates mPTP opening, which further increases ROS production. Injury and inflammation are also thought to increase mPTP opening, and chronic, low-grade inflammation is a hallmark of aging. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) can suppress the frequency and duration of mPTP opening; however, NAD+ levels are known to decline with age, further stimulating mPTP opening and increasing ROS release. Research on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly on Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), has uncovered significant findings regarding mPTP openings and aging. Parkinson’s disease is associated with a reduction in mitochondrial complex I activity and increased oxidative damage of DNA, both of which are linked to mPTP opening and subsequent ROS release. Similarly, AD is associated with increased mPTP openings, as evidenced by amyloid-beta (Aβ) interaction with the pore regulator cyclophilin D (CypD). Targeted therapies that can reduce the frequency and duration of mPTP opening may therefore have the potential to prevent age-related declines in cell and tissue function in various systems including the central nervous system.

Electronic refers to components research, setup and displacement on the dishwasher. Software regards Arduino Mega (the used MCU) state programming. This thesis contains also intermediate trials with encoutered troubles and show how they've been solved. Many future implementations are finally presented.

1 INTRODUCTION With the increasing capabilities of today’s smart phones, the demand of consumers for new applications has risen dramatically. By opening up these smart phones and providing third parties the opportunity to develop “apps” for their systems, producers like Apple and platform owners like Google can offer much more value to their customers. As smart phones are one kind of embedded systems (ES), the question arises if similar development can also take place in other kinds of embedded systems. ES, consisting of hardware and software, are embedded in a device to realize a specific function, in contrast to personal computers, which serve multiple purposes [4,30]. The notion of incorporating external actors in the innovation process has been coined open innovation which has become increasingly popular in research and practice since Chesbrough introduced the term in 2003 [12]. By opening up their innovation processes for external actors, firms could benefit from internal as well as from external ideas. In this paper, the notion of open innovation will be explored in the context of ES. The case of ES is particularly interesting, as it requires not only the opening of innovation processes, but also the opening of the embedded system itself. Some of these platforms are opened only to a small degree like Apple’s iPhone, in order to enable others to create new applications for it. Similar developments also take place for example in the automotive software domain, especially concerning infotainment systems. However, most kinds of ES have been spared out by this development until now. As more than 98% of all chips manufactured are used for ES [10] and high-performing computer chips are getting cheaper [38], opening considerations could also prove valuable for a large number of other application domains. However, opening up innovation processes in the context of ES is challenging from both an organizational and technical perspective. First of all, embedded systems are subject to a variety of constraints in contrast to multi-purpose computing devices, like realtime and security constraints or costs and resource constraints. Second, ES are quite diverse both in their composition and in terms on their requirements. In this paper, we want to explore, how the different properties of embedded systems influence possible open innovation processes. This will be done by drawing on to the characteristics of firms implementing the three core open innovation processes suggested by Gassmann and Enkel (2004) [15] and conceptually explaining how the characteristics of ES enable or hinder open innovation processes. As a result, a classification of the OI processes in terms of ES characteristics is provided.

It also discusses the important energy storage and compression techniques that are used in the generation of high-energy pulsed power. Various different types of switches are involved in these applications, and particular consideration is paid to the performance of the MESS (Magnetic Energy Switching System) switch, used both in isolation and as part of a pulse-forming network. Exploding wires and foils are also investigated in some detail, since important features from the action of these are present in most opening switches.

The UAE Pavilion will be a major attraction at Expo 2020 in Dubai. The roof of the building consists of 28 operable wings made of carbon and glass fiber, having masses ranging from 5 to 18 tons and total lengths in the range of 30 to 65 m that have to be actuated by a dedicated mechanism. In this paper we present the turn-key project for the design, manufacturing, installation, test and commissioning of the Roof Wing Opening System, which represents a unique system world-wide for operating the wings. It consists of one Hydraulic Power Unit with approximately 1 MW of installed power, 2 km of piping working at the nominal pressure of 210 bar, 46 hydraulic cylinders with 1.5 tons of mass each and the complete automation and control subsystem that includes 9 separate PLCs, dedicated software, 2.000 sensors and control points, and over 20 km of harness. One major challenge is the control of the wings. Part of them, due to their huge dimensions and masses, are actuated using two or three hydraulic cylinders that have to be properly synchronized during the movement, preventing unwanted displacements in order to avoid stresses on the wing mechanical structure and ultimately permanent damages. Due to the nature of the project, a final validation of the control algorithms can be done only at system level during the commissioning phase. Therefore, particular care has to be devoted to the verification strategy, anticipating the behavior of the system in the early validation stages and following a V-model approach, in order to identify critical situations and reduce the overall risk. After a brief system description, we will explain how the verification has been approached by using system level simulations and dedicated testing activities on specific subsystems. In particular, we will detail the verification of the control algorithms that has been performed on a dedicated Hardware-Inthe- Loop system first, followed then by dedicated tests on a reduced wing mock-up, allowing the study of the system behavior under the most critical conditions. These include the application of external forces with specified profiles. Finally, we will provide the actual status of the system installation, testing and commissioning activities that have been running in Dubai since January 2019.

Since 1957 European Schools have provided primary and secondary education to the children of civil servants working for the European Communities. Under an intergovernmental umbrella, these schools have implemented a specific educational framework with a highly supranational vocation. For the first time in 2009 the system adopted a reform to open up this type of schooling and the European Baccalaureate to other pupils across Europe. The process involved different institutional actors with separate motivations. This thesis is a policy analysis of the consequent opening up of the system, presented primarily as a documentbased study. It builds on previous academic research about the evolution and European essence of the system. The thesis shows that the breadth of the opening up is determined by the structure of the system, the decision-making power held by each stakeholder, the ideological vision of the member states and the European institutions, and the economic costs. The 2009 reform provides the legal opportunity to spread, expand and popularize European schooling, but the system is already facing new challenges that could jeopardize this opportunity. The system is at a crossroads. Only a much more committed attitude from the stakeholders can deliver the desired results. The originality of this study lies in providing a coherent and concise assessment of the process, the outcome and the implications of the opening up of European Schools. The principal contribution is to explain why the reform happened. The evolution of European Schools is an example of the increasing global debate on legitimizing European politics. The thesis also reflects on the relation between education and social attitudes towards the European integration project.

Effective use of the World Wide Web grants users increased power over people, time and space. However, its growing ubiquity also means these powers tend to become eroded in non-users. Growth of the Web as a marketplace and as a channel to deliver e-services, results in an ever increasing volume of sensitive information being transacted and stored online. As a result, authentication systems are now being used extensively on the Web. Unfortunately the profusion of Web sites and the large numbers of associated passwords reduces their efficacy and puts severe strain on users’ limited cognitive resources. Authentication systems themselves therefore can act as an additional source of exclusion. However, this step of authentication has up until now, been largely overlooked when considering inclusive design. People may experience a variety of barriers to Internet access: Psychological, Material, Skills and Usage. Existing models of these barriers within the literature are discussed, and a unified model of exclusion is developed and used to identify a series of potential solutions to the various aspects of each barrier. These solutions are classified into 4 separate design goals: Enhanced Usability, Enhanced Accessibility, Reduced End-user Cost and Robust Security. A number of groups who are especially at risk of Web exclusion are also identified. The design goals are used to evaluate existing traditional and image-based passwords. The accessibility component is assessed in terms of twenty-two use scenarios, consisting of a particular user group’s limiting characteristic and strategies the groups are known to use when accessing the Web. The accessibility analysis shows traditional passwords to be less accessible for several groups: • Novice users who experience reduced comparative learnability, efficiency and increased errors. • Mobile phone users, head wand users, eye gaze tracker users, those with reduced manual dexterity/and or tremors accessing principally via a mouse or keyboard, those with impaired ability to select and filter relevant sensory information and low-literacy users accessing via a normal or text to speech browsers. These groups experience reduced comparative efficiency and increased errors. • Users with impaired ability to remember information or sequences and illiterate users accessing via a text-to-speech browser or normal browser. These groups have the most significant issues with passwords, experiencing reduced comparative learnability, memorability, efficiency and increased errors. Image based passwords are found to be more accessible for some of these groups, but are unusable by blind users and less usable by those with visual impairments. Just as Web users are not a uniform, homogenous group, so too is there no homogenous solution to creating usable security. Even so, there may be solutions that are usable and secure given the particular scenario within which they will be used. For this reason, it is important to supply a number of alternatives because as one modality or model of interaction is locked out, another group becomes excluded. One such alternative, a novel scheme called “Musipass”, is trialled in lab-based and large-scale online user participation experiments. Musipass is found to offer superior long-term memorability to a traditional password and users report enjoying the experience of authenticating with music. A security analysis is conducted which shows Musipass to offer comparative or enhanced security compared to a traditional password against a number of well-known attacks.

Homogeneous catalysts are advantageous in selective catalysis due to the well-defined active site at the molecular level. The poor recyclability, bimolecular aggregation, and undesired poison resistance of homogeneous catalysts hinder further industrial application despite the controlled reaction pathway due to the homogeneous environment. On the other hand, heterogeneous catalysts are preferred in industry due to their high recyclability and high activity. Yet, poor selectivity due to undefined active sites is a drawback. The construction of a host-guest system where a molecular level catalyst is incorporated into the Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) provides a promising solution to bridge those two fields. This composite maintains the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and overcomes the disadvantages. However, finding an incorporation method that is versatile with minimum synthetic modification of the host and guest remains one of the challenges. In the first part of this dissertation, a new concept called “aperture-opening encapsulation’’ is introduced for incorporating large and diverse guest molecules into MOFs without changing the identity of either the guest or MOF. The approach capitalizes on the existence of linker exchange reactions, which, as our kinetic studies show, proceed via competition between associative and dissociative exchange mechanisms. The second part describes how this method is applied to incorporate a molecular catalyst into the cavity of UiO-66 for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate, which is a useful application for energy related industry. The developed hybrid composite showed the ability to be recycled, showed no evidence of bimolecular catalyst decomposition, and was less prone to catalyst poisoning. These results demonstrate for the first time how the aperture-opening process resulting from linker dissociation in MOFs can be utilized as a strategy to synthesize host-guest materials useful for chemical catalysis. After the establishment of the hybrid catalyst, the last part of the dissertation describes our efforts into the investigation of mass transport in catalysis. The understanding of the interaction between the host-guest is beneficial for the development of biological analogs in the future

The blood-brain barrier BBB refers to the set of specialized endothelial cells that line the vasculature in the brain and effectively control movement of molecules into and out of the brain. While necessary for proper brain function, the BBB blocks 98% of drugs from entering the brain and is the most significant barrier to developing therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. Active transport allows some specific molecules to cross the BBB, but therapeutic development using this route has had limited success. A number of techniques have been used to bypass the BBB, but are often highly invasive and ineffective. Over the last two decades, a minimally invasive technique to transiently open the BBB has been under development that utilizes transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) in combination with intravascular microbubble contrast agents. This method is often carried out in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide and assess BBB opening and has been referred to as MRI guided FUS (MRgFUS). Because of the utility of mouse models of neurological disease and the exploratory nature of MRgFUS, systems that allow BBB opening in mice are a useful and necessary tool to develop and evaluate this method for clinical application. In this dissertation project, a custom built, cost-effective FUS system for opening the BBB in mice was developed, with the objective of using this device to deliver therapeutics to the brain. Being a custom device, it was necessary to evaluate the ultrasound output, verify in vivo safety, and anticipate the therapeutic effect. The scope of the work herein consists of the design, construction, and evaluation of system that fulfills these requirements. The final constructed system cost was an order of magnitude less than any commercially available MRgFUS system. At this low price point, the hardware could allow the implementation of the methodology in many more research areas than previously possible. Additionally, to anticipate the therapeutic effect, molecules of pharmacologically-relevant sizes were delivered to brain with a novel, multispectral approach. Results demonstrated that the device was able to safely open the BBB, and macromolecule delivery showed that both molecule size and FUS pressure both influence the amount and distribution of molecules in the brain. Using different ultrasound pressures, the threshold for BBB opening was found to be ≥ 180 kPa (0.13 MI). The threshold for damage was found to be ≥ 420 kPa (0.30 MI), and was minor at this pressure, but extensive for higher pressure (870 kPa, 0.62 MI), in which minor damage was caused by this pressure. Performing a novel implementation of a diffusion model on the fluorescence images of 500, 70, and 3 kDa dextran resulted in calculated diffusion coefficients of 0.032 ± 0.015, 12 ± 6.0, and 0.13 ± 0.094 square microns per second, respectively.

Resumen
This thesis contributes to the improvement of Double Skin facades' thermal performance in warm climates. A new design for DSF was proposed and evaluated using an experimental study on a scaled model and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. The proposed facade named IS-DSF (Interstitial slat-blind DSF) showed the capability to reduce overheating risk in the cavity due to two applied strategies: shading devices’ specific placement and wind-induced ventilation improvement. Finally, a framework was developed for the implementation of IS-DSF in warm climates applicable at the early stage of building design.

While the expectation for natural ventilation is increasing under the context of COVID-19, fresh air at residential houses in Finland is basically guaranteed by mechanical ventilation systems. It means that natural ventilation is not considered as an available potential of ventilation in Finnish building regulation. Even if the mechanical ventilation system handles the air quality, the natural ventilation by window opening is expected to be a supportive measure. However, there is not enough measured data about how much air change is fulfilled by window opening. The article describes the evaluation of fresh air accessibility by window openings at six Finnish apartments. To understand the behaviour of air change, CO2 mass balance equation model was applied. The results of summer season clarified that the actual number of air changes are 085 to 1.54 times per hour with one-side opening. The CO2 mass balance model for apartments, which is a kind of tracer gas decay method, is an effective way to estimate the actual number of air changes without preventing occupants’ daily living. Since some buildings, such as residential, school, churches, are affected by the moisture problems, the management of moisture behaviour by both natural and mechanical ventilation is essential.

Construction and concrete production are time-sensitive and fast-paced; as such, it is crucial to monitor the in-place strength development of concrete structures in real-time. Existing concrete strength testing methods, such as the traditional hydraulic compression method specified by ASTM C 39 and the maturity method specified by ASTM C 1074, are labor-intensive, time consuming, and difficult to implement in the field. INDOT’s previous research (SPR-4210) on the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique has established its feasibility for monitoring in-situ concrete strength to determine the optimal traffic opening time. However, limitations of the data acquisition and communication systems have significantly hindered the technology’s adoption for practical applications. Furthermore, the packaging of piezoelectric sensor needs to be improved to enable robust performance and better signal quality. In this project, a wireless concrete sensor with a data transmission system was developed. It was comprised of an innovated EMI sensor and miniaturized datalogger with both wireless transmission and USB module. A cloud-based platform for data storage and computation was established, which provides the real time data visualization access to general users and data access to machine learning and data mining developers. Furthermore, field implementations were performed to prove the functionality of the innovated EMI sensor and wireless sensing system for real-time and in-place concrete strength monitoring. This project will benefit the DOTs in areas like construction, operation, and maintenance scheduling and asset management by delivering applicable concrete strength monitoring solutions.

Resumen
This paper evaluates the impact of some key labor market reforms on rural-urban inequality and income distribution, using a household-disaggregated, recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of China. We also explore how these factor market reforms interact with product market reforms currently underway as part of China’s WTO accession process. The simulation results show that the reforms in rural land rental market and Hukou system, as well as increasing off-farm labor mobility would reduce the urban-rural income ratio dramatically. Furthermore, the combination of WTO accession and factor market reforms improves both efficiency and equality significantly. Resumen
Extending the previous two years of research results (Mizarch, et al, 2012, Tao, 2011, 2012), the third year’s efforts in both Maryland and Israel were directed towards the engineering of the system. The activities included the robust chick handling and its conveyor system development, optical system improvement, online dynamic motion imaging of chicks, multi-image sequence optimal feather extraction and detection, and pattern recognition. Mechanical System Engineering The third model of the mechanical chick handling system with high-speed imaging system was built as shown in Fig. 1. This system has the improved chick holding cups and motion mechanisms that enable chicks to open wings through the view section. The mechanical system has achieved the speed of 4 chicks per second which exceeds the design specs of 3 chicks per second. In the center of the conveyor, a high-speed camera with UV sensitive optical system, shown in Fig.2, was installed that captures chick images at multiple frames (45 images and system selectable) when the chick passing through the view area. Through intensive discussions and efforts, the PIs of Maryland and ARO have created the protocol of joint hardware and software that uses sequential images of chick in its fall motion to capture opening wings and extract the optimal opening positions. This approached enables the reliable feather feature extraction in dynamic motion and pattern recognition. Improving of Chick Wing Deployment The mechanical system for chick conveying and especially the section that cause chicks to deploy their wings wide open under the fast video camera and the UV light was investigated along the third study year. As a natural behavior, chicks tend to deploy their wings as a mean of balancing their body when a sudden change in the vertical movement was applied. In the latest two years, this was achieved by causing the chicks to move in a free fall, in the earth gravity (g) along short vertical distance. The chicks have always tended to deploy their wing but not always in wide horizontal open situation. Such position is requested in order to get successful image under the video camera. Besides, the cells with checks bumped suddenly at the end of the free falling path. That caused the chicks legs to collapse inside the cells and the image of wing become bluer. For improving the movement and preventing the chick legs from collapsing, a slowing down mechanism was design and tested. This was done by installing of plastic block, that was printed in a predesign variable slope (Fig. 3) at the end of the path of falling cells (Fig.4). The cells are moving down in variable velocity according the block slope and achieve zero velocity at the end of the path. The slop was design in a way that the deacceleration become 0.8g instead the free fall gravity (g) without presence of the block. The tests showed better deployment and wider chick's wing opening as well as better balance along the movement. Design of additional sizes of block slops is under investigation. Slops that create accelerations of 0.7g, 0.9g, and variable accelerations are designed for improving movement path and images.

Complex systems modelling is already implemented in critical policy areas such as climate change and health. It could also play an important role in the nuclear weapons sphere – by opening alternative pathways that may help mitigate risks of confrontation and escalation – but such modelling has yet to be fully embraced by policymakers in this community. By applying a complexity lens, policy- and decision-makers at all stages along the nuclear chain of command might better understand how their actions could have significant consequences for international security and peace. Nuclear decision-making is shaped by, and interacts with, the ever-changing international security environment and nuclear weapons policy. Tackling problems in the nuclear weapons policy field requires the implementation of ‘system of systems’ design principles, mathematical modelling approaches and multidisciplinary analysis. This research paper presents nuclear weapons decision-making as a complex endeavour, with individual decisions being influenced by multiple factors such as reasoning, intuition (gut feeling), biases and system-level noise. At a time of crisis, these factors may combine to cause risks of escalation. The authors draw on past examples of near nuclear use to examine decision-making in the nuclear context as a ‘wicked problem’, with multi-layered, interacting and constantly fluctuating elements.
