A distributed architecture framework has been developed for NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) as the basis for developing an extended series of space mission support data systems. The architecture is designed to include both mission development and operations. It specifically addresses the problems of standardizing a framework for which commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) applications and infrastructure are expected to provide most of the components of the systems. The resulting distributed architecture is developed based on a combination of a layered architecture, and carefully selected open standards. The layering provides the needed flexibility in mission design to support the wide variability of mission requirements. The standards are selected to address the most important interfaces, while not over constraining the implementation options.

Industry platforms in the software sector are increasingly being developed in open source. Firms seeking to position themselves as platform leaders with such technologies must find ways of operating within the unique constraints of open source development. This thesis aims to understand those challenges by analyzing the Android and Hadoop ecosystems through an augmented version of Porter's Five Forces framework proposed by Intel's Andrew Grove. The analysis finds that platform contenders in open source behave differently depending on whether they focus on competing against alternative platforms or alternative providers of the same platform as rivals. This focus informs key decisions that the firm takes, including how it interacts with complementors and its approach to innovation. Due to the fact that open source vendors tend to lack unilateral authority over technology decisions, they can only seek to influence the behavior of the ecosystem by securing key relationships in the value network. In particular, they must secure the right engineering talent, access to key complements and superior paths to the customer. The research highlights some of the factors and tactics platform contenders in Hadoop and Android considered in acquiring these relationships. The open nature of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) also allow new technologies to emerge and change the definition of the platform's boundaries. This creates a further strategic challenge for open source platform contenders. Keywords: platform strategy, platform leadership, open source software, Hadoop, Android.

"Systems" goods-such as computers, telecom networks, and automobiles-are made up of multiple components. This dissertation comprises three essays that study the decisions of system innovators in mobile computing to "open" development of their systems to outside suppliers and the implications of doing so. The first essay considers this issue from the perspective of which components are retained under the control of the original innovator to act as a "platform" in the system. Based on detailed review of leading systems in this industry in data spanning 1984-2004, I find that platform boundaries expand and contract over time as a means for platform suppliers to promote the adoption of the platform (by end-customers, downstream manufacturers, and suppliers of complements) and simultaneously to ensure the continuing innovation of the system. The second essay provides a systematic empirical investigation of how the extent of openness chosen by the platform supplier affected the rate of innovation of mobile computing devices. I measure openness in relation to both the boundaries of the platform and the extent to which actions were taken by platform suppliers to promote entry by hardware device manufacturers.
(cont.) I find regular relationships across multiple measures of innovation that suggest that the whether openness increases or decreases innovation depends on the nature of innovation and the intensity of competition between device makers. The third essay moves from device hardware to the applications software developer networks that form around opened platforms. I investigate the effect of platform suppliers' aggressive promotion of entry of software developers around their platforms. I find that while large developer networks are associated with a wide selection of software titles, that very large developer networks in fact lead to less software output. I interpret this result as revealing the importance of maintaining investment incentives-even in a context with network effects.

Resumen
The hypertext paradigm offers a powerful way of modelling complex knowledge structures. Information can be arranged into networks, and connected using hypertext links. This has led to the development of more open hypertext design, which allow hypertext services to be integrated seamlessly into the user's environment. Recent research has also seen the emergence of adaptive hypertext, which uses feedback from the user to modify objects in the hypertext. The research presented in this thesis describes the HIPPO hypertext model which combines many of the ideas in open hypertext research, with existing work on adaptive hypertext systems. The idea of fuzzy anchors are introduced which allow authors to express the uncertainty and vagueness which is inherent in a hypertext anchor. Fuzzy anchors use partial truth values which allow authors to define a "degree of membership" for anchors. Anchors no longer have fixed, discrete boundaries, but have more in common with contour lines used in map design. These fuzzy anchors are used as the basis for an adaptive model, so that anchors can be modified in response to user actions. The HIPPO linking model introduces linkbase trees which combine link collections into inheritance hierarchies. These are used to construct reusable inheritance trees, which allow authors to reuse and build on existing link collections. An adaptive model is also presented to modify these linkbase hierarchies. Finally, the HIPPO system is re-implemented using a widely distributed architecture. This distributed model implements a hypertext system as a collection of lightweight, distributed services. The benefits of this distributed hypertext model are discussed, and an adaptive model is then suggested.

concept and its application in various parts of the world; and (ii) investigate the problems and prospects for an open university in Nigeria. The term "open university" is defined as distance teaching university systems created to offer programmes of study exclusively to external students. The concepts of "distance education" and "open learning" are examined and their precise usage in this thesis clarified. A distinction is also drawn between Western, indigenous and Koranic education. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part (Chapters 1 - 3), examines the concepts and the methodologies chosen for the study and provides a political, economic and educational background to Nigeria, with emphasis on the problems of higher education. Part two (Chapters 4, 5 and 6), provides a general illumination to the particular problems of the open university system and current trends in established open university institutions. In Chapter 4, a review is made of the distance education provision in Nigeria while Chapter 5 is devoted to a review of the literature. Chapter 6 is concerned with the Open University of the United Kingdom (aU-UK), especially its original concept, practices in the institution and the implications of applying the British experience elsewhere. (xi) The third part of the thesis (Chapters 7 and 8), investigates the particular problems and prospects for an open university system in Nigeria, through a study of the perceptions of a cross-section of the country's policy-makers and potential open university candidates. Chapter 7 focuses principally on the analysis of the collected empirical data on policy-makers while Chapter 8 is concerned with the personal characteristics of potential open university candidates, interpretations of their personal circumstances, their perceptions and the implications for university level home-study. The last Chapter (9) is concerned with conclusions on the findings of the thesis, their policy implications, suggested open university models for Nigeria and fruitful areas for further research.

Innovations largely contribute to a technology company's continuous survival and its competitiveness in the market place. Traditionally most companies employed closed innovation model. They kept their discoveries or inventions highly secret and made no attempt to assimilate information from outside. This model worked well until 1990s when advances in technology and society had facilitated information diffusion dramatically. Mobile industry, as one of the most rapidly changing industries, is also forced to adopt the open innovation model in various forms. Recently announced Android platform caused a big stir in the industry. The gradual shift from closeness to openness is inevitable in this industry. A good example of Open Innovation is the open source software development that has been studied extensively. This study further examines the open innovation model beyond software development, i.e. open innovation in hardware and embedded system development. Lessons are learned through case studies of software, hardware and embedded system related business practice. Recommendations are given to Mobile industry, specifically the cell phone handset industry accordingly. This study will not focus on a specific platform or the user side.

Software can either be developed in a way such that the source code is available to others, open source, or such that it is not, closed source. Open source software has a number of architectural advantages over traditionally developed closed-source software including modularity, a frequent release pattern and a strong culture of reuse. As there has been a shift away from developing software that runs locally to a model where service based computing and web services are some of the most important software used on a daily basis by people, there has been a shift away from developing such software as open source. This thesis looks at a comparison between open source and web services and shows how they compare on some of the aspects which are the most important architectural advantages of open source. This examination is based on a look at literature and specific web services. Through this examination, it shows that many of the benefits of open source can be found as a result of other architectural characteristics of web services.

Resumen
Digital Libraries (DLs) are software systems specifically designed to assist users in information seeking activities. Stemming from the intersection of library sciences and computer networking, traditional DL systems impose library philosophies of structure and management on the sprawling collections of data that are made possible through the Internet. DLs evolve to keep pace with innovation on the Internet so there is little standardization in the architecture of such systems. However, in attempting to provide users with the highest possible levels of service with the minimum possible effort, many systems work collaboratively with others, e.g., meta-search engines. This type of system interoperability is encouraged by the emergence of simple data transfer protocols such as the Open Archives Initiative?s Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). Open Digital Libraries are an extension of the work of the OAI. It is proposed in this dissertation that the philosophy and approach adopted by the OAI can easily be extended to support inter-component interaction within a componentized DL. In particular, DLs can be built by connecting small components that communicate through a family of lightweight protocols, using XML as the data interchange mechanism. In order to test the feasibility of this, a set of protocols was designed based on a generalization of the work of the OAI. Components adhering to these protocols were implemented and integrated into production and research DLs. These systems were then evaluated for simplicity, reusability, and performance. On the whole, this study has shown promise in the approach of applying the fundamental concepts of the OAI protocol to the task of DL component design and implementation. Further, it has shown the feasibility of building componentized DL systems using techniques that are a precursor to the Web Services approach to system design.

Resumen

The development of open source software has gone from a model characterized by skilled software developers that developed open source software for their own interest and their own needs to a model that is more business friendly and more attractive for companies and organizations. One new business model for open source software is the professional open source software model or OSS 2.0. The business model includes three roles: the open source project, the professional open source company and the user. This dissertation studies the relationship between these three roles and focuses on the development of the user role and how it may develop for a new user in a specific OSS ecosystem.

The roles in the eco system that has been studied are taken by the open source project Alfresco, the professional open source company Redpill and a user from a large international company, without any previous experience of open source software or the business model of professional open source. The result of the study showed a well developed eco system between the open source project and the professional open source company but a need of more information about the user’s role in it. Open source software is still seen by the user as an unsafe and unsecure alternative to the proprietary software available and more information about the business model of professional open source software and how the user can interact and influence the eco system is still needed.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is aimed at studying the open pit truck- shovel haulage systems using computer simulation approach. The main goal of the study is to enhance the analysis and comparison of heuristic truck dispatching policies currently available and search for an adaptive rule applicable to open pit mines. For this purpose, a stochastic truck dispatching and production simulation program is developed for a medium size open pit mine consisting of several production faces and a single dump site using GPSS/H software. Eight basic rules are modeled in separate program files. The program considers all components of truck cycle and normal distribution is used to model all these variables. The program asks the user to enter the number of trucks initially assigned to each shovel site. Full-factorial simulation experiments are made to investigate the effects of several factors including the dispatching rules, the number of trucks operating, the number of shovels operating, the variability in truck loading, hauling and return times, the distance between shovels and dump site, and availability of shovel and truck resources. The breakdown of shovel and trucks are modeled using exponential distribution. Three performance measures are selected as truck production, overall shovel utilization and overall truck utilizations. Statistical analysis of the simulation experiments is done using ANOVA method with Minitab software. Regression analysis gives coefficient of determination values, R2, of 56.7 %, 84.1 %, and 79.6 % for the three performance measures, respectively. Also, Tukey&rsquo
s method of mean comparison test is carried out to compare the basic dispatching rules. From the results of statistical analysis, it is concluded that the effects of basic truck dispatching rules on the system performance are not significant. But, the main factors affecting the performances are the number of trucks, the number of shovels, the distance between the shovels and dump site, finally the availability of shovel and truck resources. Also, there are significant interaction effects between these main factors. Finally, an adaptive rule using the standardized utilization of shovels and trucks is developed.

Resumen
Problem solving for location is one of the most critical cognitive skills that can be utilized in deriving a naive location and/or finding a primed location in large open spaces of the built environment. Wayfinding or locating objects in large open spaces is not often easy for individuals due their limitations in building effective mental models of the open space or their lack of a correct procedure for determining the grid coordinates of an object within that space. With the success of the global positioning system (GPS) in providing location information, it is expected that this technology could be utilized to control and improve building construction and facility management productivity within building interior spaces as well. However, GPS cannot perform robustly inside buildings due to the exterior walls or roofs, which weaken the signal. The Cricket indoor location support technology has been developed to respond to this limitation. Cricket uses a combination of radio frequency (RF), ultrasonic sound signals, and the triangular rule to calculate a user's current location. This research investigated performances within the context of a work order system between a human-based system and a computer-based system. Thirty subjects participated in this study. The subjects were asked to derive, find and verify a target box's location. Locating time-on-task, accuracy, and attitudes were measured. The overwhelming results demonstrated the speed and accuracy of the computer-based system over the human-based system. In addition to longer procedural processing times, subject errors included: 1) an incorrect estimation of distance, 2) an inability to correctly locate and/or project the X-axis and Y-axis grid lines, and 3) an incorrect treatment of the positive and negative characteristics of these coordinates. Even though half of the subjects liked the human-based system more, they significantly believe the computer-based system to be more accurate. All but one subject preferred that the computer-based system be used in his or her own future business. Finally, results indicate that the computer-based system does relieve humans of cognitive dependency, which may be further evidence that the computer-based system developed and tested in this study achieved its purpose.

Resumen
Chapters 2 and 3 contain an analysis of the process of energy exchange between the brane universe and the bulk spacetime. In particular we focus on graviton emission from a general, asymmetric brane into a Schwarzschild Anti-de Sitter bulk, and consider the competing mechanism of bulk black holes radiating across the brane. We discuss the global structure of these spacetimes and impose experimental constraints on the time-varying dark radiation that appears in the Friedmann equation. Chapters 4 to 8 consider quantum effects that arise in the bulk spacetimes of branes. We make the observation that brane universe generally accelerate through their bulk spacetimes, and as such may be considered Unruh observers, subject to thermal excitations from a vacuum state. In particular, we focus on an accelerating brane in Anti de Sitter spacetime and compute the response function along its trajectory. It is found that modified thermal excitations occur along stationary trajectories with accelerations above the curvature scale of the bulk, with the modification dependent on the bulk curvature and the dimensionality of spacetime. We discuss the late-time asymptotic behaviour of this Unruh radiation and find that when the matter density on the brane shrinks to zero, the temperature of bulk spacetime coincides with the temperature of the brane. In addition, a brane-based view-point in presented in which the Unruh effect is recast as particle production on a lower dimensional spacetime. Chapter 8 is a discussion of how the bulk spacetime decoheres physics on the brane and breaks unitary time evolution.

Resumen
The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the development of the next generation of spacecraft attitude control systems by designing and building a prototype open-architecture control moment gyroscope (CMG). The focus is on the CMG mechanism, with emphasis on the momentum wheel assembly. An open-architecture system enables customizable software configuration and allows for future system upgrades, component swapping and integration with other systems. This technical objective was approached through an iterative design process in which several mechanical design configurations were explored prior to the manufacturing of the final prototype. Issues related to the CMG mechanical design, the details of the CMG manufacturing process, including balancing requirements, and integration of the CMG components are discussed. Several experiments illustrate the performance of the CMG prototype. This newly designed CMG prototype will extend the capabilities of the NPS Reconfigurable Spacecraft Autonomy Testbed (R-SAT) simulator and enable demonstrations of advanced attitude control concepts for CMG spacecraft.

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California
As today’s flight test data acquisition systems grow more complex, there is an urgent need for open standards that allow Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment from different vendors to be used together. However, there is more to inter-operability than getting the wiring right – it flows through from requirements specification to the gathering of data. This paper discusses the characteristics of an open system at each interface between customer requirements and programming of the Data Acquisition Unit (DAU): • Industry standard specifications for data interchange with databases and software packages • Human readable file formats for Data Acquisition Unit (DAU) setup • Communications link from ground station equipment to DAU • Industry standard protocols for interconnection of DAUs • Intra-DAU backplane specification to allow custom acquisition functionality to be added Only by providing third-party entry points at all five layers can the goal of an open data acquisition system be achieved.

In face of the characteristics of multiple data streams, high bit rate, variable data formats, complicated frame structure and changeable application environment, the programmable PCM telemetry system needs a new data processing system with advanced telemetry system architecture. This paper fully considers the characteristics of real-time telemetry data processing, analyzes the design of open system architecture for real-time telemetry data processing system(TDPS), presents an open system architecture scheme and design of real-time TDPS, gives the structure model of distributed network system, and develops the interface between network database and telemetry database, as well as telemetry processing software with man-machine interface. Finally, a practical and multi-functional real-time TDPS with open system architecture has been built, which based on UNIX operating system, supporting TCP/IP protocol and using Oracle relational database management system. This scheme and design have already proved to be efficient for real-time processing, high speed, mass storage and multi-user operation.

Resumen
A multipurpose open architecture motion control system was developed with three platforms for control and monitoring. The Visual Basic user interface communicated with the operator and gave instructions to the electronic components. The first platform had a BASIC Stamp based controller and three stepping motors. The second platform had a controller, amplifiers and two DC servomotors. The third platform had a DSP module. In this study, each platform was used on machine tools either to move the table or to evaluate the incoming signal. The study indicated that by using advanced microcontrollers, which use high-level languages, motor controllers, DSPs (Digital Signal Processor) and microcomputers, the motion control of different systems could be realized in a short time. Although, the proposed systems had some limitations, their jobs were performed effectively.

When designing data transport systems, Telemetry and Communications engineers always face the risk that their chosen hardware will not be available or supported soon after the hardware has been installed. The best way to reduce this risk and ensure the longevity of the system is to select an open architecture standard that is supported by multiple manufacturers. This open architecture should also have the ability to be easily upgraded and provide for all of the features and flexibility that are required to be a reliable carrier-grade edge-device. The PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) developed the MicroTCA open standard to address the specific needs of these Communications and Network System Engineers. This paper describes the MicroTCA architecture and how it can be applied as the ideal edge-device solution for Networked Telemetry Systems applications.

Resumen
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
Design standards defined in this paper provide the framework to implement an open system architecture to achieve the interoperability requirements for integrated satellite control directed by USCINCSPACE. Ground segment space operations that implement these standards will provide the capability to eliminate the artificial barriers between mission unique ground systems that operate in a stove-pipe manner today. Through common support equipment and advanced workstations, operator cross training will become unnecessary. To implement interoperability, it is necessary to define standard physical, electrical, and communication interfaces and protocols, so components from different manufactures will operate together. Implementation of these standards tends to build on the natural infrastructure of today's satellite operation center and maximize the reuse of common user components for satellite control, mission payload operations and force management. The infrastructure concept uniquely blends the requirements for providing a single operator the capability to perform all tasks for these missions at a single workstation. Prototypes built and tested by the Air Force have demonstrated the feasibility and payoff of this design concept.

Resumen
The elderly citizen’s health care need some radical changes and improvements to alleviate the situation where the quality of service must be enhanced without overburdening the caregivers under the weighty workload. Much of research is done and many researchers all around the world emphasize the importance of assistive technologies. Current technological advancements in communication allow us to build systems which could be useful tools for the caregivers and allow the elderly to live more autonomous and active life. Offering stimulus to the elderly to experience with the technology could lessen the feel of social isolation and ameliorate the quality of service significantly. Shrinking electronics, mobiles and sensors do not bound the use only in homes or facilities, but allow the use in many different environments. While using technology of this kind, the caregivers could give guidance or follow the health status of a mobile elderly citizen in remote fashion and give help if needed. This thesis is also immersing in the matter by producing a Visual Guidance system that utilizes current mobile technology, actuators, sensors and uses a virtual reality as a communication medium between the caregivers and elderly citizens. The system consists of two different parts combined together to form a real-time communication system between caregivers and elderly citizen. The system uses Android smart phone’s built-in sensors to track the movement of the elderly. Those sensors are location based sensors such as GPS and acceleration and magnetometer sensors. This system provides an open map view of the world where the elderly citizen move. Also to improve the communication between the elderly and caregiver, video and audio communication has been used as one of our research aims. The caregiver can remotely use the smart phone to open video and audio communication with the elderly if needed. The system has been integrated with indicator base smart glasses so that when the elderly citizen are on the move, the caregiver can give directional advices on where and when to go. The authors used integration testing to evaluate the system and comparing the current system functions with the requirements of the system. Also the authors made sure that the delay with communication was small enough so it would be safe for the caregivers to communicate with the elderly citizen. For future work we suggested various actions such as integrating indicator based glasses with the Pupil Pro glasses, finding the most appropriate security solutions for the system and testing the system with real-life caregivers and elderly citizen.

Resumen
In principle a quantum system could be used to simulate another quantum system. The purpose of such a simulation would be to obtain information about problems which are difficult to simulate on a classical computer due to the exponential increase of the Hilbert space with the size of the system, and which cannot be readily measured or controlled in an experiment. A quantum simulator is, however, an open quantum system that will interact with the surrounding environment, which in this case are other particles in the system, and will be implemented using imperfect controls, making it subject to noise. It has been suggested that noise does not need to be controlled to the same extent as it must be for general quantum information processing. However, the effects of noise in quantum simulations are not well understood and how best to treat them in most cases is not known. In the present work we study an existing quantum algorithm for the simulation of the one-dimensional Fano-Anderson model. This algorithm was proposed for a liquid-state NMR device. We examine models of noise in the evolution using different initial states in the original model. We also add interacting spins to simulate realistic situation where an environment of spins is present. We find that states which are entangled with their environment, and sometimes correlated but not necessarily entangled have an evolution which is described by maps which are not completely positive. We discuss the conditions for this to occur and also the implications.

The rapid development of the internet and social media have democratized the innovation opportunities for small startups and individual innovators. This is creating more ways for companies to exploit external ideas for their internal innovation. The dominant use of open innovation today is in idea generation. However, some companies have gainfully applied open innovation across other phases of product development, including concept development, detailed design, manufacturing and sales. The academic literature in this area is rapidly evolving and is covering many different concepts associated with open innovation. At the same time, product development processes are also evolving and are being integrated with more digital tools and electronic workflows. Although many companies are saving R&D costs by utilizing open innovation methods, there clearly is a need to understand the right open innovation tools and processes to maximize the returns from this strategy; one approach does not fit all. This thesis builds a taxonomy of open innovation and discusses its applicability to modern product design processes. This thesis studies the applications and benefits of open innovation in all phases of product design, and suggests strategies for an optimal mix of open and closed innovation processes and tools applicable to modern product design. Challenges in incorporating open innovation and managerial strategies to overcome them are also discussed.

Resumen
This research examines the telecommunication industry and uses it as an example in order to present a general model of how ambidexterity is carried out in the context of open innovation. This emerging approach to ambidexterity has been particularly evident in the telecommunication industry where exploration and exploitation activities are established on information technology structures. Ambidexterity is the idea that successful firms simultaneously explore new ideas while exploiting existing ones in order to sustain profitability, especially in dynamic environments. Few studies have discussed ambidexterity that is carried out in contexts of open innovation. For this reason, this doctoral thesis addresses this gap in our understanding of ambidexterity, and contributes to it by examining the question: "How do ambidextrous organizations carry out exploration and exploitation in open innovation environments?" A new form of ambidexterity has been identified in this study; it is an open ambidextrous system. It exists in a particularly transparent form around organizations whose innovation activities are focused on information technology infrastructure, specifically networking technologies, as has been evident in the telecommunication industry. This presents important implications for the management information systems (MIS) literature. Open ambidextrous systems are established by organizations when they manage exploration and exploitation in open innovation environments. From that understanding ambidexterity has been identified as open. This offers important insight for the ambidexterity and open innovation literatures. As a result, organizations that adopt an open ambidextrous system are recognized as performing open exploration and open exploitation, where the two activities are perceived as two complementing systems identified as the open exploration system, and the open exploitation system. Therefore, this research combines insights from the ambidexterity, open innovation, and management information systems literatures, and contributes to them by offering a new and alternative view to ambidexterity that is based on the open innovation notion.

Herrera, Alfredo. "Open Source Hardware for Human Development". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/33399.

Texto completo
Resumen
Human Development is not a term used in casual conversation, it describes the current approach used by large aide international development organizations like the United Nations; but most people are familiar with the terms “emergency relief” and “humanitarian intervention”. Emergency relief focuses on providing assistance to save lives, alleviate suffering, or protect populations; while human development uses various societal levers to improve living conditions. The United Nation has been publishing an annual report on human development since 1990 (UNDP 1990), and it is widely recognized as a consistent measure of global living conditions. Development strategies revolve around a transfer of something valuable to an aided population: education, vaccination, fertilizers, etc. In technology-based human development projects, technology artefacts (a medical record computer system, solar electrification systems, irrigation) and related knowledge (education, operation and maintenance instruction) are those valuables being transferred. The benefits of technology are specific to each economy, and dependant on how quickly technology is adapted and integrated in the local economy (Cypher & Dietz 2008). The value of ideas increases to the degree they can be shared with and used by others (Houghton & Sheehan 2000): the more knowledge is diffused and adopted, the greater its value. The success of free and open-source software exemplifies this principle, and a growing number of scholars agree that the model also applies to hardware (Balka et al. 2009; Thompson 2008). This thesis presents research on open source hardware and its knowledge-sharing approach as a means to human development. It presents a model that leverages the collaborative design methodology of open hardware for adoption of artefacts that address pressing “humanitarian technology” needs, for example, in health or education. To achieve this, critical literature reviews on open source and on technology-based human development are first done; the findings from literature are then complemented with the findings from interviews and case studies to model a sustainable deployment strategy for open source use in human development projects. Adopting the human development paradigm defined in the first Human Development Report (“HDR1990”), which aims at three people-centered aspirations: to live a long and healthy life, to be educated and to have access to resources needed for a decent standard of living (UNDP 1990). This thesis research models its deployment strategy using the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), showing that: (a) open source hardware, like any technology used in development, can magnify effective development programs when used appropriately; (b) Dr. E.F. Schumacher’s appropriate technology principles, and P. Polak’s reinstatement, mesh very well with the open source methodology, as long as required constituents in the aided communities are taken care of (availability of electricity, internet access, technical know-how, etc.); (c) extreme affordability is particularly important for open source hardware, because a sustainable strategy is based on the belief that aided population would want to procure these artifacts if they improve their earning potential; (d) participatory human development practices work well with the open source methodology, but “solutions” must be fully verified before deployment. This document is structured in 5 chapters: introduction, literature review, research strategies, case studies and interviews, and conclusion. The appendix include three articles published on parallel work for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) on defining a strategy for the IEEE’s use of opens source technology in their humanitarian activities. This research provides insight into the new topic of open source hardware and its proposed use in the mission critical context of international development; because entrepreneurship is a key enabler to the strategy it describes, I hope the research can support future work on that aspect.

Today, most companies and organizations have some kind of intranet solution. These system solutions vary and tend to be either more or less sophisticated, but the overall purpose remains the same; distributing the organizations information to its members.

This essay is about intranet-development, and mainly devoted to explore a concept which has grown rapidly in recent years; Content Management System (CMS). I’m particular focusing on how to choose a suitable Open Source CMS, for implementation in a small organizations intranet.

The essay is the result of vast literature studies, mainly based on scientific articles from leading experts within their field. In addition I have also carried out a survey in a company intranet, in order to investigate the users’ attitude towards their CMS-intranet.

One of the most important results of the essay is my model of a modularized CMS-intranet, partially based on Knowledge Management-theory and the importance of appropriate references in order to interpret our surroundings, and logical categorization of information.

Resumen
Indirect searches for planets (such as radial velocity studies)show that their formation may be quite common. The planets are however too small and faint to be seen against the glare of their host stars; therefore, their direct detectionis limited to the nearest systems. Alternatively one can study planets by studying their "by-product" -- dust. We see raw material available for planets around young stars, anddebris dust around old stars betraying planet-induced activity. Dust has a larger surface area per unit mass compared with a large body; it can be spread over a largersolid angle, intercepting more starlight and emitting much more lightvia reprocessing. By studying dusty disks we can infer the presence of planets at larger distances. Here we present results of a survey conducted with the SpitzerSpace Telescope of debrisdisks in three open clusters. With ages of 30--100 Myrs, these clusters are old enough that the primordialdust should have accreted into planetesimals, fallen onto the star, or been blown away due to a numberof physical processes. The dust we observe must come from collisions or sublimation of larger bodies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the dustevolution in the terrestrial planet zone, analogous to the Zodiacal cloud in our Solar system. We are most sensitive to this zone becausethe peak of a 125 K black body radiation falls into the primary pass-band of our survey -- 24 micron. We investigate the fraction and amount of the infra-red excesses around intermediate- to solar-mass stars in open stellar clusterswith well defined ages. The results are analyzed in the context of disk studies at other wavelengths and ages, providing an understanding of the time-scale for diskdissipation and ultimately planet building and frequency.

In the present thesis the dynamics of the correlations between an open quantum system and its environment is investigated. This becomes feasible by means of a very useful representation of the total system-environment state. General conditions for separability and entanglement of the latter are derived, and investigated in the framework of an open quantum two-level system, which is coupled to a dissipative and a dephasing environment.

Resumen
This master’s thesis addresses scaling of content distribution sites. In a case study, the thesis investigates issues encountered on ftp.acc.umu.se, a content distribution site run by the Academic Computer Club (ACC) of Umeå University. This site is characterized by the unusual situation of the external network connectivity having higher bandwidth than the components of the system, which differs from the norm of the external connectivity being the limiting factor. To address this imbalance, a caching approach is proposed to architect a system that is able to fully utilize the available network capacity, while still providing a homogeneous resource to the end user. A set of modifications are made to standard open source solutions to make caching perform as required, and results from production deployment of the system are evaluated. In addition, time series analysis and forecasting techniques are introduced as tools to improve the system further, resulting in the implementation of a method to automatically detect bursts and handle load distribution of unusually popular files.
