We have investigated with the pulsed ESR technique at X- and Q-band frequencies the coherence and relaxation of Cu spins S = 1/2 in single crystals of diamagnetically diluted mononuclear [n-Bu4N]2[Cu(opba)] (1%) in the host lattice of [n-Bu4N]2[Ni(opba)] (99%, opba = o-phenylenebis(oxamato)) and of diamagnetically diluted mononuclear [n-Bu4N]2[Cu(opbon-Pr2)] (1%) in the host lattice of [n-Bu4N]2[Ni(opbon-Pr2)] (99%, opbon-Pr2 = o-phenylenebis(N(propyl)oxamidato)). For that we have measured the electron spin dephasing time T m at different temperatures with the two-pulse primary echo and with the special Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) multiple microwave pulse sequence. Application of the CPMG protocol has led to a substantial increase of the spin coherence lifetime in both complexes as compared to the primary echo results. It shows the efficiency of the suppression of the electron spin decoherence channel in the studied complexes arising due to spectral diffusion induced by a random modulation of the hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins. We argue that this method can be used as a test for the relevance of the spectral diffusion for the electron spin decoherence. Our results have revealed a prominent role of the opba4– and opbon-Pr2 4– ligands for the dephasing of the Cu spins. The presence of additional 14N nuclei and protons in [Cu(opbon-Pr2)]2– as compared to [Cu(opba)]2– yields significantly shorter T m times. Such a detrimental effect of the opbon-Pr2 4− ligands has to be considered when discussing a potential application of the Cu(II)−(bis)oxamato and Cu(II)−(bis)oxamidato complexes as building blocks of more complex molecular structures in prototype spintronic devices. Furthermore, in our work we propose an improved CPMG pulse protocol that enables elimination of unwanted echoes that inevitably appear in the case of inhomogeneously broadened ESR spectra due to the selective excitation of electron spins.

Nanomaterials are desirable for sensing applications. Therefore, MnO2 nanosheets and nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were used to construct a ratiometric biosensor for quantification of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The MnO2 nanosheets drove the oxidation of colorless o-phenylenediamine to OPDox, which exhibits fluorescence emission peaks at 556 nm. The fluorescence of OPDox was efficiently quenched and the NCDs were recovered as the ascorbic acid produced by the hydrolyzed alkaline phosphatase (ALP) substrate increased. Owing to the selective inhibition of ALP activity by 2,4-D and the inner filter effect, the fluorescence intensity of the NCDs at 430 nm was suppressed, whereas that at 556 nm was maintained. The fluorescence intensity ratio was used for quantitative detection. The linear equation was F = 0.138 + 3.863·C 2,4-D (correlation coefficient R2 = 0.9904), whereas the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.013 and 0.040 μg/mL. The method was successfully employed for the determination of 2,4-D in different vegetables with recoveries of 79%~105%. The fluorescent color change in the 2,4-D sensing system can also be captured by a smartphone to achieve colorimetric detection by homemade portable test kit.

After the placebo-controlled extension of the pivotal US trial of glatiramer acetate for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis ended, 208 participants entered an open-label, long-term treatment protocol. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was added to the planned evaluations of these subjects to determine the consequences of long-term treatment on MRI-defined pathology and evaluate its clinical correlates. Of the 147 subjects that remained on long-term follow-up, adequate images were obtained on 135 for quantitative MRI analysis. The initial imaging sessions were performed between June 1998 and January 1999 at 2447+61 days (mean+standard deviation) after the subject's original randomization. Clinical data from a preplanned clinical visit were matched to MRI within 3+51 days. At imaging, 66 patients originally randomized to placebo (oPBO) in the pivotal trial had received glatiramer acetate for 1476+63 days, and 69 randomized to active treatment with glatiramer acetate (oGA) were on drug for 2433+59 days. The number of documented relapses in the 2 years prior to entering the open-label extension was higher in the group originally randomized to placebo (oPBO=1.86+1.78, oGA=1.03+1.28; P=0.002). The annualized relapse rate observed during the open-label study was similar for both groups (oPBO=0.27, +0.45 oGA=0.28+0.40), but the reduction in rate from the placebo-controlled phase was greater for those beginning therapy with GA (oPBO reduced by 0.66+0.71, oGA reduced by 0.23+0.58; P=0.0002). One or more gadolinium enhancing lesions were found in 27.4% of all patients (number of distinct enhancements=1.16+2.52, total enhanced tissue volume=97+26 ml). The risk of having an enhancement was higher in those with relapses during the open-label extension (odds ratio 4.65, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.0 to 10.7; P=0.001). The odds for finding an enhancement was 2.5 times higher for those patients originally randomized to placebo (CI 1.1 to 5.4; P=0.02) compared to those always on glatiramer acetate. MRI-metrics indicative of chronic pathology, particularly measures of global cerebral tissue loss (atrophy), were uniformly worse for those originally on placebo. These observations enrich our long-term follow up of the clinical consequences of treatment with glatiramer acetate to include its apparent effects on MRI-defined pathology. They show that the effect of glatiramer acetate on enhancements is definite, but modest, consistent with the drug's described mechanisms of action, and that a delay in initiating treatment results in progression of MRI-measured pathology that can be prevented.

Dit het dus nodig geword om ernstig te besin òf en hoe Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur die gekleurde kind en ook die swart kind wat Afrikaans as 'n tweede of derde taal lees, aanspreek. Daar moet gevra word of die beeld van die swarte in die Afrikaanse kinder- en jeugliteratuur die swart/bruin kind se selfbeeld opbou. Maak dit horn trots om homself te wees, of dehumaniseer dit hom deurdat hy verneder word?

Analysis of the structure, argument and pragmatics of Galatians: An initial orientation Initially three methodological pitfalls regarding the analysis of the overall structure of Galatians are discussed: that of historical reconstruction of its polemical situation, of the rhetorical model and of the bipartite Pauline division between theological exposition and paraenesis. Then the macrostructural relations, the argument and the pragmatics of Galatians are analysed. Two main sections are identified, the first (Galatians 1:11-4:11) consisting of a double argument for the legitimacy of Paul's gospel, the second (4:12-6:10) being an appeal concentrating on Christian freedom.

This work suggested that Cu2+ ion coordinated by the peptide with a histidine (His or H) residue in the first position from the free N-terminal reveals oxidase-mimicking activity. A biotinylated polymer was prepared by modifying His residues on the side chain amino groups of lysine residues (denoted as KH) to chelate multiple Cu2+ ions. The resulting biotin-poly-(KH-Cu)20 polymer with multiple catalytic sites was employed as the signal label for immunoassay. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) was determined as the model target. The captured biotin-poly-(KH-Cu)20 polymer could catalyze the oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (OPDox). The signal was proportional to PSA concentration from 0.01 to 2 ng/mL, and the detection limit was found to be eight pg/mL. The high sensitivity of the method enabled the assays of PSA in real serum samples. The work should be valuable for the design of novel biosensors for clinical diagnosis.

This paper proposes a method based on a new word embedding approach for matching business process model. The proposed method aligns two process models in four steps. First activity labels are extracted and pre-processed to remove meaningless words, then each word composing an activity label and using a semantic similarity metric based on WordNet is represented with an n-dimensional vector in the space of the vocabulary of the two labels to be compared. Based on these representations, a vector representation of each activity label is computed by averaging the vectors representing words found in the activity label. Finally, the two activity labels are reported as similar if their similarity score computed using the cosine metric is greater than some predefined threshold. An experiment was conducted on well-known dataset to assess the performance of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed method shared the first place with RMM/NHCM and OPBOT tools and can be effective in matching process models.
