Resumen
This chapter focuses on the question of whether concrete particular objects deserve to be classified as substances within a hylomorphic ontology, despite their metaphysical complexity, and, if so, according to what criterion of substancehood or “ontological privilege.” It is common to conceive of the substances as ontologically independent, following some preferred sense of “independence.” But what is this sense of “ontological independence” and do matter–form compounds qualify as substances when this notion is applied to them? This chapter discusses various relations defined in the literature under the heading of ontological dependence, beginning with existential construals of ontological dependence and turning next to construals of ontological dependence that are formulated in terms of a non-modal conception of essence. When evaluated against various plausible measures of success, it turns out that even the most promising candidate relations are open to objections.

Resumen
Part Two duly concludes by spelling out in more detail what this paradigm shift to a non-dualist historicism would involve in actual practice. Essentially, it requires a distinctly recursive mode of analysis, whereby our historical subjects themselves determine the particular terms upon which their world is to be studied. This mode of analysis would begin by trying to establish the local model of social being upon which a given people’ s way of life was premised. This effectively means recovering their particular prevailing metaphysical and ontological certainties, their dominant shared account of what was and could be always already there in their world. The various practices and mechanisms of their way of life can then be analysed according to this same local model of social being. The chapter ends by answering a range of possible questions that readers may have about the proposed paradigm shift, clarifying further its nature, its theoretical parameters, and its analytical purposes.

Resumen
Proposition 11 of Part 1 of Spinoza’s Ethics states that God necessarily exists. Although his demonstration of the proposition is often said to constitute his ontological argument for the existence of God, and to report an essentially private “rational perception” of God’s existence, he provides four distinct “proofs” for the proposition. This chapter analyzes the four proofs and the relations among them. Like ontological arguments, they depend crucially on a definition of God that is intended, when grasped, to show that God necessarily exists; but like most cosmological arguments, they also depend crucially on a principle of sufficient reason. The last two proofs can be seen to address an objection, concerning the principle that substances cannot share attributes, that might otherwise be raised to the first two proofs.
