Resumen
This writing analyzes a short story entitles The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas written by Ursula Le Guin which highlights the elements of Utopia and Dystopia found in a society as reflected in the text such as the happiness, cheerfulness which are almost perfect. Besides, the feeling of secure is also felt by the inhabitants of Omelas so that they don’t need a government to manage their life. On the contrary, the element of dystopia is ironic, in which the happiness felt by the people is paid by a little child who is locked in dark, small room. This child is victimized to guarantee the perfect life of the people in Omelas. Consequently, those who can’t accept this reality decide to leave Omelas, they are the ones who walk away from Omelas. Related to that, this analysis applies descriptive analysis in which the result will be explained descriptively. From the description, it will show how the elements of Utopia and Dystopia are reflected in the life of the people in Omelas which describe the society of Omelas and its belief in Sacrificing the child for the sake of the happiness of the community.

Resumen
This study examines the concept of utilitarianism presented in the short story "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" in "The Wind's Twelve Quarter" by Ursula K. Le Guin. Through an ethical approach in sociology literature, this study aims to analyze the ethical implications of collective action in achieving general happiness in Omelas. Through analysis of the sociology of literature, this study reveals the social practices of utilitarianism presented in the story. In utilitarianism through ethical theory developed by philosophers Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, argues that a good action is an action that produces as much happiness as possible for as many people as possible. In the context of this short story, society has collectively chosen to maintain general happiness by ignoring the fate of the oppressed individual. This raises deep ethical questions about the justice and morality of emotional action. This study also analyzes the attitudes of individuals who choose to leave Omelas. This action shows disapproval of the principle of utilitarianism which sacrifices one individual for the sake of broad happiness. The attitude of individuals who dare to walk raises ethical overtones about our responsibilities to society and individuals. Through an analysis of ethical theory in a literary sociology approach, this study concludes that "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" pushes to limit the ethical boundaries of utilitarianism and change moral compromises in achieving peace. The social and psychological implications of this story awaken our awareness of the moral dilemmas associated with emotional action and raise deep ethical questions about human values and justice. Resumen
Science fiction is gaining academic recognition as a tool for teaching ethics and engaging potentially resistant students in communication and critical thinking, but there are not many lesson plans available for how to implement science fiction in the classroom. I hope to address that gap by sharing a successful lesson plan I developed while teaching a first-year composition and ethics course at the Colorado School of Mines. “Stand Where You Stand on Omelas” combines writing, communication, and ethical decision making by asking students to defend what they would do as a citizen in Ursula K. Le Guin’s short story, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” where a young child’s torment ensures the prosperity and happiness of society as a whole.

Resumen
“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula Kroeber Le Guin are two stories depicting societies in which adhering to the traditionally imposed ‘scapegoating’ ritual ensures the prosperity of the majority of the population. Previous researches that analyzed the two texts, singularly or in tandem, predominantly emphasize the human capacity for evil as inherent in these communities through their traditions and some, admittedly, highlight the impact these traditions have on the individuals living in such communities. But no research has used the postulations of Friedrich Nietzsche in this regard. This paper intends to provide insight into this unexplored area by investigating the communities portrayed in the two stories, their respective traditional values and the community members in light of Nietzsche’s ‘master-slave morality.’ The purpose of this research is to find out how traditions exist in those communities, how these traditions are constituted by particular values, how these values are, in turn, enforced by these traditions, how those values correspond to the Nietzschean concepts, how the members represent different Nietzschean types, and how they respond to the aforementioned values. Thus, the theoretical framework is based on Nietzsche’s categorization of human beings into ‘master type and slave type’ categories as well as his theorization of ‘master-slave morality.’ Some definitional understanding of ‘tradition’, ‘master’ and ‘authority’ assist in this regard as well. The discourse of “The Lottery” as well as “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” has been considered in light of such theoretical and conceptual understandings to assess the dynamics of the communities they depict. This paper’s investigation of the communities & the members found in “The Lottery” and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” shows that – traditions existing in those societies enforce particular values & these values, in turn, sustain those traditions; some of the members, e.g. – Tessie, who protests against the stoning ritual & the ones in Omelas who show dissatisfaction with the child’s cruel treatment, can be categorized to be master types as theorized by Nietzsche and the ones to comply with the scapegoating process(es) can be categorized as slave types. This adherence by the slave types and the consequential peaceful prosperity implicates the values being discussed as Nietzschean slave values. This study further shows that the scapegoating ritual(s) is imbued with a utilitarian stipulation for the ‘greater good for the greater number’ which creates a moral judgment & this moral judgment is used by the slave types to justify their complicity in the seemingly required cruelty and by the community itself to dominate the master types, as a result of which the master types are faced with a duality of choices – to accept the traditions of their communities, or to leave.

Resumen
ABSTRACT The phrase “ambiguous utopia” was coined by Ursula K. Le Guin in the subtitle of her novel, The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia (1974). That work appeared when utopian narratives had been displaced by dystopian imaginaries. This article embarks on a comparative analysis of three short stories: Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” (1973), Angélica Gorodischer’s “Of Navigators” (1979), and N. K. Jemisin’s “The Ones Who Stay and Fight” (2018). Each author installs ambiguity at the center of their open-ended utopian imaginaries as a way to challenge dogma, pessimism, and complacency. Le Guin interrogates the boundary between belief and knowledge to hold the threat of authoritarianism at bay. Gorodischer, a friend and contemporary of Le Guin, is considered a central figure of Argentine science fiction and fantasy. Her story imagines the discovery of a second Earth set in 1492 and highlights the need for utopianism to challenge the legacy of colonization. Finally, Jemisin’s story is a critical homage to “Omelas.” Jemisin shares the decolonial impetus of Gorodischer’s fiction, and she constructs Um-Helat on an explicitly antiracist foundation. Instead of walking away, her characters actively fight the creeping threat of intolerance while working toward that better place.

Resumen
In this article, we interrogate our experiences as four women academics with two short stories written in conversation with one another: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin, and “The Ones Who Stay and Fight,” written by N. K. Jemisin. Both Le Guin and Jemisin’s stories evoke questions about ethics and responsibility in the face of oppression. More specifically, both stories offer complicated and nuanced considerations for how we respond methodologically and pedagogically to systemic oppressions and violence as feminist subjects.

Resumen
Those Who Walk Away from Omelas and Those Who Turn Away from Catalonia. Catalan Independence Aspirations in the Context of Political Human Rights Symbols of the independence movement − whether in the form of yellow ribbons, attached to clothes by the inhabitants of Catalonia or slogans, painted on the facades of buildings and calling for the restoration of freedom of those detained after the referendum of autumn 2017 − have become an almost integral part of Barcelona, photographed by foreign tourists with no smaller the frequency than architectural works of Antonio Gaudi. The fact that so-called “Catalan case” arouses growing interest of external observers, became possible not only thanks to the activities of the separatists themselves, who try to draw the attention of the international community, but also due to legal, ethical and moral doubts that constitute not background, but rather the first plan of Spanish-Catalan political struggles.

Colorectal cancer has a high incidence and is known to be influenced by dietary factors. The fatty acids -3, -6 and -9 are believed to be involved in its genesis and prevention. The objective was to evaluate the effect of hyperlipidic, normolipidic and hypolipidic diets with low -6:-3 ratio and high -9:-6 ratio on azoxymethane (AOM) induced colorectal carcinogenesis in rats. Sixty 3-week-old male Wistar rats weighing 40-50g were assigned to 5 groups of 12 each: GI=Standard diet without AOM; GII=Standard diet and AOM; GIII=Hyperlipidic diet and AOM; GIV=Normolipidic diet and AOM; GV=Hypolipidic diet and AOM. Weight and ingestion were registered 4 times/week until the 36th week. Colons were analyzed for tumors, aberrant crypt foci, number of crypts per focus, incidence, differentiation, invasion and carcinoma multiplicity. The levels of total and fractionated cholesterol, triglycerides, glycemia, ALT, AST, glutathione, TBARS, interleukins were determined in plasma. Apoptosis, mitosis, NFkB, COX-2 and K-Ras were measured in tumor tissue. Body mass was greater in GI and GII than in GIII, GIV and GV. Ingestion was greater in GI and GII than in GIII, GIV and GV. The number of aberrant crypts and the total number of foci with <5 and >5 crypts decreased in GIV and GV compared to GII. In GV, the incidence of tumors was reduced. The index of carcinogenesis was higher in GII than in GV. Glutathione was higher and TBARS was lower in GV. GIII was higher than in GI with regard to IL-10. IFNγ was higher in GII than in GIII and GV. TNF-α was higher in GIV and GV than in GI. Apoptosis increased in GV, GIV and GIII in relation to GII and GI. The mitotic index was lower in GV than in GII, GIII and GIV. In conclusion, hyperlipidic, normolipidic and hypolipidic diets with low -6:-3 ratio and high -9:-6 ratio reduce ingestion, body mass and lipid peroxidation; increase the antioxidant capacity and offer protection against colorectal carcinogenesis.

Novak, Elizabeth Marie. "Dietary omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and neonatal liver metabolism". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/36743.

Resumen
It is well-known that the n-3 fatty acids are important regulators of fat and glucose metabolism in adult liver; however, to date most research on the importance of n-3 fatty acids in early development has focused on the brain, with little consideration of effects on other organs. This research addressed the importance of the essential n-3 and n-6 fatty acids for the liver during early development. A series of studies were conducted to address the impact of the amount, balance, and types of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids in the maternal diet and infant milk diet on lipids, protein abundance, gene expression, and relevant metabolites in the developing liver. Using milk-formula fed piglets, the first study demonstrated that the supply of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids impacts infant liver fatty acids, with high dietary n-6 fatty acids decreasing hepatic n-3 fatty acids in a pattern similar to n-3 fatty acid deficiency. Using the rat to address the impact of maternal fatty acid nutrition in gestation and lactation on the infant liver, the second study showed that adding n-3 fatty acids to the maternal diet lead to higher long chain n-3 fatty acids in neonatal liver, and this was associated with higher expression of enzymes of fatty acid oxidation and lower expression of enzymes of glycolysis and amino acid catabolism, with altered amino acid patterns when compared to n-3 fatty acid deficiency. In the third study, providing long chain n-3 fatty acids in the maternal diet led to marked increase in long chain n-3 fatty acids in milk and in the liver of the milk-fed rat pups, and this was associated with lower gene expression for enzymes of fatty acid synthesis and glycolysis and higher gene expression for an enzyme of ketogenesis in the neonatal liver. These studies provide new knowledge to show that the amount, types and balance of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids in the maternal and infant diet are relevant to hepatic metabolic regulation in the early postnatal period. Nutrition support of young infants should consider the needs and functions of n-3 fatty acids beyond the brain.

Resumen
The reactions $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ 2$ pi sp+2 pi sp-2 pi sp0$ and $ gamma gamma to pi sp+ pi sp- pi sp0 pi sp0$ have been studied by using the ARGUS detector at the $e sp+e sp-$ storage ring DORIS II at DESY.
In the $2 pi sp+2 pi sp-2 pi sp0$ final state the production of $ omega$-mesons is observed and in particular the reaction $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ $ omega omega$ is seen for the first time. The cross section for $ gamma gamma to omega omega$ is found to have an enhancement at $ sim$1.9GeV/c$ sp2$ of about 12 nb. The topological cross sections for the reactions $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ 2$ pi sp+2 pi sp-2 pi sp0$ and $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ $ omega pi sp+ pi sp- pi sp0$ are also measured.
The production of charged $ rho$-mesons is observed in the $ pi sp+ pi sp- pi sp0 pi sp0$ final state. The cross section for the reaction $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ $ rho sp+ rho sp-$ is measured for the first time. The cross section did not show a threshold enhancement similar to that found in the reaction $ gamma gamma$ $ to$ $ rho sp0 rho sp0$ and is about a factor of four smaller. A spin parity analysis of the $ rho sp+ rho sp-$ system shows that the cross section is dominated by the two amplitudes $J sp{P}$ = 0$ sp+$ and $J sp{P}$ = 2$ sp+$ with helicity 2.

The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Biotery by USP in Pirassununga - SP. In the first phase were used 42 male rabbits growing New Zealand breed individually maintained throughout the experiment. The biological assay amounted to 150 days. In phase 1, the animals received diets induced hypercholesterolemia (0.5% cholesterol) with imbalance in the ratio of Omega-6 / Omega-3 (n-6 / n-3) 15:1 and vice versa, and balance the ratio of n-6 / n-3 of 4:1 (control), totaling six tests, which were randomly divided into 7 groups of six rabbits each. Sunflower and fish oils were used as sources of fatty acids polyunsaturated n-6 and n-3, respectively. In Phase 2, the remaining animals continued to receive the same diets except in group B (hypercholesterolemia) who went on to receive the control treatment to check the effect. At the end of Phase 1, three animals from each group were sacrificed with the aorta artery removed for determination of lipid plaques, histopathology, immunohistochemistry and total cholesterol to verify the expression of LDL-receptor enzyme and determination of histopathological liver tissue. In serum profile were made determinations of fatty acids, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Aortic endothelial cells of rabbits were isolated to perform the dose response test with fish oil to identify the best value for the consumption of these fatty acids compared to the in vivo experiment. The objective of this work was to monitor the effects of provision for each diet on total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDLcholesterol and triglycerides in the blood of rabbits. In general, the profile of fatty acids in serum corresponded directly with the diet consumed. The main effects of polyunsaturated Omega 3 fatty acids was the reduction of serum lipids when the remaining rabbits with hypercholesterolemic diet (0.5% cholesterol and n-6: n-3 2:1) have received the balance of the relationship fatty acid 4:1 n-6: n-3. The total cholesterol content in serum, the growth of arteries and atheroma were influenced by a high intake of n-6 fatty acids and n-3 associated with the addition of cholesterol in diets. On the other hand we verified that the excess of Omega 3 with or without cholesterol contributed to the aggravation of the atherosclerotic plaques including deposition of calcium in them and endothelial walls. Probably the excess of n-3 has caused the opposite effect to their anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic and anti-aggregatory functions. Hypercholesterolemic diets caused hepatic steatosis and high intake of Omega-6 to the detriment of low consumption of Omega -3 induced chronic hepatitis. High consumption of Omega-3, no cholesterol, decreased hepatic steatosis in animals. Highlighting the importance of the balanced intake of this fatty acids, since this enzyme is controlled by circulating free cholesterol. In dose-response test in endothelial cells of the rabbits aorta was evident that the best ratio of n-6: n-3, nine times more than the recommended concentration of Omega 3 to 5:1.

Resumen
This thesis touches on many different aspects of homogeneous relational structures. We start with an introductory chapter in which we present all the background from model theory and homogeneity necessary to understand the results in the main chapters. The second chapter is a list of examples. We present examples of binary and ternary homogeneous relational stuctures, and prove the simplicity or non-simplicity of their theory. Many of these examples are well-known structures (the ordered rational numbers, random graphs and hypergraphs, the homogeneous Kn-free graphs), while others were constructed during the first stages of research. In the same chapter, we present some combinatorial results, including a proof of the TP2 in the Fraïssé limit of semifree amalgamation classes in the language of n-graphs, such that all the minimal forbidden configurations of the class of size at least 3 are all triangles. The third chapter contains the main results of this thesis. We prove that supersimple finitely homogeneous binary relational structures cannot have infinite monomial SU-rank, show that primitive binary supersimple homogeneous structures of rank 1 are “random” in the sense that all their minimal forbidden configurations are of size at most 2, and partially classify the supersimple 3-graphs under the assumption of stable forking in the theories of finitely homogeneous structures with supersimple theory. The fourth chapter is a proof of the directed-graph version of a well-known result by Erdős, Kleitman and Rothschild. Erdős et al. prove that almost all finite labelled trianglefree simple graphs are bipartite, and we prove that almost all finite labelled directed graphs in which any three distinct vertices span at least one directed arc consist of two disjoint tournaments, possibly with some directed arcs from one to the other.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic progressive inflammatory disease characterised by airflow limitation. Several pro-inflammatory markers are thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of COPD. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for COPD, and diet may be a modifiable risk factor for its progression & management. Dietary supplementation with omega3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 PUFAs) may be effective therapeutically in patient COPD. Aim: To determine the plasma basal level of inflammatory biomarkers in the study population, to determine the inflammatory biomarkers release from Peripheral blood mononuclear (PBMCs), and to investigate the effect of omega-3 PUFAs, on inflammatory biomarkers released from PBMCs. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 42 subjects; patients with COPD, 15 healthy smokers (HS), and 12 healthy groups (HNS). Selected biomarkers level was measured in Plasma and PBMCs by ELISA. Individual lipid profile analysis was carried out on RBCs fraction. Result: Plasma high levels of CRP and Fibrinogen and low level of CC-16 were observed in COPD patients when compared with healthy controls. The basal release of IL6, IL8, TNFα, and CD31 from PBMCs was significantly differing in COPD and HS groups compared to HNS group. Omega-3 PUFA (EPA and DHA) reduce IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α release from PBMCs. The fatty acid composition of the erythrocyte membranes in patients group was unmodified. Discussion: This study showed that high level of several inflammatory biomarkers that were detected systemically in COPD group might associate with the disease systemic inflammation. EPA and DHA possess the ability to reduce the cytokines production from COPD inflammatory immune cells. Additionally, no correlation was observed between fatty acid profile analysis and COPD.
