Pollard, Nicholas. "Occupation in occupational therapy : a political perspective". Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2013. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/17029/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Occupational therapy is broadly about the experience of ‘doing’ as the basis of human participation. This requires access to the means of participation: space, facilities and resources for different forms of human action. People who have experienced disability are frequently prevented from engaging in activities which other people can access, and can benefit from. Their rights to social participation at all levels are restricted, and this is a political aspect of their impairment - something that is recognized in feminist discourse in the recognition of the relationship between the personal and the political. Consequently rehabilitation has a dimension which is not just about restoring or adapting function, but also about addressing the social and political circumstances which produce barriers to occupation. The submitted works discuss a rights based approach to human occupation, which in turn derives from a narrative understanding of ‘doing’ as an individual and collective expression of actions. My most significant and original contributions to occupational therapy and occupational science concern the development of an argument for the understanding of a political dimension to human occupation. These works are accompanied by research papers which evidence some aspects of my theories. In its concentration on clinical and medically led objectives the profession has infrequently recognized the relationship between health conditions and the wider issues of social and economic disparities. Part of my work has called attention to the systematic nature of exclusions which prevent access to meaningful and purposeful occupation, and calls for therapists to work with their clients not only in terms of traditional intervention, but to address them through political alliance.

Resumen
This study explores the meaning of occupation, defined as a “conceptual entity… [which] includes all the things that people do in their everyday life” (Sundkvist & Zingmark, 2003, p. 40). Using a phenomenological hermeneutic method informed by the writings of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) and Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002), this study provides an understanding of the meaning of occupation interpreted from the perspective of 12 New Zealand adults who experienced a disruption to their occupations. The review of the literature suggests that early writers from the time of the Bible identified that occupation is not ‘wide open’, there are many factors that shape how and when a person engages in an occupation, which in turn shapes the meaning of occupation. Within the occupational therapy literature, discussion of the meaning of occupation is overshadowed by describing and defending practice. In occupational science scholars and researchers have focused largely on understanding occupation from a conceptual perspective rather than the ontological meaning of occupation. The exploration of the meaning of occupation is being advanced by only a few. In this study participants told their stories about their occupations. Data were analysed by indentifying key themes and engaging in a hermeneutic thinking process of going back to the work of Heidegger and Gadamer. Writing and re-writing was the method used to bring new understandings to the data. The findings of this thesis suggest that the meaning of occupation is complex, and tends to remain hidden. Analysis focuses on the call, Being-with, and possibilities. The call to occupation seems to be in response to what it is we care about or what concerns us. Being-with others while engaging in an occupation creates a bond and mood; the meaning of occupation changes depending on who the occupation is done with or without. The meaning of occupation is also revealed in the possibilities that are opened up or closed down. Occupation shows both ourselves and others what it is we are capable of in the journey of who it is we are becoming. Each of these facets of meaning work in unison and can be likened to three cogs in a wheel, each interconnected with the others. The thesis concludes by recognising that not all voices have been heard and argues for uncovering more about the meaning of occupation from the perspective of lived experience. A challenge is made to consider the meaning of occupation not as something that is individually derived but as something that is connected to the broader context of the world and others in the world.

Resumen
Background: Occupational therapy (OT) plays an important role in providing early childhood interventions for children with developmental delay. While paediatric OT has long been guided by developmental principles, occupation-centred interventions have been promoted during the last decades, but no unifying definition exists about the core features. Aims/Objectives: The aim of this paper is to (a) identify and describe how occupation-based and occupation-focused interventions are demonstrated in paediatric occupational therapy for infants and young children with developmental delay, (b) identify which outcomes these interventions address and (c) analyse which outcome measures are used. Material and Methods: Eight databases and 15 OT journals were searched. Included studies were peer-reviewed primary sources published in English since 1999, selected based on the terminology proposed by Fisher (2013). Nineteen papers met inclusion criteria. Results: Eight occupation-based, two occupation-focused and nine occupation-based and occupation-focused interventions were identified. Outcomes related mainly to occupational and play skill acquisition as well as mastery of co-occupations. A limited number of occupation-focused outcome measures was implemented. Conclusions: Several occupation-centred interventions have been researched. Gaps in knowledge exist regarding measures taking into account (co-)occupational performance and young children’s perspective. Significance: OTs might want to expand their scope of practice to include all occupational domains and increase parent-delivered interventions in natural environments. Measures used should be relevant to occupational performance and take into account the parent’s and children’s view. Use of uniform terminology can aid identification of evidence and clear placement of OT among other professionals.

Resumen
Changes in health care delivery practices are impacting the provision of care in all venues. Occupational therapists working in hospital settings strive to meet professional mandates for occupation-based practice within a medical-model system. Ethical practice is another aspect of service provision vulnerable to contextual influences. The aims of the two studies reported here were to explore occupational therapists’ experiences with occupation-based practice, and with ethical issues, in hospital settings. Grounded theory methods were employed for both studies. Data were collected via individual, semi-structured interviews with 22 participants for the first study. For the second study, nine participants participated in individual, semi-structured interviews, journaling, and follow up interviews. Data analysis resulted in four emergent themes for each study. The main themes of the first study were Occupation-based practice expresses professional identity; Occupation-based practice is more effective; Occupation-based practice can be challenging in the clinic; and, Occupation-based practice takes creativity to adapt. The four themes of the second study were Anything less would be unethical: Key issues; I trust my gut: Affective dimension of ethical practice; Ethical practice is expected but challenging; and, It takes a village. Occupational therapists negotiate challenges inherent in contemporary hospital-based practice to provide occupation-based services and to practice ethically. Occupation-based practice is perceived to be more effective than biomedical approaches to intervention. Therapists must employ creative strategies to overcome challenges presented by medical-model service delivery contexts in order to provide occupation-based interventions. In comparison to other health care professionals working in adult rehabilitation practice, occupational therapists experience both common and unique ethical issues. A discovery of this study was that occupational therapists also experience ethical tensions related to team members’ and families’ sometimes subtle, and less frequently explicit, requests to falsify recommendations in documentation. Experiences with ethical issues include an inherent affective component in the form of moral distress and a strong sense of caring. The impact of systemic/organizational and relational forces is a reality that contemporary occupational therapists must negotiate in order to provide occupation-based and ethical practice.

Zingmark, Magnus. "Occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions for community-dwelling older people : Intervention effects in relation to facets of occupational engagement and cost effectiveness". Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Arbetsterapi, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-100064.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background  Occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions can potentially promote occupational engagement among community-dwelling older people, but there is limited evidence to identify the most effective and cost-effective interventions. For independent-living older people, there is a lack of evidence to determine if occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions have an effect on their occupational engagement. For older people who need assistance because of bathing disabilities, there is limited evidence of the effects of occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions on their occupational engagement or for reducing or omitting their need for assistance. Finally, there is limited evidence to determine if occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions implemented for community-dwelling older people are cost effective. Aim The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effects and cost effectiveness of occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions for two groups of community-dwelling older people, independent-living, community-dwelling older people and older people with bathing disabilities. Method Studies I and II were based on an exploratory randomized controlled trial. One hundred and seventy seven persons, 77–82 years, single living, and without need for home help were randomized to a no-intervention control group or to one of three occupational therapy interventions focused on promoting occupational engagement: an individual intervention, an activity group or a discussion group. In study I, effect sizes for leisure engagement and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) tasks were estimated for each intervention in relation to the control group to identify the most effective intervention at 3 and 12 months after baseline. In study II, the effects on quality adjusted life years (QALYs) and the total costs for the intervention, social services provided by the municipality and health care were used evaluate cost-effectiveness. Study III was a quasi-experimental clinical trial and included 95 persons, 65+, who had applied for municipality-based home help with bathing. For participants in the intervention group, occupational therapists implemented occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions. No occupational therapy intervention was implemented for those in the control group, but they were allocated home help services if judged to need it based on an assessment by a municipality care manager. Evaluations of ADL ability, self-rated health and allocated home help were implemented at baseline and after 15 weeks. Study IV involved the use of decision-modeling based on a five state Markov model that included levels of dependency in ADLs, place of residency and death. Probabilities for transitions between states in the model, QoL scores and societal costs for each state were derived from previous research. Overall, the model was based on research indicating that more severe levels of dependency reduced QALY scores and increased societal costs. Previous trials have provided evidence that an occupation-focused and occupation-based intervention implemented to reduce bathing disabilities increased the probability of independence of home help. The Markov model was used to evaluate cost-effectiveness over 8 years for an intervention compared to no intervention. Results The results of study I indicated that each intervention had a small positive effect on minimizing a decline in leisure engagement and/or ADL, but no intervention was clearly superior. In study II, the results indicated that the interventions delivered in a group format positively affected self-rated health. The discussion group was the most cost-effective intervention. The results of study III indicated that the intervention had no effect on ADL ability or self-rated health. There was, however, a large difference in the allocation of home help at follow up, indicating that the intervention was effective in reducing dependency on home help for bathing. The results of study IV indicated that compared to no intervention, the intervention resulted in a positive accumulation of QALYs and lower costs for every year during the entire 8 year period. Conclusion This thesis provides evidence to support the implementation of occupation-focused and occupation-based interventions for independent-living, community-dwelling older people in order to reduce their decline in occupational engagement and improve their self-rated health; the interventions also have the potential to be cost effective. This thesis also provides evidence that an occupation-focused and occupation-based intervention implemented for older people with bathing disabilities was effective in promoting independence from home help for bathing. Finally, an occupation-focused and occupation-based intervention that increased the probability of being independent of home help for bathing had a positive impact on the long term accumulation of QALYs and reduced societal costs and, therefore, can be considered very cost effective.

Resumen
Introduction: The prevalence of mental disorders is rising across the world and in South Africa driving the need for effective, occupation-centred practice in acute mental health care. In the acute setting, however, many occupational therapists experience challenges to practising in an occupation-centred manner. Occupation though remains the core construct of occupational therapy and occupational therapists everywhere are being urged to rediscover the power of occupation and embrace, develop, and maintain an occupation-centred practice. Aim: This study aimed to describe occupation-centred practice from the perspective of occupational therapists working in acute mental health care, in and around the City of Tshwane, South Africa. Methodology: A qualitative, explorative, descriptive design was used. Through maximum variance purposeful sampling nineteen participants were recruited to two focus groups. Transcriptions were analysed using the six steps of thematic analysis as described by Braun and Clarke to construct themes. Results: Four themes were constructed namely, 1. The process of occupation-centred practice, 2. Activities enable occupation-centred practice, 3. The theoretical underpinnings of occupation-centred practice and 4. Influencers of occupation-centred practice. Conclusion: Occupational therapists confirmed the centrality of occupation in their practice and further described occupation-centred practice as a process that entails the use of activities to facilitate experiences. Theoretical constructs that were helpful in guiding occupation-centred practice were highlighted. Influencers were experienced as either supporting or constraining occupation-centred practice. Significance: This study contributes to the evidence base of the profession in South Africa, ensuring that Occupational Therapy maintains its unique role and contribution to acute mental health care.

Resumen
This thesis explores the nature of engagement in occupation (meaningful activity) and the different levels at which people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities may engage. Research suggests that many are poorly supported to do this meaningfully at home. When through circumstances beyond their control, people do very little, occupational injustice arguably results, impacting on physical and mental wellbeing and quality of life.

Resumen
This thesis analyses the notion of control in the law of military occupation. It addresses the following research question: what does control denote and what are its implications for military occupation? More specifically, it demonstrates that in present-day occupations, control as such occurs in different forms and variations. The polymorphic features of occupation can be seen in the way states establish control over territory either directly or indirectly, and in the manner in which they retain, relinquish or regain it. The thesis also evidences that control found in Geneva Convention IV 1949 affords the most favourable and practicable protection to civilians and comes forward with a very adaptable application with the view of enhancing and reinforcing the protection of civilians. The thesis encompasses five chapters. Chapter I deals with control in general international law, revealing that different forms of control are used by different branches of international law for different purposes. Chapter II offers a clear test for establishing control over territory for the purposes of military occupation in International Humanitarian Law. Chapter III untangles the concept of indirect effective control, which gives rise to situations of military occupation by an intermediary. Chapter IV deals with relinquishing control over territory, thus establishing a test for occupation ending, determining the end of occupation to be at variance with assessing its beginning. Finally, Chapter V analyses the effect of control on a state’s substantive obligations both under International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law.

Resumen
Thesis (MSc (Logistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008.
The primary question considered in this study is whether a small population of a biological species introduced into a resource-heterogeneous environment, where it competes for these resources with an already established native species, will be able to invade successfully. A two-component autonomous system of reaction-diffusion equations with spatially inhomogeneous Lotka-Volterra competitive reaction terms and diffusion coefficients is derived as the governing equations of the competitive scenario. The model parameters for which the introduced species is able to invade describe the realized niche of that species. A linear stability analysis is performed for the model in the case where the resource heterogeneity is represented by, and the diffusion coefficients are, two-toned functions. In the case where the native species is not directly affected by the resource heterogeneity, necessary and sufficient conditions for successful invasion are derived. In the case where the native species is directly affected by the resource heterogeneity only sufficient conditions for successful invasion are derived. The reaction-diffusion equations employed in the model are deterministic. However, in reality biological species are subject to stochastic population perturbations. It is argued that the ability of the invading species to recover from a population perturbation is correlated with the persistence of the species in the niche that it occupies. Hence, invasion time is used as a relative measure to quantify the rate at which a species’ population distribution recovers from perturbation. Moreover, finite difference and spectral difference methods are employed to solve the model scenarios numerically and to corroborate the results of the linear stability analysis. Finally, a case study is performed. The model is instantiated with parameters that represent two different cultivars of barley in a hypothetical environment characterized by spatially varying water availability and the sufficient conditions for successful invasion are verified for this hypothetical scenario.

Deltagarna skattade i genomsnitt hög aktivitetsbalans.
Computer use has increased in society and young guys played the most computer games. Computer gaming has been related to both health problems and positive effects. The subjective experience of occupational balance is important for the health and within occupational therapy. The aim was to describe self-perceived occupational balance among guys (16-20 years) who played computer games. A quantitative survey was made among 58 computer gaming guys. Data collection was made through Occupational Balance Questionnaire. The sample was made with regard to convenience and the participants studied at high schools. They rated average high occupational balance. There was a correlation between the time playing computer games and self-rated occupational balance. Some of the participants experienced that playing computer games took time away from other things they wanted to do, for example sleep, school work and more important things were lesser prioritized. Societal norms may have influenced the participants to see computer gaming as unimportant. Computer gaming was meaningful and one of several aspects that influenced the occupational balance. The study confirmed the occupational therapists role to apply a holistic perspective and promote meaningful occupations. Further research would increase the understanding how computer gaming affects youths’ occupational balance and health.

Ritchie, Donna Michelle. "Men's self-perceptions of masculinity in response to acquired illness or injury and subsequent changes in occupational roles". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Health Science, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10200.

Texto completo
Resumen
Hegemonic Masculinity informs every aspect of a man’s life regardless of whether they conform to the standards or reject them. Although masculinity informs occupational roles, it can also be seen as an occupation in its own right. Illnesses and injuries can challenge masculine status and result in loss of identity, as well as changing men’s abilities, transforming their occupational roles and providing a challenge to their self-perception of masculinity. There are significant gaps in the literature; particularly regarding the impact health status has on masculine perceptions within a New Zealand context and the idea of masculinity as an occupation. This study goes someway to address these gaps. A qualitative descriptive methodology was employed to understand and describe the stories of 12 men living with the ongoing effects of illness or injury. A general inductive approach to content analysis was undertaken to identify the key themes. The study’s findings show illness and injury and the subsequent changes in occupational roles had a significant impact on participants’ masculine perceptions. Study participants experienced loss in many areas of their lives and described being occupied in recreating and renegotiating their masculinity in varying areas such as work, personal relationships and social activities. Further research, conducted within a New Zealand context, will be invaluable in validating the current findings in this area. The application of this knowledge is an area requiring extensive exploration and research. There is significant scope for healthcare professionals to gain understanding of men’s relationship to, and their self-perceptions of, masculinity and to utilise and incorporate these findings into therapeutic settings, therefore gaining more valuable outcomes for their clients.

Resumen
This thesis explores the British Commonwealth experience of occupation in Japan from 1945-1952. It draws on official and private records from the four participating British Commonwealth countries ??? Australia, Britain, India and New Zealand- to examine the complex relationship that developed between the occupying troops and the occupied Japanese population in the period between the cessation of hostilities and the formal ratification of a Peace Treaty. The thesis begins with an analysis of the preconceptions British Commonwealth troops brought with them to Japan, to establish the context for their cross-cultural encounter with Japan and the Japanese people. An understanding of the historical background enables the impressions formed by BCOF troops during the occupation to be presented not as random observations, but as part of a tradition of contact and cultural critique. The British Commonwealth experience in Japan was shaped by a number of external factors. Delays in moving to Japan weakened media and public interest in the force, eroded morale and precipitated a ???foreign force??? mentality. Once in Japan, the dominant US presence, the subordinate status of BCOF and the shortcomings of the isolated, rural area allocated to the force were a source of disappointment and frustration. But the difficulties attending British Commonwealth involvement in the occupation should not obscure the simultaneous development of a significant cultural encounter. The circumstances of the occupation created a particular dynamic between BCOF troops and Japanese civilians. The responsibilities and obligations that SCAP conferred on the British Commonwealth force invested BCOF personnel with authority over the Japanese. The disparity in power was reinforced by participation in occupation tasks that confirmed their status as occupiers. The occupation relationship was heavily influenced by the nature of personal interactions established between BCOF personnel and the Japanese people. Service in Japan provided opportunities for troops to reassess their views of the Japanese in the light of personal experience. For some, the cultural differences they observed only reinforced their sense of the ???otherness??? of the Japanese. For many others, the occupation provided a bridge between war and peace, as contact with Japanese people eased the intense hatreds generated during the war. For most British Commonwealth personnel, service with BCOF impacted in some way on the beliefs they held about Japan and the Japanese.

Resumen
This thesis looks at some aspects of the Italian home front during World War Two in the predominantly rural, northeastern province of Udine. It also examines the immediate aftermath of the war, the first few months of the Reconstruction period. The thesis quite deliberately devotes more attention to the early part of the war because, in the case of Italy, it is the least studied period of the conflict. The vast majority of the research that has been published on Italy in the Second World War has focused on the history of the Resistance 1943-45 and also, albeit to a somewhat lesser extent, the military aspects of the conflict. This thesis is also intended as a contribution to the history of the province of Udine itself. The thesis focuses on the question of the Fascist air defence organisations and air raid precautions in the province using local archival sources from the Comitato provinciale protezione antiaerea (1939-1950). It looks at how the local authorities protected non-combatants and what sort of war they expected Italy to wage. Most studies of aerial warfare have tended to focus on civil defence in industrial and port areas. Udine was a bombing target from 1943 onwards because it was a major hub for railway lines from Nazi Germany to central and southern Italy and was particularly hard and repeatedly hit during the last winter of the war. In addition, the PhD describes and analyses the brutality and violence during the period of the Italian Social Republic under German occupation. Much has been written about the German atrocities in Italy, but historians have been less interested in writing about the involvement of Italians in violence which was organised by Nazis, but perpetrated by locals.

Resumen
We consider a model for random loops on graphs which is inspired by the Feynman–Kac formula for the grand canonical partition function of an ideal gas. We associate to this model a corresponding occupation field, which is a positive random field detailing the total time spent by loops at each vertex. We argue that well known critical phenomena for the ideal gas can be reinterpreted in terms of random variables of this occupation field. We also argue that higher order correlations, such as the existence of off-diagonal long-range order, can only be seen in the occupation field by studying a modified space–time model of loops. We provide an isomorphism theorem for this model to a complex Gaussian field, and derive a version of Symanzik’s formula which describes the ideal gas interacting with a random background environment. Finally we consider the effect of interactions on the gas, and present a large deviations analysis of the cycle distribution of the loop model under two mean field Hamiltonians.

Resumen
The paper examines the extent to which the prestige value of a retiree’s former occupation increases the likelihood that they will make a transition into volunteering after retirement. Following social production function theory, we assume that when a person retires, the prestige value attached to their former occupation fades. The fact that volunteering has the character of a collective good provides the opportunity to gain social prestige to offset the loss of occupational prestige. However, the extent of the incentive to volunteer will be distributed unequally across occupations: the higher the former occupational prestige value, the higher the perceived loss of prestige after retirement. Thus, doing a job with high prestige value increases the incentive to volunteer in retirement. This assumption is tested, using data taken from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) 1992-2013. The sample contains 1,631 workers and 589 retirees, 278 of whom transitioned into volunteering during the observation window. Based on Kaplan-Meier-Failure-Estimates and complementary log-log hazard models, findings show a positive effect of occupational prestige on the transition into volunteering. Thus, the loss of high occupational prestige can be compensated by the social prestige associated with volunteering. Formal volunteering in retirement follows, albeit to a lesser extent, the logic of the occupational social strata.

Resumen
This thesis presents a comprehensive characterisation of the Palaeolithic occupation of the Thar Desert, which is located in western India and south-western Pakistan. This is achieved through a combination of extensive syntheses of existing palaeoenvironmental and archaeological evidence and the development of new, interdisciplinary evidence for Upper Pleistocene hominin occupation in the Thar Desert through surface survey and excavation. Patterns of environmental variability in the Thar Desert are described to identify when and where the Thar Desert may have been habitable to hominin populations. Evidence for over 900 Palaeolithic sites is synthesised to identify existing spatial, typological and chronological patterns in the Thar Desert. Typo-technological descriptions of new Palaeolithic assemblages are described, and placed within chronological and environmental contexts based upon associations with previously studied sediment formations. The results of chronological, environmental and archaeological analyses from a new excavated site, Katoati, are described, which presents a significant new benchmark for Palaeolithic studies, both for the Thar Desert and southern Asia. The excavated assemblages from Katoati indicate a Middle Palaeolithic occupation of the Thar Desert during episodes of enhanced humidity >91ka, and a further Middle Palaeolithic occupation 65-55ka. These Middle Palaeolithic assemblages indicate considerable cultural continuity and offer a chronometric framework for the results of the surface survey. The identification of a number of technologically and typologically distinct artefacts in both excavated and surface contexts indicate significant similarities with Middle Stone Age assemblages from Arabia and the Sahara and Middle Palaeolithic sites in South Asia. As a result, the Thar Desert can be identified as a pivotal location for investigating major changes in Upper Pleistocene hominin demography between Africa and across southern Asia.

Okinawa, Japan has a long history of struggle with Japan and the United States of America. Okinawa was annexed by the Japanese during the Shogunate, mistreated by Imperial Japan during World War II, destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa, and occupied by U.S. military. Okinawa hosts some of the largest U.S. military bases outside of the Continental United States. Since Okinawa has been occupied by the U.S. military since World War II, it also has a history of contentious politics and protests against the occupation. Okinawa’s economy and cultural identity within the domestic and international spheres with the U.S. military and the Government of Japan has shaped its political protest identities. The “Okinawan Struggle” has evolved and into a new form, but often seen as a long lasting and unified struggle. This thesis explores Okinawa’s different protest episodes during different governing administrations and different economic structures.

Resumen
While Palestine is one of the most contested areas of the world, this thesis argues that the complexities of Palestinian narratives are rarely fully heard. It documents how Palestinian university students narrate their lives under occupation for a foreign audience, arguing that motivations for participating in the research affected the narratives shared. Some argued that they were resisting the illegal Israeli occupation by taking part and sharing stories designed to encourage an international audience to oppose it. Others condemned foreign intervention and constructed Muslim resistance as essential for Palestinian liberation. The thesis shows how participants constructed place in the interviews in ways that strengthened the messages they sought to convey and it explores the precarity in their accounts of how they negotiate the threat of imprisonment and death at the hands of the Israeli army. It argues that participants drew on historical claims to Palestine to emphasise their belonging to the land and steadfastness in order to appeal for international support for their cause, or to explain their desire to ‘wipe out’ the State of Israel. The thesis examines the accounts of students who argue that the occupation is pushing young Palestinians to want to leave Palestine and those who said they wanted to leave. It argues that they underline the importance of ending the occupation. The empirical chapters conclude by exploring how the participants expressed their desires for the future, arguing that some pinned their hopes on international support, some drew hope from their religious beliefs, while others saw Palestinian activism as the only way to achieve their goals. The thesis concludes that the participants’ narratives of resistance were more important as a means of them ‘getting by’ and continuing to remain steadfast than they were an effective means of working towards bringing an end to the occupation.

This study enhances student acceptance of career investigation and contains extensive lesson plans for each day of the school year, plus one copy of each handout to be duplicated. The classroom is run as a business where students work for the instructor and are paid by check at the end of each week. Money is deposited on account and used to purchase course grades. The more money the student earns, the higher grade he can purchase. The findings show that students learn more about careers. Students became aware that the higher paying career fields required more schooling and/or training, resulting in changed attitudes about school. They were able to see how the relationship of the learning process could determine their future.

Resumen
Painting and space are two terms often spoken of concurrently in the critique of painting. Some of the ways that painting has investigated space on and off the picture plane is by developing a pictorial language that manipulates surface, form and matter. Over time investigations into what painting can be has developed a visual language that is able to dip in and out of paintings tradition while persistent investigations into space within painting has allowed individual practice to branch into three-dimensions and perhaps further. This enquiry begins with the Pre-Renaissance. This is an era within painting’s history that is heavily laden with Religious iconography and the beginnings of Western Perspectival painting. Yet some of the paintings of this era are still able to engage a viewer physically, mentally and emotionally even now, centuries later. Lucio Fontana’s claim that a spatial artwork is not reliant on form uncovers the notion that a spatial artwork should move freely through time and space. A focus on painting in its expanded field reveals how the manipulation of painting’s spatial constructs is instrumental in the pursuit of a “truly spatial” artwork. Painting’s expansion may have broadened its material and aesthetic possibilities, but at its core, painting has worked within its foundation as a practice that works with the tension between spatial reality and spatial illusion. Exploring this tension reveals how working within a system of contradictions can open a dialogue with the body that elicits affect and an artwork’s spatial possibilities. The accompanying creative work to this enquiry engages with the notion that painting inherently engages with space. By working within a dialogue of pictorial and material tensions.

History
M.L.A.
This thesis focuses on the interpretive possibilities of the tensions between slavery and the American Revolution that are present in cities that faced British occupation. The history of the occupation is an avenue to incorporate the history of black men and women alongside traditional narratives, which can compel visitors to apply lessons of the past to contemporary problems. By focusing on occupation, I propose that we can expand interpretations at historic sites where the history of the American Revolution is already interpreted for the public by centering on the stories of black men and women who had to decide between joining the British and escaping slavery or remaining enslaved. By surveying the current interpretation of the British occupation in the cities that were occupied, the current interpretation of slavery in these cities, and recent literature on best practices for the interpretation of slavery, this study makes a series of recommendations for Philadelphia’s small and large historic sites. By taking on the task of interpreting black lives during the occupation of the British, staff at such sites has the opportunity to expand its work to not only meaningfully expand African American history, but also expand our public understanding of the complicated meaning of liberty during the Revolution.

Spalding, Kaitlyn G. "Enhancing occupational performance using the 'LifeSkills' program: Evaluation of an occupation-based group in an inpatient rehabilitation setting". Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/410936.

Texto completo
Resumen
Occupational therapists working in inpatient rehabilitation settings support people post-injury and illness to engage in meaningful occupations to achieve success. A common practice approach is using occupation-based interventions, where engaging in occupations is used as the therapeutic agent of change. There is a strong incentive in the current Australian healthcare system to develop value-based rehabilitation interventions that better enable patient independence and recovery. A current trend to maximise patient outcomes is the use of group-based interventions to enhance frequency and intensity of practise. However, limited research exists to support occupational therapists wishing to incorporate an occupation-based intervention into this group approach. Therefore, further exploration of the use of occupation-based groups in inpatient rehabilitation settings is warranted. The objective of this thesis was to investigate occupation-based groups in inpatient rehabilitation practice. This was achieved through the following aims: (1) to examine and map the range of occupation-based group programs used in hospital rehabilitation; (2) to examine the impact of the LifeSkills group in improving and maintaining instrumental activities of daily living skills, as measured by the examiner and as perceived by the participant: a) immediately post-intervention, b) at a 30-day follow-up, and c) at a 90-day follow-up; (3) to examine differences in outcomes from the LifeSkills group based on age or diagnoses; and (4) to examine the LifeSkills group through a process evaluation to determine active components and mechanisms for success. Three studies were conducted to explore the thesis aims. First, a scoping review was conducted using a recognised framework to identify 10 articles on the current length and breadth of the literature landscape for occupation-based groups. Second, a longitudinal observational cohort study recruited 31 consecutive, eligible participants of the LifeSkills group; 21 female and 9 men aged 35-91 years with varying neurological (16) and non- neurological (15) conditions. Thirty patients agreed to participate with outcomes of performance, satisfaction, and self-efficacy measured over four data points. Third, a process evaluation study was conducted alongside the cohort study with the same participants. Using a process evaluation framework, quantitative administrative data, patient outcome measures, group observations and qualitative semi-structured interviews identified essential components and mechanisms for group success. Results from the scoping review showed that there was a paucity in the literature on the use of occupation-based groups which justified the longitudinal investigation into the use of this intervention, the impact on outcomes, and key implementation factors. These longitudinal outcomes demonstrated statistically and clinically significant positive changes. The process evaluation showed that whilst patient-related barriers of pain and fatigue were identified, three main factors of facilitating the shared experience, using patient-centred tasks to offer real-world experiences, and enabling regular and meaningful opportunities to practise, could be used to enable successful group implementation and patient outcomes. Findings from this body of research offer four contributions for clinical practice; (1) occupation-based groups can enable positive outcomes; (2) taking a personalised approach to outcome measurement provides a better understanding of change; (3) key success factors for occupation-based group implementation; and (4) how such groups can deliver the unique principles of occupation-based practice in a controlled environment. This thesis was driven by the clinical-based desire to find, develop and contribute the best available research to provide quality evidence for practice. The subsequent findings support the use of an occupation-based group approach to facilitate occupation-based practice and address occupational performance outcomes. This offers promising avenues for future research opportunities, particularly justifying larger, explanatory study designs to examine intervention effects and generalisability. In the meantime, rehabilitation clinicians are enabled to consider the impacts of such an approach on patient outcomes and presents justification for incorporating it into practice.

Artiklarna söktes i Luleå universitetsbibliotek databaser.
The purpose of the study is to provide an overview of the concept spirituality by summarizing and describing the state of scientific knowledge in occupational therapy research. As method the study was designed as a literature review. The study included 12 scientific articles that were both qualitative and theoretical. Articles were searched in databases of library in Luleå University of Technology. In addition a manual search was conducted. The results show four major categories with subcategories. The main categories were: Spirituality gives meaning and purpose, Spirituality gives support and assistance, Spirituality as a force to activities and Spirituality as a foundation to emotions. The result shows that spirituality interacts with both the inner feeling within a human being and the external performance of an activity. Spirituality is important regardless of whether a belief system exists or not. The conclusion of the study shows that spirituality is important for humans. It is important to involve spirituality in a client meeting for the occupational therapists because spirituality is an important part of holism and humanism and separately is fundamental ideals for occupational.

Resumen
This dissertation is an attempt to explain the general principles behind the Palestinian political discourse that followed An-Nakba in 1948. This analysis will be carried out in three parts: the First Part starts with an introduction that lays out the questions, objectives and structure of this research before delving into the theoretical and analytical frameworks that guide the last two chronological parts of the dissertation. The Second Part focuses on the Palestinian political discourse between 1948 and the late 1980s. The Third Part examines the period that followed from the 1990s onward. While trying to distill discursive orienting-principles, the analysis will display how the discursive transformations evolved and it asks about their performative corollaries in everyday life, whether at the ideational or the spatial level. In addressing this question, this dissertation made two interdependent original contributions: the main contribution uncovers the main rules of formations and logics of the Palestinian representative discourse. That explains also the internal transformation and evolution of this discourse, and how these logics directed policymaking. In general, I attempted to summarize the Palestinian discursive rules of formation into eleven overlapping rules: (1) an-Nakba and the order of discontinuity, (2) an-Nakba and the pursuit of a solution, (3) provisional horizon, socialization and referentiality, (4) motion, (5) logic of division, (6) statehood, (7) realist-liberalist peace, (8) mathematico-judicial schema, (9) market logic, (10) security as peace, and (11) replacement. The second contribution is a byproduct of exploring the philosophical debates that I touched upon in order to build a methodological framework that helps us understand the connection between change and discourse.

Resumen
The Allied Occupation of Germany, 1945-49, was intended to transform the war-torn Third Reich into a peaceable nation through a series of far-reaching political, economic, and social reforms. But amid the growing tensions between East and West these radical plans would be significantly altered, culminating in the formation of two German states in 1949. Historians have tended to view the occupation as a backdrop to the nascent Cold War or a transitional period in the history of modern Germany. Yet this thesis suggests that British participation in the Allied occupation was, in fact, much more than simply an exercise in political pragmatism or a contribution to the rebuilding of war-torn Europe. Rather, this undertaking catalysed Britain's political and public confrontation with Nazism, laying some of the most significant and durable foundations of the postwar Anglo-German relationship. This research utilises contemporary mass media sources and official records to explore British images and perceptions of Germany under occupation, scrutinising the interactions of decision-makers, the media, and the public. It begins with an examination of the pervasive culture war that emerged in wartime Britain over the precise interpretation and resolution of the so-called 'German problem'. The thesis then goes on to consider public portrayals of the occupation vis-à-vis the evolution of official policy, beginning in the summer of 1945 when British policymakers responded to popular demands for a 'hard peace' and approved a rigorous programme of denazification, re-education, and demilitarisation. In the coming years, scandals engulfed the public image of the British occupiers, threatening to undermine Britain's claims on 'winning the peace' and even prompting an official public relations campaign. The mass market press led calls for an abrupt end to the occupation, fearing it was undermining the nation's prestige while failing to adequately address the threat still posed by Germany. At around the same time, Britain's political and military leaders reassessed their position in the face of the Cold War, turning towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of western Germany. By 1949, a clear dichotomy had emerged, with implications reaching far beyond the immediate postwar period: while anxieties over the 'German problem' remained largely intact amongst substantial sections of the British press and public, with many regarding the occupation as an abject failure, policymakers were firmly set on the path towards Anglo-German reconciliation and alliance.

The title "Exodus alludes to a restricted exclave encircled by a forbidding wall -- effect, a prison on the scale of a metropolis, and one in which people sought refuge voluntarily. Over the past forty years, similar walls have grown in the city of Belfast in an increasing effort to divide its Catholic and Protestant populations. Although the troubles have subsided, the walls continue to grow creating interface zones along their edges, where civic infrastructure becomes abandoned and left to ruin. Such zones become the stage for a new urban culture invigorated by invention and subversion, each with an objective of territorial gain through a type of architectural warfare that stakes its claim on the conterminous ruins along its edge. The result is manifested in adaptive architectural typologies that reinforce the edge condition of the wall through the re-appropriation of critical infrastructure, forced to confront its intersection with barrier lines.

This thesis deals with the life of metallurgical factories during world war ii. I limited my investigation to the saint-denis area as it is the most important town in the seine department. I delineated two directions of study, on the one hand, defining the specificity of the period on which french and german joint supervision left their imprint and, on the other hand, trying to assess the adaptability of the factories which had to deal with the shock of falling under that rule. My field of investigation includes metallurgy in the broadest sense of the term (ranging from equipment repair plants to heavy metallurgy via electrical construction) because of the prominent role it played in the german war economy and because it involves a large section of the working class of the Paris suburbs. My analysis of industrial, commercial and financial changes is based on the study of balance sheets and boards of director's reports. The study of the labor force is based on archives which, up to this point have been either scarcely examined or have remained untouched. By processing the data from 4 000 of the ccm sulzer workers' wage files, i was able to assess not only staff management policies and changes in the labor market situation but also the reactions of sulzer employees when confronted with requisitions, frozen wages and rationning. The war situation weighed heavily on the various companies, upsetting previously established situations, their sense of security and defined new labor relations. However, elements of continuity prevailed, if only in the short term and the war situation did not bring a reduction of the area's industrial network. Management, whether at local or regional level was
