Resumen
Modern American nursing has an extensive ethical heritage literature that extends from the 1870s to 1965 when the American Nurses Association issued a policy paper that called for moving nursing education out of hospital diploma programs and into colleges and universities. One consequence of this move was the dispersion of nursing libraries and the loss of nursing ethics textbooks, as they were largely not brought over into the college libraries. In addition to approximately 100 nursing ethics textbooks, the nursing ethics heritage literature also includes hundreds of journal articles that are often made less accessible in modern databases that concentrate on the past 20 or 30 years. A second consequence of nursing’s movement into colleges and universities is that ethics was no longer taught by nursing faculty, but becomes separated and placed as a discrete ethics (later bioethics) course in departments of philosophy or theology. These courses were medically identified and rarely incorporated authentic nursing content. This shift in nursing education occurs contemporaneously with the rise of the field of bioethics. Bioethics is rapidly embraced by nursing, and as it develops within nursing, it fails to incorporate the rich ethical heritage, history, and literature of nursing prior to the development of the field of bioethics. This creates a radical disjunction in nursing’s ethics; a failure to more adequately explore the moral identity of nursing; the development of an ethics with a lack of fit with nursing’s ethical history, literature, and theory; a neglect of nursing’s ideal of service; a diminution of the scope and richness of nursing ethics as social ethics; and a loss of nursing ethical heritage of social justice activism and education. We must reclaim nursing’s rich and capacious ethics heritage literature; the history of nursing ethics matters profoundly.

Resumen
The study describes the founding and growth of professional nursing at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, from the program's initial planning in 1972 to 1992. The review of literature traces the historical development of professional nursing education schools in the United States from early 1800 training schools to teaching advanced nursing technology in 1992. A chronological approach involving both primary and secondary sources will be used to identify educational and developmental changes in administration, facilities, faculty positions and qualifications, curriculum, policies related to students and graduates, accreditation by the state of Indiana and the National League for Nursing, and the impact of religious-based program on student graduates. The historical research study will show the development of professional nursing education at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. The development of the baccalaureate degree curriculum was facilitated by its founders with a goal to enable the school to meet accreditation requirements. The findings indicated that professional nursing education at Marion College/Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, followed the average trend in the development of a baccalaureate of science degree in nursing in the United States. A strength was Marion College/Indiana Wesleyan University developed a nursing program that had a strong Christian, multicultural foundation. This theme was interwoven throughout the curriculum, the uniqueness of the program lay in its development when compared to other nursing programs in Indiana and across the nation. The nursing directors and faculty members contributed to the quality of the education that was offered to nursing students. The nursing program expanded in 1981, and a graduate program in community health nursing was offered.

Jolley, Michael Jeremy. "A social history of paediatric nursing 1920-1970". Thesis, University of Hull, 2003. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5796.

Texto completo
Resumen
This is a study concerning the social history of paediatric nursing between 1920 and 1970. Oral history data was collected from past nurses of children and from people who had been in hospital as children within the period in question. The study explores the professional orientation of nurses and their role within the micro-culture of the acute hospital, their relationship with doctors on the one hand and with the child and family on the other. It is found that until the later years of the period 1920-1970, paediatric nursing was a regimented discipline, whose professional identity was intimately associated with that of medicine and with notions of 'science' and 'professionalism'. In practice, 'science' meant practicing the 'known way' as described in the literature of the time and which had been passed down by word of mouth and which could not be exposed to critique or review. 'Professionalism' meant being respectful and obedient to senior nurses and to doctors. This created a situation where nursing could not initiate change and as a result, failed to provide social and psychological care appropriate to the child and family. Nursing failed to question and develop its own practice and what changes did take place were the result of other agencies' manipulation of nursing for their own ends. The nurse participants express a strong sense of value for their work history and are proud of what they achieved. Nursing is seen as a demanding and challenging occupation, to which the system of discipline and hierarchy presented most of the challenges. Nursing was an emotionally rewarding area of work, the nurse participants obtaining most satisfaction from being able to 'nurse the child better'. Nurses cared about the children but failed to realise that the emotional neutrality associated with their professionalism was interpreted by the children as a lack of affection. It is found that the child participants tended to be traumatised by their hospital experiences. The cause of this trauma is found to be the way in which nurses practiced according to a scientific and professional paradigm. Unwittingly, this last resulted in the nurses being perceived by the child participants as lacking in affection or emotional 'care' for them as children. Many of the participants remain confused and troubled by this aspect of their experience. By the end of the period 1920-1970 the system of discipline and hierarchy was being disassembled and nursing began to evaluate itself and subject itself to scientific scrutiny. At the same time, paediatric nursing did change to become more child and family orientated and it began to present a more 'human' face to the child patients and their families. These changes are identified with broader changes in society to which paediatric nursing did eventually become aligned.

Resumen
The purpose of this dissertation is to research aspects of the historical development of Nursing Education and Nursing Management at the Carinus Nursing College from 1949 to 1987; to determine and explain how the College has adapted and coped with historical change and to determine whether proposals for the future can be made. Research has been done by applying the general systems theory and by using the standard methods of historical analysis. Data has been collected by means of oral history, literature search and documentation. The variables isolated are the College as a system; the government or influential super systems; resources such as financial, personnel and students and material inputs; and throughput or processing the work in the output, which leads to the professional nurse. The models used are Bucheles' organizational system, Sharma's flow chart pattern, Mintzberg's parts of organizational systems, and power flows and as shown in Emery, Feibleman and Friends relations and rules of interaction in systems thinking. Parsons' "imperatives of maintenance of a system" as well as Alvin Toffler's "second and third wave phenomena as responses to change" were two further models that were used. By using Robert Buchele's model, the work is divided into four parts: - i) the College as a system ii) the super systems iii) the resources iv) the throughput or processing. A further design that emerged was that two eras could be distinguished, within which three historical phases: - Early, Middle and Late are developed.

Resumen
Little has been written about nursing in the period 1870-1960 within the geographical boundaries and surrounding areas of Halifax and Huddersfield. This thesis aims to explore the development of nursing within these towns. The focus is on general nurses in hospital and community roles. Rosenberg’s eight areas of importance were used allowing the construction of an historical analysis of both nursing and nurses locally. Archival sources were found in twenty-five main archives and twelve of these were investigated further. Primary documents belonging to local retired nurses such as personal documents, photographs and memorabilia were included. In total 1493 individual items were subjected to documentary analysis. The second stage of data collection involved conducting oral history interviews to capture memories and experiences of local retired nurses. A total of 373 named nurses were identified, sixty-eight contacted, forty-four agreed to participate and twenty-one were interviewed. A life story approach recorded their personal lives and nursing careers. This approach required the ethical issues of biographical research methods and interviewing to be addressed. Interviews were recorded on audio tape and transcribed ready to be deposited in the University of Huddersfield archives. Data was subjected to analysis using NVivo computer software and Rosenberg’s eight areas of importance used as a priori themes. Nursing in these two provincial towns changed during the ninety years under study often in response to local or national issues such as professional registration. Nurse education occurred in all but the early years and developed alongside the increasing specialization of nurses and as each nursing branch emerged. Nurses in West Yorkshire were subject to particular local issues such as its geography, environment and industrial heritage. The merits of this research are it provides a unique account of the local development of nursing adding to the professions history and presenting implications for present day practice.

Roberts, Erica. "Developing gerontological nursing in British Columbia : an oral history study". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/5116.

Texto completo
Resumen
The population of older adults has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to continue to grow into the middle of this century. The aging of the population means that nurses need to have specialized gerontological knowledge in order to properly care for older adults. In spite of the current need for specialists in this field, gerontological nursing is not a popular choice and nurses often lack adequate preparation to care for older adults. The complex reasons behind these issues are rooted in the history of the development of this specialty. This study takes a historical look at the development of gerontological nursing in British Columbia through the stories of seven nurse educators who were leaders and innovators in their field. The findings of the study tell a story of the nurses’ work to change unacceptable nursing practice, improve standards of care and professional status of gerontological nursing and advocate for older adults. In doing so, these nurses challenged cultural values about aging and care of older adults and worked toward giving gerontological nurses a voice in policy and decision-making. The findings from this study can be used to guide today’s gerontological nurses as they continue to develop this specialized field of nursing knowledge.

Resumen
1 BackgroundBased on the current structural shortage of labor force and serious shortage of caregivers in China's elderly and medical services [1], the future demand for elderly care services for the elderly population is also increasingly strong [2]. At present, the proportion of Chinese elderly people living in elderly care institutions is 0.73%, which reflects that there are still some obstacles to the general acceptance of elderly care institutions by Chinese elderly people. Combined with the theory of environmental psychology, it can be seen that the environment can have an impact on behavior, psychology and other aspects, so the scientific shaping of space is inextricably linked to the enhancement of the user's spatial acceptance. Based on this, this study discusses the development history, development status and future development trend of nursing home design in China, and explores the innovative development path of nursing home design in the future. It aims to improve the acceptance and willingness to use nursing homes by the elderly and their families through optimization at the design level, so as to alleviate the current aging problem in China and the world.2 MethodDesign form language, is a kind of abstract language that can cover the design concept, design strategy, is a logical combination of structure, color, material and other figurative language in design. The change of design form language is often closely related to the change of user needs, the development of the industry now, etc. Citespace can present the structure of knowledge, the situation of information in the form of graphical distribution [3], and combined with the resulting graphs to analyze the disciplinary structure of the field of study related to the discipline structure, the hot frontier and other laws [4]. In view of the fact that the keyword maps that can be directly generated by importing literature data in Citespace cannot accurately represent the design form language explored in this study, this study organizes the design form language of each piece of literature in the valid title data for the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the 253 pieces of literature in the CNKI database, respectively.3 ResultThis study combines the data processing results of the design form language to produce three results related to the development of nursing home design in China. First, the development history of nursing home design in China is divided into three stages: the "starting period", the "high speed development period" and the "innovation enlightenment period", and there is still much room for development. Secondly, from the current development status of Chinese nursing home design, the concentration of current research is high, which also proves that the innovation of Chinese nursing home design is low at this stage. In addition, the research hotspots are mainly "people-oriented" and "integration of medical and nursing care", which reflects the current Chinese nursing home design's emphasis on the physiological and psychological needs of the elderly, and conforms to the current Chinese government's guidelines for nursing homes. Thirdly, "multi-dimensional consideration of user needs", "optimization of nursing home living mode through spatial design", and "exploration of cutting-edge fields" are proposed, The four suggestions on the direction of future development of nursing home design in China are "multi-dimensional consideration of users' needs", "optimization of living mode through spatial design", "exploration of frontier fields", and "in-depth combination of theory and practice".4 ConclusionThis study applies Citespace to analyze the literature about design form language visualization mapping in the field of Chinese nursing home design in the past 15 years, and according to the changing law of design form language, we have launched a study on the development history, development status, and future development trend of China's nursing home design, and obtained four directions of the future of China's nursing home design that are worth developing and studying in depth, which provides a directional guideline for the research of China's nursing home design.References[1] Zuo Meiyun. Resumen
This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, of the case study type. The information contained in this chapter was obtained by reviewing the medical records, interviewing the patient and talking to medical and nursing professionals at the Hospital de Emergência e Trauma Dom Luiz Gonzaga Fernandes, located in Campina Grande, Paraíba. The patient L. S. F., female, 3 years old, born in Areial - PB, arrived at the Hospital presenting a convulsive crisis that lasted for 15 days, having a history of headache, vomiting, intermittent fever for more than 1 year. Upon admission, a CT scan of the head was performed, which showed an expansive lesion with signs of bleeding, with acute hydrocephalus. Upon hospitalization through the Systematization of Nursing Assistance (SAE), it was possible to diagnose her with anxiety, and for that, a prescription was made with the interventions of administering analgesics, observing vital signs and keeping the bed rails high, due to young age. Subsequently, after being assisted by the neurosurgeon, he concluded that the tumor was a Thalamo-Mesencephalic, requiring a surgical procedure, which subsequently was performed uneventfully. The patient's brain tumor was taken for biopsy, for the opinion, and whether it is benign or malignant, the child will start chemotherapy, radiotherapy and similar treatment. The case reported and publications raised bring to light the discussion of the role of nursing in a complex situation such as the diagnosis of a brain tumor accompanied by hydrocephalus. It also ratifies the importance of the multidisciplinary team in this service, in which medical, nursing, psychology and physiotherapy teams must “walk” together, aiming at the well-being of the patient and his family.

Resumen
As the first round of baby boomers turn 65 in 2011, we must be prepared for the largest demographic group in history that could need long term care from nursing homes and home health providers. The development of socially assistive robots for health care applications can provide measurable improvements in patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiencies by playing an increasingly important role in patient care in the fast pace of crowded clinics, hospitals and nursing/veterans homes. However, there are a number of research issues that need to be addressed in order to design such robots. In this paper, we address one of the main limitations to the development of intelligent socially assistive robots for health care applications: Robotic control architecture design and implementation with explicit social and assistive task functionalities. In particular, we present the design of a unique learning-based multi-layer decision making control architecture for utilization in determining the appropriate behavior of the robot. Herein, we explore and compare two different learning-based techniques that can be utilized as the main decision-making module of the controller. Preliminary experiments presented show the potential of the integration of the aforementioned techniques into the overall design of such robots intended for assistive scenarios.

Resumen
Aortic dissection is a rare medical condition in which a tear of the aortic wall occurs. Type B aortic dissection occurs in the descending aorta and is a challenging medical emergency in the human circulatory system and may have serious complications such as renal failure, arterial dilatation or rupture, visceral branch hypo perfusion, and compromise of aneurism exclusion. Elderly patients greater than the age of 70 years with type B aortic dissection have the most striking mortality rate. A seventy-year-old woman with a history of acute aortic aneurysm began her illness with sudden onset generalized abdominal pain and back pain, vomiting, and loose stool and was admitted to the hospital. After careful analysis of the results of diagnostic tests, the patient was diagnosed with type B aortic dissection with kidney failure. Criteria to manage this patient with type B aortic dissection included reducing blood pressure on the aortic walls, relieving pain, and helping prevent tears from worsening. Nursing care provided for this patient included psychological support, close observation of vital signs and other discomforts to identify the signs of complications, administration of IV morphine infusion for relieving pain with the close observation, administration of medicine, and maintaining intake output of the patient to reduce blood pressure and prevent worsening of vascular and renal complications. All recommended management was continued but suddenly, the patient became unconscious and had a cardiac arrest. Even though maximal resuscitation efforts were taken, the patient died.

Resumen
ABSTRACT Background: Stunting is a chronic nutritional issue with height or age indicator and Z score less than -2 SD. In order not to cause problems, WHO (World Health Organization) recommends a stunting target of less than 20%. Nganjuk Regency is a district with a stunting prevalence of over 20%. Stunting is related to the postnatal incidence that children under 5 experience. This study had the purpose of determining the effect of postnatal factors on the incidence of stunting in Nganjuk Regency, East Java. Subjects and Method: A case control was conducted in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, from May 15 to June 15, 2020. A sample of 450 children under five was selected using fixed sampling of disease, including 150 stunted children (case) and 300 normal children (control). The dependent variable was stunting. The independent variables were birth length, breastfeeding, and history of infectious diseases. The data were collected by questionnaires and analysed by a multiple logistic regression. Results: Stunting increased with short birth length (OR= 3.14; 95% CI= 2.42 to 3.86; p< 0.0001), no exclusive breastfeeding (OR= 2.31; 95% CI= 1.69 to 2.93; p< 0.001), and infectious disease history (OR= 2.26; 95% CI= 1.61 to 2.91; p< 0.001). Conclusion: Stunting increases with short birth length, no exclusive breastfeeding, and infectious disease history. Keyword: stunting, birth length, breastfeeding, history of infectious disease Correspondence: Risa Nurhayati. Study Program of Nursing Education, School of Sciences Satria Bhakti, Nganjuk, East Java. Resumen
Review question / Objective: To review the parameters for nursing assessment according to the human life cycle evidenced in the scientific literature? Condition being studied: Nursing assessment is one of the steps of the nursing process (NP), it consists of obtaining data that allows knowing the health status of a person and focusing the attention on the identified needs, guaranteeing the effectiveness and safety of care. According to the literature, there are different assessment approaches from nursing, which require an understanding for their use that is rarely developed, the above caused by various difficulties such as lack of time, problems at the level of knowledge, no interest, clarity in the parameters, among others, leading nursing professionals to lean towards the biomedical model due to its traditional use throughout history, which results in an apparent affinity. To deal with this situation, it is intended to determine by means of a scoping review, the assessment parameters applied in nursing according to the stages of the human life cycle, in order to contribute to the understanding of this component and make visible its importance within the disciplinary development.
