Resumen
Adaptive damping systems based on magnetorheological (MR) fluids allow the continuous control of vibration damping forces depending on the current conditions. In magnetorheological dampers known so far, the magnetic field for the control of the MR fluid is generated by the coil of an electromagnet. Two novel concepts for the magnetic circuit in magnetorheological dampers have been proven where hybrid magnetic circuits consisting of at least one permanent or hard magnet and an electromagnet are used. In the first concept, the electromagnet is combined with two permanent magnets, whose magnetization cannot be modified even by strong magnetic fields of the electromagnet. The main advantage of this configuration is the improved fail-safe behaviour of the damper in case of a power failure. In the second approach, the electromagnet is combined with a hard magnet, whose magnetization can be modified by the electromagnet. This configuration leads to high energy efficiency, because electric power is only required in short pulses for the switching of the hard magnet. Magnetic circuits with the combination of different magnetic field sources were designed supported by simulations of the magnetic flux distribution. Demonstration models for magnetorheological dampers with the distinguished magnetic circuits were constructed and their performances were tested. The results of the investigations are described in this contribution.

Resumen
Preparation and properties of a novel photocatalytic system containing magnetic cores coated with subsequently applied silica and titania shells are discussed. The underlying idea is to impart magnetic properties to the semiconductor particles that permits to control the rheological properties of the photocatalyst dispersion and makes possible its separation from treated solution without invoking procedures of filtration or centrifugation. Preparation route yielding photoactive titania coating and silica interlayer, which prevents the undesirable doping of catalyst and parasitic charge exchange between titania shell and magnetic core, is described in detail.

Resumen
Modern agricultural activities and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are two of the major sources of groundwater contamination that affect the quality of drinking water. Conventional water quality improvement methods include direct filtration, coagulation/settling treatment techniques, membrane-based systems, and absorption-based systems. However, to date, there are no efficient and cost-effective processes available for water treatment. This study developed an innovative nanotechnology-based technique to improve groundwater quality. Magnetic nanosponges (MNSs) were synthesized and characterized using two different magnetic nanoparticles along with polymeric coagulants. The efficiency of MNSs in removing pollutants in wastewater collected from local diary and swine CAFO lagoons was investigated. Standard water quality evaluation parameters, such as the total organic content (TOC), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), and biological oxygen demand (BOD), were measured prior to and after treatment with MNSs. The results demonstrate the potential of MNSs to improve the quality of groundwater and support the development of a cost-effective best management practice (BMP) that also employs traditional coagulants at CAFOs and other wastewater treatment plants.

The SCMNPs@BPy-SO3H catalyst was prepared and characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Afterwards, its capability was efficiently used to promote the one-pot, three-component synthesis of pyrano[2,3-c]pyrazole and 2-amino-3-cyano-pyrano[3,2-c]chromen-5(4H)-one derivatives. The strategy resulted in the desired products with excellent yields and short reaction times. The SCMNPs@BPy-SO3H catalyst was readily recovered using a permanent magnetic field and it was reused in six runs with a slight decrease in catalytic activity. Copyright © 2020 BCREC Group. Resumen
In the quest for novel rare earth (RE)-free magnetic materials, which also exhibit other additional properties such as good corrosion resistance and potential to operate at higher temperatures, an alloy deriving from the binary FePt system, with Mo and B addition, has been synthesized for the first time, using the out-of-equilibrium method of rapid solidification form the melt. The alloy with the composition Fe49Pt26Mo2B23 has been subjected to thermal analysis through differential scanning calorimetry in order to detect the structural disorder – order phase transformation as well as to study the crystallization processes. For the stabilization of the formed hard magnetic phase, the sample has been annealed at 600 °C and further structurally and magnetically characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry as well as magnetometry experiments. It has been proven that after annealing at 600 °C the tetragonal hard magnetic L10 phase emerges via crystallization from a disordered cubic precursor and becomes the predominant phase in terms of relative abundance. Moreover, it has been revealed by quantitative analysis via Mössbauer spectroscopy that the annealed sample exhibits a complex phase structure, where the L10 hard magnetic phase is accompanied by few other soft magnetic phases, in minority abundance: the cubic A1, orthorhombic Fe2B and residual intergranular region. The magnetic parameters have been derived from 300 K hysteresis loops. It was shown that, contrary to the as-cast sample which behaves as a typical soft magnet, the annealed sample presents strong coercivity and high remanent magnetization, accompanied by a large saturation magnetization. These findings offers good insight into the potential developing of novel class of RE-free permanent magnets, based on Fe-Pt-Mo-B, where the magnetic performance emerges from the co-existence of hard and soft magnetic phases in controlled and tunable proportions, capable of finding good applicability in fields requiring good catalytic properties and strong corrosion resistance.

Resumen
We review recent theoretical progress in our understanding of electron-driven novel magnetic phases on frustrated lattices. Our specific focus is on Kondo-lattice or double-exchange models assuming finite magnetic moments localized at the lattice sites. A salient feature of systems with SU(2) symmetric local moments is the emergence of noncoplanar magnetic ordering driven by the conduction electrons. The complex spin textures then endow the electrons a nontrivial Berry phase, often giving rise to a topologically nontrivial electronic state. The second part of the review is devoted to the discussion of metallic spin ice systems, which are essentially frustrated Ising magnets with local spin ordering governed by the so-called ice rules. These rules are similar to those that describe proton configurations in solid water ice, hence the name "spin ice". The nontrivial spin correlations in the ice phase give rise to unusual electron transport properties in metallic spin-ice systems.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to design, fabricate and control a novel Linear Magnetic Actuator (LMA) for applications such as active magnetic bearing systems to deal with vibration problems in rotating machines. This LMA actuator contains a moving body named ‘mover’ and three driving parts to drive the mover. Firstly, experiments have been conducted on the LMA to derive its mathematical model in order to investigate the generated electro-magnetic force as well as further research. The modeling result in a comparison with the actual system performance show that the electro-magnetic force varied symmetrically with the mover motion defined by the applied current. Secondly, an advanced trajectory controller named online tuning fuzzy PID controller has been designed for the LMA to improve the working performance. Finally, real-time experiments have been carried out to evaluate the tracking performance of the designed LMA control system. The results prove that the LMA driven by the proposed controller could track the desired trajectories with high accuracy.

Resumen
The emergence of unexpected properties in two-dimensional materials, interfaces, and nanostructured materials opens an exciting framework for exploring new devices and applications. Recent advances in materials design and the nano structurization of novel, low-dimensional materials, surfaces, and interfaces offer a novel playground to design efficient multifunctional materials-based devices. Low-dimensional materials exhibit peculiarities in their electronic, magnetic, and optical properties, changing with respect to the bulk when they are layered down to a single layer, in addition to their high tunability. Their crystal structure and chemical bonds lead to inherent unique mechanical properties. The fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures by stacking materials with different properties, the better control of interfaces, and the tunability of the physical properties by mechanical strain, and chemical and electronic doping allow for the exploration of multifunctional devices with superconducting, magnetic, and optical properties and unprecedented degrees of freedom in terms of fabrication and tunability.

Resumen
We report a novel three-axial magnetic-piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) magnetic field sensor. The sensor mainly consists of two sensing elements. Each of the sensing elements consists of a magnetic Ni thick film, a Pt/Ti top electrode, a piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin film, a Pt/Ti bottom electrode, a SiO2 insulation layer, and a moveable Si MEMS diaphragm. When the sensor is subjected to an AC magnetic field oscillating at 7.5 kHz, a magnetic force interaction between the magnetic field and Ni thick film is produced. Subsequently, the force deforms and deflects the diaphragms as well as the PZT thin film deposited on the diaphragms. The deformation and deflection produce corresponding voltage outputs due to the piezoelectric effect. By analyzing the voltage outputs through our criterion, we can obtain details of the unknown magnetic fields to which the sensor is subjected. This achieves sensing of three-axial magnetic fields. The experimental results show that the sensor is able to sense three-axial magnetic fields ranging from 1 to 20 Oe, with X-axial, Y-axial, and Z-axial sensitivities of 0.156 mVrms/Oe, 0.156 mVrms/Oe, and 0.035 mVrms/Oe, respectively, for sensing element A and 0.033 mVrms/Oe, 0.044 mVrms/Oe, and 0.130 mVrms/Oe, respectively, for sensing element B.

Resumen
A novel, moving‐source, ground electromagnetic system has been developed. The system, named the “Genie,” has been in routine field use since 1982. The system is based on measurement of the ratio of magnetic field amplitude at two widely separated frequencies. The design is presented and compared with traditional horizontal loop electromagnetic (HLEM) systems. Field survey results show the system is effective in detecting conductors at shallow to intermediate depths in resistive environments. The system is shown to be roughly equivalent in many aspects to conventional HLEM systems with important advantages in areas of moderate to rough terrain.

Professor Hidekazu Tanaka is based at the Department of Physics at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, where he is collaborating with a team of researchers to investigate magnetic quantum phenomena focusing on quantum phase transitions. Tanaka and his team have set about creating something they call a 'quantum magnetic excitation', which is essentially an elementary excitation that can be used on a quantum scale to explain how the quantum effect and multiple spins interact with one another. Their ultimate aim is to discover novel magnetic phenomena that occur at these scales and elucidate the mechanisms involved.

Resumen
Iron oxide nanoparticles are the basic components of the most promising magneto-responsive systems for nanomedicine, ranging from drug delivery and imaging to hyperthermia cancer treatment, as well as to rapid point-of-care diagnostic systems with magnetic nanoparticles. Advanced synthesis procedures of single- and multi-core iron-oxide nanoparticles with high magnetic moment and well-defined size and shape, being designed to simultaneously fulfill multiple biomedical functionalities, have been thoroughly evaluated. The review summarizes recent results in manufacturing novel magnetic nanoparticle systems, as well as the use of proper characterization methods that are relevant to the magneto-responsive nature, size range, surface chemistry, structuring behavior, and exploitation conditions of magnetic nanosystems. These refer to particle size, size distribution and aggregation characteristics, zeta potential/surface charge, surface coating, functionalization and catalytic activity, morphology (shape, surface area, surface topology, crystallinity), solubility and stability (e.g., solubility in biological fluids, stability on storage), as well as to DC and AC magnetic properties, particle agglomerates formation, and flow behavior under applied magnetic field (magnetorheology).

Resumen
There is a well-known description of a massless particle with spin in four dimensions in terms of position and momentum operators. The charge-monopole system can be obtained therefrom by a simple canonical transformation and a suitable choice of the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we generalize this description of a massless spinning particle to higher dimensions and then use the aforementioned transformation to define novel charge-monopole systems which are non-Abelian generalizations of the Abelian system of Dirac. The Lagrangian description of all these systems and their canonical quantization are also discussed. The analysis reveals the existence of symplectic structures which are likely to be original in the context of particle physics and which incidentally are capable of generalization to string theories. It further gives rise to new monopole fields which may be of use in the context of dimensional compactification.

Resumen
The rare-earth metals have high magnetic moments and a diverse range of magnetic structures. However, due to the inner-transition nature of lanthanide elements, the valence f orbitals of their trivalent cations usually do not mix substantially with the ligands' orbitals in the chemical compounds. The majority of lanthanide compounds is thus characterized by a rather ionic metal–ligand bonding and is hosting only weak crystal field effects. Several exceptions known encompass the valence fluctuation systems consisting of Sm, Ey, Tm or Yb combined with less electronegative nonmetal ligands (Si, S, Se, B etc.) or metals (Murani 2003 and references therein). This important class of lanthanide compounds for which crystal field effects are strong includes the classical systems: Yb3Si5 (Iandelli et al., 1979), YbB12 (Altshuler et al., 1998), and Yb3H8 (Drulis et al., 1999) . Even elemental Yb and Eu metals show valence transition at elevated pressure from di- to trivalent (Takemura & Syassen, 1985). These valence fluctuations are typically accompanied by electric resistivity changes: Ln(2+) → Ln(3+) + e–. Lanthanide borohydrides, Ln(BH4)3, constitute a rather poorly explored and novel group of compounds (Olsen et al., 2014). They are conveniently prepared via mechanochemical synthesis approach (high-energy milling). Quasi-ternary alkali metal-lanthanide borohydrides, MLn(BH4)4, are also available using this synthetic procedure (Wegner et al., 2013 [1] & Wegner et al., 2014 [2]). Here we explore for the first time the magnetic properties of Ln(BH4)3 and MLn(BH4)4 compounds, with particular emphasis on the thermally unstable systems (Ln= Sm, Yb and Eu) as contrasted with the reference case of much more thermally stable derivatives of ordinary lanthanides (Ln = Ho). We show that remarkably strong mixing of Ln(4f) and H(1s) states which causes thermal instability: Ln(3+) + BH4–→ Ln(2+) + BH4· leads in some cases to strong magnetic superexchange interactions between Ln(3+) centers [3].

Resumen
A novel active biocatalytic reaction system is proposed by covalently immobilizing porcine pancreas trypsin within the thermoresponsive polymer shell of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Active ester-functional nanocarriers suitable for the immobilization of amino functional targets are obtained in a single polymerization step by grafting-from copolymerization of an active ester monomer from superparamagnetic cores. The comonomer, oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate, has excellent water solubility at room temperature, biocompatibility, and a tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water. The phase separation can alternatively be initiated by magnetic heating caused by magnetic losses in ac magnetic fields. The immobilization of porcine pancreas trypsin to the core–shell nanoparticles results in highly active, nanoparticulate biocatalysts that can easily be separated magnetically. The enzymatic activity of the obtained biocatalyst system can be influenced by outer stimuli, such as temperature and external magnetic fields, by utilizing the LCST of the copolymer shell.

Resumen
Recently, magnetic fluid deformable mirrors (MFDMs) were proposed as a novel type of wavefront correctors for adaptice optics (AO) systems, which offer cost and performance advantages over existing wavefront correctors. These mirrors are developed by coating the free surface of a magnetic fluid with a thin reflective film of nano-particles. The reflective surface of the mirrors can be deformed using a locally applied magnetic field and thus serves as a wavefront corrector. In this paper, the working principle of MFDMs is first presented, then the perspectives of MFDMs that will have to be addressed before they can be finally used practically in AO applications are discussed.

Resumen
Parallel elastic actuation is a highly promising concept for assisting preplanned trajectories such as repetitive tasks in industrial machines and robots. Nevertheless, due to the persisting challenges on spring lifetime, its full potential has yet to be leveraged in the industry. We propose a novel adaptive magnetic spring as a fatigue-free spring mechanism to enable variable stiffness actuators in long lifetime applications. The spring is designed to flexibly deal with variations in operating conditions, i.e., mass customization. We propose a co-design methodology which simultaneously optimizes the sizing of the magnetic spring (for the given machine and its operating conditions), together with the controls and ideal dynamic response of the system. This mechanism and the methodology are applied to a design problem of a weaving machine drivetrain, where the benefits of the adaptive magnetic spring are highlighted with respect to a fixed stiffness magnetic spring, and the current industrial benchmark without springs. Experimentally validated findings show a consistent and considerable improvement with respect to energy consumption and peak torque reduction of up to 47% and 64%, respectively, when comparing to the current industrial benchmark.

Resumen
The main objective of this paper is to propose, design, and control a novel dual servo magnetic levitation stage which is precise and vacuum compatible. The dual servo mechanism, comprising a coarse stage and a fine stage, was applied to a magnetic levitation stage system for the first time. The dual servo stage achieves high precision and a long stroke at the same time. The fine stage, which comprises voice coil motors, achieves high-precision motion by overcoming the limit of the coarse stage, the form of which is a planar motor. The planar motor was mathematically modeled and analyzed with respect to the main design parameters, after which the fine stage was optimally designed to be driven by high force. Both stages including a common heat exchanger were manufactured, and the heat exchanger cools down the heat given off from the planar motor and voice coil motors. The position measuring system consisted of laser interferometers and capacitive sensors, and the integrated dual servo stage was controlled with a master–slave control scheme. The experimental results showed a precision of 10 nm, thus confirming the suitability of the developed magnetic levitation stage for a high-precision fabrication process such as wafer lithography.

Resumen
Advances in metal epitaxial growth techniques have produced renewed interest in magnetic materials through the unique properties of novel atomically engineered structures. Ultrathin layered and nanocrystalline, textured composites possess unique magnetic properties which are intimately connected to the physical microstructure on both the atomic and nanometer length scales. The length scales present in magnetic interactions span several orders of magnitude from the atomic length scales of the exchange interaction, to the mesoscopic length scales important in anti-ferromagnetic RKKY coupling between thin ferromagnetic films and small particles, to the macroscopic length scales determined by the long range magnetostatic interactions which are responsible for the formation of magnetic domains.Special characterization and computation techniques are required to analyze the micromagnetic and microstructural properties of these novel, low dimensional systems. In order to correlate the structure with the magnetic properties of any system, in-situ growth, structural, chemical and magnetic characterization is desirable. Most methods used for the observation of micromagnetic structure rely on a contrast mechanism derived from the magnetic fields present in ferromagnetic systems. We have implemented the conventional Fresnel, and less conventional Differential Phase Contrast modes of imaging magnetic microstructure in an HB5 STEM.

Resumen
Conventional oil dampers are non-controllable passive dampers because the viscosity of the fluid used is not wide-range variable. By using magneto-rheological fluid (MRF), MRF damper has excellent performance for variable-damping applications. Due to the single-coil design in the general MRF damper, the obtained damping from MR effect is not quite large. This research provides a high-damping MRF damper by adopting multi-pole coil and special polarization configuration. The simulated results show that the new MRF damper has good performance in the magnetic field and damping. Compared with a similar-size general single-coil MRF damper, this new MRF damper can get 47% higher performance under the same operating conditions.

Resumen
Graphene has attracted great interest in materials science, owing to its novel electronic structures. Recently, magnetism discovered in graphene-based systems has opened up the possibility of their spintronics application. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the magnetic behaviors and electronic structures of graphene systems, including two-dimensional graphene, one-dimensional graphene nanoribbons, and zero-dimensional graphene nanoclusters. Theoretical research suggests that such metal-free magnetism mainly comes from the localized states or edges states. By applying an external electric field, or by chemical modification, we can turn the zigzag nanoribbon systems into half metal, thus obtaining a perfect spin filter.

Resumen
The recent growth of magnetic bearing applications in the chemical, utility and aerospace industries requires more accurate design tools to insure reliable and effective operation as components of the overall rotor bearing system. This paper provides a novel approach for simulating a flexible rotor suspended in magnetic bearings, accounting for eddy current effects. The manuscript discusses some magnetic bearing fundamentals, leading up to the new methods for modeling. Test results show very good correlation with theory and confirm the importance of considering eddy current effects. Surface conductivity and frequency dependent permeability effects on the B field in the magnet gaps are shown to be very significant on overall system stability. The results in the manuscript should be very useful to the design or test rotor dynamicist.
