Resumen

The use of generic verbs of speech in functions not related to their primary meaning, such as to introduce complements or adjuncts, is cross-linguistically widespread; it is also characteristic of some languages of Siberia. However, the distribution of non-canonical functions of generic verbs of speech among the languages of Siberia is very uneven, with striking differences even between dialects of one language. In this paper we attempt to elucidate whether shared inheritance, parallel independent developments, or areal convergence are the factors determining this distribution, using fine-scaled investigations of narrative data from a large number of Siberian languages and dialects. This enables us to uncover a wide range of non-canonical functions that the generic verb of speech has acquired in some of the languages investigated, as well as to highlight the very complex historical processes at play.

Resumen

AbstractWe analyze argument structure of whole-entity and handling classifier predicates in four sign languages (Russian Sign Language, Sign Language of the Netherlands, German Sign Language, and Kata Kolok) using parallel datasets (retellings of the Canary Row cartoons). We find that all four languages display a systematic, or canonical, mapping between classifier type and argument structure, as previously established for several sign languages: whole-entity classifier predicates are mostly used intransitively, while handling classifier predicates are used transitively. However, our data sets also reveal several non-canonical mappings which we address in turn. First, it appears that whole-entity classifier predicates can be used unergatively, rather than unaccusatively, contrary to expectations. Second, our data contain some transitive uses of whole-entity classifier predicates. Finally, we find that handling classifier predicates can express various complex event structures. We discuss what these findings imply for existing theories of classifier predicates in sign languages.

Resumen

Abaza, a polysynthetic ergative Northwest Caucasian language, shares with its neighbour and distant relative Kabardian a typologically peculiar use of the deictic directional prefixes monitoring the relative ranking of the subject and indirect object on the person hierarchy. In both languages, the cislocative (‘hither’) prefixes are used if the indirect object outranks the subject on the person hierarchy, and the translocative (‘thither’) prefixes are used in combinations of first person subjects with second person singular indirect objects. This pattern, reminiscent of the more familiar inverse marking and hence called ‘quasi-inverse’, is observed with ditransitive and bivalent intransitive verbs and is almost fully redundant, since all participants are unequivocally indexed on verbs by pronominal prefixes. I argue that this isogloss, shared by West Circassian (a close relative to Kabardian) but not with Abkhaz, the sister-language of Abaza, is a result of pattern replication under intense language contact, which has led to an increase of both paradigmatic and syntagmatic complexity of Abaza verbal morphology.

Resumen

This paper deals with the distribution of agreement patterns for target adjectives or past participles in Swiss German dialects focussing on non-attributive domains. While agreement outside the nominal phrase has been lost in the development towards Standard German and in most dialects, in some Swiss German dialects certain syntactic domains still show formal agreement. Against this backdrop, two topics will be addressed in this paper. It gives an overview of the extent, function and distribution of formal agreement within the clausal domain on the basis of survey data, as far as possible. Another focus is default neuter inflection, which no longer shows canonical gender agreement with a neuter controller, but has developed a new function in the field of aspectuality.

In this paper we investigate cross-linguistic variation in the morphosyntax of copular clauses, focusing on agreement patterns in binominal structures [NP1 BE NP2]. Our starting point is the alternation between NP1 and NP2 agreement, which arises both within and across languages. This alternation is typically taken to be confined to specificational (i.e. inverted) clauses, and previous analyses have strongly identified NP2 agreement with the syntax of inversion. However, we show that NP2 agreement is attested in a broader range of contexts, specifically in (assumed identity) equative structures, suggesting that it should not be correlated with specificational syntax. We present contrasting data from two languages – Persian and Eastern Armenian – for which the syntax of copular clauses is understudied. Whereas in Persian we see NP2 agreement in specificational structures but NP1 agreement in assumed identity equatives, in Eastern Armenian both types of structure yield NP2 agreement. We argue that the contrast between Persian and Eastern Armenian supports an approach that takes the NP1–NP2 alternation to arise as a phi-sensitivity in the probe–goal mechanics of Agree in a minimalist framework. Under this view, NP2 agreement is independent of syntactic inversion and is the result of the probe structure being articulated in such a way that certain NPs fail to Agree.

Abstract This paper analyzes fronting constructions in spoken Korean(ized) English. Non-canonical syntax is an important means of structuring discourse, but its use by speakers of Expanding Circle Englishes has so far received only insufficient attention in studies of World Englishes. Taking a corpus-linguistic approach, this study determines to which extent topicalization and left-dislocation are used by South Korean speakers of English in informal conversations. In our explanation of the results, which show that fronting constructions are clearly part of the Korean English repertoire albeit used with varying frequencies, we mainly draw on notions of language contact (i.e. Korean as the substrate being a topic-prominent language) and language acquisition processes.

We study FAD-languages, which are regular languages defined by finite sets of forbidden factors, together with their “canonical” recognizing automata. We are mainly interested in the possible asymptotic orders of growth for such languages. We analyze certain simplifications of sets of forbidden factors and show that they “almost” preserve the canonical automata. Using this result and structural properties of canonical automata, we describe an algorithm that effectively lists all canonical automata having a sink strong component isomorphic to a given digraph, or reports that no such automata exist. This algorithm can be used, in particular, to prove the existence of a FAD-language over a given alphabet with a given exponential growth rate. On the other hand, we give an example showing that the algorithm cannot prove non-existence of a FAD-language having a given growth rate. Finally, we provide some examples of canonical automata with a nontrivial condensation graph and of FAD-languages with a “complex” order of growth.

This paper makes a study of the derivation of the non-canonical object construction in Mandarin Chinese. In light of the transitivity of verbs, two cases in the NOC are discussed: a) the non-canonical object construction with transitive verbs and b) the non-canonical object construction with unergative verbs. Based on the theory of phase and phase extension, a mixture of direct object properties and PP object properties in the non-canonical object construction can be explained in that the non-canonical object is licensed by both the preposition and the verb.

Resumen

Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind sog. nicht-kanonische bzw. unintegrierte Nebensätze. Diese Nebensätze zeichnen sich dadurch aus, dass sie sich mittels gängiger Kriterien (Satzgliedstatus, Verbletztstellung) nicht klar als koordiniert oder subordiniert beschreiben lassen. Das Phänomen nicht-kanonischer Nebensätze ist ein Thema, welches in der Sprachwissenschaft generell seit den späten Siebzigern (Davison 1979) diskutiert wird und spätestens mit Fabricius-Hansen (1992) auch innerhalb der germanistischen Linguistik angekommen ist. Ein viel beachteter Komplex ist hierbei – neben der reinen Identifizierung nicht-kanonischer Satzgefüge – meist auch die Erstellung einer Klassifikation zur Erfassung zumindest einiger nicht-kanonischer Gefüge, wie dies etwa bei Fabricius-Hansen (1992) und Reis (1997) zu sehen ist. Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, eine exhaustive Klassifikation der angesprochenen Nebensatztypen vorzunehmen. Dazu werden zunächst – unter Zuhilfenahme von Korpusdaten – alle potentiellen Subordinationsmerkmale genauer untersucht, da die meisten bisherigen Studien zu diesem Thema die stets gleichen Merkmale als gegeben voraussetzen. Dabei wird sich herausstellen, dass nur eine kleine Anzahl von Merkmalen sich wirklich zweifelsfrei dazu eignet, Aufschluss über die Satzverknüpfungsqualität zu geben. Die anschließend aufgestellte Taxonomie deutscher Nebensätze wird schließlich einzig mit der Postulierung einer nicht-kanonischen Nebensatzklasse auskommen. Sie ist darüber hinaus auch in der Lage, die zahlreich vorkommenden Ausnahmefälle zu erfassen. Dies heißt konkret, dass auch etwaige Nebensätze, die sich aufgrund bestimmter Eigenschaften teilweise idiosynkratisch verhalten, einfach in die vorgeschlagene Klassifikation übernommen werden können. In diesem Zuge werde ich weiterhin zeigen, wie eine Nebensatzklassifikation auch sog. sekundären Subordinationsmerkmalen gerecht werden kann, obwohl diese sich hinsichtlich der einzelnen Nebensatzklassen nicht einheitlich verhalten. Schließlich werde ich eine theoretische Modellierung der zuvor postulierten Taxonomie vornehmen, die auf Basis der HPSG mittels Merkmalsvererbung alle möglichen Nebensatztypen zu erfassen imstande ist.
This study focuses on so-called non-canonical or unintegrated clauses in German. These clauses cannot easily be categorized as either subordinate or coordinate by using classical criteria like the syntactic function or the position of the finite verb. In linguistics in general, this phenomenon has been discussed since the seventies (Davison 1979) and Fabricius-Hansen (1992) brought this topic to German linguistics. Apart from the mere identification of non-canonical clause types, previous studies mostly deal with classification approaches in order to be able to subsume at least some non-canonical clause types under the same category, see Fabricius-Hansen (1992) or Reis (1997). This study aims at providing an exhaustive classification of non-canonical clause types. In order to do so, I will first look at all potential diagnostics that could be used to distinguish between different clause linkage patterns. This needs to be addressed because most previous studies simply assume a certain set of diagnostics to be relevant and valid. Eventually, it will turn out that only a very limited number of criteria can serve as clear diagnostics with regard to a certain clause linkage status. After that, I will present a taxonomy of German clauses that is able to cover all non-canonical clauses only with postulating one additional subcategory. Furthermore, this classification is also able to cover the numerous cases of non-canonical clauses that show idiosyncratic behavior. Besides, I will further show how such a classification can address so-called secondary diagnostics. Finally, the previously established taxonomy will be embedded in a generative framework. By using HPSG and its default inheritance principle, it is possible to capture all non-canonical clause types within one simple classification.

Les avancées rapides des télécommunications au cours des dernières décennies ont révolutionné la manière dont les gens échangent des informations. Grâce à ces progrès, l'utilisateur moyen peut désormais communiquer avec d'autres personnes à travers le monde en temps réel et avec un délai minimal. Avec environ 60 % de la population mondiale ayant accès à Internet, des milliards d'individus interagissent en partageant du contenu généré par les utilisateurs (UGC) sous diverses formes. Ce contenu généré par les utilisateurs, qui comprend souvent des critiques et des opinions, constitue une source précieuse d'informations, offrant une vue d'ensemble des tendances mondiales. La traduction automatique joue un rôle vital en permettant une communication fluide et en facilitant le traitement automatique de l'UGC à des fins d'exploration de données.Cependant, la traduction des UGC présente des défis uniques par rapport à la traduction d'un texte traditionnel. L'UGC est très productif et présente divers phénomènes tels que des caractères répétés, des erreurs typographiques, des contractions, du jargon et des structures de phrases non conventionnelles. Ces spécificités entraînent un nombre important de mots hors vocabulaire (OOV) et de séquences rares, qui posent des problèmes car ils ne sont pas représentés de manière adéquate dans les corpus parallèles standard utilisés pour entraîner les modèles de traduction automatique. En outre, les techniques conventionnelles d'adaptation au domaine, telles que le “fine-tuning”, n'ont qu'un succès limité dans la résolution de ces problèmes. Elles souffrent d'une dégradation des performances lorsqu'elles sont appliquées aux données du domaine et ne sont pas en mesure de suivre l'évolution constante de la nature de l'UGC.Dans cette étude, nous nous concentrons sur la tâche de traduction automatique des UGC dans le scénario "zero-shot", où nous nous abstenons d'utiliser des données d'apprentissage spécifiques aux UGC. Notre objectif est de développer des architectures de traduction automatique plus généralisées, capables de gérer le “distributional shift”, inhérente à l'évaluation de la traduction des UGC. Dans la phase initiale de notre recherche, nous avons consacré nos efforts à l'identification et à la quantification des spécificités de l'UGC qui entravent la performance de la traduction. Nous avons également créé des cadres d'évaluation et des collections de données pour nous aider dans cette tâche. À l'aide de modèles “off-the-shelf”, nous étudions les difficultés rencontrées par les systèmes de traduction automatique lorsqu'ils traduisent des UGC et nous établissons un lien entre les erreurs et les mécanismes sous-jacents.Ensuite, nous nous penchons sur l'étude et la proposition de différentes méthodes pour relever les défis posés par l'UGC. Ces méthodes comprennent l'exploration des pipelines de normalisation, l'emploi de techniques de tokenisation plus granulaires et l'utilisation de modèles de variables latentes pour améliorer la robustesse des systèmes de traduction automatique. Pour chacune de ces approches, nous évaluons systématiquement les performances et la robustesse des systèmes, nous effectuons une analyse détaillée des erreurs et nous proposons des pistes prometteuses pour aborder la traduction automatique des UGC dans une évaluation “zéro-shot”
The rapid advancements in telecommunications over the past few decades have revolutionized the way people exchange information. Thanks to these advancements, the average user can now communicate with others across the globe in real-time and with minimal delay. With approximately 60% of the global population having Internet access, billions of individuals interact by sharing user-generated content (UGC) in various forms. This UGC, which often includes reviews and opinions, provides a valuable source of information, offering a comprehensive view of global trends. Machine Translation (MT) plays a vital role in enabling smooth communication and facilitating the automatic processing of UGC for data mining purposes.However, translating UGC presents unique challenges compared to translating traditional text. UGC is highly productive and exhibits various phenomena such as repeated characters, typographical errors, contractions, jargon, and unconventional sentence structures. These specificities lead to a significant number of Out-of-Vocabulary tokens (OOVs) and rare sequences, which pose problems since they are not adequately represented in the standard parallel corpora used to train MT models. Additionally, conventional domain adaptation techniques like fine-tuning have limited success in addressing these challenges. They suffer from performance degradation when applied to in-domain data and are unable to keep up with the ever-evolving nature of UGC.In this study, we focus on the task of automatically translating UGC in the zero-shot scenario, where we restrain from using any UGC-specific training data. Our aim is to develop more generalized MT architectures that can handle the distributional drift inherent in UGC. In the initial phase of our research, we dedicated our efforts to identifying and quantifying the specificities of UGC that hinder translation performance. We have also created evaluation frameworks and data collections to aid in this endeavor. Using off-the-shelf models, we investigate the challenges faced by MT systems when translating UGC and link the errors to their underlying mechanisms.Subsequently, we delve into the study and proposal of different methods to address the challenges posed by UGC. These methods include exploring normalization pipelines, employing more granular tokenization techniques, and utilizing latent variable models to enhance the robustness of MT systems. For each of these approaches, we systematically evaluate the performance and robustness of the systems, conduct a detailed error analysis, and offer insights into promising avenues for tackling the automatic translation of UGC in the zero-shot setting

Grammatical gender is famously the most puzzling of the grammatical categories. Despite our solid knowledge about the typology of gender systems, exciting and unexpected patterns keep turning up which defy easy classification and straightforward analysis. Some of these question, stretch, or even threaten to cross the outer boundaries of the category. These regions are largely unexplored, yet are essential for our understanding of gender, besides being interesting in their own right. The purpose of this book is to explore the outer boundaries of the category of gender and discuss their theoretical significance. Canonical Typology, a cutting-edge approach already successfully applied to a range of linguistic phenomena, provides the ideal framework for this endeavour. In this approach, a linguistic phenomenon—for example, a morphosyntactic feature like gender—is established in terms of a canonical ideal: the clearest instance of the phenomenon. The canonical ideal is a clustering of properties that serves as a baseline from which to measure the actual examples that are found. This approach allows us to analyse any gender system and determine for each of its component properties whether it is more or less canonical. The languages discussed in this volume all diverge from the canonical ideal in interesting ways. Each language is assessed by international experts, who approach their work from a typological perspective. The book explores a wide range of typologically different languages drawn from all over the world, from South America to Melanesia, from an Italo-Romance dialect of Central Italy to Mawng of Northern Australia.

Based on the Synchronic Grammaticalisation Hypothesis and the theory of the syntax of events, this chapter explores the syntactic nature of the Chinese non-canonical object construction. The object in this construction is introduced by a null P, which is incorporated into the verbal head position, and a lexical verb serves as a functional item, vDO. This account is extended to the analysis of the motion event construction in Chinese. It involves the incorporation of a P into the verbal head position filled with a vDO in the form of a lexical verb. The only difference is that this P is phonologically overt. Therefore, the [V+Path] chunk in Chinese is a single lexical item. This means that the Chinese motion event construction by nature patterns with its counterpart in verb-framed languages, a conclusion that goes against the common assumption that Chinese is a satellite-framed language.

Resumen

In this paper, we propose a convention for repre-senting non-planar graphs and their least-crossing embeddings in a canonical way. We achieve this by using state-of-the-art tools such as canonical labelling of graphs, Nauty’s Graph6 string and combinatorial representations for planar graphs. To the best of our knowledge, this has not been done before. Besides, we implement the men-tioned procedure in a SageMath language and compute embeddings for certain classes of cubic, vertex-transitive and general graphs. Our main contribution is an extension of one of the graph data sets hosted on MathDataHub, and towards extending the SageMath codebase.

Resumen

The paper focuses on the interlacement of literary and iconographic elements by displaying an innovatory philological and stylistic approach, from a comparative perspective, in thematizing multilingual translational and adaptive aspects, ranging across Bernard Berenson's diaristic and epistolary corpus, in conjunction with his works on Italian visual culture. This interweaving gives occasion to the elaboration of multilinguistic textual influences and their verbo-visual artistic representations deduced from his innovative interpretative readings in the domain of world literature in modern times. Such analysis of the discourse of theoretical and literary nature, and of the pictoricity, refers to Bernard Berenson's multilingual considerations about canonical authors in English, Italian, French, German language, belonging to the Neoclassical and Romantic period, as well as to the contemporary era, as conceptualized in his autobiographical works, in correlation with his writings on Italian figurative art. The scope of this presentation is to discern and articulate Berenson's aesthetic ideas evoking literary and artistic modernity, that are infused with crucial notions of translational theory and conveyed through the methodology of close reading and comprising at the same time, in an omnicomprehensive manner, a plurality of tendencies intrinsic to social paradigms of cultural studies. Unexplored premises reflecting Berenson's vision of Italian culture, most notably of a visual stamp, will be analyzed through author's understandings of such adaptive translations or volumes to be subsequently translated in Italian, and through their intertwined intertextual applications, significantly contributing to further critical and hermeneutic reception thereof. Particular attention is drawn to its instancing in the field of Romantic literary production (Emerson, Byron), originally underscoring the specificities of each literary genre and expressive mode, of the narrative, lyric or theatrical nature, as well as concomitantly involving parallel notions as adapted variants within visual arts, and in such a way expressing theoretical views pertainable to Italian artworks too. Other analogous elements relevant to literary expression in the most varied cultural sectors such as philosophy, music, civilisational history (Goethe, Hegel, Kant, Wagner, Chateaubriand, Rousseau, Mme de Staël, Taine) are furnished, as well as the examples of the resonances of non-western cultures, with the objective of exploring the effect among readership bringing also to the renewal of Italian tradition.
