Texto completoThe idea supported in the literature for a long time was that the regulatory framework had a negative impact on the activity of firms, as well as on their prosperity. Starting from the 1990s, this vision started to change progressively and was substituted by a new approach in which the conflict between economic and ecological performance should be approached differently. More concretely, political decisions and researchers' endeavours triggered this new approach according to which neither the regulatory framework nor the reduction of pollution should involve any economic activity harming. According to this context, firms should introduce environmental innovations or eco-innovations which are, as their name suggests, innovations with less environmental negative externalities. The content of this thesis sticks with this context and aims to bring in new elements to the debate, to deepen the extant analysis related to the questions of the introduction of eco-innovation at the firm level, as well as by highlighting the French context. The first chapter of this thesis presents a theoretical and conceptual literature review on eco-innovation. This review is based on a bench of contributions in the field and aims to underline the impact of eco-innovation on firm performance, as well as the different consequences related to its activity. This review suggests that the effects of the introduction of eco-innovation can be decomposed into two separate categories: the internal effects and the external effects. First, internal effects are mainly related to employment and to the ability of firms to create more jobs, also including qualitative substitution effects based on improved qualifications. Second, external effects are related to changes in relationships across firms while complying with the environmental regulation through the transformation of the supply chain. The objective of this chapter is to develop and explain these mechanisms alongside other aspects related to eco-innovation.The second chapter includes a theoretical and an empirical analysis on the determinants of eco-innovation based on French data. Literature on the question is generally quite scarce, particularly regarding France, and almost inexistent concerning eco-organisational and eco-marketing innovations. The analysis along this chapter aims to emphasise these points, in a context marked by an increasing adoption of eco-organisational and eco-marketing innovations by firms. Results reveal a great importance of firm's reputation ahead of the introduction of all types of eco-innovation (product, process, organisation, and marketing), the importance of cost savings as well as the implementation of good environmental practices for the introduction of eco-organisational innovation, and the role of existing governmental aids and the contracts with customers for the introduction of eco-marketing innovation. Finally, the third chapter deals with the question of the impact of eco-innovation on firm growth, considering two growth indicators: employment and turnover, and analysing French data. After the presentation of a literature review, the empirical analysis is developed to analyse the impact of the introduction of eco-innovation (with no distinction in types), on both growth indicators previously explained. Following the very recent literature, multiple quantile regressions are performed given the non-linearity and the heterogeneity of firms' growth. Findings reveal a positive and significant relationship between eco-innovation and turnover growth of the top decile (10%) of the sample. Meanwhile, these results are not confirmed regarding eco-innovation and employment growth. Finally, other variables, namely patenting activity, research and development, and group ownership, are found to be important for firms' growth of the sample whatever the growth indicator used
Johnsen, Gudrun. "Prise de risque au niveau de l'entreprise : à la recherche d'une croissance durable". Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PSLEE063.
Texto completoThis dissertation explores credit risk at the corporate level, with respect to corporate ownership structures, gender of the corporate owner and how bank executives were incentivized to allocate credit in the run up to the Great Financial Crisis. It compares credit risk associated with funding of business groups versus stand alone firms. It tests whether leverage, firm profitability and probability of default at the firm level can be attributed to the gender of the firm leadership. Lastly, it provides a detailed account of how bank executives in the Icelandic banks were incentivized to allocate credit during a rapid credit growth episode leading up to the failure of the banks

Texto completoMany specialists have shown interest in the values tha sport can convey in a company. However, few analysed the skills and abilities gained by a high level sportsman in their career and what this can bring to their managment within an organisation. Within the context of perpetually changing global environment executives are constantly looking for ways in which to gain further developement from their human capital in order to guarantee the success of the firm. It is therefore interpersonal skills rather than well practised managemnt techniques that are a distinguishing factor. An important theoretical debate concerns the acquisition of "managerial skills". The multiplication of qualifications shows the importance of an academic training to gain managerila skills. However, such a necessity has been brought into question by such eminent managment theoreticians as Mintzberf. He argues that managment requires first and formost interpersonal skills which are important as technical skills. However, it is difficult to indoctrinate implicit knowledge and emotional intelligence through one universal method of leraning. Whitin this persperctive the question remains as whether the type of educion received in high level sporting competition can compensate for deficiencies from academic education. Our thesis therefore is a reflection that has been studied very little in an academic sense and will lead us to develop an emprirical method, firstly through the creation of a questionnaire to gain access to the experts opitions and the to apply the methodology DELPHI, which is particulary well adapted to construct the beginnings of a discussion in a field which has so far had too little attention in scientific work

Texto completoThe target research is to explain industrial behaviours towards environmental data. In the last years, taking to account ecological data in firm's management has become compulsory. In this situation, firms have developed various strategies under legal pressure. The general research methodology is divided in two steps : an exploratory research aimed at setting up an ecological behaviour typology; a contingency analysis of potentially influent factors of industrial behaviours. Due to the high number of elements that may influence the environmental management, the study will only concern firms that are located in the dunkerque's area and which industrial activities are chemistry, metallurgy and foodmanufacturing

Texto completoThe research aims at the determination of the factors which account for the perception of the firm’s competitiveness at the Euro-international level, and at seeing whether the up-grading strategy allows the industrial firm to become competitive. In a first part, entitled “The competitiveness process : a multidimensional analysis”, we have tried to show theoretically and then empirically that the concept of competitiveness can be bound to the firm and/or to the product, both at the national and international levels. The theoretical syntheses, were they economic or organisational, have shown a multidimensional and multifactor aspect to competitiveness. In the second part, entitled “up-grading strategy : a new development orientation for the Tunisian small and middle industries (PMI)”, we try to see whether the up-grading strategy in order to reach the competitiveness goal, follows a strategic process which allows the sustained development of the firm. We have built all our reasoning around the indications of the basic theoretical models. We have integrate within each part (I and II) the empirical validation of each hypothesis of the model that we have devised in order to explain competitiveness and the up-grading strategy according to an approach based on the perception of the Tunisian leaders. The proposed survey concerned seventy-six small and middle Tunisian industrial firms. According to the Tunisian officials, competitiveness was appreciated through the competitiveness of the nation, of the firm and of the product and the efficiency of “up-grading” national programme was conditioned by the success of the carrying out of the whole up-grading procedure

Texto completoMuch research has been devoted to examining mergers and acquisitions on the one hand, and inter-firm alliances on the other hand. Both these moves affect a firm's size in one way or another and are thus likely to have an impact on performance. However, the work on M&As or on alliances, while recognizing their size benefits –mainly economies of scale and market power- very rarely compares these different modes of growth to one another, or to organic growth. Our research aims specifically at analyzing the impact of each alternative mode of growth on the size effects resulting from the achieved growth. In this dissertation, we develop conceptual arguments on the relative impact of these modes of growth on performance. We then test the resulting hypotheses on a sample of 83 firms in the global retail sector over the 1984-2003 period. Our results suggest that both M&As and alliances negatively affect performance though they both enhance market power. However, we show that the choice to form alliances or engage in M&As is determined by firm characteristics that also affect performance; when accounting for this endogeneity, we find, as expected, lower impact of mode choice on performance

Texto completoThe world is now changing with lightening speed. The greatest of those changes are occurring in the political and technological spheres. Geopolitical shifts have brought politics and business closer together. Political upheavals are incessantly reshaping the circumstances in which individuals, societies, and companies operate, which doesn't make markets in total isolation from politics. Politics molds and constrains markets through its rules, norms, and institutions. Trade regimes, sanctions, and national laws, for instance, shape businesses' environment. Tumultuous reverses, such as wars and revolutions, and other minor events, such as social activism and cyber threats, still take firms by surprise. Therefore, firms are forced to plan and act beyond their immediate environment. The meaning of political risk has changed. A few decades ago, political risk could be summarized in governmental actions, such as industry-related regulations or assets seizing in dictatorships. Today, however, governments are no longer the only arbiter. The twenty-first-century political risk has a broader and more complicated meaning. A civil war in Syria results in a refugee crisis in Europe. An anti-Chinese protest in Vietnam fuels stock-outs in the clothing industry in America. Rice and Zegart (2018) define the twenty-first-century political risk as “the probability that a political action could affect a company in significant ways.” Put in the most elemental terms, political actions emphasize the growing impact of risk generators outside army barracks and party headquarters. In today's competitive markets, firms need to consider all risks engendered by the widening array of global political actors, journalists, social activists, documentary filmmakers, etc. Historically, revolutions, nationalization, seizure of assets were the political risk chorus. However, for the modern-day global firms consider this risk on much more and more aspects. Thus, companies, and particularly international firms see the market as a global place and they plan their strategies accordingly. SeaWorld story, among many others, points out that firms can be dramatically blindsided by political actions of small groups of people and the power of individuals charged by connective technologies. The twenty-first-century political environment is an important external factor of uncertainty for firms. It can, therefore, constrain or foster their growth opportunities and survival. This thesis addresses the relationship between the modern-day politics and corporate financial decisions. So far, prior research studies have only focused on country-level and sector-level measures of political risk in the absence of direct ones. This dissertation, instead, traces through the ways in which political risk can affect U.S. firms' behaviour, using a new firm-level proxy to measure the risk. My dissertation is a three-paper compilation of studies related to political risk and corporate finance. In my first paper, I examine the effect of firm-level political risk on corporate cash holdings and cash management. The second paper investigates whether firm-level political risk affects trade credit provision. Finally, the third paper tackles the issues in measurement of political risk and examines the effect of the novel political risk measure on corporate investment and financing decisions

Texto completoThe creation of norms within organizations is a phenomenon that is subject to social influences, interactions between individuals, negotiations between actors and the diffusion of innovations. The individual has a key role in this phenomenon through the initiation of a new norm, its acceptance or its diffusion. However, the contribution of individuals to normative creation is not fully exploited by the literature. The objective of the current research was to bridge this gap by isolating cases of individual commitments for the creation of specific norms. The purpose is to capture the richness of individuals' contributions to this creation and to better understand the reasons behind their actions in favour of a new norm. The research presents the formation of commitment in the form of a three-phase process : questioning the status quo, evaluating commitment positively and manifesting commitment through actions and behaviours. This process is driven by emotional and cognitive determinants within individuals and is enabled by personal, interpersonal, societal and organizational factors

Texto completoIn the current industrial context, the offer is largely higher than the demand. Therefore, the customers are more and more exigent. To distance themselves, companies need to offer to their customers the best quality products, the best costs, and with controlled lead times as short as possible. Last years, the struggle for reducing costs was accentuated within companies. However, stocks represent an important financial asset, and therefore, it is essential to control them. In addition, a bad management of stocks led either to delays in delivery, which generate additional production costs, either to the unnecessary inventory. The latter one can occur at different levels (from components at the last level to finished product), it costs money and immobilize funds. That is why, planners have to look for efficient methods of production and supply planning, to know exactly for each component, and when to order and in which quantity. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the supply planning in an uncertain environment. We are interested in a replenishment planning for multi-level assembly systems under a fixed demand and uncertainty of components lead times. We consider that each component has a fixed unit inventory cost; the finished product has an inventory cost and a backlogging cost per unit of time. Then, a general mathematical model for replenishment planning of multi-level assembly systems, genetic algorithm and branch and bound method are presented to calculate and to optimize the expected value of the total cost which equals to the sum of the inventory holding costs for the components, the backlogging and the inventory holding costs for the finished product. We can state by the different results that the convergence of the GA doesn't depend only on the number of components in the last level but also on the number of levels, the type of the BOM and the backlogging cost for the finished product
Dymyd, Lesya. "Organizational ambidexterity : a fractal and dynamic case". Thesis, Strasbourg, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016STRAB001/document.
Texto completoThe main objective in management of any organization is a successful and sustainable performance. To survive over time, a company should combine two competing activities. On the one hand, it must exploit existing certainties to be effective in the short term, and on the other hand, being capable at the same time to explore new opportunities to be innovative in the future. Ambidextrous organizations have the ability to pursue these activities simultaneously and produce radical and incremental innovation. In our research, we show that to achieve ambidexterity separation of activities is important, but not sufficient. Without integration between business structures and processes, the exploratory activity of the innovation unit is more likely to shrink and disappear with time as unprofitable function. To survive and sustain in the long term, a company should adapt fractal and dynamic ambidexterity. This new concept provides us with a solution to the question of balance and determines the organizational ability to define and set the appropriate proportions of exploration and exploitation simultaneously at multiple organizational levels and re-configure them when it is necessary to meet the change
Cachat-Rosset, Gaëlle. "Un nouveau paradigme pour apprécier l’impact du climat diversité sur la performance des salariés". Thesis, Toulouse 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOU10028/document.
Texto completoThis research aims to better understand the impact of diversity climate, as an organizational climate, on individual employee performance. We use the conceptual framework of Kopelman et al. (1990).However, the concept of diversity climate has been criticized for its conceptual and methodological shortcomings. In a first article, we produce an in-depth literature review (number of studies analyzed = 62), and we propose a reconstruction of diversity climate in three dimensions: intentionality, programming and praxis. We rely on Arthur and Boyles (2007)’s HRM system structure and on Kulik (2014)'s diversity management system components conceptual frameworks. In a second article, we operationalize diversity climate as reconceptualized, developing and validating an 11-item measurement scale at the organizational level. To proceed, we conducted three studies (N=150; N=398; NUnit =11, Nindividual =221) that allowed us to validate the psychometric properties of the scale in terms of reliability and convergent, discriminant, nomological and predictive validity. Finally, in a third article we test our research hypotheses with a final study (Nunit =34; Nindividual =509). Our results show that organizational diversity climate positively influences individual employee performance, and that job satisfaction and affective organizational commitment mediate this relationship. Mediation of normative organizational commitment is inconclusive. Our research has a significant contribution conceptually and methodologically, since it proposes an innovative structural approach and a measure for the study of diversity climate, beyond the dominant paradigms of diversity management. It also offers a strong managerial contribution, providing a taxonomy for diversity climates in organizations and opening up several avenues for practitioners to develop it
