Resumen
Waterbirds may be a good indicator of harmful metal levels in aquatic environments. Waterbirds’ organs and tissues were tested for the presence of pollutants, such as metals. However, very few reports describe the use of bird feathers and their prey in metal analysis. In the present research, seven metals were measured in the tissue, kidney, liver, and feathers of the Indian pond heron, the black-crowned night heron, and their prey species, including crabs, prawns, molluscs, and fishes from a freshwater lake. Metals were examined using an ECIL-4141-double beam atomic absorption spectrophotometer (DB-AAS). Metal concentrations differed considerably in the tissue, kidney, liver, and feathers of the Indian pond heron and black-crowned night heron (p < 0.001). Indeed, this research discovered a good correlation between the metals of prey species and the tissues, kidneys, liver, and feathers of waterbirds that were tested. The regression model explained that the Cyprinus carpio influence the accumulation of metals about 98.2% in tissues, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Cyprinus carpio around 86.3% in the kidney, the Labeo rohita almost 47.2% in the liver and Labeo rohita nearly 93.2% on the feathers of the Indian pond heron. On the other hand, the Mystus vittatus, Cyprinus carpio, Labeo rohita influence about 98.8% in tissue, the Claris batrachus and Tilapia mossambica around 93.3% in kidney, the Mystus vittatus, Cyprinus carpio, about 93.2% in liver and the freshwater crab (Travancoriana schirnerae), freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and a fish (Cyprinus carpio) nearly 93.2% in feathers in the black-crowned night heron. This research evaluated metals in the dead carcasses of waterbirds, a non-invasive biomonitoring technique for pollution. Overall, the investigation revealed that the lake is severely contaminated with metals. Therefore, the management and protection of aquatic habitats, particularly freshwater lakes, should be enhanced to rescue wild species that rely on aquatic ecosystems and to ensure that people have access to clean drinking water.

Resumen
A total of 72 samples (Oral swab, cloacal swab and faeccal sample) were aseptically collected from different species (Purple Heron, Demoiselle Crane Pond Heron (adult), Pond Heron (young), Cattle Egret, Night Heron (adult), Night Heron (young) and Little Cormorant) of apparently healthy water birds of Dhaka Zoo of Bangladesh for The isolation and identification of bacterial flora. All the collected samples were inoculated in different bacteriological media for the study of their cultural properties. Gram’s staining, motility test and biochemical tests were also performed for the proper diagnosis of the isolated bacteria. Slide agglutination test was also performed to confirm the suspected Salmonella. Five types of bacteria were isolated and identified. The antibiogram of five randomly selected isolated bacteria of each genus were also studied. Among the isolated bacteria the isolation rate of E. coli was 54.16 % followed by Salmonella spp.31.94 %, Staphylococcus spp. 27.78%, Bacillus spp. 26.38 % and Proteus spp. 8.33%. Among the isolates, E.coli was found to be most prevalent bacteria. Among the samples the isolation rate of bacteria was higher in cloacal swab 54.16%, followed by oral swab 51.38% and faecal sample 43.05%. There was marked variation in the antibiotic sensitivity and resistant patterns of the isolated bacteria to the antibiotics available in the markets. It was found that most of the isolated bacteria were highly sensitive to enrofloxacin and norfloxacin. Ampicillin and furazolidone could not affect the growth of any isolated bacteria. Resumen
The Black-crowned Night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is a known visitor in Sumatra with more sighting records in the eastern side of the island. Meanwhile, on the west, it was historically recorded from only two offshore islands, namely Nias and Enggano. During the waterbird survey from early 2018 at Pasir Jambak Beach of Padang City in the coastline of West Sumatra, a Night heron was spotted among the colony of mixed egret species. This is the first record of its kind in the province of West Sumatra, although, previous records cover almost all provinces in Sumatra. The summary of the compiled records of this species indicates that it is probably a vagrant along the western coastline, while it visits more frequently on the eastern side.

Resumen
The growth rates and productivity of bacteria in the communities living on hard limestone substrate and sand were determined from the rates of incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA. Two reefs in the southern Great Barrier Reef, around Heron Island and One Tree Island, were studied during summer (January 1986). The specific growth rates varied on a diel cycle, being slowest at night, in both sand and hard substrate. They ranged from 0.005 h,-1 at night to 0.025 h-1 during the day in sand and from 0.002 to 0.01 h-1 in hard substrate. Productivity was also greater during the day than at night, ranging from 1 mg C m-2 h-1 at night to 5.5 mg C m-2 h-1 during the day in sand and from 0.5 to 2 mg C m-2 h-1 in hard substrate. Values were similar for both islands. The increase of four- to five-fold in bacterial growth rates in the sand and hard substrate on Heron Island during the daytime indicates that the heterotrophic bacteria rely mostly on organic matter exuded from the algae with which they are associated.

Resumen
Heron colonies are dynamic components of wetlands. Therefore, their systematic monitoring is important for the management of both birds and wetlands. During the period 1988–2018, we counted breeding pairs of seven colonial breeding heron species at 65 colonies across 37 wetlands in Greece. We considered as annual variables of a population: (a) years since 1988, (b) Natura 2000 network inclusion, (c) protected area management authority overseeing, (d) wetland type (new or restored), and (e) new colonies (established after 2003). The Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis and the Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides had a positive breeding population trend. The Black-crowned Night Heron Nycticorax nycticorax, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, and Grey Heron Ardea cinerea had a negative trend, while the Purple Heron Ardea purpurea population was stable. The Great White Egret Ardea alba bred sporadically at only a few sites which precluded the evaluation of its population trend. The informative population variables differed among species, even of those at the same colony, which suggests trends are also affected by conditions at wintering grounds. The study highlights the need for the systematic monitoring of heron colonies and the protection of foraging/breeding areas in order to reverse the observed negative population trends.

Resumen
The number of active black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) nesting colonies in Illinois has declined significantly over the past century. Habitat loss/degradation and other factors such as exposure to environmental contaminants and competition for nest sites at established colonies may have contributed to this decline. In this study, we examined recent trends in population levels of Black-crowned Night-Herons nesting at wetlands associated with Lake Calumet in southeastern Chicago, Illinois. The number of black-crowned night herons nesting annually at these wetlands has fluctuated widely over the last two decades. Immigration of herons from riverine colonies may have driven population increases during the mid-1980s and early 1990s. However, this population has remained relatively stable at between 300 and 400 pairs during 1997–2003.

Resumen
Remote sensing of anthropogenic light has substantial potential to quantify light pollution levels and understand its impact on a wide range of taxa. Currently, the use of space-borne night-time sensors for measuring the actual light pollution that animals experience is limited. This is because most night-time satellite imagery and space-borne sensors measure the light that is emitted or reflected upwards, rather than horizontally, which is often the light that is primarily perceived by animals. Therefore, there is an important need for developing and testing ground-based remote sensing techniques and methods. In this study, we aimed to address this gap by examining the potential of ground photography to quantify the actual light pollution perceived by animals, using sea turtles as a case study. We conducted detailed ground measurements of night-time brightness around the coast of Heron Island, a coral cay in the southern Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and an important sea turtle rookery, using a calibrated DSLR Canon camera with an 8 mm fish-eye lens. The resulting hemispheric photographs were processed using the newly developed Sky Quality Camera (SQC) software to extract brightness metrics. Furthermore, we quantified the factors determining the spatial and temporal variation in night-time brightness as a function of environmental factors (e.g., moon light, cloud cover, and land cover) and anthropogenic features (e.g., artificial light sources and built-up areas). We found that over 80% of the variation in night-time brightness was explained by the percentage of the moon illuminated, moon altitude, as well as cloud cover. Anthropogenic and geographic factors (e.g., artificial lighting and the percentage of visible sky) were especially important in explaining the remaining variation in measured brightness under moonless conditions. Night-time brightness variables, land cover, and rock presence together explained over 60% of the variation in sea turtle nest locations along the coastline of Heron Island, with more nests found in areas of lower light pollution. The methods we developed enabled us to overcome the limitations of commonly used ground/space borne remote sensing techniques, which are not well suited for measuring the light pollution to which animals are exposed. The findings of this study demonstrate the applicability of ground-based remote sensing techniques in accurately and efficiently measuring night-time brightness to enhance our understanding of ecological light pollution.

Resumen
The present ornithological report for the Camargue covers five years (1990-1994). This time-period was characterised by mild winters, high yearly rainfall in 1990, 1993 and 1994 and a sharp drop of salinity in the Vaccarès. The Little Egret and the Cattle Egret have increased their breeding figures that might be related to some mild winters and good breeeding success. The Black-crowned Night Heron was still at a low level. With about 1500 breeding pairs, the Grey Heron has nearly tripled its numbers since 1981, whereas the Purple Heron has continued to decline. The following species have become new breeders : White Stork, Great Egret, Glossy Ibis, Mute Swan, Greylag Goose and Common Buzzard. Some others have become rare breeders : Collared Pratincole, Stone-curlew, Eurasian Scops Owl, Little Owl and Com Bunting. These species have been threatened by habitat alterations to their breeding grounds or along their migration routes and wintering quarters. There is a concern about the breeding of gulls, terns and waders in the two salines of Camargue. While the number of breeding islets has remained un¬ changed, most of them are now colonised by the Yellow-legged Gull. This has led to dramatic population shifts of the smaller species from one saline (Salin de Giraud) to the other (Aigues-Mortes). At the latter site, the smaller species have, moreover, adopted nest sites with low breeding success. Thus, the survival of several species is guaranteed by immigration movements from abroad. The Black-headed Gull has continued to decline, but the Slender-billed Gull, the Mediterranean Gull and the Sandwich Tern has increased and other species have remained more or less stable. The trend of all these species should be followed with great care and the carrying capacity of the two salines must be urgently enhanced. A few individuals of some trans-Saharan migrants have overwintered (Black-crowned Night Heron, Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, Black-winged Stilt, Common Tern, Whiskered Tern, Wryneck and Yellow Wagtail) or have increasingly overwintered (Ringed Plover and Kentish Plover). The recent mild winters may have favoured this trend. Two other species (Cetti’s Warbler and Fantailed Warbler) have increased their breeding numbers probably for the same reason. The Purple Swamphen and the Spotless Starling are expected to become new breeders in a near future. The Common Crane and the Greylag Goose have increased their wintering numbers. The Camargue still remains a good breeding area for the Mallard but the Gadwall did not progress. The Common Pochard is still absent as a breeder. Among the Anatidae, only the Greylag Goose and the Mute Swan have increased as breeders. The high hunting pressure is suspected to be the major factor that limits the overall carrying capacity of the Camargue for wintering ducks and coots. A concern for wildlife conservationists and for hunters.

Resumen
Eight species of birds fed on a community of sticklebacks living in salt marsh pools along the southern shore of the St. Lawrence estuary in May and June when the fish breed. Three birds, the black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), the bronzed grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), and the ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) accounted for 80% of the estimated captures. Bird predation removed about 30% of the sticklebacks in the marsh. Significantly more male than female Gasterosteus aculeatus and G. wheatlandi were eaten, indicating selective predation is playing a role in structuring this fish community.

Resumen
The literature on the past distribution and status of the White-eared Night Heron in China is reviewed, and updated based on recent field investigations and reports from Hubei, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan. Recent records reveal the species to be more widespread than previously thought, but there remain many uncertainties about the area of occupancy and connectivity between known populations. The rate of discovery of new sites suggests the species may be under-recorded, but a number of recent sites have been lost, and no truly secure populations are known. There thus remains an urgent need for better information from throughout the species' range, especially from historical sites, as well as increased protection.

Resumen
This is the first record of an acanthocephalan cystacanth (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) parasitizing the crab Gecarcinus planatus collected in the Socorro island, Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico. The highest prevalence was found at coastal localities (60% vs. 3.5%) and was significantly higher in males than in females (50% vs. 16%). Cystacanth numbers were positively correlated to the size of parasitized crabs (r=0.614; p<0.01). Since these crabs are included in the diet of the night heron, red-tailed hawk and feral cat, it is likely that one or more of these species are the definitive host for this acanthocephalan.

Abstract Habitat composition around nesting sites is one of the important factors that drive the colonial dynamics of waterbirds. Using a Monte Carlo procedure, we compared the changes that occurred over a period of 25 years (1975-1999) in (1) the distribution and composition of tree-nesting heron colonies and (2) the distribution and amount of rice cultivated in the Camargue region of southern France. During the period of 1967-1999, 25 sites in the Camargue were each occupied for at least one breeding season by colonies of tree-nesting herons. Total number of nests, number of nests per colony, and number of colonies varied among the four species considered. During the same period, the proportion of the study area planted with rice fluctuated widely. Overall, nests of all species tended to be located at sites surrounded by a large area of rice fields. However, examination of the results revealed a difference among species in selection of nest colony sites: Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis), Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), and Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) seemed more inclined to nest on sites surrounded by rice fields; whereas Little Egrets' (Egretta garzetta) nest choice was not consistently related to availability of rice fields. That pattern was especially noticeable at a small scale (i.e. <5-km radius around the colony). Our spatial analysis supports previous findings on the effects of rice farming on the colony dynamics of tree-nesting herons. We conclude that different landscape scales are an important consideration for understanding colony site selection and need to be taken into account in the planning and design of agri-environmental development schemes.

Resumen
The study on Dao My Stork Garden with an area of 3 hectares located in Tan Phuc village, Dao My commune, Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province during 2017 - 2018 has identified 32 bird species belonging to 29 genera, 18 families, 7 orders, including 21 resident species, 11 winter migratory species. There is one species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007) which is Anastomus oscitans. There are 6 species of water birds living and colony nesting in the stork garden: Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Chineses pond Heron (Ardeola bacchus), Egret Cattle (Bubulcus coromandus), Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Intermediate Egret (Egretta intermedia) and Asian Openbill (Anastomus oscitans). The water bird species with the highest number of population in breeding season is the Little Egret. There is a stratification of the habitat and nesting areas of water birds according to the vegetation in the stork garden. Birds mainly nest and live on eucalyptus and bamboo trees. Since this stork garden formed on the land is owned by the household, in order to preserve the stork garden for sustainablity, it is necessary to support from the local government and organizations to invest in the restoration of trees in the garden and protecting the stork garden from illegal bird hunting.
