Resumen
We relate the experience obtained in the use of the right superior laryngeal nerve (motor branch)–cricothyroid muscle pedicle flap in dogs in an attempt to reinnervate the right posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA). The right vocal cord was paralyzed by severance and removal of 2.5 cm of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve. Evaluation 6 months postoperatively revealed the vocal fold remobilization on the right side to have an average of about one half the mobility of the left, normal side. After the recurrent laryngeal and superior laryngeal nerves on the left were severed, the vocal cord mobility dropped to only about one fourth. This suggests that the dogs had contralateral reinnervation. Nevertheless, the right vocal cord mobility, driven only by the right superior laryngeal nerve, was enough to secure an adequate airway without the need for a tracheotomy. This experiment was statistically significant on comparison with a control group. Electromyographic studies as well as PCA histochemistry were performed.

Resumen
Introduction The definitive diagnosis of neurocysticercosis continues to be challenging. We evaluate the role of newer magnetic resonance imaging techniques including constructive interference in steady state, susceptibility-weighted imaging, arterial spin labelling and magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. Aims and objectives To study the utility of newer magnetic resonance imaging sequences in the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis. Patients and methods Eighty-five consecutive patients with neurocysticercosis attending a tertiary care hospital and teaching centre in northern India were included in the study. The diagnosis of neurocysticercosis was made by the Del Brutto criteria. All patients received treatment according to standard guidelines and were followed at 3-month intervals. The following magnetic resonance sequences were performed at baseline: T1 and T2-weighted axial sequences; T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery axial sequences; diffusion-weighted imaging; susceptibility-weighted imaging; pre and post-contrast T1-weighted imaging; heavily T2-weighted thin sections (constructive interference in steady state); arterial spin labelling ( n = 19); and magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( n = 24). Results The mean (±SD) age was 29.4 ± 12.9 years and 76.5% were men. Seizures were the commonest symptom (89.4%) followed by headache (24.3%), encephalitis (9.4%) and raised intracranial pressure (9.4%). Scolex could be visualised in 43.7%, 55.5% and 61.2% of neurocysticercosis patients using conventional, susceptibility-weighted angiography and constructive interference in steady state imaging sequences, respectively. Susceptibility-weighted angiography and constructive interference in steady state images resulted in significantly higher ( P < 0.01) visualisation of scolex compared to conventional sequences. Conclusion Newer magnetic resonance imaging modalities have a lot of promise for improving the radiological diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.

Resumen
A wide spectrum of nowadays availible radiological and imaging methods in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with colorectal cancer enabled not only the improvement of primary colorectal malignancy detection, precise staging, regional involvement and metastatic spread assessment, but also the posttherapeutical estimation and follow- up. Having in mind that the exact diagnostic assessment of colorectal carcinoma by use of different imaging modalities still raises a lots of contradictories, in this report we have tried to present the possibilities of newer imaging techniques in the diagnostic evaluation of the patients with colorectal cancer.

Resumen
Mandible fracture repair is commonly undertaken by otolaryngologists. Although the essential principles of reduction and immobilization are undisputed, the approach used to obtain these goals varies considerably. We performed a critical evaluation of all mandible fractures treated at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center by the otolaryngology service between January 1988 and February 1992, with the purpose of better defining the indications for plate fixation and for the use of more traditional techniques. One hundred eighty-three fractures in 112 patients were evaluable. Thirty-six (32.1%) of these patients had at least one plate placed (group A); 39 (34.8%) underwent an open procedure, with Interosseous wire fixation (group B); and 37 (33.0%) were treated with closed techniques (group C). The severity of fracture (Indexed by comminution, presence of infection, teeth in the fracture line, interval to repair, and whether the fracture was open or closed) was similar in plated and nonpiated mandibles. Mean (± standard deviation) operative times for the three groups were 3.2 ± 1.6 hours for group A, 3.0 ± 0.9 hours for group B, and 1.4 ± 0.5 hours for group C. The number of follow-up visits required was not statistically different (group A, 5.6 ± 3.8 visits; group B, 5.2 ± 2.5 visits; and group C, 5.3 ± 2.0 visits). The overall Incidence of major complications was 14.3% (16 of 112), including 11 of 36 (30.6%) in group A, 4 of 39 (10.3%) in group B, and 1 of 37 (2.7%) in group C. The approximate cost of one compression plate with four screws is $550, compared with $12 for wire suitable for fixation (24 gauge). We conclude that plates are more expensive than wire fixation, are associated with a higher incidence of major complications, and should be reserved for situations in which traditional techniques are not feasible.

Resumen
Recent advances in orthodontic wire alloys have resulted in a varied array of wires that exhibit a wide spectrum of properties. Appropriate use of these wires may enhance the patient comfort; reduce the chair side time and duration of the treatment. Though superior materials and techniques are now available and many replace conventional methods, one should keep in mind that no arch wire is ideal or best for all stages of treatment. Since arch wires are the main force system in orthodontics, the knowledge about newer arch wires will help us to select the appropriate wire within the context of their intended use during treatment.

Resumen
The vast majority of graphs appearing in the psychiatric literature consist of the traditional line graphs, histograms, and bar charts. Over the past decade, new graphing techniques have appeared which make the data easier to read and which present much more information than simply group means and confidence intervals. These methods include horizontal bar charts, dot charts, stem-and-leaf plots, box plots, and notched box plots. This paper describes these new techniques, as well as older ones, such as smoothing, and warns against using some of the options found in graphics programs: 3-dimensional (3-D) graphs, stacked graphs, and pie charts.

Resumen
The prevalence of OSA has been found to be high in people of different ages with males higher than 50 years of age being highly affects. The aim of this review is to cover the information regarding the prevalence of OSA and the treatment modalities for the management of OSA. In this review, we consider the pros and cons of each treatment modality for OSA. The review article also describes the patient perspective of the OSA treatment meaning the patient compliance and patient adherence with OSA treatment methods. Treatment methods for OSA such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, oral appliances, and relatively newer treatment modalities such as mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion have been reviewed in detail in this article. High quality randomized trials with different treatment options are required so that clinicians can get adequate knowledge for treatment of patients with OSA.
