Resumen
As a Chinese American born in Peking and educated both in China and in the United States, the author has, for several decades, been interested in the impact of Chinese culture, including medicine, on American society. While holding a professorship in physiology and biophysics at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, the author began to teach a course on Chinese medical history in the early 1960s. In 1972, he founded the Institute for Advanced Research in Asian Science and Medicine (IARASM) which publishes the American Journal of Chinese Medicine, holds international conferences for scholars and physicians interested in indigenous medical systems, trains physicians for acupuncture therapy, and fosters centers for urban primary health care. The author is a member of the World Health Organization's Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional Medicine. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Chinese Medicine which now reaches an audience in 45 countries. The IARASM is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine. The author served on the Rockefeller Commission of New York State on Acupuncture in 1973, and, in the same year, served as a panel member of the National Institutes of Health Conference on Acupuncture. He visited China at the invitation of the Ministry of Public Health of the People's Republic of China or WHO in 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1984, and 1987 when he chaired meetings and lectured to faculty of several medical schools. The author envisages that the process of integration of all indigenous medicines of various cultures will end in the 21st century, at which time the "ecumenical medicine" - a term first used by Joseph Needham - movement will not be necessary, for all forms of medicine will be one system. The author has a great interest in the furtherance of indigenous medicine and their integration into one system, but his views and observations, as all endeavors in humanity, are not infallible.

Resumen
Broussard, an assistant professor at New York University’s Arthur L Carter Journalism Institute, has written an accessible book on Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) grip on people’s imagination. In twelve short chapters, she lays out a cautionary narrative on the limits of AI and technology in general. Her book joins several other recent volumes that attempt to show the limits of AI and the ethical implications of wholesale and blind adoption of AI to solve the world’s problems. These include M. Tegmark. Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, 2018; J. Aoun. Robot-Proof: Higher Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, 2017; M. Boden. Artificial Intelligence: A Very Short Introduction, 2018; and H. Collins. Artifictional Intelligence: Against Humanity’s Surrender to Computers, 2018.

Xu, Xin. "BTK Inhibitors Induce ABC-DLBCL Cell Apoptosis By Inhibiting CYLD Phosphorylation". Blood 134, Supplement_1 (13 de noviembre de 2019): 5046. http://dx.doi.org/10.1182/blood-2019-126763.

Texto completo
Resumen
BTK inhibitors induce ABC-DLBCL cell apoptosis by inhibiting CYLD phosphorylation Xin Xu1, Zhigang Zhu1, Feng Liu1 , Weijie Zhong1,Huabao Xiong2, Tiefeng Feng3, and Qingshan Li3 1Geriatrics Department, GuangZhou First People's Hospital, GuangDong, 510180, People's Republic of China. 2Precision Immunology Institute, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY 10029, U.S.A. 3Hemotology Department, GuangZhou First People's Hospital, GuangDong, 510180, People's Republic of China. Activated B cell-like diffuse large B cell lymphoma (ABC-DLBCL) is a common aggressive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Even though CD20 antibody (Rituximab) combination therapy improved the total prognosis of DLBCL, there are still many relapsed and refractory ABC-DLBCL cases. The new treatment options are urgently needed. Pathogenesis of ABC-DLBCL is different from germinal center B cell-like diffuse large B cell lymphoma (GCB-DLBCL), which is related to activation of B cell antigen receptor(BCR) signaling. The Bruton tyrosine kinase(BTK) plays a central role in BCR signaling. Inhibition of BTK function will affect BCR signaling activity, which is involved in maintaining the malignant phenotype in B-cell lymphoma. Now in clinic, BTK inhibitors like Ibrutinib or Acalabrutinib are used extensively in chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma(CLL/SLL), mantle cell lymphoma(MCL) as first line therapy or second line therapy. But in DLBCL its role is unclear now. Some DLBCL clinic trials got the better PFS and OS in BTK inhibitor combination therapy group(combined with Rituximab or RCHOP) but some got the negative results. Whether BTK inhibitors can definitely improve ABC-DLBCL survival and the mechanism how BTK inhibitors inducing cell death are needed further investigations. CYLD (cylindromatosis) is a tumor suppressor, its activity is inhibited by phosphorylation, which is related to apoptosis regulation pathway NF-kB in many kinds of tumors. In this study, we found that CYLD to be constitutively phosphorylated in ABC-DLBCL cell line models (HBL-1 and OCI-Ly10) as well as primary samples from patients with non-GCB DLBCL. We subsequently examined the effect of BTK inhibitors Ibrutinib (PCI-32765) and Acalabrutinib (ACP-196) on CYLD phosphorylation. We found that BTK inhibitors Ibrutinib and Acalabrutinib both induced ABC-DLBCL apoptosis by down-regulating CYLD phosphorylation in vivo and in vitro, even in the Rituximab resistant ABC-DLBCL cell line.Combination of BTK inhibitors and Rituximab would enhance this effect. Knockdown of CYLD in ABC-DLBCL cells reduced the level of cell death induced by BTK inhibitors, which showed that this cell death induced by BTK inhibitors was CYLD dependent. Through this study, we conclude that BTK inhibitors induce CYLD inactivation by regulating CYLD phosphorylation is clinical beneficial in ABC-DLBCL therapy, especially the relapsed or refractory ABC-DLBCL cases after Rituximab therapy. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Resumen
Objective. To compare the postoperative complications of open, laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomies. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 803 patients who underwent open, laparoscopic and retroperitoneoscopic nephrectomy on the basis of 3 clinics of the Medical Institute of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and in Republican scientific-clinical center «Urology»; Dushanbe, Tajikistan in the period from 2008 to, 2022. Postoperative complications were recorded and classified according to the Clavien-Dindo Classification (CDC). All analyses were performed on SPSS version 21.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, USA). Results. In the examined groups, no statistically significant differences were found between the operated patients by age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and concomitant diseases. Based on the analysis of the table, it can be concluded that the most significant differences were found for the indicator of intestinal damage in the LN group in relation to the PH and TN groups (2.23% and 1.98 %; p = 0.0345 and p = 0.0127); the indicator «Intestinal paresis» in the LN and TN groups in relation to the PH group (3.43% and 7.9%; p = 0.0422 and p = 0.0077); pneumothorax index in the TN group compared to the LN and PH groups (2.08% and 2.45%; p = 0.0123 and p = 0.0177); wound suppuration index in the PH and TN groups relative to the LN group (6.02%) and 10.60%); p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001); total the rate of complications in the TN group significantly differed in relation to the LN and PH groups (p = 0.0060). Conclusion. In this study, patients after open surgery had a higher percentage of complications, which is associated not only with traumatic access, but also the predominance in this group of patients with purulentinflammatory complications, as well as a large number of operations in the anamnesis.

Resumen
The goal of this contribution is to give an overall survey of the analytic schisms in the New York area from 1934 on. The general background, laying the groundwork for potential schisms, is described. There were several major schisms in the New York area. The first related to Horney's departure from the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. There were multiple splits in this group which eventuated in a psychoanalytic facility at the New York Medical College, as well as the establishment of the William Alanson White Institute. Then there was the establishment of a psychoanalytic training facility at Columbia University, one at the Downstate Medical Center, and another at the New York University School of Medicine. The various factors that played a role in the splits are discussed. Finally, there is a discussion of why psychoanalytic schisms take place.

Resumen
In this paper, the primary focus of cross-cultural communication research in the Russo-Ukrainian war revolves around understanding how is could interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, how comprehension and misunderstandings arise, and how communication bridges gender, ethnic, racial, linguistic, and cultural gaps to foster globalization, between the New York Times and the People's Daily. This paper revealed that constructing models based on these motivations will assist people in conducting more successful milliary campaigns with the reduced risks, especially, news coverage from New York Times and the People's Daily about the Russo-Ukrainian war varied a lot.

Resumen
Bertram D. Lewin (1896–1971) , a leading member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute in the late 1920s. Lewin's thinking was deeply influenced by Karl Abraham, whose delineation of the oral stage of libidinal development provided the theoretical foundation for Lewin's highly original psychoanalytic papers on mania, sleep and dreams. These contributions and his articulation of the oral triad – the wish to eat, the wish to be eaten and the wish to sleep – are reviewed and the stimulating influence his thinking exercised on his analytic colleagues is noted.

Resumen
Like revolutionaries throughout the modern world, Americans built a new, stable legal order on property confiscated from their enemies. Early in the American War for Independence, colonial governments collapsed, British courts closed, and ordinary people took the law into their own hands. They created committees that enforced harsh, revolutionary justice. But remarkably, by the end of the War, they were able to develop the stable legal institutions of new governments.

Resumen
George F. Root, Lowell Mason, and William B. Bradbury opened the New York Normal Musical Institute in April of 1853 in New York City. Each term lasted about three months and provided the first long-term preparation program for singing-school masters, church choir directors, private instructors, and school music teachers in the United States. Students at the institute studied pedagogy, voice culture, music theory, and choral literature and had the opportunity to take private lessons with prominent musicians and teachers. The Normal Musical Institute relocated to North Reading, Massachusetts, in 1856 and, in 1860, began meeting in various cities throughout the country. In 1872, the school became the National Normal Musical Institute and continued under this name until its final season in Elmira, New York, in 1885. This study was designed to examine the history of this institution in relation to its origin, details of operation, pedagogy and curriculum, prominent students and faculty, and influence on music education. Data included articles from music periodicals and newspapers, pamphlets and catalogs from the institution, biographies of prominent participants, and other primary and secondary sources.

Resumen
Protocols in international law seem to be proliferating. Examples of official protocols at international law abound, from the 1967 Stockholm Protocol Regarding Developing Countries (amending the Berne Convention on copyright), to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on climate change, to the recent Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing in 2010. But what exactly is a “protocol” compared to other international legal instruments, such as declarations and treaties? And why does there seem to be a flurry of new protocols today, in domains as vast as intellectual property and indigenous people's rights? On 19 August a new “working group” convened at the New York University School of Law to begin to study protocols, especially with an eye toward their use as a tool to protect indigenous cultural property—hence, the term “cultural protocols.” The working group is the brainchild of Dr. Jane Anderson of the University of Massachusetts and Professor Barton Beebe of the New York University School of Law.

Resumen
This paper examines the influence of the Berlin model on psychoanalytic education in New York through the person of Sandor Rado, who was recruited from Berlin to become the first Education Director at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute in 1931, and later went on to found the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. While the basic elements of the so-called tripartite model of psychoanalytic education were adopted in principle in New York prior to Rado's arrival, he had an enormous impact on the development and implementation of that curriculum, while attempting to modify it both theoretically and clinically, and became one of the focal points of the controversies that led to the break-up of that institute. He also sought to expand ties to American medicine and psychiatry and to research in general.

China Eastern Airlines, headquartered in the People's Republic of China, has been listed and traded on the New York Stock Exchange since 1997. In its 2005 annual report, China Eastern Airlines presents two sets of financial statements: one prepared under People's Republic of China accounting regulations, and a second set prepared under International Financial Reporting Standards. In addition, as a listed company on the New York Stock Exchange, China Eastern Airlines files Form 20-F with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. This filing includes a limited reconciliation of net income and net assets from International Financial Reporting Standards to United States' generally accepted accounting principles. Your job is to examine these financial statements, explore any differences noted between each of the financial statements and U.S. GAAP, and highlight some issues to be included in a financial analysis of China Eastern Airlines for possible inclusion in an investment portfolio.

Although there are many cities that can claim to have been the incubator of modern neurological surgery, the rise of this surgical subspecialty in New York City in the late 19th and early 20th century mirrors what was occurring around the world. The first confirmed brain tumor operation in the US was performed there in 1887. The author describes the role of several pioneers in the development of neurological surgery. Charles Elsberg was the first dedicated neurological surgeon in New York City and was instrumental in the development of the Neurological Institute and the careers of several other notable neurosurgeons.

Resumen
The article discusses the role of Polish and Polish diaspora organizations in the USA, and the role of their archives, libraries, and museum deposits in the study of the first years of the independent Polish state. The most important ones, created in the USA in the 19th and the 20th century by Polish immigrants, are the Józef Piłsudski Institute of America (located in New York), the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America (located in New York), the Polish Army Veterans’ Association in America (located in New York), the Polish Museum of America (located in Chicago), the Polish Archive in the Polish Catholic Mission in Orchard Lake near Detroit, and the Polish Music Center in Los Angeles. The key role in the study of the restoration of the Polish state in 1918-1923 plays the Józef Piłsudski Institute of America, established on 4 July 1943 as a descendant of the Institute for Research into the Modern Polish History functioning in Warsaw between 1923 and 1939. The institute holds the so-called Belvedere Archives, saved in 1939 from Warsaw and taken from Europe to New York. It contains the documents of the Adjutancy Commander in Chief from the years 1918-1922, illustrating the struggle for the borders of the restored Polish state; documents of the Ukrainian Military Mission, showing Polish-Ukrainian cooperation in the face of the threat from Bolshevik Russia; documents from three Silesian uprisings, and archives of well-known supporters of Piłsudski, e.g. General Julian Stachiewicz and Marshal Rydz-Śmigły. Other additional sources from the years 1918-1923 are stored by Polish diaspora institutions, including priceless and understudied documents concerning the prominent composer, diplomat, and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski, as well as unique materials concerning Polish volunteers from the USA fighting along with General Józef Haller’s so-called Blue Army.

Resumen
Research in media diplomacy often concluded that media took a pro-government stance in covering foreign affairs. This study tested this finding by content analysing the coverage of the Hong Kong 1997 issue by the New York Times, the Times of Britain and the People's Daily of China. The data indicated that the two western newspapers departed significantly from their governments’ respective positions on the issue, while the People's Daily has followed Beijing's stance on the issue all along. The result challenged the viewpoint of ‘media as governments’ cheerleaders’. A more dynamic approach to media diplomacy research is suggested.
