Resumen
Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (Nelumbonaceae) a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine (common name: lotus), is a perennial, large and rhizomatous aquatic herb most prevalent in South India. Preliminary phytochemical screening of both white and pink Nelumbo nucifera flowers revealed the presence of phytochemical constituents (flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols etc,). Hence, an attempt has been made to screen the effect of Nelumbo nucifera flowers (both types) on platelet aggregation. The antiplatelet activity of hydroethanolic extract of both types of flowers was studied using platelet-rich plasma in different concentrations (100-500µg/ml). Both white and pink Nelumbo nucifera flower extracts showed dose-dependent effective antiplatelet activity with maximum activity at 500µg/ml concentration; prevention of platelet aggregation was 50% of that achieved with standard aspirin. Furthermore, the antiplatelet activity of white flowers was relatively high (p<0.05; ANOVA) compared to pink flowers. In conclusion, these observations suggest that both varieties of Nelumbo nucifera flower extracts exert different levels of inhibitory action on platelets in vitro (secretion and platelet aggregation suppression) due to differences in phytochemical content (alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, phytosteroids, glycosides and saponins).

Resumen
Background: Herbal treatment has paid much attention in the world over the past decades. Nelumbo nucifera is used all over the world as a medicinal plant. It is an aquatic perennial plant belonging to the Nelumbonaceae family. The protective effects of Nelumbo nucifera are due to the active ingredients present in it. The study was conducted to evaluate the protective effects of Nelumbo nucifera seeds against hepatotoxicity caused by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats. Methodology: Eighteen Wistar Albino rats were allotted into three groups (n=6), control group, CCl4 treated group given CCl4 0.8 ml/kg body weight subcutaneously twice a week, CCl4 + N. Nucifera treated group given CCl4 0.8 ml/kg body weight 2 times a week subcutaneously and also given Nelumbo nucifera extract (200 mg/kg body weight) orally through gavage daily. After 28 days of the experiment, serum samples were taken for estimation of enzyme activities and liver tissue samples were collected for evaluation of antioxidant enzyme levels. Results: It was observed that liver weight increased in the CCl4 treated group while liver weight decreased in CCl4 + N. Nucifera treated group. CCl4 administration significantly raises the transaminase levels such as Aspartate transaminase (AST) (p<0.01), Aspartate transaminase (ALT) (p<0.05), and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (p<0.05) whereas CCl4 + N. Nucifera treated group serum transaminases are reduced. Antioxidant activities such as Catalase (p>0.05), Glutathione (GSH) (p>0.05) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p=0.05) decreased in the CCl4 treated group. Significant elevation of antioxidant enzymes; Catalase (p<0.05), GSH (p<0.05) and SOD (p>0.05) in CCl4 + N. Nucifera treated group. Serum Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (p<0.05) significantly raised in the CCl4 hepatotoxic group compared to the control group. A decreased MDA levels were observed in the CCl4 + N. Nucifera treated group, indicating its potential to counteract the harmful effects of CCl4. Conclusion: This study suggests that Nelumbo nucifera seeds have overcome CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity by their antioxidant effects.

Resumen
Objective: To perform the pharmacognostical screening and determination of antioxidant activity of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn ethanol seed extract by different in vitro models. Methods: The different pharmacognostical parameters were evaluated as per standard protocols with some modifications. The various concentrations of ethanol seed extract of Nelumbo nucifera were evaluated for antioxidant activity using the standard in vitro methods like hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging assay, nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assay, reducing power capacity assessment, β-Carotene bleaching assay, ferric thiocyanate method (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) assay. Results: Extractive values, ash values and moisture content values of Nelumbo nucifera were found to be as per the IP 2007 and Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia standard. Among the four extracts viz. Petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and aqueous, the ethanol extract showed significant antioxidant activity. The ethanol seed extract of Nelumbo nucifera (NNSE) exhibited high antioxidant activity (IC50 = 12.65 µg/ml) in 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryldydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. In FTC method the absorbance of NNSE increased slowly, which shows strong antioxidant ability. The thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the extract revealed 6 spots with the Rf values 0.41, 0.47, 0.59, 0.65, 0.67, 0.74 with the solvent system of toluene: ethyl acetate: formic acid (5:4:0.5, v/v/v). The high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) revealed the spots at Rf values 0.65 and 0.68. These fractions obtained by preparative TLC also confirmed the same. Conclusion: The present investigation suggested that the NNSE has significant antioxidant activity. These results clearly indicate that Nelumbo nucifera is effective against free radical mediated diseases, thus replacing the synthetic ones.

Resumen
Nelumbo nucifera is a medicinal herb widely distributed in Thailand which possesses its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The aims of this study were to investigate the antimicrobial effects and to develop the formulations containing Nelumbo nucifera crude extracts. The crude extracts of each part of the plants, petals, pollens, receptacles and stalks were separately obtained using 95% w/w ethyl alcohol and then subjected to the phytochemical studies. The total phenolic content was quantified by using Folin-ciocalteu colorimetric method, and the antibacterial features against Staphylococcus aureus was also evaluated. The nanoemulsions incorporated with Nelumbo nucifera crude extracts were thereafter formulated. The results showed that saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids and coumarins found in petals was 184.30 ± 0.50 mg GAE/g total phenolic content which was 4-fold higher than those found in the other part of the plants. Moreover, the crude extract from petals exhibited the activity against S. aureus as indicated by the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 100 mg/mL. Moreover, the good stability of nanoemulsions consisting of 0.05% w/w petal extract was observed displaying a particle size of 400 ± 139 nm, a zeta potential of -8.09 ± 1.04 mV, and a pH value of 5.87 ± 0.07. Owing to the antimicrobial test against S.aureus, the inhibition percentage of nanoemulsions was 80.35 ± 0.106. Accordingly, this study provides the increasing of antimicrobial properties of Nelumbo nucifera crude extract when preparing into the nanoemulsions formulation. In addition, this finding could raise the value of Nelumbo nucifera which could be utilized as an alternative active ingredient for the treatment of skin bacterial infection.

Solar ultraviolet (sUV) radiation remains a major cause of skin aging. Nelumbo nucifera (lotus) is a well-known edible plant widely grown in Asia, including Korea, China, and Japan. The lotus consists of flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds, and all parts reportedly possess nutritional and medical values. Traditionally, lotus flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds have been used as antidiarrheal agents, diuretics, antipyretics, and antimicrobial and antihyperlipidemic agents. In addition, the Nelumbo nucifera lotus embryo has been shown to possess sedative and antipyretic properties and can relieve hemostatic thirst and treat eye diseases. Recently, Nelumbo nucifera lotus flower extract has been widely used in cosmetics due to its ability to reduce wrinkles and its whitening effects. Numerous cosmetics using Nelumbo nucifera lotus embryo extracts are commercially available. However, the active components of Nelumbo nucifera remain elusive. Lotusine is a phytochemical and soluble alkaloid found in lotus embryos. Herein, we examined the anti-wrinkle effect of lotusine using sUV-exposed human keratinocytes. We observed that lotusine reduced sUV-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression and modulated transcriptional activities of activator protein (AP)-1 and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). sUV-induced AP-1 and NF-κB activity could be activated via multiple signal transduction cascades, including the p38 MAPK, JNK, ERK1/2, and Akt pathways in the skin. Lotusine inhibited the MEK1/2-ERK1/2-p90RSK, MKK3/6-p38, and Akt-p70S6K pathways. Overall, our findings suggest that lotusine has potential benefits related to MMP-1 expression and skin aging following sUV exposure. Hence, the lotus can be developed as a valuable functional food and cosmetic material.

Resumen
Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (Family: Nelumbonaceae), commonly known as lotus, is an aquatic perennial plant. The lotus leaves are used to treat fever, hematemesis, hyperlipidaemia and obesity. The leaves are rich in alkaloids such as nuciferine, roemerine, pronuciferine and N-nornuciferine, which are responsible for biological activity of leaf. In the present work, rapid and efficient flash chromatographic process for selective isolation of nuciferine from Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn was developed. The rate of extraction and purity of nuciferine depends upon the solvent used for extraction and optimized chromatographic conditions. Methanol was found to be best solvent for highest possible recovery of the nuciferine from Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. Flash chromatography, also known as medium pressure chromatography, is used to speed up the flow of solvent, which decreases the time needed to purify the sample. The purified sample of nuciferine was then characterized by UV spectroscopy, HPTLC and HPLC-MS.

Resumen
Hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic and aqueous extracts (200 and 400 mg/kg b.w.) of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. (NNE and NNA respectively) was evaluated by paracetamol and Isoniazid-rifampicine (INH-RMP) induced hepatotoxicity models. In paracetamol induced hepatoxicity model, NNA 400 and NNE 400 produced significant (p<0.005) reduction in SGOT level when compared to that of control group. Treatment with NNE 200, NNE 400 and NNA 400 produced significant reduction (p<0.01) in SGPT levels when compared to that of control group. SALP levels were significantly (p<0.001) reduced in animals treated with Silymarin (standard), ethanolic and aqueous extracts at both doses when compared to that of control. In INH-RMP induced hepatotoxicity model, significant (p<0.001) reduction in SGOT levels was produced in animals treated with NNA 200 and 400, NNE 200 and 400, when compared to control group animals. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Nelumbo nucifera at both doses produced significant (p<0.05 and 0.001 respectively) decrease in the SGPT and SALP levels when compared with control group. Hepatoprotective activity was found to be dose dependent. Significant hepatoprotective activity produced by ethanolic & aqueous extracts of Nelumbo nucifera may be a consequence of synergistic effect of the constituents present in the extracts namely, β-sitosterol and flavonoids (kaempferol, quercetin etc.) The results suggest that the ethanolic and aqueous extracts (NNE and NNA) of Nelumbo nucifera aerial parts possess significant hepatoprotective activity.

Resumen
The aim of the present study is to synthesize silver nanoparticles, using an aqueous floral extract of common Lotus, i.e Nelumbo nucifera. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using UV, TEM, EDX, AFM & XRD. The synthesized AgNPs were confirmed due to the colour change from colourless to reddish brown just after the addition of the aqueous floral extract of Nelumbo nucifera. The UV results of AgNPs showed the excitation of surface Plasmon resonance band at 427 nm. TEM results showed that the synthesized AgNPs were uniformed; monodispersed, spherical in shape and the particle size were found to be 77.81 ± 3.54 nm. EDX spectrum of AgNPs confirms strong signals from Ag (64%) and other elements such as C, O and Cl. The morphology of the synthesized AgNPs by AFM analysis resembled the TEM micrograph. The crystalline nature of the AgNPs was confirmed by XRD. The present study concludes that the aqueous floral extract of Nelumbo nucifera could be used as an effective reducing agent for the synthesis of AgNP. The green synthesis ofsilver nanoparticles is non-toxic and cost-effective and thus remains to be an alternative method to other physical and chemical reduction methods.

Resumen
Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic perennial plant with essential food, ornamental, and pharmacological value. Growth-regulating factor (GRF) is a transcription factor (TF) family that plays an important role in regulating the growth and development of plants. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the GRF family in N. nucifera was performed, and its role in N. nucifera development was studied. A total of eight GRF genes were identified in the N. nucifera genome. Phylogenetic analysis divided the 38 GRF genes into six clades, while the NuGRFs only contained five clades. The analyses of gene structures, motifs, and cis-acting regulatory elements of the GRF gene family were performed. In addition, the chromosome location and collinearity were analyzed. The expression pattern based on transcriptomic data and real-time reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that the GRF genes were expressed in multiple organs and were abundant in actively growing tissues, and the expression levels decreased as the age of N. nucifera increased. Then, 3D structures of the NuGRF proteins were predicted by homology modeling. Finally, the subcellular localization of GRF1 was ascertained in the tobacco leaf through a vector. Therefore, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the GRF TF family in N. nucifera.

Resumen
The present research was conducted for quantitative study and diversity analyses of aquatic macrophytes dwelling littoral zone of Jagadishpur reservoir, Kapilvastu district in three seasons, as winter (December), summer (April), and rainy (August). Altogether 58 species of macrophytes were recorded in study site, of which highest number of species (54) was occupied by angiosperms followed by three species of pteridophytes and one species of alga. These macrophytes varied in different morphological groups, viz., emergent, submerged, and rooted-floating leaf type. Maximum number of species were represented by emergents (39) followed by rooted-floating leaf type (12) and submerged (7) macrophytes. There was distinct seasonal variation in the distribution of macrophytes: based on importance value index, Nelumbo nucifera (IVI = 22.87), Scripus sp. (IVI = 28.01), Ipomoea carnea (IVI = 24.67) and Typha angustifolia (IVI = 29.01) were dominant in the winter; Nelumbo nucifera (IVI = 20.05), Cynodon dactylon (IVI = 20.07) and Ipomoea carnea (IVI = 21.17) were dominant in the summer and Nelumbo nucifera (IVI = 23.8) and Scripus sp. (IVI =25.56) were dominant in the rainy season. The highest species diversity (H’) of macrophytes was observed during summer (3.451), followed by rainy season (3.135) and winter (3.008). The luxuriant growth of aquatic macrophytes evidenced the highly productive nature of the lake, while the dominance of emergents among the growth forms indicates the encroachment of littoral vegetation, indicating a successional trend toward marsh meadow.

Resumen
In the firm belief that the world needs green, renewable and more efficient energy resources, the present paper is concerned with developing a new design for horizontal-axis wind-turbine (HAWT) blades. The flower of Nelumbo nucifera (Sacred Lotus) was the motive for the present design of a three-blade wind turbine. Nelumbo Nucifera flower has an aerodynamically appropriate structure, which qualifies the flower to be the nature-inspiration for the present research. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was applied in order to ensure the ability and eligibility of the proposed solution and estimate real world's results. The performance of the blade airfoil can be improved by applying the Lotus flower's structural design and modifying the blade straightening. The experimental findings demonstrated performance enhancement by 31.7% compared to NACA 2412 airfoil.

Resumen
Several aquatic macrophytes such as Colocasia esculenta, Eleocharis dulcis, Nelumbo nucifera, Sagittaria sagittifolia, Trapa bispinosa, and Typha angustifolia possessed carbohydrate mainly in their storage and reproductive parts. Starch morphology, total starch, and amylose content of these six freshwater plant species were determined. Their functional properties, i.e., starch crystallinity, thermal properties, and rheological behaviour were assessed. Large starch granules were in N. nucifera rhizome (>15 μm), medium-sized was N. nucifera seed (8-18 μm), while the rest of the starches were small starch granules (<8 μm). Shapes of the starch granules varied from oval and irregular with centric hilum to elongated granules with the eccentric hilum. Eleocharis dulcis corm starch had significantly higher total starch content (90.87%), followed by corms of C. esculenta (82.35%) and S. sagittifolia (71.71%). Nelumbo nucifera seed starch had significantly higher amylose content (71.45%), followed by T. angustifolia pollen (36.47%). In comparison, the waxy starch was in N. nucifera rhizome (7.63%), T. bispinosa seed (8.83%), C. esculenta corm (10.61%), and T. angustifolia rhizome (13.51%). Higher resistant starch was observed mostly in rhizomes of N. nucifera (39.34%)>T. angustifolia (37.19%) and corm parts of E. dulcis (37.41%)>S. sagittifolia (35.09%) compared to seed and pollen starches. The XRD profiles of macrophytes starches displayed in all the corms and N. nucifera seed had A-type crystallinity. The T. bispinosa seed had CA-type, whereas the rest of the starches exhibited CB-type crystallinity. Waxy starches of C. esculenta corm had higher relative crystallinity (36.91%) and viscosity (46.2 mPa s) than regular starches. Based on thermal properties, high-amylose of N. nucifera seed and T. angustifolia pollen resulted in higher gelatinization enthalpy (19.93 and 18.66 J g-1, respectively). Starch properties showed equally good potential as commercial starches in starch-based food production based on their starch properties and functionality.

Resumen
Optimal nitrogen (N) supply significantly increases the starch content, components, and yield of Nelumbo nucifera. However, the underlying transcriptional mechanism and starch accumulation under dose-dependent nitrogen fertilizer are poorly understood. In this study, we found that the optimal nitrogen fertilizer (N2, 30 kg/667 m2) was more beneficial to improve the stomatal conductance (Gs), leaf intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr), net photosynthetic rates (Pn), chlorophyll content, starch content, and plot yield. What is more, N2-fertilizer treatment induced a higher number of starch granule, AP2 content, and RVA curve peaks. Then, the transcriptomic analyses performed in control (CK) and N2-fertilizer treatment (N2) showed that the expressions of many differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were significantly induced by N2. KEGG and GO enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs were significantly enriched in biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, carbon metabolism, carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms, plant hormone signal transduction, and starch and sucrose metabolisms, suggesting that nitrogen fertilizer induced alterations of photosynthesis- and starch accumulation-related gene expression profiles. Finally, six photosynthesis-related genes and fourteen starch synthesis-related genes were confirmed to be required for starch accumulation in the Nelumbo nucifera development. qPCR analysis of six starch accumulation-related genes demonstrated the accuracy of the transcriptome. Hence, our study provides valuable resource for future studies on molecular mechanisms underlying starch accumulation in Nelumbo nucifera rhizome under N-fertilizer treatment.

Resumen
Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.; N. nucifera) is a common ingredient in traditional medicine and Thai recipes. Its petal is an agricultural waste from stamen production. There are limitations in the used and pharmacological data of the petals resulting in more petals waste. The aims of this study were to investigate the phytochemical contents, antioxidant activity, and potential effects on sperm viability of aqueous (NAE) and ethanolic extracts (NEE) of both red and white N. nucifera petals. The white NAE had the highest total phenolics content, total tannins content and maximal antioxidant activity. The white NEE had the highest concentration of total flavonoids. Quercetin was a major flavonoid and was found in the aqueous extracts. Both red and white of NAE in the range of 0.22 to 1.76 mg/mL increased sperm viability. The white NAE was prominent in phytochemical content, antioxidant activity, and both red and white NAE effectively increased rat sperm viability in the in vitro model. The white NAE enhanced sperm viability by decreasing oxidative stress. It might be suggested that the N. nucifera petals have benefits for sperm viability health promotion and may increase the economic value of agricultural waste.

Resumen
Tau protein and Aβ-amyloid have been studied as pathological aggregations, which form neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s disease brain. Tau protein plays a critical role in neuron that binds to microtubules and assists with their formation and stabilization. However, unbinding of hyperphosphorylated tau and microtubules leads to unstable and disintegrating state of neuron. The free tau proteins form neurofibrillary tangles. The purpose of this study is to screen in vitro the the tau-aggregation inhibitory activity of nine methanol extracts of Psidium guajava leaf, Nelumbo nucifera leaf; wild Ipomoea aquatic, Cleome rutidosperma aerial parts, Artocarpus altilis leaf, cultivated Ipomoea aquatic, Centella asiatica leaf, Mimosa pudica L. aerial parts, Nelumbo nucifera seed pod collected in the Mekong Delta. Nine herbs were collected, dried and extracted with methanol. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of methanol extracts was measured by Thioflavin T assay at various concentrations. Silica gel column chromatography was employed to fractionate the Psidium guajava leaf crude extract. Nine methanol extracts were proved to reduce the tau aggregation in vitro. Extracts from leaves of Psidium guajava, Artocarpus altilis and Nelumbo nucifera impressively inhibited the tau aggregation with IC50 at 0.39 mg/mL, 1.05 mg/mL and 1.24 mg/mL, respectively. Methylene blue was used as a positive control, with IC50 at 1.35 μM. The five examined fractions of guava leaf were proved to inhibit the tau aggregation ranging from 33.70 % to 48.49 %, except the 100 % of hexane fraction showed almost no effect on the tau aggregation inhibitor.
