The negative multinomial distribution appears in many areas of applications such as polarimetric image processing and the analysis of longitudinal count data. In previous studies, general formulas for the falling factorial moments and cumulants of the negative multinomial distribution were obtained. However, despite the availability of the moment generating function, no comprehensive formulas for the moments have been calculated thus far. This paper addresses this gap by presenting general formulas for both central and non-central moments of the negative multinomial distribution. These formulas are expressed in terms of binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the second kind. Utilizing these formulas, we provide explicit expressions for all central moments up to the fourth order and all non-central moments up to the eighth order.

The current work investigates the behavior and strength of T-shaped cross section ring deep beams through a Finite element parametric study. Currently, ring diameter, loading type, concrete compressive strength and number of supports are taken into consideration. It is found that increasing ring diameter of beam by 12.5-25% leads to increase the maximum positive moment, maximum negative moment, maximum torsional moment and midspan deflection by 1.1-2.2%, 2.2-4.3%, 3-6% and 16-33%, respectively, while the load ultimate capacity increases by 11-17%. The positive and torsional moments at midspan and midspan deflection decrease by 23-36%, 3-11% and 6-14%, respectively when the loading type varies from concentered to full uniformly load over a span length of 33, 50, 67 and 100%, respectively. In a related context, this change in load type leads the negative moment at support and the load ultimate capacity to increase by 2-21% and 6-85%, respectively. The midspan positive moment, negative moment, torsional moment and load ultimate capacity increase by 20.4-71.3%, 20-69.7%, 15.6-43.8% and 21-73%, respectively, whereas deflection decreases by 1.4-11%, when increasing the compressive concrete strength by 45-190%. Finally, it is found that the load ultimate capacity increases by 82-348%, when number of supports increases by 25-100%, while torsional moment, maximum positive moments, maximum negative moments and midspan deflection decrease by 11-50%, 38-76.4%, 38.6-76.8% and 14-39%, respectively due to this increase in the number of supports.

Resumen
Behaviour of precast-prestressed hollow core slabs has been extensively studied when these slabs are subjected to positive bending moments, a practical application typical of hollow core slabs. However, in many projects it may be required to have an overhanging part of the roof to act as a cantilever. In doing so, and using precast-prestressed hollow core slabs, the slabs would be subjected to negative moments, atypical for hollow core slabs. In this paper, the behaviour of precast-prestressed hollow core slabs is experimentally investigated when they are subjected to negative bending moments. A proposed strengthening detail to increase the negative moment resistance of hollow core slabs using bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips is presented. The CFRP strips were bonded to the top side of full-scale precast-prestressed hollow core slabs in the negative moment zone in different configurations. In two of the tested slabs the bond between the prestressing strands and the concrete was initially broken (during casting of the slabs) in the negative moment zone. The slabs with the bonded CFRP strips were tested to failure and the load–deflection behaviour was recorded. The results of the tests are presented and the strength enhancement of the hollow core slabs using the proposed technique is reported. The increase in the negative moment resistance of the CFRP-bonded hollow core slabs experimentally determined is also compared with the CSA-S806-02 prediction for the moment resistance of concrete elements with bonded CFRP strips.Key words: carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips, hollow core slab, flexure strengthening, prestressed concrete, precast slabs, prestressing strands.

This paper analyzes the stochastic stability of a damped Mathieu oscillator subjected to a parametric excitation of the form of a stationary Gaussian process, which may be both white and coloured. By applying deterministic and stochastic averaging, two Itô’s differential equations are retrieved. Reference is made to stochastic stability in moments. The differential equations ruling the response statistical moment evolution are written by means of Itô’s differential rule. A necessary and sufficient condition of stability in the moments of orderris that the matrixArof the coefficients of the ODE system ruling them has negative real eigenvalues and complex eigenvalues with negative real parts. Because of the linearity of the system the stability of the first two moments is the strongest condition of stability. In the case of the first moments (averages), critical values of the parameters are expressed analytically, while for the second moments the search for the critical values is made numerically. Some graphs are presented for representative cases.

AbstractIn the present note we consider the Hipp approximation to the convolution of a finite number of probability distributions on the non-negative integers. It is shown that the moment up to and including order r of the rth order approximation are equal to the corresponding moments of the exact distribution. We also give a relation between the exact and approximated (r + 1)th order moments and indicate how similar relations can be obtained for higher order moments.

We provide a recursive formula for the computation of moments of distributions belonging to a subclass of the exponential family. This subclass includes important cases as the binomial, negative binomial, Poisson, gamma and normal distribution, among others. The recursive formula provides a procedure to sequentially calculate the moments using only elementary operations. The approach makes no use of the moment generating function.

Abstract This paper studies restraint moments developing in simple-span precast, prestressed beams made continuous. Methods of evaluating restraint moments produced by creep and differential shrinkage are presented. Shrinkage and creep properties of composite structures, beam and deck parts were tested and compared to values defined according to Eurocode models. Finally, the restraint moments were calculated with both material models for the two-span parking deck structure. The study confirmed the findings of previous studies: that the methods that are used overestimate the negative restraint moment produced by differential shrinkage.

In this article, we bring the study of meaning together with the emerging field of study focusing on the emotions of wonder: wonder, enchantment, awe, and being moved. It is in meaningful moments that these two meet, and in our empirical study, we used the emotions of wonder as a lens to investigate meaningful moments. We applied a novel intervention, the Wonderful Life question, to elicit narratives of meaningful moments from 100 participants varying in age, profession, and social status. Using characteristics of wonder retrieved from the wonder literature to qualitatively analyze these narratives, we identified five types of meaningful moments: opening up to life, facing the precarity of life, celebrations, countering the negative, and familiar routines. The study deepens insight in the way meaning is discovered in different types of meaningful moments. It supports the premise that there is potential meaning in any moment in life, and the mind-set of wonder enabling the discovery of meaning. Finally, it pleads for the use of the Wonderful Life question as a means to elicit a wide spectrum of meaningful moments.

We studied age-related changes in the performance of maximal and accurate submaximal force and moment production tasks. Elderly and young subjects pressed on six dimensional force sensors affixed to a handle with a T-shaped attachment. The weight of the whole system was counterbalanced with another load. During tasks that required the production of maximal force or maximal moment by all of the digits, young subjects were stronger than elderly. A greater age-related deficit was seen in the maximal moment production tests. During maximal force production tests, elderly subjects showed larger relative involvement of the index and middle fingers; they moved the point of thumb force application upward (toward the index and middle fingers), whereas the young subjects rolled the thumb downward. During accurate force/moment production trials, elderly persons were less accurate in the production of both total moment and total force. They produced higher antagonistic moments, i.e., moment by fingers that acted against the required direction of the total moment. Both young and elderly subjects showed negative covariation of finger forces across repetitions of a ramp force production task. In accurate moment production tasks, both groups showed negative covariation of two components of the total moment: those produced by the normal forces and those produced by the tangential forces. However, elderly persons showed lower values of the indexes of both finger force covariation and moment covariation. We conclude that age is associated with an impaired ability to produce both high moments and accurate time profiles of moments. This impairment goes beyond the well-documented deficits in finger and hand force production by elderly persons. It involves worse coordination of individual digit forces and of components of the total moment. Some atypical characteristics of finger forces may be viewed as adaptive to the increased variability in the force production with age.

Abstract Motivation The Chemical Master Equation (CME) is a set of linear differential equations that describes the evolution of the probability distribution on all possible configurations of a (bio-)chemical reaction system. Since the number of configurations and therefore the dimension of the CME rapidly increases with the number of molecules, its applicability is restricted to small systems. A widely applied remedy for this challenge is moment-based approaches which consider the evolution of the first few moments of the distribution as summary statistics for the complete distribution. Here, we investigate the performance of two moment-estimation methods for reaction systems whose equilibrium distributions encounter fat-tailedness and do not possess statistical moments. Results We show that estimation via stochastic simulation algorithm (SSA) trajectories lose consistency over time and estimated moment values span a wide range of values even for large sample sizes. In comparison, the method of moments returns smooth moment estimates but is not able to indicate the non-existence of the allegedly predicted moments. We furthermore analyze the negative effect of a CME solution’s fat-tailedness on SSA run times and explain inherent difficulties. While moment-estimation techniques are a commonly applied tool in the simulation of (bio-)chemical reaction networks, we conclude that they should be used with care, as neither the system definition nor the moment-estimation techniques themselves reliably indicate the potential fat-tailedness of the CME’s solution.

In this article, a new flexible probability density function with three parameters is proposed for modeling asymmetric data (positive and negative) with different types of kurtosis (mesokurtic, leptokurtic and platykurtic). Some of its statistical and reliability properties, including hazard rate function, moments, moment generating function, incomplete moments, mean deviations, moment of the residual life, moment of the reversed residual life, and order statistics are derived. Its hazard rate function can be either constant, increasing-constant, decreasing-constant, U shape, upside down shape or upside down-U shape. Seven classical estimation methods are considered to estimate the unknown model parameters. Monte Carlo simulation experiments are performed to compare the performance of the seven different estimation methods. Finally, a distinctive asymmetric real data application is analyzed for illustrating the flexibility of the new model.

Censored negative exponential distribution is treated as a mixed type distribution having two distinct types of components. These components give arise to continuous as well as discrete random variables. Moments (mean and variance) are derived for the doubly censored, right censored, and left censored negative exponential distributions (NEDs) along with separations of continuous and discrete components and their respective means and variances. Moments obtained for the censored NEDs are then compared to the corresponding values of the uncensored NEDs and the changes in the proportions of the moments due to censoring are examined and assessed. Plots of moments of the censored distributions including a three dimensional scatter plot are presented considering different hypothetical values at which censoring may occur. These distributions are widely applied in fitting and modeling failure time data in survival and reliability analyses. The stiffness and damping moments that are transmitted by intervertebral joints during sinusoidal bending were determined in the blue marlin, Makaira nigricans Lacépède. Using a dynamic bending machine, the angular stiffness (N m rad−1) and damping coefficient (kg m2 rad−2 s−1) of the intervertebral joints were measured over a range of bending frequencies, amplitudes and positions along the backbone. Angular stiffness increases with increasing bending amplitude, but, for some joints, the rate at which it changes with increasing bending frequency is negative. The precaudal intervertebral joints are less stiff than the caudal joints. The damping coefficient, which also shows regional variation, does not change with amplitude but does decrease with increasing bending frequency in joint positions three and five. Stiffness moments along the vertebral column, given the same amount of bending at each joint, are always greater than the damping moments. However, damping moments increase by an order of magnitude with an increase in bending frequency from 0.5 to 5.0Hz. The stiffness and damping moments determine the work that an external moment, such as muscle, must do over a complete cycle of bending. The external moments and work needed to bend an intervertebral joint are determined largely by the stiffness moments of the intervertebral joints.

It is shown that the hypergeometric generalized negative binomial distribution has moments of all positive orders, is overdispersed, skewed to the right, and leptokurtic. Also, a three-term recurrence relation for computing probabilities from the considered distribution is given. Application of the distribution to entomological field data is given and its goodness-of-fit is demonstrated.

In this study, field measurements of the bending moments of prestressed concrete (PC) sleepers installed on commercial lines were obtained, and numerical analyses to identify the effects of different parameters on their bending moments were conducted. The bending load capacities of aged PC sleepers collected from commercial lines via bending tests were also determined. According to the field measurement results of the wheel loads and bending moments of the PC sleepers, the measured values were smaller than the design values. In addition, neither the wheel load nor the bending moment depended on train speed. The numerical analysis results indicate that the positive bending moment at the rail seat section is unlikely to exceed the design decompression moment (DDM). However, the negative bending moment at the center section may exceed the DDM if center support is provided with a reduced spring constant under the rail (the “hanging” rail seat section). In addition, the bending moment increased with the rail surface roughness, so the rail should be kept smooth. Moreover, the results of the JIS E 1201 bending tests on the aged PC sleepers showed that the crack generation load and ultimate load decreased gradually with increases in age and passing tonnage. However, all samples satisfied the JIS standard values. Furthermore, the bending moments generated in the PC sleepers during train passage were considerably smaller than the crack generation load and ultimate load during the bending test. Thus, Japanese PC sleepers aged more than 50 years currently satisfy the standard flexural fracture values specified by the JIS, and safety is not immediately compromised.

Nanoparticles are considered potential candidates for a new class of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Negative MRI contrast agents require high magnetic moments. However, if nanoparticles can exclusively induce transverse water proton spin relaxation with negligible induction of longitudinal water proton spin relaxation, they may provide negative contrast MR images despite having low magnetic moments, thus acting as an efficient T2 MRI contrast agent. In this study, carbon-coated paramagnetic dysprosium oxide (DYO@C) nanoparticles (core = DYO = DyxOy; shell = carbon) were synthesized to explore their potential as an efficient T2 MRI contrast agent at 3.0 T MR field. Since the core DYO nanoparticles have an appreciable (but not high) magnetic moment that arises from fast 4f-electrons of Dy(III) (6H15/2), the DYO@C nanoparticles exhibited an appreciable transverse water proton spin relaxivity (r2) with a negligible longitudinal water proton spin relaxivity (r1). Consequently, they acted as a very efficient T2 MRI contrast agent, as proven from negative contrast enhancements seen in the in vivo T2 MR images.

The multifractal analysis of stochastic processes deals with the fine scale properties of the sample paths and seeks for some global scaling property that would enable extracting the so-called spectrum of singularities. In this paper, we establish bounds on the support of the spectrum of singularities. To do this, we prove a theorem that complements the famous Kolmogorov’s continuity criterion. The nature of these bounds helps us to identify the quantities truly responsible for the support of the spectrum. We then make several conclusions from this. First, specifying global scaling in terms of moments is incomplete due to possible infinite moments, both of positive and negative orders. The divergence of negative order moments does not affect the spectrum in general. On the other hand, infinite positive order moments make the spectrum of self-similar processes nontrivial. In particular, we show that the self-similar stationary increments process with the nontrivial spectrum must be heavy-tailed. This shows that for determining the spectrum it is crucial to capture the divergence of moments. We show that the partition function is capable of doing this and also propose a robust variant of this method for negative order moments.

Abstract Throughout a marriage, couples will share countless ordinary moments together, such as laughing together or engaging in leisure activities. Although these moments may seem trivial in isolation, research suggests that accumulating small positive moments together helps couples build emotional capital, which serves as an essential resource for protecting marriages from the harmful consequences of relationship challenges. This study explored whether emotional capital may buffer couples not only from the negative effects of relational stressors, but also from the negative effects of life stressors encountered outside the relationship in a sample of younger (age 30-45) and older (age 60+) married couples. Drawing from theories of socioemotional expertise, we also examined whether the buffering effects of emotional capital may be stronger for older adults. One hundred forty-five couples completed a 21-day daily diary task assessing shared positive experiences with the partner, negative partner behaviors, marital satisfaction, life stress, and mood. Spouses who generally accrued more shared positive moments with their partner across the diary days maintained greater marital satisfaction on days of greater partner negativity compared to spouses who accrued fewer positive moments. Moreover, spouses who generally accrued more shared positive moments with their partner across the diary days also reported lower levels of negative mood on days in which they experienced more life stress compared to spouses who accrued fewer shared positive moments; in both cases, the buffering role of emotional capital was significantly stronger for older adults. All results held when adjusting for relationship length and general marital happiness.
