Resumen
«The Story of the Priest Alexei» (1877) is examined in general less often than other «mysterious stories» by I.S. Turgenev, sometimes remains even not included into this series. Meanwhile, its place among the later short stories by Turgenev is important, several mysteries associate with it. Some scholars compare «The Story…» to the works by N.S. Leskov and F.M. Dostoevsky; others interpret it in terms of mythopoetics and psychoanalysis or in the contexts of hagiographic topics, old Russian bookishness and folklore. Some authors of recent works base their readings on the narratological paradigm.

Thwarted romances between Garrisoned American Soldiers and Young Filipinas, problems of translation in a multilingual contact zone, and the precarious masculine authority of the imperial agent irresistibly drawn to the mysterious women who surround him—these are the subjects of Frank R. Steward's short fiction about the American military occupation of the Philippines. But Steward's perspective as an African American military officer complicates efforts to interpret such familiar colonial scenarios. The stories' formal experimentation makes them a significant discovery in the archives of empire.

Resumen
In this paper, focusing on several articles about monks in Zhiguai (志怪), I examined the changes in the distance between Zhiguai and Seng zhuan (僧傳 Biography of monks). It looked into the records of mysterious actions performed by monks, who, despite being outsiders, became familiar figures, observing the developments in Zhiguai and Seng zhuan. Unlike the criteria for recording monk stories in Seng zhuan, which mainly focused on spiritual aspects, Zhiguai included technical aspects and mysterious events related to ghosts in its records. Therefore, unlike the monastic focus on the maturity of monks in Seng zhuan, even monks who were not high-ranking were documented in Zhiguai during the period of Six Dynasties. In the early Zhiguai, non-Buddhists perceived Buddhism as a mysterious existence, recording the peculiarities of Buddhism. As a result, Zhiguai took on a new development. Buddhism ceased to be an exotic 'ritual' and began to be recognized as Buddhism itself. Moreover, by being associated with influential individuals or monks affiliated with temples, the stories of monks in Zhiguai were recorded and became part of the materials for Seng zhuan. In this way, by examining the transmission of stories about the mysterious or divine through the intermediary of the 'monk,' we have explored the interrelationship between Zhiguai and Seng zhuan.

Scientists of the Human Genome Project tend to rely on three metaphors to describe their work, each of which implicitly tells much the same story. Whether they claim to interpret the ultimate “book,” to fix a flawed “machine,” or to map a mysterious “wilderness,” they invariably cast the researcher as one who dominates and exploits the Other. This essay, which explores the ways such a story conflicts with feminist values, proposes an alternative.

Resumen
Moral storytelling about urban public life in Odesa in the 1920s is at the center of attention. A key social space is in focus: streets and corners as spaces and as concepts. And a particular storyteller is central: the well-known and yet biographically mysterious feuilletonist for the city's evening newspaper, “Al. Svetlov.” Soviet journalists, like Soviet reality, were expected to offer ideological clarity: a morally unambiguous and teleologically straight story about the death of the past and the birth of a bright and healthy new world. But such temporal and moral (and thus political) consistency was elusive—in the urban spaces where “vestiges” of the old persisted, and in their telling, as observers found it difficult to sustain an unwavering and unambiguous moral orientation. The article asks also how minor and subordinated individuals understood their own lives, suggesting an orientation other than delinquency and pathology.

Resumen
The word Gothic refers back to the Dark ages in England. The Roman civilization was ruined by the Goths who were the barbarians at that time. As a result of the destruction of Roman Empire, the whole civilization underwent ignorance and darkness. Nowadays, the word Gothic has a variety of meaning and applications. Gothic novels portray exaggerated scenes, haunted castles, monsters and vampires. Scottish Gothic literature started after 1800. This paper will focus on one of the Scottish short stories by James Hogg, “The Mysterious Bride”. Some elements of Gothic and grotesque such as transgression of boundaries, suspense, uncanny and supernatural being are discussed within this short story in order to indicate Hogg’s main intention to use Gothic and grotesque elements in “The Mysterious Bride”. Among all the elemnts in Gothic and grotesque, this paper will mainly apply the presence of the opposites, uncanny, abnormal beings and supernatural events to James Hogg’s “The Mysterious Bride”.

Resumen
Abstract This article addresses the persistent anthropocentric bias of archipelagic studies. It asks: What would it mean to invite more-than-human and transspecies perspectives into our theorizations of archipelagoes? This interrogation is addressed by following the meanderings of the eel—famously recognized as “the most mysterious creature in the natural world”—through two Francophone texts arising from the Indian Ocean: the first is Mauritian author Ananda Devi's novella La vie de Joséphin le fou (2003), and the second is Comoran author Ali Zamir's novel Anguille sous roche (2016). Through detailed literary analysis, this article demonstrates that in both prose narratives, the perspectives of marine creatures are crucial to the complete telling of intergenerational violence: in particular, the seemingly “infinite” memory and determination of eels becomes an antidote to the fragmentation caused by human trauma. Additionally, this article argues that in both texts, the anguilliform is not simply a theme but also a method, which allows for novel archipelagic forms of storytelling and memory that are as slippery and sinuous as the animals who inspire it. The eel's anguilliform movement thus becomes a source of stylistic and narrative renewal, which allows both texts to embody commentary on the ethical slipperiness of their narratives, as well as on readers’ positionality and complicity.

The article presents the analysis of the role of epithets in the creation of mysterious atmosphere and awaking the reader’s feeling of fear and disgust in short stories written by H. P. Lovecraft. The peculiar feature of “cosmic horror” in the short stories under analysis is the use of epithets in order to appeal to sensory feelings, which are the powerful tool for the creation of disgusting and terrible images and feelings. By means of interdisciplinary approach, the epithets have been grouped according to the location of sensory receptors into visual, auditory and olfactory. It has been found that visual epithets constitute the dominant group.

Resumen
The purpose of this research is to consider the language used for telling true ghost stories. True ghost stories, that is, those anecdotes initially shared by friends and family describing personal experiences and encounters with paranormal activity, is an unusual genre for storytellers in that it lives within a space that can be seen as both fiction and non-fiction, with specific vocabulary that joins the two genres. The non-fiction part of such a story, as with all non-fiction narratives, relies on the verbatim reporting of an eyewitness account. The fictional part depends on a writer utilizing specific semantic tropes of the ghost story, such as mysterious shadows, unexplained noises and fluctuations in temperature. Bridging these two areas is the language found in the narrative, where a responsible writer employs careful phrasing to relate the story whilst avoiding a vocabulary that endorses unprovable phenomena. For example, I cannot, in good conscience, write: … and then the ghost attacked her. To be honest to my own scepticism, and to the limited evidence usually presented with such stories, I have to write: …and then she claims the ghost attacked her or …and then it appeared the ghost attacked her. Through a critical analysis of existing narratives and an examination of hedging strategies used, this research intends to demonstrate how some writers in this genre maintain their own truthfulness to present a compelling narrative.

Resumen
The detective fiction (tantei shōsetsu) genre is one that came into Japan from the West around the time of the Meiji Restoration (1868), and soon became wildly popular. Again in recent years, detective fiction has experienced a popularity boom in Japan, and there has been an outpouring of new detective fiction books as well as various television and movie adaptations. It is not a revelation that the Japanese detective fiction genre, while rife with imitation and homage to Western works, took a dramatic turn somewhere along the line, away from celebrated models like Poe, Doyle, and Christie, and developed into a unique subgenre of Japanese prose. However, despite its popularity and innovation, Japanese detective fiction has often been categorized as popular literature (taishū bungaku), which is historically disregarded as vulgar and common. My thesis first consists of a brief introductory history oftantei shōsetsugenre in Japan. This includes a discussion of Japanese writers' anxiety concerning imitation of Western forms and their perception of themselves as imposters and imitators. Following this, I examine the ways in whichtantei shōsetsuwriters--particularly Edogawa Ranpo (1894 - 1965), the grandfather of the genre in Japan--began to deviate from the Western model in the 1920's. At the same time, I investigate the bias againsttantei shōsetsuas a vulgar or even pornographic genre. Through a discussion of literary critic Karatani Kōjin's ideas on the construction of depth in literature, I will demonstrate how Edogawa created, through his deviance from the West, a new kind of construction in detective fiction to bring a different sort of depth to what was generally considered merely a popular and shallow genre. This discussion includes a look at the ideas of Tsubouchi Shōyō on writing modern novels, and Japanese conceptions of "pure" (junsui) and "popular" (taishū) literature. Through an examination of several of Edogawa's works and his use of psychology in creating interiority in his characters, I propose that the depth configuration, put forth by Karatani in his critique of canonical modern Japanese literature, is also present in popular fiction, like Edogawa'stantei shōsetsu. When viewed through the lens of Karatani's depth paradigm, we discover how detective fiction and the vulgarity therein may actually have more in common with "pure" fiction created by those writers who followed Shōyō's prescriptions. In the final section of the introduction, I propose a definition of Japanese detective fiction that links Edogawa's works from the 1920's to the contemporary Japanese detective novel After-Dinner Mysteries (Nazotoki wa dinaa no ato de, 2010), by Higashigawa Tokuya. Thus we see that many of the themes and conventions present in Edogawa remain prevalent in contemporary writing. Finally, I present my translation of the first two chapters of After-Dinner Mysteries.

Resumen
Divination is the leitmotif of this essay. I tried to analyze this subjet that the main thinkers and philosophers point out as the key-subject of the neoplatonic sage Giambilico's Treatise On the Mysteries of Egyptians. It is a ten books work and the third one was totally focused on Divination by the Author. Here he refutes and debates Porfirio's objections about the nature, the shapes and the teurgic aims the divination art can have. This essay follows the studying method already used in the Comment of the Book III of the Treatise On the Mysteries of Egyptians: in this way i tried to show up and present a fresco about the wide variety of theories, doctrines and contradictions about this subject and describe an original complete critic structure, that you cannot find in other essays about this theme. The core-subject of this debate is the dissertation of Portirio's theory that we can read in the Letter to Anebo: here the philosopher describes the divination origin as a complete natural origin, based on psyco-physiological mood and inclinations of a typical soothsayer. Giambilico opposes his idea to Portirios's, and he elevates the role of the medium from the soothsayer attitude to the Supernatural, far from a mixture based on the human level and existence.

The thesis considers three treatises of the same title, De corpore et sanguine Domini, on the Eucharist composed in the ninth century by Paschasius Radbertus, Gottschalk of Orbais and Ratramnus of Corbie, analyzing them under two different aspects. In a first part the internal relations and their ties with the theological and philosophical controversies of the period are reconstructed, above all with that of predestination and the virginal birth of Mary. At the end of this analysis a different date, relative to the composition of the treaties, is proposed from the one commonly accepted, valuing a fragment of the Gottschalk treaty testified by a single manuscript in the Royal Library of Brussels. In a second part, starting from a systematic survey of all the biblical and patristic passages mentioned in the three treatises (shown in the tables in the appendix), the exegetical practices implemented in them are taken into consideration, trying to highlight the methodology of authors' work towards their patristic sources. In particular, the analysis of the interpretation of a passage by Ambrose, present in De Mysteriis and in the De sacramentis, which is crucial for the argumentation of each of the texts in question, is carried out.

This paper selects the souls in ‘After-Death Apparitions’ as the theme and through reading and tidying up of the text, focused emphasis on ‘After-Death Apparitions’ in the Mysterious Stories of the Six Dynasties, the reason behind the cause of the development of the story. From the souls in ‘After-Death Apparitions’, to explore their evil doing, the reaction and behavior of others. Through the analysis of the apparitions, the objective of which is to find out the functions played by such type of stories in supernatural novels, understand the desire for life appeal and then explore the core idea of the story and observe the present cultural connotation of the concept and its influence on the later generations. The Six Dynasties, at that time, in addition, to maintain the traditional Confucian concept of destiny also witnessed Buddhism increasing concept of development-thinking. Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism – the three teachings in Chinese Philosophy – were in conflict with each other, the process matured, flourished and accommodated, prompting the Six Dynasties into a religious pluralism of co-existence, in appearance. These factors coupled with the fact that supernatural beliefs had imperceptible influence, brought about the development of ‘After-Death Apparitions’ stories in the Mysterious Stories of the Six Dynasties. In the ‘After-Death Apparitions’ story, the dead through different apparitions, show its dismay of past lives and attachment, expressing what need to be, advising people to do good, revenge, redress and gratitude – five objectives. Resumen
AbstractThis chapter explores Yoruba divination systems as complex systems of patakís meant to aid in the healing process in the dystopian island geographies of Rita Indiana’s La Mucama de Omicunlé. Specifically, the chapter explores this concept through the figure of Olokun, guardian of stories and mysteries of creation who resides at the bottom of the sea. What is more, Olokun provides the stories necessary to reflect upon how we might be transformed by our past, present, and futures at the crossroads of being in diaspora. In this way, the chapter demonstrates the transformative time-space of Olokun as a radical figure of decolonial yearning in order to move away from the replication of colonial racial-gender-sexual-economic violence that has torn apart the fictional, dystopian world time and again in order to repair ourselves and move forward toward a new future of liberation, one that will emerge from the spatio-temporal crossroads opened by the forgotten mysteries of the sea.

This chapter applies both dark karma and cosmic intraspace to several of Ditko’s pre-Comics Code horror and weird suspense stories produced for Charlton Comics in 1953. The readings and contextualization provided in this chapter demonstrate that many of the ethical and moral concerns that appear in Ditko’s later, supposedly Objectivist comics, actually appear long before he became acquainted with Rand’s work. Rather, as this chapter argues, Ditko folded Objectivism into his pre-existing moral and ethical beliefs, which had a distinctly mystical flavor.

Resumen
Abstract This chapter reads Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Legends of the Province House (1838) in conjunction with a series of letters that his later wife Sophia Peabody wrote during her residence as a health tourist on a Cuban plantation during the early 1830s. While Legends has been read primarily through the lens of New England history, Sophia’s reflections on the Cuban scene indirectly informed Hawthorne’s story cycle. Hawthorne’s thematization of the smallpox epidemic of the 1720s resonates with the cholera pandemic of the early 1830s as described by Sophia. The trajectory of the cholera outbreak during the 1830s challenged the assumed tropical origins of this disease and thus upended established etiologies based on climate. The chapter shows how the stories register this transition from climate-based to vector-based etiologies of epidemic diseases and more generally the turn toward a more global and disembodied climate imaginary.

Resumen
Abstract Sarah Orne Jewett’s is so matrifocal that it is easy to forget that it takes its shape from a myth about a daughter living not in one but in two worlds, one mother-defined, the other male-defined; and in fact it is in the second of these worlds that Persephone, like Jewett’s woman writer, spends most of the year. Mysterious, dark, ruled by a sexually powerful male, it is a world that Persephone gladly escapes each June to join her mother, Demeter, in a region of light and renewal. Some versions of the myth stress masculine violence and brutality as the cause of the daughter’s separation from the mother.

Resumen
Abstract There is more to Henry’s Grace, my grandmother, Kathryn’s Mark, Alex Haley’s ancestors, and others whom we love than we will ever know. Earlier I wrote about how, as we live with and remember them, we stand before them as we do before other mysteries in life. They are not like puzzles or problems we can solve or finish. They can always surprise us, show us something more of themselves, challenge or delight us in new ways. We never fully understand or appreciate the complexity of their life stories or the depth of their characters. We are hardly in a better position to know the souls of those who have died than they were. They were unfathomable when alive and will remain so. We know only aspects of their daily lives and life stories. In everyday life with them, we were ordinarily as unselfconsciously absorbed in things, places, experiences, activities, and interactions with others as they were. Only occasionally did we sense beneath the surface of what we could ob-serve how their souls motivated their everyday expressions, gestures, actions, or habits.

Resumen
The article discusses the peculiarities of the disclosure of spiritual and moral content in the "mysterious stories" by I. S. Turgenev (using the example of the story "Faust"). It is noted that in the "mysterious" cycle there is a special poetological means of the category of the fantastic. During the analysis, the content of this category (fantastic images and motives, a special type of character) and its role in highlighting the spiritual and moral aspect of the story "Faust" are revealed.

Resumen
Th e image of the forest or of the woods is deeply implanted in the spiritual life, becoming for centuries a maternal symbol of our people. In most folk tales, the main characters, on their way to becoming, wander through a thick and dark forest, or the forest itself is the destination point, where the dramatic denouement, an unpredictable meeting or a love idyll will take place. A possible classifi cation of the forest motif in cinematographic art is proposed from the perspective of various artistic functions.Th e works of the researcher-folklorist Vladimir Propp on the structure of folk tales point directly to the image of the forest as an inevitable space for the unfolding of the action. We fi nd this space of transformations especially in the screening or interpretation of cult stories/fairy tales. We will elucidate this space, represented in various interpretations through the cinematic language. Our interest extends to fi lms, which represent the interpretation of faity tales in European cinema. A separate chapter will be dedicated to fi lms-tales, where the image of the forest is one full of mysteries, populated by the most diverse, equally mysterious characters, whose contact with human characters oft en constitutes the dramaturgical axis of the fi lm.

Resumen
Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.
