Resumen
Mental workload (MWL) can affect human performance and is considered critical in the design and evaluation of complex human-machine systems. While numerous physiological measures are used to assess MWL, there appears no consensus on their validity as effective agents of MWL. This study was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the use of physiological measures of MWL and to synthesize empirical evidence on the validity of the measures to discriminate changes in MWL. A systematical literature search was conducted with four electronic databases for empirical studies measuring MWL with physiological measures. Ninety-one studies were included for analysis. We identified 78 physiological measures, which were distributed in cardiovascular, eye movement, electroencephalogram (EEG), respiration, electromyogram (EMG) and skin categories. Cardiovascular, eye movement and EEG measures were the most widely used across varied research domains, with 76%, 66%, and 71% of times reported a significant association with MWL, respectively. While most physiological measures were found to be able to discriminate changes in MWL, they were not universally valid in all task scenarios. The use of physiological measures and their validity for MWL assessment also varied across different research domains. Our study offers insights into the understanding and selection of appropriate physiological measures for MWL assessment in varied human-machine systems.

Resumen
The structural and thermal characterization of milled wood lignin (MWL) prepared from bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) grown in Korea was investigated, and the results were compared with bamboo MWLs from other studies. The C9 formula of the bamboo MWL was C9H7.76O3.23N0.02 (OCH3)1.41. The Mw and Mn of MWL were 13,000 and 4400 Da, respectively, which resulted in a polydispersity index (PDI) of 3.0. The PDI of the prepared MWL was higher than other bamboo MWLs (1.3–2.2), suggesting a broader molecular weight distribution. The structural features of MWL were elucidated using FT-IR spectroscopy and NMR techniques (1H, 13C, HSQC, 31P NMR), which indicate that MWL is of the HGS-type lignin. The major lignin linkages (β-O-4, β-β, β-5) were not different from other bamboo MWLs. The syringyl/guaiacyl ratio, determined from 1H NMR, was calculated as 0.89. 31P NMR revealed variations in hydroxyl content, with a higher aliphatic hydroxyl content in MWL compared to other bamboo MWLs. Thermal properties were investigated through TGA, DSC, and pyrolysis-GC/MS spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The DTGmax of MWL under inert conditions was 287 °C, and the Tg of MWL was 159 °C. Py-GC/MS at 675 °C revealed a syringyl, guaiacyl, p-hydroxyphenyl composition of 17:37:47.

Resumen
This study applies a mathematical linguistic approach to explore word length distribution of Japanese dialects to cluster dialects at a lexical level. Data were extracted from spoken recordings of native speakers from 47 areas. The findings revealed that the further south the area was, the longer the mean word length (MWL) became. In majority of dialects, MWL ranges from one to nine. The Saga dialect has the longest MWL (3.26). Further analysis of the MWL-frequency relationship via the Altmann-fitter reveals that MWL-frequency of all dialects fit more than 30 distribution models, including the binomial and Poisson families.

Resumen
Xylose residue (XR), after diluted acid treatment of corncob, consists of cellulose and lignin. However, structural changes of XR lignin have not been investigated comprehensively, and this has seriously hindered the efficient utilization of lignin. In this study, corncob milled wood lignin (CC MWL), and xylose residue milled wood lignin (XR MWL) were isolated according to the modified milled wood lignin (MWL) method. The structural features of two lignin fractions were thoroughly investigated via fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and two dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) spectroscopy techniques. XR MWL with higher yield and lower bound carbohydrate contents presented more phenolic OH contents than CC MWL due to partial cleavage of β-O-4. Furthermore, the molecular weights of XR MWL were increased, possibly because of condensation of the lignin during the xylose production. A study on antioxidant activity showed that XR lignin had better radical scavenging ability than that of 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-methyl-phenol (BHT) and CC MWL. The results suggested that the lignin in xylose residue, showing great antioxidant properties, has potential applications in food additives.

Resumen
Abstract Objective Preoperative MRI-guided wire localization (MWL) presents challenges to both the physician and patient. In this study, we examined the efficiency and outcome of MRI-guided marker placement followed by mammographic-guided radioactive seed localization (MMP/RSL) as an alternative localization method. The primary outcome parameter was pathology upon excision. The secondary outcome parameters were total procedure time and clinical indication for localization. Methods A retrospective review of a large tertiary cancer center’s breast imaging database was performed. Records of 21 patients with MMP/RSL (24 markers) from August 2013 to January 2019 were compared with 34 patients receiving MWL (48 wires) from January 2016 to January 2019. Multiple factors, including age, prelocalization pathology, postsurgical pathology, concordance, re-excision rates, and total procedure time required for each technique, were compared. Univariate and descriptive statistical analyses were performed. Results Mean patient age in years (MMP/RSL = 54.1 ± 13.1, MWL = 55.1 ± 10.8, P = 0.389), time in MR scanner in minutes (MMP/RSL = 31.7 ± 12.0, MWL = 35.8 ± 13.1, P = 0.678), and postsurgical pathology malignancy rates (MMP/RSL = 71.4%, MWL = 65.7%, P = 0.7715) were similar without statistically significant differences. As expected, the mean total procedure time was slightly longer without a statistically significant difference (47.3 ± 19.8 min versus 35.8 ± 13.1 min, P = 0.922) for the MMP/RSL group. All patients in both groups underwent successful localization with 100% radiologic-pathology concordance. Re-excision rates were lower for the MMP/RSL group (9.5%) versus the MWL group (16.7%); however, they were not found to be statistically significant (P = 0.7104). Conclusion MMP/RSL is a feasible alternative to MWL and may alleviate many challenges presented by MWL. Further studies are needed.

Resumen
Abstract Drivers play a significant role in causing serious accidents, which underscores the need for further investigating the human element in order to improve road safety. Given the predominance of the information processing approach in driver’s behavior research field, an important psychological construct, Mental Workload (MWL), has been introduced to study the behavior of drivers. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of increased MWL on driver behavior and specifically the changes in driver’s Reaction Time (RT) under increased MWL. The experiment conducted in the driving simulator of the Hellenic Institute of Transport which is part of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, with the participation of 56 subjects from all age groups. For the simulation of the increased MWL conditions during driving, a secondary task was employed. To this end, the MIT AgeLab Delayed Digit Recall Task in the 1-back version was adapted for the needs of the present research. The driving scenario included 4 unexpected events, which further increase driver’s MWL. Driving performance was observed and relative parameters were measured as RT on the unexpected events, accidents occurred, and maneuvers performed. Appropriate statistical analysis was performed to examine the difference in the drivers’ RT in the unexpected events. Results demonstrated that higher MWL increased drivers’ RT in the majority of the participants. Furthermore, results also indicated a number of participants that probably employed adaptive control behaviors to counterbalance the increased MWL. Overall, variance on MWL proved to play an important role on driver performance, and thus further research on its consequences on driving performance, and the factors that influence its variance during driving, is imperative.

Resumen
Accurate rainfall detection and estimation are essential for many research and operational applications. Traditional rainfall detection and estimation techniques have achieved considerable success but with limitations. Thus, in this study, the relationships between the gauge (point measurement) and the microwave links (MWL) rainfall (line measurement), and the MWL to the satellite observations (area-wide measurement) are investigated for (area-wide) rainfall detection and rain rate retrieval. More precisely, we investigate if the combination of MWL with Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite signals could improve rainfall detection and rainfall rate estimates. The investigated procedure includes an initial evaluation of the MWL rainfall estimates using gauge measurements, followed by a joint analysis of the rainfall estimates with the satellite signals by means of a conceptual model in which clouds with high cloud top optical thickness and large particle sizes have high rainfall probabilities and intensities. The analysis produced empirical thresholds that were used to test the capability of the MSG satellite data to detect rainfall on the MWL. The results from Kenya, during the “long rains” of 2013, 2014, and 2018 show convincing performance and reveal the potential of MWL and MSG data for area-wide rainfall detection.

Resumen
Following its establishment in 1962, the Muslim World League (MWL) was meant to be an organization that expands the outreach of Saudi Arabia and its then Wahabi version of Islam in the world in the time when other competing ideologies, especially Arab nationalism, were on the rise. This allowed it to carry out religious, cultural, aid and educational programs. At the time, The Saudi adopted version of Islam known as Wahabism was rejected in the western world. This study analyses news reports about the MWL published by mostly western media outlets, by using Critical Discourse Analysis as a theory. This study concludes that the coverage of MWL has changed recently from being negative to being positive with Mohammad Al-Issa assuming the leadership of MWL and with radical changes taking place in Saudi Arabia itself, politically, socially, religiously and culturally. Western media coverage of MWL now connects the organization to coexistence, religious tolerance, openness and moderate thinking and positive view of other faiths. It suggests that MWL has rejected all forms of radicalism and strict interpretation of Islam and calls for unity and building bridges with other religions.

Resumen
This study aims to determine the effect of adding milled wood lignin (MWL) to the sun protection factor (SPF) of commercially available lotion and sunscreen. The MWL was isolated from Coffea Arabica L. husks using the Björkman method. FT-IR spectroscopic analysis showed two characteristic peaks located at around 1200 cm-1 and 1300 cm-1, which indicates the presence of guaiacyl and syringyl groups. UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis showed two peaks located at around 278 nm and 325 nm, which indicates the presence of guaiacyl and some conjugated phenolic groups, respectively. The isolated MWL was then added to commercially available sunscreen and lotion at various concentrations. The sun protection factor (SPF) was then determined using the Mansur method and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. Results have shown that from 0% to 40 % by mass of MWL added, there was an observable average increase from 0.90 to 13.86 SPF for lotion, while there was an increase from 26.47 to 34.00 SPF for sunscreen. Results suggest that for lotion the SPF significantly increased if MWL was added from 0% up to 40% while for sunscreen the SPF significantly increased if MWL was added from 0% up to 20%.

Resumen
Open-source Multiwavelength Analytical Ultracentrifugation (MWL-AUC) detection systems have been evolving for over a decade. Continual advances emerging out of several research groups have brought the instrumentation technology to increasingly higher levels of performance. The capabilities of MWL-AUC have been documented in many publications, demonstrating the applicability of broad spectrum absorbance acquisitions in analytical ultracentrifugation to a wide array of scientific fields. Despite numerous examples of the usefulness and unique advantages of MWL-AUC, the adoption of the technology by more research groups has been slow. The complexity of the hardware, integration within an ultracentrifuge platform and lack of practical construction and operational information is the likely source of reluctance. Here, we clearly describe the challenges facing a researcher considering adopting MWL-AUC technology in their own laboratories, and provide the information necessary to implement and operate a MWL-AUC system. The discussion includes details of detector assembly, optical alignment, and acquisition parameter settings necessary to achieve high quality experimental results.

Resumen
Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) has made an important contribution to polymer and particle characterization since its invention by Svedberg (Svedberg and Nichols 1923; Svedberg and Pederson 1940) in 1923. In 1926, Svedberg won the Nobel price for his scientific work on disperse systems including work with AUC. The first important discovery performed with AUC was to show the existence of macromolecules. Since that time AUC has become an important tool to study polymers in biophysics and biochemistry. AUC is an absolute technique that does not need any standard. Molar masses between 200 and 1014 g/mol and particle size between 1 and 5000 nm can be detected by AUC. Sample can be fractionated into its components due to its molar mass, particle size, structure or density without any stationary phase requirement as it is the case in chromatographic techniques. This very property of AUC earns it an important status in the analysis of polymers and particles. The distribution of molar mass, particle sizes and densities can be measured with the fractionation. Different types of experiments can give complementary physicochemical parameters. For example, sedimentation equilibrium experiments can lead to the study of pure thermodynamics. For complex mixtures, AUC is the main method that can analyze the system. Interactions between molecules can be studied at different concentrations without destroying the chemical equilibrium (Kim et al. 1977). Biologically relevant weak interactions can also be monitored (K ≈ 10-100 M-1). An analytical ultracentrifuge experiment can yield the following information: • Molecular weight of the sample • Number of the components in the sample if the sample is not a single component • Homogeneity of the sample • Molecular weight distribution if the sample is not a single component • Size and shape of macromolecules & particles • Aggregation & interaction of macromolecules • Conformational changes of macromolecules • Sedimentation coefficient and density distribution Such an extremely wide application area of AUC allows the investigation of all samples consisting of a solvent and a dispersed or dissolved substance including gels, micro gels, dispersions, emulsions and solutions. Another fact is that solvent or pH limitation does not exist for this method. A lot of new application areas are still flourishing, although the technique is 80 years old. In 1970s, 1500 AUC were operational throughout the world. At those times, due to the limitation in detection technologies, experimental results were obtained with photographic records. As time passed, faster techniques such as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), light scattering (LS) or SDS-gel electrophoresis occupied the same research fields with AUC. Due to these relatively new techniques, AUC began to loose its importance. In the 1980s, only a few AUC were in use throughout the world. In the beginning of the 1990s a modern AUC -the Optima XL-A - was released by Beckman Instruments (Giebeler 1992). The Optima XL-A was equipped with a modern computerized scanning absorption detector. The addition of Rayleigh Interference Optics is introduced which is called XL-I AUC. Furthermore, major development in computers made the analysis easier with the help of new analysis software. Today, about 400 XL-I AUC exist worldwide. It is usually applied in the industry of pharmacy, biopharmacy and polymer companies as well as in academic research fields such as biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and material science. About 350 core scientific publications which use analytical ultracentrifugation are published every year (source: SciFinder 2008 ) with an increasing number of references (436 reference in 2008). A tremendous progress has been made in method and analysis software after digitalization of experimental data with the release of XL-I. In comparison to the previous decade, data analysis became more efficient and reliable. Today, AUC labs can routinely use sophisticated data analysis methods for determination of sedimentation coefficient distributions (Demeler and van Holde 2004; Schuck 2000; Stafford 1992), molar mass distributions (Brookes and Demeler 2008; Brookes et al. 2006; Brown and Schuck 2006), interaction constants (Cao and Demeler 2008; Schuck 1998; Stafford and Sherwood 2004), particle size distributions with Angstrom resolution (Cölfen and Pauck 1997) and the simulations determination of size and shape distributions from sedimentation velocity experiments (Brookes and Demeler 2005; Brookes et al. 2006). These methods are also available in powerful software packages that combines various methods, such as, Ultrascan (Demeler 2005), Sedift/Sedphat (Schuck 1998; Vistica et al. 2004) and Sedanal (Stafford and Sherwood 2004). All these powerful packages are free of charge. Furthermore, Ultrascans source code is licensed under the GNU Public License (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html). Thus, Ultrascan can be further improved by any research group. Workshops are organized to support these software packages. Despite of the tremendous developments in data analysis, hardware for the system has not developed much. Although there are various user developed detectors in research laboratories, they are not commercially available. Since 1992, only one new optical system called “the fluorescence optics” (Schmidt and Reisner, 1992, MacGregor et al. 2004, MacGregor, 2006, Laue and Kroe, in press) has been commercialized. However, except that, there has been no commercially available improvement in the optical system. The interesting fact about the current hardware of the XL-I is that it is 20 years old, although there has been an enormous development in microelectronics, software and in optical systems in the last 20 years, which could be utilized for improved detectors. As examples of user developed detector, Bhattacharyya (Bhattacharyya 2006) described a Multiwavelength-Analytical Ultracentrifuge (MWL-AUC), a Raman detector and a small angle laser light scattering detector in his PhD thesis. MWL-AUC became operational, but a very high noise level prevented to work with real samples. Tests with the Raman detector were not successful due to the low light intensity and thus high integration time is required. The small angle laser light scattering detector could only detect latex particles but failed to detect smaller particles and molecules due to low sensitivity of the detector (a photodiode was used as detector). The primary motivation of this work is to construct a detector which can measure new physico-chemical properties with AUC with a nicely fractionated sample in the cell. The final goal is to obtain a multiwavelength detector for the AUC that measures complementary quantities. Instrument development is an option for a scientist only when there is a huge potential benefit but there is no available commercial enterprise developing appropriate equipment, or if there is not enough financial support to buy it. The first case was our motivation for developing detectors for AUC. Our aim is to use today’s technological advances in microelectronics, programming, mechanics in order to develop new detectors for AUC and improve the existing MWL detector to routine operation mode. The project has multiple aspects which can be listed as mechanical, electronical, optical, software, hardware, chemical, industrial and biological. Hence, by its nature it is a multidisciplinary project. Again by its nature it contains the structural problem of its kind; the problem of determining the exact discipline to follow at each new step. It comprises the risk of becoming lost in some direction. Having that fact in mind, we have chosen the simplest possible solution to any optical, mechanical, electronic, software or hardware problem we have encountered and we have always tried to see the overall picture. In this research, we have designed CCD-C-AUC (CCD Camera UV/Vis absorption detector for AUC) and SLS-AUC (Static Light Scattering detector for AUC) and tested them. One of the SLS-AUC designs produced successful test results, but the design could not be brought to the operational stage. However, the operational state Multiwavelength Analytical Ultracentrifuge (MWL-AUC) AUC has been developed which is an important detector in the fields of chemistry, biology and industry. In this thesis, the operational state Multiwavelength Analytical Ultracentrifuge (MWL-AUC) AUC is to be introduced. Consequently, three different applications of MWL-AUC to the aforementioned disciplines shall be presented. First of all, application of MWL-AUC to a biological system which is a mixture of proteins lgG, aldolase and BSA is presented. An application of MWL-AUC to a mass-produced industrial sample (β-carotene gelatin composite particles) which is manufactured by BASF AG, is presented. Finally, it is shown how MWL-AUC will impact on nano-particle science by investigating the quantum size effect of CdTe and its growth mechanism. In this thesis, mainly the relation between new technological developments and detector development for AUC is investigated. Pioneering results are obtained that indicate the possible direction to be followed for the future of AUC. As an example, each MWL-AUC data contains thousands of wavelengths. MWL-AUC data also contains spectral information at each radial point. Data can be separated to its single wavelength files and can be analyzed classically with existing software packages. All the existing software packages including Ultrascan, Sedfit, Sedanal can analyze only single wavelength data, so new extraordinary software developments are needed. As a first attempt, Emre Brookes and Borries Demeler have developed mutliwavelength module in order to analyze the MWL-AUC data. This module analyzes each wavelength separately and independently. We appreciate Emre Brookes and Borries Demeler for their important contribution to the development of the software. Unfortunately, this module requires huge amount of computer power and does not take into account the spectral information during the analysis. New software algorithms are needed which take into account the spectral information and analyze all wavelengths accordingly. We would like also invite the programmers of Ultrascan, Sedfit, Sedanal and the other programs, to develop new algorithms in this direction.

This thesis traces the history of UNESCO's editorial project "The Different Aspects of Islamic Culture" (1977-2016). It aims to analyze the investment of Arab and Islamic organizations in UNESCO's human and social sciences programs from a case study. In the mid-1970s, the history of Islam and Muslims became a soft power issue for religious and political authorities seeking global Islamic leadership. Academic controversies emerged between liberal and integral Muslim intellectuals struggling with logics of regional ideological influence. How to write a scientific history of Islam considering cultural recognition, the urgency of the racial issue, the fight against prejudices about Islam and Muslims, and respect for religious beliefs? The 1980s opened a new stage. For the first time, the UNESCO General Conference recognizes religion as an integral component of cultural identity. The OIC-ISESCO stands out as the Third Way organizations and puts an end to the pluralization and competition of actors. It's the beginning of two decades of Islamic cultural normalization at UNESCO in a global context marked by Islamic terrorism, and openness to intercultural and religious dialogue

Honey and propolis are produced by bees from the nectar and sap collected from plants. In the process, the phenolic compounds derived from secondary metabolism of plants are incorporated into the products mentioned. Honey and propolis samples from multiple regions have been characterized and phenolic compounds can be divided into: hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, flavonoids and glycosylated flavonoids. In the literature, there is no consensus among the authors about the values for in vitro antioxidant activity. Moreover, these methods do not represent physiological conditions such as concentration of substrates and metabolites interaction. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an alternative tool for a biological assays, since it is similar to mammalian cells. The main goal of this study is to compare the antioxidant potential of different phenolic compounds classes using representatives morin, rutin, chlorogenic acid and syringic acid in control strains (BY4741) and mutant (?sod1 and ?gsh1) of S. cerevisiae. They were evaluated in dose-dependent toxicity, stress tolerance, and lipid peroxidation. All tested phenolic compounds were effective in reducing intracellular oxidative damage, especially the chlorogenic acid in the control strain. When compared to stressed cells, it promoted 75% increase on cell survival rates, compared with 57% on average for the other treatments; and 60% decrease in levels of lipid peroxidation, compared to reductions close to 47% with other treatments. In mutant strains, all compounds presented similar results. Thus, two components of the class hydroxycinnamic acid, caffeic acid and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) were tested comparatively. Both acted as an antioxidant in S. cerevisiae, however CAPE was the most toxic substance promoting the most significant increase on reduced glutathione levels among hydroxycinnamic derivatives. This result supports some related research that claims phenolic compounds protectection is related to activation of the antioxidant system as xenobiotic action of these substances

The present paper aims to reflect about the creative process of visual artist Leya Mira Brander (born 1976 in São Paulo), in an attempt to unwrap the gestures that turn her unique as a printmaker. Among the various possibilities of cropping, we chose the approach of the technical procedures involved in the making of images, the relationship between image and memory and the use of the word as a poetic recurrence. Divided into three chapters, the first one examines the making of the engraving in its implications and consequences, and the montage and procedural methodology in her work, based on theoretical considerations by Georges DidiHuberman and Walter Benjamin. The second chapter addresses the compositional visual elements of the artist's work in the light of image and memory, emphasizing her thematic preferences and references involving the gestures of citation and metamorphosis. The result are images that derive from her own universe as well as from the mention of icons in the history of art. In the same chapter, we also seek to reflect on the legacy of irony and allegory present in her work, whose theoretical shield poured the writings of Giorgio Agamben and Pedro Duarte. The third and final chapter is intended to place the word and its uses in the creation of the artist process, ending with words that manifest as reports of love, analyzed in the light of the writings of Roland Barthes.

Chapter Two, entitled ‘The Muslim World League: A Forerunner to International Translational daʿwa Networks’, outlines the history and impact of one of the earliest Saudi Muslim organisations dedicated to translation, The Muslim World League (MWL), which was established in 1962. It traces the emergence of the idea of ‘approved’ or ‘authorised’ Muslim-authored translations of the Qur’an, originally in terms of the adoption and production of pre-existing translations as well as the later commissioning of projects that led to new, bespoke translations. Although the Muslim World League only produced four completely new translations (if one does not count the translations produced as a result of some of its later collaborative projects), its activities represented the first instance of Saudi state intervention in Qur’an translation, motivated by both political and religious factors.

Resumen
Abstract This study details a complex wire recovery operation in a live well that involved transitioning from coiled tubing (CT) to mechanical wireline (MWL), in both slickline [MA1]or braided line, to retrieve the wire in good condition and later hand it over to an electrical wireline (e-line) unit to spool it onto a drum. The operation was carried out on a live, sour gas well, demanding a unique setup and emphasizing safety. Two successful recovery operations removed a significant amount of e-line left in the well plus the upper section of the e-line bottomhole assembly (BHA) while safely pushing the lower section of the e-line BHA to the bottom of the well. An integrated, multipurpose pressure control equipment (PCE) stack provided safety and redundancy, facilitating retrieval with both CT and MWL. The PCE stack design proved robust, enabling recovery without killing the well. Notably, the operation seamlessly integrated CT, MWL, e-line, and a stimulation vessel, all utilizing the same PCE. A significant challenge involved the handover of the recovered e-line from CT to MWL, requiring careful coordination and movement to prevent stripping the retrieved e-line inside the wire-line valve rams and the risk of gas leaks. Innovatively, this operation marked the first use of downhole measurements for wire recovery alongside the application of jars and impact hammers while pumping on the backside of the coiled tubing, a pioneering approach in this context of live-well e-line recovery. Downhole measurements, particularly tension and compression readouts, aided decision-making, reducing the need for reruns. Furthermore, a downhole camera captured changes in the e-line and BHA. Overall, this operation represents an innovative achievement in wire recovery from live, sour gas wells.

Resumen
Surface layers are investigated by means of MAI–MWL (multiple angle of incidence, multiple wavelength) ellipsometry. The "layers" investigated are modifications of optical glasses in the near-surface region, caused by polishing and cleaning processes. The influence of several treatments on different materials is discussed. The device used is a new, special ellipsometer arrangement using only absolutely nescessary elements but allowing fast and very accurate measurements.

Resumen
Linear random wave theory (LRWT) is frequently used to simulate water particle kinematics at different nodes of an offshore structure from a reference surface elevation record. However, it is well known that LRWT leads to water particle kinematics with exaggerated high-frequency components in the vicinity of mean water level (MWL). A number of empirical techniques have been suggested to provide a more realistic representation of near surface wave kinematics. The empirical techniques popular in the offshore industry include Wheeler stretching, linear extrapolation, delta stretching, and vertical stretching. Each of these methods is intended to calculate sensible kinematics above the MWL, yet they have been found to differ from one another in the results yielded. In this paper, two new methods of simulating water particle kinematics are introduced. In this study, the values of 100-year responses derived from different methods of simulating wave kinematics are compared.

California: International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence Organization, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.24963/ijcai.2017/607.

Resumen
This paper proposes a novel direct policy search (DPS) method with model selection for partially observed Markov decision processes (POMDPs). DPSs have been standard for learning POMDPs due to their computational efficiency and natural ability to maximize total rewards. An important open challenge for the best use of DPS methods is model selection, i.e., determination of the proper dimensionality of hidden states and complexity of policy functions, to mitigate overfitting in highly-flexible model representations of POMDPs. This paper bridges Bayesian inference and reward maximization and derives marginalized weighted log-likelihood~(MWL) for POMDPs which takes both advantages of Bayesian model selection and DPS. Then we propose factorized asymptotic Bayesian policy search (FABPS) to explore the model and the policy which maximizes MWL by expanding recently-developed factorized asymptotic Bayesian inference. Experimental results show that FABPS outperforms state-of-the-art model selection methods for POMDPs, with respect both to model selection and to expected total rewards.

Resumen
The following report represents a continuation of our ongoing efforts to understand and quantify the effect of stress on MFL signals from oil and gas transmission line inspection tools. Earlier GRI funding has enabled us to develop an unprecedented understanding of stress effects on magnetic behaviour in pipeline steels, and this understanding is now further enhanced and applied to specific problems such as MFL signals from interacting defects and also MFL signals produced from mechanical damage. This report summarizes the result of the 2002 studies. These studies focused on 3 main areas: MFL signals from interacting defects examined how magnetic behaviour is altered when two pits are sufficiently close that their stress and magnetization fields interact. This produces MFL signal effects that differ from those of isolated defects. MFL signal dependence on elastic, plastic and residual strain this continues our fundamental investigation into stress effects. By combining applied uniaxial strain and stress-relief heat treatments, we have been able to show how magnetic behaviour and MFL signals respond to different types of deformation. Specifically, we have found the elastic deformation has a significant effect, but that plastic deformation does not. This is a fundamental result on which our further modeling and experimental studies are based. MFL signals from mechanical damage this is the first year we have turned our attention to this specific area, however our earlier results have laid the groundwork for these studies. MFL signals from dents contain geometry and stress components. We have conducted experimental and finite element modeling studies of MFL signals from dented samples, and have shown that the MFL signal from shallow dents arises from the residual stress pattern, while severe dent signals are mainly related to dent geometry. This work forms the main part of a continuing study.

Resumen
Unsupported branch connections or branch connections under loads due to unstable support conditions are an integrity threat and potential failure location in pipelines. No industry accepted method currently exists to assist operators in identifying problematic branch connections in a measurably-reliable way. Low field magnetic flux leakage (LF-MFL) offers one potential method to identify stressed sections of pipeline. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the ability of LF-MFL in-line inspection (ILI) technology to characterize loading conditions around branch connections and to validate the use of LF-MFL ILI to identify stressed branch connections. The results of this work will provide operators with guidance for using LF-MFL ILI tools to identify integrity threats.
