Resumen
Magister Artium - MA
This thesis explores the production of music with musicians, singers and music producers who adhere to and promote Pentecostalist Christianity. The music they produce is a recently emerged genre, which I call 'Pentecospel'. I have coined this term to refer to a contemporary form of religiously inspired popular music, which is performed by young musicians belonging to various Pentecostal churches in Cape Town. I argue that 'Pentecospel' music is an emergent social form of self-representation, which is framed around Pentecostalism and the sound of Cape Town, as identified by Martin (2013). Young musicians and singers in Cape Town are absorbing and appropriating global styles of music, concepts and beliefs and music making techniques within their own musical compositions and transform their music performances in a way that enhances their local popularity. Thus, I elaborate on the processes of production through technical and social interpretations. This thesis will explore how performance, engaging audiences, the social interaction between people and technology, and the creation of their own unique sound on their musical instruments are linked to visual approaches located in the anthropology. This thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork which took place mostly between December 2014 and February 2015. During this period, I worked with music producers and young people who have recorded at the 'Sounds of the Nations Africa: Cape Town' recording studio in Bellville, Cape Town, sharing their experiences of everyday life in and outside the studio. My three month long fieldwork included in-depth interviews, conversations and discussions, photographic and video material, and activity field notes. I made use of these methods in order to record my observations in the recording studio, during rehearsals and in public performances focusing on the social and musical interaction with the performing artists I got to know, through participant observation. I include my own participation as a musician and audience member with the use of these methods, in recording music in the 'Sounds of the Nations' recording studio for their upcoming album "Sound of Africa" and in public performances.

Resumen
The development of tools and services for the realisation of the Semantic Web has been a very active field of research in recent years, with a strong focus on linking existing data. In the field of music information management, Semantic Web technologies may facilitate searching and browsing, and help to reveal relationships with data from other domains. At the same time, many algorithms have been developed to extract low and high-level features, which enable the user to analyse music and audio in detail. The use of semantics in the process of music production however is still a relatively new field of research. With computer systems and music processing applications becoming increasingly powerful and complex in their underlying structure, semantics can help musicians and producers in decision processes, and provide more natural interactions with the systems. Audio effects represent an integral part in modern music production. They modify an input signal and may be applied in order to enhance the perceived quality of a sound or to make more artistic changes to it in the composition process. Employing music information retrieval (MIR) and Semantic Web technologies specifically for the control of audio effects has the potential to be a significant step in their evolution. Detailed descriptions of the use of audio effects in a music production project can additionally facilitate the description of work flows and the reproducibility of production procedures, adding an additional layer of depth to MIR. We substantiate the hypothesis that the collection of audio related metadata during the production process is beneficial, by comparing the results of various feature extraction techniques on audio material before and after the application of audio effects. We develop a formal Semantic Web ontology for the domain of Audio Effects in the context of music production. The ontology enables the creation of detailed metadata about audio effects implementations within the Studio Ontology framework for use in music production projects. The ontology contains inter-linkable classification systems based on different criteria constituting an interdisciplinary classification. Finally, we evaluate the ontology and present several use cases and applications, such as adaptive audio effects using and creating semantic metadata.

Resumen
The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies that well-established home recording studio owners in a city in the southeastern United States have used to compete in the recording industry. Four home recording studio owners served as participants. Each participant owned and operated a home studio business in the target area for longer than 10 years. Porter's 5 competitive forces model and Christensen's disruptive innovation theory were the conceptual lenses for this study. Interviews, direct observations, and website documents were the 3 data collection sources used to achieve methodological triangulation. The data were analyzed using Yin's 5-step thematic approach to qualitative data analysis: compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding. Four themes emerged from the analysis of the data: doing business and making money with friends, keeping the family safe and the studio secure, decoupling the clock from the creative process, and linking strategy to personal goals. The findings of this study may contribute to positive social change by economically empowering aspiring entrepreneurs to become small business owners and create new jobs that help strengthen their local economies.

Resumen
This thesis examines the concept of 'artist development' in music, identifying how musicians develop through the production process, and the role that the producer can play in such development. The study outlines the history of artist development in the music industry and the role of the record producer as an auteur figure, connecting this broad context with creative practice through the production of two EP recordings. Reflecting on artist development from the perspective of producer, the author identifies key elements of the production process that can contribute to the development of artists in a studio setting.

Resumen
This thesis develops a relational geography perspective on creative work and practice, with a specific focus on the recording studio sector. Drawing on an extensive social network analysis, a questionnaire survey, and nineteen semi-structured interviews with recording studio engineers and producers in London (UK), the thesis reveals how recording studios are constituted by a number of types of relations. Firstly, studios are spaces that involve a material and technological relationality between studio workers and varied means of production. Studios are material and technological spaces that influence and shape human actions and social inter-actions. Secondly, studios are sites of relationality between social actors, including engineers, musicians and artists. The thesis reveals how the ability to construct and maintain social relations, and perform emotional labour , is of particular importance to the management of the creative process of producing and recording music, and to building the individual social capital of studio workers. Finally, the thesis argues that studios are sites of changing employment relations between studio workers and studio as employer. In the recording studio sector, a complex and changing set of employment practices have re-defined the relationship between employee and employer and resulted in a set of employment relations characterised by constant employment uncertainty for freelance studio workers. It is argued that the three types of relations revealed in this thesis, manifest at a multiplicity of geographical scales, construct recording studios as distinctive social and economic creative spaces. In conclusion, it is argued that a relational perspective is central to progressing geographical accounts of creative work and of project-based industries in general.

Resumen
As music technology ever develops, so too the creative practices and sonic outcomes of popular music productions evolve in response. This project therefore investigates the ways in which user-led system design informs the author’s practice as a recording studio mix engineer and as co-creator of popular music recordings. The dissertation details a two-year study into the Stairways mixing preparation framework developed by the author. Stairways will be tested for its suitability to design personalised mixing systems with a view to achieving optimum creative results for various musical styles. The study documents the creation of mixes for eight original pieces of music, as written by six artists /bands, and where this development has been traced to provide a number of interpretations as 18 tracks on an accompanying CD portfolio. This compares the original artist ‘rough’ mixes with further insights into the application of digital and hybrid analogue systems. This project is situated within the field of professional practice and therefore draws upon a range of literature including scholarly texts, trade magazines, popular music press, practitioner interviews and weblogs. A mixed method research design employs the author’s multi-decade experience as a mix professional and educator via a practice-based approach to detail the processes involved in the creation of the original music in question. This is situated within three action research cycles that progress the design by detailing the insights gained from each recording session as they progress over time and where various emergent sonic and creative phenomenon are examined. The dissertation is supported by a detailed series of appendices to present technical approaches, reflective journal entries and philosophical considerations for how to approach a given mix.

Abstract: This research aimed to identify convergences in mediation work of record producers during the movimento do pagode of the 1980s and 1990s. Samba made in the rodas de pagode in the 1980s, commercially known as pagode - more recently called rootsy samba -, is characterized by musicologists as the representative of restricted communities and samba tradition. Likewise, musicologists often characterize the artists that emerged in the 1990s - and had their work classified as pagode - as incorporators of foreign and modern elements to the samba, creating a "new" pagode which became known as "romantic pagode". Despite these dichotomies involving the pagode, passing the music of both segments (and periods) by a recording studio reflects a process of mediation and the figures of record producers are responsible for that within the music industry. Through the analysis of repertoire of artists connected with the pagode (in both decades) and semi-structured interviews with the record producers of those artists it was possible to identify some strategies, objectives and standards of record production that leave the pre-established boundaries less clear. Thus it can be concluded that besides the dichotomies there are many convergences for assessing the pagode in a less segmental speech - more independent of the modern-traditional, hybrid-authentic, national-international discussions that have been basing the studies on the subject. Analyzing the pagode through the prism of the record producers makes possible to identify the market as borders subtractor and distinct poles integrator

This dissertation attempts to adequately represent and explain the complex field-specific processes which take place in the recording studios of popular music production during the creation of configurations of sound. Using participant observation in Berlin-based recording studios for data collection, this data was analyzed by utilizing and modifying the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault. In contrast to Bourdieu’s claims that fields have an identical structure, the field of popular music production is quite unique in its workings and cannot be explained in such a manner. Based on these findings, a partially different model and terminology is being developed. Most of the used data is available as (German) transcription in the appendix.

Den tredje låten är "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" från livekonserten.

The purpose of this study has been to introspectively examine which musical and creative aspects are important to me in my artistic expression, and how these aspects have affected me as a music producer. I have also examined my artistic working process and which methods are more or less favorable. With a theoretical starting point in the philosopher Martin Heidegger's theory of the origin of the work of art, and the theories of layers of meaning in the musical object by the professor in musical education Fred V. Nielsen, I have chosen to analyze three songs within my artist project - LiLL. By analyzing these songs, I have seen how important it is for me that the three layers of meaning, emotions, tension and kinetics / bodily, are connected and how I use visions and inner images to relate to the abstract creation of music in DAW:s. This study has led to insights regarding my artistic working process which are that my musical process benefits from collaborations and, in affordance with Heidegger's theory, that I create myself as a music producer by creating music at the same time as my musical ability develops by creating music.

The purpose of this project was to compare individual and collaborative work, and to study how the different forms of work methods mentally affected me and the participants. The method used is the implementation of three sub-studies which included projects where I created music with others and individually, as well as an interview study. One experience from this project is that, when it comes to collaborative and individual work within music creation, each situation is unique. One result is that the differences between how the various working methods are experienced, depends on several factors. These factors include, who is participating, what task is to be solved, the relationship between the participants and what time frames apply. For me, an important insight has been that I prefer working both individually and collaboratively. To be able to make music productions and achieve my artistic goals, I need to, socialize with others, share and create ideas with different people, as well as the opportunity to work individually to be able to create music freely without taking anyone else into consideration.

Resumen
This thesis focuses on a time in the mid-1960s where practice in the studio changed from a formal arena where previously rehearsed songs were recorded, to a playground where sonic possibilities were explored and sound manipulation became normal practice. This abuse of technology and manipulation of reality became part of the creative process in the studio, providing soundscapes that resonated with the counter-cultural ethos of upsetting the established order, and were adopted by the mainstream during the 1967 ‘Summer of Love”. Following a discussion of current literature, practice as research is applied to demonstrate how interaction with historical technology reveals the performative nature of the tacit knowledge that created many of the aural effects under consideration. The research then focuses through the prism of two case studies, “Eight Miles High” recorded by The Byrds in Los Angeles in January 1966, and “Rain”, recorded by The Beatles in London in April 1966. Through re-enactment of these historical recording sessions, I recreate the closed envirnment of the 1960’s recording studio. By interacting with historical technology and following a similar structure to the original sessions, I investigate how the methodology was influenced by collaborative actions, situational awareness and the demarcation of roles. Post session video analysis reveals the flow of decision making as the sessions unfold, and how interaction with the technological constraints recreates ‘forgotten’ techniques that were deemed everyday practice at the time and were vital to the outcome of the soundscapes. The thesis combines theory and practice to develop an understanding of how the engineers interacted with technology (Polanyi, 1966), often abusing the equipment to create manipulated soundscapes (Akrich and Latour, 1992), and how the sessions responded to musicians demanding innovation and experimentation, circumventing the constraints of established networks of practice (Law and Callon, 1986) during the flow of the recording session (Ingold, 2013).

Resumen
Music production is a relatively new subject in upper secondary school who place high demands on the teacher's expertise in many areas of knowledge, such as sound technology, composition, arranging and leadership. A music teacher education by deepening specialization in music production was not started until 2011, as teacher graduates before 2015 lack formal training in the subject. The purpose of the study is to highlight the teacher's view of what it takes to teach the subject music production in upper secondary school and how the application of their skills may seem teaching. The study consists of four interviews with teachers who teach music in upper secondary school. The study shows that teachers need to be multi-skilled to teach the subject music production. In addition to traditional music skills they must have significant knowledge of music technology, and be familiar with today's musical trends and cultures. The study shows that there are great advantages to being able to play one or more instruments as music production teacher, and having experience in the music industry is considered a must in order to make the lessons as realistic as possible. The challenge for today's music teachers is the need to constantly develop their skills to contribute in a meaningful and reality-grounded education in a constantly changing music industry.

Stemming from a recent surge in articles related to Korean masculinities, and based in afeminist and queer Marxist theoretical framework, this paper asks how gender, with a specificfocus on what is referred to as soft masculinity, is constructed through K-pop performances, aswell as what power structures are in play. By reading studies on pan-Asian masculinities andgender performativity - taking into account such factors as talnori and kkonminam, andinvestigating conceptual terms flower boy, aegyo, and girl crush - it forms a baseline for aqualitative research project. By conducting qualitative interviews with Swedish K-pop fans andperforming semiotic analysis of K-pop music videos, the thesis finds that although K-popmasculinities are perceived as feminine to a foreign audience, they are still heavily rooted in aheteronormative framework. Furthermore, in investigating the production of genderperformativity in K-pop, it finds that neoliberal commercialism holds an assertive grip overthese productions and are thus able to dictate ‘conceptualizations’ of gender and projectidentities that are specifically tailored to attract certain audiences. Lastly, the study shows thatthese practices are sold under an umbrella of ‘loyalty’ in which fans are incentivized toconsume in order to show support for their idols – in which the concept of desire plays asignificant role.

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to present the process and experiences of my music production project that was carried out during the last year of my masters’ studies. The project’s creative content is a Swedish pop album which created through collaborative and independent work. Three single releases and one music video have been released and distributed through the course of the project on streaming platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. In addition to the making of the album I have chosen to create a model to use as a frame for potential recruitment instances of creative collaborations, improve role definition and develop a more accurate method to credit rights holder’s moral credentials as a contributor to an artistic work. The root cause of this model is that a music producer often finds themselves as a multicompetent keyperson in creative collaborations where the lines between different professions overlap. The model is inspired of the software developers job terminology and aims to break up umbrella concept roles such as “songwriter, producer and performer” to facilitate the recruiting process of creative collaborations within the crafting of songs. The terminologies inspired out of the software developer’s professions are back-end, front-end and full-stack.

Resumen
Despite the interest in and importance of producing high quality choral performance, the question "How is superior performance produced?" has not been addressed in a holistic and naturalistic way. A synthesis of previous research findings suggests that a combination of actions, interactions, relationships, and conditions produce superior choral performance. Yet a holistic examination of this multi-faceted production process has not been conducted. In order to identify all factors contributing to the production of superior performance and how these factors work together, I comprehensively examined an extreme case of superior performance. This extreme case of superior performance was one high school, mixed choir who had performed at a national ACDA convention on three different occasions. This choir had consistently earned state superior ratings and top awards in many competitions. Through grounded theory analysis of over 34 hours of interview data, three and one-half days of observation, examination of material culture and field notes, and analysis of survey data, I purposed to discover how this choir produced superior performance. Results of my study indicated that a combination of choral performers' beliefs, values, characteristics, actions, and interactions produced superior performance. As the core explanation of the production of superior performance, the common beliefs and values of the director and his singers promoted and activated actions and interactions that produced superior performance. Choral performers (i.e., director and singers) strongly believed in and valued hard work, diligence, excellence, success, caring, responsibility, and the music. These beliefs and values powerfully determined their identity and the quality of their performance. The director's motivational strategies and expert technical pedagogy also provided explanation for how the choir produced superior performance. The director's musicianship and musical pedagogy powerfully motivated singers. The director's musicianship inspired singers to increasingly greater performance heights. Singers' love for the music and their convictions for producing aesthetically, expressive performance, grew as they learned about and experienced the intermingling of musical and textual devices. Of lesser importance to the production of superior performance was the director's expert technical pedagogy. Through technical pedagogy, singers learned to perform with precision. Through the director's motivational strategies, musicianship, and musical and technical pedagogy, singers learned the actions and interactions necessary for the production of superior performance. Performers' beliefs and values interacting with the motivational strategies of the director propelled singers into achieving these actions and interactions and determined the intensity with which they performed. The results of this investigation suggest examination into the effects of motivation, musicianship, and musical pedagogy on large ensemble performance quality. Results also suggest the need for investigation into the choral performers' beliefs and values and how they may impact the rehearsal and the quality of performance.

Ph.D.
This thesis investigates the roles, themes, techniques and contexts of composition in hip-hop. It seeks to explain how hip-hop artists view and define their work, while also taking into consideration the viewpoints of other participants in the marketing pool of hip-hop production and consumption. The conceptual plan on which the study is based is Afrocentric; coupled with Ethnographic method of data processing and interpretation. This method is comprised of personal interviews, participant observation, sonic analysis and the use of bibliographic entries and notes that allows for sense and meaning in text. Also used are documented data, which contain descriptions of hip-hop lyrics, interviews, opinions, journalistic notes, and scholarly reports as a means of evolving a cohesive sense of the message's intent, opinion, knowledge of its roles, themes, techniques, images, and contexts The study found that the issues and themes that dominate hip-hop include bondage impairment, concern over currently warped social values and trends, and challenges over oppressive cultural values and social institutions. The artists whose compositions and renderings were used for the purpose of this study not only demonstrated an ability to isolate and construct themes about issues, but were also familiar with the issues that reveal them as agents for the liberation of the minds of their Diaspora Africa peoples and communities. Their music and grassroots commentaries were found to be appropriately designed to persuade their targeted audience to greater awareness. They conveyed messages that encouraged positive attitude and behavioral change in respect to addressed themes that were, in the main, issues of disenfranchisement. They addressed negative, disapproving behaviors which the atmosphere of disenfranchisement has spurned, and were being expressed through the media of the hip-hop rap musicals. The study also highlights the connection between classical African musical expressions and postmodern Diaspora African musical innovations.

Resultatet i undersökningen visar några tydliga tendenser.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of children’s theatre, and if it meets the needs of the children.

Observations were carried out in three randomly chosen children’s theatre performances. After the observations, performers and the audience - in this case, children and their teachers - were interviewed. The questions dealt with how performers think prior to a performance for children, and how the audience reacted to it, in addition to how they think a good children’s theatre performance should be.

The result of the study indicates some clear tendencies. The three children’s theatre performances received good reviews with regard to performance, music and décor. But children are seldom familiar with the theatre and have trouble attaining information through watching alone. Thus, they need a different kind of theatrical performance than the three I observed. A performance in which they are more involved in the action.

This essay aims to examine how composers who specializes in production music identify themselves with their composing and work, this with help from the organisations that they support themselves through. The two organisations are STIM, The Swedish Composers International Musicbureu, or Epidemic Sound. The difference between the two are mainly that with STIM the composers let them manage the administration and to collect their income with Epidemic Sound is that they sell their righs to Epidemic Sound for a flat-fee. Because of this transaction the composition is now owned by the company and they can rent it out to other production companies who would like to have the music in their productions. To the study four composers from STIM, four composers from Epidemic Sound, one publisher and one representative from STIM have been interviewed. In the report it emerges that the composers that are from STIM have worked with music for a long time, the work is almost like their destiny, they see their compositions as artwork than as a craftmanship, they put big value to the copyright law, and the commission is a secondary reason to why they do what they do. The composers for Epidemic Sound on the other hand see their work more like craftmanship and the more secure salary are the reason why the composers choose Epidemic Sound. With the help from organizational-, motivational- and identitybased theories connections has been made between the theories and revenue model. This study shows that there’s been a change within the swedish market for production music since Epidemic Sound was founded in 2009. A change has occurd regarding the institutionalized approach to traditionally license music to production companies. This change has given a new type of composers with another work identity an opportunity to provide themselves on their music. This has been detected by studying how the composers identify themselves with their work and their composing depending on what revenue model they choose.

This research aims at studying the setting of composition and production of musical scores for the Brazilian cinema since the period called as Retomada until nowadays, by analyzing how the technological transformations in music and film production, the renovations in the cast of professionals and artists involved in movies and in the music market, the reinstatement of movie production based on financial incentive laws created on the 1990s and other contingencies have collaborated to solidify new models of film scores production in the contemporary years. The present moment of Brazilian cinematographic market is marked by meaningful reconfigurations in the production chains, with the predominance of organization models characterized by the \"project by project\" productions, in which is common a reduction of the professional and logistic structure. Music composers are to be distinguished in this setting, for their contemporary profile is very different than the traditional figures, who used to be musicians aligned to the classical music practices, with works based in musical notation and without much direct relationship with the technical apparatus of analog recording and editing. Music composers and producers nowadays, because of the technological advances in digital audio tools, the lower costs of the equipment and the transformations in the movies, music and publicity markets, are characterized, in general, for creating their music in digital production environment, commonly allying composition, recording, execution, editing, mixing and synchronization with the image in the same process. They are, mostly, owners of their recording studios or audio producing companies and are very self-sufficient, concentrating in their own work a lot of tasks that would require a greater number of professionals and a more complex structure of production before, which were impracticable many times in the earlier cinematographic reality of the country.

Resumen
The dissertation investigates and defines the vocal characteristics of rhythm and blues (R&B)/soul singing within contemporary commercial music (CCM). Over the course of more than 80 years, the R&B/soul style of singing has evolved to become a prominent and influential component of the music landscape. This research addressed the question of whether the ‘belt’ voice is an integral part of R&B/soul singing and investigated the skills required for its sustainability. Furthermore, the project explored, through rigorous acoustic analyses and computed tomography (CT) scanning, the physiological events occurring at the laryngeal level during ‘belting’ by R&B/soul singers. The study commenced with a comprehensive survey analysis of performances by five pioneering R&B/soul singers, assessed by a panel of recognised industry practitioners and pedagogues from across the globe. Through this evaluation and the accompanying questionnaire, the vocal characteristics of R&B/soul singing were examined and refined. The outcomes challenge and extend the scope of existing literature and reveal the belt voice as the most challenging characteristic of R&B/soul singing to acquire. The investigation narrowed its focus to the belt voice as a crucial characteristic, leading to five in-depth interviews with renowned practitioners and educators. The findings of these interviews unveiled a novel perspective on the timbral nuances of the R&B/soul belt voice, distinguishing it from traditional belt voices observed in music theatre. This notion acted as a catalyst for the final phase of the study, in which the biomechanical aspects of R&B/soul belting were explored. A groundbreaking experiment involving CT scanning of 10 vocalists during both comfortable and belted pitches uncovered pivotal insights into vocal fold lengthening, larynx positioning and pharyngeal wall mobility. These results contribute to the emerging understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind R&B/soul belting and highlight its uniqueness within the broader spectrum of vocal styles. In summary, this research establishes a comprehensive framework for understanding the vocal characteristics of R&B/soul singing, with a significant focus on the belt voice. By fusing artistic analysis, expert surveys, questionnaires, interviews and cutting-edge imaging techniques, this study advances our understanding of the vocal complexities that define this style, shedding light on both its artistic essence and the physiological events that underscore the R&B/soul singer’s performance.

Resumen
The aim of this paper is to investigate what part film music plays in the creation of stereo-types in the production of Swedish cinema, in the 1990s and early 2000s. This period of Swedish cinema was largely defined through the visualization of life in the smaller provinces of the country. The results were reached through the analyzing of four important works of this era, representing different provinces and genres. The examined movies have shown frequent use of extreme characters and a somewhat hostile environment in search of an interesting story. The music is used in ways of describing class differences amongst the inhabitants and to set the gen-eral mood of the concerned provinces: an agent often working in the unconscious of the viewer in order to affect the final results.

Critical design is a research- and innovationarea under development. The critical design theory has been used in many design-related areas and intends to get consumers to become more critical when it comes to how their everyday lives are controlled by different beliefs, values, ideologies and behavioral patterns that are incorporated into design (Dunne & Raby, 2001). Since critical design is a theory that seeks to transform in practice the challenge today lies in creating practical examples that show how it can be done, which is a necessity for the theory to develop (Bardzell et al., 2012). This study intends to be method developing by creating a set of tools based on selected parts (theoretical methods and perspectives) from critical design. The goal of these tools are to function as an instrument enabling practical implementation of critical design in a design/production process. In this study we have tested our tools in a specific productionprocess of a music video to explore how to apply critical design practically. In doing so we used design-oriented research methods, in particular Daniel Fällmans triangelmodel for interactiondesign and design research (2008). By bringing together critical design perspectives and video production purposes, this study hopes to make a contribution to the method fulfilling work of bridging the existing gap between theory and practice in critical design.

Resumen

During the evolution of the music industry, developments in the media environment have required music firms to adapt in order to survive. Changes in broadcast radio programming during the 1950s; the Compact Cassette during the 1970s; and the deregulation of media ownership during the 1990s are all examples of changes which have heavily affected the music industry. This study explores similar contemporary dynamics, examines how decision makers in the music industry perceive and make sense of the developments, and reveals how they revise their business strategies, based on their mental models of the media environment.

A qualitative system dynamics model is developed in order to support the reasoning brought forward by the study. The model is empirically grounded, but is also based on previous music industry research and a theoretical platform constituted by concepts from evolutionary economics and sociology of culture. The empirical data primarily consist of 36 personal interviews with decision makers in the American, British and Swedish music industrial ecosystems. The study argues that the model which is proposed, more effectively explains contemporary music industry dynamics than music industry models presented by previous research initiatives.

Supported by the model, the study is able to show how “new” media outlets make old music business models obsolete and challenge the industry’s traditional power structures. It is no longer possible to expose music at one outlet (usually broadcast radio) in the hope that it will lead to sales of the same music at another (e.g. a compact disc).

The study shows that many music industry decision makers still have not embraced the new logic, and have not yet challenged their traditional mental models of the media environment. Rather, they remain focused on preserving the pivotal role held by the CD and other physical distribution technologies.

Further, the study shows that while many music firms remain attached to the old models, other firms, primarily music publishers, have accepted the transformation, and have reluctantly recognised the realities of a virtualised environment.

This dissertation aims to analyse discursive strategies from Dosol in order to understand the present elements to keep its audience and the marketing activities. Based on French line of discourse analysis We look into the articles posted on its website at http://www.dosol.com.br within 2010 and We foment dialogues among music, media and communications researchers. Participant observation is slightly used on the critical perception and views of researched object to confront situations and step up, with theorists, the major part of closing remarks. The obtained results indicate a website speech paved on afirmative policies and social capital, trying to keep/seduce its audience with the efect of the intended credibility meaning. The economic factor wanders the speech so often that the speaker assumes a entrepreneur/cultural producer. As a niche market, Dosol assumes a main role in music industry for releasing the regional and local cultural production. On the other hand, it is noticeable that its sustainability and media visibility, as it is seen today, depends on the laws tor promote Culture, what denotes a lack of a regional cultural policies to medium and long term at Rio Grande do Norte

This dissertation is the result of in interest in the progression of media-technologies within the urban context. Large media billboards scattered along major vehicular routes, also advertisements and information displayed on the facades of buildings have become synonymous with the urban fabric. The intent of this dissertation is to determine the relationship between media-technologies and the social organizations of the city. Can one consider these technologies as generators for social interaction and the broadening of the urban cultural content? Media-technologies are becoming increasingly popular in the use of public spaces, signifying the ability and opportunity for these systems to create an interactive relationship with the user. The theme of the discourse is the creation of a Music Television production centre in Prinshof, a neglected part of the Pretoria inner city. Establishing an entertainment based development in this already vibrant area, might contribute to the systematic rejuvenation of this lower to middle-income community. The design proposal aims at becoming a social tool, encouraging the development and sustaining of the local cultural identity and realizing the potential of media/interaction technologies within the African context.

Resumen

This dissertation explores creative music, sound design and image production in the context of consumer culture (as defined by how its participants socialize in late-capitalist culture using commodities). Through the stylization of image, music and sound effects, advertisers communicate an abstract concept of a brand, and instantiate the brand through an audience member's heightened experience of the brand via the ad. Facilitated by socialized and mediatized frameworks for brand communications, branding is an embodied practice that relies on the audience member's participation with the brand through her/his real experience with an (audiovisual) advertisement. The effect of making the abstract brand tangible relies on successfully executing advertising objectives to create "impact" through stylized and often hyperreal representations of reality. At the same time, audience members' encounters with ads and branding practices represent bona fide experiences for them within American-capitalist cultural practices, and audience members take part in these practices as part of social participation and general making-sense of their everyday lives.

In late-capitalist consumer culture, the idea of the "consumer" operates within the liminal space of constructions of hyper-reality and the self. Through advertising, corporate interests mediate how people relate to and through commodities as consumers. Through ads, producers communicate an idea of a brand, that is, the collection and stylistic design of specific visual and sonic symbols, and the associated ideas, values or emotions that project an identity or persona about a company and its products or services. In attempts to increase the efficacy of their ads, ad producers fashion image, music and sound design specifically in ways they believe will generate "impact," that is, a physical, physiological or emotional response to audiovisual stimuli that are infused with symbolic meanings and values.

In their attempts to create effective ads, ad producers circumscribe identities of people based on demographics, behavior metrics, or a host of other measures intended to define what the industry calls "target audiences." With the belief that target audience members share wants, needs and values, ad producers build constellations of audiovisual signifiers that they believe will resonate with target audience members. These signifiers borrow from cultural narratives and myths to tell stories about brands and products, and communicate how people's lived experiences might be transformed through consumption practices.

With meticulous formulation of image, music and sound design, ad producers create a "hyperreality," that is exaggerated, heightened or stylized representation of reality. Through these carefully produced audio and visual artifacts, ad producers (re)circulate cultural narratives they believe communicate meaning and ideas of value, and make those abstract beliefs tangible through the audience member's sensorial experiences. With hyperreality grounded in an audience members' body and emotions, ad producers believe they can shape and direct audience members' ideas about their personal identities, and that of others and social groups. Additionally, ad image, music and sound design contribute to the naturalization of the ways people can socialize around branded identities and interconnect through commodities.

Resumen
This artistic project report is based on the production of two songs – A Bela e a Fera (Chico Buarque/Edu Lobo) and Em Paz (Léo Rocha) – through the use of virtual instruments, that will be used as reference for musicians and technicians in future records. Aspects of the technical/creative process are related as well as the conception of the arrangements, search for intended sound and registration of ideas on the computer. The development of the technology applied to music implies, as consequence, the amplification of the musical possibilities. The emergence of the home studio is a remarkable example of that. The artifice of audio recording/edition, that in other times were a distant luxury for most people, becomes increasingly accessible with the possibility of having a customizable workstation that is able to complete operations that are fundamental in music production. Based on this context, this project allows to explore subjects that permeate the elaboration and crafting of songs in the popular music panorama, such as arrangement, technology and musical production. Those subjects are investigated from a historical/theoretical perspective in the State of The Art section and developed as a report in the practical chapters of the research. The study about the relation between the arranger and the home studio is based, also, in my experience as a musician and producer in the past few years. As a result of this research, two songs are presented in audio format, along with complementary sheet music.

The creation and dissemination of music is one of the most intriguing phenomena in human history, and the recording and printing of music in physical format in the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries represents a revolution, not only technological but also cultural. Behind the sound waves emitted by the modern loudspeaker, there is more than just the musician and the composer - the sound engineer is revealed, allowing a given work to reach our ears as we hear it on a vinyl record, CD or cassette. Is (or should) it be the role of the sound engineer just that of a simple technical catalyst? What quantitative and qualitative impacts do they have on the final audible work? And does it make sense to categorize so strictly the labels of “producer”, “technician” and “artist” in a 21st century of technological revolutions? This thesis and internship report seek to deepen these issues, drawing conclusions based on practical and real-life experiences in a professional recording studio.

Resumen
Re-conceptualizing American commercial music radio as a pivotal site of culture production significantly advances the sociological study of popular music and culture. This project provides a radio-centered analysis of popular music production by examining radio's role in the popular music industry at the programmer, station, market, and industry levels of analysis. Drawing on trade journalism and programmer interviews, the structural features of the radio industry, the operation of its music format system, and the work of radio programmers are systematically described. This account forms the basis for an analytical model of programming paradigms which seeks to explain variation among stations and programmers. In addition, the study uses quantitative data gathered from an original survey of radio programmers to examine how the industry structure and the adoption of programming paradigms influence music programming. The quantitative findings confirm the existence of distinct programming paradigms and their differential impact on levels of innovation and diversity in music programming. While music formats are found to constrain the music programming options of individual programmers, these parameters are negotiated differently by programmers adopting different programming paradigms. The study also reveals important distinctions between stations according to market size, and use of audience and music research data. Larger market stations rely more heavily on objective research and consequently produce more standardized music programming than those in smaller markets. The study demonstrates the importance of considering commercial music radio stations and programmers as relatively autonomous producers of popular music culture, and confirms the necessity of integrating the previously marginalized study of radio into the mainstream of popular music research.

Resumen
This manuscript tells the stories of the Latin/o and general music industries in the United States from 1898 to 2000. It argues that performers transformed the local identities of aural industries based in place and melody into global industries of visual identities designed for space and celebrity. Both the Latin/o and general music industries shifted back and forth along a local-sound-to-global-sight spectrum more than once, from sounds of music rooted in specific places to sights of musicians uprooted across universal spaces between 1898 and 2000. This claim is supported by a textual analysis of archival materials, such as trade press articles, audio recordings, still photographs and motion pictures. While the general music industry's identity changed, the Latin/o industry's identity stayed the same, and vice-versa. Specifically, when the general industry identified with transnational performers and images between 1926 and 1963, the Latin/o industry retained its identification with the sounds of music rooted in specific places. From 1964 to 1979, as the Latin/o industry moved from one end of the spectrum to the other, only to return to its initial position, it was the general industry that maintained its identification with the midpoint of the spectrum. During the 1980s, the general industry zigzagged from the midpoint to the global-visual end and back again, while the Latin/o industry remained at the local-sonic end of the spectrum. In the 1990s, the Latin/o industry's local and sonic identity continued, and the general industry moved from the midpoint to the global-visual end of the spectrum with the Latin boom. The general industry's identity changed during each interval except 1964-1979, the only period in which the Latin/o industry's identity fluctuated. From Aural Places to Visual Spaces: the Latin/o and General Music Industries should be of interest to anyone invested in the relations between creativity and commerce, substance and style, or geography and genre.

Resumen
This dissertation highlights the importance of vocal registration/production in the ongoing discussion of how the material qualities of the singing voice transmit socially constructed meaning. Using the modern-day countertenor as an example, I show how falsetto singing can act as a marker for gender/sexuality. The first chapter of the project explains the anatomy and physiology of the singing voice, particularly as it applies to the falsetto register and the contemporary countertenor. Then, a brief look at how singing and gender fit within the burgeoning field of voice studies ensues. Chapter 2 inspects theories of vocal gender, identity, and sexuality in regards to vocal embodiment and applies them to the voice, singing, and the contemporary countertenor. Chapter 3 looks at the reception theories of Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser in order to pinpoint ways in which social norms can be inscribed on the voice, especially that of the countertenor Klaus Nomi. The last three chapters apply the theories purported in the first half of the dissertation to the contemporary countertenor in three countries–the United States, England, and Japan. Examining the use and appreciation of the countertenor in these different societies provides examples of how the falsetto register, singing, and norms of gender/sexuality are connected in the different social contexts. The epilogue projects how this type of academic inquiry can extend to other types of singing and societies.

Resumen
This dissertation explores the social patterns and cultural layers of musical "open mics" in New York City. The study uses a qualitative approach which includes methods such as ethnography, in-depth interviewing, historical and discourse analyses focusing on open mics and the popular musicians who attend and perform them. Open mics, short for "open microphones," are public events that allow musicians to perform songs without a pre-planned, formal booking with a club or venue. Owing a historical and discursive connection to the folk hootenannies and jazz jam sessions of the past, these events have proliferated and spread considerably across the United States since the 1990s since their development, by name, in the late 1970s. Open mics not only reflect a do-it-yourself and participatory cultural ethos manifested with other recent expressive cultural activities, but also demonstrate a growing interstitial "musical third place" residing between private practicing and public performance. Musical open mics as musical third places provide musicians and singer/songwriters to network with other musicians, practice new musical compositions and play when other performance opportunities are not readily available. It provides a means for musicians to "hone their craft" in terms of performance methods and also construct musical identities in the almost exclusive company of other working singer/songwriters. This "backstage region" is thus framed and keyed by the musicians onto a continuum between two theoretical poles: performance practicing and practicing performance. Performance practicing as defined in this study frames a more performance-oriented display for musicians in locations called "closed open mics" or COMs. These settings, also residing on a theoretical continuum are socially more exclusive in terms of performance types, the aesthetic careers of the performers, the genres represented and the sociological makeup of the setting participants in general. OOMs or "open open mics," on the other hand, usually have a more fluid, diverse sociological composition of musical performers, performance types, and musical genres played and represented in these mainly weekly events. Closed open mics align into more homogeneous, isomorphic settings comprising "local open mic scenes" and open open mics remain more heterogeneous, socially inclusive, and unsettled as "pre-scenes."
