Resumen
In the brain, information from all the senses interacts and is integrated in order to create a unified sensory percept. Some percepts appear unimodal, and some, cross modal. Unimodal percepts can be modified by crossmodal interactions given that our brains process multiple streams of sensory information in parallel and promote extensive interactions. TMS can provide valuable insights on the neural substrates associated with multisensory processing in humans. TMS is commonly described as a ‘relatively painless’ method of stimulating the brain noninvasively. However, TMS itself is strong multisensory and this should be considered while interpreting the results. With regard to the crossmodal sensory changes that follow sensory deprivation, these changes can be revealed using a variety of methods including the combination of TMS with neuroimaging.

Resumen
Perception: A Multisensory Perspective examines multisensory interactions as the key process behind how we perceive our own body, control its movements, perceive and recognize objects, respond to edible objects, perceive space, and perceive time. In addition, the book discusses multisensory processing in synaesthesia, multisensory attention, and the role of multisensory processing in learning. Multisensory phenomena in these domains are used to identify general principles, to introduce formal models, to present experimental methods, to discuss pathologies, and to illustrate applications within the domain of multisensory processing. The book is written to be understandable to the educated non-specialist and will be of interest to professionals who need to take into account multisensory processing in domains such as, for instance, physiotherapy and neurological rehabilitation, human–computer interfaces, or marketing. As the chapters address topics that are mostly left out of standard perception or medical textbooks, this book will also serve as a useful reference for the specialist perception scientist and for clinicians specialized in the treatment of sensory deficits.

Resumen
How we perceive edible objects is one of the most important perceptual functions served by our brains, both for its adaptive and hedonic implications. The perception of the flavour of foods is perhaps the quintessential multisensory experience, and in this chapter we will detail how flavour depends not only on coding taste in the mouth, but also on olfaction, vision, somatosensation, and even hearing. Multisensory interactions in the perception of food provide another important domain to illustrate principles of multisensory perception, are fundamental to understand methods of sensory analysis in the production of food, and provide an exciting new direction for analyses of culinary art.

Resumen
The nature of inner language has long been under the scrutiny of humanities, through the practice of introspection. The use of experimental methods in cognitive neurosciences provides complementary insights. This chapter focuses on wilful expanded inner language, bearing in mind that other forms coexist. It first considers the abstract vs. concrete (or embodied) dimensions of inner language. In a second section, it argues that inner language should be considered as an action-perception phenomenon. In a third section, it proposes a revision of the “predictive control” account, fitting with our sensory-motor view. Inner language is considered as deriving from multisensory goals, generating multimodal acts (inner phonation, articulation, sign) with multisensory percepts (in the mind’s ear, tact, and eye). In the final section, it presents a landscape of the cerebral substrates of wilful inner verbalization, including multisensory and motor cortices as well as cognitive control networks.

Resumen
This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. Soundscape concepts have been employed for more than 20 years to enrich audiovisual studies. They have also been debated extensively. This chapter addresses soundscape as shifting, processual, historical, and produced in contingent situations. It focuses on a specific aspect of methodology that is useful for considering how to advance research on the audiovisual: methods in motion. Soundscape studies have stressed that researchers sometimes need to leave the “laboratory” and venture into fieldwork. Some of the recent developments in the “marriage” of soundscape and audiovisual studies are described, with three goals: (1) to direct attention to soundscape studies as the art and scholarly study of listening, (2) to introduce the sensory memory walk, and (3) to introduce the listening walk. Sound studies are increasingly employed as a basis for developing multisensory methodologies of studying times, spaces, and materialities to relocate sensate users of space at the center of the researcher’s attention.

Resumen
This book provides newcomers and more experienced researchers with the very basics of magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG)—two noninvasive methods that can inform about the neurodynamics of the human brain on a millisecond scale. These two closely related methods are addressed side by side, starting from their physical and physiological bases and then advancing to methods of data acquisition, analysis, visualization, and interpretation. Special attention is paid to careful experimentation, guiding the readers to differentiate brain signals from various biological and non-biological artifacts and to ascertain that the collected data are reliable. The strengths and weaknesses of MEG and EEG are presented relative to each other and to other available brain-imaging methods. Necessary instrumentation and laboratory set-ups, as well as potential pitfalls in data collection and analysis are discussed. Spontaneous brain rhythms and evoked responses to sensory and multisensory stimulation are covered and examined both in healthy individuals and in various brain disorders, such as epilepsy. MEG/EEG signals related to motor, cognitive, and social events are discussed as well. The integration of MEG and EEG information with other methods to assess human brain function is discussed with respect to the current state-of-the art in the field. The book ends with a look to future developments in equipment design, and experimentation, emphasizing the role of accurate temporal information for human brain function.
