The multiphase induction motor is considered to be the promising alternative to the conventional three-phase induction motor, especially in safety-critical applications because of its inherent fault-tolerant feature. Therefore, the attention of many researchers has been paid to develop different techniques for detecting various fault types of multiphase induction motors, to securely switch the control mode of the multiphase drive system to its post-fault operation mode. Therefore, several fault detection methods have been researched and adapted; one of these methods is the indices-based fault detection technique. This technique was firstly introduced to detect open-phase fault of multiphase induction motors. The main advantage of this technique is that its mathematical formulation is straightforward and can easily be understood and implemented. In this paper, the study of the indices-based fault detection technique has been extended to test its applicability in detecting some other stator and rotor fault types of multiphase induction motors, namely, open-phase, open-switch, bad connection and broken rotor bar faults. Experimental and simulation validations of this technique are also introduced using a 1 kW prototype symmetrical six-phase induction motor.

Multiphase electric motors in cooperation with power semiconductor converters belong to the future of electric drives. This is because of their better properties compared to three-phase motors, such as better fault tolerance. How a multiphase motor will behave in a fault state is very important when using such motors in EV and HEV. This is the basis of the research in this article; we investigate the options for operating a five-phase motor in a fault condition in order to improve the drive qualities during fault operation. The complete mathematical expressions of the five-phase induction motor model in the normal operation as well as in fault operation and also the control modification to improve the properties of the drive are presented. The new five-phase field-oriented control is next described, which improves the drive qualities in four-phase operation and is the first fundamental aspect of the study. Another important aspect of the project is the development of a specific control on a real motor, followed by measurements of properties of a five-phase motor in normal and fault operation of one phase without and with control modification to enhance drive characteristics. The qualities and appropriateness of employing a five-phase motor as a drive in EV and HEV are then determined by comparing these results. Finally, a comparison of motor attributes is shown with and without control adjustment.

Abstract The subject of this paper is the control possibility of the multiphase cage induction motors having number of phases greater than 3. These motors have additional properties for speed control that distinguish them from the standard 3 phase motors: operation at various sequences of supplying voltages due to the inverter control and possible operation with few open-circuited phases. For each supply sequence different no load speeds at the same frequency can be obtained. This feature extends the motor application for miscellaneous drive demands including vector or scalar control. This depends mainly on the type of the stator winding for a given number of phases, since the principle of motor operation is based on co-operation of higher harmonics of magnetic field. Examples of operation are presented for a 9-phase motor, though general approach has been discussed. This motor was fed by a voltage source inverter at field oriented control with forced currents. The mathematical model of the motor was reduced to the form incorporating all most important physical features and appropriate for the control law formulation. The operation was illustrated for various supply sequences for “healthy” motor and for the motor operating at one phase broken. The obtained results have shown that parasitic influence of harmonic fields interaction has negligible influence on motor operation with respect to the useful coupling for properly designed stator winding.

Electric mining haul trucks are one of the most challenging applications of power electronics in automotive systems. This paper presents some advances of AC drive system with multiphase induction motor in high power mining haul trucks used in the special operation and environment. It is established that the use of inverter-fed dual three-phase (DTP) induction motors with vector control is the preferred solution to reach the required high starting torque, widely variable-speed range and good dynamic performance required by these vehicles. Key technologies and design features for the drive systems under extreme operating conditions are discussed.

Induction motor is the backbone of current industrial applications. Multiphase machines can handle high power application easily. With the use of five-phase induction motor, advantage of both multi-phase and induction motor can be achieved. This paper presents analysis of five-phase seven level-based Induction motor system fed by packed U-cell based inverter. Modelling of five-phase induction motor is done with the help of mathematical equations using d-q axis transformation. Inverter voltage output comes to be approximately sinusoidal with 18.07% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Induction motor with specified parameters is simulated under no-load condition and attains steady state conditions after transient state.

Until very recently, the fault tolerance in multiphase electric drives could only be achieved after fault localization and a subsequent modification of the control scheme. This scenario was profoundly shaken with the appearance of the natural fault tolerance, as the control reconfiguration was not required anymore. Even though the control strategy was highly simplified, it was still necessary to detect the open-phase fault (OPF) in order to derate the electric drive and safeguard its integrity. This work goes one step beyond and suggests the use of an automatic fault-tolerant control (AFTC) that also avoids the detection of the OPF. The AFTC combines the natural fault-tolerant capability with a self-derating technique, finally obtaining a hardware-free software-free fault tolerance. This achievement changes completely the rules of the game in the design of fault-tolerant drives, easing at the same time their industrial application. Experimental results confirm in a six-phase induction motor (IM) drive that the proposed AFTC provides a simple and safe manner to add further reliability to multiphase electric drives.

These harmonics are higher than essential frequencies and cause Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) which increases the rms current and generates more warmth in the load. Numerous techniques are used to suppress the harmonics to limit the warmth in the load. Another procedure is utilized in this work to limit THD and the method to beat the low exhibition of a traditional PWM (pulse width tweak) control. In this work, the desired output voltage is accomplished by contrasting the desired sinusoidal waveform (adjusting signal) with a high frequency three-sided waveform (transporter signal). Industrial applications demands high force and long life expectancy motor drives. Three phase motor drives have restricted force density consequently Multiphase motor drives are better solutions for high force density and substantial loads. In this work a 12 level cycloconverter is designed to drive three Phase load. The loads used in the industries almost nonlinear loads like motors. Thusly, because of these nonlinear loads extra harmonics incited at the output of the 12 level cycloconverter drive with major frequency. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the development of novel multiphase induction motor (MPIM) with copper die cast rotor in the drive system of electric propulsion vehicles (EPV). It is estimated that the manufacturers are concerned about high torque,Efficiency, motor life, energy conservation and high thermal tolerance. To ensure maximum torque and efficiency with multiphase winding and copper die cast technology to increasing high thermal tolerance, life, energy conversations. On other hand, it is very important of EPV application. Design/methodology/approach The focus of the investigation is threefold: the modified method carried out on MPIM both stator and rotor can overcome the current scenario problem facing by electric vehicles manufacture and developed perfect suitable electric motor for EPV applications. The design and simulation carried out finite element method (FEM) that was more accurate calculations. Finally developed prototype model of MPIM with copper die cast are discussed with conventional three phase Die casting Induction motor. Findings The paper confirmed the multiphase copper die-cast rotor induction motor (MDCrIM) is providing better performance than conventional motor. Proposed motor can bring additional advantage like heat tolerances, long life and energy conversations. Originality/value The experiments confirmed the MDCIM suitable for EPV Applications. The modified MDCIM of both stator and rotor are giving better result and good performance compared to conventional method.

Recently, several research papers have addressed multiphase induction motor (IM) drives, owing to their several benefits compared to the three-phase motors, including increasing the torque pulsations frequency and reducing the rotor harmonic current losses. Thus, designing a robust controller to ensure the proper operation of such motors became a challenge. The present study reports the design of an effective second-order sliding mode control (SO-SMC) approach for a five-phase IM drive. The proposed control approach finds its strongest justification for the problem of using a law of nonlinear control robust to the system uncertainties of the model without affecting the system’s simplicity. The formulation of the proposed SO-SMC approach is a prescribed process to ensure the stability and proper dynamics of the five-phase IM. A detailed stability analysis is also presented for this purpose. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, the five-phase IM drive is tested under different dynamic situations, including load changes and system uncertainties. The presented numerical results prove the ability of the designed SO-SMC to handle high system nonlinearities and maintain high robustness against uncertainties.

This paper aims to develop an innovative sensorless control approach for a five-phase induction motor (IM) drive. The operation principle of the sensorless scheme is based on the sliding mode theory, within which a sliding mode observer (SMO) estimates the speed and rotor resistance simultaneously. The operation methodology of the proposed control technique is formulated using the mathematical model of the machine and the two-time-scale approach. The observation technique offers a simple and robust solution of speed and rotor resistance estimation for the sensorless control approach of the multiphase drive. The paper considers the five-phase induction motor (IM) as a case study; however, the proposed control algorithm can be employed by different types of multiphase machines. To test the applicability of the proposed sensorless control approach, the drive performance is firstly validated using MATLAB/Simulink-based simulation. Then, the simulation results are verified using real-time simulation and experimentally using TMS320C32 DSP-based control board. The obtained results confirm and validate the ability of the proposed control procedure in achieving a robust dynamic performance of the drive against the system uncertainties such as parameter variation.

Multiphase electric drives have been developed due to numerous advantages offered by those machines when it compared with the conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase motor drives are considered for applications, where the reduction of power per phase for both motor and inverter and high reliability are required. High performance control techniques are developed for multi-phase drives. The performances of the high performance controller and flux observers may be degraded during the operation. Since the parameters of Induction Motor (IM) varies continuously due to temperature variation and heating. Thus it is significantly important that the value of rotor resistance is continuously observed online and adapted by the control algorithm in order to avoid detuning effects. The efficiency and performance of an induction motor drive system can be improved by online observation of the critical parameters, such as the rotor resistance and stator resistance. Among the parameters of IM, rotor resistance is a decisive one for flux estimation, and also the stator resistance becomes critical in the low-speed operation condition. This paper presents a new online estimation method for the rotor resistance of the IM for sliding mode observer. This method generally based on theories of variable structure and is useful in order to adjust online unknown parameters (load torque and rotor resistance). The presented non-linear compensator afford a voltage inputs on the articulation of stator current and rotor speed measurements, and engender an estimates for the unknown parameters simultaneously, the non-measurable state variables (rotor flux and derivatives of the stator current and voltage) that converge to the corresponding true values. Under the persistent excitation condition, the proposed method estimates the actual value of rotor resistance, which guarantees the exact estimation of the rotor flux. Non-linear Backstepping control and adaptive sliding mode observer of a five-phase induction motor drive is presented. The accuracy and validity of the method is verified by MATLAB simulation model.

In applications such as multiphase motor drives, classical predictive control strategies are characterized by a variable switching frequency which adds high harmonic content and ripple in the stator currents. This paper proposes a model predictive current control adding a modulation stage based on a switching pattern with the aim of generating a fixed switching frequency. Hence, the proposed controller takes into account the prediction of the two adjacent active vectors and null vector in the ( α - β ) frame defined by space vector modulation in order to reduce the (x-y) currents according to a defined cost function at each sampling period. Both simulation and experimental tests for a six-phase induction motor drive are provided and compared to the classical predictive control to validate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

The developed torque with minimum oscillations is one of the difficulties faced when designing drive systems. High ripple torque contents result in fluctuations and acoustic noise that impact the life of a drive system. A multiphase machine can offer a better alternative to a conventional three-phase machine in faulty situations by reducing the number of interruptions in industrial operation. This paper proposes a unique fault-tolerant control strategy for a five-phase induction motor. The paper considers a variable-voltage, variable-frequency control five-phase induction motor in one- and two-phase open circuit faults. The four-phase and three-phase operation modes for these faults are utilized with a modified voltage reference signal. The suggested remedial strategy is the method for compensating a faulty open phase of the machine through a modified reference signal. A modified voltage reference signal can be efficiently executed by a carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) system. A test bench for the execution of the fault-tolerant control strategy of the motor drive system is presented in detail along with the experimental results.

The article considers the areas of applying multiphase induction motors. Their advantages against three phase motors have become the main reason for employing them in multiphase drives. The paper deals with the six-phase induction motor having two similar three phase windings in the stator shifted by 30 degrees in space and three phase windings in the rotor. Differential equations for this motor are presented and transformed to dq synchronous reference frame. The transformed equations are expressed in a matrix form and solved by MATLAB software using the Dormand-Prince (ode45) method. The transient characteristics of the torque, speed and current of the six-phase induction motor are calculated and discussed. Santrauka Nagrinėjamos daugiafazių variklių naudojimo sritys, pabrėžiami pagrindiniai jų privalumai lyginant su trifaziais varikliais. Nurodomos daugiafazių variklių teigiamos savybės, lemiančios jų naudojimą šiuolaikinėse elektros pavarose. Nagrinėjamas šešiafazis asinchroninis variklis. Jo statoriuje yra dvi vienodos trifazės apvijos, kurių magnetinės ašys skiriasi 30 erdvinių laipsnių kampu, o rotoriuje yra trifazė apvija. Transformuotos lygtys užrašomos matricos pavidalu ir sprendžiamos MATLAB programiniu paketu taikant Dormand-Prince (ode45) metodą. In this work, we study vector control and sliding mode control of series-connected five-phase two asynchronous machines supplied with a three levels inverter. After presentation of multiphase machines, we worked out the mathematical model of five phase asynchronous machine supplied with voltage inverter. Application of Park transformation reduces considerably the mathematical model of machine. After, we applied vector control and sliding mode control to the five-phase induction machine. After that, we study a multi-machine system which comport five-phase two asynchronous machines supplied with a single voltage inverter. In the last, we had the independent vector control and the sliding mode control of series-connected five-phase two asynchronous machines. We observe that an appropriate transposition of phase’s order permits an independent control of two machines.

Abstract. Background: Significant economic growth in many countries of the world can contribute to an increase in the speed of movement of modern and fundamentally new vehicles. This will increase the turnover of goods during the transportation of goods, revive international trade, increase the comfort of passengers and reduce their travel time. Aim: The solution of this problem is the development and wide application of high-speed magnetic-levitation transport (HSMLT) with linear traction engines. It is promising to use linear induction motors (LIM) for the HSMLT drive, which can have various design versions. Linear induction motors come with a longitudinal, transverse and longitudinal-transverse closure of the magnetic flux. LIM inductors can be installed on both high-speed transport crews and in the HSMLT track structure, as it was done in the People’s Republic of China, where express trains on magnetic suspension connect Shanghai with the airport and reliably operate for more than 10 years. The main elements of the inductor of a linear induction motor are a magnetic core (ferromagnetic core) a multiphase (usually three-phase) winding. With the development of high-speed magnetic-levitation transport, the issues of improving the manufacturing technology of various HSMLT devices, including the methods for producing inductors of linear induction motors, will become increasingly relevant. Traditionally, LIM inductors are assembled from pre-manufactured individual parts. Methods: An integral technology for manufacturing inductors of linear induction motors for high-speed magnetic-levitation transport is proposed and considered by the method of spraying materials onto a substrate through replaceable stencils. The new technology eliminates the alternate manufacture of individual assemblies and parts and their subsequent assembly to obtain a finished product. A method for determining the size of stencils for manufacturing one of the inductor variants of a linear induction motor is proposed as an example. Conclusion: Integral manufacturing technology is promising for the creation of high-speed magnetic-levitation transport.

Purpose This paper aims to deal with direct torque controller when the five-phase induction motor drive in faulty operation. Precisely, open-phase fault condition is contemplated. Also, the DTC is combined with a speed-adaptive variable-structure observer based on sliding mode observer. Design methodology/approach Two novel features are presented. First, the concept of the virtual voltage vector is presented, which eliminates low-frequency harmonic currents and simplifies analysis. Second, speed information is introduced into the selection of the inverter states. Findings Direct torque control (DTC) is largely used in traditional three-phase drives as a backup to rotor-stator flux-oriented methods. The classic DTC strategy was primarily designed on the base of hysteresis controllers to control two independent variables (speed, torque and flux). Due to the additional degrees of freedom offered by multiphase machine, extensive works have been extended on the ensemble five-phase drives in healthy operation. In addition, the ability to continue the operation in faulty conditions is considering one of the main advantages of multiphase machines. One can find in the literature different approaches treating this subject. The applicability of DTC after the appearing of a fault has not been enclosed in the literature. Originality/value Theoretical development is presented in details followed by simulation results using Matlab/Simulink to analyze the performance of the drive, comparing with the behavior during healthy situation.

In this paper, we study sliding mode control of series-connected five-phase two asynchronous machines supplied with a three levels inverter. After presentation of multiphase machines, we worked out the mathematical model of five phase asynchronous machine supplied with voltage inverter. Application of Park transformation reduces considerably the mathematical model of machine. After, we applied vector control and sliding mode control to the five-phase induction machine. After that, we study a multi-machine system, which comport five-phase two asynchronous machines supplied with a single voltage inverter.In the last, we had the sliding mode control of series-connected five-phase two asynchronous machines. Simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of the control strategy. We observe that an appropriate transposition of phase’s order permits an independent control of two machines.

Model predictive current control (MPCC) has recently become a viable alternative for multiphase electric drives, because it easily exploits the inherent advantages of multi-phase machines. However, the prediction in MPCC requires a high number of voltage vectors (VVs), being therefore computationally demanding. In that regard, this paper proposes a computationally efficient MPCC of an asymmetrical six-phase induction machine drive (ASIMD) that reduces the number of VVs used for prediction. By using the characteristics of the deadbeat control (DB), the proposed method obtains a reference voltage vector (RVV), where its position will serve as a reference and integrates the MPCC scheme. Only 4 out of 13 predictions are needed to determine the best VV, dramatically reducing the algorithm computation. Experimental results for a six-phase case study compare the standard MPCC with the suggested method, confirming that deadbeat model predictive current control (DB-MPCC) shows that the execution time can be shortened by 48.8% and successfully improve the motor performance and efficiency.

Abstract The multiphase induction motor can be a highly preferable choice for the EV application, where the reliability and safety of passengers are one of the major concerns. The main objective of this article is to design high performance fault tolerant control of five phase induction motor (FPIM) drive to enhance the dynamic performance under healthy, faulty and fault tolerant modes of operation under arbitrary open phase fault condition. First, a simple method of modeling open phase fault in any phase of the FPIM drive is proposed. The most frequently occurring open phase faults due to the power electronics switch failure in the inverters are considered for the analysis. A generalized method of modeling arbitrary open phase fault in FPIM drive using back EMF calculations in faulty phase is suggested. The developed method utilizes the same transformation matrix for any open phase fault such that the minimum modification in control strategy is required under fault condition. Thereafter, the control technique is detailed. The rotor field oriented control (RFOC) of FPIM with fuzzy logic speed controller is developed to generate optimal torque reference. The design of FLC is detailed with fine-tuned scaling factor, rule base and membership function to obtain robust performance of the drive under healthy and fault tolerant modes of operation. The complete RFOC scheme for 2 HP FPIM drive is built in MATLAB/SIMULINK incorporating fuzzy logic based controller to verify its performance. The comparison of transient and steady state response and robustness (to the load disturbance as well as fault) obtained using developed fuzzy logic based controller with those using conventional PI controller is presented to prove the efficiency of the suggested controller under various speed torque profiles. The effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy based fault tolerant controller for FPIM drive is validated using OP4510 controller based real time HIL simulator.

Multi-phase motors have recently replaced three-phase induction motors in a variety of applications due to the numerous benefits they provide, and the absence of speed sensors promotes induction motors with variable speed drives. Sensorless speed control minimizes unnecessary speed encoder cost, reduces maintenance, and improves the motor drive’s reliability. The performance comparison of the fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC) with adaptive fuzzy proportional integral derivative (AFPID) control methods for sensorless speed control of six-phase induction motors was analyzed in this study, and the proposed control system has an advantage for multiphase machines, specifically six-phase induction motors (IMs) in this study, as they are the current active research area for electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, aerospace, ship propulsion, and high-power applications. The speed control of a six-phase induction motor was performed by using an AFPID controller and FSMC. The comparative performance analysis was based on sensorless speed control of the six-phase induction motor. A proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is commonly employed as it is used to eliminate oscillations, but it has several drawbacks, such as taking a long time to decrease the error and stabilize the system at constant speed. The fuzzy type-2 and PID controllers were hybridized so as to obtain the advantages of both to enhance the system performance. Finally, the comparison result revealed that the FSMC preforms significantly better by achieving good tracking performance. The control technique maintains the sliding mode approach’s robustness while providing reduced overshoots with a smooth control action, and the FSMC revealed good dynamic response under load variations when compared to the AFPID controller.

This paper is a comparative study of the eleven-phase induction machine’s performance when used as a prototype and fed sinusoidal pulse-width-modulation (SPWM) with a low switching frequency, selective harmonic elimination (SHE), and single pulse modulation (SPM) techniques. The comparison depends on voltage/frequency controls for the same phase of voltage applied on the machine terminals for all previous techniques. The comparative study covers torque ripple, stator and harmonic currents, and motor efficiency.

Multiphase drives have been presented as potential replacements for conventional three-phase machines, primarily because of their propensity to operate faultlessly. Due to the various stator phase arrangements, standard fault detection techniques are insufficiently applicable and cannot be used to diagnose faults in the various configurations of multiphase machines in closed-loop applications. The current study proposes an effective online diagnostic technique based on the computing and tracking of a significant severity factor, which is defined as the ratio of the zero, negative, and positive voltage symmetrical components employing a short-time least-square Prony algorithm (STLSP). In this study, the asymmetrical six-phase induction motor (ASPIM) was controlled by a model predictive control (MPC) algorithm, an attractive control scheme for the regulation of multiphase electric drives, since it easily exploits their inherent advantages. This article addresses stator faults in ASPIMs. The effectiveness of the suggested strategy was confirmed experimentally for various operating conditions in both steady and transient states.

In this paper, a fault-tolerant three-phase induction drive based on field-oriented control is studied, and an analytical approach is proposed to elucidate the limitations of FOC in flux-torque regulation from the controller perspective. With an open-phase fault, the disturbance terms appear in the controller reference frame and degrade the controller performance when operating in a d-q plane with DC quantities. In addition, the hardware reconfiguration, which is essential to operate faulted three-phase drives, causes substantial change in the way the control parameters vd, vq are reflected onto the machine terminals. An accurate understanding of the feedforward term, by considering the open-phase fault and the hardware modifications, is provided to re-enable the FOC in presence of an open-phase fault. Furthermore, the concept of feedforward term derivation is generically extended to cover multiphase induction drives encountering an open-phase fault whereby no hardware reconfiguration is intended. The proposed method is explained based on a symmetrical six-phase induction and can be extended to drives with a higher number of phases. The effectiveness of the proposed derivation method, which is required to form a feedforward fault-tolerant controller, is verified and compared through the simulation and experiment, ensuring smooth operation in postfault mode.

The use of multiphase electric drives in industrial applications has increased in the last few years. These machines’ advantages over the three-phase system make them appropriate for harsh working situations. To increase their inherent reliability, some authors have been working in sensorless control schemes, where the absence of an encoder ensures proper system performance. Nevertheless, these sensorless control systems present some problems due to the uncertainties of the parameters. In this regard, using extended Kalman filters overcomes this situation, since Kalman filters consider the system error and measurement error in the estimation process. However, when the three-phase Kalman filters are extended to the five-phase case of study, the complexity of the problem increases substantially. In this work, the authors propose an extended Kalman filter, which discomposes the original state equation, reducing the complexity of the estimation stage. In addition, the system suppresses the third-harmonic injection, which enhances the overall phase-current quality.

The usage of multiphase electrical drives expands the operation possibilities of electrical machines and opens new directions of research on inverter-fed electrical machines. With an increasing number of phases, the standard approach of the electromagnetic design of machines has to be generalized to m-phase systems, which is not usually respected in the literature focused on electric machine design, and it is rarely published. This paper summarizes the specific problems linked with the design of machines with different numbers of phases, focusing on the winding design and the calculation of equivalent circuit parameters. In addition to the direct effect of different numbers of phases, the impact of injecting higher order time harmonic components on the electromagnetic design of electric machines is analyzed. The obtained analytical results are verified by the measurement of a nine-phase experimental induction motor.

The main advantages of multi-winding (multiphase) induction machines include reducing torque ripple, decreasing rotor harmonics losses, reducing the current per phase without increasing the voltage per phase, reducing the current harmonics of the DC voltage source, and high fault tolerance. The authors propose a theoretical description for the harmonic content of the DC-link current, magnetomotive force, and electromagnetic torque of a multi-winding induction machine (IM), and an account of the interaction of the time harmonics for the power supply and the spatial harmonics for winding functions is presented. The proposed theoretical analysis has made it possible to substantiate supply-winding schemes for the compensation of higher harmonics (6th and 12th in the DC-link current and the IM’s electromagnetic torque) and the improvement of the electromagnetic and electromechanical compatibility of the multi-winding machine, which are justified according to the proposed theoretical description. Further, a schematic solution for the multi-winding induction motor with electronic changing of the pole number is proposed to provide a reduction in speed ripples at low rotation speeds. This decrease is ensured by increasing the number of pole pairs and increasing the frequency of the supply voltage. Mathematical models of multi-winding switch control-based induction machines are developed using the method of average voltages in the integration step for an investigation of electromagnetic and electromechanical processes. It is shown that the developed models are distinguished by high speed of response and accuracy. This is confirmed by the comparative analysis using known methods and models in the Matlab environment, as well as a comparison of the simulation results with the known results of physical experiments. The results of mathematical modeling show that the use of a multi-winding IM with appropriate supply-winding schemes stands to significantly reduce the ripples of the IM’s electromagnetic torque and DC-link current in the case of using six-step voltage source inverters. This makes this type of inverter suitable for use in a frequency-controlled electric drive as an alternative to using a PWM inverter, which has a negative influence on the IM’s state.

Power converters generate switching common mode voltage (CMV) through the pulse width modulation (PWM). Several problems occur in the drive systems due to the generated CMV. These problems can be dangerous to the insulation and bearings of the electric machine windings. In recent years, many modulation methods have been developed to reduce the CMV in multiphase machines. Symmetrical nine-phase machines with single-neutral are considered in this paper. In this case, conventional PWM uses eight active vectors of different magnitudes in combination with two zero states in a switching cycle, and this generates maximum CMV. This paper proposes two PWM schemes to reduce the CMV in such a system. The first scheme is called active zero state (AZS). It replaces the zero vectors with suitable opposite active vectors. The second scheme uses ten large active vectors during switching and is called SVM-10L. Compared with conventional strategies, the AZS reduces the peak CMV by 22.2%, and the SVM-10L reduces the peak CMV by 88.8%. Moreover, this paper presents a carrier-based implementation of the proposed schemes to simplify the implementation. The proposed schemes are assessed using simulations and experimental studies for an induction motor load under different case studies.

Multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely utilized in high power and high reliability electric propulsion systems. In electric propulsion systems, the motor may work at a low efficiency area for a long time, which increases energy consumption and reduces cruise range. In order to improve motor efficiency, this paper proposes a multiphase motor structure. The stator winding of proposed motor consists of three independent windings that have different rated speed and torque. In this paper, winding match mode, operation characteristic and efficiency characteristic are analyzed, and a torque distribution strategy with optimal efficiency is given. The results show that in propeller load such as electric aircrafts and ships, the proposed motor can reduce motor total loss and temperature rise in a drive cycle, which improves system efficiency, reliability and fault tolerance performance.

Resumen
The work is devoted to the study of the possibilities of using the predictive torque control system instead of the currently widely used direct torque control system. Aspects of using the system of direct torque control of an induction motor are considered and it is found that its significant disadvantage is the variable frequency of semiconductor switches. As a further development of the direct torque control system, a predictive torque control system is analyzed, which contains blocks for estimating unmeasured state variables, as well as predicting the state of a dynamic system when applying possible control signals. The systems were compared by mathematical modeling in Matlab / Simulink.
