Under inlärning beskrivs olika utvecklingspsykologiska teorier. Under diskussionen framkommer fler intressanta lärande exempel.

Self-independent learning is activity helping for learners to develop their responsibility, independence and ability to orient and understand the essence of activity. These are the main criteria for planning career and perceive long life learning concept and need. Project goal – to create programming product for self-independent learning, which could use video and audio material for learning purposes and give possibility to learn for those who hasn‘t approach to internet. The programming product first of all is very actual for learners who live far-off regions and for disable people. The programm allows to change learning schedule at home, learning material given through lectures is easy to remember. Programm is actual for learning institutions – it reduces teacher‘s contact and consulting hours, and teachers could spend more time on research work. The project itself could serve as a motivation to use audio and video material in various teaching profile institutions. Programm was developed in Borland Delphi 7 programming language by requirements of customer.

Resumen

Is it possible, and suitable, to use multimedia in classic literature studies at Swedish upper secondary school? What alternatives are there?  Is there any foundation in the curriculum for an expanded conception of text as in multimedia?  Will the conception literacy support use of multimedia in classic literature studies, and in what ways? How do we generally look upon the definition text, is it only printed letters, or something more? To get an answer to the questions we decided to examine a number of theories, Gardner’s theory about the different intelligences, the conception literacy and the expanded text concept. In these three theories we took our starting-point for the following work. The main subjects became two interactive sights on Internet and one CD-ROM, all containing classic literature. Our previous knowledge in this subject field was very meager.  This work has given us an opportunity to discover some of the multimedia that is available, and the result we have come to is that multimedia absolutely belongs in studies of classic literature as well as in other subjects. We think it is necessary to pay attention to multimedia in the future education, because of the text flow in the society. Text flow is much more than just printed letters, for example web sites with further more experiences such as pictures/paintings and music, which makes a comprehensive picture. As we see it, this conclusion has support in the theories.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to design and implement multimedia presentation authoring and browsing in multimedia database systems, based on a two-tier client/server architecture. The major approaches included: (i) Build a client/server multimedia presentation authoring and browsing environment; (ii) Allow query-by-image image retrieval and domain-based browsing through the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) between the Java socket at the client and the Unix socket at the server; (iii) Allow the multimedia presentation authoring by unifying the temporal, spatial and spatio-temporal relations among various media items into Multimedia Augmented Transition Network (MATN) model; (iv) Support the user interaction during the authoring process; (v) Visualize the presentation based on the created MATN models. As a result, this methodology provided users a flexible environment for heterogeneous media data retrieval and multimedia presentation authoring in multimedia database systems.

Resumen
Multimedia transmission is the effective way of transmitting multimedia elements (comprising voice, audio, video, data etc) from one place to the other via internet enabled protocols and other means. The term 'effective' is used because multimedia transmission is a nightmare if the conveyance is not smooth, seamless and efficient. Over time, the world has seen tremendous improvement that started from the era of the first generation of multimedia generation to the point of multimedia transmission. Much has been said and done in this area and the world has become a connected enterprise because of the transmission of multimedia. In spite of these successes that have been recorded in these areas, there are still many challenges facing multimedia transmission. What determines the progress of technology globally is the trends of evolution that multimedia transmission has gone through. An important challenge facing multimedia transmission is one that has been neglected for a long time. There has been deep neglect of the devices that are used in transmission while much emphasis has been on the protocols and the software that are being developed for multimedia transmission. Devices play a very important role in the realization of seamless transmission of media. Lately, the world seems to have realized the fact that devices that do the actual transmission needs more attention. These devices are the ones that do the distribution and the transmission of the multimedia streams or signals. This has been highlighted in a recent research study that was referenced in the Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning that showed that the expectations of meeting the world's target on multimedia has been reduced by half because of problems arising from the inefficiency of multimedia devices and not really from the protocol perspective as earlier perceived. It is inline with the above that this research was titled "improving multimedia transmission through enhanced multimedia devices". Multimedia devices are the end to end units that are used in multimedia transmission. This research investigated the current devices that are being used, their deficiencies and the reasons that make them unstable for multimedia transmission. It focused on the real time multimedia transmission over the internet protocol (IP) through enhancing limited capabilities of the current multimedia devices. This will make way for new studies into newer devices that are better designed for the efficient multimedia flow. It will assure better quality end-to-end solutions in the area of multimedia distribution and transmission. This research is broad enough to cover most of the major areas of multimedia transmission and cut across several industries and technologies. These might include industries that specialize in internet telephony; design and manufacture multimedia devices and multimedia technologies. Despite the huge number of fields that this research cut across, the focus remained unchanged in highlighting this challenge and proffering a solution through enhanced end to end multimedia elements. It is hoped that this research work will contribute to the solution of this area of challenge and bring to fore the work that should be done in this regard. The advantages of improved multimedia transmission cannot be over emphasized as there will be a tremendous reduction in the cost of long distance communication globally and smoother media transmission which makes use of the readily available internet protocols. Tansley, Robert Hugh. "The multimedia thesaurus : adding a semantic layer to multimedia information". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2000. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/253833/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The digital computer has greatly increased our capacity for storing and accessing information. The internet, and particularly the World Wide Web, have vastly increased the amount of information available to us. Information retrieval and hypermedia research has greatly reduced the time and effort required to fulfill a searcher's information need; however, problems still remain. To access multimedia information, text metadata must usually be assigned to the multimedia objects, requiring an (often prohibitively) large amount of time and effort. Alternatively, some systems use low-level features of the media to allow a searcher to find objects similar to a query object. Such features cannot always identify two media objects depicting or representing the same real-world concept; in the case of images, different camera angles and lighting conditions mean that semantically similar images are visually very different. Additionally, semantic relationships between objects may not be expressed. This thesis presents a way of addressing these problems by drawing on the field of semiology, in which a symbolic object has two parts: That which is being represented (in the plane of content), and the symbolic object doing the representing (in the plane of expression). A semantic layer is introduced holding real-world concepts, and connections to the multimedia objects that represent them. Knowledge about these concepts can be introduced by connecting them with semantic relationships. A prototype multimedia information system incorporating a semantic layer feature, the multimedia thesaurus, is introduced. The construction and use of a museum application is described, and used to evaluate the semantic layer technique. Finally, some reflections on these findings and some suggested future directions for the work are presented.

Resumen
Asmultimedia-sharing websites are becoming increasingly popular, content providers get more concerned about the illegal distribution of their copyrighted contents. The recent content-based multimedia fingerprinting technology has evolved as an important tool for automatically detecting illegal copies of audio, image, and video signals. Multimedia fingerprints are signatures that are extracted from an audio, image, or video signal as a compact identifier of the signal. Therefore fingerprints should have enough discriminating ability to identify a multimedia object among others. At the same time they should be robust to modifications a multimedia signal might be subjected, such as compression, cropping, format change, scaling, and other signal processing operations. Robustness requires the fingerprints of a signal to only depend on the signals perceptual content and not on its format, size, quality, etc. This thesis proposes copy detection systems for audio and video signals and addresses the robustness as well as the discrimination ability of these systems. We first address audio fingerprinting and propose an algorithm that can detect small snippets of audio signals. Simulation results show that, the extracted fingerprints are robust to audio modifications including pitch shift and tempo change. For severe modifications that existing algorithms have poor detection rates (around 20%), our proposed algorithm yields detection rates above 80%. We then address video fingerprinting and propose an algorithm that extracts robust and discriminant binary fingerprints. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is faster and more accurate than the state-of-the-art with a high true positive rate of over 97% and a low false positive rate below 1%. Another challenge in multimedia fingerprinting is fingerprint retrieval, i.e. searching a huge fingerprint database (millions of fingerprints), for an accurate match for a query fingerprint in a fast fashion. We propose a fast and accurate Nearest Neighbour (NN) search algorithm for binary fingerprints (Hamming space). Tested on a very large database of 80 million images, we showed that the proposed algorithm is about 3 times faster than the state-of-the-art while at the same time it is 10 times more accurate.

Resumen
This thesis is concerned with the design and im plementation of a Relational Multimedia Database System, in short RMDBS. RMDBS is designed to efficiently use storage space and manipulate various kinds of data; attribute data, bit-m apped pictures, and program s in binary code. RMDBS is an integrated system which enables the user to manage and control operations on the different forms of data in a user friendly manner. This means that even nonexperienced users can work with the system. The work described in this thesis is novel in that a true multimedia database has been implemented within the framework of a traditional relational DBMS. Previous work in this area has concentrated either in building data base management systems for storing picture-based data or multimedia databases which are not true data base management systems. RMDBS is implemented using the Revelation data base management system.

This Master’s thesis deals with IMS architecture problems. This thesis describes its creation and progress, also structure of this architecture is mentioned. Text of this thesis describes function of the most important parts of the architecture, such as Proxy-CSCF, Interrogating-CSCF, Serving-CSCF and HSS. IMS architecture uses SIP protocol for establishment, maintenance and closing session and Diameter protocol for network management functions. That is why this thesis also describes characteristics of these two protocols. Next part of the thesis is focused on Open-source platform Open IMS Core and its installation. Open IMS Core platform was developed for testing IMS technologies within an internal project at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in Berlin. Nowadays it is used by major part of vendors and providers for testing their products and services. As a main theme of this thesis, there was made a simple network, which consists of three users. This network is established on fundamentals of IMS and it was made in Open IMS Core. So in one chapter is outlined a process of its creation. There is described a process of adding a user list to database server HSS. In the next part there are mentioned some information about setup of virtual IMS terminal. Eventually there are shown some possibilities of how to catch traffic in the network. In this chapter there are also state diagrams, which describe a process of registration of IMS terminal and also a process of establishment, maintenance and closing session.

Resumen
The purpose of this research is to present new methods of active and passive vibration control for flexible structures. The study includes: 1) passive viscoelastic damping treatment; 2 ) active vibration control using layered shape memory alloy (SMA); 3) combined application of viscoelastic damping treatment and SMA; 4) experiments. In order to maximize damping and save weight of the structure and cost, a partially covered double sandwich cantilever beam model has been presented. It is shown that the double sandwich beam is better than single sandwich beam for some conditions. To take into account of end loads effect of elastic structures such as robot arm or manipulator, a model of partially covered double sandwich cantilever beam with mass at free end is given and discussed. Also a more accurate model (Timoshenko model) is discussed. The experiments were done to verify the theoretical results. The active vibration control by means of layered shape memory alloy actuator is discussed. The layered structure is easy to implement in real application, especially for the existing structures. The control results are compared and discussed. The temperature effects are discussed. Also a model with combined application of viscoelastic damping treatment and shape memory alloy layer is presented. Both the vibration characteristics and control results are obtained and discussed. The vibration control results for different control schemes are compared and discussed. The temperature effects are also discussed

Lin, Lin. "Multimedia Data Mining and Retrieval for Multimedia Databases Using Associations and Correlations". Scholarly Repository, 2010. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/434.

Texto completo
Resumen
With the explosion in the complexity and amount of pervasive multimedia data, there are high demands of multimedia services and applications in various areas for people to easily access and distribute multimedia data. Facing with abundance multimedia resources but inefficient and rather old-fashioned keyword-based information retrieval approaches, a content-based multimedia information retrieval (CBMIR) system is required to (i) reduce the dimension space for storage saving and computation reduction; (ii) advance multimedia learning methods to accurately identify target semantics for bridging the semantics between low-level/mid-level features and high-level semantics; and (iii) effectively search media content for dynamical media delivery and enable the extensive applications to be media-type driven. This research mainly focuses on multimedia data mining and retrieval system for multimedia databases by addressing some main challenges, such as data imbalance, data quality, semantic gap, user subjectivity and searching issues. Therefore, a novel CBMIR system is proposed in this dissertation. The proposed system utilizes both association rule mining (ARM) technique and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) technique by taking into account both pattern discovery and statistical analysis. First, media content is represented by the global and local low-level and mid-level features and stored in the multimedia database. Second, a data filtering component is proposed in the system to improve the data quality and reduce the data imbalance. To be specific, the proposed filtering step is able to vertically select features and horizontally prune instances in multimedia databases. Third, a new learning and classification method mining weighted association rules is proposed in the retrieval system. The MCA-based correlation is used to generate and select the weighted N-feature-value pair rules, where the N varies from one to many. Forth, a ranking method independent of classifiers is proposed in the system to sort the retrieved results and put the most interesting ones on the top of the browsing list. Finally, a user interface is implemented in CBMIR system that allows the user to choose his/her interested concept, searches media based on the target concept, ranks the retrieved segments using the proposed ranking algorithm, and then displays the top-ranked segments to the user. The system is experimented with various high-level semantics from TRECVID benchmark data sets. TRECVID sound and vision data is a large data set, includes various types of videos, and has very rich semantics. Overall, the proposed system achieves promising results in comparison with the other well-known methods. Moreover, experiments that compare each component with some other famous algorithms are conducted. The experimental results show that all proposed components improve the functionalities of the CBMIR system, and the proposed system reaches effectiveness, robustness and efficiency for a high-dimensional multimedia database.

Resumen
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 91-94).
The advent of Internet Protocol (IP) based rich multimedia services and applications has seen rapid growth and adoption in recent years, with an equally increasing user base. Voice over IP (VoIP) and IP Television (IPTV) are key examples of services that are blurring the lines between traditional stove-pipe approach network infrastructures. In these, each service required a different network technology to be provisioned, and could only be accessed through a specific end user equipment (UE) technology. The move towards an all-IP core network infrastructure and the proliferation of multi-capability multi-interface user devices has spurred a convergence trend characterized by access to services and applications through any network, any device and anywhere.

Resumen
Human wellbeing, in a large component, relies on the harmony between the body and the mind. Unfortunately, we often miss or ignore important signals from our bodies, and sometimes this can negatively impact our health. Therefore, the use of intelligent systems that grasp such signals and convey them in an intuitive manner to our minds can result in great health benefits. In this Thesis, we introduce a family of multimedia technologies and techniques aimed at realizing such systems. We call them: Ubiquitous Biofeedback Multimedia Systems. Although the notion of clinical biofeedback has been around for years, we introduce the concept of Ubiquitous Biofeedback where the biofeedback operation is given geographical and temporal ubiquity attributes. A Ubiquitous Biofeedback reference model is introduced in the Thesis to provide an abstract structural representation of the various components at play in a typical non-clinical biofeedback environment. Two systems that implement the reference model’s components are presented. These systems implement the concept of Ubiquitous Biofeedback through the introduction of innovative stress management methods. An important component of these systems guides users through a relaxation routine. Therefore, a mathematical model is developed in the goal of personalizing the relaxation process. Its objective is to suggest relaxation techniques to a user during a stressful episode based on her or his preferences, history of what worked well and appropriateness for the context. The mental stress monitoring mechanism built into the Ubiquitous Biofeedback systems presented in this Thesis relies on the measurement of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Therefore, HRV based methods for tracking mental stress accumulation and acute manifestations during long term monitoring have been devised. Also, since HRV signals can be plagued by artifacts, several algorithms are contributed to the effort of correcting such occurrences.

Resumen
In this thesis, the architecture of an application-level Internet-fax gateway to facilitate multimedia messaging and to extend Internet services to the home or office is presented. We propose the use of the latest developments in the facsimile and Internet worlds, notably BFT support for Group3 protocols and MIME, for the exchange of multimedia messages (documents) between both environments as well as providing Internet e-mail, file transfer and Internet news services to fax users. Such services would be of most benefit to Internet novices and those users who do not have access to Internet via dialup/SLIP or Freenet facilities. The gateway services would allow a smooth transition into the widespread proliferation of multimedia communications. Implementation of such a gateway would make multimedia at home a very practical reality. A remote printer server, whose functionality is a subset of the proposed multimedia fax-Internet gateway was configured and setup at the MCRLab. This server became operational on February 3, 1994 and covers the local calling areas of the Ottawa/Hull region. This exercise gave us better insight into the practical aspects of the Internet Remote Printing Experiment. Further, a demo for inbound multimedia messaging was developed using the Binary File Transfer extensions to CCITT Group3 facsimile. This prototype serves as a proof of concept for the proposed gateway services.

Resumen
Distribution of video contents over the Internet has increased drastically over the past few years. With technological advancements and emergence of social media services, video content sharing has grown exponentially. An increased number of cyber crimes today belong to possession or distribution of illegal video contents over the Internet. Therefore, it is crucial for forensic examiners to have the capability of recovering and analyzing illegal video contents from seized storage devices. File carving is an advanced forensic technique used to recover deleted contents from a storage device even when there is no file system present. After recovering a deleted video file, its contents have to be analyzed manually in order to classify them. This is not only very stressful but also takes a large amount of time. In this thesis we propose a carving approach for streaming multimedia formats that allows forensic examiners to recover individual frames of a video file as images. The contents of these images then can be classified using existing techniques for forensic analysis of image sets. A carving tool based on this approach is developed for MPEG-1 video files. A number of experiments are conducted to evaluate performance of the tool. For each experiment an MPEG-1 file with different encoding parameters is used. Moreover, each experiment contains 18 runs and with each run chunk size of the input MPEG-1 file is varied in order to create different amount of disk fragmentation For video only MPEG-1 files, 87.802 % frames are fully recovered when the chunk size is equal to 124 KB. Where as in the case of MPEG-1 files containing both audio and video data 90.55 % frames are fully recovered when the chunk size is 132 KB.

Resumen
Context-awareness is a hot topic in mobile computing currently. A lot of importance is being attached to facilitating the user of various mobile computing devices to provide services that are more “user-centric”. One aspect of context-awareness is to perceive variations in available resources, and to make decisions based on the feedback to enable applications to automatically adapt to the current environment. For Voice over IP (VoIP) software phones (softphones), variations in network performance lead to fluctuations in the quality of the communication. Therefore, by making these softphones more adaptive to the network environment will, to some extent, mask such fluctuations. Dynamic voice and video adaptation derives from the fact that different coder-decoders (CODEC) have different characteristics, even the same CODECs with a different configuration can behave quite differently, in terms of bandwidth consumption, packet size, etc. Minisip is a VoIP client application which was implemented on and targeted for a Linux platform. One of my tasks was to port Minisip to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, running on an HP IPAQ Pocket PC H5550. Such handheld computer enables the user to communication while they are moving about, thus increasing the probability that the characteristics of the network connection will change. Building upon this port, the next task was to add dynamic voice and video CODEC adaptation. Dynamic voice and video CODEC adaptation on Minisip poses several challenges, for example, in what way can the network performance be determined and what adaptation strategy can achieve high call quality while making efficient utilization of available network resources. In order to make the proper design choices, several estimation models will be discussed, these are used to determine an efficient, un-intrusive, and light weight means of dynamic CODEC selection within Minisip. This thesis only implemented audio CODEC adaptation of Minisip, and the evaluation of the resulting prototype shows that such dynamic adaptation is both feasible and practical; further more, video CODEC adaptation would be a more significant extension to this work in the future.

Multimedia - the integration under computer control of text, still and moving images and sound, as well as the integration at another level of broadcasting, publishing and information technology - has already begun to change, and is doubtless about to change even further, the way in which information is presented, whether for education and training, business or pleasure. As with every new form of communication in its early stages of development, multimedia will inevitably go through a period of unexpected discoveries, but also of experimentation and consequent mistakes. One of the main aims of this thesis is to attempt to show, indirectly and directly, that the number of potential mistakes in the area of the use of sound in multimedia applications can be reduced by approaching the subject in an informed way, that is, by calling on the growing literature on the subject. Essentially, the thesis is therefore a critical review of the relevant literature, combined with some theoretical conclusions, and a practical guide to sound for the multimedia designer/producer. This practical guide is developed fully in the final chapter, after looking in detail at speech, music, sound effects and some other factors bearing on the subject.

Students studying foreign languages often wish to enjoy authentic foreign-language content - for example, foreign-language videos and comics. Existing means of presenting this content, however, are suboptimal from the perspective of language learning. We have developed a pair of tools that aim to help learners acquire the foreign language while enjoying authentic, foreign-language material. One tool is Smart Subtitles, which help learners learn vocabulary while watching videos. Our user evaluations have shown that Smart Subtitles help learners learn vocabulary more effectively than a popular approach for learning from video (dual subtitles). The other tool is a grammar visualization which illustrates the grammatical structure of sentences. This grammar visualization can be embedded into a number of language-learning applications. This includes a foreign-language manga reader we have built, which aims to help learners learn vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation while reading comics and manga. Our study for the grammar visualization shows that it helps monolinguals arrive at more accurate translations if we have an oracle taking the best translation of all, though there was no significant improvement in the average translation quality.

Resumen
The use of interactive multimedia within live performance is now well established and a significant body of exciting and sophisticated work has been produced. However, almost all work in the field seems to start by creating at least some of the software and hardware systems that will provide the infrastructure for the project, an approach which might involve significant duplication of effort. The research described in this thesis sets out to discover if there are common features in the practice of artists from a range of performance backgrounds and, if so, whether the features of a system which might support these common aspects could be established. Based on evidence from a set of interviews, it is shown that there are indeed common factors in work in this field, especially the intensive linking of elements in performances and the use of triggering or cuing. A statement of requirements for a generic system to support work in digital performance is then established based on interview analysis and personal creative work. A general model of live performance, based on set theory, is described which provides a rationale for the integration of digital technology within live performance. A computational model outlining the formal requirements of a general system for use in live performance is then presented. The thesis then describes the creation of a domain specific language specifically for controlling live performance and the development of a prototype reference implementation of a generic system, the Live Interactive Multimedia Performance Toolkit (LIMPT). The system is then evaluated from a number of standpoints including a set of criteria established earlier in the study. It is concluded that, while there are many resources currently used by artists working in digital performance (a comprehensive survey of current resources is presented), none offer the combination of functionality, usability and scalability offered by the prototype LIMPT system. The thesis concludes with a discussion of possible future work and the potential for increased creative activity in multimedia and live performance.

19th IEEE International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE 2016), is the event, in a series of highly successful International Conferences on Computational Science and Engineering, held mainly as the International Workshop on High Performance Scientific and Engineering Computing for 11 editions. August 24-26, 2016 - Paris, France
Currently multimedia contents dominate the information exchanged in Internet, particularly through social networks. Each actor on the Internet becomes producer and consumer of contents. Nevertheless, social network and other traditional collaborative environments present limitations regarding content selection, categorization, aggregation, linking and interoperability, and usage control and privacy. In [1], we proposed the architecture (based on a peer-to-peer infrastructure and Semantic Web) of a MultiMedia Digital EcoSystem (MMDES), as a new environment for collaboration and sharing of multimedia resources, multimedia processings, as well as for computing and storage capabilities. In this paper, we describe MMDES framework and functionalities related to managing the collective knowledge and equilibrium in MMDES. We also describe the implementation of MMDES using a mobile platform in order to provide resources’ sharing for the Archivo Nacional de Arte Rupestre (ANAR) in Venezuela

Resumen
Multimedia in E-Learnign and Cognitive Overload
Multimedia has infused itself into all aspects of education be it online, distance or in the face-to-face classroom. Its presence has become ubiquitous in education and yet has it really benefitted students to the degree it could? This paper utilizes a review of the literature to define the role of multimedia in e-learning then looks at how multimedia fits into basic pedagogy, learning theory and learning styles. An examination of how multimedia optimally could be incorporated into the curriculum is also conducted. Finally a look at cognitive overload is undertaken to determine if there is such as thing as too much of a good thing; can instructors end up confusing students with poorly designed multimedia presentations? There are many tools to use to present multimedia lessons however, this does not mean they all need to be used in a single lesson, and selecting the right multimedia tool, and content is imperative to ensure learning goals are met. Careful selection and attention to instructional design remains the key determinant in successful learning models and the incorporation of multimedia should be used with basic instructional pedagogy in mind.
