Resumen
Multi-modal transportation recommendation has a goal of recommending a travel plan which considers various transportation modes, such as walking, cycling, automobile, and public transit, and how to connect among these modes. The successful development of multi-modal transportation recommendation systems can help to satisfy the diversified needs of travelers and improve the efficiency of transport networks. However, existing transport recommender systems mainly focus on unimodal transport planning. To this end, in this paper, we propose a joint representation learning framework for multi-modal transportation recommendation based on a carefully-constructed multi-modal transportation graph. Specifically, we first extract a multi-modal transportation graph from large-scale map query data to describe the concurrency of users, Origin-Destination (OD) pairs, and transport modes. Then, we provide effective solutions for the optimization problem and develop an anchor embedding for transport modes to initialize the embeddings of transport modes. Moreover, we infer user relevance and OD pair relevance, and incorporate them to regularize the representation learning. Finally, we exploit the learned representations for online multimodal transportation recommendations. Indeed, our method has been deployed into one of the largest navigation Apps to serve hundreds of millions of users, and extensive experimental results with real-world map query data demonstrate the enhanced performance of the proposed method for multimodal transportation recommendations.

Resumen
Transport agencies require accurate and updated information about public transport systems for the optimal decision-making processes regarding design and operation. In addition to assessing topology and service components, users’ behaviors must be considered. To this end, a data-driven performance evaluation based on passengers’ actual routes is key. Automatic fare collection platforms provide meaningful smart card data (SCD), but these are incomplete when gathered by entry-only systems. To obtain origin–destination (OD) matrices, we must manage complete journeys. In this paper, we use an adapted trip chaining method to reconstruct incomplete multi-modal journeys by finding spatial similarities between the outbound and inbound routes of the same user. From this dataset, we develop a performance evaluation framework that provides novel metrics and visualization utilities. First, we generate a space-time characterization of the overall operation of transport networks. Second, we supply enhanced OD matrices showing mobility patterns between zones and average traversed distances, travel times, and operation speeds, which model the real efficacy of the public transport system. We applied this framework to the Comunidad de Madrid (Spain), using 4 months’ worth of real SCD, showing its potential to generate meaningful information about the performance of multi-modal public transport systems.

Resumen
The development of the concept of the quantum engine, that uses the energy of physical vacuum, makes it possible to create a new class of vehicles, namely, the quantomobile, designed as a quantum - powered vehicle. The type of quantum vehicles can be versatile, starting from the simplest version (with the ground vehicle driving modes) to the multi-environment multi-modal quantomobile that can function on land, in the air and in water. To work out a hypothetical model of the multi-environment multi-modal quantomobile, it is necessary to use all the heritage of research and development in the sphere of transport engineering. For 10 variants of the multi-environment multi-modal quantomobile movement - from the air quantum helicopter (quantocraft) to a quantum submarine (quantomarine) - there has been made an analysis of the numerical modeling specifics, the use of coordinate systems, the implementation of the traffic of existing transport vehicles that can be reflected in the concept of multi-environment quantomobile. Two extreme methods of modeling are distinguished: 1) the one based on a single family of coordinate systems and a common (end-to-end for all types of environment) motion model; 2) the one based on models by type of motion with possible switching of coordinate systems.

Resumen

Different security issues are a top subject around the world, especially since the terror threats seem to intensify. In the same time, the transport industry suffer from problems with smuggling and theft of valuable goods. One way to increase the security might be to have a verification system installed in commercial trucks, in order to assure that the driver is the proper one.

This thesis has two purposes. One is to find appropriate methods for driver verification and build a prototype of a verification system which can be used for testing and further development. The other is to study how truck drivers perceive such a system and how their conception goes along with the growing demand for higher security. The present work is the result of a cooperation between an engineer and a cognitive scientist. The thesis focuses on the transport industry and was performed for Volvo Technology Corporation (VTEC), Gothenburg, Sweden.

Eleven available verification methods were studied. To enable a well-based selection of methods to implement in the prototype, inquiries and interviews with truck drivers and haulage contractors were carried out to complement the theoretical study.

One regular and three biometric verification methods were chosen for the test; fingerprint verification, face recognition, voice recognition and PIN verification. These methods were put together to a prototype system that was implemented in a truck simulator. A graphical user interface was developed in order to make the system user friendly. The prototype system was tested by 18 truck drivers. They were thoroughly interviewed before and after the test in order to retrieve their background, expectations and opinions as well as their perceptions and experiences of the test.

Most of the test participants were positive to the prototype system. Even though they did not feel a need for it today they believed it to “be the future”. However, some participants felt uncomfortable with the system since they felt controlled by it. It became clear how important it is to have a system that respect the users’ privacy and to assure that the users are well informed about how the system is used. Some of the technology used for the verification system requires more development to fit in the automotive context, but it is considered to be possible to achieve a secure and robust system.

While they lack mammal-specific organs, zebrafish provide a high degree of resemblance in their genetic profile, molecular mechanisms and organ physiology to humans and have been established as an excellent complementary platform to rodents. However, their use in gastroenterology and hepatology is under-utilised, conceivably due to a lack of digestive system ultrastructural details as most anatomical studies were performed by light and fluorescence imaging. This thesis provides detailed insights into the structure and function of the zebrafish digestive system, particularly the liver. Multimodal bio-imaging approaches were developed in order to investigate the hepatic ultrastructure and function. Using a protocol that renders samples compatible with multiple imaging platforms, we produce a detailed map of the zebrafish gastrodigestive system from organ to subcellular levels. Findings were compared with the rodent/human counterparts and while some differences exist between the zebrafish and the rodent/human hepatic parenchymal cells and biliary system organisations, many similarities, at the sub/cellular levels, were also demonstrated. Using advances in genetics and a protocol that retains endogenous fluorescence within zebrafish at the same time as ultrastructure for electron microscopy, we further investigated key hepatic functional properties (e.g. macromolecular transport routes) by performing albumin injections and studying the liver macrophages. While we demonstrated similarities in the albumin uptake pathway and in the morphology of liver macrophages in zebrafish, we reveal that zebrafish liver macrophages lack of phagocytic function (a key aspect in rodents and human), which may limit their use in hepatic-immune diseases studies. Altogether, our studies provide new insights and novel protocols for the analysis of the zebrafish liver and lay a foundation to further evaluate uptake routes for gastro-digestive research and drug delivery in various diseases.

Au cours du siècle dernier, les voitures privées ont dominé l'industrie du transport, exerçant une influence profonde sur l'activité économique. Ce paradigme centré sur la voiture a entraîné des coûts substantiels, en raison de l'augmentation de la congestion routière et des émissions de carbone. En réponse, les villes ont de plus en plus adopté des plateformes de mobilité numérique pour améliorer l'efficacité des transports et la qualité de vie. S'appuyant sur les principes de l'économie de partage, les plateformes de mobilité numérique offrent un accès à court terme à divers moyens de transport. Ce modèle est attrayant car il favorise une utilisation plus efficace du capital et offre des alternatives plus propres à l'utilisation individuelle de la voiture. Pour répondre efficacement aux enjeux liées au transport, elles doivent réduire la dépendance à l'égard de la voiture, résoudre les dilemmes des voyageurs et favoriser les complémentarités avec les transports en commun. Toutefois, l'absence de preuves empiriques solides nous empêche de comprendre si les plateformes de mobilité numérique adhèrent à ces principes. Par conséquent, la question de savoir comment intégrer efficacement les plateformes de mobilité numérique dans les systèmes de transport existants reste un sujet d'étude actuel et pertinent. Cette thèse contribue à ce débat par le biais de quatre articles. Le chapitre 2 s'appuie sur la théorie de l'économie des plateformes pour développer une typologie de modèle d'entreprise pour les plateformes de mobilité numérique et identifier la nature de l'intervention publique. Le chapitre 3 explore la dynamique du marché entre les transports publics et le vélopartage, révélant des complémentarités après de longues périodes de perturbation du réseau. Le chapitre 4 évalue les règles de stationnement pour les e-scooters. Les résultats suggèrent un effet positif sur le stationnement abusif, mais un effet négatif inattendu sur l'accessibilité. Le chapitre 5 étudie le potentiel de réduction des émissions de carbone du covoiturage et explore les politiques visant à améliorer la réduction des émissions de carbone. Dans l'ensemble, cette thèse fournit des indications aux décideurs et aux praticiens pour concevoir des systèmes de transport multimodaux plus efficaces et plus durables. Over the past century, private cars have dominated the transport industry, profoundly shaping economic activity. However, this car-centric approach has also come with substantial costs, due to increasing traffic congestion and carbon emissions. In response, cities have increasingly adopted digital mobility platforms to improve transportation efficiency and enhance quality of life. Leveraging the principles of the sharing economy, digital mobility platforms provide short-term access to various means of transport. This model is appealing because it promotes more efficient use of capital and offers cleaner alternatives to individual car usage. To effectively address transport-related concerns, they must reduce car dependency, address travelers' dilemmas, and fostering complementarities with mass transit. However, the lack of robust empirical evidence limits our understanding of whether digital mobility platforms adhere to these principles. Therefore, the question of how to effectively integrate digital mobility platforms into existing transport systems remains an ongoing subject of scrutiny. This thesis contribute to this debate in four papers. Chapter 2 builds on the theory of platform economics to develop a business model typology for digital mobility platforms and identify the nature for public intervention. Chapter 3 explores the market dynamics between public transport and bike sharing, revealing complementarities after long periods of disruption in the network. Chapter 4 evaluates parking regulations for e-scooters. The findings suggest a positive effect on improper parking, but an unexpected negative effect on accessibility. Chapter 5 investigates car pooling's potential for carbon emission reduction, and explore policies to improve carbon mitigation. Overall, this thesis provides insights for decision makers and practitioners to design more efficient and sustainable multi-modal transport systems. Crafting regulations that guide technology toward economic and environmental objectives is paramount for the future

Aujourd'hui c'est un fait, nous vivons dans un monde où les enjeux écologiques, économiques et sociétaux sont de plus en plus pressants. Au croisement des différentes lignes directrices envisagées pour répondre à ces problèmes, une vision plus précise de la mobilité humaine est un axe central et majeur, qui a des répercussions sur tous les domaines associés tels que le transport, les sciences sociales, l'urbanisme, les politiques d'aménagement, l'écologie, etc. C'est par ailleurs dans un contexte de contraintes budgétaires fortes que les principaux acteurs de la mobilité sur les territoires cherchent à rationaliser les services de transport, et les déplacements des individus. La mobilité humaine est donc un enjeu stratégique aussi bien pour les collectivités locales que pour les usagers, qu'il faut savoir observer, comprendre, et anticiper.Cette étude de la mobilité passe avant tout par une observation précise des déplacements des usagers sur les territoires. Aujourd'hui les acteurs de la mobilité se tournent principalement vers l'utilisation massive des données utilisateurs. L'utilisation simultanée de données multi-sources, multi-modales, et multi-échelles permet d'entrevoir de nombreuses possibilités, mais cette dernière présente des défis technologiques et scientifiques majeurs. Les modèles de mobilité présentés dans la littérature sont ainsi trop souvent axés sur des zones d'expérimentation limitées, en utilisant des données calibrées, etc. et leur application dans des contextes réels, et à plus large échelle est donc discutable. Nous identifions ainsi deux problématiques majeures qui permettent de répondre à ce besoin d'une meilleure connaissance de la mobilité humaine, mais également à une meilleure application de cette connaissance. La première problématique concerne l'extraction d'informations de mobilité à partir de la fusion de données hétérogènes. La seconde problématique concerne la pertinence de cette fusion dans un contexte réel, et à plus large échelle. Nous apportons différents éléments de réponses à ces problématiques dans cette thèse. Tout d'abord en présentant deux modèles de fusion de données, qui permettent une extraction d'informations pertinentes. Puis, en analysant l'application de ces deux modèles au sein du projet ANR Norm-Atis.Dans cette thèse, nous suivons finalement le développement de toute une chaine de processus. En commençant par une étude de la mobilité humaine, puis des modèles de mobilité, nous présentons deux modèles de fusion de données, et nous analysons leur pertinence dans un cas concret. Le premier modèle que nous proposons permet d'extraire 12 comportements types de mobilité. Il est basé sur un apprentissage non-supervisé de données issues de la téléphonie mobile. Nous validons nos résultats en utilisant des données officielles de l'INSEE, et nous déduisons de nos résultats, des comportements dynamiques qui ne peuvent pas être observés par les données de mobilité traditionnelles. Ce qui est une forte valeur-ajoutée de notre modèle. Le second modèle que nous proposons permet une désagrégation des flux de mobilité en six motifs de mobilité. Il se base sur un apprentissage supervisé des données issues d'enquêtes de déplacements ainsi que des données statiques de description du sursol. Ce modèle est appliqué par la suite aux données agrégés au sein du projet Norm-Atis. Les temps de calculs sont suffisamment performants pour permettre une application de ce modèle dans un contexte temps-réel
Today it is a fact that we live in a world where ecological, economic and societal issues are increasingly pressing. At the crossroads of the various guidelines envisaged to address these problems, a more accurate vision of human mobility is a central and major axis, which has repercussions on all related fields such as transport, social sciences, urban planning, management policies, ecology, etc. It is also in the context of strong budgetary constraints that the main actors of mobility on the territories seek to rationalize the transport services and the movements of individuals. Human mobility is therefore a strategic challenge both for local communities and for users, which must be observed, understood and anticipated.This study of mobility is based above all on a precise observation of the movements of users on the territories. Nowadays mobility operators are mainly focusing on the massive use of user data. The simultaneous use of multi-source, multi-modal, and multi-scale data opens many possibilities, but the latter presents major technological and scientific challenges. The mobility models presented in the literature are too often focused on limited experimental areas, using calibrated data, etc., and their application in real contexts and on a larger scale is therefore questionable. We thus identify two major issues that enable us to meet this need for a better knowledge of human mobility, but also to a better application of this knowledge. The first issue concerns the extraction of mobility information from heterogeneous data fusion. The second problem concerns the relevance of this fusion in a real context, and on a larger scale. These issues are addressed in this dissertation: the first, through two data fusion models that allow the extraction of mobility information, the second through the application of these fusion models within the ANR Norm-Atis project.In this thesis, we finally follow the development of a whole chain of processes. Starting with a study of human mobility, and then mobility models, we present two data fusion models, and we analyze their relevance in a concrete case. The first model we propose allows to extract 12 types of mobility behaviors. It is based on an unsupervised learning of mobile phone data. We validate our results using official data from the INSEE, and we infer from our results, dynamic behaviors that can not be observed through traditional mobility data. This is a strong added-value of our model. The second model operates a mobility flows decompositoin into six mobility purposes. It is based on a supervised learning of mobility surveys data and static data from the land use. This model is then applied to the aggregated data within the Norm-Atis project. The computing times are sufficiently powerful to allow an application of this model in a real-time context

La politique des transports dans le monde et en Europe évolue vers une vision co-modale. Cette nouvelle politique n'oppose plus la voiture au transport public mais encourage une combinaison de tous les modes de transport en espérant ainsi assurer un développement rentable et durable.Nous focalisons notre étude sur le service transport de personnes qui s'inscrit au cœur des politiques co-modales en combinant tous les modes de transport en commun (métro, bus..) et promeut de nouveaux modes d'utilisation de la voiture particulière comme le covoiturage (partage d'un véhicule personnel) ou l'AutoPartage (voiture en libre-service).Toutefois, pour générer un itinéraire exploitant les services de plusieurs opérateurs de transport, il faut consulter plusieurs sites internet. Selon le déplacement à réaliser, cette tâche de planification complexe peut être très difficile à réaliser et ne garantit pas l'optimalité de l'itinéraire sélectionné.Nous nous sommes donc intéressés à la conception d'un système d'aide au déplacement capable de fournir une information voyageur (co-modale) en mettant en relation plusieurs opérateurs de transport (en commun et individuel). Le système en question doit être capable d'assister l'utilisateur dans la phase de planification par la constitution d'un carnet de voyage proposant plusieurs itinéraires multi-opérateurs. De plus, il assiste l'utilisateur en cas de perturbation en l'informant et en lui proposant des itinéraires de secours. Ce travail est basé sur des avancées technologiques qui facilitent l'optimisation dans un environnement distribué (Multi-agent - SOA) et rendent l'information accessible grâce à un grand nombre de médias (téléphone, PDA..)

De nos jours, l’intérêt porté à la préservation de l’environnement à travers la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre prend de plus en plus d’ampleur. Depuis 2006,la politique multimodale a évolué vers une politique co-modale qui n’oppose plus la voiture au transport public mais encourage une combinaison de tous les modes de transport sans favorisation dans le but d’une optimisation du service. Placés dans ce cadre, le but de cette thèse est de mettre en œuvre un système de gestion de véhicules partagés qui recouvre tous les services de transports existants tel que le transport public, le covoiturage, les véhicules en libre service et qui capable de satisfaire les demandes des utilisateurs en leur fournissant des itinéraires co-modaux optimisés en terme de temps, coût et émission des gaz à effet de serre tout en respectant leurs préférences et priorités. En recevant plusieurs requêtes simultanées en un court laps de temps, le système doit être capable à la fois de décomposer les solutions en tronçons que nous appelons Routes, en respectant toutes les similarités entre les différentes demandes et de regrouper les informations de manière cohérente pour déterminer les combinaisons de Routes possibles. Vu l’aspect dynamique et distribué du problème, une stratégie de résolution efficace mettant à profit une mixture de concepts ; à savoir les systèmes multi-agents et l’optimisation a été mise en place. Les résultats expérimentaux présentés dans cette thèse justifient l’importance de la co-modalité et la nécessité de mettre à profit la complémentarité entre les véhicules partagés et les autres moyens de transport à travers un système intelligent et global
Nowadays, the protection of the environment through the reduction of greenhouse gases is becoming more and more important. In order to resolve environmental problems, a multimodal policy is firstly adopted in order to encourage the use of public transport. Since 2006, a new notion: the co-modality is introduced and it consists on developing infrastructures and taking measures and actions that will ensure optimum combination of individual and public transport modes. In this context, the purpose of this thesis is to implement co-modal transport system that covers all the existing transport services such as the public transport, the carpooling or the free use vehicles (bikes, cars). In order to satisfy the user’s requests, the system offers optimized co-modal itineraries in terms of three criteria: total time, total cost and greenhouse gases emission taking into account their preferences and constraints. In a short time interval, many transport users can formulate simultaneously a set of requests. So the system should find feasible decompositions in terms of independent sub-itineraries called Routes recognizing similarities and recognize the different possibilities of Routes Combinations to compose each itinerary demand. Considering the dynamic and distributed aspect of the problem, an effective strategy combining different concepts like multi-agent system and optimization methods is applied. The experimental results presented in this thesis justify the importance of co-modality and the necessity of taking advantage of the complementarity between the shared vehicles and other means of transportation through an intelligent and global system

Les systèmes de transport public urbain influencent l'infrastructure des agglomérations et la vie de leurs habitants tout en stimulant directement l'économie. Les systèmes de transport public urbain intelligents contribuent à améliorer la qualité de vie et l'environnement dans les villes. Le développement rapide des solutions de transport urbain a conduit de très nombreux opérateurs à se porter sur ce marché empêchant ainsi une logique globale de l’offre. Ces optimisations discrètes, privées de toutes concertations entre opérateurs de transport intervenant sur un même périmètre, interdit l’identification d’un optimum global. En conséquence, le fonctionnement inefficace des systèmes de transport public urbain ne réduit pas nécessairement la charge environnementale, et les opérateurs de transport urbain peuvent ne pas être en mesure de la gérer de manière durable. Pour répondre à ces défis, cette thèse propose une méthodologie associée à des modèles mathématiques qui sont développés à travers des approches d’optimisation pour une gestion systémique des réseaux de transport public multimodal, et ce afin d’assurer le meilleur taux de service aux usagers tout en minimisant les coûts et les externalités sociétales afin de satisfaire au principe de durabilité, fréquemment exprimé dans les plans de développement urbains
Urban public transport systems influence the infrastructure of urban areas and the lives of their inhabitants while directly stimulating the economy. Intelligent urban public transport systems help to improve the quality of life and the environment in cities. The rapid development of urban transport solutions has led to a large number of operators entering the market, thus preventing a global optimum. These discrete optimisations, without any articulation between transport operators, avoid the identification of a global optimum. As a result, the inefficient operation of urban public transport systems does not necessarily reduce the environmental cost. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes a methodology associated with mathematical models developing optimisation approaches for multimodal public transport networks, for achieving the best service policy while minimising operation costs in order to satisfy the principle of sustainability, frequently expressed in urban development goals

AbstractThe development and implementation of the River Information Services (RIS) concept started in the end 1990s with various research projects followed by national or regional implementation projects in the first decade of this century. The resulting national RIS systems haven’t been able to exploit the full potential of RIS when it comes to cross-border data exchange and interoperability. To overcome these gaps the concept of RIS Corridor Management was established aiming at linking the fragmented services together on a corridor to supply RIS along the complete route or network. The concept of RIS Corridor Management was taken up by the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility Programme) co-funded multi-beneficiary project RIS COMEX (www.riscomex.eu) with the goal to implement harmonized RIS services on European level. Within the RIS COMEX project the consortium of 13 countries realized a common and centralized single access point to Inland Waterway Information, the European River Information Services (EuRIS) System. EuRIS acts as European RIS platform fulfilling a great variety of information needs of inland waterway stakeholders like skippers, vessel and infrastructure operators, logistics and authorities. The system gathers relevant RIS information from the national systems in order to provide optimized fairway-, infrastructure- and traffic-related services in a single point of access for the users enabling reliable route- and voyage planning and sharing as well as traffic- and transport management on pan-European level. EuRIS provides access to its services via a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) or machine-readable Open Application Programming Interfaces (API).In order to guarantee sustainable operation of EuRIS a legal, organizational and financial framework has been setup by the partners. The core aspects concern the joint governance of the system operation as well as the legal basis for RIS data exchange and usage. The full operation and further development of EuRIS is a major milestone in the sector enhancing attractiveness and competitiveness of Inland Waterway Transport in Europe and setting the basis for connectivity to other transport modes and synchro modal logistic operations.

Nowadays, mobile smartphone applications are becoming increasingly used and help users solve many problems of daily life, including multi-modal transport. One major cause of the fast adoption is the emergence of social networks that have a significant impact on the social life of users. In addition to the work schedule, the traffic conditions in large cities make citizens spend a lot of time on the road, having increasingly less time available for socializing with family or friends. This paper presents a solution that trains drivers, bicycle riders, pedestrians and other road users to combat traffic problems, finding out where their friends are and how to get to a specific location faster. The proposed solution demonstrates the success of implementing an accelerated validated learning process version, focused on its context and industry. The proposed validated learning process will allow the MobiWay (Mobility Beyond Individualism: an Integrated Platform for Intelligent Transportation Systems of Tomorrow) platform to be brought to the market faster and in a more successful manner. The main contribution of this paper consists of the integration of an Android application in the MobiWay platform that will focus on the social life of road users relying on their contacts from mobile devices and social networks. The users will be able to choose a combination of the three types of multi-modal transport (driving, cycling or walking) and the mobile smartphone application will provide an optimized route to their destination in concordance with the preferred options and traffic patterns learned by the platform.

Abstract A novel system has been developed to provide the transport, storage and delivery of wet (3-10% moisture by weight) sand for hydraulic fracturing operations. Pumping service efficiency and frac sand throughput remain the two key factors used to measure both a frac service provider's performance and an operator's need to maximize returns. Recent technology advancements in wet sand handling capability have been introduced to the market, which facilitates these operational goals while adding additional benefits such as improved ESG scorecard performance along with reduced cost. This is the second-generation of wet sand technology, designed from the ground up with all new equipment and methodology. It is designed to enable varied storage options and incorporates improved flow capacity and sand metering capability. It has been extensively tested at sand mines and trialed on fracturing operations in multiple basins since early 2021. This system has proven to be a simple and reliable system for the handling and transfer of wet sand under a wide range of conditions and sand throughput demand. Importantly, this new equipment package permits multi-modal sand delivery and is a significant step forward in addressing the multiple aspects and challenges of wet sand delivery. Delivering wet sand to a Frac Service Provider (FSP) blender presents challenges at every step. The first-generation wet sand systems in operation since 2019 evolved from containerized dry sand wellsite equipment and have proven very effective. However, after several years of operation, additional improvements have been envisioned that further facilitate the storage, movement and metering of wet sand. This paper explores the needs, methods, and benefits of this radically different second generation of wet sand handling equipment that will enable better, more reliable wet sand storage and mobility from mine to wellhead. The benefits of utilizing wet sand have been well documented. These include significant cost and emissions savings, the ability for high throughput operations and simplification of the supply chain. Data will be presented illustrating on site performance, throughput and various delivery options along with quantified savings regarding cost and emissions. This novel system continues to expand new sand mine sourcing opportunities and improves storage capability. It also reduces equipment complexity, non-productive time risk (NPT) and onsite headcount, while improving ESG and HSE metrics throughout the supply chain.

Regional aviation is an innovation driven sector of paramount importance for the European Union economy. Large resources and efforts are currently spent through the CleanSky program for the development of an efficient air transport system characterized by a lower environmental impact and unequalled capabilities of ensuring safe and seamless mobility while complying with very demanding technological requirements. The Green Regional Aircraft (GRA) panel, active from 2006, aims to mature, validate and demonstrate green aeronautical technologies best fitting the regional aircraft that will fly from 2020 onwards with reference to specific and challenging domains: from advanced low-weight and high performance structures up to all-electric systems and bleed-less engine architectures, from low noise/high efficiency aerodynamic up to environmentally optimized missions and trajectories management. The development of such technologies addresses two different aircraft concepts, identified by two seat classes, 90-pax with Turboprop (TP) engine and 130-pax, in combination with advanced propulsion solutions, namely, the Geared Turbofan (GTF), the Advanced Turbofan (ATF) and the Open Rotor (OR) configuration. Within the framework of the Clean Sky program, and along nearly 10 years of research, the design and technological demonstration of a novel wing flap architecture was addressed. Research activities aimed at demonstrating the industrial feasibility of a morphing architecture enabling flap camber variation in compliance with the demanding safety requirements applicable to the next generation GRA in both open rotor and turboprop configurations. The driving motivation was found in the opportunity to replace a conventional double slotted flap with a single slotted morphing flap assuring improved high lift performances — in terms of maximum attainable lift coefficient and stall angle — while lowering emitted noise, fuel-burnt and deployment system complexity. Additional functionalities for load control and alleviation were then considered and enabled by a smart architecture allowing for an independent shape-control of the flap tip region during cruise. The entire process moving from concept definition up to the experimental qualification of true scale prototypes, characterized by global and multi-zone differential morphing capabilities, is here described with specific emphasis on the adopted design philosophy and implemented technological solutions. Paths to improvements are finally outlined in perspective of a low-term item certification and series production.

Rail based Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) be it elevated or underground was the first choice of the Indian Cities, which is changing now with more and more interest coming from 2nd and 3rd Tier Cities, Light Rail Transit System (LRTS) and trolley bus is gaining momentum and this become preferred choice in tier 1 cities as well to provide last mile connectivity, in sync with multi-modal integration to for door-to-door service. In order to control cost, it is now more and more explored to adopt to At Grade Section in such light transit systems. But at junction of such at grade section with Elevated / Underground stretch, it becomes inevitable to provide transition section. This paper aims in elaborating approach to design such transition zone for trackwork.</p>

An ENUN 32P cask supplied by Equipos Nucleares S.A. (ENSA) was transported 9,600 miles by road, sea, and rail in 2017 in order to collect shock and vibration data on the cask system and surrogate spent fuel assemblies within the cask. The task of examining 101,857 ASCII data files — 6.002 terabytes of data (this includes binary and ASCII files) — has begun. Some results of preliminary analyses are presented in this paper. A total of seventy-seven accelerometers and strain gauges were attached by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) to three surrogate spent fuel assemblies, the cask basket, the cask body, the transport cradle, and the transport platforms. The assemblies were provided by SNL, Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos, S.A. (ENRESA), and a collaboration of Korean institutions. The cask system was first subjected to cask handling operations at the ENSA facility. The cask was then transported by heavy-haul truck in northern Spain and shipped from Spain to Belgium and subsequently to Baltimore on two roll-on/roll-off ships. From Baltimore, the cask was transported by rail using a 12-axle railcar to the American Association of Railroads’ Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI) near Pueblo, Colorado where a series of special rail tests were performed. Data were continuously collected during this entire sequence of multi-modal transportation events. (We did not collect data on the transfer between modes of transportation.) Of particular interest — indeed the original motivation for these tests — are the strains measured on the zirconium-alloy tubes in the assemblies. The strains for each of the transport modes are compared to the yield strength of irradiated Zircaloy to illustrate the margin against rod failure during normal conditions of transport. The accelerometer data provides essential comparisons of the accelerations on the different components of the cask system exhibiting both amplification and attenuation of the accelerations at the transport platforms through the cradle and cask and up to the interior of the cask. These data are essential for modeling cask systems. This paper concentrates on analyses of the testing of the cask on a 12-axle railcar at TTCI.
