Twaddell, Karen G. "The reported shared experiences of six single mothers raising sons". Scholarly Commons, 2008. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2374.

Resumen
The purpose of this research was to explore the life of single-mothers raising boys. The focus of this research was to provide information of life experiences for women who raised sons by themselves. The study also showed effects of divorce on single-mothers, pointed out experiences specific to raising boys, and looked at the issue of support. The study involved interviewing divorced single-mothers with standard, open-ended questions about raising boys. The questions discussed such issues as their relationships with their sons, and what types of support, if any, they had while they raised their sons. Participants included single-mothers who had not remarried, who were college graduates and whose language of communication was English. The interviews were then recorded and transcribed. The findings indicate that support to the mother does matter. The majority of the mothers interviewed had support for themselves and for their child. In most of the cases where support was offered, the primary figure was another female. In two-thirds of the cases, the other adult support figure was the grandmother. In one other case, it was the mother's daughter. Much of the literature states that outcomes on the lives of boys raised by single divorced mothers should be heavily impacted by problems in their lives (Amato & Keith, 1991). The 6 boys of the mothers interviewed here were not. While 4 of the mothers also had girls, certain issues were specific to raising boys. While 3 of the boys were young, 3 were over the age of 18 and their lives had not followed the prevailing research. This study indicated that for this particular group of single-mothers, support from others, determination and hard work on the part of the mothers, have made a difference in the lives of their sons. By providing support to the mother, support was made available to the son.

Henderson, Michael-Kamau. "Decoding Metacommunication Patterns From African American Single Mothers to Sons". ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2262.

Texto completo
Resumen
With a significant number of African American single-parent families responsible for raising a generation of male children, the focus of this qualitative case study was on exploring the African American single mother-son dyad to identify metacommunicative signals delivered from mothers to sons. This study was grounded in a theoretical framework combining attachment theory and social learning theory. The research questions focused on identifying metacommunication messages passed from mothers to sons and how metacommunication patterns influence the youth's social identity. Four single mothers with adolescent sons and 4 unrelated adult sons of single mothers participated in semistructured interviews. Data were collected and analyzed using content analysis and coding supported with NVivo software. Key findings revealed that the metacommunication was a dominant form of communication in the African-American family construct, and affected the parenting styles. From the mother's retrospective reports, African-American mother's adapted an authoritarian or helicopter parenting styles to control and protect their sons from racism, becoming victims of crime and violence, being arrested, or incarcerated. The key finding from the sons' retrospective reports was that negative metacommunication from single mothers to sons was associated with insecure attachment, avoidance, and risky behaviors. The implications for social change are that positive metacommunication can strengthen the African American single mother-son dyad. This information may lead to intervention strategies for targeting negative metacommunication patterns from African American single mothers to sons and teaching new communication rules that foster a secure relationship.

Resumen
Thesis advisor: Andrew Sofer
In this thesis, it is my task to explore Shakespeare’s social analysis concerning the patriarchal structure of the family and the economic implications of this system. Four plays in particular, King Lear, Henry IV, As You Like It, and The Tempest resonate with these thematic elements. At the heart of these plays is the issue I call the paternal dilemma; the father or patriarch is a mere human, cannot live forever, and therefore needs to rely on an inheritance scheme to ensure the continuation of his line. This problem sees the institution of inheritance (namely, primogeniture) as a solution or antidote to mortality. In an investigation of these issues, I place myself in an already rich field of secondary criticism, examining how genre and family structure combine in what is ultimately a conservative understanding of the Elizabethan family

Lyon, Elizabeth Lain. "Mothers, Sons, and the Gothic Family in Brown, Poe, and Wharton". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/67.

Texto completo
Resumen
Within Gothic literature, the mother is frequently missing. In Charles Brockden Brown’s Edgar Huntly, Edgar Allan Poe’s “Morella,” “Ligeia,” and “Eleonora,” and Edith Wharton’s “Bewitched,” men are left without parents, and they attempt to recuperate a mother-figure. To do so, the men in these texts psychologically project the role of their mother onto other women. Wives, sisters, and daughters all have the potential to become mothers to these men. This is a catastrophe for the women involved, for male perception fails to distinguish females as autonomous, unique beings. By conflating roles in the family structure, men destroy women and thus are left without the nurturing mother-figure – or indeed any female – they desperately need.

Howard, Scott. "The correlation of defensive responses between mothers and sons: An attachment perspective". Scholarly Commons, 2004. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2429.

Texto completo
Resumen
A child's internalized regulatory system and development of defenses is patterned after the parent-child attachment system. Therefore, measuring defenses can provide information about the quality of the internalized attachment relationship. This study examined the correlation of defenses in mother-son pairs. It examined defensive behaviors utilizing the Rorschach Test, as responses to the Rorschach are useful in describing a person's basic defensive functions. The study found that the defenses of regression, repression, avoidance, a personal defense stance and the quality of inner resources were positively correlated between mothers and sons. These correlations were .74, .53, .50, .48, and .44 respectively. This data indicates that, for this sample, a mother and son's defensive behaviors were correlated across several variables. These results suggest the Rorschach may be a useful instrument in studying the sequelae of the attachment relationship. This method may also offer the family therapist insights into what defenses are currently activated in the parent-child relationship.

Resumen
In 2008 Fox first aired its hit show Sons of Anarchy, a drama series about a Californian motorcycle club. The main thrust is about the club’s vice-president and his struggle to find his place in a life of violence. According to creator Kurt Sutter the series is partly based on Shakespeare’s 16th century drama Hamlet - Prince of Denmark, which causes the show to often be referred to as ”Hamlet on Harleys”. Focusing on the first two seasons of the series, this essay looks into the relationship between the two works of art. Asking how the inspiration of the play is reflected in the television series, it compares the stories’ main themes and motives with help of the actantial model, as well as the different characters and their relationships with each other. A major motive in both pieces being vengeance and violence, the last chapter of the analysis looks into those themes and their importance for the main character. The series uses Shakespeare´s play as an inspiration and an underlying superstructure, there are remarkable similarities in these seemingly completely different stories. The characters are the main driving force of both tales, and the greatest link between the works consists in them trying to expose the workings of the human mind and their study of human behavior and relationships.

Doherty, Rianne. "The experience of mothers of engaging in a parenting intervention for their sons' conduct disorder: qualitative study". Thesis, University of London, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.589466.

Texto completo
Resumen
Conduct Disorder is the most common reason for referral to child and adolescent mental health services (Audit Commission, 1999) and without treatment the long term prognosis for the child is poor (Kim-Cohen et al., 2003). The National Institute for Clinical Excellence Guidelines (NICE, 2006) recommend parenting interventions for the treatment of conduct disorder; however parental engagement in these interventions is low, particularly for families with multiple psycho-social stressors (Kazdin, Muzurick & Bass, 1993). Research has explored the variables which predict parental engagement in treatment and a positive therapeutic alliance has consistently been found to be associated with increased engagement in parenting interventions (Kazdin, Holland & Crowley, 1997). However little is known about the nature of the parent-therapist alliance and how it impacts on engagement. This is of particular interest given that parents are engaging in an intervention for their child's problem but the intervention is focussed on parenting practices. The aim of the study was to explore parent's experience of engaging in a parenting intervention and their experience of the therapeutic alliance with their clinician. Eight in-depth qualitative interviews were undertaken with parents of children with conduct disorder who were involved with an individual home based parenting intervention. The data was analysed in line with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009). Five master themes emerged from the data; Experience of help-seeking as threatening. Making sense of the problem. A different relationship to help. 3 ---.. •................................ --- --- --- - -- ---------- The meaning of the parent-clinician relationship. A new approach to parenting. The results are discussed in relation to the existing literature and clinical implications for promoting engagement and the therapeutic alliance with this population are considered. The impact of parents' previous experiences of help seeking, their attributions of the problem and the impact of a diagnosis are also discussed. Clinically the findings can be used to understand the facilitators and barriers to the delivery of parenting interventions for child conduct disorder. 4

Resumen
In this thesis I examine the representation of parents and schoolmasters and the conflicts between them in vernacular drama in Reformation England. This was a period of growth in public schooling and a time when numerous treatises on education and childrearing were in circulation in England. Prevailing pedagogical theory privileged the schoolmaster's authority over that of the parents, and set paternal authority over that of the mother. It sought to limit maternal power to the domestic sphere and the infant years, yet the drama examined here suggests that mothers, not fathers, were usually the parent in control of their children's education. The conflicts inherent in these oppositions are played out in drama dealing with schooling and childrearing; each of the works examined here participates in and contributes to public debate over school education and parenting practices in early modern England. The thesis conducts a close textual and contextual analysis of the representation of schoolmasters and parents and of parent-school relations in seven English plays. A variety of dramatic genres is represented: public drama (Love's Labour's Lost, Patient Grissill, The Winter's Tale), school drama (Nice Wanton, July and Julian, The Disobedient Child), and private royal entertainment (The Lady of May). The plays are explicated in terms of the Tudor school culture and the negotiation of authority between fathers, mothers and schoolmasters. The thesis draws extensively on sixteenth-century school dialogues and vulgaria and on education treatises, which were available in English in Tudor England, in particular the writings of Erasmus, Vives, Ascham, Mulcaster, Elyot, Brinsley and Becon. School records provide information on school conditions and curricula, the duties and qualities of schoolmasters and the role of schools in civic and public performances. The thesis addresses issues of gender, childrearing, public education and parental and pedagogical authority in the second half of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

Resumen
An increase in the prevalence of autism in recent years has meant that the needs of parents of children with autism are becoming an increasingly vital area of research. There is evidence that parents of children with autism experience higher levels of stress than parents of children with other developmental disorders and yet there is a dearth of research involving parents of children with autism, particularly research into their experiences. The aim of this open ended study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the experiences of parents of children with autism; specifically their experiences of support since their sons were diagnosed. The research was qualitative and idiographic, and the approach adopted was Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Semi-structured interviews were completed with five mothers from ethnic minorities with six and seven year old boys who had received a diagnosis of autism by the age of four and who attended a mainstream school. All mothers had more than one child. Analysis generated six superordinate themes which reflected the participants' process of understanding and coming to terms with autism; needing or wanting further support or information; their role and responsibility as mother; confidence in and reliance on others; communication; and comparison. Participants identified what they had found supportive and areas in which they felt in need of further support. The findings are explored in relation to existing research and psychological theories and implications are offered. In particular, findings indicated that the label of autism can be helpful to parents both in coming to terms with autism and in gaining support. Whilst trust in professionals was evident, all five mothers gained support from other parents of children with autism. Further research is needed to investigate whether these findings can be generalised. There is also reflection upon the applicability of using IPA with participants for who English is an additional language and the impact of their cultural identities on their experiences.

Resumen

The African American community’s relationship with the police has historically been strained for more than a century. How that tumultuous relationship affects African American mother’s perceptions of police and confidence in the ability for police to interact safely with their sons has not been explored thus far. It is the intention of this study to explore and offer insight into the experience of African American mothers with sons and potential police interactions. This qualitative study utilized a focus group setting to gather information. Within two weeks of the focus group 6 participants withdrew, the focus group ultimately included 6 participants. Participants voiced their need to educate their sons about police, Blackness being a risk factor, the emotional burdens of ensuring safety, strategies used to promote safety in potential police interactions, and possible solutions to strained community police relations. Participants developed strategies to increase safety by asking their sons to be compliant, stay under the radar, utilize family support, recreational and community resources. While there was a lack of confidence and mistrust of the police, participants maintained hope that with training and positive community interactions there can be improvement in safety during police interactions.

Pryde, Rebecca Louise. "A qualitative study of mothers' experiences of supporting the sexual development of their sons with autism and an accompanying learning disability". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/8368/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The sexuality and sexual development of individuals with autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) and an accompanying learning disability is a neglected area, despite the fact that this group have the same sexual desires as their typically developing peers. Due to the socially marginalised position these individuals are often placed in, parents play a key role in supporting them with their developing sexuality. It is therefore important to understand parents’ experiences and perspectives about their offspring’s socio-sexual needs. Five mothers of sons with ASD and a moderate to severe learning disability aged 16 to 24 were recruited from voluntary organisations and interviewed. Interviews were audio recorded then transcribed and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to draw out key themes from their narratives. These narratives were fraught with tensions; mothers’ acknowledged their sons’ sexuality as an important part of their developing identity, but their sons’ sexuality brought many challenges. They wanted to provide their sons with appropriate education, but were concerned that by doing so, they could increase problematic sexual behaviours, which could result in serious negative consequences. The mothers also expressed their concerns about who would love their sons when they grew up. There was an overarching sense that these mothers were desperate for support and information to help improve their confidence in supporting their sons’ socio-sexual needs. This study highlights the need for sensitive and person-centred support to both young people with ASD and an accompanying learning disability and their families in relation to their sexuality and sexual development. It also highlights that services need to consider how to meet this group’s need for physical intimacy and affection when their family members are no longer able to do so.

Resumen

The emotions of African-American mothers of sons are an understudied area in social work research. Given the disproportionate representation of Black male youth on social service caseloads, a more in-depth understanding of their mothers' experiences while raising them is very important. Using group storytelling formats, this qualitative study examines the emotional content of a small cohort of African-American mothers in New York City and Westchester County, New York, with sons ranging in age from infancy through 30.

Viewed through the theoretical frames of Africana womanism and nonfinite loss, the study finds that African-American mothers of sons are emotionally fatigued. They fear for their sons' safety in the presence of police. They worry about a variety of factors that affect their sons' well-being. The mothers feel guilty about choices they have made in life, particularly regarding husbands. They often feel abandoned, and long for stronger connections with other African-American mothers of sons. Throughout everything, they love their sons and are very proud of them.

Practice implications include reframing challenging emotional expressions and behaviors as indicators of emotional fatigue; forming alliances with African-American mothers of sons to address oppressive practices in law enforcement and schools; and co-creating culturally grounded support groups with African-American mothers of sons.

This is a creative work in the genre of non-fiction writing, in the sub-genre of memoir. When Again Comes Back to You is a memoir that traces the effects of abuse as it works upon the life of a young girl who grows in the shadow of an abusive family. As the girl grows, and becomes a mother herself, the story explores how the effects of abuse can extend into the next generation.

Resumen
Maternal HIV-infection is considered to be a threat to the psychosocial development of AIDS-affected children. In South Africa, AIDS-affected children may be particularly vulnerable due to the unprecedented effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the breakdown of family and community resources in already disadvantaged communities. The aim of this study was to explore the contextualised experiences of two children living with mothers who have HIV by conducting two case studies. Mother-child dyads were recruited from local HIV/AIDS centres and informed consent was obtained. The mothers were in the minor symptomatic phase of HIV-infection and the children were uninfected and aged between 10 and 12 years. Through semi-structured interviewing, the mothers provided background and contextual information about the children. Play techniques were used in the child interviews to encourage the introduction and exploration of issues salient to the children. Play facilitated engagement around sensitive and potentially anxiety-provoking material. A key issue for the children was their concerns about the anticipated deaths of their mothers. The children held misconceptions about the transmission of HIV/ AIDS. They feared HIV/AIDS and expected that others would have negative perceptions of them. Family processes such as secrecy and avoidance around HIV/AIDS-related issues were understood to perpetuate the children's fears and false beliefs in a broader community context that stigmatised HIV/AIDS. It was argued that the mothers' shame over HIV-infection and their need to protect their relationship with their children compromised their ability to communicate openly with their children and to offer them meaningful emotional support. Limited parental involvement was identified as the key contextual process that engendered vulnerability in the children, as they were isolated within and beyond the family. Recommendations to address the processes that engendered vulnerability in the children are discussed.

Resumen
The purpose of the study is to examine adult attachment relationships among a group of college students and their parents. Two attachment hypotheses were tested: The mental model hypothesis for attachments with parents and romantic partners and the compensation hypothesis for attachment with God. Hypothesis 1 attempted to determine if there was agreement between parents and children about a self-reported attachment style. Support was found as students and parents had a significantly higher level of agreement when reporting a secure style of attachment between them, with sons being significantly highest. Hypothesis 2 examined agreement on attachment style between generations: Children's report of attachments to parents and parents' report of attachment to their parents. Results indicated that parents' reporting a secure style of attachment to their parents was significantly higher with their same gender parents. Hypothesis 3 produced two 15 x 15 correlation matrices including measures of romantic attachment and religiousness for children and parents. In general, further validity for measures used is provided in numerous expected correlations. Anxious and avoidant romantic attachment styles and desperate love were significantly positively related and were often negatively related to a secure style of attachment. Results indicate significant relationships between fathers' and children's (particularly daughters') romantic styles. The only significant correlation for mothers and sons was on religiousness; however, mothers and daughters, fathers and daughters, as well as mothers and fathers were all significantly positively correlated on religiousness. Hypothesis 4 results indicated that when there was disagreement with fathers on attachment style, children scored higher on a measure of religiousness, supporting the compensation hypothesis. Hypothesis 5 found that children with secure attachments to both parents and mothers with high importance of religion also scored significantly higher on importance of religion, supporting the mental model hypothesis. Overall, this study suggests that the mental model and compensation hypotheses do not compete, but rather, coexist in different contexts, perhaps with mediating events that discriminate between the two processes.

This dissertation arises from the uneasiness resulting from the intersections of paths that make up my personal, professional and academic trajectory. In it, the focus is directed to the problematic involved in the mother-child relationship. When a child is born healthy, without malformation or sensory deprivation, parents generally find themselves in more favorable conditions to support the set of representations involved in the birth of a child. Accidents can have a disturbing effect on this group and produce a "wound" there. In many cases, there is disinvestment of the parents towards the child, which can be marked by the sign of pathology. This study takes a dip in the psychoanalytic theory in the subject. In this theoretical framework, language has a determining role in the structuring of the subject. Its logical antecedence is admitted in relation to the arrival of the baby to the world and that, thus, the child, is "captured" by the language, in other words, in the imaginary and symbolic networks of the Other that even precede the child’s arrival. It is recognized by this dissertation the recognition of the hypothesis of the unconscious, introduced by Freud (1900) and of the consequent theorization about the subject, developed by Jacques Lacan in his work. It is understood, therefore, that the child-language-other relationship is the soil of language acquisition and the constitution of the subject (Lemos, 1992). Psychoanalysis conceptualizes the mother-child relationship in a vertical way and throws light on the conflict involved in the idea of "catching the child by the other speaker". This work contributes, this way, to the understanding of situations where "something is not going well": situations that are resolved in complex clinical settings or in difficult relationships. This dissertation reflects a formation driven by the studies in the field of Language Clinic, led and constructed by Maria Francisca Lier-DeVitto, in the LAEL-PUCSP, in which an original direction of theorization and research focused on language pathologies are developed. This Research Group is linked to the Interactionism in Language Acquisition (Lemos, since 1992) and also Psychoanalysis. The encounter with this theoretical aspect has guided, as a sort of "lens", my discussion about the complex matrix that is the mother-child relationship and its effects on the acquisition of language and the structuring of the subject. Membership in the Acquisition, Pathologies and Clinical Clinical Research Group (LAEL-PUCSP / CNPq) stimulated and is in the basis of this this work’s discussions

The various transformations that Quebec society was undergoing throughout the 1980s are reflected in the dramaturgy of the period, notably in the critique of nationalist discourse, and in the writing of hitherto marginalized groups such as women, immigrants, and gays and lesbians.
The tensions within the family unit are one of the leitmotivs of Quebec theatre in the 1980s, which usually represents the mother either as a sort of monster who suffocates her children, or as a victim of the Law of the Father. When a woman decides to speak and to redefine motherhood, this dual model of the "patriarchal mother" crumbles and the universe of the family must be reconfigured.
In this thesis, we propose a semiological analysis for each of the plays of our corpus. The first chapter analyzes Addolorata, by Marco Micone. In this play, the mother's taking possession of speech not only destabilizes her family but also calls into question established structures within the Italo-Quebecois community. The second chapter examines Marie Laberge's Aurelie, ma soeur, a play which illustrates the (re)construction of the family unit around a nonbiological maternal bond. The third and final chapter studies Michel Marc Bouchard's Les Muses orphelines, in which access to speech and to the condition of mother is achieved through lies and truth. In the conclusion of this thesis, we bring together the principal characteristics of the feminine and maternal voices which are heard in the three plays, voices which are all defined by the desire, the need to affirm their subjectivity.

Diss., 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2588.

Texto completo
Resumen
The central problem in this dissertation entails how the concept volksmoeder (mother of the nation) gradually developed to secure a place in the Afrikaans drama. Chapter 1 determines the hypothesis of this dissertation. Chapter 2 focusses on the volksmoeder characteristics. The conclusion reached in Chapter 2 is that Maria in Langenhoven’s Die vrou van Suid-Afrika (1918) reveals similarities and contrasts with female characters in Dutch plays. Chapter 3 ascertains that characteristics of female personages as mothers of the nation determine their positions in patriarch/volksmoeder relationships in W.A. de Klerk’s Die jaar van die vuur-os (1952). Different types of volksmoeder appear in the above-mentioned farm play and in H.A. Fagan’s Ousus (1934). Chapters 4 and 5 identify how the present day volksmoeder in recent plaasdramas such as Deon Opperman’s Donkerland (1996), André P. Brink’s Die jogger (1997), Ek, Anna van Wyk (1986) and Die koggelaar (1988) by Pieter Fourie, indicate a further development in the concepts patriarch and volksmoeder. In the latter’s Koggelmanderman (2003) the man and woman are removed from the idea of gender.
Verskillende soorte volksmoeder -verskyn in bogenoemde plaasdrama en in H.A.

The purpose of this research is to explore how mothers deal with their grief for the children who died in traffic accidents. This study focused on grief reactions, adjustment strategies, and the factors that affect the process of their reactions and strategies, and the essential experience of their adjustment process were also included. The researcher of this article had tried to use “dual process model” (Stroebe & Schut, 1999) to explain the main structure of this study. In-depth interviews based on phenomenology were applied in this research, and three mothers who lost their children in traffic accidents were interviewed. The results of this research are summarized as follows: 1. Grief reaction The acts of grief are individually different. Grief reaction doesn’t exist alone by the stages but repeats similar acts back and forth. These reactions include: bad appetite, loosing weight, sleeplessness, denying, feelings of confusion and helplessness, sadness, crying, yearning, blaming the person causing the accident, sighing with emotion about the aloofness in the society. 2. Adjustment Strategy Planning, solving problems, turning to religion, venting emotionally, accepting, denying, repressing, and isolating psychologically are main issues of adjustment strategies when in grief. Funeral affairs and praying for blessings, worshipping the deceased persons constantly, suing people who caused the accidents, venting emotionally, keeping oneself busy, and focusing on work are practical ways of the strategies. 3. Factors that affect grief reactions and adjustment There are twenty factors including: 1) the relationship with the deceased person, 2) the situation of death form, 3) previous sad experiences, 4) mental situation of the bereaved one, 5) ages, 6) personalities; 7) cognition, 8) marriage, 9) family, 10) seeing the face of dead, visiting the tomb or grave tower, 11) career and income, 12) how to tell the dead news, 13) the understanding of death, 14) media, 15) races, societies and cultures, 16) religious or folk ceremonies, 17) social support system, 18) the environmental changes and secondary stress, 19) the opportunities for life, 20) the meaning of death and accepting the death or not. In these factors, religions and folk beliefs influenced the survivors so much. 4. Adjustment process of grief There are six themes of the study results in the adjustment process of the survivors after traffic accidents: 1)catharsis, 2) the connection between dealing with funeral and relativity, 3) deny and depress, 4) feeling the pain, 5) plan and solving the problems, 6) reborn. After exploring the phenomenology, there are individual differences and unique characters in the adjustment process. And “Time” is the best “doctor” or “treatment” to help those people facing the grief, experiencing the grief, and working through the grief. Besides, making a decision to forgive the troublemaker or making the decision not to be affected by the accident anymore that may be help those people who lost their children. To advise some specific points of view and to offer the reference when those people who are professional experts dealing with grief counseling or social service by the results; moreover, to offer suitable care and assistance. Hope the survivors after traffic accidents not to be the minority group in Taiwan.

"The Experiences of Black Mothers With Incarcrated Children: With a Focus on Their Sons". Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53705.

Texto completo
Resumen
abstract: The thesis for this study is that structural racism within the U.S. criminal system causes Black mothers to assume the emotional work of caring for incarcerated sons. This project was designed using an interpretive approach that employed a combination of qualitative and auto-ethnographic methods, drawing on grounded theory principle. Six interviews were conducted with mothers in order to gain in-depth insight into their lived experiences. An auto-ethnographic method was used to analyze the author’s own personal experiences as a family member of the incarcerated in dialogue with the experiences of the broader research population. Studies on the key finding of the psycho-social impacts on mothers with incarcerated sons have explored the relationship between the mental depression of mothers and their son’s incarceration. They have found that financial challenges, dwindling social connections, lousy parenting evaluations, as well as the burden of care of the grandchildren of the incarcerated sons are some of the mediating factors of this relationship. A second key finding also showed that incarceration have had social-economic effects on the prisoner’s families. These families experience extreme financial hardship as a result of incarcerated loved ones. Another finding showed the unique coping strategies for mothers included assuming care taking responsibility, maintaining family relationships, and budget control. Finally, this study found that there are challenges to re-entry experienced by mothers with incarcerated sons when their released. Research findings and original contribution to scholarly knowledge uncovered that Black mothers of the incarcerated in addition to working the Second Shift, are experiencing the phenomena of what is coined to be the “Third Shift.”

Henderson-Hubbard, Lisa Doris. "Urban African-American Single Mothers Using Resiliency And Racial Socialization To Influence Academic Success In Their Young Sons". Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2011-12-10384.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research study was conducted as a qualitative case study of five resilient single African-American mothers of successful young sons who attended an elementary school in a large urban school district. The study was designed to hear the voices of these mothers and their lived experiences using racial socialization to influence school readiness and academic achievement in their young sons. The intent of this case study was to broaden the limited qualitative research base on this population and inform administrators, educators, and other single parents about factors that may contribute to more positive academic outcomes for African-American males. This qualitative study used the actual words of the participants to tell their stories, as it provided rich descriptions of their lives. Data was collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, and the mothers' responses shaped the phenomena under study. Analysis occurred immediately after each interview, and analytic conclusions were formulated by coding and categorizing ideas or statements of experiences from the data to ensure that important constructs, themes, and patterns were noted. The results of this study yielded the following as it related to the voices of these resilient single African-American mothers: (1) these single mothers believe that their ability to overcome adversity positively influences their son's academic success; (2) these mothers also believe their upbringing has influenced their parenting style; (3) family, church members, and friends play an important role in supporting these mothers and sons; (4) church attendance and faith in God help these mothers to persevere in difficult times; and (5) racial socialization is a tool these mothers used to help their sons to be successful in school.
