Texto completoIn Ethiopia, women and female headed households make up significant share of farm households who are also extremely poor. In this thesis I provide evidence for the need to move beyond microcredit and promote a broader financial inclusion to affect a majority of farm households’ livelihood strategies, particularly technology adoptions. I use large and nationally representative panel of households obtained from rural Ethiopia as part of the World Bank’s LSMS-ISA to 1) understand constraints to technology adoptions, highlighting credit 2) assess whether microcredit is positioned to work for a majority of them. To the latter’s effect, I investigate decisions to participate in the credit markets and use a particular credit type; explore the relationship between formal and informal lenders - whether they serve as substitutes or complements. The last two decades has witnessed a dramatic expansion in the physical access to microcredit in poor, risky agrarian settings. There is limited penetration of banks and many households, especially small and marginal farmers rely on informal finance. For many, microcredit is introduced to rescue poor borrowers by reducing institutional credit constraints and their reliance on informal finance. So one expects that the information technology and contract enforcement mechanisms of microcredit lenders to lie between the two extremes. I employ state-of-the-art and complex econometric methodologies which allow to obtain more reliable results and, hence, more specific contributions to research and practice.

Texto completoA large portion of the published literature has now clearly shown that health is largely determined by factors other than medicine and health care, such as the social, environmental, economic and behavioural contexts. The issue of health inequalities lies at the intersection of several disciplines, from social sciences to medical ones, from economic to politics, to the moral and ethical aspects of human rights. Differences in mortality and morbidity between socioeconomic groups have been documented since the beginning of the century. Fewer and fewer people are dying from infectious diseases, with a corresponding raise in those who develop chronic illnesses. The increase in risk factors such as unhealthy lifestyles, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol use has led to the development of chronic diseases earlier in the increasingly urbanized environment, and health systems are not yet totally prepared to handle the request for care and treatment. Often the poorest are, together with their families, in a constant fight against economic and social damage that can result from a long illness. In particular, at present, cancer remains the second leading cause of death, without taking into account the economic costs to society. In the light of this, we thought useful to analyse and investigate the current situation of the incidence and mortality from cancer, and the association between the incidence of the disease and the socioeconomic conditions. In the first part, we focus on the elaborate theoretical approaches to inequalities in health and determinants of health, integrating the epidemiological and sociological approach. To understand the significance of this issue, we have given a comprehensive description and analysis from the numerical point of view. The analysis showed large differences, especially in terms of geographical distribution. Finally, we have focused on new models of care for chronically ill patients, particularly the Chronic Care Model, whose general principles are now recognized as fundamental. This model is representative of the new medical paradigm, which aims to empowerment of the patient, and community and qualification of the care team.

Texto completoThe aim of this work is evalutaing gender différences in spatial navigation according to visuo spatial working memory (VSWM) loading hypothesis. The results show that women rely more on landmark information, ,men on géométrie feature of thé environment while orienting (experiment 1). Gender différences émerge early in thé development : Girls successfully manage landmark information earlier than boys, around to 8 years. In thé same developmental phase émerges their difficulty, in terms of path traveled, when landmark is absent (experiment Il). When spatial orientation task is easy, women rely more then men on verbal stratégies (experiment III). On thé contrary, when spatial task became complex, women cope with spatial information relying on both spatial and verbal processes; men adopt essentially spatial processing for both type of tasks (experiment IV). The fifth and sixth experiments reveal women difficulties when a switch to a more complex spatial représentation is needed (experiment V) or when an active manipulation of spatial information is required(experiment VI). In summery, gender différences in orientation task émerge, favoring men, when thé task became complex and when spatial représentation requires an active manipulation. It's possible that thé concern is in terms of style and attitudes rather than global ability in navigation, suggesting that men and women posses a différent mental organization of spatial information with différent level of specialization and lateralization, regardless to tasks complexity and level of passive load of VSWM

Texto completoThe transition to primary school constitutes an event of a great impact on the construction of children’s Self-image. In this environment, children are confronted with new learning tasks, which should develop curiosity, interest, motivation, and confidence in their own abilities, with positive effects on their well-being. However, in the face of the teacher's demands, feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and refusal often arise. This can be particularly noticeable in the case of difficulty in learning, as learning how to read and write properly is one of the abilities on which children and their parents have greater expectations at the beginning of school. In such a challenging environment, children can develop resources that it is good to support. Based on these assumptions, three studies were conducted with the aim of: a) exploring the child's experience of well-being in a quali-quantitative way (study 1); b) identifying the factors that can affect the child's experience of well-being in the school context, through an integrated study of the characteristics of the child and his/her parents (study 2); c) implementing and evaluating a program to enhance literacy abilities and well-being of school-age children (study 3).

Texto completoThis thesis aims at the formulation of a model of analysis for the processes involved in empathy, that should enable the construction of an evaluation scale for the individual quotient of relationality within an online learning community. Chapter one gives a short survey of the main approaches to the study of empathy in online learning practices, with a focus on the social presence factor. Chapter Two offers an analysis of simulationism, the theory which is commonly believed to give the best possible foundations to empathetic interaction within a framework where a face-to-face relationship is missing. Chapter Three reviews all the elements that build up the research framework, whereas Chapter Four clarifies the methodological structure and the tools of which we avail ourselves. The main points of this inquiry are dealt with in depth in Chapter Five, which concentrates on the cognitive, relational and linguistic dimensions within which the quotient-of-relationality indicators are selected. Chapter Six gives an analysis of the data thus collected and an interpretation of the results, and therefore it represents the experimental section of the present work.

Texto completoThe formulation of a protective anti-HIV vaccine based on the used of sintetic HIV peptides is limited by their poor immunogenicity. Taking advantage of known immunomodulatory properties of BCG and identified immunogenic viral epitopes in an African sub-population (Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and West-Camerun), we verified the induction of humoral and cellular response towards these epitopes. First of all we evaluated the potential toxicity of the product used by checking if the contemporary administration of these peptides with BCG or the administration of an HIV-peptide recombinant BCG could interfere with immunological response to BCG. We evaluated the adjuvant capabilities of wild-type BCG and of recombinant BCG both in a mouse and in non-human primate models to generate a pediatric vaccine against mother to child transmission (MTCT) of HIV virus through breast feeding.

Strengthened, the transformations through the process of globalization, the effort to comprehend them is a epistemological fight which resulted in a fruitful theoretical production and in a recognition of communication as science which better expresses time; the interdisciplinary approach or the paradigm of complexity as perspective of analysis in the approach of the communicative processes of current days. In face of the disseminations of non-educative practices, transmissions of moral anti-values, the social inequality and the lack of family structure, there is a concern with the familiar representations showed in the plots of the soap operas, which makes us reflect about the pedagogical action, which supports this thesis, in particular the adults-parents who watch TV.

Texto completoThe pedagogical reflection on environment is a complex field of study, connoted by many visions and interconnections with other branches of research on environmental issues. The choice to focus my attention on some theoretical positions arisen in American, British and Australian contexts is linked to the will to find emblematic roots of environmental education in western cultures (first part of the work). The second part of the dissertation is an overview of some recent research strands of the pedagogical reflection on environmental issues. Human responsibility towards natural resources puts human beings at the core of education and calls for active involvement in change and creativity to imagine new scenarios. The ability to transcend the immediacy of space and time boundaries and the limits of development models implemented so far requires that everyone involved in education should commit themselves to environmental protection and social justice with hope.

Texto completoEffects of FANS on colon anastomosis repair in a rat model of peritonitis Background. In this study we aimed to investigate the effects of Diclofenac and Ketorolac on the healing of colonic anastomoses in the presence of polymicrobial sepsis. Materials and Methods. Sixteen Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups. Cecal ligation and puncture were performed for peritonitis. On the day after, an anastomosis of the left colon was performed and all rats received antibiotic (Imipenem) and analgesic therapy (Dolorex). In group C (control group) no other therapies were administered. In group K, 6 rats received 5 mg/kg of Ketorolac. In group D, 6 rats received 4 mg/Kg of Diclofenac. The drugs were administred subcutaneously at costruction of colonic anastomosis and were repeated (every 24 hours) for 4 day at the same dose. On postoperative day 7, all animals were killed and anastomotic macroscopic appearence, bursting pressures and microcirculation were measured. Tissue samples were obtained for further investigation of histological parameters and immunohistochemistry for VEGF. Results. There were no significative differences, for all variables measured, among the groups, in particular FANS groups provided greater mucosal re-epitheliazation compared to control group. Conclusion. This study showed that the administration of FANS dosen’t affect anastomotic colonic healing in rats peritonitis.

Texto completoThe fragmentation of services for elderly with multimorbidity and frailty does guarantee neither effective and efficient care, nor the satisfaction of patients and their families. At international level, for decades, organizational models for “intermediate care” have been developing, as solution to emerging problems (aging, chronic disease, multiborbidity and frailty), to avoide inappropriate hospital admission and to delay long-term care. Consistent with national documents, Emilia-Romagna Region has been redefining community services and the acute hospital network with the aim of ensuring continuity of care and integration between hospital and community services, especially for people with chronic diseases, developing intermediate care and activating bed-based intermediate care services (Community Hospitals). The research project aimed to define – through the identification and analysis of specific indicators – a structured method for monitoring health care provided to patients in Community Hospitals in terms of clinical, organizational and patient perspective. The organizational model has been examined comparing three Community Hospital of Emilia-Romagna Region. Indicators have been analyzed to describe patients discharged from the Community Hospital of Castel San Pietro Terme (Imola Local Health Authority). The structured analysis and the identification of emerging clusters of patients admitted in Community Hospital, could provide important input for the best planning of integrated care pathways for patients. The description of clinical pathway of patients admitted in Community Hospitals may help to better define organizational strategies for both acute and community care, both health and social assistance, to enhance responses to patients' needs.

Texto completoThis research has tried to analyse an aspect of the female condition in Gauls, based on the assumption that there were different realities, unified anyway by a complex class system that was itself divided and settled by laws universally accepted. Not only the women but also the men looked for integration with the Roman culture, the necessary condition for the provincials to maintain their privileges and to acquire new ones. This study identified the role played by the women in every sector of the society, with a particular attention to their perception of the Roman world they were living in. These women were obviously unfamiliar to the Roman mores and were considered by the Roman themselves as the antithesis of the model of pia et pudica matrona. In their own representations, the barbaric women appeared as Romains, following the stereotypes common in all the Empire. This research has also tried to verify how the provincials adapted themselves to the Roman model of the lanifica, the summa of the stereotypes, or, on the contrary, they refused some aspects of it; but also analysed how such a cultural model got into a province, the ways used to diffuse it, the historical and cultural reasons, and how it was accepted or refused by some regions of the Gauls. This work is an attempt to draw the role played by the women in a province that was a part of the Roman Republic and Empire, and was influenced by it, but also had significant regional peculiarities

Texto completoModellers’ choice on closure rules affects a CGE model results and consequently its policy prescriptions. In this thesis, the aim is to detect and assess this issue, both through a theoretical discussion and an empirical application. Starting from Amartya Sen’s 1963 paper, literature presents many contributions on this topic. Currently, the closure rule problem is not central in the CGE debate. After a brief introduction on CGEs, their development and their structure, a series of simple maquette is presented. They have the exemplary role of introducing the concept of closures, explain how they affect final outcomes and how this modeller’s choice is strictly connected to the macroeconomic foundation of the economic system. After theory, we move into the real World analyzing through different models (Neoclassical, “Bastard Keynesian”, and Structuralist/ Post- Keynesian), and through different closure rules for macro- aggregates (private, public and foreign savings) the impact of the Regional Trade Agreement of SADC with respect to the Mozambican economy. The Mozambican CGE models are calibrated on a 2003 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) and they are performed using GAMS/ MPSGE. Outcomes show that closure rules affect them and each model presents a set of policy prescription to implement the SADC agreement.

Texto completoThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of splanchnic hemodynamics after administration of terlipressin in combination intravenous infusion of octreotide. Terlipressin is used clinically in the treatment of selective variceal bleeding, the main complication of portal hypertension, without causing any of the dynamics emocoagulativa. The use of octreotide is well known as an effective therapy for variceal bleeding in cirrhotic patients by reducing portal pressure and blood flow portocollaterale. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacological effects of the association of terlipressin and octreotide in hemodynamics of the liver, with particular attention to the interaction between the hepatic arterial and portal flow in the pig.

Texto completoWhen environmental conditions are unfavorable to the growth, Bacillus and Clostridium bacteria (including Clostridium botulinum, the causative agent of foodborne botulism) form endospores, metabolically dormant cell types resistant to several adverse conditions and difficult to kill. However, under suitable conditions, spores resume the vegetative life by triggering the germination process. Thus, spores are dangerous agents of human foodborne disease and food spoilage. In this work, the strain Clostridium sporogenes UC9000, isolated from raw milk, was used like not-pathogenic model of Clostridium botulinum to better understand the mechanisms underpinning the Clostridium germination. Clostridium sporogenes is a species phylogenetically related to Clostridium botulinum and often used like its surrogate. Physiological studies revealed that UC9000 spores germinate in presence of L-alanine/L-cysteine in combination with L-lactate, while in silico analyses allowed the identification of homologues of the Bacillus germinant receptors responsive to L-alanine. The genome screening also detected genes coding for SleB, CwlJ and SleL, enzymes participating to the cortex degradation. CwlJ was found resident in the spore coat by performing a proteomic analysis, it was expressed in soluble form in E. coli and an in vitro assay of activity revealed its capability to induce germination when added exogenously to decoated spores
