New technologies such as distributed generation and electric vehicles are connecting to the electricity distribution grid, a regulated natural monopoly. Existing regulatory schemes were not designed for these new technologies and may not provide distribution companies with adequate remuneration to integrate the new technologies. To investigate how regulation should change in the presence of new technologies, current regulatory schemes and possible improvements to make them suitable for new technologies are reviewed. A Reference Network Model capable of calculating the costs of building a distribution network is utilized to compare the costs of accommodating different penetrations and locations of distributed generation. Results for residential generators with a 3 kW/unit power output show that as the penetration of generators among residential customers increases, costs initially decrease but then increase at higher penetration levels. A comparison of results for residential generators with results for distributed generator conurbations located far away from customers shows that residential and far away generators require similar investment costs when total distributed generation power output is lower than effective customer demand. However, when total distributed generation power output exceeds effective demand, residential generators necessitate higher investment costs than far away generators. At all levels of distributed generation power output, residential generators imply lower losses costs than far away generators. A second Reference Network Model capable of calculating the costs of expanding an existing distribution network is utilized to compare the costs of expanding a network to accommodate new technologies under different technology management approaches. Results show that network investment costs are lower for an actively managed network than for a passively managed network, illustrating the potential benefits of active management. Based on an analysis of the modeling results and the regulatory review, an ex ante schedule of charges for distributed generators that incorporates forecast levels of DG penetration is suggested to improve remuneration adequacy for the costs of integrating distributed generation. To promote active management of distribution networks, measures such as funding pots, outputs-focused regulatory schemes, and regulating total expenditure rather than separating the regulation of capital and operating expenditure are selected as proposals.

Texto completoSystem engineering is a domain that studies the conception of complex system. A system corresponds to a solution we want to develop, such as a train, a satellite network, etc. A complex system is composed of several independent elements Engineers work from lists of individual expectations regarding the system to be or what it is supposed to do, which they use to create a system and see if it answers expectations. To gain time and money, we would like to check that the system-to-be answers expectations before developing it: it requires to integrate expectations and specify how they should be put together, inducing a system expected that we can check. The goal pursued in this PhD is to provide a method to integrate information regarding a train system during conception, enabling the specification, representation and validation of its behavior

Systems engineering exists as a discipline to enable organizations to control and manage the development of complex hardware and software. These methods are particularly essential in the development of space systems, which feature extremely challenging demands for engineering performance, coupled with extremely limited resources for accomplishing them. Success requires careful attention to the relationships between various components as well as the organizations constructing them. Unfortunately, aerospace organizations routinely struggle with the traditional systems engineering process, and as a result, program managers experience pressure to conclude, curtail or ignore critical elements. The consequence is that cost overruns, slipped schedules and outright failures are a regular feature of the industry. Recent advances in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) tools and methods provide an opportunity to rectify these issues by better integrating systems engineering capabilities into the engineering development process. By directly networking the engineering models used in the development process to each other and the systems diagrams which describe them, MBSE has the potential to make the development process more responsive to design evolutions and account for changes across the entire space system. In this way, systems engineering could become a more integrated part of the development process and better contribute to successful space systems. Unfortunately, current-generation MBSE tools and methods have yet to fully realize this potential. Critical capability gaps have deterred adoption and relegated their use to academic endeavors. This thesis argues that many of the difficulties encountered in current systems engineering practice - as well as attempts to reform that practice - can be explained with reference to distributed cognition, control theory and the wider field of cognitive systems engineering. Existing tools and techniques, while nominally fulfilling the purposes assigned to them, generally fail to adequately support systems engineers in the cognitive tasks associated with the control and management of development processes. As a result, systems engineers are frequently overburdened in their roles and are unable to fully address the myriad of concerns relevant to the design of good system solutions. A cognitive analysis of the software and hardware devices situated in practical instantiations of development activities can reveal opportunities to improve performance and enhance effectiveness. Such changes would make systems engineering tools easier to use and better tailored to the needs of the system engineering task, encouraging adoption and accomplishing the goals of the MBSE community. A cognitively-informed MBSE approach, in addition to better linking the elements of the engineering effort, can also be used to link the engineering effort to the higher-level needs which drive the engineering process in the first place. One of the biggest challenges any engineering organization faces is managing the "how," "why," and "what" of system development, that is, the engineering logic which determines "how" a given program or system will be built and the business, political or policy logic which determines "why" and "what" system will come into being. Often, these latter concerns are poorly addressed by the space system development process, which can lead to sub-optimal outcomes for the wider organizations involved in the engineering project. Methods which better systematize, quantify and direct the process of stakeholder analysis, concept generation and architecture exploration can aid in the selection of system architectures that better meet the strategic objectives of the organizations which develop and operate space systems. Such methods are demonstrated with respect to an evaluation of possible architectures for a notional large, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) optical space telescope to succeed Hubble in the late 2020s to early 2030s timeframe. This research draws on MBSE concepts and the legacy of tradespace modeling for system design to extend tradespace modeling to the realm of architectural exploration. Its particular interest is the quantitative treatment of "programmatic factors": the business, policy and political considerations which govern high-level decision-making. Through modeling, these considerations can be directly associated with engineering performance factors, enabling better selection decisions and reinforcing linkages and understanding between the engineering and management levels within an organization. It is intended to leverage existing work in stakeholder modeling, real options, strategic evolution and tradespace exploration to bridge existing divisions between systems engineering and programmatic decision-making processes which can lead to poorly optimized architectures. It is geared towards systems engineers and program managers seeking to account for organizational and higher-level stakeholder needs during the tradespace exploration process and more efficiently and practically integrate these decision frameworks in real-world engineering environments.

Texto completoDuring the development process of an interactive system, different actors collaborate in the activities of this process and several design choices are made to converge to a solution that meets both user needs and requirements. To achieve this solution, many artifacts are produced, used and reviewed by the various stakeholders of the process. In order to communicate on particular points of an artifact, to collaborate in its elaboration or simply to add additional information, annotations can be created on these artifacts. Depending on the annotations and their contents, some artefacts may subsequently evolve, thus reflecting the influence of annotations on these artifacts and therefore reflecting their influence on the project. Thus, it is possible to consider annotations as a versatile tool playing a significant role in the design process. Nevertheless, several issues can be identified regarding the integration of annotations within the activities of the design process of interactive systems. First, the role of annotations is not clearly defined in the different design processes. While there is a widespread and a ubiquitous use of annotations in the design of interactive systems, current design processes do not address how to relate them to the tasks to be performed and the artifacts to be produced. Secondly, an annotation can be related to several artifacts as each models are giving a complementary representation of the interactive system. However, the multiplicity of artifact types and tools for creating these artifacts is a problem since each tool that provide features for annotations implements their own annotation model. These models are usually restricted to one type of artifact: the one handled by the tool. This implies that the annotations produced within a project are scattered by sets and that each these annotation set is closed to a single type of artifact. This PhD thesis is based on an analysis of annotations and their uses as well as on the W3C "Web Annotation Data Model" recommendation to propose an annotation model and an architecture to centralize the annotations of a project. This architecture also allows to include the annotations support on various tools and type of artifacts. This contribution has been applied on three different case studies to explore the possible integrations of annotations within a design process. The first case study demonstrates the integration and customization of annotations within a prototyping tool. The second case study focuses on the presentation of a tool allowing to consult in a single view all the annotations created on different artefacts and on different models of a project. The third case study illustrates an integration of annotations into an industrial environment that includes existing tools and an existing design process. Thus, these contributions around annotations are used as a basis for the realization of complementary works such as the use of annotations to structure and connect the different models of an interactive system, the use of annotations as a resource for the decisions making processes, and the use of annotations to study the traceability of the evolution of an interactive system. Indeed, by linking the artifacts to each other using annotations and justifying the choice of designs with annotations, it would be possible to ensure the traceability of the different design choices made during a project as well as the traceability of the impact of these different choices on the artifacts

Texto completoToday’s information systems engineering involves large number of stakeholders, wide geographical distribution and wide range of tools. Success in system engi-neering depends on effective human communication. Early understanding and modelling of the problem domain is a key to manage large scale systems and pro-jects. This requires stakeholders to reach a certain level of shared interpretation of the domain referred throughout the development
We propose a method for semantics driven change impact assessment. In our method, first a collaborative problem analysis is conducted. The problem analysis results in an agreed and committed common understanding of the prob-lem domain, expressed in a conceptual domain model. The constructed concep-tual domain-specific model is then actively used as a communication medium, e.g., to abstract development objects from representation format in order to expli-cate their semantics. Stakeholders browse the domain model and interactively as-sociate to product fragments by selecting concept clusters that best describe the contents (intended meaning) of the product fragments.
Associations of the development objects with concepts from domain model, as well as the domain model itself constitute the basis for change impact assess-ment throughout the development. Every revision of a development object in-vokes change impact notifications that are either confirmed or rejected. Accumu-lated statistics are used to refine associations via the domain model to the direct dependency links among development objects.
The method has been implemented in a prototype system CO2SY and has been evaluated in an experiment, where a set of test users has been provided with a problem domain description including a domain model and a set of develop-ment objects. The experiment was based on two real world cases. Users were asked to perform tasks using the prototype and two comparative tools. The method and prototype have been evaluated with respect to actual performance and users perceptions. The result shows actual effectiveness, perceived ease of use and usefulness comparing to other tools used in the experiment, as well as intention of the subjects to use the method in future.
A discussion of future research directions and possible revisions of the method concludes the thesis.

Texto completoSystem evolutions have to be managed to ensure system effectiveness and efficiency through its whole lifecycle, particularly when it comes to complex systems that take years of development and dozens of years of usage. System Reconfiguration is key in complex systems management, as it is an enabler of system flexibility and adaptability regarding system evolutions. System reconfiguration ensures operational effectiveness and increases system qualities (e.g., reliability, availability, safety, and usability). This research has been conducted in the context of a large international aerospace, space, ground transportation, defense, and security company. This research aims at supporting system reconfiguration during operations.First, we conducted a descriptive study based on a field study and a literature review to identify the industrial challenges related to system reconfiguration. The main issue lies in the development of reconfiguration support. More specifically, challenges related to data identification and integration were identified. In this thesis, we present the OSysRec ontology, which captures and formalizes the reconfiguration data. The ontology synthesizes the structure, dynamics, and management aspects necessary to support the system reconfiguration process in an overall manner.Furthermore, we present a model-based method (MBSysRec) that integrates system reconfiguration data and bridges both the engineering and the operational phases. MBSysRec is a multidisciplinary method that involves combinatorial configuration generation and a multi-criteria decision-making method for configuration evaluation and selection. This thesis is a step towards a model-based approach for system reconfiguration of evolving systems, ensuring their flexibility and adaptability

Texto completoIn using Modeling and Simulation for the system Verification & Validation activities, often the difficulty is finding and implementing consistent abstractions to model the system being simulated with respect to the simulation requirements. A proposition for the unified design and implementation of modeling abstractions consistent with the simulation objectives based on the computer science, control and system engineering concepts is presented. It addresses two fundamental problems of fidelity in simulation, namely, for a given system specification and some properties of interest, how to extract modeling abstractions to define a simulation product architecture and how far does the behaviour of the simulation model represents the system specification. A general notion of this simulation fidelity, both architectural and behavioural, in system verification and validation is explained in the established notions of the experimental frame and discussed in the context of modeling abstractions and inclusion relations. A semi-formal ontology based domain model approach to build and define the simulation product architecture is proposed with a real industrial scale study. A formal approach based on game theoretic quantitative system refinement notions is proposed for different class of system and simulation models with a prototype tool development and case studies. Challenges in research and implementation of this formal and semi-formal fidelity framework especially in an industrial context are discussed

During the development relational database management system is used for attribute data management, and object-oriented analysis and design is used for development of application to manipulate the data in the relational database management system. The cadastral data are separated into two parts and each part is handled separately. The first part is the geographic or spatial data. These data are handled by the help of the MapInfo Professional Version 6.5. The other part is the attributes of these spatial data. For this part, relational database is designed and implemented on Microsoft SQL Server Version 2000. During the development of the relational database, conceptual database design is performed by enhanced entity-relationship (EER) model. Then in the logical design, the conceptual model is mapped into the relational model. After data storage area is created, the application is developed on that data by using principles of object-oriented design and analysis and unified modeling language. By the help of the software developed, the data management can be carried out easily. By this study, a solution is proposed for the cadastral data management problem of the municipalities, and this study is one of the first studies developed for parcel related data using object-oriented approach for municipalities.

Texto completoContext: Software-intensive systems have been increasingly interoperated forming alliances termed as “Systems-of-Systems” (SoS). SoS comprises a collection of systems joined to achieve a set of missions that none of the systems can individually accomplish. Each constituent system keeps its own management, goals, and resources while coordinating within the SoS and adapting to meet SoS goals. Applications of SoS range from traffic control to emergency response and crisis management. As SoS often support critical domains, such systems must be trustworthy by dealing with malfunction or defects and avoiding failures that could cause extensive damage and losses to the users.Problem: Correct SoS operations depend on a precise specification of the SoS structure and a rigorous attestation of its behaviors. However, besides limitations on languages to jointly capture SoS structure and behavior, predictions on the SoS emergent behaviors rely on constituent systems not totally known at design-time. Therefore, SoS have been developed and deployed without evaluating their operation, since current languages do not support such precision in evaluation. Objectives: This PhD project provides solutions founded on a formal architectural description language to support an early evaluation of SoS behaviors regarding its inherent SoS structure and dynamics through simulations.Contribution: The main contributions of this project comprise (i) a model transformation approach for automatically producing simulation models from SoS software architecture descriptions, combining SoS structure and behavior description in a same solution, (ii) a SoS software architecture evaluation method for SoS operation prediction considering the inherent changes that can occur, (iii) environment modeling and automatic generation of stimuli generators to sustain the SoS simulation, delivering data to feed such simulation, and (iv) a method for the automatic synchronization between the runtime descriptive architecture (changed at runtime due to dynamic architecture) and its original prescriptive architecture based on model discovery and recovery mechanisms and a backward model transformation.Evaluation: We conducted case studies to assess our approaches using Flood Monitoring SoS and Space SoS.Results: Our approaches show a high accuracy to (i) produce fault-free and operational simulations for SoS software architectures, (ii) support a reliable evaluation and prediction of SoS operation at design-time, (iii) automatically generate stimuli generators to sustain and feed the simulation execution, and (iv) maintain the synchronization between descriptive and prescriptive versions of the SoS architecture. Conclusions: We concluded that the proposed approaches advance the state of the art in SoS software architecture evaluation by offering solutions to predict the SoS operations effectiveness to maintain a continuous operation despite architectural changes, providing more trust for users that in the future shall rely on SoS services

Patients who suffer from sepsis or septic shock are of great concern in the healthcare system. Recent data indicate that more than 900,000 severe sepsis or septic shock cases developed in the United States with mortality rates between 20% and 80%. In the United States alone, almost $17 billion is spent each year for the treatment of patients with sepsis. Clinical trials of treatments for sepsis have been extensively studied in the last 30 years, but there is no general agreement of the effectiveness of the proposed treatments for sepsis. Therefore, it is necessary to find accurate and effective tools that can help physicians predict the progression of disease in a patient-specific way, and then provide physicians recommendation on the treatment of sepsis to lower risk for patients dying from sepsis. The goal of this research is to develop a risk assessment tool and a risk management tool for sepsis. In order to achieve this goal, two system dynamic mathematical models (SDMMs) are initially developed to predict dynamic patterns of sepsis progression in innate immunity and adaptive immunity. The two SDMMs are able to identify key indicators and key processes of inflammatory responses to an infection, and a sepsis progression. Second, an integrated-mathematical-multi-agent-based model (IMMABM) is developed to capture the stochastic nature embedded in the development of inflammatory responses to a sepsis. Unlike existing agent-based models, this agent-based model is enhanced by incorporating developed SDMMs and extensive experimental data. With the risk assessment tools, a Markov decision process (MDP) is proposed, as a risk management tool, to apply to clinical decision-makings on sepsis. With extensive computational studies, the major contributions of this research are to firstly develop risk assessment tools to identify the risk of sepsis development during the immune system responding to an infection, and secondly propose a decision-making framework to manage the risk of infected individuals dying from sepsis. The methodology and modeling framework used in this dissertation can be expanded to other disease situations and treatment applications, and have a broad impact to the research area related to computational modeling, biology, medical decision-making, and industrial engineering.

Texto completoThis thesis surveys the current practices and advancements in SE education. We ended up proposing a novel solution for SE education (an approach with its supporting web-based platform). The proposed approach is based on the recommendations of academic and industrial communities. It is centered around the use of SE standardized processes and at the same time very adaptive, with learning scenarios that can be driven by the acquired or to-be-taught SE competencies. The proposed solution is a web based platform that has been developed to support this novel approach within a distant Project Based Learning (PBL) environment. The solution aims to ease the learning at the same time of fundamental principles and processes of systems engineering, along with communication, team management, collaboration, and related soft skills. On the other hand, educators will be able to better manage their learning scenarios, training resources, and the expected outcomes. Last, educators and students' organizations using this solution will be able to manage and normalize the competencies to be acquired by their future systems engineers at every level

Texto completoClassical organization in disciplinary silos in the industry reaches its limits to manage and control complexity. Problems are discovered too late and the lack of communication between experts prevents the early emergence of solutions. This is why it is urgent to provide new collaborative approaches and ways to exchange the models contents between various engineering fields, early and all along the development cycle. In this context, we are particularly interested in a synchronization approach of models between two engineering fields: system architecture design and dependability analysis. This work proposes a collaborative approach of synchronization of models. It takes into account the study contexts, applied processes, applied methods and viewpoint produced by engineers. Contributions address issues at levels of practices, concepts, implementation, applications and implementation of model synchronization

Texto completoThe primary goal of this thesis is to indicate how systems theory and engineering process modelling can be applied to provide models for consulting engineering service business enterprises. The typical management systems used for these businesses are investigated to determine the application of systems and process models. The motivation for this study is based on the fact that integrated management systems for consulting engineering practices are presently based on selective business analysis and process modelling that has evolved over time, as reported in a survey and study by Smit [110]. Furthermore, current engineering management systems are simply computer implementations of management procedures based on techniques that were developed to solve problems in the absence of the computational capabilities of the modern computer. To rectify this, a fundamental approach to analyse the business and management functions using systems theory and engineering process modelling techniques is required, which has not been attempted to date. This study develops and demonstrates the application of fundamental analysis in consulting engineering enterprise management and reviews advantages that can be obtained from using this approach. It is shown that the mathematical Algebra of Relations and associated Graph Theory provide the mathematical basis on which management problems can be treated systematically. Since these fields of mathematics are well developed and very broad, the essential parts of the theories are identified. Thereupon, the application of the very abstract mathematical concepts to two important and typical engineering management problems are developed, which represents the core contribution of the dissertation. The study is developed and presented in two parts and an addendum: 1. The first part provides an overview of the necessary mathematical theory required to support development of business models. 2. Management systems theory and relation- and graph theory-based engineering process modelling techniques are applied in this part to build generic enterprise models and data processing models. These models provide inputs for the management processes of professional service business enterprises. The outcome of the modelling and analysis is a set of database models with reporting functionality, to be used in the management process. A demonstration of technology available for development of the models and techniques, described in the previous part, is undertaken in this part. Generic implementations of database models and reporting techniques for systems which deal with management data in a consulting engineering business are developed, described and demonstrated. 3. In the addendum to the study, typical models and system functionality needed to support the management functions of the consulting engineering service business are identified. These management functions include: • Business strategy and long term planning • Marketing and promotion • Finance, including bookkeeping and auditing • Personnel • Facilities management and document management • Logistics, i.e., management of resources required for the business to operate • Knowledge management • Production management, i.e., management of the execution of project work • Administration • Risk management Production management can use the engineering process model approach, modelling the management of tasks, persons, datasets and tools as these are applied to the consulting engineering business. Sample subsystems to support selected management functions are identified and analysed. The integration of these systems with commercially available systems to support accounting and management reporting can follow from this analysis. The study contributes to the body of knowledge in the field of engineering management by providing insights into the application of a specific branch of mathematics to provide fundamental solutions to engineering management problems. It also shows how these solutions are mapped to the computer, and describes available information techniques and technology to support the mapping. The outcome is a document setting out the theory required to develop robust enterprise management systems, the development and demonstration of technology required to do this and, as an addendum, a high level specification of business and management system functionality required for the professional engineering service business.
