Texto completoThrough a general study of organisation and evolution of costumes in cinema in France, from the birth of the cinematograph to the end of the silent film era, the ambition of this thesis is to study the created links between fashion and cinema, looking at fashion houses participating in creating the costumes of the main movie star. It is also about highlighting what the impact of the costume designer in the costume conception of a character is. This thesis analyses the creation and the evolution of the costume in cinema, through the historical, human, economical and aesthetical perspectives. The first part tackles the birth of the cinematograph and the Lumiere’s operators capturing their first shots, created with the methods inherited from the theatre. Then, this thesis highlights how Georges Méliès styled his stars and extras at the Star Film. Moreover, it points out to the first movie stars realizing that their costumes begin to create their characters for Max Linder, Charles Chaplin and Pearl White. The second part addresses the way French cinema used fashion to try and compete with the American cinema. Then, in a third and fourth part, the analysis focuses on the work of the fashion house when it is called to create and lend (in response to the director) or to only execute (in response to the costume designer) the clothes of the lead actress, for costume movies or with a contemporary subject. Finally, the fifth part points out the convergence points between these two arts: fashion and cinema at a specific time, the end of WW1 where arts stimulate each other and create together the new style of this era. It’s also Louis Delluc’s project, inspired by a fashion review to create a cinema magazine, it’s the introduction of the Fashion Autumn Salon followed by the cinema one, it’s the realization that L’Inhumaine is the tilted point towards this new style and it’s the Art Deco Exhibition confirming fashion and cinema as arts, in this era called the Années folles

Texto completoThis research, by trying to understand better why the work of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami is so closed to us, has to give precise definition, through the study of his own style, of the invisible connections linking his films with contemporary cinema, art and philosophy. From philosophical Postmodernity to Hermeneutics, from Italian Neorealism to the recent minimalism in art and cinema, these connections will be questioned one by one, by trying to give the most precise field from which each of them is coming from or going to. After having described as precisely as possible these fields and the mechanisms that create this unexpected and familiar syncretism inside Kiarostami's films, a new thought emerges : How is it possible to make cohabitation of antic conception and modernity, of eastern and western cultures inside the same artistic world ? How can these elements stay together inside a permanently recomposed production, mixing cinema, video, photo, theatre and poetry ? Is this evolution of the work of Kiarostami not taking the risk of loosing its own identity by taking more and more distance with its original references ? We will answer to these questions without pretending to conclude, especially as we have to take as an account that the work of Kiarostami is still continuing its own way, as most of its main characters are doing, by following a zigzag and unfinished path

Texto completoThe two works devoted to the cinema, Movement-Image and Time-Image of Deleuze, constitute a philosophical text complexes which, on a side "problématise" the cinema as a specific mode of the image, and another "met en scene" the confrontation of the cinema and the philosophical thought. But this problematization and the mise en scene reveal the rupture forming "political" confrontation between the cinema and the philosophy, and constituting our principal problems. We approach this problem by three paradoxes of his theory (which constitute three of the essential aspects of montage), namely the representation, the obtusity and the politic, by analyzing the different manners of montage

Texto completoOur knowledge of French cinema from after the Second World War was built from the historical category of « qualité », the so-called « tradition de la qualité » and « qualité française ». Nevertheless, one can consider the latter as an obstacle to the historical knowledge of cinema from this period. Indeed, this category is not neutral because it results from the speeches of the « jeunes Turcs », who used it to oppose this cinema. Rather than abandoning it, it is best to reveal its meaning by questioning its origins and presenting the famous critical speech which constitute it, the « qualité » versus the « cinéma d’auteurs », within a vast discursive battle engaged since the French Liberation by the actors of the French cinema, about the support of the French State for quality films. This thesis intends to analyse this battle of quality, or the progressive implementation through speeches between 1944 and 1953 of the political model, nowadays, indissociable from Frenchcinema

Texto completoThis thesis analyzes the construction of French rurality's representations in terms of tensions between permanency and change, on the basis of a corpus of fiction films released between 1990 et 2012, which narration takes place in contemporary French countryside. By actively shedding light on the approach of the filmmakers who decided to root their films in the countryside, we question the way this decision impacts narrative techniques, directing or even casting. Films being living portraits, each one is a definition of the countryside, ideal or sensitive. What, and who do we see in those films? What do the characters do and what do they say? How do they live? Can we talk of a “school” or a “wave” defining this pivotal period? Despite the enduring power of old urban-centric stereotypes, these directors are set on off-centering the points of view to explore a human geography

Texto completoFrom the post-war period onwards, Italy witnessed the emergence of new “collective” approaches to film production: in the 1940s and 1950s, it took the form of cooperatives; and in the subsequent decade, it evolved into film collectives or independent film production units. These collaborative endeavors yielded a wide array of films, encompassing a rich diversity of themes and styles : from partisan films to “counter-newsreels,” from fictions to documentaries, culminating in the 1970s militant videotapes. All these films embraced a common political commitment: adopting a collaborative and independent approach for filmmaking as an alternative to the labor-divided and market-oriented film industry. In fact, these films neither embody a desire of withdraw nor a circumstantial response to an inability to break into the well-established commercial networks; on the contrary, they serve as the tangible expression of a deliberate and resolute choice, one made in direct defiance of the prevailing film production system. The neologism “counter-production” aims to underscore the interplay between two fundamental dimensions of the Italian collective cinema: on one hand, the critique of the production modes of “dominant” cinema and, on the other, the embrace of a collaborative approach for filmmaking. In other words, “to counter-produce” extends beyond the mere act of challenging the industry norms, it is also characterized by a critical perspective on certain militant cinematic forms that reduce films to useful tools for political messaging. This dissertation follows a twofold program: it seeks to underscore both the commonalities among these collective practices and the inherent uniqueness found within each cinematic form they explore. By examining a carefully selected body of materials – projects, theories, and collective utopias that surfaced on the “fringes” of Italian cinema during one of the most fertile periods of its history – the overreaching objective is to reevaluate the marginal status of this corpus: rather than occupying a secondary role, it appears to have served as a central and significant experimental ground for pioneering cinematic innovations in Italy from the 1950s to the 1970s

Texto completoAccording to the studies of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, the arrival of Italian neorealism is the crossing point between a classic form of film (The movement-image) and a modern one (The time-image). Such a distinction is widely endorsed by theorists, critics and historians of films. Far from corresponding to a historical rupture, it refers to two types of films that have their own characteristics. This study intends initially to approach, from Deleuze's typology, the specifics of each of these regimes in terms of creation. The films of Takeshi Kitano, Japanese filmmaker, and Hong Sangsoo, Korean director, are analyzed under this prospect. The former represent a structure based on a classical scheme, while the latter is based on the characteristics of modern film. The analyst also allows following the creative process of these two internationally renowned filmmakers. This study attempts secondly to illustrate that they have a universal perspective in terms of creation

Texto completoWe study a corpus of films dedicated to the liberation struggles around the Tricontinental from 1966 to 1975. The expression "Tricontinental" applies to the three continents of the third world (Africa, Asia and Latin America), and mainly the Tricontinental Solidarity Conference which took place in Havana in1966, and also the organization and the publication with the same name. Mehdi Ben Barka was the Chairman of the Preparing Committee of the Tricontinental event, which had to reinforce the unity of the struggling third world against imperialism, colonialism and neo-colonialism all over the world. First, we show the genesis of cinema in the liberation struggles (the Algerian war of independence). Then we create a corpus of films around the tricontinental constellation, taking into account the posters and the animated images. This corpus is located at two main places: Africa and Latin America, at the background of Vietnam war. It includes works directed by: Santiago Álvarez, Julio García Espinosa, Mario Handler, William Klein, Yann Le Masson, Glauber Rocha, Alberto Roldán, Ugo Ulive, René Vautier. Various texts were written accompanying this cinema of third world’s liberation. We examine theories and manifestos such as: "For a Parallel Cinema (Anonymous)", "Esthetic of violence" (G. Rocha), "Towards a third cinema" (F. Solanas and O. Getino), "For an Imperfect Cinema" (J.G. Espinosa). The stylistic and the formal characteristics of these films are analyzed, in order to question the crossing from the hour of furnaces to the hour of the ashes and confusion, thinking about the theoretical and practical impact of these films

Texto completoBy adopting, in a line anchored on local governance models inherited from the past, the strategy of organizing a macro-event to realize an unprecedented series of urban transformations, Barcelona has given itself body and soul to a constructive fever from which the city of today is the result. The present study searches among the cinematographic representations made between 1992 (symbolical date which includes those which were developed with the objective of the Olympic Games) and 2017, date of commemoration, echoes and symptoms of a relative and incomplete change in perception, compared to the Barcelona Model. This thesis maintains that, at the turn of the century, the old reluctance to speak about success, strongly encouraged by institutions, gained momentum and found in cinematographic creation a mode of expression and a channel of communication. Step by step, a counter-discourse emerged and the cinema helped to make it visible. Through the cinema shot in Barcelona, are narrated twenty-five years of an urban biography that has multiplied anchors to achieve and maintain effective centrality as a global city. But as it accumulated successes in its desire of internationalization, it fully integrated, as our corpus shows, the dynamics of transnational problems and became not only a model to follow but also to avoid. Synecdoche of the contemporary city in a deeply urban world in the era of globalization, the Barcelona of today seeks among its images to place itself into an axial dialogical tension between pertinence and im-pertinence

This study focuses on the french « media chronology », and its future against technological developments in the audiovisual and cinematographic industry. The « media chronology » system is a mecanism part of the cultural exception. It is a rule that sets time differences between the release of a film in theaters and its distribution on other media : videograms such as DVDs and Blu-rays, transactional video on demand (« VàDA »), television or subscription video on demand (« SVOD »). It is a real pillar in the financing of the French film production, but the emergence of new digital players such as SVOD plateforms unbalance it. It is therefore necessary to rethink the model while drawing inspiration from foreign models such as the Canadian media chronology, in order to take better account of these developments.

Texto completoHybrid image born of the contamination of the film image by the video image and then by the digital image, the unhealthy image of the American cinema during the nineties stemmed from the technological changes of the end of the 20th century. Indeed, from an aesthetic point of view, the unhealthy image, usually close to the borders of the ethics of representation, cannot be the result of a moral sentence administered by a looking at a watched. It cannot follow from a judgment of value, difficult to analyze, but must be treated as a medical metaphor, able to highlight the dangerous relationships that may have existed at the end of the 20th century. Also, she sketches, by reinvent the material and language of the traditional American movie, the cinema of the future. Modification of the genetic code of the image, the birth of a representation of the digital body, or the insatiable des ire to mix all sorts of visuals to create out-of-the-ordinary compositions, a lot of factors that push the nineties cinematographic image to reinvent herself. The image was already abject, grotesque, perverse or even pornographic in the American cinema of the Seventies, it will become, hybrid, mutant, and definitely unhealthy in the nineties
Melquiond, Anne-Lise. "Apocalypse et fin du monde dans les séries télévisées américaines". Thesis, Paris 10, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA100074.
Texto completoThis doctoral dissertation aims at analyzing discourse in apocalyptic American TV series since 2001. Our corpus of analysis is composed of TV series only. Indeed, because of their specificities (the depth of time, the complexity of the narrative fabric or the reception of fiction within the home field) TV series summon the new contemporary myths. The end of the world and its catastrophes are angles worth studying in TV series: Doesn’t the representation of catastrophe illustrate the consciousness of the finiteness of our world? Through the analysis of the unique features of apocalyptic series, one may wonder how to survive when everything has collapsed. Furthermore, apocalyptic TV series offer a salient characteristic: the notion of series is based, among other features, upon an extended period of time and constantly pushes the question of its own end towards a perpetual renewal. The series which never ends coming to an end while tackling the subject of the end of time appears indeed as a contradiction. Besides, the antagonists take the shape of humanoid robots, zombies or aliens. Yet, these characters overshadow the real threat. That is to say global warming as well as all the industrial disasters. Wouldn’t we prefer to imagine the end of the world rather than the end of capitalism? The corpus is composed of the following TV series, hereby noted in the alphabetical order: Battlestar Galactica, Designated Survivor, Falling Skies, Jericho, The 100, The Last Man on Earth, The Leftovers, The Walking Dead and Revolution

Texto completoThis study focuses on the representation of post-apartheid space in indigenous South African fiction films. I work towards a definition of cinematic post-apartheid space, putting forth its ambivalent relations to the apartheid past, between heritage and rejection, on the levels of geographical space, socio-economic space and, mostly, represented space. I situate myself at the intersection of South African cultural studies and reflections on post-apartheid space, and of the study of the new South African cinema. I focus on fiction since it gives most room for filmmakers to represent space as they perceive it, or desire it, to be, and on feature films which carry most of the South African industry’s ambitions in terms of international recognition.I first look at the heritage of apartheid in terms of the South African film industry, the divisions of the national territory and the structure of the South African city. I argue that post-apartheid cinematic space is first and foremost defined in relation to apartheid space, whether in opposition or in terms of heritage. However, recurrent representations of individual trajectories clash with that inherited geography and are a means for filmmakers to distance themselves from the previously prescribed relations between characters and space. I also argue that the definition of a new South African identity is crucial to the characterization of post-apartheid space in films. The ambiguous representations of township space or African foreigners in South African films and the emphasis on the nationality of films in film reception put forth how deeply paradoxical the reinvention of space and identity is in post-apartheid South Africa

Texto completoThis study is about the analysis of the coexistence of reality and imagination in the work of Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The modalities of encountering and crossing of these two dimensions in a film or between films are clarified through practical and detailed observations. On the basis of an analysis of the influence of two different cultures – the Thai indigenous sensibility and the tendency of Western experimental cinema –, we search on the one hand the modalities of capturing the scenes of real life, and on the other hand how to discover and reveal the invisible side that surrounds this visible field. The narrative of his films is represented in a diverse way by deviating from the classical rule. In the process of forming a narrative, heterogeneous materials are embraced and various texts are connected. Moreover, the flexible and free world of Weerasethakul always presupposes virtual multiple times, an essential characteristic that can be found in all his works, from short films to installations to the feature films. Therefore, the distinction between the real dimension and the unreal / surreal dimension loses clarity; the line of distinction is virtually canceled. The filmmaker thus proposes another view of the world based on the Thai Buddhist tradition that might seem absurd from the point of view of modern rationalism of the West. By crossing the discussions around the hybrid world of Weerasethakul, this study aims to demonstrate that his cinema (re)finds the beauty and power of reality through the imagination

Texto completoWith the study of Roman Karmen’s cinematographic work, we want to retrace a heritage and to identify its implications through an historiographical approach. Not only did the Soviet filmmaker’s images go down in history but they also contributed to shape the twentieth century into a single object. Indeed, the metonymic properties of Karmen’s shootings (cinematographic photography and live action) upset our perception and contributed to build an historical account that sustains a new order. It is a complex visual narrative bringing together live action and staging, subjects and emblems, main characters, secondary characters and anonymous masses. Disseminated, Roman Karmen’s work is the main reservoir of “archival images” often used by contemporary documentary filmmakers as a mean to present “first-hand History”. Following Roman Karmen’s artistic itinerary allows us to gain a better understanding of these images: their initial purposes, their making process, and their relationships in a work within which story merges with History. We assume that this narrative consisting of pictures, cinematic newsreels, and documentary films shaped the “Soviet vulgate of history”

Texto completoUntil the end of the twentieth century, studies on Iranian cinema consider the Islamic Revolution of 1979 as a turning point in the history of this cinema, i.e. they divide its history in two eras, pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary. This research joins the recent idea that this national cinema emerged as a continuous progression dominated by contradictory and ambiguous cultural policies. In the first chapter of this essay, we will paint a general picture of the history of Iranian cinema, and its festival culture in particular. We will clarify the political and cultural incentives that orchestrate the decisions of the authorities and the industry’s professionals. The second chapter will question the notion of national cinema, and will apply this notion to Iranian cinema. Special attention will be paid to the Farabi Cinema Foundation, a key institution in the promotion of Iranian national cinema and in the emergence of Iranian films in international film festivals. Thereafter, the third chapter will present the role of festivals in the film industry and an analysis of the evolution of Iranian films presented at the Montreal World Film Festival in order to demonstrate the influence of vague Iranian cultural policies on the presence of Iranian films in Western films festivals.

Texto completoFragments of Aleppo draws a navigation through images of war. It begins in 2016, year of the intensification and conclusion of the civil war in Aleppo. It is an attempt from the author to find the key points of the building of the collective imagination as regards war and the Arab world. Embedded in a technical memory where the history of the representation of the Middle East seems determined by the transformations engendered by the digital age, this navigation becomes a site of digression that wants to interrogate images of war through the texture of the screens that broadcast them.

Texto completoThis research presents an analysis of collaboration in Pierre Perrault’s film projects. Since collaboration between filmmaker and participants raises ethical issues, this research examines two pivotal films in Perrault’s career: Pour la suite du monde and La bête lumineuse. Contrasting the filmmaker’s discourse with that of Stéphane-Albert Boulais, a protagonist in one of the movies, this study details the power dynamics linked to representation and analyzes the filmmaker’s ethics. This research presents a full description of Pierre Perrault’s approach to filmmaking, as well as his practice in both shooting and editing the movies. It focuses on two film locations to highlight Perrault’s practices before, during and after the shooting of these movies. It then looks at Stéphane-Albert Boulais, whose many writings documenting his filmmaking experiences, provides multiple views on collaboration. Following a comparative study of both film locations, this research concludes with a detailed analysis of Perrault’s ethics within the framework of collaborative projects.
