Texto completoYoung children, before ent4ering into kindergarten, may have gone through various modes of nursing. Our research details with the effects of this mode of nursing as the detected in the first year of kindergarten, on a sampling of children respectively nursed by their mother, a maternal assistant or in a lady nursery. The scope of the study includes analyses of the behavior of the children in the classroom and in the playground one month after school return, en the second and in the third quarter. We analyze the behavior modes concerning social relations hip between children and with the teacher, and concerning equipement use and activities. Our results indicate that a stable and collective mode of nursing has positive influence on integration into kindergarten, mainly on the point of view of social relationship. The children nursed by their mother or by their nurse use different behavioral modes: they are slower to integrate into the group of equals; they are more dependent on the adult

Texto completoWomen's participation in the labour force doesn't depend only on economic variables such as women' wage and family incom e. In fact we always have to take into account the impact of child care modes on this participation. For this reason, the presence of relatives in the household, who constitute a potential source for child care, has also an affect on woman's decision to participate in the labour force. Considering the impact of female participation on the labour market , we find that the increase in the number of women in the labour force has a negative effect on the wage level of younger workers

Texto completoIn France, work-family policies rely mainly on the development of formal childcare. Yet grandparents still have an important role in the daily arrangements of families. How can this involvement of grandparents be explained? By allying the contributions of the sociology of the family and the studies on work-family reconciliation, and based on the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, this thesis examines to what extent the efforts of parents to articulate professional time and family aspirations are often stopgap solutions made on a daily basis. The use of grandparental childcare is a case study for such analysis. This thesis focuses on two logics. First, while there is a norm of what is good grandparenting that determines the way grandparents should get involved in childcare, it originates from the upper-classes and is not homogeneously internalized in all social categories. Parents' educational strategies and expectations regarding grandparents differ according to their social background. Second, professional, family and institutional contexts act as constraints and opportunities that influence parents' daily arrangements and lead them to modify their educational strategies as to the degree and forms of grandparents' involvement. The analysis of the articulation of these logics makes it possible to identify four types of use of grandparents for the care of young children: temporary fix care, routine care, intensive care and leisure care. This thesis also shows how grandparent involvement affects child development. It invites us to consider grandparental childcare as a broad set of practices through which inequalities can be transmitted

Texto completoFamily policies in Europe have undergone significant changes in the last few decades, improving the well-being, functioning, and responsibilities of families with children. This thesis aims to investigate how paternity leave policies impact parental mental health as well as explore how Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) impacts children's socio-emotional development throughout childhood. The first article of this thesis examines the relationship between paternity leave uptake in France and mothers' and fathers' post-partum depression two months post-birth, using data from a nationally-representative birth cohort. Fathers who took paternity leave as well as fathers who intended to take paternity leave had lower odds of PPD compared to fathers who did not take paternity leave. Conversely, mothers whose partner took paternity leave had higher odds of PPD.The second article of this thesis explores the relationship between different types of ECEC attendance (centre-based childcare, informal childcare, and exclusive parental care) prior to primary school on children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms from 5-13 years across five European countries. The study found that children who attended centre-based childcare have slightly lower internalizing and externalizing symptoms between 7-13 years, but children who attended informal childcare had higher internalizing and externalizing symptoms between 7-13 years. This thesis highlights the importance of considering aspects such as mental health and children's development when developing family policies. Further research is needed to understand the effects of a longer paternity leave on mother's PPD. Additionally, policies that enhance access to affordable, subsidized centre-based childcare prior to primary school can be one step in improving children's socio-emotional development

Texto completoThis thesis aims to comprehend how children in joint physical custody evolve themselves in terms of socio-emotional adaptation and quality of life and analyzing the factors that could have an impact on their socio-emotional development. This study is based on a theoretical eco-systemic approach (Bronfenbrenner, 2005). Considering person, family and context to be the scales of comparision for the development of these children. The operational model of« the Process–Person–Context–Time » (Bronfenbrenner, 1996), allowed us to analyze the contribution of the aforementioned factors on these children.According to this perspective, 38 families having 56 children between the ages 4-12 years old in joint physical custody participated in this study through a questionary. The socio-emotional development was analyzed by taking into account the « Autoquestionnaire Qualité de vie-Enfant-Imagé » (A.U.Q.U.E.I. ; Manificat & Dazord, 1997) and the « Child Behavior Checklist » (C.B.C.L. ; Achenbach, 1991). The mothers and/or the fathers were also queried to evaluate their parenting abilities by using several tools as follows the « Coparental Interaction Scale » (Ahrons & Wallisch, 1987), the « Parenting Alliance Inventory » (Abidin & Brunner, 1995) and the « Post-Divorce Conflict Scale » (Sonnenblick & Scharwz, 1992). The post-conjugal relationship was analyzed by the following « Coparental Interaction Scale, nonparental dimension » (Ahrons & Wallisch, 1987) and « Attachment Scale » (Kitson, 1982).Our principal results indicate that children in joint custody testify globally a satisfactory quality of life particularly in the sphere of family upbringing. Also approximately three quarters of the total children can be placed in the non- pathological zone on the internalized adaptation and the externalized adaptation scale. Amongst the factors taken into consideration, we note that first of all there is a significant effect of the sex and age of the children between 4 to 6 years tend to show less personal internalizing problems. While the girls can be placed on the pathological scale of externalizing adaptation in a larger number compared to the boys. Secondly, the results reveals that the co-parental relationship influences the socio-emotional development of children and that the covert hostility constitutes the most raddled risk factor. However, this result varies according to the age of children. Finally, the impact of the characteristics of the context is highlighted, namely the post-conjugal relationship, the degree of hostility before the separation and the type of agreement that the parents express of their children’s development. Nevertheless, it is proved that this influence is indirect but moderated by the co-parental relationship. The total of the obtained results allows us to propose new perspectives and leads for intervention

Texto completoThe aim of this study is to examine 'family policy' in the United Kingdom, in particular in the field of childcare, during the 18 years of Conservative rule from 1979 to 1997, and the first mandate of New Labour, and to answer two main questions : Why did childcare provision and nursery education remain the missing link of the Welfare State? Why is Britain lagging behind other European countries as regards measures enabling parents, in particular mothers, to reconcile work and domestic life? To answer these questions, it is necessary to first examine the historical, cultural, political and economie factors that have contributed to moulding policy in this field, before weighing up the consequences for women, men, children and society as a whole. Although the United Kingdom has never had an explicit 'family policy', many policy decisions have a direct affect on families, and the family is at the heart of the contradictions that prevent women from benefiting from their legal right to equality

Texto completoPrevious studies support the idea of a predictive association between preschool child-care services and some social behavioral trends at school age (shyness, social withdrawal and aggression). Those variations in social behaviors may also explain a greater susceptibility to negative social experiences, including victimization. The main purpose of this study is to examine, firstly, if there are predictive associations between child-care services features (i.e. its use, the intensity, the age at entry and the type) at preschool age and victimization at the beginning and at the end of elementary school and, secondly, if these associations are partly mediated by social behaviors. The data used in this study come from The Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD; N = 1 899). The use of child-care services was assessed by the mother's verbal report from 5 months to 5 years. Peer victimization was measured by questionnaires, completed by the child and the teacher, when the child is aged 6 to 12; the same goes for social behaviors, evaluated by the teacher only. According to a series of mediation analyses, the use of child-care services is indirectly associated with higher kindergarten victimization through social behaviors, but not at the end of elementary school. Intensity is associated indirectly with higher kindergarten victimization, but this association becomes direct by the end of elementary school. Early entry into child-care services predicts lower victimization only at the end of elementary school. The type of child-care services is more associated with kindergarten than end of elementary school victimization; attending center-based care and family-based child care indirectly predicts higher victimization, and individual child care by a family member directly predicts lower victimization. As expected, the results of this study support the social group adaptation hypothesis.

Texto completoAbstract : Background: Eating behaviours could be associated with weight gain during early childhood. Although a majority of preschoolers spend most of their active day-time hours in daycare centres, associations between their eating behaviours at daycare and their body composition have been limitedly studied. Further, research on eating behaviours of children mainly relies on parent-reported measures. The objective of this study was to develop an objective measure of eating behaviours and to use it to assess the relationship between these behaviours and body mass index and waist circumference among preschoolers. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 309 children aged 3 to 5 in 24 daycare centres. Eating behaviours were measured through weighted digital plate waste analysis. Data from this evaluation was used to create a food reluctance score and a food affinity score. Intraclass correlations (ICC) were used to determine the reliability of the new measure. Spearman correlations were used to compare the new measures with parental report of eating behaviours. Multivariate linear regressions were used to examine the relationship between objectively measured food behaviours and children’s waist circumference and age-adjusted body mass index (BMI). Results: The new measure of food reluctance demonstrated excellent inter-rater reliability (ICC= 0.970 to 0.998, p<0.0001), intra-rater reliability (ICC=0.975 to 0.998, p<0.0001), and good test-retest reliability (ICC=0.723, p<0.0001). It also provided evidence of concurrent validity through correlation with a validated subjective measure (rho= 0.534, p<0.0001). The new measure of food affinity was however not valid (rho= -0.182, p=0.2). The food reluctance score was positively associated with children’s age-adjusted BMI (adjusted bêta; 95% CI= 1.41, 0.15, 2.67), but not with their waist circumference (0.60; -0.86, 2.06). Conclusion: The objective measure of food reluctance demonstrated evidence of reliability and validity. Greater demonstration of food reluctance at the daycare center was associated with a lower BMI. This suggests that daycare centers could represent promising settings for integrating strategies to counter food reluctance and counter inadequate weight gain among affected preschoolers.

Texto completoThere is a consensus on the importance of supporting children’s language development while in early childhood education and care (ECEC). However, it appears that, despite a better knowledge of the best practices to support language development in ECEC, their use remains insufficient in many settings, hence the importance of focusing on the professional development of educators. The first objective of this doctoral project was therefore to design and implement a professional development initiative, attended, in this exploratory phase, by four early childhood educators in Quebec childcare centres (CPE) serving children from socioeconomically vulnerable backgrounds. The professional development initiative, spread over a three-month period, consisted of a three-hour training, six cointervention sessions with a speech-language pathology and educators, each followed by a feedback session, and periods of reinvestment in the educator’s daily life. The second objective of the thesis was to document the implementation of this initiative in order to understand the experience of educators during the professional development process. Finally, the third objective was to study the impact of the initiative, taking into account antecedents and moderating factors, on: (a) the new knowledge and skills mobilized by educators; and (b) their language development support practices. In line with these three objectives, a fourth objective is pursued, to describe the language development support practices used by the four educators. Three articles stemmed from the doctoral project and addressed each of these objectives. For the first article, a qualitative framework was used, which included thematic analyses of three semi-structured interviews with educators and of the feedback sessions between educators and the speech-language pathologist. Based on the educators’ experience, this article describes the issues related to their participation in the professional development initiative and their commitment to a process of transforming their practices to support language development of the children. In the second article, a single-case repeated-measure design was used to detail, for each educator, the evolution of their use of language development support practices during the process. Twelve video segments of interactions between the educator and the children in her group were analyzed, for each educator, using an observation grid, Grille d’observation des pratiques de soutien de la communication, du langage et de l’éveil à l’écrit (CLÉÉ). The results of this article showed changes in only two of the documented practices, namely emphasis on particular words and use of decontextualized language. Little change was observed over the course of the sessions in the frequency of use of the others practices by the four educators. Nevertheless, distinct patterns emerged in the use of the practices for each of them. These results allow to examine some explanations for these results and show the importance of continuing to develop ways to individualize professional development approaches. Using a mixed design, the third article integrated the quantitative and qualitative data collected into a professional development evaluation logic model developed by Coldwell and Simkins (2011). More specifically, this article analyzed the intermediate outcomes of the initiative, namely, educators’ reactions, new knowledge and skills mobilized, and perceived and observed changes in the use of language development support practices in their daily work with children. The results of this article show that the verbalized new knowledge includes a better understanding of the conditions that facilitate the use of language development support practices. The article also highlights some of the challenges inherent in actualizing practices in their daily lives, including the balance that must be sought between enriching and nurturing conversations and listening and pausing to provide opportunities for children to take the initiative in exchanges. The findings of this thesis as a whole make it possible to formulate recommendations, in terms of professional development modalities and objectives, that could be reinvested in future evaluation of such a professional development initiative. The results of the thesis also make it possible to integrate, in practice and research, new avenues for exploration and reflection on supporting language development in ECEC and professional development in this regard

Texto completoThe great permeability of the borders supports the mobility of the people and the development of the unions known as mixed. The organization of the parent-children ratios which proves already difficult when the separate parents are of the same nationality and of the same religion, becomes it more still within the framework of a mixed marriage, where each parent aspires so that the child is educated in accordance with a model which is clean for him. The protection of the family relations appears very important. Regarded as vulnerable, and unable juridically, the child profits from the protection of his parents by the means of the institution of the parental authority. The stake symbolic system of the attribution of the authority on the children in the event of separation of the couple, is worsened in the international field. Any decision causes passion reactions is of the relative who would not be titular custody charge, that is to say foreign jurisdictions which would refuse to recognize the decisions taken in a foreign country. These conflicts can then lead to an international child abduction. These illicit displacements constitute parental abuses of authority. They are carried out in obvious violation of the interests of the children. Private international law being insufficient, the solution must be elsewhere required in the international instruments. If on a side, the International Convention is the best tool to fight against the parental abduction, of another, it is n the other hand very delicate to handle. The complexity of the conventional network, the difficulties generated by their contents, the behaviour of the States, are still as many questions to approach

Texto completoThis thesis contains three econometric essays on child human capital and well-being. Each essay has a distinct methodology to meet the purpose. In the first chapter, we evaluate the long-term effects of a reform of universal child care in Canada on children's health, motor and social development, and behaviour. We show that the policy had negative effects on preschool children's well-being, but these effects tend to disappear as the child gets older. We find that this pattern persist even ten years after the implementation of the reform. The second chapter focuses on the effect of the intensity of child care on preschool children's cognitive development using propensity score matching with multivalued treatments. We show that the effects of child care are significantly heterogeneous and vary by family socioeconomic status, schooling or not of the child, the intensity of child care and the type of child care arrangement. The third chapter models mathematics trajectories of Canadian children aged 7 to 15 years and identifies risk factors during early childhood on the membership of these trajectories using Group-Based Trajectory Modeling (Nagin, 2005)

Texto completoThe aim of this research is to bring to light a struggle of representations concerning the place of the mother in the infancy professional sector. The first representation stands for a completely devoted mother, who then assumes the exclusive responsibility for her baby. The second representation figures both a hard-worker-citizen mother who shares her educational responsibility with the father and a social third party. The author pays particular attention to display this struggle as not being only present among professionals but also filling, between the lines, some speeches legitimated in the sector as a “knowledge”. As well as it underlies health centers plans of action for families in trouble. Nowadays, the second representation seems coherent with the social reality of work and with a democratic project, speaking in terms of sexual equality, of qualitative care of youngsters in our society and fight against social disparities. Nonetheless, it can’t be said today that this representation gained a real political legitimity nor theorical references which could hang enough together the two elements at stake: democratic equality between men and women as citizens and psychic health of the infants and their family. The author aims at going beyond some theorical and ideological theories in order to build up a political theory of infant education that could contribute to contest the legitimity of a social order which considers the female citizen as sole responsible for infants. Moreover, this insidious assignment reinforces, depending on social origin, some flagrant disparities in the way of parenting and exercising their citizenship

Texto completoAbstract : Background: Since children under the age of 5 spend approximately 29 hours per week in childcare centres and that they learn by observing and imitating others, childcare educators and peers can be important role models in promoting a healthy lifestyle. The objectives were to analyse the associations between 1) educators’ practices and the dietary intake, 2) physical activity (PA) of 3 to 5 year-old children in childcare centres, 3) peers’ behaviours, and children’s dietary intake, and 4) PA of three- to five-year-old children. Methods: Associations between childcare educator practices, and children’s dietary intake and PA were analysed by a cross-sectional study conducted among 723 three- to five-yearold children from 51 childcare centres in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick in the fall of 2013 and 2014. The associations between peers’ behaviours, and children’s dietary intake and PA were studied using a longitudinal design, conducted among 238 three- to five-yearold children at the beginning and at the end of the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years. Children’s PA was assessed using accelerometers, and dietary intake was measured using weighed plate waste method and digital photography. An environmental observation checklist was used to measure educators’ practices within the childcare centre. Multilevel linear regressions were used to answer all four of the study’s objectives. Results: Modeling is positively associated with children’s intake in sugar (p=0.026) and nutrition education is negatively associated with children’s intake in calories (p=0.026) and in fibre (p=0.044). Not using food rewards is negatively associated with children’s intake in fat (p=0.049). None of the practices are associated with children’s PA. The greater the difference between children’s intake or PA and those of their peers at the beginning of the year, the more likely they are to change their intakes and PA to become more similar to their peers 10 months later (p<0.05). Conclusions: Educators and peers can play an important role in the adoption of healthy eating behaviours and PA of three- to five-year-old children in childcare centres. The social environment is therefore important to consider in interventions which aim to promote healthy lifestyles in childcare centres.

Texto completoSocial changes in family matters, which are illustrated in particular by the growing development of diversified family configurations linked to the trajectories of marital separations and family recompositions, require more research on the drivers of these “new” family configurations, in particular in terms of coparenting. Coparenting involves at least two adults involved in the educational responsibility of one or more children. While much research has examined the issue of parent-child and step-parent-step-child relationships in the context of stepfamilies, few are interested in coparenting dynamics in this context Furthermore, the majority of studies examine the adults' point of view on the co-parenting relationship, neglecting the point of view of the children who experience it. However, this seems relevant to examine, because family reconstitution broadens the relational network within the family and leads to changes in the coparenting dynamic. Lastly, members of stepfamilies are likely to need support from professionals, but in France, support for coparenting is still often unthought of. In a psycho-social and developmental approach, this thesis is made up of three complementary objectives : - In order to be able to consider the children's point of view on the coparenting dynamic, the first objective is to create a tool allowing to examine their representations in the context of family reconstitution. - In order to better document the coparenting dynamic in family reconstitution, the second objective is to examine the point of view of adults (parents and step-parents) on the evolution of the coparenting dynamic and its issues, since marital separation to the process of family reconstitution, as well as the children's point of view on the coparenting dynamic. - In order to suggest ways of supporting coparenting, which is underdeveloped in France, the aim the third objective is to interview professionals who work with families, in order to identify the extent to which they take account of the coparenting dynamic. We interviewed members of 2 simple stepfamilies and 4 simple stepfamilies combined, i.e. one or both parents, their spouses and one to three children per family (22 participants in total). We also interviewed 11 professionals (psychologists, family mediator, marriage and family counsellor). In line with our working objectives, we took a qualitative approach to data collection by conducting individual semi-directive interviews. After transcription, we carried out a thematic content analysis (objective 2) and an analysis using analytical reasoning (objective 3). The tool created enables to understand the children’s representations of coparenting dynamics from the age of 5 years and 8 months to 12 years. It could be used in future research or clinical practice and extended to other family configurations. In addition, this research provides knowledge on the plural and singular trajectories of the coparental dynamic in family recomposition from the point of view of the coparents and children. Our results enable us to identify who are the coparents, the coparental dynamics at work, and the experiences of the parents, step-parents and children. For the majority of the professionals we met, coparenting is not a key area of support for stepfamilies, as their main tasks are primarily concerned with parenting in relation to the child's development. On the basis of these findings, we propose a number of avenues for future research and support for coparenting in families
