Texto completoThis thesis focuses on hybridity between virtual and corporeal mobility. We study the effects of growing connectivity on daily mobility, and especially on commuting. ‘Connected’ mobility is characterised by the large-scale diffusion of smartphones and the improvement of broadband connection in public transportation. ‘Connected’ mobility allows travellers to use a wider range of on-trip activities and to receive personalised information about their current or future trips. The main issue is to determine how public transportation users use ‘connected’ mobility to their advantage to soften daily time-space constraints. Three hypotheses led this research. The first is the hypothesis of the valorisation of travel time through the use of ICT devices such as smartphones. The second is about the reshaping of mobility time-space through connectivity, regarding the activities practised by travellers in their daily lives. The third concerns the better control of daily mobility allowed by the use of mobile apps that provide personalised information. The study is based on two surveys. The first occurred during the years 2013 and 2014. It is composed of in-depth semi-directive interviews. The second is a large-scale survey led by on-line questionnaires in 2015. The main results support the idea that the growing connectivity of mobility underlines a banalisation of mobility. The use of smartphones does not clearly imply a greater valorisation of travel time, but softens the negative effects on travel comfort due to the variations of travel conditions. Moreover, the growing connectivity of mobility time-space allows the travellers to import in this specific time-space their daily activities. Finally, the mobile apps providing personalised information about mobility authorise travel optimisation but also secure the daily trips, improving the feeling of control on mobility

Texto completoMetro systems are responsible for the commutes of several million people daily. Stations, as spaces designed for mobility, are transition zones. Their complexity (diverse configurations, train movements in different directions and rushed commuters), environments become somewhat confusing places for the visually impaired. Metro operating companies have been receiving requests from associations that represent the visually impaired people, demanding smartphone applications or the use of dedicated devices to aid them when using the network. However, existing legislation and standards don\'t provide requirements for such systems, and there is no consensus, among professionals or academics, for their design and usage. This research started by examining the ways found by the visually impaired to interact with space, assessing their abilities, limitations and worries, in consideration of their cognitive variables, within the Sao Paulo metro users. It has also assessed the practical use of a specific information/navigation system called Navmetro®, in use at the Porto (Portugal) metro. A multidisciplinary approach was used, by means of qualitative research and the use of data collection tools such as voluntary participant observation and interviews; simultaneously, a qualitative questionnaire was applied for data supplementation. Interviews focused on people with direct operational experience on the metro system, experts in station/train design, guidance and mobility teachers and, most importantly, frequent users. Data obtained in field work was cross-referenced with data found in the bibliographic sources, in order to attain results that may perhaps delineate design parameters for systems able to transmit information and navigational commands in real time. Through the use of sounds and vibrations, these systems can become a precious support for guidance in metro networks. This paper presents elements that can lead to the development and improvement of assistive technologies focusing on information and navigation systems for the visually impaired people, and also to the development of similar technologies in other transportation systems.

Texto completoThey key contribution of the first essay lies in the recognition that consideration must also be given to industry and occupation specific experience when studying returns to experience in the context of movements between wage and self-employment - otherwise the returns to other forms of experience will be biased. Using data from the U.S. National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I find that past occupational experience can, among the different forms of experience, best explain the hourly rate of pay for workers, especially among the self-employed.
Using data from the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, the second essay examines the employment prospects of the long-term unemployed (defined as being unemployed for at least a year) in Canada, in view of what is known from the research literature in Europe. Canada has a relatively low rate of long-term unemployment when compared to most European countries, but the proportion of long-term unemployed who remain unemployed for another year or more is surprisingly close to the high European levels. Examination of the factors affecting the chances of the long-term unemployed to obtain regular employment reveals, however, that several of the factors that hinder the chances of the long-term unemployed in Europe are not major obstacles, including age, gender and immigrant status. Low skill, on the other hand, does appear to be a major contributor to very long-term unemployment in Canada as elsewhere. The findings appear to support the view of Canada as belonging firmly with the 'liberal' welfare state and labour market regimes.
The final essay studies earnings distributions of recent immigrants to Canada in 1980 and 2000, as well as those of their native-born counterparts; moreover, I make a distinction between individuals in wage work and in self-employment. Using Canadian Census data, the essay studies two aspects -- immigrant/native-born earnings gaps, and earnings inequality within the immigrant and native-born populations. With regard to the observed growth in earnings gaps, I find that changes in observed characteristics and earnings structure effects were both responsible. With regard to the observed growth in earnings inequality, I find that residual inequality was largely responsible. But while this increase in residual inequality appears to reflect the effects of comprehensive skill biased technical change among the wage-employed, this is not the case among the self-employed.

Texto completoThis study proposes for organizations with intensive use of knowledge, a model that predicts the employees´ mobility intentions, which includes not only the perceptions that employees have of extrinsic and intrinsic rewards received, and perceived organizational support to human capital, but also introduces the opportunity cost of the employee, as moderator of the relationship between rewards and intention to leave the organization. The data used was collected from different public and private universities in Colombia. The global model allows to proof of the existence of negative correlations between the exogenous constructs and the endogenous construct, as well as knowing the opportunity cost moderation in relations between the rewards described and intention to leave the organization. Findings suggest that in organizations with intensive use of knowledge, the perceptions that knowledge employees have, are an important predictor of intention to withdraw, therefore these perceptions could be an important input for managers, so as to devise policies and plans that include and facilitate high performance and satisfaction for high performance

Texto completoThe unique characteristics of VANETs, such as high mobility, dynamic topology and frequent loss of connectivity, turn the network selection scheme into a complex problem. In a crowded wireless environment that surrounds us, mainly in urban areas, there is a proliferation and superposition of multiple networks and technologies. Therefore, in order to guarantee connectivity in a transparent way for users, the presence of a connection manager capable of taking informed decisions is crutial. With the increase of mobile traffic, several initiatives have been performed for deploying free/low-cost Wi-Fi hotspots across the cities, in order to offload traffic from the cellular networks into more cost-effective networks. On the one hand, clients benefit from lower data prices, and on the other hand, operators may reduce the amount of cellular infrastructure deployed. Furthermore, users will certainly prefer to connect to a free source of Internet whenever it is available instead of paying for it. Since nodes in VANETs are vehicles, the perception of the surrounding networks is constantly changing, becoming unstable with speed. Therefore, the high mobility of nodes in VANETs jeopardizes the existing network selection mechanisms, which for the network election, are based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) to choose where to connect. Moreover, in a VANET environment, there are no mechanisms capable of taking into account V2V communication according to the WAVE/DSRC technology. Thereby, we propose a connection manager which considers the Wi-Fi networks, cellular networks and the WAVE/DSRC technology to provide connectivity to vehicles. This connection manager is capable of looking into relevant data that is available in VANET-equipped vehicles, increasing the dynamic of the decision process. VCM is a connection manager optimized to operate in VANET scenarios, which takes into account the vehicle speed and heading, the infrastructure position along with their availability and also the number of hops to reach the service provider, besides the link quality. The proposed connection manager is based on an Analytical Hierarchic Process (AHP) that combines several candidate networks, geographic inputs and physical factors to determine the best connection at all times, including the technology and the best network, for each user. To determine the priority of each parameter, we proposed the combination of pairwise comparisons between the criteria involved, according to Saaty's pairwise comparison scale, enhancing the process through simulation and using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). To observe the enhancements provided by VCM, two typical connection managers were implemented: BCM which only looks to the signal quality to choose where to connect, and PCM which takes into account users preference besides the RSS. The evaluation was performed in a Manhattan grid, composed by several vehicles using SUMO's car-following model and with equal turn probabilities, and infrastructure randomly spread across the scenario. The results show that VCM outperforms the other two connection managers, proving that it is capable of operating in general scenarios minimizing the packet loss and with a reduced number of performed handovers.

In the past few years there hás been considerable debate over the question of mobility management in móbile cellular communication networks, due to the need of using the signaling system resources in a careful way. Among the strategies of location management, the utilization of registration areas has been difunded since the emergence of the second generation mobile communication systems, allowing to reduce the resource consumption due to location updates. Another concept, named paging areas, has also been extensively employed, allowing to save resources utilized localization of mobile terminals during the call setup for mobile stations. Initially, the Location Area Partitioning Problem (LAPP) is treated as a graph partitioning problem, largely recognized as NP-complete ([GARE 79], [LENG 90]) and leading to the utilization of heuristics, able to produce good sub-optimal solutions. The heuristics are proposed to solve the more usual case, where location areas are coincident with paging areas, and the frequency spectrum (radio resources). With the same methodology, another problem, named Inter- Switch Handover Minimization Problem (ISHMP), is adequately solved, being its relevance due to the elevated system resource consumption and to the severe delays imposed to users when their Mobile Switching Centers are changed. Thus, the diminution of the occurrence of such events id advantageous from both the user`s and the system`s points of view. The heuristics are eddentially the same for the two problems, and it is shown the superiority of the quality of the quality of the obtained solutions, when comparing them with other published results. The work also presents discussion about mobility models employed in the study of problems and techniques in the mobile communications area. Among such models, the fluid flow and the gravitational models are highlighted. A study concerning to the signaling load imposed to the fixed network (including queries and location update traffic over databases) and to the air interface is presented. Finally, starting from the average rate of mobile terminated calls and from a previously defined user impatience threshold, a new proposal for the definition of the optimal number of cells per paging area is presented.
