Texto completoSubwavelength scatterers made of dielectric or semiconductor materials such as silicon and possessing a large refractive index have recently emerged as a good platform to enhance light-matter interactions through the excitation of Mie resonances. In the scope of this thesis, we studied the interaction between light and high refractive index scatterers from both a theoretical and experimental point of view. In particular, we theoretically studied resonances of high-refractive index scatterers in the framework of the multipolar basis. We started by determining the conditions that maximize the scattering or absorption of light by particles. We then performed a theoretical study based on the eigen-modes of the optically resonant particles. In particular, we demonstrated that besides a resonant term, the scattered field has a non-resonant contribution. We finally combined theory with experiments to show that the Mie resonances permit to enhance the nonlinear effects, and in particular four-wave mixing, in silicon nanodisks

Texto completoThe aim of this thesis it to explore the potential of complex carbon impurities in silicon (G-centers) for applications in quantum technologies. This point defect was originally highlighted in carbon-rich Si samples undergoing high-energy electron irradiation followed by high temperature annealing. A key feature of G-centers is their infrared emission, matching the important optical telecommunications wavelength O-band spreading between 1260-1360 nm. Through my PhD work we have demonstrated that we are able to create individual G-centers by ion implantation in conventional silicon on insulator, isotopically purified 28Si on insulator, and embed these emitters in photonic nanostructures such as dielectric Mie resonators. We developed a low-resolution optical lithography and plasma etching method joined with solid state dewetting of monocrystalline, ultra-thin, silicon on insulator to form monocrystalline, atomically-smooth, Mie resonators in well-controlled and large, periodic arrays.By integrating light emitting G-centers within the Si-based antennas we engineered the light emission by tuning carbon dose, beam energy and islands size in order to optimize the coupling between the emitters and the Mie resonances in space and frequency. directional (Huygens-like) light emission at 120 K was demonstrated experimentally and confirmed by finite difference time domain simulations. We estimate that, with an optimal coupling of the G-centers emission with the resonant antennas, a collection efficiency of about 90% can be reached using a conventional objective lens

Texto completoMetamaterials are periodic sub wavelength composite structures how may have a negative permeability and / or a negative permittivity. If permittivity and permeability are negative simultaneously, we are in presence of what we called a negative index material, sometimes called “left hand media", capable of negative refraction. By controlling some of these properties, metamaterials allow us to obtained behavior nonexistent in nature. This opens the way to new applications. In this thesis, the use of dielectric materials is justified by the reduction of a major downside: losses. Thanks to the removal of ohmic losses specific to metallic materials. A thorough numerical study of dielectric resonators, basic components of "all-dielectric" metamaterials, was conducted using a finite element commercial software. This study highlighted, at the beginning of the terahertz range, a negative permeability, a negative permittivity and a negative index, for two special ceramics, well known in literature: SrTiO₃ and TiO₂. The parametric studies on these ceramics have allowed to put in clear the key role of the inter-modal coupling in order to obtain a negative index. We have also shown the unconventional nature of inter-modal coupling when the two modes concerned are different: one magnetic, other electric. There are in fact two different coupling regimes: a simple progressive shifting of both resonance modes, and then the apparition of degenerative regime, where both modes are at the same frequency for a long range, something not really common in the literature. In addition to this theoretical contribution, our parametric studies have proposed an alternative to the two resonators paradigm, showing the possibility to design a negative index metamaterial with a single bimodal cell in terahertz range

Texto completoRecently, metamaterial has attracted much attention due to unique property such as negative index. This thesis is devoted to various aspects of this field: left and right handed balanced structure, low loss, tunability and Mie resonance based metamaterial. An omega-like left and right handed balanced metamaterial was proposed following the guideline of equality of magnetic and electric plasma frequency. It is shown that this metamaterial exhibits a broad passband from 8.0 - 16.0 GHz with a transition frequency at 13.6 GHz between negative and positive index branches. Then, an omega-type left handed metamaterial (LHM) operating at millimeter wavelengths was fabricated. The left handed passband centered around 80 GHz was observed. The low insertion loss of -0.5 dB/cell may meet requirement of practical application. We studied tunable metamaterial based on nematic liquid crystal. Magnetically tunable split ring resonator shows a resonance dip shift of 300 MHz under external magnetic field. Then a tunable LHM was fabricated. Effective index variation of 0.25 arising from liquid crystal reorientation was found. Finally, we investigated Mie resonance based dielectric resonator and its related application. Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) cube exhibits isotropic magnetic resonance for tilted incidence. Besides, a thin layer of BST cubes can perform as an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) due to in-phase reflection around magnetic resonance. Such an AMC enhances directivity of antenna more than two times. In addition, a full dielectric cloak was also demonstrated numerically by radically positioning BST rectangular bricks

Texto completoThe control of light absorbance plays a fundamental role in today's photonic technologies. And the urge to design and develop flexible structures that can absorb electromagnetic waves is very growing these days. Usually, these absorbers relies on plasmonic resonances that arise in noble metals in the visible range. However, the extension of the plasmonic properties to the infrared and THz spectra requires adequate materials that have a metallic behavior at these frequencies. In this work, we study numerically and experimentally the metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures realized from highly doped semiconductor Si:InAsSb that has a metallic behavior in the infrared range. In the second, part we improved the efficiency of the MIM resonators by using hyperbolic metamaterials that also miniaturize the resonators. In the last part, we propose an ultra-thin universal design that overcomes the material barrier so that the total absorption can be achieved for different spectral ranges without changing the material
