Texto completoThe thesis presents a critical edition and commentary of three venetian plays of the late seventeenth century: Pantalone bullo (1688) by Giovanni Bonicelli ; Pantalone mercante fallito by Tommaso Mondini (1693 ; Pantalon spezier (1693) even by Bonicelli. These three texts of considerable importance in the venetian theater before Goldoni, in terms of the history of drama and history of the show, as valuable to the claims relating to the history of venetian language. At the center of them the character of Pantalone, which comes in three different characterizations, very distant from the stereotype of the Commedia dell'Arte. Outside easy and reductive evolutionary routes, these texts, on vaiorus degrees, connected to the genre of so-called commedia ridicolosa, show the investment of scenic ambience to more concrete terms, aimed at giving the public objective referents and well-known every day pattern, which show this production as a step of a considerable history, therefore unbroken in time, from the sixteenth production to the experience of Carlo Goldoni,in the venetian-town-comedy. The commentary that accompanies a text on the printed tradition rebuilt, reconstructed and reconsidered, is to highlight and analyze the structure of texts, giving depth study of the reasons which form the characteristics of greatest importance , and to offer linguistic analysis , such as contribution to the study of seventeenth-century venetian language, with particular reference to the tradition of the languages of the scene, which connect the experience to the sixteenth century by Carlo Goldoni , who in this production - with detachment and sufficiency , but with constant attention - could always find inspiration, especially in the years of his approach to the comic writing and the re-establishment of the genre of Venetian-town-comedy.

Texto completoThe thesis analyzes the impact of the Crusader ideal in the Venetian and Genoese context during the second half of the fourteenth century. The call for the Later Crusades seems an indicative case for delving into the mentality and situation of the merchant classes in the Mediterranean world. I investigated the human and psychological reactions to the “crisis”, analyzing the changes undergone by the idea of Crusade in objectives, participants and attraction: the Crusade no longer seemed to be capable of responding to the spiritual needs. The attitudes of Genoese and Venetians were then investigated, between attraction and indifference. It is analyzed the economic and naval contraction of the two centers, the changed sensitivity, the mental detachment from the East, the feeling of Turkish danger, the changes in religiosity and the anxiety perceived. Finally, I investigated the Eastern Mediterranean frontier and the real participation of Genoese and Venetians in the fourteenth-century Crusades, showing the pragmatic behavior of merchants. Genoese and Venetians did not seem to be only dedicated to profit and devoid of an idealistic drive: many private individuals participated in the Crusade expeditions. However, they were aware of the complexity of reality and were subjects to new difficulties.

Texto completoThis study was dedicated to the analysis and transcription of the correspondence from the ambassadors sent by the Duchy of Mantua to Republic of Venice during the reign of Ferdinando Gonzaga (1612-1626) and until the city was sacked in 1630. Approximately 13,000 letters, stored in nineteen envelopes in the Gonzaga Archive conserved in the State Archive of Mantua, were evaluated and over 700 were transcribed, following the criterion of artistic information (painting, sculpture and architecture), but without omitting news about literature, science and the market. The purpose of the study was to better define the configuration of the cultural and diplomatic relations between the two states during crucial years in the history of the Mantuan family. After a period of glory, it was slipping toward its inevitable decline with the defeat and sack of 1630 and the arrival of the Gonzaga Nevers from France. Duke Ferdinando was the key figure. His encyclopaedic culture is revealed by his acquisition in Venice of books on a great variety of subjects. The Duke was also very busy searching for funds to sustain his state from pawnbrokers in Venice and in Verona, in exchange for pawning the jewels and silverwares of his collection, but also from merchants who were operating in the city such as Bartolomeo and Grazioso Bontempelli, known as dal Calice. Bartolomeo dalla Nave, a well-known merchant and collector, proposed to the envoys to buy the works, while the Flemish intermediary, Daniel Nijs, is known for having sold the Gonzaga collection to king Charles I of England, the “best art deal” of the 17th century, which made London the European collectors’ exchange centre of gravity. The artistic episodes that appear in the correspondence, with their various intermediaries, ambassadors, artists, actors and envoys, concern construction of the Villa Favorita near Mantua, arrival of the Gonzaga family portraits in Venice, the activities of Domenico Fetti (the court painter) and of the engraver Justus Sadeler. The many voices that are entwined in the documents provide a detailed image of the relations between the Gonzaga family and the Venetian Republic, an indispensable ally amidst the fragile European equilibriums and, unquestionably, the clearing house for all news that arrived from other courts. Venice was also an inexhaustible mine of artists and works of art for the Gonzaga family, which for this reason negotiated the sale of their collection in the city on the lagoon.

Texto completoThe purpose of the research are the medicines and remedies (“secrets”) patented by Venetian Health authorities to 375 among physicians, apothecaries, grocers, practitioners etc. (except “charlatans”, already well explored) in sixteenth- to eighteenth-century Venice. In the first part we analyse the development of the regulatory framework from 1549 to 1798, dates of first and last licence for secrets. Development that highlights how the secrets manipulators are not exclusively charlatans, as most of the academic studies support, but they belong to various professional groups, defining them more and more minutely over the years. The manipulation of remedies and medicines is part of the care market, sharing a peculiar feature with the Venetian pharmacopoea: the lack of a binding pharmaceutical code, exciting a great deal of inventivness and above all a good tendency to chemical studies, usually avoided from the official pharmacopoeias. The central part of the research tries to reconstruct, to the extent permitted by sources, the socio-cultural background inducing the secrets manipulators to engage in naturalistic and chemical studies. We browse then a series of case studies along the XVI-XVIII centuries, concernig professionals and non professionals, inserting them in the local tradition of chemical, botanical and pharmaceutical tradition. The third part of the research is devoted to the last flowering of secrets, the late seventeenth-century one, when many features mature: the pursuit of therapeutical sweetness, together with a noninvasive therapeutical impact and the tendency to build large commercial networks. From the sixteenth century, among the manipulators of secrets, apothecaries are the most increasing group of professionals, facilitated by Health authorities that want to bring the care market back into the medicine shops. This is the twilight of the medicinal secrets: creativity of professionals and practitioners is shrinking day by day, while authorities are creating an increasingly widespread system of socio-cultural disciplining.
