Resumen
The uptake of circulating arginine vasopressin (AVP) by the pituitary gland (anterior lobe), pineal gland, and hypothalamus (ventromedial part) was investigated in an isolated in situ perused brain of anesthetized guinea pig. Kinetic experiments revealed saturable AVP uptake in all studied regions with Km values of 0.79, 0.19, and 0.76 microM and maximum velocity values of 22, 2.1, and 1.6 pmol.min-1.g-1 for the pituitary gland, pineal gland, and hypothalamus, respectively. The nonsaturable components (diffusion constants) were not significantly different from zero. Peptide fragments, L-phenylalanine, and Bestatin (an aminopeptidase inhibitor) did not interfere with AVP uptake. However, uptake of AVP was strongly inhibited in the presence of the V1 antagonist [1-(beta-mercapto-beta-beta-cyclopentamethylenepropionic acid), 2-(O-methyl)tyrosine]AVP at 2.7 microM, and regional Ki values, assuming that the observed inhibitions were purely competitive, ranged between 0.32 and 2.23 microM. The V2 agonist 1-desamino-8-D-AVP at 2.7 microM produced only a weak inhibition of AVP uptake, and regional Ki values ranged between 9.56 and 21.3 microM. It is concluded that specific uptake mechanisms in the hypothalamopituitary axis and pineal gland are sensitive enough to detect blood-borne AVP under the physiological hormonal state. It is suggested that AVP binding in situ is primarily related to V1 receptors, which may be involved in mediating the central effects of this circulating peptide.

Resumen
Radial velocities of bright IAU standards have been obtained photographically over the past decade using the long camera of the DAO 1.2 meter telescope's coudé spectrograph. Most of the stars observed have been found to be constant in velocity to better than 0.15 km/s over that interval. The mean velocities agree with the IAU velocities, on the average, within 0.10 km/s, although mean velocities of some individual stars differ considerably more than this from the IAU value. A preliminary determination of the zero point of the long camera system, and hence of the IAU system, has been made from observations of the asteroid Vesta, whose actual radial velocity has been calculated from its orbital elements.

Resumen
Abstract. Natural enhancements in the backscattered power of incoherent scatter radars up to 5 orders of magnitudes above the thermal backscatter are sometimes observed at high latitudes. Recently observations of enhancements in the backscattered power including a feature at zero Doppler shift have been reported. These enhancements are limited in altitude to tens of kilometers. The zero Doppler shift feature has been interpreted as a signature of electron density cavitation. Enhanced plasma lines during these observations have also been reported. We report on the first EISCAT UHF observations of enhanced backscattered radar power including a zero Doppler shift feature. The enhancements originated from two distinct and intermittent layers at about 200 km altitude. The altitude extent of the enhancements, observed during auroral high-energy electron precipitation, was < 2 km.

Resumen
The stellar radial velocity (RV) observations collected during the first eight years (1976–1984) of operation of the Fick Observatory photoelectric RV spectrometer have been tabulated for publication (Beavers and Eitter, 1986). Included are 16,000 observations of over 2,000 late-type stars. For these observations at the coudé focus of the 61 cm telescope the velocity zero-point is virtually the same as that for the early Lick radial velocity survey (Campbell and Moore, 1928), i.e. Lick-Fick = −0.08±0.08 km/sec. The zero-point comparison for DAO spectrometer measurements is DAO-Fick = −0.54±0.05 km/sec. During the last four years of this study the error of the “high quality dip” observations is ±0.8 km/sec. Thirty-three of these stars have been selected for use as future bright (m < 7.0) velocity standards at Fick Observatory.

Abstract This work is focused on transmission of 10 Gbps data and 60 GHz millimeter signal over 60 km optical fiber for 5 G applications. 5 G networks generally use millimeter range of frequencies. Radio over fiber is revolutionary technology to transmit radio signals over optical fiber. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of non-return to zero (NRZ) and return to zero (RZ) encoding schemes is also done. The results are reported in terms of Q-factor, bit error rate and eye diagrams. The reported results show the successful transmission of high speed 10 Gbps data and 60 GHz millimeter signal over 60 km optical fiber.

Resumen
AbstractIn Zimbabwe, odour-baited targets impregnated with deltamethrin were deployed at 4 km-2 in a 9 km-wide band as an invasion barrier against dense populations of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and G. pallidipes Austen. Tsetse populations across the barrier were monitored by a line of traps. Invasion pressure was estimated by the catches from two additional traps about 6 km into the invasion source. After 14 months all traps more than 7 km from the invasion source recorded zero catches for 12 consecutive months, indicating that the barrier was effective in preventing re-invasion, and that the 9 km-wide barrier gave a good margin of safety.

Resumen
Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are included in the group of promoted transport fuel alternatives for traditional fossil fuels in Europe. Both CNG and LPG fueled vehicles are believed to have low particle number and mass emissions. Here, we studied the solid particle number (SPN) emissions >4 nm, >10 nm and >23 nm of bi-fuel vehicles applying CNG, LPG and gasoline fuels in laboratory at 23 °C and sub-zero (−7 °C) ambient temperature conditions. The SPN23 emissions in CNG or LPG operation modality at 23 °C were below the regulated SPN23 limit of diesel and gasoline direct injection vehicles 1/km. Nevertheless, the limit was exceeded at sub-zero temperatures, when sub-23 nm particles were included, or when gasoline was used as a fuel. The key message of this study is that gas-fueled vehicles produced particles mainly <23 nm and the current methodology might not be appropriate. However, only in a few cases absolute SPN >10 nm emission levels exceeded 6 ×1011 1/km when >23 nm levels were below 6 ×1011 1/km. Setting a limit of 1 ×1011 1/km for >10 nm particles would also limit most of the >4 nm SPN levels below 6 ×1011 1/km.

The transportation of agro-alimentary products is constantly evolving. The research has been focusing on long distances, tied with the global market. But results in a lack of investigations in medium and short distances which also possess some efficiency gain. The investigation of these shorter mode of transport is paramount as they have significant impact on the triptych of sustainability. In this context, the concepts of "food miles" and of "km-zero" have spread widely among the consumers, attesting the community awareness regarding sustainability issues. However, as environmental concerns arise, such concept has showed it's limit. Therefore the question, "Can transportation of food become economically, socially and culturally sustainable, to preserve the ecosystem?", that lead to this concept, needs to be reassessed. Starting from a pedagogical standpoint, this question can be rephrased as “How can consumers, economical stakeholders and policy makers become environmentally friendly about transportation of food, to preserve the ecosystem?”. For a successful undertaking of such problematic, it is paramount to evaluate the need of novel training practises as well as the design of interdisciplinary research. A new formulation of such concept, embodied in "kmeter green", would aim to promote sustainable mobility on all the distances and chains' lengths.

Four general objectives of this research project. The first one, define the vision and values associate to Campagna Amica Farmer's Market. The second one, discover motivation that push the farmer to partecipate at Farmer's Market. The third one, identify the update role vested from the farmer between different capability, producer, artisan and merchant. The four one, understand the consumer's motivation for buying at Farmer's Market and detail the material and symbolic meaning associate to the farmer's product. The Campagna Amica Farmer's Market start in Italy in the last part of the 2008. The experimental goal is focus on S.W.O.T analysis, the strength and weakness that characterize the farmer's organization and enterprise, the opportunity and the threats that surround the Campagna Amica project.

AbstractFatal and Severe Injuries (FSI) to vulnerable road users is a major road safety problem internationally. Recent resolutions by the Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety called for a blanket 30 km/h speed limit in urban areas to address this problem. A project undertaken in Melbourne, Australia, set out to evaluate the effectiveness and benefits of a lower speed limit in a local residential area in the City of Yarra. The intervention comprised replacing 40 km/h speed limit signs in the treated area with 30 km/h signs with an adjacent untreated control area. A before and after study was employed with speed, resident surveys, and estimated safety benefits as measures of its success. Modest reductions in mean speed were observed in the after-phase of the study while benefits were impressive for vehicles travelling at higher speed levels where the risk of severe injury or death is greater. These findings represent an estimated 4% reduction in the risk of severe injury for pedestrians in the event of a collision. Questionnaire responses showed an increased degree of support for the 30 km/h speed limit in local streets in the trial area. The implication of these findings for road safety is discussed, along with the challenges and potential hurdles. Lower speed limits in local streets and municipalities is one important measure to help address vulnerable road users in residential local streets.

Resumen
Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are a progressive passive optical components, and used for temperature, strain, water level, humidity, etc. monitoring. FBG sensors network can be integrated into existing optical fiber network infrastructure and realized structural health monitoring of roads, bridges, buildings, etc. In this chapter, the FBG sensor network integration in a single-channel and multi-channel spectrum sliced wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (SS-WDM-PON) is presented and assessed. The operation of both the sensors and data transmission system, over a shared optical distribution network (ODN), is a challenging task and should be evaluated to provide stable, high-performance mixed systems in the future. Therefore, we have investigated the influence of FBG temperature sensors on 10 Gbit/s non-return-to-zero on–off keying (NRZ-OOK) modulated data channels optical transmission system. Results show that the crosstalk between both systems is negligible. The successful operation of both systems (with BER < 2 × 10−3 for communication system) can be achieved over ODN distances up to 40 km.

Resumen
Polluted by the noise of the observation, precision of satellite timing based on pseudoranges can merely reach tens of nanoseconds. Considering the sharply increasing demand of high-precision timing in the many fields, a traceable precise timing system has been proposed, which means having a connection with UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). We introduce the principle of the PPP (Precise Point Positioning) timing system and conduct the experiment with the form of zero baseline, long baseline, and very long baseline, simultaneously, CV (Common View) and AV (All in View) timing solution are used for comparison. Finally, the system performance has been evaluated from the aspects of precision and stability. The results show, when the Rubidium module is the frequency source of the user terminal, the 1 PPS timing accuracy of 904 km achieved by this method is 0.32 ns, and the frequency stability can achieve about 9.51e-13, 5.58e-13 and 1.37e-13 at the averaging time of 100 s, 1000 s and 10000 s. The timing bias is approximate 2 ns. Besides, the variation of the temperature will affect the timing results. Compared to the pseudorange timing solution, improvement on the PPP short term stability is more obvious than that of long term stability.

Mississippian sedimentary facies belts in east-central California, occurring primarily in the autochthon (lower plate) of the Last Chance Thrust, are consistently oriented in a northeast–southwest direction. The boundary of one belt is marked by the depositional limit of the Osagean to Meramecian Santa Rosa Hills Limestone; a second belt farther to the northwest is bordered by the erosional truncation of the Kinderhookian to Osagean Tin Mountain Limestone. Two additional facies belts, both in the Meramecian to Chesterian Kearsarge Formation, also are present in the area; one near Jackass Flats is marked by the presence of limestone and quartzite olistoliths, and the other in the Last Chance Range includes abundant chert–pebble conglomerates. These two facies of the Kearsarge Formation also occur to the southwest at and near Mazourka Canyon in the allochthon (upper plate) of the Last Chance Thrust. The great similarity and near alignment of these facies belts in both the allochthon and the autochthon can be explained by clockwise rotation of ~55° of the allochthon around a pivot point in the west-central Inyo Mountains. In this model, displacement on the Last Chance Thrust increases from zero at the pivot point to 75 km for rocks exposed in the northern White Mountains. Reconstruction of the paleogeography suggests that the Last Chance Thrust is not part of a major fold and thrust belt but is a major structure limited to a relatively small area along the continental margin where the leading edge of an allochthonous terrane (possibly the Northern Sierra Terrane) impinged against the North American plate.

Resumen
At some point in characterizing an enzymatic reaction mechanism, kinetic information is required. This may range from the evaluation of the substrate specificity through comparison of Michaelis-Menten kinetic parameters Km and Vm for various substrates to the elucidation of the complete kinetic mechanism and evaluation of rate constants for all the steps. In this chapter, we outline the theory and methods of enzyme kinetics and show for a few simple cases the mechanistic information that can be derived. The steady-state kinetic analysis of enzymatic reactions nearly always entails the measurement of initial rates as a function of varying concentrations of a substrate at a fixed enzyme concentration. An initial rate best represents enzyme activity because it is the rate at time zero, before any of the many factors that can decrease enzyme activity come into play. These factors include inhibition by products, changes in pH, denaturation of the enzyme and so forth. In chemical kinetics, a large fraction of the time course for the reaction is usually measured to obtain a large number of data points to determine the kinetic order of the reaction. No problems with denaturation and product inhibition complicate such measurements. In contrast, the progress curve for an enzymatic reaction is generally sensitive to the accumulation of products, which are inhibitory and have to be taken into account. Moreover, the activity of an enzyme sometimes changes because of instability or environmental factors. However, accurate and reproducible initial rates can generally be obtained. It is possible to follow the full course of an enzymatic reaction by measuring the progress curve, as in conventional chemical kinetics. By fitting the curves to the integrated rate equations the steady-state kinetic parameters for an enzyme can be obtained from a single progress curve (Duggleby, 1995). This method has a number of advantages in principle. In practice, however, the many complications mentioned earlier, especially enzyme stability under reaction condition, have led kineticists to favor the measurement of initial rates at varying substrate concentrations in steady-state kinetic analysis.

Resumen
The Danube Delta is the newest land formed by both transporting sediments brought by Danube River, which flows into the Black Sea and by traversing an inland region where water spreads and deposits sediments. Diurnal tidal action is low (only 8–9 cm), therefore the sediments would wash out into the water body faster than the river deposits it. However, a seasonal fluctuation of water level of 20 cm was observed in the Black Sea, contributing to alluvial landscape evolution in the Danube Delta. The Danube Delta is a very low flat plain, lying 0.52 m above Mean Black Sea Level with a general gradient of 0.006 m/km and only 20% of the delta area is below zero level. The main control on deposition, which is a combination of river, wind-generated waves, and tidal processes, depends on the strength of each one. The other two factors that play a major role are landscape position and the grain size distribution of the source sediment entering the delta from the river. The Danube Delta is a natural protected area in the South-Eastern part of Romania, declared a Biosphere Reserve through the UNESCO “Man and Biosphere” Programme. Water is a determining factor for all the human settlements in the Biosphere Reserve, the whole Danube Delta being structured by the three branches of the Danube (Chilia, Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe (Saint George)). Our case study is focused on the Sulina branch, also named Sulina Channel, which offers the shortest distance between the Black Sea (trough Sulina Port) and Tulcea (the most important city of the Danube Delta from economic, social and cultural points of view) for both fluvial and marine ships. The improvement of water resources management is the main topic of this chapter, in terms of water quality indicators, which will be presented in twenty-nine monitoring points, starting since a few years ago and updated to nowadays. During the study period, significant exceedances of the limit value were detected in case of nitrate-N (3.9–4.6 mg/L) at the confluence (CEATAL 2) with the Saint George branch and in the Sulina Channel after the Wastewaters Treatment Plant (WWTP) discharge area, as well as near two settlements, namely Gorgova and Maliuc. The higher concentrations of Nitrogen-based nutrients were caused by the leakage from the old sewage systems (where these exist) and the diffuse loads.

Resumen
Dispersion management is a well-established means for improving the performance of nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) data transmission for optical fiber communications [1]. In these systems, dispersion management is used to avoid four-photon mixing. Recent work has demonstrated that dispersion management in soliton transmission systems is also a promising technique for improving system performance [2] – [4]. By keeping the local dispersion high and the average dispersion low, it is possible to reduce timing jitter while having sufficient pulse energy to avoid amplitude errors. We report here for the first time that it is possible to stably transmit solitons using a dispersion map in which almost all of the fiber is in the normal regime but in which the average dispersion is anomalous. Stable transmission over 28,000 km at 8 Gbit/s was experimentally observed.
