Resumen
I am pleased to introduce this special issue of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling dedicated to mental health in primary care. Though the idea of incorporating mental health services into primary care is not new, there is a clear need to promote the transportability of counseling theories and culturally sensitive counseling practices to primary care settings. Clinical mental health counselors who are not aware of the importance of fostering meaningful collaborations and consultation with primary care physicians can garner useful information from the articles that appear in this special issue of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling. Knowledge acquired from this special issue about the dearth of quality mental health care for some patients seen in primary care settings may engender innovative solutions, both put forward by clinical mental health counselors and co-created with primary care physicians. I also hope that the articles in this special issue may stimulate future research and produce implications for treatment and services that can be piloted and evaluated for their sustainability, patient-centeredness, and cultural responsiveness to the long-standing clinical issue of ensuring effective mental health services in primary care settings.

Resumen
In various aspects of the counseling profession, instructors, supervisors, and colleagues often recommended that their fellow counselors engage in personal counseling for professional development and personal wellness. However, the existing literature has yet to explore the lived experiences of mental health counselors in personal counseling. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of mental health counselors in personal counseling. Purposeful sampling was used to select 7 licensed mental health counselors in a Northwestern state. Data collection methods included semistructured interviews in person and via Zoom, an online video conferencing format. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to code data and analyze data. The result was five themes (therapist approach, personal growth, essential wellness, the client chair, and continuing education) and two sub-themes under the therapist approach (positive approach and negative). This study’s findings provided insight into how mental health counselors experience personal counseling personally and professionally, which could influence future mental health counselors’ decision to enter into personal counseling. With increased knowledge and awareness of how other mental health counselors experience personal counseling, more mental health counselors may choose to engage in personal counseling. As more counselors engage in personal counseling, there is a likelihood of increased health and wellness in mental health counselors.

Resumen

As video games have become increasing popular, it becomes increasingly important for psychology researchers and practitioners to understand the impact that video game play has on the individuals who engage in it. Several reasons for play are identified, with the social aspects of play being the most common. The difficulties of developing a common definition for problematic play, as well as attempts to quantify those behaviors with assessments are reviewed, with the conclusion that no existing assessment accurately identifies problematic play without overestimation. The unsettled implications of problematic play, including the recent Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association Supreme Court case are explored. Finally, treatment methods for problematic play and implications for future research are discussed.

The current study expands on Charlton and Danforth’s (2007) study establishing “addiction” and “engagement” as distinct constructs. 2,092 participants were sorted into four different categories (low-engagement/low-problematic, low-engagement/high-problematic, high-engagement/low-problematic, and high-engagement/high-problematic), and their responses to the Mental Health Inventory (Veit & Ware, 1983) were compared. Participants in the high-problematic groups were found to have more negative mental health scores than participants in the low-problematic groups; specifically, their responses demonstrated lower scores on the Positive Affect and Life Satisfaction factors, while also showing higher scores on the Anxiety and Depression factors. Participants in the high-engagement groups demonstrated higher scores on the Loss of Control and Emotional Ties factors, even in the high-engagement/high-addiction group. Similarly, individuals in the low-engagement/low-problematic group demonstrated the lowest scores on the Loss of Control factor. The study continues with several implications for future research, practice, and advocacy.

Brooks, Andrea B. "The impact of group supervision on counseling self-efficacy of master's-level counseling interns". Thesis, Capella University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3610059.

Resumen

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of group supervision on counseling self-efficacy of master's-level counseling internship students. Larson's (1998a) Social Cognitive Model of Counselor Training (SCMCT) was used as the theoretical framework for the study. SCMCT addresses how counseling knowledge is transitioned to counseling action. The study was a quantitative, causal-comparative research design. The participants were 135 master's-level counseling internship students from a CACREP-accredited, private college in the southeast United States. Data was collected through the administration of online surveys: Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE; Larson et al., 1992), Group Supervision Impact Scale (GSIS; Getzelman, 2003), Supervisory Styles Inventory (SSI; Friedlander & Ward, 1984), and a demographics survey. Group supervisor impact (r = .227, p = .008), peer supervisee impact (r = .240, p = .004), and group supervision environment impact (r = .358, p < .001) were significantly correlated with counseling efficacy. Group supervision environment impact was the best predictor variable of counseling self-efficacy, b = .773, t(127) = 3.210, p = .002. There was no significant difference in counseling self-efficacy between participants with master's-level group supervisors and participants with doctorate-level group supervisors, t(133) = .586, p = .559. There was no significant difference in counseling self-efficacy between participants who had a group supervisor licensed in professional counseling and participants who had a group supervisor licensed in a different field, t(133) = .125, p = .901.

Resumen
Mental health in schools is a growing concern for many school counselors, educators and communities. School counselors are in key roles in the school setting to support students with mental health concerns. This research was done to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences, beliefs, and attitudes of school counselors supporting students with mental health diagnoses. This hermeneutic phenomenology research used n=4 participants school counselors and each has worked in their field for over 6 years. Additionally, each participant worked in the same school building for a minimum of 3 years or more. Semi structured interviews were used to collect the data. Key findings indicated that the participants all identified many of the same mental health diagnoses in their schools. There were five themes that emerged from the data: The themes included: (a) common mental health concerns, (b) desire for education/training, (c) outside resources for students with mental health concerns, (d) barriers to effective student support and (e) limited time to support students with mental health concerns. The results of this study may inform school counselor education programs, inform other school counselors of ways to support students with a mental illness, and begin conversations about mental health funding for schools.

Resumen
Evidence-based practice is often encouraged in most service delivery settings, yet a substantial body of research indicates that service providers often show resistance or limited adherence to such practices. Resistance to the uptake of evidence-based treatments and programs is well-documented in several fields, including nursing, dentistry, counseling, and other mental health services. This research brief discusses the reasons behind provider resistance, with a contextual focus on mental health service provision in school settings. Recommendations are to attend to resistance in the preplanning proposal stage, during early implementation training stages, and in cases in which insufficient adherence or low fidelity related to resistance leads to implementation failure. Directions for future research include not only attending to resistance but also moving toward client-centered approaches grounded in the evidence base.

Texto completo
Resumen
This research brief focuses on moral injury (MI) among formerly armed actors (FAAs), the cognitive and emotional response that may occur in a person who has witnessed, perpetrated, or failed to prevent acts that go against their moral or ethical beliefs. Unlike post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), MI is not widely recognised as a distinct clinical condition, yet it poses significant obstacles to the mental well-being and successful (re)integration of FAAs. The brief explores how morally injurious events challenge healthy self-perceptions and clash with societal expectations, leading to a severe cognitive dissonance in affected FAAs. It examines the impact of MI on military veterans and non-state armed actors, and highlights its potential psychological consequences such as social withdrawal, substance abuse, depression and violent behaviour. The research brief argues that MI deserves attention in psychosocial counseling within (re)integration programs for FAAs. It thus proposes a framework for integrating moral repair into existing FAA mental health treatment programmes, recognising the importance of addressing chronic and intrusive feelings of shame, guilt, and remorse resulting from MI.

Through online semi-structured interviews, counsellors shared how they delivered their services via distance/virtual means. Thematic analysis elicited findings on the successes and challenges reported. For successes, new learnings, wider reach of services through online platforms, involvement of faculty members in referrals, and mental health education were highlighted. Meanwhile, challenges included students discontinuing counselling, the stigma associated with seeking mental health support, and lack of manpower. The counsellors provided recommendations for improvement of services moving forward.

Resumen
Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to analyse the effectiveness of different non-pharmacological interventions on academic stress in university students. Eligibility criteria: Those articles that meet the following criteria will be included: 1) Papers that refer to the evaluation of the efficacy of an intervention on purely academic stress, assessed with a specific academic stress assessment instrument and not general or perceived stress; 2) Samples composed only of university students; 3) Empirical studies with pretest-posttest; 4) Studies published in English, Spanish and Portuguese; 5) Articles published in the last 10 years (since January 1, 2011). Registers will be excluded if: 1) they do not meet the inclusion criteria; 2) they do not clearly define the assessment instrument or the type of stress they assess; 3) studies that do not clearly specify the implementation of a prospective intervention (e.g. studies that analyse the relationship between academic stress and having ever sought counselling from a university counselling or mental health service); 4) grey literature.

Resumen
Development of the Student Wellbeing Connect (SWBC) service was a response to increased student support needs in the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Due to the government-imposed restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, students often faced complex psychosocial and wellbeing issues (Dodd et al., 2021). Two years on from its inception, the case management service has become a core component of La Trobe University’s Student Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion services responding to the complex and compounding factors that can impact the wellbeing and success of university students. Varying psychosocial needs can underly a student’s presentation to a counselling service; thus, the case management service complements the counsellor’s role by providing practical-based interventions. The focus of the service on practical issues has provided an alternative support model for students who do not identify as primarily requiring mental health or counselling support. This has opened service provision to a broader cohort of students. Using a multi-disciplinary, strength-based, and person-centred case management approach, students work collaboratively with Wellbeing Coordinators to identify internal and external supports to address their needs through psychosocial assessments and implementation of goal-focused planning. SWBC acts as a safety net within the university setting if/when psychosocial difficulties are impacting the student’s experience, academic performance, and wellbeing. This paper will outline the operational and service provision framework for providing case management to tertiary students.

Resumen
This Evidence Check reviewed effective psychosocial interventions for the management of people with alcohol and other drug issues. The review also aimed to identify the most effective psychosocial interventions for special population groups. A range of psychosocial interventions were examined, including behavioural, motivational, psychodynamic, counselling, mindfulness-based and self-help approaches. A number of psychosocial interventions are supported by the literature, especially for alcohol and tobacco use. The review found evidence to support the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing with and without Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for particular groups, including pregnant women, people with co-occurring mental health and alcohol and other drug issues, and people in the criminal justice system. The reviewers identified a number of gaps in the evidence base including the need for supports after treatment, research into substances other than alcohol and tobacco, and a need for a greater understanding of technology-based interventions.
