Resumen
Senior high school candidates’ performance in mensuration over the years has been reported by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) chief examiner to be very poor. This study investigated the effect of the “Think-Pair-Share” cooperative learning approach on students' academic performance in mensuration in two senior high schools in one municipality in the Northern Region of Ghana. This study’s objectives were to determine: i) the stage at which cooperative learning is most effective in student learning of mensuration ii) the effect of the cooperative learning on Senior High School (SHS) students’ academic performance in mensuration. A pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design of quasi-experiment was used in this study. The study’s sample was made up of two intact classes of 41 and 43 students for the control and experimental groups respectively. A form two class from each of the two senior high schools in the municipality was selected by simple random sampling technique. A test (Pre-test and post-test) in mensuration was used to collect data for the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that the pair stage of the “Think-Pair-Share” was more effective than the thinking stage. The study also revealed that the cooperative learning approach improved students’ academic performance in mensuration in the municipality. The study concluded that the “Think-Pair-Share” cooperative learning approach is an effective strategy for teaching mensuration and recommended the use of the strategy in teaching mensuration. Teachers should consider examining students in pairs as it is the most effective stage of the approach.

Resumen
Scientific and technological developments rely strongly on mathematical skills. However, mensuration is a challenging topic in school mathematics, leading to poor performance by many students. Various factors are responsible for the unsatisfactory performance, including inappropriate teaching methods where students passively absorb knowledge transmitted through reading and explanations of textbook contents. Thus, this study examined how a cooperative learning method affected students' performance in mensuration. A quasi-experimental research design was used in the study. The sample comprised two intact classes of 80 students assigned to experimental and control groups selected from one senior secondary school in Ogun State. Data were collected using an adopted standardised mensuration achievement test (MAT), which takes an analytical approach that includes problem-solving, geometric reasoning, formula application, and conceptual comprehension. The results showed a statistically significant difference between the mean score (M=11.18, SD=3.09) of students taught mensuration using the cooperative learning method and the mean score (M=7.66, SD=3.32) of students taught mensuration without using the learning method of teaching (t (78)=9.50, p=0.00). Also, the mean score varied statistically significantly (M=7.66, SD=2.63) of male students taught mensuration using the cooperative learning method and the mean score (M=8.73, SD=3.08) of female students taught mensuration without using the learning method of teaching (t (78) = 6.58, p=0.00). Therefore, cooperative learning in mathematics classrooms fosters students' ability to create and achieve learning objectives.

Resumen
In the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries rhythmic proportions were indicated through coloration, Italian note shapes, mensuration signs, and fractions. Even though Johannes de Muris had introduced in 1321 a division of the breve into from two to nine equal parts, theorists and composers used only those proportions which could be indicated by a combination of various mensuration signs with the assumption of breve equivalence: 3:2 shown by ○:⊂ or ⪽:⊂; 4:3 by ⊃:○ or ⊃:⪽; 9:4 by ⊙:⊂; 9:8 by ⊙:⊄; 2:1 by ⊂:⊄; 8:3 by ⊄:⪽. Other proportions were not used because musicians lacked adequate signs to indicate them. The invention of the fraction to show rhythmic proportions presented, therefore, a true innovation because it permitted the indication of proportions not naturally inherent in the mensural system. However, fractions were used until the late fifteenth century as if they were mensuration signs, that is, they were not cumulative and they determined the mensuration of the following section. It was not until the late fifteenth century that Johannes Tinctoris and Franchinus Gaffurius emancipated proportions from mensuration signs and used fractions in an arithmetically correct way.

Resumen
Johannes Ockeghem’s Missa Prolationum is a well-known specimen of fifteenth-century notational complexity. As it is notated in the Chigi Codex, it consists entirely of mensuration canons. However, the other complete manuscript copy of the piece, in the manuscript Vienna 11883, eschews this complexity in favor of resolved notations (resolutiones) with uniform mensurations. Reexamining these resolutiones in light of generic mensural norms, statistical analysis of the work’s metrical structure, and subtle notational correspondences between the two manuscript copies suggests that the resolved notations in the Vienna manuscript are the result of a productive, formalist music-analytic encounter between their creator and the Missa Prolationum. Seen in this light, these resolutiones offer a new perspective on the early reception of this music.

Resumen
I do not have access to the abstracts of the first meeting of EMSA but at this, the 50th Anniversary meeting of the Electron Microscopy Society of America, I have an excuse to consider the historical origins of the approaches we take to the use of electron microscopy for the characterisation of materials. I have myself been actively involved in the use of TEM for the characterisation of heterogeneities for little more than half of that period. My own view is that it was between the 3rd International Meeting at London, and the 1956 Stockholm meeting, the first of the European series , that the foundations of the approaches we now take to the characterisation of a material using the TEM were laid down. (This was 10 years before I took dynamical theory to be etched in stone.) It was at the 1956 meeting that Menter showed lattice resolution images of sodium faujasite and Hirsch, Home and Whelan showed images of dislocations in the XlVth session on “metallography and other industrial applications”. I have always incidentally been delighted by the way the latter authors misinterpreted astonishingly clear thickness fringes in a beaten (”) foil of Al as being contrast due to “large strains”, an error which they corrected with admirable rapidity as the theory developed. At the London meeting the research described covered a broad range of approaches, including many that are only now being rediscovered as worth further effort: however such is the power of “the image” to persuade that the above two papers set trends which influence, perhaps too strongly, the approaches we take now. Menter was clear that the way the planes in his image tended to be curved was associated with the imaging conditions rather than with lattice strains, and yet it now seems to be common practice to assume that the dots in an “atomic resolution image” can faithfully represent the variations in atomic spacing at a localised defect. Even when the more reasonable approach is taken of matching the image details with a computed simulation for an assumed model, the non-uniqueness of the interpreted fit seems to be rather rarely appreciated. Hirsch et al., on the other hand, made a point of using their images to get numerical data on characteristics of the specimen they examined, such as its dislocation density, which would not be expected to be influenced by uncertainties in the contrast. Nonetheless the trends were set with microscope manufacturers producing higher and higher resolution microscopes, while the blind faith of the users in the image produced as being a near directly interpretable representation of reality seems to have increased rather than been generally questioned. But if we want to test structural models we need numbers and it is the analogue to digital conversion of the information in the image which is required.

Resumen
This study took deeper look on how much the students applied problem solving skills learned from previous mathematics subject delivered through Anchored Instruction (AI) to other domains using pre-test - post-test Nonequivalent Control Group Design with English proficiency as moderator variable. The contents considered in AI were problems in Arithmetic, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. Results revealed that AI affected significantly better extent of transfer of the problem solving skills to General Chemistry but opposite results were found in Solid Mensuration while no significant difference in Analytic Geometry. English proficiency significantly moderated extent of transfer of problem solving skills to other domains like Solid Mensuration and General Chemistry. No interaction effect was found between English proficiency and teaching model. It is recommended that AI be considered as facilitator of transfer of problem solving skills in General Chemistry and enhancements can verify results in Solid Mensuration and Analytic Geometry.

Resumen
Abstract Even if stand inventories based on growth tables have been widely discussed over the last years, this method of forest mensuration is still widely applied due to favourable ratio between costs and achievable precision of stand growing stock estimation. The aim of the study was to verify the potential of airborne laser scanning data (ALS) for direct estimation of mean stand height and mean stand density (stocking) as fundamental inputs for forest mensuration based on yield tables. The material from two reference plots with substantially different stand structure was processed by REFLEX software, and confronted with the results of the precise terrestrial inventory. The number of detected tree tops decreased from 100% in the case of super-dominant trees to 30% and 5% in the case of supressed trees at the homogeneous and heterogeneous plot, respectively. The correlation of ALS heights with terrestrially measured heights was R = 0.88 at the homogenous plot, and R = 0.77 at the heterogeneous plot. The tendency to underestimate dominant and to overestimate suppressed trees was revealed at both plots, but was more pronounced at the heterogeneous one. Nevertheless we justified that the mean ALS height calculated from the heights of the detected trees represented the biometric mean stand height linked to the stem with the mean basal area quite well. The stocking estimated by REFLEX software according to delineated crowns´ area was also closer to the real value of stocking than the one obtained by the routine mensuration procedure. The results indicate promising potential of the ALS data processed by REFLEX software to rationalise forest mensuration based on yield tables in even-aged forest structures.

Resumen
This paper presents a systematic profile recognition and mensuration approach in machine vision. It can be utilized to recognize and measure the profiles of industrial parts in an automated manufacturing process by machine vision systems. A new method of profile representation by sampling the data from the object boundary in a digital image is presented. Autoregressive (AR) models are used to code the sampled data of the profiles into AR coefficients for profile recognition. Characterization of the profiles is accomplished by the Data Dependent Systems (DDS) methodology. The AR coefficients and characteristic roots help construct the AR and DDS descriptors to characterize the signatures of the profiles. The frequency domain information about the profiles can be extracted by DDS analysis. The measurement of the profile variation is obtained from the DDS results using optical mensuration method. Neural network and feature weighting method are utilized as reasoning machines for recognition. The illustrative examples in which the profile sampled data are corrupted by noise show that the profile recognition and mensuration approach is very effective and robust in a typical noisy environment on the shop floor.

The IUFRO classification criteria were applied to yellow birch stems in a lower pole stand located in the Saint-Zacharie experimental forest. Mensuration data were analyzed using the classification criteria. The results show that the stand in which yellow birch predominates has a relatively homogeneous diametrical and vertical structure. Social differentiation and some species hierarchy are evident even at this early stage. Mensuration data analyses reveal the discriminatory value of several IUFRO criteria (height class, development class, silvicultural class); other criteria (evolutive trend class, technological standard class) are more difficult to apply. The suggestion is made that two indices (ht/dbh ratio, crown clearance) would facilitate tree classification in young hardwood stands.

Resumen
This article argues that Bentham was committed to attempting to measure the outcomes of rules by calculating the values of the pains and pleasures to which they gave rise. That pleasure was preferable to pain, and greater pleasure to less, were, for Bentham, foundational premises of rationality, whilst to abjure calculation was to abjure rationality. However, Bentham knew that the experience of pleasure and pain, the ‘simple’ entities which provided his objective moral standard, was not only subjective, and only indirectly accessible to the legislator, but also typically dependent on a complex of socially mediated beliefs and attitudes. All moral reasoning involved a process of inference from contingent ‘facts’ which was littered with possibilities for error. The Bentham who emerges is a more vulpine hedgehog than is usually allowed, whose core insistence is that, despite its imperfections, consequentialist analysis and decision-making remains the only viable route to a rational morality.

Resumen
This study investigated the influence of class size on the students’ performance in mensuration in Ogbomoso Education Zone, Oyo State, Nigeria. The design of the study was ex-post-facto design. The target population in the geographical scope of this study is thirty- one thousand seven hundred and six (31,706) SS II students out of which a sample of two hundred and seventy four (274) students were selected using purposive sampling technique that form sample size for the study. Two research questions were asked to guide the study while two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Only one research instrument; Mathematics Performance Test on Mensuration (MPTM) was developed, validated by two experts in Mathematics Education and used to collect data for the study. The instrument yielded reliability coefficient of 0.85 using test retest method to ensure internal consistency of the instrument. Data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation and t-test. Findings from the study revealed that there was a significant difference in the mean performance scores of students taught in large class size and in small class size. There is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of SS II students taught Mensuration in the rural and urban areas based on class size. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that school principals and other stakeholders who are in charge of admission of students need to take into cognizance the resources available in the schools and the number of students to be given admission

Considering the concernment that the strategy area has about the environment and its impact on organization, this paper discuss about the environment mensuration. Its aim is build and validate scales of mensuration of the perceived dynamism, complexity and munificence dimensions. The scales were built on the revised theory, applied to a sample of 170 Brazilian hotel managers and validate under the factorial analysis with tests of reliability trough communalities, variance explained, Bartlet’s sphericity test, Cronbach’s Alpha, correlation analysis, and split half method. After the Varimax rotation, the constructs showed independent and orthogonal among them. The complexity construct was built by gaining information and environment understanding difficult, by information dispersion and by its unpredictability. Dynamism was validate as the variability in the components of the competitive environments, while the munificence construct reflect the availability of existing resources, the growing of the available resources, the existing of more opportunities than threats, and the growing of the market.

Resumen
The mathematics curriculum implementation depends largely on teachers’ choice of pedagogical skills that would influence meaningful teaching and learning. The suggestive ideal approach this paper presents is to consider exploration and demonstration of Akan (a tribe in Ghana, West Africa) ethnomathematics in the teaching and learning of some selected mensuration and geometrical concepts found in the secondary school curriculum. The study found various Akan ethnomathematical processes supporting the teaching and learning of school geometrical and mensuration topics such as artefacts, buildings, tools, and among others. The ethnomathematical processes reveal a resemblance of pi () concepts and its application to ethno-technology from selected artefacts used for pedagogical demonstrations. We recommend further research into the practical effect of ethnomathematics move in teaching other mathematical concepts in several communities where there exists cultural diversity. It is suggested that mathematics educators adopt ethnomathematics methodology by integrating it into the curriculum implementation process to check its impact on the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Resumen
Abstract Large-scale photo (LSP) mensurational procedures were developed, in part, to reduce field costs by replacing much of the ground sampling with less expensive photo measurements. The conventional LSP approach uses photo measurements of tree height and crown area, which serve as independent variables in models, to predict tree diameter or volume. This study compared 18 linear and nonlinear model forms for estimating tree diameters and assessed the use of a provincial taper model to estimate total tree volume from LSP data. On average, linear models produce R2, root mean square error, and mean bias values that were at least equivalent to, if not statistically better than, nonlinear models for the range of data evaluated. For lodgepole pine, white spruce and a composite of two deciduous species (trembling aspen and balsam poplar), total volume estimates were not statistically different from those estimated from field measurements. A comparative analysis of LSP and field sampling costs suggests the use of taper models in LSP mensuration could save considerable cost and effort in data collection and model development. This finding may result in an increased use of LSP in operational forest inventory work. North J. Appl. For. 18(4):110–118.

Resumen
Mensuration problems occurs due to the disturbance in blood discharge during mensuration cycle, effecting emotional, physical, and social well-being. This research focusses on the relationship among females with mensuration problems on the variables of social support, mental health issues (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress) and Quality of Life. Based on previous research, it is hypothesized that (1) Social support would have relationship with mental health problems and quality of life among females with menstruation problems. 2) Social support would have significant relationship with all sub-domains of quality of life among females with menstruation problems. 3). Social Support would have negative relationship with subdomains of DASS i.e., depression, anxiety, stress. A purposive sample of 206 female with menstruation problem from different private and government hospitals of Sialkot were selected. Their age was 13 to 40 years. Their minimum education level was at least middle. They belong to nuclear and joint family setup. A self-demographic sheet was administrated along with Multidimensional Scale of Social Support (Zimet, Dehlem, Zimet, and Farly, 1988), Quality of Life (John Flanagan, 1970), Depression Anxiety Stress (Lovibond, 1992). Findings revealed that social support has significant negative relationship with mental health problems, i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress (p<0.05, p<0.01). Further, social support has significant positive relationship with overall quality of life and all sub-domains of quality of life (p<0.05, p< 0.01). This research is helpful in promoting mental health and improving quality of life of female related to menstruation cycle in their life. Further, mental health practitioners and medical health practitioners can also incorporate strategies in their services that may enhance their well-being and mental health. Keywords: Menstruation problems, Quality of Life, Social Support, Stress, Anxiety, Depression.

"Akan ethnomathematics: Demonstrating its pedagogical action on the teaching and learning of mensuration and geometry". Journal of Mathematics and Science Teacher 3, n.º 2 (1 de julio de 2023): em042. http://dx.doi.org/10.29333/mathsciteacher/13281.

The study found various Akan ethnomathematical processes supporting the teaching and learning of school geometrical and mensuration topics such as artefacts, buildings, tools, and others. The ethnomathematical processes reveal a resemblance of <i>pi</i> (<i>π</i> ) concepts and its application to ethno-technology from selected artefacts used for pedagogical demonstrations.

Resumen
Under multicriteria situations, we define a power mensuration rule and its efficient extension by applying maximal-utilities among level (decision) vectors. We also adopt some axiomatic results to present the rationalities for these two rules. Based on the notions of reduced game and excess function respectively, we introduce different formulation and dynamic results for the efficient extension.

Resumen
A set of volume equations are presented, providing the merchantable timber volume for the principal tree species, present at the Spanish managed forests. These equations allow to replace felled sampled trees, for the mensuration, on standing trees of d.b.h., diameter at 4 m over stump and total height. From these data, local volume tables for management, can be obtained.

Resumen
This paper will address some of the current issues concerning the conduct of phase III clinical trials. The issues to be discussed fall into two areas – trial design and mensuration of target variable change. The former includes the determination of sample size; selection bias in sample populations due to particular inclusion and exclusion criteria; ensuring trials are randomised, double blind controlled studies; and designing the trial so that the two arms are balanced in every way possible, with especial reference to matching treatment variables. The mensuration of target variable change includes the selection of appropriate rating instruments which are (i) sensitive to target symptoms, (ii) have been adequately profiled psychometrically in a similar population, and (iii) are able to detect change within the time frame of the study. Instruments should be cross-culturally robust if used in multi-country studies and should have validated local versions where possible. Adequate training in the use of the rating instruments should be clearly reported and a clear description of inter-rater reliability assessment and maintenance should be provided. Brief mention will be made of the Cochrane collaboration and the role of evidence-based medicine in clinical trials.
