Texto completoMixing systems are usually difficult to understand, because there is a lack of knowledge concerning dynamic laws ruling these operations. Thus, nowadays, several tests are needed to predict properly the homogeneity of a powder mix. Throughout this PhD work, a method is developed to build predictive models for powder mixers and to bring out possible invariants for scale switching on these processes. Thus the stirring of powders is studied using different flow resistances within a 48L capacity Triaxe®, a convective planetary mixer. Rheological properties measurements are done at labscale (FT4 rheometer, volumenometer) for a better understanding of powder behavior at a wider mixer scale. A prototype blender has been built for this work. This polyvalent device, made of four blades and of a transparent vessel, allows to observe flow regimes and mechanisms, and to do rheological measurements. Two flow regimes have been identified (rolling, cataracting) and three flow mechanisms (convection, diffusion and avalanching). These mechanisms allowed to do stochastic modelling, for which parameters have been evaluated with experiments for free-flowing and cohesive powders

Texto completoUnderstanding powder flow behaviour during mechanical agitation is crucial for optimising mixing processes in industrial applications. This study introduces μ(I)-rheology, a novel rheological law developed to analyse powder rheology in dense flows within a laboratory mixing setup. The framework focuses on the interactions between paddles and the powder bed, addressing the challenges of measuring complex powder parameters such as the effective friction coefficient µeff. μ(I)-rheology, developed through dimensional analysis and shear band visualisation, demonstrates strong predictive capabilities across different powder configurations with similar particle shapes but varying sizes. The μ(I)-rheology framework proved applicable across various agitated system configurations and has laid the groundwork for initial scale-up studies that includes powder characteristics. Comparisons with Hatano's equation confirm the robustness of μ(I)-rheology, particularly for deep powder beds. Future improvements will focus on refining shear band width evaluation and reassessing normal stress assumptions to enhance model accuracy. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of powder dynamics in mixing systems and supports efficient scaling-up of industrial processes

Texto completoThis study focuses on the understanding of the dispersing and mixing mechanisms of helium in air in a semi-confined cavity. This phenomenon is an example of a low-density fluid injected in a high-density ambient fluid which results in a buoyant plume. This is an important safety issue for all hydrogen-based systems. A numerical model has been developed combining the appropriate boundary conditions with the conservation equations for the mixture mass, species mass, momentum and the state law of the mixture as well as the variation laws of the physical properties. First a laminar starting plume of a glycerol-water mixture is considered as a validation test-case by comparison with experimental data [Rogers & Morris 09]. The propagation of the axisymmetric buoyant-jet is modeled for large Grashof numbers and small injection Reynolds numbers. A good agreement has been found for the ascent velocity as well as the two types of head shape. A modified scaling law of the ascent velocity versus a modified Reynolds number is proposed to take into account for the kinetic viscosities of both fluids. For the helium-air mixture, a 2D planar air-filled cavity was first considered. The auto-similar scaling laws for steady plane plumes in unconfined environment [Gebhart et al. 88] have been reproduced for the vertical velocity and the density profiles along the vertical centerline, when considering moments before the plume impact on the top wall. Then a cylindrical container is considered to model the CEA experiment [Cariteau & Tkatschenko 12]. Numerical results are compared to experimental data and to a numerical benchmark. The effect of the axisymmetry assumption is evidence

Texto completoThis work is related to the study of thermal diffusion, or Soret effect, through numerical microscale simulations. This cross transport process couples mass flux and thermal gradient and is still largely misunderstood. For this study, we have applied a non equilibrium molecular dynamics algorithm on mixtures of Lennard-Jones spheres. At first we have tested the validity of our simulations. Then we have shown that the results allow us to estimate the thermal diffusion in these model fluids thanks to simple correlations on molecular parameters. This scheme has been successfully applied on ternary mixtures as well. Elsewhere, results in porous medium have shown that the influence of adsorption on thermal diffusion process is predominant compared to the one of the geometrical confinement, this influence being generally weak, except in the thinnest and in the most attractive slit pores

Texto completoIn the present work, the coupling between thermo-diffusion and convection in new thermal and geometrical configurations was studied in order to improve the thermo-gravitational separation of mixture components. The thermo-gravitational separation phenomenon has been essentially studied in vertical columns subjected to horizontal temperature gradient. It was shown in this study that it is possible to obtain an equivalent level of separation in the Rayleigh-Bénard configuration, in a horizontal cell subjected to a thermal gradient with a linear horizontal component and constant vertical component and in inclined thermo-gravitational cell. High frequency and small amplitude vibrations enabled us to increase the level of separation in the Rayleigh-Bénard configuration for a larger range of physical parameter variations. The analytical, numerical and experimental results are in good agreement
