Chapter III focuses on social research through content analysis of press articles about Tina Modotti, which were published by the Mexican newspaper Excélsior in January 1929. The purpose is to analyze the language employed in these accounts in order to uncover a possible bias behavior on the part of the press when covering Modotti's case.
Chapter IV deals with the analysis of Poniatowska's novel Tinísima through a postmodern perspective. The connecting theme between this and the former chapter is based on the insertion of articles from Excélsior that function as latent and manifest intertexts in the novel. The objective is to study these insertions in order to interpret Modotti's public and private images within this literary framework. Postmodernism is a pertinent theory since it examines the transgressions of widely accepted views to uncover or demystify reality.
Finally, the conclusion in Chapter V links the use of the media as an image breaker to the Mexican social and political context in the 1920s, and suggests political reasons behind Modotti's mistreatment by the press. In addition, the literary representation of Modotti in Tinísima and the analysis through postmodernism provides strong support to this conclusion and points at the role of this novel as an image maker.

Machine learning (ML) has increasingly been used to address the growing burden of mental illness and lack of access to quality mental health care. Recently such models have been applied to online data, such as social media postings to augment mental health screening. Despite the potential of these methods, online ML classifiers still perform poorly in multi-class settings. In this thesis, we propose the usage of novel document embeddings and mental health based user embeddings for triaged suicide risk screening. Machine learning to infer suicide risk and urgency is applied to a dataset of Reddit users in which the risk and urgency labels were derived from crowdsource consensus. We show that the document embedding approach outperforms count-based baselines and a method based on word importance, where important words were identified by domain experts. We examine interpretable features and methods that help to discern and explain risk labels. Finally, we find, using a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model, that users labeled at-risk for suicide post about different topics to the rest of Reddit than non-suicidal users.

Texto completoThis thesis sought to narrow some of the knowledge gaps in political communication and advertising. By examining the content of local newspapers about U.S. Senate candidates, this research determined female candidates receive just as much, if not more, newspaper coverage than male candidates. There were few endorsements given to candidates, especially from national and state office holders. Additionally, this thesis found that many of the newspaper articles were focused on non-issues. Previous studies on women in politics suggested female candidates often face more media hurdles than their male counterparts, specifically receiving less print media coverage. In contrast, this thesis found that women may no longer face the same barriers as they once did.

Since Pope Francis’ election, the mass media has focused heavily on his statements and actions. Previous literature attests to the notion that Pope Francis is unique among his predecessors when it comes to media coverage, primarily due to his propensity to make statements or moral recommendations that seemingly oppose or deviate from traditional Catholic values. This thesis explores the relationship between Pope Francis and the American mass media by analyzing 226 articles published by The New York Times within the first six years of his Papacy. The findings of this thesis point to notions related to the valence of Papal coverage, which began as primarily positive but have shifted in nature from the beginning of Francis’ Papacy. The findings of this thesis also point towards the religious nature of Papal coverage and also the potential for sexscandal coverage to shift representation of the Pope.
