Resumen
Matched weight polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters are currently available for use in total dust air sampling. This paper studies the utility of employing two superimposed filters in a cassette. Cassettes containing "paired" PVC filters were employed, in the same way matched weight filters would be used, during side by side sampling studies with cassettes housing single PVC filters, to determine whether the presence of two filters in a cassette presented problems during sampling. The effects of dust type, particle breakthrough, moisture concentration, and increased pressure drop from the addition of a second filter were studied. The presence of static electricity between filter pairs was also noted. Under recommended loading conditions "paired" filters seemed to perform as well as single filters in all aspects studied. Due to large filter weight variations found within individual batches of PVC filters, randomly selected filter pairs should not be used as actual matched weight filters.

Room acoustics is the science concerned to study the behavior of sound waves in enclosed rooms. The acoustic information of any room, the so called impulse response, is expressed in terms of the acoustic field as a function of space and time. In general terms, it is nearly impossible to find analytical impulse responses of real rooms. Therefore, in the recent years, the use of computers for solving this type of problems has emerged as a proper alternative to calculate the impulse responses.
In this Thesis we focus on the analysis of the wavebased methods in the timedomain. More concretely, we study in detail the main formulations of FiniteDifference methods, which have been used in many room acoustics applications, and the recently proposed Fourier PseudoSpectral methods. Both methods are based on the discrete formulations of the analytical equations that describe the sound phenomena in enclosed rooms.
This work contributes to the main aspects in the computation of impulse responses: the wave propagation, the source generation and the locallyreacting boundary conditions.

In this paper, some methods are proposed for the analysis of matched case-control proband data arising from familial aggregation studies. When there is no covariate information, we generalized the rank-sum test for clustered data (Datta & Satten, 2005) to detect familial aggregation. If there are some cavariate informations, we apply the generalized method of Liang & Pulver (1996) to analyze the cause of familial aggregation : genetic or environmental factors. We apply the proposed methods to obstructive sleep apnea pseudodata. Some simulation studies with finite sample demonstrate the usefulness of our approach.

Resumen
This thesis performs a quantitative study, derived from the Neyman-Pearson framework, on the robustness of the matched filter detector corrupted by zero mean, independent and identically distributed white Gaussian noise. The variance of the noise is assumed to be imperfectly known, but some knowledge about a nominal value is presumed. We utilized slope as a unit to quantify the robustness for different signal strengths, nominals, and sample sizes. Following to this, a weighting method is applied to the slope range of interest, the so called tolerable range, as to analyze the likelihood of these extreme slopes to occur. A ratio of the first and last quarter section of the tolerable range have been taken in order to obtain the likelihood ratio for the low slopes to occur. We finalized our analysis by developing a method that quantifies confidence as a measure of robustness. Both weighted and non-weighted procedures were applied over the tolerable range, where the weighted procedure puts greater emphasis on values near the nominal. The quantitative analysis results show the detector to be non-robust and deliver poor performance for low signal-to-noise ratios. For moderate signal strengths, the detector performs rather well if the nominal and sample size are chosen wisely. The detector has great performance and robustness for high signal-to-noise ratios. This even remains true when only a few samples are taken or when the practitioner is uncertain about the nominal chosen.

The preliminary work in genetic epidemiology is to determine whether a given disease shows familial aggregation. A typical design used for determination of familial aggregation should be the case-control family design which a case or a control proband is ascertained first, with subsequent recruitment of other members in the family. When some major confounders are difficult to measure, the matched case-control family is adopted. Although methods for analyzing familial data with a binary trait or unmatched design are well discussed, methods proposed for analysis of a quantitative trait with matched case-control family design get less attention. In this study, we apply the generalized estimating equation method (Liang & Pulver, 1996) and the weighted quantile regression analysis for clustered data (Wang & Zhao, 2008) to detect familial aggregation. We also apply the within-cluster resampling method of Hoffman et al., (2001) to fit linear regression model or quantile regression model to assess the familial aggregation. We assess the performance of the proposed methods through simulation studies and analysis of one dataset.

Resumen
AbstractThis article aims to validate the Leadership Daily Practice (LDP) log, an instrument for conducting research on leadership in schools. Using a combination of data sources—namely, a daily practice log, observations, and open-ended cognitive interviews—the authors evaluate the validity of the LDP log. Formal and informal leaders were asked to complete the LDP log for 2 weeks; observers shadowed a subsample of leaders in each school, 1 day per week. Using the three sources of data, the authors analyzed interview responses (specifically, the participants’ interpretations of the log); they matched log entries with observer recordings; and they compared (a) the characteristics of the social interactions that were entered into the log with (b) the overall sample of interactions that occurred while observers shadowed participants. The study shows that LDP log entries capture school leadership interactions as recorded by independent observers; it also demonstrates that study participants, with some exceptions, were not biased toward reporting certain types of interactions over others. Still, some log terminologies were problematic for participants, as was the limited sampling period of 2 weeks. The authors propose ways to (a) change the LDP log to reflect the concerns raised by participants in the cognitive interviews and (b) alter the sampling scheme to capture leadership around the school year. The LDP log is less costly and time-consuming than in-depth ethnographic studies, and it is an important tool for researchers who aim to collect data in schools, one that reaches beyond surveys.

Resumen
AbstractA coherent and effective remote sensing (RS) contribution to biodiversity monitoring requires careful consideration of scale in all its dimensions, including spatial, temporal, spectral, and angular, along with biodiversity at different levels of biological organization. Recent studies of the relationship between optical diversity (spectral diversity) and biodiversity reveal a scale dependence that can be influenced by the RS methods used, vegetation type, and degree and nature of disturbance. To better understand these issues, we call for multi-scale field campaigns that test the effect of sampling scale, vegetation type, and degree of disturbance on the ability to detect different kinds of biodiversity, along with the development of improved models that incorporate both physical and biological principles as well as ecological and evolutionary theory. One goal of these studies would be to more closely match instrumentation and sampling scales to biological definitions of biodiversity and so improve optical diversity (spectral diversity) as a proxy for biodiversity. The ultimate goal would be to design and implement a truly effective, “scale-aware” global biodiversity monitoring system employing RS methods. Such a system could improve our understanding of the distribution and functional importance of biodiversity and enhance our ability to manage ecosystems for resilience and sustainability in a changing world.

Resumen
This chapter addresses Case-control and case-cohort studies. In a Case-control study, one samples persons based on their disease outcome, so the fraction of diseased persons in a Case-control study is usually known (at least approximately) before data collection. In a cohort (follow-up) study, the relationship between some exposure and disease incidence is investigated by following the entire cohort and measuring the rate of occurrence of new cases in the different exposure groups. The follow-up records all persons who develop the disease during the study period. Implicit in this is that the relevant exposure information is available at all times for all persons under follow-up. The chapter then looks at the statistical model for the odds ratio, before differentiating between odds ratio and rate ratio. It also considers confounding and stratified sampling; individually matched studies; and nested Case-control studies.

Resumen
This article examines the impact of information security breaches on organizational performance. Until now, there have been only a few empirical academic studies that have investigated this issue and they have investigated information security breaches with the focus on the short-term impact on the market value of the firm. This study offers an alternate approach to investigate this issue as it explores the impact of breaches on financial performance of the firm, one year after the breach. Using a “matched sampling” methodology, we explored the impact of each type of breach (i.e., confidentiality, integrity, and availability) and also by IT intensity and size. Our results suggest that the direction of the impact (i.e., positive, negative) is dependent on the type of security breaches and also the impact of IT intensive firms is different from non-IT intensive firms. Our study also includes some important implications for managers and stock market investors.

Resumen
The technological innovation depends on learnability of the software used in terms of user interface design, program complexity of products that match the end user requirements, program complexity deals with commands used in the given ERP software, and training needs so that the ERP user can learn all required features and commands. Learnability signifies how quickly and comfortably a new user can begin efficient and error-free interaction. The main purpose of this chapter is to evaluate software learnability and performance of ERP software. Primary data was collected using survey through the use of questionnaires. Purposive sampling was used to collect data. The collected data focused on the software complexity, user interfaces analysis, ERP performance, challenges, efficiency, and training needs of ERP. Data analysis was done by inferential and descriptive statistics. The results indicated that there exists a positive and statistically significant relationship between the variables used.

Resumen
Surveys with samples selected from an address frame derived from US Postal Service sources are often referred to as address-based sampling (ABS) surveys. For an ABS survey that is primarily conducted by mail, web, or face-to-face, sometimes it is helpful to have a telephone number corresponding to the sample addresses for setting appointments or conducting nonresponse follow-up prompts. The usefulness of a telephone contact mode in a mixed mode ABS design depends on both the percentage of addresses for which telephone numbers can be appended (append rate or match rate) and the accuracy of the telephone numbers associated with addresses. Before planning a telephone contact as part of a mixed-mode study, the designer should know the likely effectiveness of the approach. This paper focuses primarily on append rate information, with a discussion of accuracy rates. For a single ABS frame, telephone match rates vary by geography, address type, match vendor, and by landline vs. cell telephone number. Using very large samples of addresses from a total US ABS frame, we estimated state and national telephone append rates from Marketing Systems Group's sources. The append rates are summarized here and interactively at the website http://abs.rti.org/atlas/.
