Resumen

Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems in Akron, Ohio, had shipped Sweden’s Air Force two full mission simulators as well as five multi-mission simulators by the end of 1999. A change of the simulator’s database for precision rather than speed and for tissue manipulation instead of aircraft tactics resulted in the development of Lockheed Martin’s endoscopic sinus surgery simulator. The virtual terrain thus became smaller—the human sinus instead of Northern Europe. Using an endoscopic sinus surgery simulator, doctors can practice a variety of complex nasal procedures and reduce the risk to patients. Using simulation technology originally designed for military applications, the simulator features a dummy named Martin and can simulate a broad range of situations, including the effects of medication on a patient. The simulator is designed to train nasal surgeons and ear, nose, and throat residents to evaluate new techniques, handle instruments more efficiently, and familiarize themselves with anatomy.

Resumen

Floodplain development, land-use, and flooding on the lower Ohio River are investigated with a 3100-year-long sediment archive from Avery Lake, a swale lake on the Black Bottom floodplain in southern Illinois, US. In all, 12 radiocarbon dates show that Avery Lake formed at 1130 BCE (3100 cal. yr BP), almost 3000 years later than previously thought, indicating that the Black Bottom floodplain is younger and more dynamic than previously estimated. Three subsequent periods of extensive land clearance were identified by changes in pollen composition, corresponding to Native American occupations before 1500 CE and the current Euro-American occupation beginning in the 18th century. Sedimentation rates prior to 1820 CE changed independently of land clearance events, suggesting natural as opposed to land-use controls. Comparison with high-resolution paleoclimate data from Martin Lake, IN, indicates that lower Ohio River flooding was frequent when cold-season precipitation originating from the Pacific/Arctic predominated when atmospheric circulation resembled positive Pacific North American (PNA) conditions and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) was in a positive mean state (1130 BCE to 350 CE and 1150–1820 CE). Conversely, Ohio River flooding was less frequent when warm-season precipitation from the Gulf of Mexico prevailed during negative PDO- and PNA-like mean states (350 and 1150 CE). This flood dynamic appears to have been fundamentally altered after 1820 CE. We suggest that extensive land clearance in the Ohio River watershed increased runoff and landscape erosion by reducing interception, infiltration, and evapotranspiration, thereby increasing flooding despite a shift to negative PDO- and PNA-like mean states. Predicted increases in average precipitation and extreme rainfall events across the mid-continental US are likely to perpetuate current trends toward more frequent flood events, because anthropogenic modifications have made the landscape less resilient to changing hydroclimatic conditions.

Resumen

This study examined the relationships between temperament characteristics and skill deficits in two groups of kindergarten children, one in Ohio and one in Taipei, Taiwan. The purposes of the study were to estimate the relationship between temperament and levels of skills manifested and to explore possible cross-cultural differences. Teachers and parents assessed children on the Barclay Early Childhood Assessment System to determine deficits in particular skill areas. Teachers also rated the same children on the Martin Temperament Assessment Battery. Pearson correlations between the two measurements were calculated separately for the two cultural groups. Almost half of the predictors of skill deficits were common to both groups. Children with high skill deficits from both cultures were more distractible, less sociable, more emotional, and likely to be male. This study suggests that there are close relationships between skill deficits in kindergarten children and certain temperament characteristics and that these relationships are quite similar across these two cultures.

Resumen

In 2000, circular water-soaked lesions typical of bacterial leaf spot were observed on leaves of collards (Brassica oleracea L. var. viridis) throughout commercial fields in northwest Ohio. Light brown, rectangular, water-soaked lesions were observed on turnip leaves (Brassica rapa L.). Bacterial streaming from lesions on both crops was observed microscopically. Cream colored, fluorescent colonies were isolated from diseased tissues on Pseudomonas F medium, and eight representative colonies (four from collards and four from turnip) were selected and purified. Fatty acid methyl ester analysis was performed on all of the isolates. Two from collards and two from turnip were identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola (mean similarity index = 0.82 [MIDI Inc., Newark, DE]). DNA extracts from pure cultures of the P. syringae pv. maculicola strains were used as template in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay with primers derived from the region of the coronatine gene cluster controlling synthesis of the coronafacic acid moiety found in P. syringae pv. tomato and P. syringae pv. maculicola (CorR and CorF2) (D. Cuppels, personal communication). DNA from P. syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 and P. syringae pv. maculicola strain 88–10 (2) served as positive controls, while water and DNA from Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria strain Xcv 767 were used as negative controls. The expected 0.65-kb PCR product was amplified from three of four strains (two from turnip and one from collards) and the positive control DNA, but not from the negative controls. Pathogenicity tests were performed twice on 6-week-old turnip (‘Forage Star’, ‘Turnip Topper’, ‘Turnip Alamo’, ‘Turnip 7’), collard (‘Champion’) and mustard (Brassica juncea L. ‘Southern Giant Curl’) seedlings using the three PCR-positive strains. Premisted seedlings were spray-inoculated separately with each of the three strains (2 × 108 CFU/ml, 5 ml per plant) and a water control. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at 20 ± 1°C. For both tests, all strains caused characteristic lesions on all of the crucifer cultivars within 5 days after inoculation; the control plants did not develop symptoms. To satisfy Koch's postulates, one of the turnip strains was reisolated from ‘Turnip Topper’ plants, and the collard strain was reisolated from ‘Champion’ plants. The three original and two reisolated strains induced a hypersensitive response in Mirabilis jalapa L. and Nicotiana tabacum L. var. xanthia plants 24 h after inoculation with a bacterial suspension (1 × 108 CFU/ml). The original and reisolated strains were compared using rep-PCR with the primer BOXA1R (1). The DNA fingerprints of the reisolated strains were identical to those of the original strains. Resumen

The issue of racial reconciliation has been a major concern for me since the days of my youth in Youngstown, Ohio. I was blessed to see the growth and development of African American people during the civil rights era. There were, however, racial tensions of a major magnitude during my days in junior high and high school. It was the first time we (students from Thorn Hill) had ever experienced racism because our elementary school was 99.8 percent black. I had to live in a whole new world when six primary grade schools were condensed into one junior high school. In high school, it became increasingly evident to me that there was a white world and a black world. Attending Howard University definitely heightened my anger and resentment towards white people. Howard was the Mecca of black power and intellectual thinking. By God's grace, after eight years in corporate America, I accepted my call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and realized that hatred had no place in the heart and mind of a servant of the Son of God. The seminary experience at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary was equally frustrating at times even though I had the blessings of the seminary's leadership, thus becoming the first Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellow. Through twenty-five years of pastoring and thirty years of spreading the Gospel, I have gained additional insights into how we must eradicate racism in our society. Through my position in the Progressive National Baptist Convention as National Chairperson for “Social Action on Public Policy,” I realize how difficult is the task at hand. Research and writings on “Racial Reconciliation” are my own convictions and struggles to support the Church of God in becoming all that Jesus Christ had intended for it to be.

Resumen

Two species of muskoxen have been found as fossils in Ohio's Pleistocene deposits, the extinct Symbos cavifrons and the extant Ovibos moschatus. Symbos currently is represented by six specimens, and Ovibos, by two; all specimens are brain-cases. One of the Ovibos was found in Hamilton County, Ohio, in Wisconsinan gravels associated with the Miami Sublobe of the Huron Lobe; this new record is the southernmost for the genus. All records of Symbos in Ohio are Late Pleistocene, suggesting that the genus expanded into the region shortly after deglaciation. Both records of Ovibos from the state are associated with the glacial margin.

Ice-sheet advance and retreat chronologies reflect climatic change in a manner that is difficult to decipher. Especially difficult is the placement of records into a chronologic sequence. Multiple age estimates obtained from three stratigraphic positions at a site in Ohio show that organics within deposits of the Miami sublobe, along the southern margin of the Laurentide ice sheet, may be up to 3000 years older than the age of the maximum Late Wisconsin extension of that sublobe. In addition, recent studies on organic accumulations above glacial drift provide bracketing ages for ice recession. When the existing radiometric ages for the Miami sublobe are interpreted with these new radiometric constraints, several fluctuations suggested by prior workers are unsupported. A simpler chronology for the Miami sublobe suggests that in late Wisconsin time the southern margin of the Laurentide ice sheet advanced through Ohio about 22 ka to its maximum extent at 19.7 and remained near there until 15 ka. This is in agreement with newly-refined stratigraphic histories of other Laurentide lobes.

In this paper, the demand elasticities and the size of price cost margin (PCM) ratios were investigated for private and national branded products using scanner data from a large supermarket chain in Ohio, USA. Demand elasticities and PCM ratios were measured for 32 national branded and 14 private label products for 9 food categories by using Almost Ideal Demand System. According to the results, lower-income shoppers were more prices sensitive than higher-income shoppers and the average price elasticities were ranged between –1.96 (Snacks) and –3.33 (ice-cream). According to the results, non-collusive case gave smaller PCM than the Bertrand case and the average PCM ratios ranged from 27% for ice cream to 54% for chips.

Stratigraphic studies of the glacial geology of the northwestern margin of the Allegheny Plateau of northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania include evidence for multiple pre-Wisconsinan glaciations. Near the former eastern margin of the Scioto lobe at Mount Gilead, Ohio, Millbrook, Gahanna, and Chesterville tills have an inferred Illinoian age based on thermoluminescence ages of 146 000 ± 25 000 and 124 000 ± 16 000 BP from an overlying silt interpreted as loess. Northampton Till overlies Millbrook Till of the Killbuck lobe and its correlative Mogadore Till of the Cuyahoga lobe, but does not overlie the correlative Titusville Till of the Grand River lobe. There are signficant differences in carbonate contents among these tills. Millbrook Till and its equivalents contain more kaolinite than other tills, and the Northampton Till contains more clay. Millbrook Till and its correlatives represent the most extensive Illinoian glaciation of the plateau, whereas the other Illinoian tills were deposited by ice that flowed a shorter distance onto the Allegheny Plateau. Butler, Mapledale, and Slippery Rock tills, formerly assigned to an Illinoian glaciation, are pre-Illinoian in age. Scarcity of materials for the dating and the lack of recognizable paleosols separating the tills from Wisconsinan deposits inhibits the reliability of the chronological classification of these tills.

A new species of percid, Crystallaria cincotta, is described from the Cumberland, Elk, Green, and Muskingum river drainages of the Ohio River basin, USA. It differs from populations of Crystallaria asprella of the Gulf Coast, lower Mississippi River, middle Mississippi River, upper Mississippi River, and Wabash River drainages by having a reduced number of cheek scale rows restricted to the post-orbital region, a falcate margin on the pelvic fins, a preorbital blotch distinctly separate from the anterior orbital rim, and a wide mouth gape. The Elk River population is also divergent genetically from populations of the Gulf Coast, lower Mississippi River, and upper Mississippi River drainages. Crystallaria cincotta, discovered in the Elk River of the Ohio River drainage in 1980, is a rare species with the only extant population represented by 12 individuals collected from 1980–2005 from the lower 36 km section of the Elk River, West Virginia.

This paper examines the temporal distribution of 163 distinct species recovered from 21 well-dated Holocene age archaeological sites in the Ohio River valley to determine patterns of faunal resource procurement and their response to periods of climate change. Climate change proxies include bison, long-billed curlew, pine marten, porcupine, prairie vole, and swamp rabbit. While the rice rat may be a proxy of climate change, its initial appearance in the Archaic cultural period co-occurs with storable starchy and oily seed crops such as erect knotweed, little barley, marsh elder, maygrass, and sunflower. Subsistence proxies that transcend climate change include variety of aquatic (bass/sunfish, buffalo, channel catfish, freshwater drum, gar, mussels, snails, snapping and spiny softshell turtles, and river redhorse sucker), avian (blue-wing teal, Canada goose, and turkey), and terrestrial species (dog, eastern cotton-tail, elk, gray and fox squirrels, opossum, raccoon, timber rattlesnake, and woodchuck). Caldwell’s Primary Forest Efficiency remains a valid theoretical model of Holocene subsistence strategy in the Ohio River valley.

Resumen

The Upper Olentangy Shale of Ohio, a green pyritic shale interbedded with thin dark gray shale beds, disconformably overlies the lithologically similar Middle Devonian Lower Olentangy Shale. The muds were deposited in a quiet offshore environment on the distal margin of the Appalachian Basin during the Late Frasnian through Early Famennian. The Upper Olentangy Shale contains abundant and diverse conodonts of MN Zone 13 and the Middle triangularis Zone. The Frasnian-Famennian boundary is 4-8 cm below the base of the Huron Shale at the Olentangy Shale type section in Delaware, Ohio. The boundary interval is a green shale containing a mixed highest Frasnian (e.g., Palmatolepis bogartensis, P. linguiformis) and lowest Famennian (e.g., P. delicatula, P. subperlobata, P. triangularis) conodont fauna. An ash horizon, pyritic bed, finely laminated dark shale, and a thin green-blue shale comprise the upper 3 cm of the Olentangy, and contain a conodont fauna indicative of the Middle triangularis Zone.

Resumen

Glacial-age Lake Tight was first mapped by John F. Wolfe in 1942. Wolfe compiled his map from photographs of 50 USGS topographic maps, and used the 900-foot contour to delineate its shoreline. An estimate, as reported by Hansen in 1987, suggested an area of approximately 18,130 km2 (7,000 mi2) for the lake. Using a geographic information system (GIS) environment, an updated map of Lake Tight was developed employing the 275-meter (902-foot) elevation contour. Calculations now suggest the area of Lake Tight was 43 percent larger or approximately 26,000 km2 (10,040 mi2) and the volume approximately 1,120 km3 (268 mi3). The reconstruction of Lake Tight in a GIS creates a spatial analysis platform that can support research on the origin and development of the lake, the geologic processes that occurred as a consequence of the advance of the pre-Illinoian ice, and the origin of the Ohio River. The development of the upper Ohio Valley during the Quaternary Period remains one of the outstanding problems in North American geology. The details of the transition from the Teays River to Lake Tight, and from Lake Tight to the Ohio River, are poorly understood despite more than 100-years passing since the first significant study of those changes. A refined understanding of the area and depth of Lake Tight is essential but is complicated by fundamental unknowns—such as the location of the pre-Illinoian ice margin and the extent and consequence of isostatic flexure of the lithosphere due to ice-loading and lake-loading. Given the assumptions required for the model, the accuracy of both the raster data and the 1942 topographic maps, and the paucity of essential field data, mapping the lake shoreline at the widely cited 274.32-meter (900-foot) contour would not provide increased verifiable accuracy.

AbstractThis paper contributes to the debate on whether pre-harvest pricing strategies can improve returns over cash sales at harvest. It also examines cash flow needs of such strategies. The analysis is conducted for Ohio corn produced from 1986 through 1999. The pre-harvest strategies evaluated (short futures, long put, synthetic long put, put-call fence) did not statistically improve returns over cash sales at harvest. However, if implemented during or before planting, these naïve strategies reduced the standard deviation of annual gross income. Substantial cash flow may be incurred, either to establish the strategy or meet margin calls. Therefore, assessments of pre-harvest pricing strategies should include cash flow needs, along with return and risk.

IntroductionThe Oxford Happiness Inventory (OHI) 29-Item, each involving the selection of four options that are different for each item. Although there is an Arabic version, it is not identical to the original version in terms of the number of items and response.Objectivesto evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic adaptation OHI and its factorial structure in undergraduate sample.MethodsThe participants were 720 first year undergraduate Kuwaitis: 360 males mean age = 20.38 ± 1.60 and 360 females; mean age = 19.71 ± 1.39 (t = 5.87, P < 0.001). The Arabic version of OHI (Argyle, Martin, & Crossland) was administered to participants. The internal consistency reliability, factor structure, and convergent validity of the OHI with Life Orientation Test (LOT-R, Adult Hope Scale (AHS), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) were assessed as well as divergent validity of the OHI with Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II)ResultsInternal consistency was satisfactory for the OHI (Cronbach's alpha = 0.87) for males and (Cronbach's alpha = 0.86) for females. The results revealed no significant gender differences on happiness (F = 1.77, P > 05). Principal component analyses (PCA) showed that a seven-component solution explains %50.50 of the total variance for males and 51.47% for females. The OHI positively correlates with the following variables: SWLS (r = .52), LOT-R (r = 0.56) AHS (r = .48) while the OHI correlates negatively with BDI-II (r = -54).ConclusionsFindings confirm that the OHI provides satisfactory validation, and thus it can be recommended as a measure of happiness among Arab samples.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract The eastern margin of North America has undergone multiple episodes of orogenesis and rifting, yielding the surface geology and topography visible today. It is poorly known how the crust and mantle lithosphere have responded to these tectonic forces, and how geologic units preserved at the surface related to deeper structures. The eastern North American margin has undergone significant postrift evolution since the breakup of Pangea, as evidenced by the presence of young (Eocene) volcanic rocks in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia and by the apparently recent rejuvenation of Appalachian topography. The drivers of this postrift evolution, and the precise mechanisms through which relatively recent processes have modified the structure of the margin, remain poorly understood. The Mid-Atlantic Geophysical Integrative Collaboration (MAGIC) experiment, part of the EarthScope USArray Flexible Array, consisted of collocated, dense, linear arrays of broadband seismic and magnetotelluric (MT) stations (25–28 instruments of each type) across the central Appalachian Mountains, through the U.S. states of Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. The goals of the MAGIC deployment were to characterize the seismic and electrical conductivity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the central Appalachians using natural-source seismic and MT imaging methods. The MAGIC stations operated between 2013 and 2016, and the data are publicly available via the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology Data Management Center.

AbstractDetailed analysis of a site near Cincinnati, Ohio, shows that 14C ages of samples in a single geologic unit can have a range of several thousand years and ages from different stratigraphic units can overlap. At the Sharonville site, four 14C samples from organic silt below glaciogenic deposits have an inverted chronologic sequence, suggesting contamination, but nevertheless they indicate the silt was deposited before 27,000 yr B.P. A stump cluster in growth position, wood fragments, and moss from the upper surface of the silt may differ by as much as 2300 14C yr. Five ages from the stump cluster constrain the timing of a glacier advance of the Laurentide ice sheet to its southern limit in the Cincinnati area at 19,670 ± 68 yr B.P. Overlying glaciogenic sediments contain transported wood that may be as much as 3200 yr older than the advance. This range of ages points out that, for a given site, several age measurements are required to determine when a glacier advance occurred. Because the measured ages in this study span the entire interval suggested for a twofold sequence of advance, retreat, and readvance of the margin of the Miami sublobe, we suggest a single advance to its terminal position in the Cincinnati area as an alternate hypothesis for testing.

Stromatoporoids from the Brassfield Formation (Early Silurian, Llandovery) near Fairborn, Ohio, provided substrata for a diverse epizoic community. The stromatoporoids were colonized by at least 28 taxa, including bryozoans, cnidarians, echinoderms, annelids, and endolithic organisms. Analysis of the occurrence, diversity, distribution, and coverage of the epizoans recognized patterns of site-selective attachment on the surface of the stromatoporoids.The upper surface of the stromatoporoids had a slightly higher total epizoan coverage than the lower surface. Concentric zones outlined from the margin also had differences in area and percent coverage. On the upper and lower surfaces, epizoan occurrence decreased from the margin to the interior. Epizoan coverage for the lower surface also decreased inward. On the upper surface, the middle zone had the highest coverage followed by the outer and polar zones, respectively. Among the major invertebrate phyla, only the echinoderms were randomly distributed. Bryozoans, cnidarians, and miscellaneous taxa including borers, cornulitids, and spirorbids were distributed nonrandomly on the surface of the stromatoporoids.Over 95 percent of the stromatoporoid area analyzed is not covered by epizoans. However, epizoans are commonly clumped or in direct contact with one another. These physical interactions are the result of site-selective attachment by epizoans in close proximity rather than competition for available space.

During August 2003, we conducted a statewide survey of rhododendrons to determine if Phytophthora ramorum was present in Ohio ornamental nurseries. In total, 240 samples were randomly collected in 12 nurseries throughout Ohio from rhododendrons showing foliar necrotic lesions and twig dieback symptoms. The samples yielded 51 Phytophthora spp. isolates on PARP-V8 agar. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of all isolates was amplified using the universal primers ITS1 and ITS4 and was sequenced. Consensus sequences from sense and antisense were then blasted against the GenBank database, allowing for the identification to species of ˜80% of all isolates. These identifications, and the ˜20% unknowns, were confirmed using blind morphological tests on the basis of the following parameters: colony morphology; shape and dimensions of sporangia and type of papillae; dimensions of oogonia and oospores; type and position of antheridia; presence or absence of chlamydospores; presence or absence and morphology of hyphal swellings; and growth rate at 35°C according to the Revisited Tabular Key of the species of Phytophthora (1). No P. ramorum was detected among the isolates; however, P. cactorum, P. citricola, P. citrophthora, and P. nicotianae were detected. We also found two occurrences of P. inflata Caros & Tucker and one of P. insolita Ann & Ko. (P. inflata: e-value ≤e-179, identities ≥95%; P. insolita: e-value = 0.0; identities = 95%.) P. inflata was isolated from two tissue types, a dead twig and a necrotic leaf tip. P. insolita was isolated from a necrotic leaf tip. Identity of the two species was confirmed morphologically using the parameters listed above as well as the following measurements (N = 40; all in μm) (1): P. inflata - sporangia: 40 × 24 ([24 to 68] × [18 to 34]); oogonia: 34.6 (28 to 40); oospores: 30.8 (25 to 38); P. insolita - sporangia: 42 × 28 ([34 to 56] × [22 to 38]); oogonia: 32 (26 to 36); oospores: 26 (22 to 30). Koch's postulates were satisfied by inoculating two rhododendron plants (cvs. PJM and Nova Zembla) with the putative pathogens. On each plant, each of three leaves was pierced with a dissecting needle and was inoculated by placing a 0.5-cm-diameter plug of mycelium that was taken from the margin of a colony actively growing on PARP-V8 agar on the wound. The inoculum was retained using clear adhesive tape. A similar procedure was used for twigs. Controls consisted of inoculations with sterile PARP-V8 agar medium. Both cultures of P. inflata and P. insolita produced necrotic lesions in all inoculations on both tissue types within 1 week, and they were reisolated from the margins of lesions on PARP-V8. The lesion margin was at least 2 cm away from the inoculum plug in leaf inoculations and several centimeters in twig inoculations. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. inflata and P. insolita occurring on rhododendron and the first time P. insolita has been reported outside of Southeast Asia where it has been recovered only from soil. Crinoids were first reported from the Cuyahoga Formation in northeastern Ohio by James Hall in 1863. However, these crinoids have not been re-examined in detail since the late nineteenth century. With the restudy of classical and more recent collections, ten (nine camerate and one disparid) species-level taxa are recognized from the late Kinderhookian Meadville Shale Member, Cuyahoga Formation, including the camerates Amphoracrinus viminalis (Hall, 1863); Aorocrinus helice Hall, 1863; Aorocrinus meyeri n. sp.; Aryballocrinus martini n. sp.; Cusacrinus daphne (Hall, 1863); Platycrinites s.l. contritus (Hall, 1863); Platycrinites s.l. graphicus (Hall, 1863); Platycrinites s.l. lodensis (Hall and Whitfield, 1875); and Platycrinites s.l. burkei n. sp. In addition, Halysiocrinus sp. is the first disparid reported from this fauna. Platycrinites s.l. bedfordensis (Hall and Whitfield, 1875) is designated a nomen dubium. Growth is evaluated for Aorocrinus helice and Cusacrinus daphne, which had contrasting development. The growth of the Aorocrinus helice calyx was largely not allometric but that of the primaxil plate was, suggesting the arms may have grown allometrically. In contrast, much of the calyx of Cusacrinus daphne displayed allometric growth.

Facies and carbon isotope analysis of a series of four drill cores from Cincinnati, Ohio provide an opportunity to assess Late Ordovician paleoenvironmental variability along the margin of the Sebree Trough, an intracratonic basin associated with Taconian far-field tectonics. The cores provide stratigraphic data for an approximately 50km long NE-SW transect that roughly parallels the margin of the trough. The cores span the upper High Bridge Group through much of the equivalents of the Lexington Formation, and in one case into the overlying Cincinnatian strata (Kope). The cores were logged at centimeter-scale for litho-, bio-, and tapho-facies.Anumber of marker beds that are present in the cores, including K-bentonites, fossil epiboles (e.g., Prasopora bryozoans), and deformed beds, have been previously documented in the central Kentucky outcrop belt.We also sampled one core for carbon isotopes as a means of providing additional constraints on correlation into the central Kentucky outcrop belt. The facies succession in the lower half of the cores matches that of the lower members of the Lexington Formation in Kentucky (Curdsville, Logana, and lower Grier members). The upper half of the cores contain a more shale-rich facies succession, recording offshore environments that were substantially deeper than those of the Lexington Platform of the central Kentucky outcrop belt. These results corroborate previous studies, which indicated that the Sebree Trough expanded during the earliest Katian. Two positive carbon isotope excursions identified from outcrops of the Logana Member and the Macedonia bed on the Lexington Platform, are clearly recognizable in the sampled Cincinnati region drill core.We believe that one or both of these excursions are equivalent to the Guttenberg carbon isotope excursion (GICE) of the upper Mississippi Valley.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum, cvs. Mountain Fresh, Big Dena, and Trust) plants with symptoms of pith necrosis were received from six commercial high tunnels in Ohio during May and July 2012. Disease incidence ranged from 1 to 5%. Symptoms included wilting of shoots, dry, dark brown coalescent lesions on stems, brown discolored pith with a ladder-like appearance, and in some cases, adventitious root formation. Bacterial streaming was observed microscopically from necrotic stem tissue. Bacteria were isolated from surface-sterilized diseased stem tissue by plating 10-fold serial dilutions onto yeast dextrose carbonate (YDC) and Pseudomonas F (PF) agar media. The majority of the colonies recovered were similar in morphology on YDC: round and mucoid, with a greenish center that later became dry and winkled with a curly margin, and producing a yellow-green diffusible pigment. Colonies were creamy, yellow-brown in color and non-florescent on PF medium. Nine isolates from six plant samples were purified. All isolates were gram-negative, levan negative, oxidase positive, and potato rot negative. Three isolates were positive and six were negative for arginine dihydrolase activity. None induced a hypersensitive reaction in tobacco. All isolates grew at 37°C. The isolates were further identified by PCR assays using species-specific primers PC5/1-PC5/2 for Pseudomonas corrugata and PC1/1-PC1/2 for P. mediterranea (1,2). DNA of a reference P. mediterranea strain from Turkey was used as a positive control. A 600-bp band was amplified using P. mediterranea primers from the six arginine dihydrolase negative isolates recovered from four of six samples. An 1,100-bp band was amplified from the three arginine dihydrolase positive isolates from two other samples using P. corrugata primers. The 600-bp PCR products amplified from the P. mediterranea reference strain and isolate SM664-12 were purified and sequenced. The DNA sequence of SM664-12 was 99% aligned with that of the reference strain from Turkey and a BLAST search in NCBI indicated only one match with P. mediterranea strain G-229-21 (Accession No. EU117098.1), with an E-value 1e-145 and 84% identity. P. mediterranea (SM664-12) and P. corrugata (SM658-12) were each inoculated onto four 4-week-old tomato plants (cv. Mountain Fresh) by injecting a 50 μl bacterial suspension (108 CFU/ml) into the stem at the axil of the first true leaf (2). Negative control plants were injected with sterile water. Plants were kept in a mist chamber for 72 h at 25°C, then moved into a growth chamber maintained at 25/20°C day/night, 12-h light/dark, and 80% relative humidity. Plants exhibited dark brown lesions at the inoculation site after 4 weeks and brown discoloration of the pith developed, whereas no lesions were observed in control plants. The reisolated bacteria were tested by PCR and identified as P. corrugata and P. mediterranea. Therefore, we have confirmed that tomato pith necrosis in Ohio involves at least two bacteria, P. corrugata and P. mediterranea. Although tomato pith necrosis has been observed in Ohio since the 1990s, to our knowledge, this is the first confirmation of a causal agent as P. corrugata in Ohio and the first report of P. mediterranea causing tomato pith necrosis in the United States.
