Resumen
AbstractThe purpose of this chapter is to revisit and expand upon the concept of response-ability, shifting from the deconstructive homework of previous chapters to working towards a reconstructive response which renders science education more hospitable towards Indigenous science to-come. Braiding in the work of Torres Strait Islander scholar Martin Nakata’s theorizing of the cultural interface, which accounts for the ways in which hybridity between ways-of-knowing-in-being are unequal, problematic, and yet rife with possibility, this response takes the form of re(con)figuring scientific literacy. In four movements, this response: a) identifies scientific literacy as a central yet uncertain concept whose critical inhabitation is ripe for other meanings and enactments; b) explores Karen Barad’s subversion of scientific literacy as agential literacy as a productive location to rework the connectivity towards IWLN and TEK; c), utilizes agential literacy as proximal (yet differing) relation to bring in Gregory Cajete’s conception of Indigenous science as ecologies of relationships; and d) explores the generative points of resonance between agential literacy and ecologies of relationships. The chapter concludes with a cautionary note on points of convergence and points of divergence, wherein the proximal relation between agential literacy and ecologies of relationships is productively troubled.

Texto completo
Resumen
The primary purposes of this offwind sail investigation were to better understand offwind sail performance and to improve the ability to predict the performance of specific offwind sail shapes over a broad range of operating conditions. The study was designed to allow sail designers to answer the following questions: What are the optimal types of sails over specific bands of operating conditions and how is this optimum affected by changes in the vertical distribution of sail area (girth), camber (shape), and twist? The specific goal was to demonstrate improvements in predicted sail performance over targeted narrow bands of operating conditions expected during various legs of the 1997-98 Whitbread Round The World Race™. To achieve this goal, two major development tasks were first completed by the Glenn L. Martin Wind Tunnel (GLMWT), located at the University of Maryland College Park: a. Model Test Rig Development; b. Test Methodology Development. Once these development tasks were completed, a broad range of offwind runners and reachers of varying design were evaluated over appropriate ranges of angle of attack and trim settings.

(MESTRADO/MEIO).

Resumen
In a world stressed by a cultural crisis, carachterised by excessive abstraction and virtuality (ex: R.Reich’s Symbolic-analysts or/and R. Florida’s Creatives), observing self built city constitute not an escape but an exploration to change our point of view and find a new path of development. Self building involves at any scale, a practical attitude and return to an psychosomatic interaction among inhabitants and built environment. Focusing in self-building can become a Slowskij’s “estragement” to reactivate different sensibilities, for a new philosophy in contemporary design. Morphological reading of self-built environments has a double importance: for self-built cities themselves, to give response to the need of social cohesion, for a restructuring that traduces these needs into building and transforms the plural individual needs into a collective urban structure; for the enrichment that this reading can give to the architectural community culture, a new panorama where we can search new path to go over the crisis; The paper focuses on the scales that goes from building and construction material scale to urban fabric scale. Starting from the observation of a brick’s furnace, through the observation of an original constructive system, up to the aggregation of each built organism in the urban fabric it will be possible to read and interpret the formative process and to evaluate, through design experience cases, some new path for the contemporary design that come from this interpretation of self-built: design as a formative process re-activation, artisanal-not authorial sensorial design; References G. Nishida, Yoshifumi, Hideo Nishida, Hiromi Kobayashi y Takahiro Nishioka. "Experimental and Numerical Study of Return Channel Flow Influence on Surge Margin of a Multi-Stage Centrifugal Compressor". En ASME Turbo Expo 2015: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2015-42546.

Texto completo
Resumen
Experimental and numerical studies were performed to investigate influences of the return channel flow on the surge margin of a multistage centrifugal compressor. Two return channels, which were named RCH-A and RCH-B, were designed and evaluated in a two-stage centrifugal compressor. The measured performance of the compressor suggested that the surge margin of this compressor was dominated by the operating limit of the second stage and that the surge margin of RCH-B was 5% larger than that of RCH-A. The outlet flow of RCH-A and RCH-B swirled in a counter-rotating direction near the shroud region, and the flow angle at the outlet of RCH-A was larger than that of RCH-B. CFD was conducted to investigate the internal flow in the return channel. The CFD results of both RCH-A and RCH-B showed that the flow separation occurred on the suction surface of the return vanes near the operating limit. This separation induced the velocity difference between the suction and pressure sides, and the swirl flow in the counter-rotating direction was generated by this velocity difference. The swirl flow in the counter-rotating direction increased the blade loading of the second stage impeller at the operating limit. It was considered that the blade loading of RCH-B was lower than that of RCH-A at the operating limit, because the swirl flow in the counter-rotating direction of RCH-B was weaker than that of RCH-A. Therefore, the surge margin of the second impeller with RCH-B seemed to be larger than that with RCH-A. It was conclude from the experimental and numerical results that the locally swirl flow in the counter-rotating direction at the outlet of the return channels near the shroud side influenced the surge margins of the downstream impeller and the multi-stage centrifugal compressor.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2014-28644.

Texto completo
Resumen
Structural strengths of the piping and components in NPPs have been designed with seismic margin. They are classified seismically S, B and C class in terms of the influence rate to nuclear safety. For the highest seismic class (Class S) equipment, it is clarified that they have enough seismic margins against design seismic conditions by shaking table tests or numerical simulations. However, for the lower seismic class (Class B and C) equipment, their seismic margins have not been clarified quantitatively. In this paper, in order to evaluate seismic robustness of the lower seismic class equipment with no clarification of seismic margin, seismic influences of the lower seismic class equipment in NPPs damaged by actual large earthquakes have been surveyed and sorted as a database, and the integrity of the lower class equipment have been discussed. Seismic effects on 24 plants damaged by the recent large 6-earthquakes are surveyed, sorted as a database, and investigated. As a result, a total of 29 cases of function deterioration or loss were observed. Considering the total number of components and piping, the frequency of those cases in class B and C components and piping was low. And also, as it is found there are a few cases of degradation or loss of function in the equipment installed on the bedrock or in the buildings.

Mesozoic event-stratigraphy of the Scotian Margin, offshore Nova Scotia: preliminary palynological results from the Upper Member of the Missisauga Formation in Panuke B-90. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/331910.

Resumen
Conceived as a continuation of the previous multidisciplinary event stratigraphy studies of the Late Cretaceous to Neogene of the Scotian Margin in the 2000s, the "Mesozoic eventstratigraphy of the Scotian Margin" project proposes a similar study for the Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous interval. The first stage of this project comprises a detailed multidisciplinary study of the composite Lower Cretaceous section from Panuke B-90 and Cohasset A-52 conventional cores. The present work reports initial palynologic data from the formal Upper Member of the Missisauga Formation in Panuke B-90. These data, combined with preliminary insights from sedimentary facies, macrofossil, and trace fossil analyses, suggest that from the base of the studied section upwards involves a transition from a neritic/shelfal to a mainly estuarine-brackish setting. This was followed by a transgressive cycle through the Upper Member of the Missisauga Formation, which culminated in a return of more fully marine environments near the base of the overlying Naskapi Member of the Logan Canyon Formation. It is apparent that this transgression is not continuous, but intercalated with smaller cycles, well documented by the fluctuations in dominance between terrestrial (pollen and spore abundance) versus marine (mainly dinoflagellate-cyst abundance and richness) palynomorph trends through this succession, presented here in three main intervals. The dinoflagellate-cyst assemblages and key bioevents recorded in this initial study indicate a Barremian age for the Upper Member of the Missisauga Formation in Panuke B-90. The overlying Naskapi Member is expected to be of early Aptian age based on previous reports of the presence of the age-diagnostic ammonite Deshayesites sp. Ongoing work on the conventional cores from Panuke B-90, and subsequently Cohasset A-52 and other wells, will contribute to a comprehensive Mesozoic event-stratigraphic framework for the Scotian Margin.

Resumen
Two stratigraphic sections were measured through Late Triassic - Early Jurassic aged strata in the Blue Mountains map area (NTS 340-B/11) on Ellesmere Island and the Depot Point map area (NTS 049-G/7) on Axel Heiberg Island. These sections are subdivided in terms of established member and formation names based on previous mapping along the north-eastern margin of the Sverdrup Basin. The lowermost strata in the Heiberg Formation, the Romulus Member (510-575 m thick), is a coarsening-upward succession of mudstone to fine-grained sandstone from a prodelta to delta plain environment. The overlying Fosheim Member (317-425 m) is a coal-bearing and sandstone-rich interval from a mixed alluvial-marine environment, such as a delta plain. It is overlain by the Remus Member (100-112 m); a sandstone-rich unit representative of shallow marine deposits. The Heiberg Formation at Depot Point is of similar thickness (1009 m) to the Blue Mountains (1035 m) and may represent a marginally more distal basinal setting with a thinner Fosheim Member but a slightly thicker Romulus and Remus members.

Resumen
Multiple oil discoveries reveal the global scale and economic importance of a distinctive reservoir type composed of possible microbial lacustrine carbonates like the Lower Cretaceous pre-salt reservoirs in deepwater offshore Brazil and Angola. Marine microbialite reservoirs are also important in the Neoproterozoic to lowest Cambrian starta of the South Oman Salt Basin as well as large Paleozoic deposits including those in the Caspian Basin of Kazakhstan (e.g., Tengiz field), and the Cedar Creek Anticline fields and Ordovician Red River “B” horizontal play of the Williston Basin in Montana and North Dakota, respectively. Evaluation of the various microbial fabrics and facies, associated petrophysical properties, diagenesis, and bounding surfaces are critical to understanding these reservoirs. Utah contains unique analogs of microbial hydrocarbon reservoirs in the modern Great Salt Lake and the lacustrine Tertiary (Eocene) Green River Formation (cores and outcrop) within the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah. Comparable characteristics of both lake environments include shallowwater ramp margins that are susceptible to rapid widespread shoreline changes, as well as compatible water chemistry and temperature ranges that were ideal for microbial growth and formation/deposition of associated carbonate grains. Thus, microbialites in Great Salt Lake and from the Green River Formation exhibit similarities in terms of the variety of microbial textures and fabrics. In addition, Utah has numerous examples of marine microbial carbonates and associated facies that are present in subsurface analog oil field cores.

Bingham-Koslowski, N., S. Zhang y T. McCartney. Lower Paleozoic strata in the Labrador-Baffin Seaway (Canadian margin) and Baffin Island. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/321827.

Texto completo
Resumen
Lower Paleozoic strata occur offshore Labrador (Middle to Upper Ordovician), offshore Baffin Island in western Davis Strait (Upper Ordovician), as well as onshore Baffin Island (Cambrian to Silurian). Paleozoic carbonate rocks (limestone and dolostone units) dominate with occurrences of siliciclastic strata found in the offshore Labrador subsurface (in the Freydis B-87 well) and in outcrop on Baffin Island. In the Labrador-Baffin Seaway, Lower Paleozoic strata primarily exist as isolated erosional remnants, where historically, minimal effort has been made to correlate Paleozoic outliers due to their lateral discontinuity coupled with inconsistent age data. The Lower Paleozoic of the Labrador-Baffin Seaway and Baffin Island can be viewed as two subsets that do not appear to be correlatable: the southern Lower Paleozoic of the Labrador margin and the northern Lower Paleozoic of the southeastern Baffin Shelf and onshore Baffin Island.

Geology and geochemistry of mafic and ultramafic bodies in the Shebandowan mine area, Wawa-Abitibi terrane: implications for Ni-Cu-(PGE) and Cr-(PGE) mineralization, Ontario and Quebec. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/329394.

Resumen
The Shebandowan Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposit occurs in the Shebandowan greenstone belt in the Wawa-Abitibi terrane. This deposit is one of a few economic Ni-Cu-(PGE) deposits in the Superior Province and one of a very few deposits worldwide that contains both Ni-Cu-(PGE) and Cr-(PGE) mineralization. The mafic-ultramafic successions in the area comprise abundant flows and sills of tholeiitic basalt and lesser Al-undepleted komatiite (MgO >18 wt%, Al2O3/TiO2 = 15-25), the latter indicating separation from mantle sources at shallow levels. Siliceous high-Mg basalts (MgO 8-12 wt%, SiO2 > 53 wt%, TiO2 < 1.2 wt%, La/Sm[MN] < 1-2) are relatively abundant in the area and likely represent crustally contaminated komatiites. Ultramafic bodies in the Shebandowan mine area comprise at least three or four komatiitic sills (A-B, C, D) and at least two komatiitic flows (E, F), all of which are altered to serpentinites or talc-carbonate schists with relict igneous chromite and rare relict igneous orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene. Unit A-B contains pentlandite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pyrite-magnetite mineralization, occurring as massive sulfides, sulfide breccias, or stringers, and subeconomic chromite mineralization in contorted massive bands varying from a few millimetres up to 10 metres thick. The localization of massive and semi-massive Ni-Cu-(PGE) ores along the margins of Unit A and the paucity of disseminated and net-textured ores suggest tectonic mobilization. Chromite is typically zoned with Cr-Mg-Al-rich (chromite) cores and Fe-rich (ferrichromite/magnetite) rims due to alteration and/or metamorphism, but rarely contains amoeboid magnetite cores. The thickness of chromite in Unit B is too great to have crystallized in cotectic proportion from the komatiitic magma and a model involving dynamic upgrading of magnetite xenoliths derived from interflow oxide facies iron formations is being tested.

Resumen
The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Reauthorization Act of 2006 mandat¬ed the research and management of the nation’s deep-sea coral resources through establishment of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra¬tion’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program. The challenge for Alaska was daunting, where expansive, world-class fisheries often coincided with extraordinarily rich coral habitats for a high-latitude region. The first chal¬lenge was to inventory known locations of deep-sea corals. Many coral records and some museum collections existed from Alaska, but the taxonomy of cor¬als was little studied and field iden¬tification of corals was problematic. Formal bycatch programs and research activities in recent decades provided many more specimens for taxonomic study, but guides to species were largely incomplete, inaccurate, and outdated given the fast pace of species discovery in Alaska. We provide a comprehen¬sive, up-to-date guide, detailing 161 coral taxa identified from museum collections, primary literature, and video records. Each profile includes a description, images for each taxon, taxonomic history, biology, ecology, geographical distribution, and habitat, including depth distribution. Corals are found in the six regions of Alaska but the coral fauna of the Aleutian Islands is by far the most species rich. The state of taxonomy for some coral groups is ex¬cellent, while others require additional collections and more taxonomic work. Construction of this guide resulted in descriptions of several antipatharian species, published separately from this guide (Alternatipathes mirabilis, Bathypathes alaskensis, B. ptiloides, B. tiburonae, and Parantipathes pluma) and the scleractinian Flabellum (Flabel¬lum) oclairi Cairns, sp. nov. described herein. The guide provides informa¬tion for targeting new collections and identifying areas of high abundance and indicator species of vulnerable marine ecosystems. Stakeholders can now more adequately assess Alaska’s coral resources and risks from natural and anthropogenic stressors.

Resumen
Botrytis cinerea is the postharvest pathogen of many agricultural produce with table grapes, strawberries and tomatoes as major targets. The high efficiency with which B. cinerea causes disease on these produce during storage is attributed in part due to its exceptional ability to develop at very low temperature. Our major goal was to understand the genetic determinants which enable it to develop at low temperature. The specific research objectives were: 1. Identify expression pattern of genes in a coldenriched cDNA library. 2. Identify B. cinerea orthologs of cold-induced genes 3. Profile protein expression and secretion at low temperature on strawberry and grape supplemented media. 4. Test novel methods for the functional analysis of coldresponsive genes. Objective 1 was modified during the research because a microarray platform became available and it allowed us to probe the whole set of candidate genes according to the sequence of 2 strains of the fungus, BO5.10 and T4. The results of this experiment allowed us to validate some of our earlier observations which referred to genes which were the product of a SSH suppression-subtraction library. Before the microarray became available during 2008 we also analyzed the expression of 15 orthologs of cold-induced genes and some of these results were also validated by the microarray experiment. One of our goals was also to perform functional analysis of cold-induced genes. This goal was hampered for 3 years because current methodology for transformation with ‘protoplasts’ failed to deliver knockouts of bacteriordopsin-like (bR) gene which was our primary target for functional analysis. Consequently, we developed 2 alternative transformation platforms, one which involves an air-gun based technique and another which involves DNA injection into sclerotia. Both techniques show great promise and have been validated using different constructs. This contribution is likely to serve the scientific community in the near future. Using these technologies we generated gene knockout constructs of 2 genes and have tested there effect on survival of the fungus at low temperature. With reference to the bR genes our results show that it has a significant effect on mycelial growth of the B. cinerea and the mutants have retarded development at extreme conditions of ionic stress, osmotic stress and low temperature. Another gene of unknown function, HP1 is still under analysis. An ortholog of the yeast cold-induced gene, CCH1 which encodes a calcium tunnel and was shown to be cold-induced in B. cinerea was recently cloned and used to complement yeast mutants and rescue them from cold-sensitivity. One of the significant findings of the microarray study involves a T2 ribonuclease which was validated to be cold-induced by qPCR analysis. This and other genes will serve for future studies. In the frame of the study we also screened a population of 631 natural B. cinerea isolates for development at low temperature and have identified several strains with much higher and lower capacity to develop at low temperature. These strains are likely to be used in the future as candidates for further functional analysis. The major conclusions from the above research point to specific targets of cold-induced genes which are likely to play a role in cold tolerance. One of the most significant observations from the microarray study is that low temperature does not induce ‘general stress response in B. cinerea, which is in agreement to its exceptional capacity to develop at low temperature. Due to the tragic murder of the Co-PI Maria R. Davis and GopiPodila on Feb. 2010 it is impossible to deliver their contribution to the research. The information of the PI is that they failed to deliver objective 4 and none of the information which relates to objective 3 has been delivered to the PI before the murder or in a visit to U. Alabama during June, 2010. Therefore, this report is based solely on the IS data.

Haines y Rosenfeld. L52125 Physical Performance and Inspection Objectives to Inspect Currently Non Piggable Pipelines. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), enero de 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011137.

Resumen
A significant portion of the pipeline infrastructure cannot be assessed for integrity using in-line inspection. There may also be reasons why some segments cannot be readily assessed by hydrostatic testing or by direct assessment. New standards and regulations for integrity management provide for using other technology that can be demonstrated to be as effective in assessing for the presence of integrity threats as the standard techniques. The first part of the report discusses a survey of PRCI member pipeline operating companies investigating the reasons why their systems are not piggable. The results are intended to be an aid to determining the direction of future PRCI research and development efforts. The results revealed that 62% of the pipe surveyed is presently piggable, and those members answering the survey plan to make another 21% of the system piggable. The survey further indicated that members plan to use direct assessment as the primary choice for inspecting nonpiggable segments. Consequently, the survey suggests that the primary goal of the Committee in addressing nonpiggable lines should be to validate direct assessment, followed by developing new above ground direct assessment and metal loss detection tools. The second part of the report discusses an analysis to establish suitable detection criteria for alternative assessment methods. Criteria for metal loss due to corrosion were established for 2 NPS to 24 NPS pipe of Grades B, X42, and X52 in all standard class locations so as to assure the same margin of safety afforded by the minimum hydrostatic test required per class. Criteria were also proposed for stress-corrosion cracking, selective corrosion in ERW seams, and mechanical damage.
