Massarello, Chloe Faith. "William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, and the Commissioning of the History of William Marshal". PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/330.

Texto completo
Resumen
In the mid-1220s, William Marshal, second earl of Pembroke, commissioned the History of William Marshal, a verse history which recounts the life of his father, the first earl of Pembroke. The History has been utilized as a source of information about its titular subject by modern historians, but none have examined the causes behind its commissioning and the significance of the document within the context of the second earl's political career in depth. This thesis seeks to increase understanding of the History by placing it within this context and examining the second earl's influence on its contents. Primary sources, including contemporary letters and court records contained within the Curia Regis Rolls, help reconstruct the political career of the second earl and reveal the reasons why he may have found it expedient to commission the History. An analysis of the History itself indicates that the document reflects the second earl's concerns. The introduction and first chapter of this thesis provide historiographical background for the History, both within its contemporary setting and as a type of work analyzed by modern historians. They indicate the importance of understanding the political and social function of the History and argue that the modern label of biography should not be applied to it. In the second chapter, primary sources and detailed studies of the minority and reign of Henry III are utilized to illustrate the second earl's political career and his conflicts with fellow barons and the crown over property and his unconventional marriage into the royal family. The third chapter offers an interpretation of the History with reference to the earl's career. This thesis concludes that the second earl commissioned the History in response to the objections raised to his marriage.

The word pause in \"Pause for Painting\" refers to the moments of suspension that my paintings suggest as well as to the action of pausing a video scene that later on will serve as \"model\" for the painting. Over the last four years, I realized short essays dealing with my working process and a series of paintings on the theme of the city and its dwellers. Concepts, such as absorption, fluidity, deformation, transformation, transit, approaching, distancing, motion and stillness pass through the text and the painting. The embodiment of these thoughts occurs by means of an exhibition of the works done in the period.

Noble, Evan S. "Marshall Plan Films and Americanization". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32261.

Texto completo
Resumen
George Marshall's speech to an audience at Harvard University in June of 1947 announced a plan that eventually made its way through the United States congress and took the form of the European Recovery Plan (ERP). The ERP distributed roughly thirteen billion dollars in aid to sixteen European countries. The ECA grew out of this program as the managerial arm of the ERP. The ECAâ s propaganda campaign included pamphlets, posters, radio broadcasts, traveling puppet shows, and finally 250 films created between 1949-1953. Marshall Plan Films discussed productivity, multilateral trade, and labor unions. For Marshall Planners these issues were the key to both revitalizing the European economy, and creating a self sustaining Europe. In film, Europeans could see not only the modernizing techniques, building projects, and examples of Marshall Plan, but they were treated to visions of the American lifestyle as well. This study is an attempt to explicate the meanings and messages in the Marshall Plan Filmography. The Marshall Plan launched a massive propaganda campaign in an attempt to reformat the ideals of Europeans. The Plan was ostensibly an attempt to combat Communism as well as to re-vamp the economy of Europe. However, the films presented American ideals as something to aspire to: not only in business, but also in living everyday life. By stressing consumption over conservation and massive production over craftsmanship, the films told Europeans what America thought was best for them, and what would be beneficial for their future. Marshall Planners effectively sought to make Europe into a new, more American, place to live.

Upadhyay, Neerja. "Management of the Lea Marston lakes". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2002. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.564485.

Texto completo
Resumen
One of the practices for dealing with water pollution from point and non point pollution sources is the use of on-line purification lakes. The Lea Marston lakes were built in the early 1980' s to reduce the pollution load transported by the River Tame to the River Trent. The lakes operate on the principle of particle bound contaminant sedimentation. The lakes were observed to be efficient at reducing suppressed (ATU) biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(ATU)), suspended solids (SS) and metals under dry weather flow and wet weather flow conditions. However, ammoniacal-nitrogen (ammonia) is observed to increase across Lake 1. The dominant mechanism of removal is via sedimentation with greater removal occurring under higher inlet concentrations. The addition of ammonia occurs possibly via diffusion with the bed sediments providing a source of ammonia. The bed sediments were identified as a potential pollution source and processes such as diffusion and resuspension could adversely affect the water quality across Lake 1. Porewater and surface water profiles identify the significance of the bed sediments as a sink for dissolved oxygen and a source of ammonia. A modelling study showed that a River Quality Objective (RQO) of River Ecosystem Class (RE) 2 could be achieved at the lakes inlet by improvements in nearby wastewater treatment works effluent quality and water quality from the upper catchment. However, the outlet water quality would probably be adversely influenced by ammonia released from the lake sediments.

Wood, Cathy. "The Marshall Islands and the Germans, 1860-1914". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1988. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26184.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Marshall Islands are to be found in the very heart of the Pacific Ocean and are quite the furthest of all South Sea Archipelagos from the major ports of the large continents bordering on the Pacific Basin. This geographical position meant that the Marshall Islanders were far away from the traditional shipping routes of the early sailing vessels and remained undisturbed by the events of the outside world. Their contacts with exogenous elements up to the beginning of the nineteenth century were brief and accidentaL‘ But unlike other South Sea island groups this isolation extended well into the middle of the nineteenth century as the violent reputation of the Marshallese chiefs and the relatively inhospitable nature of the people assisted in keeping passing ships at bay. The frequent calling of whaling vessels and the intermittent residency of deserters, that was so much the norm in other Pacific Island'chains , was almost non-existant in the Marshalls. This independence on the part of the Marshall Islanders was eventually eroded, not by the more violent and belligerent elements of South Sea pirates like Bully Hayes and Captain Ben Pease, but by quiet, peaceable missionaries from genteel parlours of Boston middle class suburbs. Their settlement in the islands in 1857 prized open the door of trade and allowed the irreversible contact and influence of outside cultures. The first trader to take advantage was a German from Braunschweig, Adolf Capelle, but his roots were not firmly implanted in the Germanic States (Germany was not founded as a nation until 1871L and his connections did not extend beyond the Pacific area. The linking of the Marshalls to German shores came through the later establishment of the Hamburg trading houses of Godeffroys and Hernsheims in the 1870s. It was the activities of these companies and their demands for German government support of their trading interest that led to the founding of a German Protectorate in the islands in 1885. This ensured a continual social, political and economic relationship between the German nation and the Marshallese people until the outbreak of the First World War.

Using Joseph Wright's painting, An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump as an inspirational starting point, Shelagh Stephenson's An Experiment with an Air Pump explores the depth of human existence using universal conflicts such as: morals versus ethics, science versus God and right versus wrong. Since the play's premiere in 1998, it has provided a forum for hot button topics such as stem cell research, abortion, and scientific experimentation. The University of New Orleans' production not only presented the issues in the play, it strives to be an example of theatrical excellence, challenge and engage both the company and the audience.

Resumen
This study examines the impact of the Marshall Plan on the British Labour government and the trade union movement. It argues that the British government was able to 'manage' relations with the US in terms of limiting unwanted US influence, while restructuring relations with its domestic support base. in this way, the British government was able to play what Putnam has referred to as a two-level game, satisfying demands at both the national and international levels. The Marshall Plan provides evidence of how, as Putnam explains, 'central decision-makers strive to reconcile domestic and international imperatives simultaneously'. By drawing on TUC archives it shows how the government and the leadership of the TUC used the Marshall Plan to realign the unions and increase their control over the labour movement. The study rejects arguments that the Labour government was forced to change its policies because of the Marshall Plan. Instead it shows that the Labour government used American pressure to persuade its own constituents of the value of its policies. The government and trade union leaderships were able control those on the left through an anti-communist campaign while removing communists from positions of authority. Through its role in the establishment of an anti-communist, pro-Marshall Plan international trade union body, the British Trades Union Congress weakened the left's source of external support. The establishment of a network of pro-Marshall Plan organisations such as the European Recovery Programme Trade Union Advisory Committee and the Anglo-American Council on Productivity, helped the trade union leadership to delineate the parameters of debate and to assure the longer-term marginalisation of the far left.

This work generalizes the family of Marshall-Olkin distributions by adding parameters, making it a new more exible class, creating the new Generalized Exponentialized Marshall-Olkin Weibull distribution (GEMOW). Its probability density function and the associated risk function were studied with promising results. We found some quantities such as moments, moment generating function, quantile function and median, as well Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, for the proposed distribution. We drawed a simulation and we employed the bootstrap resampling procedure for the standard errors of the estimators of the model parameters. We applied the new distribution to magnitudes earthquakes dataset from Fiji archipelago, glass ber resistance dataset to the proposed model, sub-models and competitors distributions. Also it was obtained a regression model for censored data that was applied to data from a study of AIDS, and a Bayesian model implemented for carbon bre data. Comparing with the others distributions, the results demonstrate that GEMOW has superior t to the applied dataset.

The novels written by Paule Marshall are examined chronologically to demonstrate how Africa functions and is represented in her works. Published interviews and essays by Marshall are also examined, as well as critical analysis of her works by scholars. Africa is present in Paule Marshall's novels through ritual, history, language, and myth. Paule Marshall's work demonstrates how Africanisms operate in the United States and in the Caribbean. She articulates the need for people throughout the African diaspora to confront and use the past as a vehicle for empowerment. Marshall's protagonists are women who find that when they confront the past not only do they better understand themselves as African people, but they also gain greater awareness of their womanhood. Marshall's female protagonists discover that their African identity and their female identity are intertwined.

So far, Alfred Marshall s work (1842-1924) has been little explored in Brazil. Typically, Marshall is mentioned in economic historiography only as the author of the so-called marginalist or neoclassic school. Since our aim in this paper is to give a broader visibility to this author, it appeared to us that the initial steps here should not be centered around the complex discussion that involves economic theories or the mathematical aspects of such discussions. As regards the latter, Marshall himself insisted in distributing them into appendices aimed at, as told by the author, rendering his work accessible to as many people as possible. Therefore, we decided to follow this author s intellectual path in order to out the contributions he gave to the definition of economic science from his major book, Principles of Economics, published in 1890. Marshall became the responsible for the institutionalization of a new science when he founded the School of Economics and Politics at Cambridge University, defining the role of both economics and economists. The scope of this research encompasses two principal lines: first, to approach Marshall s work from the conditions found in the Victorian age, between 1837 and 1901. In this sense, we looked for those elements which influenced the formation of the author, and which have been influenced by him. Then, we looked for the philosophic and scientific aspects of Marshall s ideas contained in his book Principles of Economics, in which he defines the extent of economic studies.

This study examines the development of Marshall Keeble’s work during the early and middle parts of the twentieth century in the Church of Christ. The purpose of this study is to examine the direction taken by Keeble in his work and determine whether he was a submissive Tom used by whites to accomplish their goals among blacks, or to determine if he was pursuing his own grand strategy to defuse racial tension in the Church of Christ. Conclusions of this research denote that Marshall Keeble was following a grand strategy, or a decisive course of action designed to erase the color line in the Church of Christ without the negative effects of creating further division in the church. The final analysis demonstrates that the strategy of Marshall Keeble was effective, whereas the strategy of Keeble’s contemporaries was impotent.

Resumen
Heraldry, heralds and the Earl Marshal played a conspicuous part in English life during the period c.1480-1603. This thesis explores their significance in the military, diplomatic and court cultures of the period. In four thematic parts, it seeks to reveal their crucial importance in the politics and government of the period. The first section explores the changing status of royal heraldry and heralds, as chivalric culture took on a more monarchical bent and ideas of sovereignty crystallized. It attempts to demonstrate how the royal coat of anus and heralds became emblems of sovereign authority and imperial kingship. The second section investigates the role of heralds in war, politics and diplomacy, exploring the divers ways in which they were employed at home and abroad. It endeavours to explain the relative decline of their international responsibilities, and the persistence of their domestic functions. The third section examines how reforms at the English court and changes in the heralds' . internal affairs helped to re orient their activities towards armorial matters. It looks at the reasons why grants of arms, noble funerals and heraldic visitations came gradually to dominate the heralds' activities, and how the intersection of patronage and ideology drove changes to the rules governing the bearing of anus. The fourth section examines how one of the great officers of state, the Earl Marshal, exploited his military and heraldic jurisdiction for political advancement during the sixteenth century. It seeks to show how a symbiotic relationship between the heralds and the Earl Marshal gradually developed, driven by needs of patronage and mutual interest.

Since the pioneering work of Harold Innes and Marshal McLuhan, accounts of social and cultural change that assign a key role to innovations in media have enjoyed considerable currency. These Medium Theories, as Joshua Meyrowitz has usefully dubbed them, are particularly concerned with how the shift from oral to literate to electronic media has successively reconfigured both cultural systems and their everyday deployment. This model of mediation suffers from major weaknesses however. It is media-centric, crudely deterministic, ethnocentric, and takes no account of patterns of social inequality. Hence, while this thesis retains Medium Theory's core concern with the impact of different modes of mediation, it draws on work in Critical Sociology and communications studies to address these deficiencies and develop an alternative model of Critical Mediation. Using contemporary Mexico City as a case study, the potential of this approach is pursued through a detailed study of the ways in which different forms of mediation shape the organisation and uses of the communal symbolic spaces that make up the Social Imaginary.

Resumen
Pomona College has professed a commitment to sustainable leadership and decreased water use, exemplified by shifts to garden areas with native landscaping. However, the central college green space, Marston Quadrangle, was renovated in the summer of 2012 and only a few native plants were added to the landscape. In this thesis, I explore Pomona’s Marston Quadrangle as a visual and symbolic space, attempting to better understand the intentions of the landscaped area. I first briefly examine recent campus dialogue surrounding sustainability, water issues, and native landscaping. Then, I look at the history and architectural iconography Marston Quadrangle is steeped in, as well as some of the ideas the architects and landscapers had. I found that Marston Quadrangle is deeply tied to Pomona College’s history and identity, representing the ways in which the college tried to establish itself as on par with the schools of the East coast and England. Attempts to renovate the Quadrangle have placed a priority on restoring the vision of Ralph Cornell, the landscape architect, when it is clear that late in his life he regretted the non-native landscaping decisions he had made. I conclude that Marston Quadrangle no longer serves its purpose of establishing Pomona College as unique and works against the college’s sustainability goals. In light of this, I make suggestions for planting changes that would allow the iconography of the architecture to interact with native plantings, creating a deeply symbolic gesture of sustainable leadership and uniquely Southern California identity.

Resumen
Among Marston's earliest works are two books of verse satires (Certaine Satyres and The Scourge of Villanie, both 1598) and three plays (Antonio and Mellida, Antonio's Revenge and What You Will, all between 1600-1602) in which he explored the composition of human identity. From the initial premiss that the self is socially constructed and tends always to be dependent on the social and material contexts in which it exists, he developed a conception of existential struggle, in which the individual self either succumbs to the influence of its environment, or else achieves an authentic autonomy by imposing its own reality on the world around it. The thesis is in five main parts. Chapter I reviews theories of identity in the sixteenth century, analyses the Roman verse satires on which Elizabethan satires were modelled, and gives an account of the developments in English society at the end of the sixteenth century that helped to generate a satirical discourse in which anxiety as to the stability of the self was prominent. Chapter II examines these satires, focusing on Marston but paying close attention also to such other authors as Donne, Hall, Guilpin, Lodge and the anonymous author of Micro-Cynicon. Chapters III and IV are a close reading of the three plays named above; it is argued that in them Marston developed the ideas about identity which he had first conceived in the satires into a considered anatomy of the self. Chapter V looks briefly at Marston's later plays, especially Sophonisba (1606) with the same principles in mind. As will be apparent, the emphasis of the thesis is on Marston as a thinker, rather than as a poetic technician or man of the theatre, although these aspects of him are considered where they are relevant.

In survival analysis, the response is usually the time until the occurrence of an event of interest, called failure time. The main characteristic of survival data is the presence of censoring which is a partial observation of response. Associated with this information, some models occupy an important position by properly fit several practical situations, among which we can mention the Weibull model. Marshall-Olkin extended form distributions other a basic generalization that enables greater exibility in adjusting lifetime data. This paper presents a simulation study that compares the gradient test and the likelihood ratio test using the Marshall-Olkin extended form Weibull distribution. As a result, there is only a small advantage for the likelihood ratio test

The literary review Marsyas has been diffused as a monthly publication between 1921 and 1961. A meeting, between the trilingual self-taught poet Sully-André Peyre (1890-1961) and the professor, specialized in English literature, Denis Saurat (1890-1958), is the origin of this foundation. Marsyas has been, since the beginning, a multicultural review because of the complex personalities and various talents of its founders: publication of diverse languages, patterns and topics have been associated. In a first volume, succeeding a chronological progression, the contributors and their works are presented as a part of the review’s major topics: publication of poetry and literary criticism, mainly, extracts of prose and theatre, more rarely. This presentation is structured according to the founder’s choice giving a major position to three languages: English, French, Provençal and others Occitan dialects. This essay focuses too on the numerous publications devoted to languages and literatures which are not part of the founding unity. Marsyas’ analytic and descriptive tables constitute a second volume which closes with a triple index including the contributors, the authors of analysed works and the authors of cited works
