Resumen
Understanding patterns of species richness is a major goal for ecologists, especially in space-limited habitats where many organisms live on top of others (epibiosis, e.g. by algae growing on gastropods in marine environments). We tested the hypotheses that species richness of epiflora on the gastropod Turbo torquatus would not differ between regions with similarly rich algal floras, and that epifloral richness would increase with increasing gastropod size. Macroalgal floras of Hamelin Bay (HB), Marmion (M), Jurien Bay (JB) and Kalbarri (K), Western Australia, ranged from ∼20 to 40 species reef–1 (JB = HB = M ≥ K). Epiflora on small T. torquatus (shell area <150 cm2) did not differ among regions but epifloral richness increased with increasing basibiont size. Large T. torquatus (>150 cm2) were only found in Hamelin Bay and Marmion, where epifloral richness differed substantially. Epifloral richness was positively related to basibiont size in Marmion but not in Hamelin Bay. However, densities of patellid limpets on large T. torquatus were ∼4× higher in Hamelin Bay than in Marmion, implying that limpet grazing suppresses epifloral richness. Epifloral richness on turbinids is not simply associated with regional species pools or gastropod size; rather, biological interactions at the scale of individual basibionts apparently govern broad scale patterns of epibiosis.

Ryan, Kylie A. "Small, no-take marine protected areas and wave exposure affect temperate, subtidal reef communities at Marmion Marine Park, Western Australia". University of Western Australia. School of Plant Biology, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0130.

Resumen
[Truncated abstract] The ecological effects of marine protected areas (MPAs) in temperate ecosystems are poorly understood relative to their tropical counterparts. The limited number of rigorous empirical studies supporting existing theoretical models, increasing public awareness of the importance of marine conservation strategies and legislative requirements to review management effectiveness provide further impetus to study temperate MPAs. Investigations should consider confounding effects of natural variability if MPA effects are to be clearly demonstrated. This research helps to address these needs by investigating the short term effects of sanctuary zones (no-take MPAs where fishing is prohibited) and wave exposure at Marmion Marine Park, Western Australia. The three sanctuary zones at Marmion Marine Park are extremely small (0.061 0.279 km2) compared to most reported in the literature. The sanctuary zones are nested within a larger, fished zone (94.95 km2). The sanctuary zones have been protected from fishing since the year 2000. A post-hoc, asymmetrical sampling design was used in this study and involved surveys of fishes, mobile invertebrates and macroalgae at one sanctuary zone and two fished sites (controls) at each of three successive, subtidal reef lines. The three reef lines are exposed to a gradient in wave energy. The size structure and abundance of the heavily exploited Panulirus cygnus (Western Rock Lobster) were positively affected by protection from fishing in sanctuary zones, despite the highly mobile nature of this migratory species. The mean abundance of legal size lobsters was higher in sanctuary zones compared to fished sites during an interannual study (2003, 2005 and 2006). The total abundance of lobsters and the mean abundance of legal size lobsters were higher at inshore and offshore sanctuary zones compared to fished control sites during a 2005/2006 fishing season study. These zoning effects did not vary with the time of survey. ... Furthermore, the abundance of large lobsters in sanctuary zones decreased with the duration of the 2005/2006 fishing season. Similarly, it is likely that sanctuary zones are too small relative to the movement of fishes to adequately protect stocks of some targeted species. The small sanctuary zones at Marmion are unlikely to offer protection to highly mobile species over the long term. And finally, ecological assemblages within each level of wave exposure are distinct. Consequently for each assemblage type, the current reserve design does not include replication of sanctuary zones and does not offer any 'insurance' in the event of isolated impacts affecting a particular zone. This study has identified the benefits and deficiencies of the design and function of small no-take temperate MPAs in Western Australia. An increase in the size and number of sanctuary zones within each wave exposure level will help to address the v shortfalls of the zoning scheme and enhance the conservation benefits of management at Marmion Marine Park. More generally, this study demonstrates that the mobility of the species to be protected from fishing should be considered when designing MPAs. Lessons learned from this work will be beneficial for the future management and conservation of resources in the region and elsewhere.

Resumen
This thesis offers the first critical edition of Walter Scott's Marmion (1808). The poem as it is presented here is supported by a full representation of the editorial procedures adopted during the course of this edition. This thesis also provides an account of the processes by which the poem was transmitted into print, from its composition to its publishing history. The textual investigation is augmented by a critical evaluation of the poem's initial reception, as well as an engagement with the poem in light of current critical thinking.

McQuillan, Lea. "Species richness, density and cover of sponge assemblages on temperate reefs off Perth, Western Australia". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2006. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/359.

Texto completo
Resumen
Sponges were the dominant faunal benthic group, occupying 30 -50% of the limestone reef surface and displaying high diversity (>240 sponge species) on subtidal temperate reefs off Perth, Western Australia. Despite this high diversity there was little variation in composition among the six different sites sampled. However, there was within-site heterogeneity of sponge assemblages which has been ascribed to small-scale variation in light and sedimentation/abrasion rates. Differences in sponge assemblages were also detected between sampling times, species richness and sponge density were higher in winter compared to summer, whereas, sponge cover was higher in summer compared to winter. The results suggest that the growth and development of juveniles or annuals may have been adversely affected by the harsh conditions of winter. The higher temperatures in summer appeared to promote growth and reproduction of sponges. Rapid assessment techniques have been proposed to look for patterns in biodiversity in conservation biology studies, when detailed routine surveys are not feasible. Two rapid assessment techniques were assessed, firstly examining the dominant sponge species; and secondly aggregating the sponge species to order level. The results of two rapid assessment techniques were promising if comparing sponge assemblages across habitats. If the aim was to assess sponge assemblages across sites, neither rapid assessment technique showed the same results compared to species level data. The general conclusion for subtidal temperate reef sponge assemblages within Marmion Lagoon is that there is substantial loss of information for spatial comparisons when aggregating species to order level or using only the dominant sponges. What was found was that the two levels failed to detect differences among sites which were found in the species level data analyses, but all three analyses gave the same results for habitat data. In Western Australia only a few studies on sponges have been undertaken along the extensive coastline (12,500 km long). Previous sponge research in Western Australia occurred predominately as a result of taxonomic collections from expeditions undertaken in the 19th and early 201 h centuries. This study has described the 43 dominant sponge species that were found at six different sites on subtidal temperate reefs in Marmion Lagoon, Western Australia. Sponges were the dominant fauna found at most of the research sites off this coastal Perth location and included many species from a range of orders and families. Most of the species found occurred in sciaphilic (shade-loving) habitats. Only a few species occurred in full light conditions on the reef flats. This study documented 243 sponge species from subtidal limestone reefs between 8-12 metres in depth within the Lagoon. These 243 species comprised 197 siliceous sponges (Class Demospongiae) and 46 calcareous sponges (Class Calcarea) and were identified to at least order. Eighteen were identified to order, 88 to family, 35 to genus and 56 to species level. Approximately 30% of the species recorded here are possibly new to science.

Salmon, Nina Vest. "Paved with Good Intentions: The Road to Racial Unity in the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71390.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Right Reverend William Henry Marmion was consecrated as bishop of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia on May 13, 1954, days prior to the Brown v. Board of Education decision and just over a decade after the Episcopal Church's General Convention formally opposed racial discrimination. A diocesan conference center in Hungry Mother State Park, purchased soon after his consecration, sparked a controversy that was to smolder and flame for the first decade of Marmion's 25 years as bishop. Marmion led the move to desegregate the diocesan conference center, Hemlock Haven, in 1958 and subsequently effected integration by closing three of the four black churches in the diocese and inviting members to choose a neighboring church to join. The initial integration of the diocese was a turbulent process that centered around Hemlock Haven. The diocese moved with some difficulty towards racial integration in a microcosm of what was happening in the wider Church and in the United States. Historical documents, secondary sources, interviews, and theoretical understanding of minority responses to oppression help me to describe this time of racial desegregation of the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia and its implications. Critical theory gleaned from W. E. B. Du Bois and from Homi Bhabha informs my understanding of some of the implications as well as many of the actions and outcomes. Du Bois's notion of double consciousness and Bhbaba's similar term hybridity, both of which acknowledge a dual locus of identity and of power, are relevant to understanding some of the interactions revealed by primary source correspondence. I will focus on Hemlock Haven as the entry point into desegregation and on the black churches in the diocese, both before and after that critical point, adding the witness of black voices to the white narrative of this history. A historical look at the trajectory of race and race relations in the Episcopal Church informs the moment of the caesura--an interruption--the desegregation of Hemlock Haven, and the fate of the four black churches in the diocese. From the point of the rupture comes identification, the emergence of a new space, a cultural reboot.
