Resumen
Abstract: This article is a brief overview of Eastern Christian and Islamic collections in Minnesota, with a focus on the holdings of the largest such collection, located at the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library (HMML) in Collegeville. Minnesota's manuscripts are largely defined by their digital presence and physical absence, as HMML has amassed the world's largest collection of digital manuscript images while the digitized manuscripts remain in libraries around the world. However, HMML holds a (relatively) small collection of physical manuscripts as well, which is the focus of this survey. The collection includes Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, along with Christian manuscripts in Amharic, Arabic, Armenian, Church Slavonic, Coptic, Geʻez, Georgian, Greek, Russian, and Syriac. Highlights include twenty-one Geʻez magic scrolls, three copies of Muḥammad al-Jazūlī's Arabic prayer book Dalāʼil al-khayrāt , late antique Coptic and Greek texts on papyrus and wood, and a Georgian palimpsest fragment with two Syriac undertexts. The article describes the history of the institution and its manuscript holdings and gives an outline of the collection's contents.

Resumen
As is well known, the Nanki Music Library, Tokyo, contains numerous prints and manuscripts of Purcell's music, not least an important copy of Dido and Aeneas. Once belonging to the Purcell scholar William H. Cummings (1831–1915), these were acquired at auction in 1917 by the Marquis Yorisada Tokugawa, who intended them to form part of a music foundation (including a concert hall destroyed in the earthquake of 1923). On Tokugawa's ‘economic failure’ in 1931 ownership passed to Mr Kyubei Ohki, and, since 1996, to his successor Mr Itaru Ohki. Between 1970 and 1979 the material was accessible to the public through the Tokyo Music Culture Centre, and some of the collection was put on microfilm (now held by the Kunitachi College of Music). The manuscripts, however, are still unavailable to scholars, other than on microfilm.

Resumen
Thesis (MMus)--Stellenbosch University, 1993.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings: Unlocking the Scott Collection to the music world The University of Stellenbosch is in the possession of the valuable Scott Collection, as was bought from the estate of Gerrit Wessels, the beneficiary of Commander Michael Scott. The latter emigrated to South Africa because of health reasons, where he played a valuable role in the music circles of Cape Town. Music editions, manuscripts, gramophone records, and writings on music form about 20% of the Scott Collection. Providing music editions with RISM numbers and the international implication thereof The research had to determine whether editions could be listed in the RISM. This international inventory of first and early music editions lists all known and existing editions before and up to the year 1800. There are editions in the Scott Collection for example, which are some of the only few first edition copies in the world, A detailed description of the RISM and its activities are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Creating an user-friendly catalogue for the US Music Library It was considered a great matter of importance to create an user-friendly catalogue for research purposes. The editions discussed in this thesis are therefore presented in table-form. Introducing further research possibilities Through the survey done on the applicable music editions, it was discovered that 111 editions in the Scott Collections could be listed in the RISM. Seeing that no editions harboured in South Africa are listed in the RISM at present, this matter are naturally of international importance. This also creates opportunities for further research and international publications. Conservation of old paper It became evident during the course of the research survey that the University of Stellenbosch was unaware of the monetary and international historical value of the music editions in the Scott Collection. The collection is in danger of perishing, as it is not preserved according to international standards of conserving old paper. It is also not adequately protected from fire and theft hazards. This matter and some suggestions to improve the situation, were brought under the attention of the university authorities (see Chapter 9).

The purpose of this study is to investigate if three scientific articles concerning the cataloguing of alba amicorum written in the 1980’s and early 1990’s had any influence on the cataloguing of alba amicorum. Another purpose is to investigate the similarities and differences between the catalogues from the late 1980’s and onward. The focus lies on the categories used when cataloguing the alba. Alba amicorum are catalogued on two levels: on a general level, i.e. the album as a whole is catalogued and in addition all the inscriptions in the album are cata-logued separately, the so-called leaf cataloguing. The study uses a comparative method. First the three scientific articles are compared with each other, then nine catalogues of alba amicorum from 1988 and onward, five printed and four online ones, are investigated regarding which categories are used respectively not used in the different catalogues. Then the categories pro-posed in the scientific articles are compared with the ones used in the catalogues. One result of the study is that the differences in the cataloguing on the general level between the printed catalogues are small but that the variation is larger amongst the online ones. The same patterns cannot be seen regarding the leaf cataloguing; here the variation between the catalogues is generally somewhat larger but the most central categories can be found in all catalogues. Another result is that some of the categories in the cata-logues reflect the printed or online form of the catalogue. The study shows that it is hard to define exactly which influence the scientific articles had on the catalogues but that it probably hasn’t been that large. Many of the categories occurring in the catalogues have been used when cataloguing alba amicorum since the early 1900’s. Maybe one could say that the alba themselves are con-stituted in such a way that it is more or less natural which categories should be used when cataloguing them. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Resumen
Chapter 5 recovers the contours of the manuscript economy in early modern India for texts in Sanskrit logic. It identifies the “reading community” as the primary unit of this economy. Then, it studies how these reading communities forge values and consumption priorities within themselves and across space; and stresses that the category of the court or polity is not useful in thinking through these issues. Instead, it argues that this space functioned and was sustained not by the court but on the basis of both intellectual and emotional relations between Sanskrit logicians and “the text” as these scholars responded to novelty in philosophical arguments. The arguments in this chapter are based on a survey of approximate 4,800 manuscripts listed in a number of manuscript surveys and catalogs.

Resumen
In 2003 the Veneto Regional Council set up a project to catalog all manuscript holdings in libraries in the Veneto region, in order to provide a freely accessible, uniform online open catalog (1) via shared cataloguing standards. The implementation of this project entailed coordinating its scientific and organizational aspects, as well as checking and revising the catalog descriptions. The Biblioteca del Museo Correr was in charge of coordinating the project, which had previously set up a cataloging project of its manuscript holdings in 2001, starting with its oldest holding, the Teodoro Correr collection. The coordinating team, composed of Paolo Eleuteri, Barbara Vanin and Francesco Bernardi, and later also Alessia Giachery, initially created a catalog data sheet model, which features a brief description that is suitable for the mainly modern material present in the libraries (2). It provides a brief codicological description and a more detailed description of the manuscripts contents. At the same time Guidelines for cataloging manuscripts (3) were set out, which provided the framework in terms of cataloging for the MANUS software system developed by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle biblioteche italiane. Together with the Veneto Regional Council an initial group of libraries of various typologies were selected, which completely lacked catalogs or adequate tools to access their manuscript holdings. They were asked to present targeted cataloging projects.

Resumen
It is estimated that India possesses more than five million manuscripts on varied subjects lying scattered or fragmented in India and foreign collections. This invaluable and unique pool of knowledge is under threat. Recognizing the need to encompass and preserve this knowledge resource and to make these accessible to scholars and researchers, Kala Nidhi Division of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) initiated a microfilming of manuscripts programme of private and public institutions in 1989. IGNCA has, so far, microfilmed over 250000 manuscripts in 20,600 microfilm rolls, out of that 14,400 rolls have been digitized. National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) established in February 2003 seeks to unearth and preserve the vast manuscript wealth of India. The digitization of over 25000 manuscripts under NMM, IGNCA and also under project mode by Cultural Informatics Laboratory (CIL), IGNCA makes largest repository of copies of manuscripts at IGNCA. Besides, IGNCA is also having a unique collection of 2500 rare books, about 1,0,5000 slides, 2000 paintings, 3000 photographs, more than 3000 hours of video recordings, art objects, 10 personal collections of eminent scholars such as Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee, Prof. Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan and Prof. Maheswar Neog, photo documentation work on Rock Art, and various museums in India etc. Many of these collections such as rare books, photographs etc are well covered and some are not covered under copyright laws. However, there are issues such as ownership rights, permission rights and access rights etc, which do not allow open access to these collections. As per the existing arrangements, consultation to all collections at IGNCA is allowed to all, 25% copies of the material are also allowed on cost basis. However, to get a copy of the material, user need to approach the concerned library (from where the copies have been obtained) to seek permission. This chapter attempts to describe factors considered as hindrance to providing access to Indian cultural heritage material. Lack of proper policy guidelines especially on copyright issues and intellectual property rights concerning both cultural heritage materials in original as well as in digital form are an obstacle. Open access initiatives worldwide are advocating access to even current information. Cultural heritage belongs to the humanity worldwide, therefore, access should be given to all. These issues, which may not be solved at individual level or institutional level, require debate, deliberations and formulation of policy framework at the highest level.

Resumen
This introductory chapter provides a brief overview of the transformation of the Arabo-Islamic intellectual tradition that accompanied the adoption of printing in the Middle East. It brings to light the stories of the hitherto mostly invisible individuals who effected this transformation. Their motivations, goals, and approaches were diverse. All had to contend with the formidable challenges posed by centuries of cultural neglect of the classical literature: locating and obtaining manuscripts in the absence of catalogs, piecing together complete works out of scattered fragments, deciphering texts in spite of errors and damage, and understanding their meaning without recourse to adequate reference material. Their painstaking, frequently solitary, and often innovative efforts opened up the narrow postclassical manuscript tradition into a broad literature of printed, primarily classical works—the literature that today can be considered the essential canon of Islamic texts.

Abstract This introduction to the concept of immaculate sounds lays out the issues involved with studying the music of New Spanish convents. It includes a listing of the known music manuscript sources that exist and discusses the preliminary studies that have attended to these sources in the form of performance editions and catalogs with respect to Latin American and New Spanish music studies, as well as New Spanish convent history more broadly. It argues that in addition to working with music manuscripts, one must draw from a wider network of sources, such as nuns’ devotional literature and biographies, to flesh out the history of nuns’ music making in New Spain. These latter sources evidence that music, sound, aurality, and orality within the convents were vital components of the liturgical and devotional lives of convents. It also presents a methodology, incorporating the concepts of women’s time and the acousmatic, for narrating a cultural history formed through fragments of archival material with various gaps.

Resumen
Abstract If your own library does not own the sources you’ve identified through subject heading searches, keyword searches, citation or related record searches, or those done through published bibliographies, there are three major resources that will usually enable you to identify which other libraries do own them. Beyond those three, however, thousands of other sources may be useful. The first place to look is the WorldCat database. It is available in the First Search system and now as a free-access site in Google and Yahoo. (It may soon be accessible through other Internet search engines.) The database itself is essentially the combined library catalogs of over 45,000 libraries in eighty-seven countries. It has over 52,000,000 records. In addition to books, it also records maps, prints, photographs, sound recordings, slides, newspapers, motion pictures, videotapes, manuscripts, recommended Web sites, and other formats. Whatever gets cataloged in any of the participating libraries winds up in the pot for everyone to search. For each item library locations are provided. (This database forms the basis for most interlibrary lending.) To get into this file in Google, use the advanced search page and specify the domain as “worldcatlibraries.org.”
