Resumen
Purpose – This paper examines the structure of Philippine historiography as viewed by Filipino historians. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the knowledge domain of Philippine history and in particular how its practitioners organize their field of study in terms of periodization. At the end of the paper an application of this analysis is proposed, the development of an online encyclopaedia of Philippine history. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were arranged with willing historians at two of the premier institutions of higher learning in the Philippines: the Ateneo de Manila and University of the Philippines. The historians were asked three general questions: what in their opinion, are the key defining events in Philippine history? What are the key historians for each of those events? And what are the key debates regarding these events? For the purpose of this paper it is the results of the first question that are in focus as it deals with one of the fundamental tools of historical analysis, periodization. Findings – Philippine history was found to be periodized in a variety of ways, from the traditional to other approaches that stress either Filipino rather than colonial agency or the uneven trajectories of historical development that depend on region, class, or language group. A final approach viewed Filipino history as a network of relations spanning space and time. Wikis designed around the results of domain analysis make it possible to provide information on topics of importance to a discipline as well as reveal something of its deeper structure. Combined with traditional concerns, such as use of appropriate sources, this would serve to help develop a deeper awareness of the nature of knowledge production. Originality/value – This paper represents both a contribution to the study of knowledge domains, as well as an application of that study to the work of information professionals. Putting the spotlight on Philippine historians and history also helps the LIS discipline to move away from its traditional North American and European focus. Studies of knowledge producing bodies in the rest of the world are important and overdue.

Resumen
Spanish conquest in the New World has two sides, evangelization, and colonization. The former was carried by the missionaries who were heavily influenced by Bartolome de Las Casa and Vitoria, while the latter by conquistadores, the defenders of the conquest. Early missionaries fought for the dignity of the Indios where they clashed with the motives of the conquistadores to exploit human resources. The problematic part was they have to work under the Spanish crown where their point of contact was also their area for friction. When they arrived in the Philippines, that social solidarity and dynamics of social relation continued where it became complex due to the involvement of various groups including the natives and their leaders, the religious orders, and most of all the Spanish Royal Court that had the history of having a heart for the Indians. King Philip II created a space for debates within his agenda of social conscience. Using Durkheim’s structuralist-functionalist approach, historical narratives about early missionaries’ struggles for natives’ dignity in the 16th century Philippines were examined. Durkheim’s social solidarity, dynamics of social relations, and his concepts of anomie as disruptions due to dramatic changes and conflicts were utilized as tools to analyze the quest for total well-being. The achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) is authenticated in amplifying the value of human dignity, equality, and respect for each individual. With this, the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines is worth the celebration.ReferencesAbella, G. (1971) From Indio to Filipino and some historical works. Philippine Historical Review. Resumen
This special issue is the outcome of a collaborative venture – a three-day workshop between La Trobe University and Ateneo de Manila University, held in Manila. It brought together indigenous and non-indigenous researchers from both the Philippines and Australia and included aboriginal researchers in business studies, history, literature and anthropology, and non-indigenous researchers working on themes of indigenous history, material culture, film studies, literature, the visual arts, law and linguistics. The ‘indigenous’ peoples of the Philippines are very different to Australian Aborigines or Torres Strait Islanders. Nevertheless, they have common quests for political autonomy, protection of indigenous customary laws, traditions and knowledge, biodiversity, and development of independent self-governance structures for health, education and community development. These concerns involve analogous and overlapping political struggles with nation-states and in the forums of the UN, regional associations, global consortia, and the international courts. The papers in this issue are based on a roundtable in which the participants showcased their own research projects and interests on indigenous pathways, cultural pluralism and national identities; socio-economic development; and representation of indigenous identities in creative and visual arts.

Resumen
This qualitative paper uses the multiple-case research design to explore the dissemination of researches at Ateneo de Manila University, the De La Salle University-Manila, the University of the Philippines Diliman, and the University of Santo Tomas. An interview schedule, pertinent documents, and records were used in data gathering. Purposeful sampling was employed in the selection of study units and key informants. Data were analyzed using explanation-building. Results reveal that research dissemination is a complex process largely affected by a university’s research culture. In general, the findings show that research is important in the four universities. All four universities articulate the value of research in their vision, mission, or goals, as well as maintain a university research coordinating office. However, research dissemination is not emphasized as an integral component of the universities’ research thrusts. The study identifies several economic and institutional concerns that need to be addressed so that research dissemination would occupy a prominent role in the universities’ research programs.

Resumen
In January 2021, Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade, Jr., spokesperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, issued a statement that 18 universities in the Philippines, including Far Eastern University, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, and Ateneo de Manila University – serve as recruiting grounds by the legal fronts of the Communist Party of the Philippines for the New People’s Army. In response to this, a joint statement was made reaffirming the universities’ commitment to defend democracy and nation-building, further reminding the government that autonomy and independence from the state must nonetheless be retained. Such conceptual discordance leads to issues that give rise to three philosophical endeavors, to wit: first, a pedagogical determination of the role of education as a vital catalyst of stability and change in contemporary times; second, a resolution of the possible human rights conflict between individual/ institutional academic freedom and the constitutional mandate of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to secure the integrity of the national territory; and third, a re-evaluation of the notion of academic activism and its relevance/ danger to the citizen’s adherence to the provisions of the Philippine Constitution. This paper will provide a commentary utilizing the philosophies of Habermas, Rawls, and Gewirth to serve as a guiding light in clarifying the intricate interplay between moral rights and duties in both education and law enforcement.

Resumen
Although the United States granted the Philippines formal independence in 1946, American influence in the former colony did not disappear overnight. In the decades following independence, American policymakers continued to play key roles in Philippine politics; American businessmen, presidents, legislators, and bureaucrats and US-based international money lending agencies continued to have a considerable impact on the Philippine economy; and American popular culture continued to penetrate Philippine society and culture (as it did elsewhere). But perhaps no sector of Philippine society was as profoundly influenced by Americans as the academic one, and no subdivision of the Philippine academy bore the American imprint as visibly as Philippine social science. This paper examines the academic career, writings, institution-building efforts, and scholarly agenda of the US-born scholar who arguably had the greatest impact on post-war Philip- pine social science: Father Frank Lynch, a Jesuit professor of anthropology and sociology at Ateneo de Manila University.

Resumen
Purpose – The concept of academic library consortium emerged in the Philippines in the 1970s evidenced by the successive establishment of three consortia namely, the Academic Libraries Book Acquisition Services Association (ALBASA) in 1973, the Inter-Institutional Consortium (IIC) (now South Manila Inter-Institutional Consortium) in 1974, and the Mendiola Consortium (MC) in 1975. This paper aims to find out the experiences and status of selected academic library consortia in the Philippines, namely, the Academic Libraries Book Acquisitions Systems Association, Inc. (ALBASA), the American Corners (also known as American Studies Resource Center (ASRC) in some areas), the Aurora Boulevard Consortium Libraries, Inc. (ABC), the Davao Colleges and University Network (DACUN), the Inter University Consortium (IUC), the Intramuros Library Consortium (ILC), the Mendiola Consortium (MC), the Ortigas Center Library Consortium (OCLC), and the South Manila Inter institutional Consortium (SMI-IC) specifically in terms of the objectives of the different consortia, the activities they undertake and how such relate to the set objectives, the benefits they have enjoyed or continue to enjoy, the issues they have encountered as well as success/failure factors experienced by libraries in joining the different consortia. Design/methodology/approach – The sample was derived from the review of literature, which also served as basis to come up with the list of existing academic library consortia. The respondents were selected based on the Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL) directory. Communication was sent via email, telephone, scheduled personal interview and social networking sites (e.g. Facebook). A total of 13 out of 23 (56.52 percent) respondents accomplished the survey questionnaires which were distributed online and manually. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the results. Findings – Results of the study revealed that the role academic library consortia play in the development of academic libraries is crucial particularly in the promotion of professional development and resource sharing. As technology greatly influences the way libraries do things, the varying level of technological development among consortium member libraries confirmed to be a major challenge being faced by them today. While majority of the surveyed consortia assessed themselves to be successful, it is evident that there is lack of congruence between the consortia's objectives and undertakings. Originality/value – The paper is a modest contribution to the dearth of literature in Philippine academic library consortia. It also is the first study conducted measuring the success of selected academic consortia and identifying the factors contributing to their success/failure.

Resumen
Censorship notwithstanding, the final half-century of Spanish rule in the Philippines was a time of efflorescence in colonial print culture. Between the advent of typo-lithography in 1858 and the successive occurrence, in 1896 and 1898, of the Filipino revolution and the Spanish-American War, printing presses operating in Manila and beyond issued thousands of books and periodicals, the first public library, the Muséo-Bibliotéca de Filipinas, opened its doors in 1887, and the importation of books from Europe and America could scarcely keep pace with demand.

Resumen
This article will explore the library of the most important of the 16th century Manila based Augustinians, fray Martin de Rada, a well known cosmographer, mathematician and astronomer. After spending more than five years in Mexico, and ten in the Philippines, in 1575 he was assigned to the first Spanish expedition to China and wrote a highly influential Relación about it. From his own letters —14 of them extant—, the letters of his contemporaries about Rada —from Manila, Mexico and Spain—, and the Relación of his fellow traveler to China, Miguel de Loarca, we are able to disentangle his main intellectual interests and the contents of his library: what he wrote —both in Mexico and Asia—, the significance of the scientific works that he took with him to Asia, the importance of the Chinese maps with which he worked while in Manila —before and after his travel to China—, what books he bought in China and what use did he make of them, and the last works in which he was working before his death. This gives Rada a strong intellectual profile that has to be compared with that of his contemporary, the Jesuit Matteo Ricci.

Resumen
Purpose The advent and wide use of new digital technologies suggests that the internet is becoming a powerful new media for the imagination of city space. If this is the case then issues concerning urban representation on social media platforms such as Wikipedia provide an area of overlap and interest between urban studies and information studies. The purpose of this paper is to examine the representation of Manila, Philippines, one of the world’s major mega cities, on the popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Design/methodology/approach The author’s broad approach to the study of Wikipedia is qualitative in nature. For this study the entire Metro Manila article was downloaded on March 16, 2015 and subjected to textual analysis. Findings While the Wikipedia article on Manila cannot be classified as promotional, it is clear that much of the city remains invisible in this work. Such a puzzle becomes understandable when we examine the urban studies literature where we find that the spatial logic of the city itself helps conceal much from view, so that what we read on Wikipedia is a view from the islands of privilege rather than the oceans of marginalization that make up much of the city’s spatial form. If such a spatial structure is to change, representations such as found on Wikipedia need to be challenged. Originality/value Wikipedia is a key element of today’s information infrastructure yet despite its importance it remains relatively understudied within the field of information science. More specifically, the role of Wikipedia in representing cities, the dominant settlement form in the world today, has not been previously studied.

Resumen
This study aims to Analysis Of Islamic Education Policy: Philippines Case Study. This research includes qualitative research. The approach used is pure library research (library research). Data obtained from reading materials obtained by researchers from books, articles contained in print. Data were collected and sorted to fill in the answers to the formulated research questions. The analysis uses a content analysis approach that is adapted to the need to develop historical linkages and the dynamic context of madrasas in the Philippines. The conclusion of this study is that Islam in the Philippines has experienced ups and downs from a religion that was once great marked by the presence of Islamic empires such as Manila, Manguindanau and Sulu to become minority groups caused by colonialism carried out by Spain, America and Japan. Islamic education policies in the Philippines, the Philippine government is trying to include an Islamic education system such as madrasas in the national education system, accommodation for madrasa education in the Philippine education system has begun to progress since the Philippine government adopted DO 51 which includes teaching Arabic and Islamic values in public schools, and testing the standard curriculum or what is often called the Standard Madrasa Curricula (SMC) in private madrasas; The impact of Islamic education policies in the Philippines, namely the Philippine government in developing madrasa education, has learned a lot from the development of madrasas in Indonesia.

Resumen
Many cities in the world were placed under various lockdowns to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which also forced many schools to shift into full online mode of teaching and learning. In the Philippines, partial onsite classes only resumed after nearly 2 years of strict online classes. Of critical concern then was the teaching of laboratory courses. This necessitated the re-design of the usual laboratory experiments to a Lab@Home course to provide a semester’s worth of an organic laboratory course to college students of the Ateneo de Manila University. Here, we present a Lab@Home curriculum that covers core organic chemistry concepts, such as purification and separation of organic compounds, reactivity and qualitative tests, stereochemistry, and molecular spectroscopy (IR and NMR). This Lab@Home course involved sending boxed kits containing laboratory materials and reagents that allowed students at home to perform small-scale experiments. Aside from reinforcing key concepts in the accompanying lecture class, it also provided them with experiential learning of practical laboratory techniques such as setting up an experiment and real data collection. Safety first is maintained, and aside from providing the usual protective gear, safety is further assured with two important features: (1) the hazards classification of the reagents in the kit would not exceed the everyday life hazards of common household chemicals (e.g., kitchen cleaning reagents) and provided in very small amounts, and (2) running of experiments were done with online synchronous supervision majority of the time. The success of the course is the achievement of the CLOs, from the assessments as well as from feedback taken from surveys and interviews with students and instructors at the end of the semester. Overall student performance showed an average final grade of 85%, and student response to the curriculum was generally positive. Further improvements should be implemented to make experiments more enriching and ensure Lab@Home can become an effective tool for teaching remote laboratory classes.

Resumen
The first part of this paper draws the lessons for flood management from the experience of the recent major flooding events of 2009 TS Ketsana (Ondoy), 2009 TS Panna (Peping) in Luzon, and the adverse impacts of 2011 TS Sendong on Visayas and Mindanao. NDRRMC data are analyzed in terms of the relative intensities and distribution of population impacts (killed, injured, missing) and economic damages reported among the different storms and regions of impacts. The paper emphasizes the need for implementing structural mitigation measures in poor unprotected towns and regions in the country, as part of an adaptation strategy, under the challenge and threat posed by growing population and anticipated climate change. Likewise, non-structural mitigation measures (which have shorter gestation periods of months and few years only, compared to decades for major structural measures) must also be provided under the imperative or necessity implied by the quantified "structural gap" of existing structures to adequately reduce and effectively manage the increasing flood hazard risks caused by growing population and climate change. In the second part of this paper dealing with water supply and sewerage (sanitation), recent NEDA and ADB reports were cited which make very clear the necessity that the Philippines has to achieve a faster rate of providing access to improved sanitation facilities, at a rate at par with that of providing access to improved drinking water, in the quest of the country to attain the "early achiever" status before 2015 in both water supply and sanitation targets. After all, the improvement of water supply facilities brings in the potential for producing higher volumetric rates of wastewater. The needs for wastewater treatment (and possible reuse of treated water) are met in the medium term by septage truck-collection and septage plant treatment (in Metro Manila, for example), but better in the longer term with piped sewerage collection networks and sewage treatment plants in both developed and developing communities and towns nation-wide. It is strongly recommended that new programs and projects in water supply development be accompanied with parallel and coupled sewerage (sanitation) programs and projects. This two-part article deals with the two important sub-sectors of the water sector: namely, flood control & drainage (flood management), on one hand, and water supply & sewerage (or sanitation) on the other hand. The article aims to explain and share with the general reading public the results of a long series of round-table discussions (RTDs), research studies, and annual scientific meetings held in the period 2009-2012, organized by the National Academy of Science & Technology (NAST) of the Philippines in pursuit of its policy-making and advisory mission and function to the nation. These fora and activities were done also with the cooperation and support of the UNESCO National Commission, national government agencies (NGAs such as NEDA, NWRB, DPWH, DENR and DOST), NGCCs (MWSS, water districts, etc.), NGOs (PWP and professional societies), the academe (UP Diliman, Mapua (MIT) and Manila Observatory-Ateneo), and representatives of certain LGUs and the private sector (such as MWCI, MWSl, and consulting firms). In addition lo the consensus established and recommended in the various water fora, the personal views and recommendations of the author are also indicated where they help in clarification of issues or demonstration of solutions. The other major sub-sectors of irrigation, hydropower and other water uses may be covered in future articles by other writers among the academicians of NAST.
