Resumen
Set during a 1987 police crackdown on protestors challenging the discriminatory policies of the Malaysian government, Malaysian Chinese author Xiao Hei’s “A Literary Record of October 27 and Other Things” (1989) uses postcolonial Malaysia’s thirtieth national anniversary to reflect upon institutionalized ethnolinguistic minoritization. Through intertextual citation, Xiao Hei’s novella not only constitutes a collaborative historical record ofMa Hua(Malaysian Chinese/Sinophone Malaysian) literature, but also a polyvocal interrogation of its own ethnolinguistic literary taxonomy. Xiao Hei’s strategic representation of Malaysia as historical experience, contested polity, claimed nation, and rejected state apparatus exposes how the ethnolinguistic taxonomy reinforces national estrangement. Drawing from Kuan-hsing Chen’s proposal of “Asia as method,” this chapter argues that Malaysia in Xiao Hei’s novella alternatively functions as a mediating site for the decolonization of Malaysian national literature’s ethnolinguistic basis as well as the deimperialization of an overseas Chinese literary framework prioritizing ethnicity/language over locality.

Aljunied, Khairudin. Islam in Malaysia. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190925192.001.0001.

Texto completo
Resumen
Islam has maintained its presence in Malaysia for over a millennium, giving rise to highly pluralized and complex communities. In this richly textured portrait, Khairudin Aljunied explores the overlapping waves of Islamization and conversion in Malaysia across ten centuries, through the Hindu-Buddhist period, the age of Muslim kingdoms, the colonial interregnum, and the contemporary era. The book offers a new approach to studying Malaysian Islam—entwined history—that will be useful for scholars specializing in historical Islam in other contexts. It is an approach that considers how states and societies, scholars and ordinary Muslims, and, more crucially, non-Muslims have all contributed to the embedding of Islam in the everyday lives of Malaysians. Providing a gripping and sophisticated account of these various driving forces, Aljunied also explores the roles of global movements and currents of thought, offering perceptive insights into how local actors appropriated and reinterpreted a world religion to suit their unique customs and circumstances. Islam in Malaysia: An Entwined History is at once an original and an authoritative take on the manner in which Islam has been infused, lived, expressed, enforced, and debated in one of the world’s most developed Muslim-dominated nations.

Abdul Hamid, Norsiah y Halimah Badioze Zaman. The perspective of knowledge society in Malaysia. UUM Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.32890/9789670876375.

Texto completo
Resumen
The Perspective of Knowledge Society in Malaysia presents the state-of-the-art of the concept of Knowledge Society. In particular, the focus is given to the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS), the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. The discussions are not only focusing on the Malaysias perspective, but also on the global initiatives to achieve the KS.The importance of knowledge and the rapid advancement of ICT were among the contributing factors towards the agenda. This book is a result of a doctoral research which aimed to develop and validate a model and indicators of a Knowledge Society from the Malaysian perspective. It examined the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS) and validated the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. To date, there is lack of available definition of KS in Malaysia, as well as in other developing countries; lack of consensus in terms of KS dimensions; lack of KS indicators and the need for a holistic model of KS.Thus, the research involves the analysis of the concept and definition of KS, and the development of a model of KS comprising significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context.A mixed approach methodology known as the Iterative Triangulation method was adopted which involved three phases. Thus, a number of experts were involved and in-depth analyses were conducted to achieve the objectives. This book may be used by policy makers to plan the development of a KS to meet the goals to be a developed nation by the year 2020.
