Resumen
Malays are one of several local ethnicities who inhabit the island of Kalimantan. Malay architecture can be linked to elements of customs, culture, and tradition that develop within the growth of ethnicity toward community development. Furthermore, many reports found that the characteristics of the environment and the settlements' location make a difference in the Malay house's traditional architecture on the island of Kalimantan. The study identifies some differentiation by the effects of cultural factors in each area of traditional architecture, affecting the architectural elements. The influences to Malay architecture are found differences by each region's customs, culture, and tradition. The Malays' customs, culture, and tradition greatly influence Malays houses' architecture because the culture is robust. This influence has made the customs, culture, and tradition become an obligation embedded in every Malay society. The embedded influences to the traditional Malay houses are found in the orientation of the openings, spatial arrangement, structure, and construction. The factor of being a Malay makes people attaching a unique meaning to the architecture of a traditional Malay house. The meanings follow the belief in environmental conditions and simplicity in Islamic teachings in traditional houses.

Resumen
Turkey is the heir to the Ottoman Islamic Caliphate, extending significant influence on Muslims worldwide. All aspects of the Turkish socio-culture will, directly and indirectly, influence the socio-culture of Muslims. This situation also applies to Muslims in Malaysia, specifically Malays. The influences range from political and administrative to cultural and artistic, and even the way of thinking. Research and analysis conducted towards the writings and historical texts proved that Turkish influence exists in the Malay world. For example, there is a Malay state administration modelled from the Ottoman Caliphate to advance it to synchronise with modern changes in the West. During the 1930s, Turkey’s modernisation drew Malay intellectuals’ attention, spreading the ideas through writing in newspapers and magazines. Developments in Turkey exposed the Malays to various polemics resulting from Kemal’s modernisation and secularisation when he led the Turkish government. For Malays, events in Turkey serve as lessons in their effort to develop their community towards progress in all aspects. Development in Turkey has also attracted various newspapers and magazines like ‘Pengasoh’, ‘Al-Ikhwan’, ‘Malaya’, ‘Majalah Guru’, ‘Al-Hedayah’, ‘Bahtra’ and ‘Saudara’. They celebrated Kemal establishing the Turkish republic and its various modernisation plans. Turkish influence was also pervasive in filmmaking, therefore, proving developments in Turkey influence various aspects of the Malay world. This study examined editorials in one of Malaysia's Malay newspapers, the Utusan Malaysia, from 1981 to 1987, during Mahathir's premiership. The study specifically examined the influence of Mahathirism on Utusan Malaysia's editorials on government policies. The theoretical framework of Reese's hierarchy of influences served as the foundation for this study. This qualitative study utilised retrospective in-depth interviews with key personnel of Utusan Malaysia as its methodology to answer the research questions. This study found no compelling evidence of direct or overt influence of Mahathirism on the editorials. What the study discovered was the chief editor, Zainuddin Maidin (ZAM)'s enthusiasm for Mahathir's thinking and his conviction that this Prime Minister possessed the courage to carry out his promises of a modernised and prosperous Malaysia and a greater share of the economy for Malays. The editorials demonstrate that he shared Mahathir's concerns about how Malaysia should be developed and how the Malay agenda and increased economic representation for the Malay community should be accomplished. We find in the editorials, not verbatim echoes of Mahathir’s thoughts and ideas, but ZAM’s original thinking about Malaysian nationalism, the Malay agenda and the assertion of Malaysian sovereignty in the face of Western dominance. Many of these ideas are reflected in what is conveniently called Mahathirism. By personal choice ZAM became UMNO's (United Malays National Organization) official spokesman and the journalist, who through his own thinking and unique perspectives on government policies, emphasised Mahathir's political and economic objectives for Malaysia, as well as Mahathir's emphasis on the Malay agenda, as the intellectual basis for his pro-Mahathir editorials. Utusan editorials are primarily influenced by ZAM's thinking and his commitment to Mahathirism or aspects of it.

Abstract: Over the years, there are various research on cultural development seen from socio-historical perspective. The uniqueness of Islam in Malay region as it is diverse and open to outside influences is important to be look at; as it differs greatly from “the Islam” that have been practiced in the Middle East. Based on the discussions, the ulemas or Muslim clerics of this region and the Malays themselves have already practiced the supra-madhhab model as proposed by many contemporary scholars. Using Shia influences in the Malay culture, this paper attempt to show how sectarianism within Islam was never entertained by the Muslims in this region. In fact, Shi’ism was so embedded in Malay culture. Although being dominated by Sunnism, most of the Shia doctrines and pillars were widely accepted and embraced. The axiology of Shi’ism in Malay culture reflected in many religious texts, classical literature and cultural events. However, as sectarianism rising in this region, the Shia influence and its axiology slowly eroded and were victimized by unnecessary foreign interventions.

The origin of Malay language, culture and literature often being debated due to different reasons and interests. Some argued there are similarities between the Malay’s practices, words and literature influences to the Hindus as well as Buddhists while some strongly refuted, saying that all aspect are solely influenced by Islamic traits. This research was carried out to prove that Islamization serves as the key factor in the Malay society’s transformation particularly in terms of language, literature and culture. It is in accordance with a Western Philosopher’s ideology, "a revolution from within" which stated that the Malay’s strength was not attributed to its race, culture and literature, but it is because of Islam. The research methodology used encompasses the literature review and analysis of information obtained from previous studies. The data findings revealed that there were indeed Hinduism and Buddhism in the Malay Peninsula particularly and the Malay Archipelago however the arrival of Islam has resulted in numerous changes in the traditional Malay society. The religion introduced a new system of law and values, thus resulting in a significant transformation in the Malay worldview. Perhaps the most noticeable change it caused was the emergence and development of the Malay language and literature. Islam's arrival has also led to other cultural shifts in the Malay Archipelago from various aspects, for instance the learning development that was mostly driven by the introduction of the religion's holy scripture known as Quran which was written in the Arabic language. Following Islamization, the Malay society learned recitation of the Quran to enable them to perform prayers and other religious rituals. Conversion to Islam involving all Malays in the Malay peninsula occurred without disrupting the harmony among the societies. In the political aspect, Islamization has brought about a new system of law and government.

The spread of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago not only influences social change, but also on language development. One of the languages used in the archipelago at this time is Malay language. Malay language is a global language and plays a major role in the spread of Islam. Arabic and Malay language have the same position in generating language contact. These occurrence in language contact present a balance of two languages which results in the exchange of both language. This discussion is written in descriptive method. In addition, this discussion explains the influence of Islam on the development of Malay language and the Islamization of its language which then changed the Malay peoples perspective on life in accordance with the Islamic views and provided an enormous role in the development of Islam in Malay Country.

The beauty of poetry is influenced by the choice of words expressed in the style of any languages. There are influences of Arabic language and literature in the Malay world. In addition, most of studies on Malay literature text are using western theories. Therefore, this study attempts to examine the appropriateness of the use of ‘Ilm al-Bayan which is a form of Arabic Rhetoric in analyzing Malay poetry texts. The library approach is used in this study. The choice of this approach is to gather information related to ‘Ilm al-Bayan. Descriptive analysis approach is used to analyze the information gathered to see suitability of the Arabic style that used in assessing the Malay literature texts. The study found that there are similarities between the functions ‘Ilm al-Bayan with Malay rhetoric, although the terms of each of these languages are different. It is certainly based on the expression of the original speakers of the language, whether in Arabic or Malay literatures.

ABSTRACTThis article follows the development of Malay from prehistorical times to the present. After a brief overview of the variety of languages in Southeast Asia and Oceania, the position of Malay within the Austronesian language family is discussed as well as the Malay homeland. The history of Malay is followed throughout its most important stages, from the period of the oldest written evidence in the late 7th century AD to the age of the Malaccan sultanate in the 15th-16th centuries, the colonial period in which Malay became the most important language in all domains of public life except in the highest echelons, and the present post-independence period in which Malay has become the national language in four states of Southeast Asia. Attention is also given to sociolinguistic differentiation, to foreign influences, to the engineering planning and manipulation of Malay in recent times and to its role as a vehicle for the spread of several religions and foreign (Indian, Mid-eastern, European) cultural influences.

This study is conducted to observe how language element gives impact to the integration of the Siamese and Malay communities in Kampung Keluang. The study is done by applying two techniques of data collection through fieldwork, namely join observation and thematic interview with the villagers in Kampung Keluang which consist of the Malays and Siamese, besides some other noteworthy individuals. The research findings showed the Siamese community use Malay language as their main language in daily undertakings and their fluency in in using the language has become an element that fosters their integration with the surrounding Malay community. Nevertheless, Siamese language is kept preserved as an identity of the Siamese through informal approach such as the socialization of parents towards their children. Preservation of the Siamese identity through their mother-tongue apparently has not given any repercussion towards integration process of the society in Kampung Keluang. The sharing of language with similar dialect, with the Malay community by the Siamese community proved that they have shared a comparable code system when interacting and it has given positive impact to the social integration in Kampung Keluang.

The art of traditional Malay massage is one element of local wisdom that should be given more attention. Various external influences increasingly taint such massages in Malaysia and to some extent changed the art itself. This study, therefore, aimed to identify the local community’s acceptance of traditional Malay massage and their openness in embracing local arts. The study also sought the public view on the future of traditional Malay massage. The paper, supported by the concept of human nature by Rousseau (1967), also collected responses from 200 respondents of various backgrounds through the distribution of online questionnaires. The study found that the traditional arts still have a place amongst the Malay community. Besides, it was proven that elements of external influences had been observed in traditional Malay massage. The implications of the study indicate that a concerted effort needs to be made to preserve this heritage art in order for it to remain relevant and produce more practitioners. When researching the catalogues about Malay manuscripts at the library of Leiden University, Netherlands, there was a list of records about Turkey and Malaya’s relations in various manuscript collections in the library. This is important to be highlight to see how far the two empires’ relationship are in Malay manuscripts. Thus, this writing will analyze the Turkish Empire’s influence towards the Malay government in various aspects. The analyze will using the selected Malay manuscripts through the Leiden University Library collection. Qualitative content analysis methods will use to examine the topics. The expectation of writing shows that there are significant influences towards the Malay government, especially about lineage and politics. This writing will directly contribute to the studies on international relations between the Turkish Empire and Malay government and highlight the way the government practiced by the Islamic government in maintaining the relationship as stated in the Malay manuscript.

Abstrak Agama dan kebudayaan merupakan bagian penting dalam kehidupan manusia. Adakalanya agama dipengaruhi kebudayaan atau sebaliknya kebudayaan yang dipengaruhi agama. Masuknya Islam ke tanah Melayu memberikan pengaruh terhadap corak kebudayaan dan pemikiran Melayu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji nilai-nilai Islam yang terdapat dalam teks Tunjuk Ajar Melayu dengan menggunakan pendekatan strukturalis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam Tunjuk Ajar Melayu terdapat nasihat, pesan, pikiran dan gagasan untuk memegang teguh Islam dalam kehidupan orang Melayu. Dalam Tunjuk Ajar Melayu diungkapkan posisi adat dan syarak, Islam sebagai identitas orang Melayu, anjuran bertakwa kepada Allah, Islam untuk pembentukkan karakter anak dan persiapan menuju akhirat. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Islam sangat berpengaruh dalam pembentukan pemikiran Melayu sehingga Islam dianggap sebagai identitas utama orang Melayu. --- Abstract Religion and culture are important in human life. Sometimes, a religion is influenced by culture or in any case culture is influenced by religion. The coming of Islam to Malay land influenced on the characteristic of Malay culture and minds. This research aims to analyze the Islamic values on text of “Tunjuk Ajar Melayu” by using structuralis approach. Findings of research show that “Tunjuk Ajar Melayu” consist of advices, messages, thoughs, and ideas to keep Islam in the life of Malay people. It expresses the position of “adat” and “syarak”, Islam as identity of Malay people, messages of devoting to Allah, Islam to build the children character and preparation toward hereafter. This research concludes Islam greatly influences in building Malay culture and minds, and therefore Islam is regarded as main identity for Malay people.

Muhammad Haji Salleh is a famous Malaysian poet laureate as well as a foremost post-colonial intellectual. This article is a critical analysis of the persona and vision of the poet in his quest to construct his identity and to sustain the Malay language and literary heritage, as may be understood from his works and efforts since the 1970s. It is an expose of a laureate’s motivations behind his creativity. In dealing with Muhammad’s literary corpus, the article adopts a multi- and cross-disciplinary approach in combining literary criticism with elements of psychoanalysis, philosophy, politics, etc. These elements encapsulate the post-colonial quest of identity-forming, a subject that lies at the core of this article. The “empire writes back” perspective allows an in-depth analysis of motivation, migration and identity-formation as a way to reclaim resources –both tangible and intangible– from the colonisers. Thus, the discussion critically presents insights into the contexts and influences on Muhammad’s works, and in turn, his role in sustaining the Malay language and literary heritage. By the age of 6 months old, the early production of language begins. Starting from this age, children will be able to use more than one word and they will be able to relate one word to another in creating sentences or phrases to convey meaning. For bilingual children, it is common for them to mix up words between two languages in their utterances. However, they are still able to make a distinction. Thus, this study presents an observation of the author on the syntactic awareness of a Malay child who was acquiring Malay at the same time as she was acquiring English and how different environments influenced the subject’s syntactic development. In addition, the cognitivist theory by Noam Chomsky will be discussed in view of explaining the significance of environmental influences as the main variable of this study.

Malay (Rumi) is alphabetic and has a transparent, agglutinative system of affixation. We manipulated language-specific junctural phonetics in Malay and English to investigate whether morphophonemic L1-knowledge influences L2-processing. A morpheme decision task, “Does this <nonword> sound like a mono- or bi-morphemic English word?”, was developed by crossing English Transitional Probability (high vs. low) with Malay Transitional Possibility (possible vs. impossible). The data for Malay-L1/English-L2 adults (N = 21) provide clear and reliable empirical evidence of L1-to-L2 morphophonemic transfer: Participants were more accurate at identifying transitional boundaries in English when they are also possible in Malay. Pedagogical implications are discussed.

This article reports an in-depth study on early childhood care in Sambas Malay Muslim family. This research incorporated a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through observations and interviews with parents and Sambas local figures. The findings indicate the influence of local culture and religious values on Sambas Muslim parenting style. More specifically, this study showed that parenting practices of Muslim Sambas Malay parents are carried out through the tradition of pantang larang and kemponan. Pantang larang and kemponan become parts of collective memory so that they become social educative traditions in early childhood care in the Muslim Sambas Malay family.

In the mid-20th century, it is noteworthy that Malay popular music composed in this era was heavily influenced by various stylistic and cultural musical forms of both the traditional Malay styles such as asli, inang, joget, zapin and even keroncong, and also by Western idioms and styles. Branded as jazz ballads in the Mid-20th Century, Malay popular music is a key subject in unveiling the musical changes in the Malay popular music history of Peninsula Malaysia. In the 1960s, there was a trend to compose Malay popular music with heavily influenced idiomatic jazz harmonics in the many various Western styles. In the early 21st century, as it has musically and stylistically evolved, Malay popular music became closely associated with the continuous dissemination of patriotic songs in Malaysia as well as an amalgamation of the various trending styles of the Western hemisphere such as funk, pop, rhythm and blues, gospel and even rock music. Throughout it all, the continued and consistent harmonics of Jazz Music have been an ever-present tool for many Malay Popular Music composers since the early years of independence. This paper will focus on four chosen compositions, two from each of the time frames in focus and each tune will have an analysis from a singular compositional viewpoint, be it melodic (Gema Rembulan-Jimmy Boyle, 1956), chordal (Air Mata Berderai-Alfonso Soliano,1964) or the dissertation of the song-form (Selingkuh Kasih-Mokhzani Ismail,2006 & Gemilang-Aubrey Suwito,2005). Through the analysis of the chosen musical scores, this paper intends to reintroduce and refresh the essential elements of composing a Malay Popular Music composition as well as the musical influences and changing mindsets of approach on the different compositional styles of Malay popular music, its culture, and identity, of the mid-20th and the early 21st centuries of Malaysia to the current and future composers of this genre.

The Malay cartoons that air on Indonesian television channels are now popular among children in Indonesia. The shows Upin & Ipin, Boboboi, and Pada Zaman Dahulu are especially popular with Acehnese children. Initial observations found that these cartoons have played a great role in the increased use of contemporary Malay in their Indonesian. Thus, this study discusses the cross-linguistic influences of Malay from cartoons in Indonesian children’s language use in the home domain. Data were collected through recordings and field notes. Some steps based on the framework by Lacey and Luff (2007) were taken to analyze the data. The results were transcribed and sifted to distinguish the significant data. The recording and its transcription were then re-checked. The last step was categorizing the data into cross-linguistic influences based on Ringbom (1987). These influences include borrowing, hybrids, phonetic influence, and relexification. The results showed the presence of only two aspects of cross-linguistic influences: borrowing and phonetic influences. Borrowing was the most frequent aspect, followed by phonetic influence. Relexification and hybrid did not appear in the data. Nevertheless, there were other cross-linguistic aspects that were found in the data, including intonation, parenthetic remark, and interjection. In the broad-spectrum, the initial mimic on the Malay cartoon characters has expanded to employment in the language use of the children while speaking Indonesian. This study is expected to contribute in some ways or another towards the development of sociolinguistics, especially in cross-linguistic influence in children’s language use. Indonesia and Malaysia are neighboring countries, and language contact between the two countries is inevitable and evident. Hence, the study on the influences can benefit sociolinguistics, especially when investigating language change in the future.

The connection between language and culture becomes increasingly evident when the Thai language influences the variations of Jawi Malay dialects in Narathiwat. This research aims to analyze the impact of Thai language interference on the dialectal variations of Malay language in Narathiwat, Thailand, using a sociolinguistic approach. We investigate changes in language, including vocabulary usage, phonological shifts, and social influences in the everyday situations of Narathiwat society. Teachers and students use Ambonese Malay in learning Indonesian because learning a second language is inseparable from knowledge of the first language mastered by early childhood. This study aims to determine the effect of using Ambonese Malay on Indonesian language learning in early childhood education. This research is a sociolinguistic study to describe the phenomenon of language use. This study's results indicate three influences of the use of Ambonese Malay on students' learning of Indonesian. First, Ambonese Malay has a role as a 'language transfer tool' for children learning to understand a second language, namely Indonesian. Second, it is easy for the teacher to teach Indonesian to children because they can use Ambonese Malay vocabulary as the language of instruction to help students understand what the teacher means by learning Indonesian. Third, students gain knowledge of Indonesian vocabulary through the Ambonese Malay used by students and teachers in class.

This study aims to reveal the deep structure of the Sirkus Pohon novel by Andrea Hirata which reflects the structure of the author's society. Using the Levi-Strauss structuralism approach, this qualitative descriptive research confirms nothing empirically visible but behind ideas. The main data of this study were obtained from the Sirkus Pohon novel written by Andrea Hirata, and the ethnographic data of the Belitung community as support. The analysis results show that there is a structure behind the novel that leads to the existence of pairs between one element and another. A connecting element bridges these two opposing elements, and the positional triangle or classification structure of forms three. This structure refers to the representation of the cultural structure of the author's society which is transformed into the socio-cultural phenomenon of the society, namely the religious phenomenon, which reflects the liminality of the Belitung Malay society. The structure of the Belitung Malay culture is unconsciously influences the way Belitung Malays think, act, and believe.

The research method used is historical research methods through library and archive research. It turned out that the Ancient Minangkabau Malay Kingdom had opened cultural relations with India so that there were Hindu and Buddhist influences in Sumatra.

The main objective of this study is to identify the similarities and differences between Malay and Tamil tradition of shadow-play. The design of this study is qualitative in nature using descriptive analysis methods based on Comparative literature theory. The researcher had collected and studied the similarities and differences in the Malay and Tamil tradition shadow-play. The findings of the study show that Malay and Tamil tradition of shadow-play have significant similarities in terms of story and form of puppets as the shadow-play in Malaysia have Hindu influences from Java or Pattani. However, many Malay shadow-plays have also been adapted and adopted to the culture and tastes of the local community, especially with the comic relief, that is often found throughout the Malay tradition of the shadow-play, as a local element. This comparative study will further strengthen the links between the Malay and Tamil communities that have co-existed for generations. The research claims to be the first such attempt to do a comparative study in finding the similarities and differences between Malay and Tamil tradition of shadow-play.

Malay Architecture is one of the architectures that developed in Medan City and its surroundings. Malay ethnicity has existed and developed in this area marked by the presence of the Deli Malay Sultanate whose Kingdom capital is in Medan. With the existence of this Sultanate, the existence of Malay architecture is getting stronger and influencing the community, especially for the Malay community. This article aims to look at the development of Malay architecture nowadays with various influences that come from everywhere. This influence is certainly related to the form of this building which changes follow the times. Observation locations are in Medan and its surrounding areas, namely Langkat and Serdang Bedagai. Qualitative methods are used to see physical facts in the field which are corroborated by the questionnaire as a form of respondents’ expressions. The results obtained are some changes to the building caused by the variety of activities owned by residents of the house so that it requires space that affect the changes in the form and function of the building. Overall, the building owner still maintains the characteristics of Malay traditional architecture, especially the use of ornaments or decoration on the building.

Bahasa Indonesia, which is the national and official language in Indonesia, is the result of the development of the High Malay Language (High Malay) in Riau. As the language used in the literature published by Balai Pustaka, the High Malay is respected as a language that is higher; than other languages used by the people of the Archipelago in the period before Indonesian independence in 1945. One of the lower languages is Low Malay Language (Low Malay). Some literary works written in this language were printed by printing presses belonging to individuals consisting of indigenous and Chinese groups. The Low Malay style was used in writing romance to make the stories feel more alive. This language of conversation should be counted as one type of language that contributes to the Indonesian language. The range of its uses is vast. However, with the development of politics in Indonesia, the Low Malay is once again marginalized. The language now only lives in conversation, yet it remains alive and developed along with the development of the times and the many influences of foreign languages on Indonesian language.

This study aims to analyze the perceptions and preferences of the Malay community towards Islamic banking and examine the opportunities and challenges of Islamic banking in maintaining its credibility. This research method is carried out with a quantitative descriptive approach through a survey of 100 respondents. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling through the distribution of google forms. The study results indicate that the development of the number of customers of Islamic banks has indeed increased. However, compared to conventional banks, it still dominates the number of customers who save in conventional banks even though the Malay community, which is predominantly Muslim, should be the dominant interest in Islamic banks. There are various perceptions of the Malay community towards Islamic banking. Some Malay people think that Islamic banks are stated in a profit-sharing manner the same as conventional banks, with the term interest only differing in mentioning term. Due to the lack of promotion, many Malay people still use conventional banks for economic transactions. Human resources management influences the perception of the Malay community towards Islamic banking.

From the mid-1920s, Indian music scenes developed in Singapore that were not just about the construction of regional and religious forms of Indian diasporic belonging. Drawing upon European, Chinese and Malay influences (musical and otherwise), and performing in contexts that were uncommon in India, Singaporean Indian musicians contributed to non-Indian musics, while incorporating non-Indian influences into Indian genres. Such musical–communal interactions functioned in colonial Singapore to locate the island as a hub for the constitution of a ‘Malayan Indian sonic geography’. By encouraging links between various Indian and other communities throughout the peninsula via radio, films, recordings, touring networks, and performances at hotels and amusement parks, music became a means for Indian communication and integration in colonial Malaya — a sonic geography that would be significantly transformed, though not eliminated, after Singapore and Malaysia parted ways in 1965.

Before 1965, Malay literature in Singapore and Malaysia was a single, shared entity. In fact, for a while, Singapore was one of the major centres of literary development, particularly through the endeavors of authors in Angkatan Sasterawan `50 (Asas 50) and friends in media and film. Singapore’s withdrawal from Malaysia in 1965 was an event that brought major changes, especially for Malay literature in Singapore. However, as this article hopes to show, although the split gave rise to far-reaching influences and two different socio- political ecospheres, activists of Malay language and literature in Singapore have persevered. Along with Malaysian activists and institutions, they continued to develop and enrich a shared Malay literature. For this purpose, the article will study historical developments in Singapore and Malaysia since 1965, particularly the diligent efforts, plans and activities to ensure that Malay literature continues to develop uninterrupted in Singapore. It also shows that the unity of the nations’ literatures are not fragmented, but instead can continue to develop as one literature. Results of the observation show that early awareness, planning, strategy, positive action and determination have ultimately succeeded in nurturing and developing one Malay literature in Singapore and Malaysia that produces manifold results. Postcolonial literary theory asserts that the colonial literature provides the models and sets the standards which writers and readers in the colonies may either imitate or resist. The major Malay author Shahnon Ahmad received his secondary and tertiary education in English and taught English at the beginning of his career. Drawing on his collection of essays Weltanschauung: Suatu Perjalanan Kreatif (2008), the paper argues that Shahnon was influenced at significant points in his literary development by his reading of literature in English and English translation–nineteenth century European and American short stories, the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and William Faulkner – but not by English (British) literature itself. Through his creation of original new works, focused on Malay society and directed towards Malay audiences, Shahnon was not a postcolonial subject but a participant in, and contributor to, the wider flow of world literature. Throughout Malaysia’s modern history, Wayang as a dominant medium of education has mediated shifts in language ideologies and socialization, to the extent where changes to the Wayang correlate highly with changes to the Malay language. In the 1980s, the Malaysian government sought to attack and hence curtail Wayang performance, and to obscure its lineage, claiming that the Wayang defiles Islam and Malaysia as an Islamic state. The government sought to discontinue the Wayang, or at least to alter it significantly, and to persecute its adherents. With its attempts to mobilize the economy through neoliberal politics and the adoption of new non-poetic language registers, the Malaysian government altered Malaysian vernacular, cultural practices, and ideologies. Yet, little scholarly work, particularly through an Anthropological lens, has discussed the correlations and influences to these shifts. This paper addresses the significance of Wayang Kulit to the Malay language, that is, its contiguity with standardized language and vernacular, its semiotic complexities during performance and in larger society, and its junctures with Malaysian politics. The study unearths changes in the Wayang, its stylizations, symbolisms and performativities, in the latter 20th century, where these changes have aligned with cultural and language shifts, yet which the government has legitimated as pro Islamic and neoliberal. The data set includes a multi year ethnography of the Wayang, and a corpus of discussions, documentations, and scripts of Wayang performances and narratives.

The traditional Malay house architecture is undoubtedly one of the ideal green ideal design concepts that can be applied in Malaysian housing development for sustainability. Not only does it have unique features that symbolize national identity, but it is also an important example with various design strategies for habitable space based on local climate and sociocultural aspects. Nowadays, Malaysia’s construction sector has changed due to modernization and being replaced and disintegrated by modern influences. Thus, it erodes the values of the existing green design approaches commonly found in the design of traditional Malay house architecture, that respond well to the local sociocultural and climate conditions. The objective of this study is to identify the green approaches in traditional Malay houses in Malaysia. This study used a qualitative approach, which is a combination of literature studies and site observations. For the site observations approach, it limited to traditional Malay houses from five out of eleven states in Peninsular Malaysia. The investigated traditional Malay houses are from Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu, and Kelantan. The findings of the study show that the architecture of these traditional Malay houses have many green design strategies which prove the sustainability aspect exist in all investigated traditional Malay houses. Thus, this study lists 22 of typically found green design strategies in traditional Malay houses and it can be used as reference or guideline for designing homes in Malaysia.

Based on the cross-channel connections between auditory and pictorial representations, it has been proposed that the presentation of coherent narration along with the picture and text content may enhance children's story comprehension and vocabulary learning. The authors tested 40 four- to five-year-old Malaysian prereaders (17 Malays, 23 Chinese) for story comprehension while observing their eye movements to determine the degree to which the presence of pictures and/or text aids understanding of the narration and influences looking patterns. Both Malay and Chinese prereaders showed no interest in the printed text that was presented alongside the picture on the same page, which is consistent with earlier findings. This suggests that ethnic origins have little influence on how prereaders direct their visual attention to the relevant information for story comprehension. When there was no narration, they fixated longer on the text and less on the image, indicating that a significant amount of mental effort was required to process the words without verbal information. Regardless of stimulus congruency, storytelling performance affected how much children focused on target objects and keywords. More intriguingly, it was found that in Malay prereaders, there was a correlation between story comprehension and vocabulary skills across tasks. Additionally, Malay prereaders who performed well looked at the displayed stimuli longer than Chinese prereaders who performed well, especially when a narrator was presented alongside the visual stimulus. These novel findings are discussed along with their implications for multimedia learning and future research directions.

This article aims to make a preliminary and general observation on some of the influences of Shi’ism on the Malay Muslims in Malaysia since post Iranian revolution in 1979 onwards. This research emphasizes on the impact of the Iranian revolution in 1979 on the Malay Muslim society of Malaysia and the effort of some to develop the Shi’ite community in the Malay Sunnite majority. Cases in focus are in the field of education, social and politics. The researcher employed the qualitative method that includes textual analysis of the materials related to Shi’ism, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD) with those who sympathize with the Shiite groups. Among the findings are the Malay sect of Shi’ism emerged officially after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. After the revolution, many Malay students were sent to pursue their studies at the Republic of Iran. This led to the formation of Malay Shi’ites organizations that went in line with the aspiration of the Iranian Revolution. It also to some extent influenced some of the social activities of Malay Muslims of Malaysia. Keywords: Schism, Shi’ism, Sunnism, Malay, Islam. Abstrak Artikel ini bertujuan membuat satu pemerhatian awal dan umum keatas orang-orang Melayu Islam di Malaysia pasca revolusi Iran pada tahun 1979 dan selepasnya. Kajian ini menekankan impak revolusi Iran 1979 ke atas masyarakat Melayu Islam di Malaysia dan usaha sebahagian mereka untuk membentuk komuniti Shi‘ah di dalam masyarakat Melayu yang majoritinya Sunni. Kes-kes yang dikaji adalah dalam bidang pendidikan, sosial dan politik. Para pengkaji menggunakan metod kualitatif termasuk analisa tekstual terhadap bahan-bahan yang berkaitan fahaman Shi‘ah, temubual dan perbincangan kumpulan berfokus (FGD) dengan kumpulan-kumpulan yang bersimpati dengan fahaman tersebut. Di antara penemuan-penemuan dari kajian ini adalah kum-pulan Melayu Shi’ah muncul secara rasmi selepas revolusi Iran 1979. Selepas revolusi itu, ramai pelajar-pelajar Melayu Sunni telah dihantar menyambung pengajian mereka di republik Iran. Hal yang demikian menjurus kepada pembentukan organisasi-organisasi yang selari dengan aspirasi revolusi Iran. Malaysia is known for having a variety of cultural values. The usage of "pelamin" decorations is well-known in Malay weddings in Malaysia. The roots of design and layout are examined in the context of culture and visual art in this study. The point is that this concept originated from the royal throne, o which has been embraced to depict the concept of the "raja sehari" (bridegroom) during wedding ceremonies. In Malaysia, the consequence of cultural exchange is also a factor in the professional decoration's renewal results. This study aims to figure out how Malay wedding decorations are designed and what cultural influences they have. It also examines the viability of traditional and modern Malay wedding decorations. As a country that is rich in ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity, Indonesia has 668 vernacular languages, one of them is Malay. West Kalimantan is one of the regions in Indonesia where majority of the population is Malay. The population used Malay language with a variety of dialects distinctive regional. The Ketapang Malay dialect is used in Ketapang Regency. Vernacular languages which are inherited from the ancestors should be preserved as an effort to maintain their function and position as ethnic identity, personality, as well as a means to show the variety of regional culture. Unfortunately, along with the times and influx of foreign cultural influences to Indonesia as an impact of globalization, many words of Malay Ketapang dialect underwent changes, developments and displacements, moreover leading to extinction. This research developed an Android-based application of Ketapang Malay Dictionary (KBMK) with the implementation of the binary search algorithm. Application was developed using following method, data collecting, application development, application testing, and system evaluation. Blackbox testing shows that the binary search algorithm is able to search the keyword correctly. Furthermore, the KBMK application was tested using a usability evaluation, evaluation obtained an average score of 4.48 indicating that the application is useful and effective in conducting searches, and providing user satisfaction.

Abstract Context Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level is used to screen and diagnose diabetes. Genetic determinants of HbA1c can vary across populations and many of the genetic variants influencing HbA1c level were specific to populations. Objective To discover genetic variants associated with HbA1c level in nondiabetic Malay individuals. Design and Participants We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis for HbA1c using 2 Malay studies, the Singapore Malay Eye Study (SiMES, N = 1721 on GWAS array) and the Living Biobank study (N = 983 on GWAS array and whole-exome sequenced). We built a Malay-specific reference panel to impute ethnic-specific variants and validate the associations with HbA1c at ethnic-specific variants. Results Meta-analysis of the 1000 Genomes imputed array data identified 4 loci at genome-wide significance (P &lt; 5 × 10-8). Of the 4 loci, 3 (ADAM15, LINC02226, JUP) were novel for HbA1c associations. At the previously reported HbA1c locus ATXN7L3-G6PC3, association analysis using the exome data fine-mapped the HbA1c associations to a 27-bp deletion (rs769664228) at SLC4A1 that reduced HbA1c by 0.38 ± 0.06% (P = 3.5 × 10-10). Further imputation of this variant in SiMES confirmed the association with HbA1c at SLC4A1. We also showed that these genetic variants influence HbA1c level independent of glucose level. Conclusion We identified a deletion at SLC4A1 associated with HbA1c in Malay. The nonglycemic lowering of HbA1c at rs769664228 might cause individuals carrying this variant to be underdiagnosed for diabetes or prediabetes when HbA1c is used as the only diagnostic test for diabetes.

Malay and Arabic have a relationship that influences the emergence of literary works including poetry. Syair Gulong is one of the many Malay literary works that have a relationship with Arabic. This relationship is inseparable from the circle of Islamic religiosity in both languages. This study aims to reveal the relations between the two languages ​​in Syair Gulong. The form of the relation referred to in this study is the emergence of absorption words with various forms and phonological changes in syair gulung. This research concludes that the uptake words in syair gulong have a relationship between Arabic and Malay in the form of word uptake, solid uptake, and translation uptake. However, this language relation cannot be separated from the appearance of absorption words that undergo phonological changes.

Amanat dan pengaruh bahasa yang dibincangkan meliputi pesanan dan nasihatyang berlatarkan prinsip asas dalam pemerintahan Islam. Amanat dan pengaruh bahasa merupakanmaklumat penting yang disampaikan oleh pengarang naskhah Melayu sebagai nasihat kepada pewarisraja tentang akhlak dan moral dalam membentuk tradisi pemerintahan politik Islam-Melayu. Oleh itu,kajian ini menggunakan kaedah kualitatif iaitu menganalisis teks sebagai batas dalam perbincangan. Teksyang dianalisis ialah naskhah Sejarah Melayu (Sulalat al-Salatin) yang diselenggarakan oleh A. SamadAhmad, terbitan tahun 1979. Kajian ini juga telah mengaplikasikan Teori Politik Islam yang diusahakanoleh Yahaya Jusoh (2014) sebagai perbincangan tentang amanat politik Melayu tradisi yang dipengaruhioleh pemerintahan Islam. Hasil analisis mendapati amanat dan pengaruh bahasa yang dicatatkan dalamnaskhah Sejarah Melayu mempunyai sebahagian persamaan dengan prinsip asas dalam pemerintahanIslam. Prinsip asas berlandaskan ajaran Islam seperti ketaatan, keadilan, muafakat, hal ehwalmasyarakat, amanah dan melaksanakan kebaikan yang didapati dalam naskhah Sejarah Melayu ini telahmempengaruhi amanat raja-raja Melayu mengenai pemerintahan. Justeru, kajian ini berperanan untukmembentuk identiti kesinambungan identiti tradisi Kesultanan Melayu dengan tradisi pemerintahan Islamyang dicatat oleh pengarang Sejarah Melayu melalui amanat dan pengaruh bahasa daripada seorang rajakepada pewarisnya. This article proposes the discussion about the mandate and the language influences in traditionalgovernance of Malay Sultanate. The mandate and the language influences discussed include messagesand advices about the basic principles of governance of Islam. The mandate and the language influencesare important information delivered by the author of Malay’s manuscript as the advice to the king’s heirsabout ethics and morality in shaping the traditional Islamic-Malay political governance. Therefore, thisstudy used qualitative method; text analysing as the limitation of the discussion. The text analysed ismanuscript of Sejarah Melayu (Sulalat al-Salatin) managed by A.Samad Ahmad, issued in 1979. Thisstudy is applying the Theory of Political of Islam cultivated by Yahaya Jusoh (2014) in discussing theMalay political advices which have been influenced by governance of Islam. As a result, the study showsthere are some similarity between the mandate and the language influences recorded in manuscript ofSejarah Melayu and basic principles of governance of Islam. The basic principle of Islamic teaching suchas loyalty, justice, consensus, community matters, trust and implementing good found in manuscript ofSejarah Melayu influenced the mandate of Malay’s King about governance. Hence, this study works asshaping the continuity of identity of Malay Sultanate Tradition and governance of Islam tradition recordedby the author of Sejarah Melayu manuscript by using the mandate and the language influences from aKing to his heirs.

Perubatan tradisional merupakan satu kaedah rawatan psikologi kepada penyakit yang tidak dapat dirawat secara perubatan moden. Sesetengah masyarakat Melayu percaya ada penyakit yang disebabkan oleh semangat dan kuasa ghaib dan memerlukan khidmat bomoh atau dukun untuk mengubatinya. Menurut Haliza Mohd Riji (2000:17), kepercayaan masyarakat Melayu dipengaruhi pada dasarnya oleh agama Hindu-Buddha dan agama Islam iaitu agama-agama yang dibawa masuk oleh pedagang dan pengembang agama pada masa lampau. Kesan daripada pengaruh tersebut membentukworld-view masyarakat Melayu pada umumnya. World-view orang-orang Melayu adalah juga world-view pengamal perubatan Melayu. Penumpuan tesis ini memfokuskan kepada Penyakit Angin dan kaedah rawatannya kepada kaedah seni persembahan secara Main Pateri. Menurut Azman (2011 : 240) penyakit angin adalah sejenis penyakit yang berpunca daripada hasrat yang tidak tertunai atau menurut masyarakat Kelantan sebagai seorang insan yang mengalami masalah ’sekat angin’. Misalnya gagal dalam memadu kasih, pinangannya ditolak menyebabkan jiwanya menjadi lemah atau keadaan yang tidak seimbang, dan ini menyebabkan seseorang hilang semangat. Bagi mengembalikan semangat inilah maka rawatan kaedah Main Pateri diperlukan. Tesis ini menggunakan kaedah kualitatif analisis kandungan dengan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif atau ’exploranary research’. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah temubual berstruktur dan dokumentasi. Penghuraian terhadap aspek penyakit angin dan kaedah rawatan secara Main Pateri. Traditional treatment is a psychological treatment for the sickness that cannot be treated by modern medicine. Some Malay societies believe that there are sicknesses caused by spirits and supernatural forces and require the services of traditional medicine man or ‘dukun’ to cure them. According to Heliza Mohd Riji (2000:17), Malay societies believe the healing performance are basically influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, with which those religions brought by traders and missionaries. Generally the effect of these influences shapesthe world-view of Malay people. World-view of Malay affects theMalay medical performers. This thesis focuses on ‘penyakit angin’ and its healing performance known as ‘Main Pateri’. According to Malays, ‘Penyakit Angin’ is a sickness caused by unfulfilled wishes or ‘sekat angin’. For example, someone has been jilted in relationship, his or her marriage proposal being rejected causing his psychological mind weak or unbalanced condition and this will make a person become discouraged. To reshape this spirit then ‘Main Pateri’ performanceis required. This thesis uses qualitative content analysis method by using descriptive approach or ‘exploratory research’.

In the 1950s and 1960s Malaya/Malaysia was undergoing a tremendous amount of social change. One method of examining how this period was understood is through Malay film. A number of Malay writers and activists found work in the vibrant film industry of the Peninsula, which was centred on Singapore at the time, and proceeded to infuse many of the films with their ideas, hopes, and understandings of the society they saw around them. As part of these developments, and perhaps due to the phenomenon of repetition, blindness became a metaphor in a number of films to address the issue of modernity and tradition, and the tension between rural and urban. In films produced in the early 1950s blindness occurs among kampung-based characters, or among supporting players within the larger drama. Their blindness is usually caused or compounded by a sadness in their lives. In these films, an urban-based character attempts to arrange for an operation that will remedy the condition, but only after a character has had to deal with the underside of modernity. The use of blindness as a trope for moral/ethical failure is alien to traditional Malay culture. Thus, its use and repetition represent the external influences and ideas of modernity in Malay filmmaking of the period. While the city was frightening, it held the possibility of change for the better. Characters in these films had to deal first with the negative sides of such a life, but if they retained the positive traditional values of Malay culture, all would be well. By the early 1960s, however, after the promise of independence had transitioned to debates over merger, identity, and economic and social disruption, the metaphor of blindness had also shifted. Although technologycould cure the condition, the world that accompanied this technology was one that was unbearable. Unlike the earlier supporting characters facing a sightless life, it was now the main character who becomes blind in a manner that is violent and irreversible. It was a world that promoted selfishness and materialism. Blindness now became an act of mutilation, not a symbol of sadness but one of alienation.

It is generally perceived that Malays—who are predominantly Muslims—are comparable with the notion of politeness, aligned with moral axioms, and behave in ways copiously guided by religion. Casual sex and other forms of sexual “deviance” are typically attributed to foreign influences, most popularly, Westernisation. New social trends among this community, such as the emphasis on male dominance, changing prescriptions about the functions and expectations of sex, receptiveness towards the body and emotion, exposure to sex education, and openness to sexual discourse are often attributed to the “immoral” West. Yet, forms of sexual behaviours depicted in the writings of notable Malay religious and literary personages reveal surprising insights into the Malay-Muslim milieu of 19th-century Riau. A variety of sexual practices and relations are expressed through these writings. This article adopts a historical-sociological framework to examine the “artisan tools” of textual materials as in the Kitab Pengetahuan Bahasa (Book of Linguistic Knowledge) by Raja Ali Haji and Perhimpunan Gunawan bagi Laki-Laki dan Perempuan (A Compendium of Charms for Men and Women) by Khatijah Terung. The “outrageous” sexual depictions in these texts are discussed and analysed, in part to debunk the idea of a “sexual revolution” or “sexual licentiousness” as emanating from an external culture.

The International Conference on Islam and Development in SoutheastAsia was held during September 25-26, 1991, at the Equatorial Hotel, KualaLumpur, Malaysia. The conference was jointly organized by the Academyof Malay Studies (University of Malaya), the Islamic Academy (Universityof Malaya), and the Information and Resource Center (Singapore) and wassponsored by the Hanns-Seidel Foundation. The conference's stated aim wasto demonstrate the differences in programs for cooperation between Islamiccountries, the integration attempts of developing countries, and the actualeconomic and political situations of Southeast Asian countries.There were four main panels in the program: a) Islam and Developmentin Southeast Asia: A Historical Perspective; b) Islam and the Political Process;c) Islam and Economic Development; and 4) Islam and the Future of theRegion.In the first panel, Khoo Kay Kim (professor of Malaysian history,University of Malaya) pointed out that Muslims have historically emphasizededucation, while in modern times they have tended to allow education tobe shaped by outside rather than inside influences.
