Hrevuš, Jan. "Non-Life Excess of Loss Reinsurance Pricing". Doctoral thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2010. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-200014.

Texto completo
Resumen
Probably the most frequently used definition of reinsurance is insurance for insurance companies, by reinsurance the cedant (insurance company) cedes part of the risk to the reinsurer. Reinsurance plays nowadays a crucial role in insurance industry as it does not only reduce the reinsured's exposure, but it can also significantly reduce the required solvency capital. In past few decades various approaches to reinsurance actuarial modelling were published and many actuaries are nowadays just reinsurance specialized. The thesis provides an overview of the actuarial aspects of modelling a non-life per risk and for motor third party liability per event excess of loss reinsurance structure, according to the author's knowledge no study of such wide scope exists and various aspects have to be found in various fragmented articles published worldwide. The thesis is based on recent industry literature describing latest trends and methodologies used, the theory is compared with the praxis as the author has working experience from underwriting at CEE reinsurer and actuarial reinsurance modelling at global reinsurance broker. The sequence of topics which are dealt corresponds to sequence of the steps taken by actuary modelling reinsurance and each step is discussed in detail. Starting with data preparation and besides loss inflation, more individual claims development methods are introduced and own probabilistic model is constructed. Further, burning cost analysis and probabilistic rating focused on heavy tailed distributions are discussed. A special attention is given to exposure rating which is not commonly known discipline among actuaries outside of reinsurance industry and different methodologies for property and casualty exposure modelling are introduced including many best practice suggestions. All main approaches to the reinsurance modelling are also illustrated on either real or realistically looking data, similar to those provided by European insurance companies to their reinsurers during renewal periods.

Resumen
" Estimating Life Loss for Dam Safety Risk Assessment" explores the need for a new life-loss model in dam safety risk assessment, historical foundations on which that model can be built, and issues that are critical for a successful life-loss model to address. After critiquing existing life-loss models, the work presents a summary of historical insights that were derived by characterizing flood events on the level of subpopulations at risk, using nearly l 00 carefully defined variables. Building upon both conceptual and historical insights, the work culminates by presenting the conceptual basis for a new life-loss model that remains under development. Chapter I introduces the topic of dam safety risk assessment and the central role that life-loss estimation plays in that field. Chapter II discusses important preliminary considerations in model development. Chapter Ill provides a detailed review of previous life-loss models that pertained to floods, including a critique of each. Chapter IV explores the DeKay-McClelland model in detail and raises serious concerns regarding its future use. Chapter V defines nearly l 00 variables and their respective categories for use in characterizing flood events. Chapter VI provides a detailed outline of historical insights that relate to flood events in one of 18 logical categories. Chapter VII proposes the framework for a new conceptual life-loss model-a model that is still under development and has yet to be refined or offered for testing-with sufficient details to indicate how it was developed and how it might be used. Chapter VIII provides a summary, conclusions, and recommendations for future research. Appendices A through D provide material related to over 900 pages of unpublished working documents developed while characterizing 38 flood events and nearly 200 subpopulations at risk. Appendix E offers a summary of existing software that, given additional development, might prove useful to life-loss estimation in dam safety risk assessment.

Resumen
Normative ideas of age and stage-based transitions are built into policies and practices related to aging. However, how the issues of loss and depression impact older people's experiences of transition are often less prevalent. This paper discusses the sub-theme of loss identified within data from the Late Life Transitions Project; a SSHRC funded research project. In this thesis, qualitative interviews were analyzed from 30 community-residing seniors from diverse social backgrounds. Focused exploration of the everyday ways in which older people discussed major transitions and turning points revealed a strong subtheme of loss. Findings presented are related to the types of loss, the various barriers to integrating loss, coping mechanisms and the impact of social location on loss. Such discussions inform understandings of the ways in which older people discuss and make sense of their loss, and may provide guidance to plan interventions that are more relevant to older people's late life experiences.

Aboelata, Maged A. "Conceptualization and Development of a Dam Break Life-Loss Estimation Model". DigitalCommons@USU, 2005. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4540.

Texto completo
Resumen
Catastrophic events such as dam failures or severe floods are considered to be of low probability, although their consequences can be extremely high and might include loss of life. Earlier studies have linked circumstances surrounding historical darn failure events to actual loss of life and produced formulations using statistical analysis of these events. Shortcomings of these methods include the inability to adjust life-loss estimates based on the type of darn failure, global averaging of population at risk, and ignoring the dynamics of the evacuation process. The main objective of this research is to develop a practical and improved life-loss estimation approach for use in dam safety risk assessment and emergency planning. The methodology is specifically formulated to overcome the limitations of previous. purely empirical, approaches. The approach takes into account the spatial and temporal distribution of flood water depth and velocity, fate of buildings, simulation of warning diffusion, and tracking the movement of people from their original location towards safe shelters. The model created, called LlFESim, is designed to serve multiple function s. First, it can be used in a Deterministic Mode using best estimate inputs to obtain point estimates, or to test different policies for evacuation as well as different times of the day and for different dam breach flooding scenarios. Second, the Uncertainty Mode represents input and parameter uncertainties to provide estimates of life loss, and other variables relating to warning and evacuation effectiveness, as probability distributions. These distributions of life loss can be combined with estimates of the uncertainties in other risk assessment inputs, to obtain estimates of uncertainties in risk assessment results, including evaluations against tolerable risk guidelines. Two communities were used to demonstrate the model performance. Deterministic Mode results display the various possible model outputs. Sensitivity analysis for the Deterministic Mode shows that the effect of warning issuance time is the dominant factor in the estimated life loss. However, other factors play an important role such as the time of day, effectiveness of the warning system, and shelter location. Uncertainty Mode results demonstrate the effect of uncertainties in model parameters and inputs on the model results.

Resumen
Second Life, a 3-D virtual world, has evolved as a shopping channel for both consumers and retailers. This channel of retailing offers interactive environment, allows designing atmospherics, and provides enjoyable shopping experience as compared to website stores. The purpose of the study was: (1) to identify the key features of Second Life stores and (2) to determine the relationship of the Second Life store features with consumer purchase intentions. The online survey was administered in Second Life by an external research agency, and 249 usable surveys were collected. The data were analyzed utilizing factor analysis and regression. Three key features of Second Life stores were explored in this study. These three features were: (1) interactivity via the two components of two-way communication and active control, (2) store atmospherics, and (3) shopping enjoyment. Regression analysis showed that shopping enjoyment and two-way communication (i.e., the presence of an avatar sales representative) were significant predictors of purchase intention in Second Life stores, while active control and store atmospherics did not influence purchase intentions.

Epiphaniou, Eleni. "Life triggers, sustaining mechanisms and successful weight loss : how are they related?" Thesis, University of Surrey, 2008. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/842818/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Although the majority of obese and overweight individuals successfully lose weight only a minority maintain weight loss in the long term. This thesis, through a mixed model methods approach, examined the factors which reinforced healthy behavior change in a group of obese and overweight individuals and assessed the factors which underlined sustained behavior change in the minority of individuals who successfully maintained at least 10% of their initial weight loss. In particular, the thesis focuses on the role of life events in triggering behaviour change and the impact of sustaining conditions in maintaining this change in the long term. Study 1 was a quantitative study. Members of a commercial weight loss program (N= 1093) were invited to participate in the study through an online advertisement. The aim of the study was to examine participants' different weight patterns, based on their weight history, and to assess whether these patterns were explained by participants' weight and demographic characteristics. The results showed that weight histories could be categorized into 5 independent patterns which were: a) weight cycling with overall increase, b) weight cycling with initial weight stability, c) weight cycling with return to baseline, d) weight loss and e) gradual gain. Concerning participants' demographic and weight characteristics, results also revealed significant .differences between the different weight patterns. In addition, obese and overweight individuals indicated significant differences in their weight histories. Based on their weight histories, and in particular, their percentage of weight loss, participants could be also categorized into those individuals who regained some or all of their weight loss (unsuccessful participants; N= 592) and those who managed to maintain at least 10% of their initial weight loss and which they maintained for a minimum of one year (successful participants; TV = 431). Study 2 then focused on these two groups and aimed to examine the role of life events and sustaining conditions in behavior change and behavior maintenance. Variables such as participants' health status and experiences with consultants were also included in the analysis. Results revealed significant differences between the two groups with successful participants indicating more life events, less benefits from their unhealthy behavior, more choice over their healthy behavior and more psychological beliefs about causality which were related to their behavioral solutions. Also, successful participants were more positive concerning their health status and experiences with their consultants. Study 3 applied a within subjects design which aimed to examine the differences within the successful group between Time 1 (Their heaviest) and Time 2 (sustained weight loss) in regards to their health status and sustaining conditions of disruption of function, reduction choice and solutions for their increased weight. The results showed that maintaining weight loss was linked to an improved health status, more choice and perceived benefits over the healthy behavior and an endorsement of an improved and healthier lifestyle. Study 4, using a qualitative approach, aimed to further explore whether maintenance of behavior was related not only to the sustaining mechanisms but also to a shift in identity and perception of self. 10 successful individuals were invited to participate. Using IPA results indicated that weight loss maintenance is related to an identity shift from a previously restrained individual towards a liberated person who tends to redefine themselves based on new qualities apart from their weight. Overall, this thesis indicates that the minority of individuals who are finally successful in losing and maintaining weight loss are more likely to experience some life events central to their goals and identity. These events enhance maintenance when they are accompanied by sustaining mechanisms and by a shift in mental representations about their self.

Rennex, Bronwyn Gai. "Life with Birds: an archaeology of war and loss in the suburbs". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/24648.

Resumen
Life with Birds is an investigation of the disjunction between public and private experiences of the Vietnam war and its aftermath. The creative non-fiction component of the thesis juxtaposes historical documents with family stories, photographs and memories in order to situate military history in the home and disrupt the binaries around dominant war tropes, such as the heroic/traumatic binary. It focuses on the everyday, the small scale and the ordinary as worthy of historical and cultural attention and aims to redress the silences and erasures in bureaucracies, archives and within families by reimagining or repopulating them with found materials, a combination of information, observation and guesswork. This lyric methodology was developed using concepts of Toni Morrison’s ‘literary archaeology’, Marianne Hirsch’s ‘postmemory’ and Hélène Cixous’ l’écriture féminine, as well as Claudia Rankine’s deployment of the lyric form in Citizen. The exegesis examines writings and discourses around war in Australia that erase the experiences and legacy of certain war veterans and their families, including mine. In it I discuss the disconnect between national mythologisation and commemoration of Anzac and Vietnam veterans and the lived experiences of veteran families, such as impacts of war trauma, bureaucratic intransigence and veteran health and suicide. This thesis highlights the ongoing negotiations between public and private lives in an attempt to broaden the conversation around the invisible or erased impacts of war in Australia, particularly for women and the children of war veterans.

Duggan, Sarah C. "Life, loss and labour : narrating subjectivity in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil". Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3469.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis critically examines the lived effects of economic restructuring in the city of Lençóis, Bahia, Brazil. Established at height of the region’s diamond mining boom in the mid 19th century, the local economy now rests almost exclusively on ecological tourism, with the city of Lençóis serving as the principal gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park. Combining ethnographic research methods, archive work and the analysis of governmental programs, I consider the impacts of tourism development strategies and conservation interventions on the lives and subjectivities of local community members. As it gives rise to new projects and new demands, I explore how this shift in political economy has interacted with historical processes of social and economic exclusion, and consider its role in reshaping uses and understandings of the material landscape. Yet, in foregrounding local responses to state-led projects for development, this thesis is also concerned with possibilities for contestation and critique. In Lençóis, memories of past modes of existence continue to evoke emotional resonance for many local people, and in particular local men. Exploring the stories people told me of their past lives and present-day experiences, I consider the affective dimensions of economic change, reading attachment to loss for its productive and creative potential (Eng and Kazanjian, 2003). These alternative narratives, voiced from the perspective of those most deeply affected by economic transition, reveal critical engagement with dominant cultural and political imperatives, and indicate how, in the midst of uncertainty, local people are responding to and seeking to challenge changes to the material circumstances of their lives.

Resumen
Approximately 15 % of Swedish people experience tinnitus, but only 2.4 % of them experience severe problems. Treatment modalities for tinnitus are varied, but the most common treatment model is counselling. The majority of patients with tinnitus report some degree of hearing loss, and in addition, hearing aids have been used for many years in patients who suffer from both tinnitus and hearing impairment. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the disease management and identify the quality of life in patients with tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss. Both studies described here are retrospective, descriptive studies of patients who sought care for tinnitus and hearing loss at the two ENT clinics in Östergötland County, Sweden, during 2004 - 2007 and who also received a diagnosis code. A medical record review of all patients (study I contained 1672 subjects) revealed that 714 patients were diagnosed with both tinnitus and SNHL between 2004 and 2007 and could be included in study II. The results showed that 70% of our cohort had tinnitus, but many of the patients initially did not receive a diagnosis for their tinnitus. Information about the patients’ vertigo, heredity for hearing loss and tinnitus, diabetes history, cardiovascular disease history and other factors related to their health was often missing from the medical records. Our findings showed that the Stepped Care Model, which however was only used in a minority of the cases, could be effective in patients with tinnitus and could provide a better care process for these patients. Of the cohort, 56% of the patients received a diagnosis of bilateral hearing loss. The pure tone average (PTA) of the left ear was significantly higher than that of the right ear. There were 314 patients (44%) who had hearing aids out of the total of 714, even though it is likely that hearing aids could be beneficial for these patients. We found that the overall scores for the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) were higher in female patients than male patients. All patients who participated in study II estimated their life quality and general health at a good level. This could be due to the fact that they were investigated 4.5 years after they first reported their tinnitus and that tinnitus annoyance decrease over time. Further, the outcomes of study II demonstrated that the majority of patients, who were dissatisfied with the care they obtained, had no hearing aids. This could indicate a support the use of hearing aids fitting as main treatment model in patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss. Future research is needed to investigate how hearing aid professionals could motivate patients who suffer from both tinnitus and hearing loss to use hearing aids.

Dodd, Lauren. "Feline Obesity: Food Toys and Owner Perceived Quality of Life During a Prescribed Weight". Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/102626.

Texto completo
Resumen
The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the feline population is estimated to be 25.7% and 33.8%, respectively. Feline obesity is associated with comorbidities such as insulin resistance and hepatic lipidosis. Several risk factors are associated with obesity including middle age, neuter status, decreased activity, and diet. Obesity management is multifaceted and includes client education, diet modification, and consistent monitoring. Successful obesity management may be dependent on owner perception of their cat's quality of life during a prescribed weight loss plan. Poor quality of life perception may result in failure to complete the weight loss process. Food toys may be used to enhance environmental enrichment, allow cats to express their natural predatory behavior and overall improve owner-perceived quality of life. Therefore, we set out to investigate the role of food toys in owner-perceived quality of life of obese cats during a prescribed weight loss plan. Fifty-five cats with a BCS > 7 were enrolled in a double-blinded weight loss study and randomized into one of two groups: food toy (n=26) or food bowl (n=29). Each cat was provided a prescribed weight loss diet and instructions. Body weight and body condition score were evaluated monthly. Additionally, owners completed a monthly questionnaire to assess their cat's quality of life. Of the 44 cats in the final analysis, 66% (n=29) successfully completed the study and lost > 2 BCS points and/or achieved an ideal BCS of 5/9. Low-calorie vegetables were offered to the majority of cats (n= 32) due to owner reports of disruptive food seeking behavior. Of the cats offered vegetables, 87.5% (n=28) cats required a commercial palatant to consume the vegetables. All enrolled cats had a higher (p<0.0000) owner-perceive quality of life at the final visit/recheck/end of study (median QOL=110.0), as compared to the initial weight loss appointment (median QOL=126.0). The increase in quality of life was primarily driven by improvement in moving from one place to another, grooming and scratching, engaging in social activities, and playing and hunting. There was no effect (p=0.27) of food toy on owner-perceived quality of life. Prescribed weight loss improves owner-perceived quality of life of obese cats. A single food toy (ball-style) was included in this study and did not appear to influence owner-perceived QOL. However, the role of food toys needs further investigation as there are several food toy styles that have not yet been investigated during a prescribed weight loss plan. We suspect that most/all of the 32 cats fed vegetables would have withdrawn from the study. Therefore, including vegetables in the prescribed weight loss plan appears to improve success of weight loss in obese cats.

Al-badri, Samir B. Salman. "Extending Saleable Shelf Life Of Selected Perishable Specialty Crops". OpenSIUC, 2019. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1648.

Resumen
Farmers are limited in the amount of specialty crops they can plant, harvest and market without adequate cooling to preserve commodities before sale. A cooler available at a farm would allow the farmer to harvest his produce earlier and take it to market at a later time. Cooling available on the farm will help a farmer to harvest commodities during peak harvest times and store it for future sale at multiple farmers markets or over a period of a week or more at a farm market. A cooler will give a farmer more logistical options. An indirect-direct evaporative pad cooling can provide cooling with high humidity which is sufficient to prolong shelf life. A cool room with window air conditioning (AC) was modified by adding indirect-direct evaporative cooling. The cool room was used for comparative study of produce shelf life under AC (with CoolBot), indirect-direct evaporative cooling (EC), residential AC (RES), and farm building (FB) storage. Results showed that FB had a lower shelf life because of non-conditioned space. RES was a table in an office building with a temperature of about 22°C. For produce with medium temperature requirements such as tomato, cucumber, and green pepper the shelf life was prolonged more in the cooler room. Strawberry and blueberry had a much longer shelf life in a cooler. The shelf life of the blueberry stored at Cooler AC was longer about two and a half fold longer than Cooler EC and RES, and five and half fold longer than FB. The shelf life of the strawberry in Cooler AC was longer one-fold than Cooler EC, two and a half fold longer than RES, and five-fold longer than FB. The shelf life of green pepper stored in Cooler AC was longer fivefold than Cooler EC and nine and a half fold longer than RES and FB. The shelf life of cucumber stored at Cooler AC was longer two fold than Cooler EC and 3.3-fold longer than RES and four fold longer than FB. The shelf life of tomato stored at Cooler AC was longer 1.25-fold than Cooler EC, 1.75 fold longer than RES and two and a half fold longer than FB. Generally stored fruits and vegetables in Cooler AC was maintained quality with minimal weight loss that allows a farmer to store their produce while maintaining shelf life. Cooler EC can be used to store produce for a shorter time with higher weight loss. Finally, FB had a shorter shelf life due to the non-conditioned space.

Resumen
E-cadherin (Cdh1), is a major component of epithelial adherens junctions, binds the Wnt pathway effector β-catenin and is lost at the invasive edge of colon cancers. Crypt stem cells give rise to 4 cell lineages that, with the exception of Paneth cells, travel along the crypt-villus axis over 3 days and are shed by anoikis. Gain of function of the Wnt pathway by a mutation in Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (Apc) disrupts enterocyte turnover to result in adenoma formation. Homozygote null Cdh1 is embryonic lethal, and heterozygote Cdh1 can promote Apc1638N induced adenoma formation, but we lack models that assess additional functions of Cdh1 in the adenoma to carcinoma transition. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of Cdh1 loss of function in the murine intestine, including in the setting of Wnt pathway activation. To do this, germline and intestinal specific conditional Cdh1 loss of function models were generated. Conditional homozygous deletion of Cdh1 resulted in embryonic lethality using Villin-Cre. In adults, homozygous Cdh1 loss using the tamoxifen inducible Villin-CreERT2 led to intestinal inflammation, bacteraemia and disrupted crypt-villus architecture. Combined conditional homozygous deletion of Cdh1 and Apc resulted in Wnt pathway upregulation assessed by β-catenin immunolabelling. Strain dependent effects of Cdh1 heterozygosity were apparent on the Apc heterozygote background: ApcMin/+ Cdh1+/- (C57BL/6J) had no effect on survival or adenoma phenotype compared to littermate ApcMin/+; Cdh1+/fl increased adenoma burden in Apc+/fl Vil-Cre animals (B6D2/C57BL/6J). Low frequency recombination of Apcfl/fl using Lgr5-EGFP-IRES-CreERT2 bypasses the loss of heterozygosity event relied on in heterozygous Apc tumour models achieving a large adenoma burden within 4 weeks. Cdh1 loss did not alter survival or adenoma phenotype in this model, including the development of large caecal tumours. Immunolabelling of tumours from Apcfl/fl Cdh1fl/fl animals showed persistent E-cadherin protein expression, suggesting incomplete recombination or that double homozygote enterocytes failed to survive. In vitro adenoma culture was used to test whether E-cadherin loss was incompatible with enterocyte survival in the setting of Wnt activation. Apcfl/fl Cdh1+/+ and Apcfl/fl Cdh1fl/fl adenoma were cultured in matrigel and treated with an adenovirus expressing Cre recombinase under a CMV promoter (Ad-Cre). Ad-Cre had no effect on Apcfl/fl Cdh1+/+ adenoma growth. Ad-Cre treated Apcfl/fl Cdh1fl/fl adenoma organoids showed cells where E‑cadherin loss resulted in Wnt pathway upregulation as assessed by nuclear β-catenin and Axin2 expression, and epithelial mesenchymal transition shown by upregulation of fibronectin, twist and vimentin. This work supports a role for E-cadherin in modulation of the Wnt pathway. Further investigation is required to define the cell adhesion versus Wnt regulatory functions of E-cadherin.

Wilson, Daniel O. "MALE FARMERS COPING WITH LOSS OF SPOUSE: IMPACTS ON FARMING OPERATION AND FAMILY LIFE". UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/cld_etds/3.

Resumen
Losing a spouse is as devastating an experience anyone will ever deal with in his or her life. Research, however, shows that men have a harder and longer time coping with the loss of a spouse than women. When the widower’s profession is farming, there are no resources to specifically help that individual with their loss. The purpose of this research was to gain insight into the lives of widowed farmers with particular focus on transitions in their farming operation and their family life. Through their stories, we learn what is happening before the loss of the female spouse on the farm, during the bereavement period, and how the farmer handles the situation after the bereavement period has ended. Findings indicate that the Cooperative Extension Service can play a major role in supporting our widowed farmers as they seek a new normal for their farm operation and family life. Also, farming widowers have more stress following the loss of a spouse due to the added aspect of managing the farm and the home simultaneously after the passing of their spouse. Recommendations include further expanding spousal bereavement materials to include a section for males and in particular farming widowers.

Although it is likely that hearing aids would be beneficial for the majority of these patients, 314 (44%) of the 714 total patients had hearing aids. Furthermore, the outcomes from study II demonstrated that a majority of the patients (61%) who were dissatisfied with the care they had obtained had no hearing aids. This finding may indicate that the fitting of hearing aids is an important treatment for patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss. Studies III and IV were prospective studies. Data collection was based on patients who sought care for tinnitus and/or hearing loss at the ENT clinic in Linköping during 2012-2013. In study III, 92 patients were divided into two groups: one group contained individuals with both tinnitus and hearing loss, and the other group contained patients with only hearing loss. The patients were assessed using the Reading Span test, the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT) and three questionnaires (the THI, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Elderly and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index) at baseline and follow-up. The results from the age-matched subgroups (n=30+30) generated from the full clinical groups (46+46) showed significantly improved Reading Span test performance and sleep quality in patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss. Similar results were observed in our full clinical population (n=46+46). However, the interpretation of this finding is difficult due to age differences between the groups. In conclusion, hearing aid fitting had a significantly positive impact on working memory capacity and sleep quality in patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss compared with patients with only hearing loss. In study IV, a brief Motivational Interviewing (MI) guide was integrated into the hearing rehabilitation process for 23 patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss, and they were compared against a control group (n=23) of patients with both tinnitus and hearing loss who underwent traditional hearing rehabilitation. The results showed that the patients who received the brief MI guide required fewer visits to complete their hearing rehabilitation compared with the patients in the control group. In addition, there was a significant difference in THI scores between the groups, which indicated that the intervention reduced tinnitus annoyance more in the MI group. Furthermore, both groups showed higher scores at follow-up compared with baseline on the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) scale, which indicated that both approaches showed a positive effect on hearing aid satisfaction. Study V was a retrospective, descriptive study that focused on a part of a Stepped Care model and included patients who participated in half-day tinnitus information meetings from 2004 to 2011 in the audiology clinic at Linköping University Hospital. A total of 426 tinnitus patients with complete questionnaires (the THI and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, HADS) were included in the study. The results showed significant decreases in scores on the THI and the anxiety module of the HADS before and after the information session. However, there were no statistically significant changes in the depression module of the HADS. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the importance of hearing impairment, cognitive variables and motivational procedures in the management of tinnitus. Multidisciplinary group information needs to be further validated.

Resumen
The prediction of fatigue life and evaluation of onset and growth of matrix cracks and delamination for general composite laminates are studied analytically using theories of damage tolerance, residual modulus degradation and residual strength degradation. Damage onset including matrix cracks and edge delamination are predicted by using a total strain energy release rate criterion which accounts for interactive effects of matrix cracks and delamination. The analytical models for modulus degradation, matrix crack density and delamination size growth as function of fatigue stress and fatigue cycles are proposed. The proposed approach provides four choices for predicting tension-tension fatigue life and for assessing fail-safety for structures made of composite laminates. The direct relation of physical damage to fatigue life and analytical equations for calculating residual elastic moduli E$ rm{ sb1, E sb2, v sb{12}}$ and G$ sb{12}$ in terms of fatigue load and fatigue cycles are proposed. The proposed approach enables prediction of fatigue behaviour of general laminates using experimental data of a basic lay-up such as unidirectional laminate. The finite element technique was utilized to model the fatigue failure process of notched laminates. A simple example of a laminate with a central hole under tension-tension fatigue loading was performed.

Resumen
Background: Little is known about the psychological effects on life after weight loss surgery. Results from the systematic review above showed some persisting disordered psychosocial quality of life and wellbeing in longer term follow up periods in participants after the procedure when compared to control groups. This highlighted potential need for psychological intervention post-surgery and further research to provide more data on long term psychosocial impact of weight loss surgery. Even clearer was the lack of patient perspective on their experience and needs after having the surgery. Generating qualitative post-surgery data is vital as it gives health professionals detailed information on whether patients feel psychological care is needed after surgical obesity treatment and, if so, specifically what kind of care. Therefore the study aims were; 1) to explore patients’ experiences of life after weight loss surgery, discussing perceived benefits and limitations of the procedure, and realisation of patients’ expectations AND 2) triangulate patients’ experiences with the views of health professionals involved in surgery and ongoing care to examine concordance between the cohorts. Methods: Ten individuals who had had weight loss surgery between 2 to 6 years ago and eight health professionals were recruited within an NHS bariatric surgery service through purposeful sampling and individually interviewed by the researcher. The semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Patients reported drastic weight loss and improvements in a range of co-morbidities in the first year that coincided with better psychological and social function. However long term experiential narratives revealed a need for psychological aftercare to support patients through physical and psychological changes. Specifically, issues of excess skin, acceptance of non-obese self and perceived prejudice following drastic weight loss were highlighted. Discussion: Overall it would seem that weight loss surgery is a great catalyst for weight loss in those suffering from severe obesity. However, this tool needs to go hand in hand with psychological support post-surgery to aid long term optimal results. In relation to health psychology, suggestions for theoretical application and health interventions to facilitate patients through postoperative adjustments after surgery are outlined as well as recommendations for better service provision.

Resumen
There is a taboo surrounding death in our North American culture. We're not sure how to talk about it, or how to connect through it. The HBO series Six Feet Under breaks this taboo with its honest, humorous and moving look at death and dying. There are important lessons to be drawn from this series. Teachers could revolutionize their classrooms as this show has revolutionized television: by dealing with issues that most tend to avoid. Parker Palmer and Mary Rose O'Reilley's views on education provide a foundation for this thesis. First, teachers need to recognize the fragility of their students as well as their own. Second, they need to appreciate that loss comes in many forms, and that mourning is often necessary. Third, teaching needs to create a space for both students and teachers to express themselves. Fourth, this space also needs to exist in order for both teachers and students to truly listen to one another. Fifth, teachers need to change their own perception of death and dying if they expect students to do the same. Last, teachers need to promote the idea of connection with the world outside the classroom. This thesis's intention is to bring awareness and acceptance around death and dying to individuals, particularly teachers, by exploring Six Feet Under through the characters' journeys, and extracting its many valuable lessons.

de, Castro Francisco, Ursula Gaedke y Jens Boenigk. "Reverse evolution : driving forces behind the loss of acquired photosynthetic traits". Universität Potsdam, 2009. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2010/4496/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Background: The loss of photosynthesis has occurred often in eukaryotic evolution, even more than its acquisition, which occurred at least nine times independently and which generated the evolution of the supergroups Archaeplastida, Rhizaria, Chromalveolata and Excavata. This secondary loss of autotrophic capability is essential to explain the evolution of eukaryotes and the high diversity of protists, which has been severely underestimated until recently. However, the ecological and evolutionary scenarios behind this evolutionary ‘‘step back’’ are still largely unknown. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using a dynamic model of heterotrophic and mixotrophic flagellates and two types of prey, large bacteria and ultramicrobacteria, we examine the influence of DOC concentration, mixotroph’s photosynthetic growth rate, and external limitations of photosynthesis on the coexistence of both types of flagellates. Our key premises are: large bacteria grow faster than small ones at high DOC concentrations, and vice versa; and heterotrophic flagellates are more efficient than the mixotrophs grazing small bacteria (both empirically supported). We show that differential efficiency in bacteria grazing, which strongly depends on cell size, is a key factor to explain the loss of photosynthesis in mixotrophs (which combine photosynthesis and bacterivory) leading to purely heterotrophic lineages. Further, we show in what conditions an heterotroph mutant can coexist, or even out-compete, its mixotrophic ancestor, suggesting that bacterivory and cell size reduction may have been major triggers for the diversification of eukaryotes. Conclusions/Significance: Our results suggest that, provided the mixotroph’s photosynthetic advantage is not too large, the (small) heterotroph will also dominate in nutrient-poor environments and will readily invade a community of mixotrophs and bacteria, due to its higher efficiency exploiting the ultramicrobacteria. As carbon-limited conditions were presumably widespread throughout Earth history, such a scenario may explain the numerous transitions from phototrophy to mixotrophy and further to heterotrophy within virtually all major algal lineages. We challenge prevailing concepts that affiliated the evolution of phagotrophy with eutrophic or strongly light-limited environments only.

Resumen
The present analogue study compared the effects of 2 theoretically divergent Life Review group psychotherapies on aspects of late life adjustment and development. Thirty-six adult non-patients, ages 65 years and older, from the Muncie - Delaware County vicinity, were randomly selected from an available subject pool of screened volunteer respondents and randomly assigned to one of three analogue treatment conditions with two groups for each treatment condition. These three treatment conditions were the structured reminiscence life review group (SRLR), the Gestalt life review group (GLR) and a Wait List control group (WLC). Demographic, mental status, and Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADL) data were obtained from initial respondents by telephone interview and followed by written completion of the Symptom Checklist (SCL 90-R). The differential effects of treatment were measured by pre and post testing on four dependent variables: (1) depression, (2) congruence, (3) helplessness, and (4) ego integrity. Results indicated that neither of the two life review group psychotherapy treatments had any statistically significant effect upon the dependent variables. In a post hoc exploratory analysis, evidence emerged which suggested that the participants in the GLR treatment condition may have shown significant improvement on several state mental health variables. The dimensions of improvement for participants in the GLR were Interpersonal Sensitivity, Hostility, Depression, and Positive Symptom report as measured by the SCL 90-R. This contrasted with those in both the SRLR or WLC condition for whom no improvement was shown.

Low, Brian. "A Cellular Mechanism for Dendritic Spine Loss Following Traumautic Brain Injury in Rat". VCU Scholars Compass, 2009. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1892.

Texto completo
Resumen
Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. The injury is often composed of two processes: the primary injury, which can involve irreversible loss of tissue, and the secondary injury, which involves a cascade of reactive processes such as excitotoxicity that occur in the hours and days after the initial insult. Excitotoxic stimulation of neuronal circuits can lead to cellular dysfunction and modulation of neuronal sensitivity. One mechanism of dysfunction involves the calcium-regulated phosphatase, calcineurin. Calcineurin has been shown to be involved in the modulation of the neuronal post-synaptic structures known as dendritic spines. One means by which CaN regulates spine structure is through the dephosphorylation of the down-stream effector proteins such as, cofilin. This study tracks the changes in CaN activity levels as well as the phosphorylation state of cofilin in the cortex and hippocampus in each hemisphere of the laterally injured brain. We report that the lateral brain injury causes an increase in CaN activity in the hippocampus with a corresponding dephosphorylation of cofilin. Trauma-induced changes in CaN follow a slightly different time course in cortical tissue, as there is a biphasic modulation of cofilin that begins with an increased phosphorylation which is followed by an extended dephosphorylation. This dephosphorylation is partially prevented by a single post-injury injection of FK506, a calcineurin inhibitor. Since dephosphorylation of cofilin is a rate-limiting step in dendritic spine collapse, the results of this study demonstrate a potential cellular mechanism through which traumatic brain injury results in altered neuronal function.

Collins-Colosi, Kelly Lynn. "Young Adult Narratives of Sibling Loss and Bereavement during Adolescence". ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3243.

Texto completo
Resumen
Up to 90% of adolescents in the U.S. experience a loss of a family member or friend. However, prior research on loss of a family member has focused predominantly on the adult experience (e.g., loss of a spouse), parental bereavement (loss of a child), or grief counseling as an intervention for dealing with loss. Little is known about the sibling loss experience, particularly from the point of view of the surviving sibling who suffered the loss when they were young. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the narratives of young adults who experienced the loss of a sibling during adolescence, and to understand the role of family, friends, and resources. This research utilized three theoretical models: Erik Erickson's theory of Psychosocial Development, Murray Bowen's theory of Family Systems, and Theresa Rando's 6 R's theory of loss. Eight participants (all female) between 18 and 30 years who lost a sibling between 13 and 18 years were invited through posting in 4 closed sibling loss groups on Facebook. Using Reissman's thematic analysis, data from semi-structured interviews revealed five themes: returning to school (refuge vs. struggle); being there (sources of support); emotional separation (family, friends, and the lost sibling); identification of self/moving forward (turning points following the loss); and family dynamics with departed and surviving (maintaining the lost connection). Future research should intentionally sample other demographics to broaden the understanding of sibling bereavement across age, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Positive social change implications include efforts to promote training and programs sensitive to the unique needs of bereaved young adults in secondary school and college settings.

Taylor, Helen. "Narratives of loss, longing and daily life : the meaning of home for Cypriot refugees in London". Thesis, University of East London, 2009. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/3928/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The concept of home is integral to much research in the field of refugee studies, which has looked at the settlement of refugees in the new home of exile, return to the lost home and, more recently, a negotiation between two or more homes through transnational practices. However, studies have rarely focused on what home actually means for those compelled to leave their homes. This thesis moves beyond a structural assessment of forced migration to look at the lived experience of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot refugees in London, in order to develop a more nuanced understanding of the meaning of home. The thesis takes as its focus four key aspects of home - the spatial, temporal, material and relational - to reveal that home for the refugee is complex, multiple and in process. What the refugee loses when they are displaced is not only the physical property of the spatial home; but also the networks and social capital of the relational home; the framed memories, repetitions of daily life and future potential of the temporal home; as well as the tastes, scents and embodied experience of the material home. It is the impossibility of all these aspects ever being reassembled, even if the physical property were to be returned, which illustrates the depth of loss that exile often represents. However, in spite of the losses they have suffered, the majority of Cypriot refugees in this study also show tremendous resilience. The findings are based on narrative interviews with Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot refugees, who have lived in protracted exile in London for several decades. Contributing to a narrative turn in the field, which places the refugee at the centre rather than the margins of the research, this study recognises refugees as agents in their own lives, who are victims of circumstances rather than victims per se.

Resumen
This study is the result of observations and questions that stem from my professional role as a senior key worker with families where a child has a life-threatening or life-shortening illness. This project explores the cultures of families where a child has been diagnosed with a potentially fatal medical condition. By examining parents' accounts, other family members' accounts and professionals' accounts of the ways treatment regimes are experienced, the study indicates typical differences in the ways life-threatening and life-shortening illnesses affect family relationships. The study also examines variations in what these illnesses 'mean' for families and the ways that treatment regimes help to shape these meanings. A combination of qualitative research methods was used via in depth, semi-structured and informal interviews with families and professionals, and included participant observation. Data was collected from five informant groups: a) mothers where a child had been diagnosed with cancer or was living with a life-shortening condition; b) families of the ill children, suffering from both cancer and from a number of severe chronic medical conditions; c) well siblings living alongside an ill sibling; d) ill children themselves; e) professionals from health and psychosocial backgrounds who worked with the families. A detailed summary of the sample may be found in Appendix 1 page 291 Although limited, the findings have helped to provide a hypothesis outlining typical differences in the ways life-threatening illnesses and lifeshortening illnesses affect family relationships. They also offer health professionals and others working with ill children insight into the crises and challenges which might typically face families during the course of their children's treatment. Medical technology is successfully prolonging the lives of children diagnosed with lifethreatening and life-shortening illnesses who would not have survived the same illness some years ago. In the light of these improvements, findings from this study indicate that when the illness is life-threatening as in childhood cancer, the treatment regimes and the sudden and frequent hospitalisation of the mother and ill child impact on the daily life of the family, changing the family dynamic and creating a sense of an emotional rollercoaster ride - with horror, hope, fear, relapse and remission all part of their journey. Conversely, findings suggest that in cases of rare, often difficult to diagnose, lifeshortening conditions, the family is drawn into a life-long up-hill struggle where the medical management of the child takes priority over, and increasingly dictates, other family members' relationships, roles and activities. Unlike the intermittent but extreme crises of life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, life-shortening conditions continue for the lifetime of the child, creating enduring long-term pressures on the family. However, in both categories of illness the families' lives are entwined with various professionals who appear largely unaware of how the medical management of these illnesses drain the practical, financial and emotional resources of the family. The findings of this research raise implications for practice and future policy. I conclude by suggesting that there is a need for an increased understanding, acknowledgement and respect from professionals that the primary carers in both categories of illness are to a greater or lesser extent, experts in their own children's illnesses. NHS Trusts, Children's Hospices and Children's Agencies produce a variety of care pathways for sick children, and although training in communication with patients is already in place, there is considerable room for improving the day-to day skills and approaches of the various professionals, particularly health professionals involved in paediatrics and their communication with the parents and the ill child. There is also a need for increased understanding by professionals of the particular daily challenges faced by families with children undergoing treatment for these conditions.

Bartsch, Kevin P. "Modeling Soil Loss to Determine Water Erosion Risk at Camp Williams National Guard Base, Utah". DigitalCommons@USU, 1998. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/3656.

Texto completo
Resumen
Soil erosion was assessed at Camp Williams National Guard Base by creating an erosion risk classification map and comparing the erosion impact of disturbance regimes on different hillslopes. Soil erosion does not appear to be a problem for most of Camp Williams. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation was applied using GIS to create a soil erosion risk map for the entire Camp Williams facility. The map indicated where problem areas occurred and showed relative erosion risk, but its lack of quantitative accuracy should be noted. Areas of concern included landscapes with little or no protective vegetation such as roads, abandoned agricultural fields, and sensitive riparian areas where gullies tend to form and expand. The Water Erosion Prediction Project model was used to evaluate the erosion impacts of various disturbances on five study hillslopes. The model did not appear to function well on the Camp Williams study hillslopes because the distribution of infiltration rates could not be satisfactorily represented. However, hydraulic conductivity measurements collected for this task were useful in providing insight into some of the physical processes of erosion. The hydraulic conductivity measurements showed some of the impacts of military activities, grazing, and wildfire on soil properties. Erosion bridges were also used on the five study hillslopes in an attempt to measure soil Joss and deposition. However, the bridges Jacked the capability of measuring the low rates of erosion during the time period set for this experiment. The bridges showed potential for measuring erosion in rills, gullies, highly disturbed areas, or in longer duration experiments.

Resumen
Purpose: This critical interpretive and historical case study of Australian Red Cross extends from the organisation’s beginning in 1914 through to the present day. The overarching purpose is to reveal and analyse the annual reporting practices of one of Australia’s oldest and most important humanitarian organisations in the discharge of accountability over the course of a century. Design/methodology/approach: A Political Economy of Accounting theoretical framework guides the content analysis and interpretation of findings. Background: While the review of literature acknowledges the annual report as a crucial element in the discharge of accountability, studies investigating the evolution of annual reports of International nongovernmental development and humanitarian aid organisations (INGDHOs) over extended periods of time appear to be absent from the literature. Findings: The annual reports were found to be responsive to the changing social, political, economic and institutional environment, casting doubt on any claims to objectivity in organisational management’s disclosures, including assertions regarding unadulterated adherence to its Fundamental Principles. Furthermore, sources of pressure from the wider environmental context impacted upon the development of accountability regimes and shaped the way in which organisational management reported to stakeholders. These regimes evidence the alignment of mission preservation and emotive disclosures with strategic priorities. Implications: This study extends understandings of how INGDHOs discharge accountability through annual reporting practices. It provides a more holistic framework for understanding the role of accountability in organisational management reporting, the development of accountability regimes and the implications for organisational and social functioning. Originality/value (significance): The contribution is distinctive not only for the context and extensive period covered, but also for the significant institutional setting of Australian Red Cross – encompassing deep social, political, economic and institutional changes. This adds to the extant literature and provides significant insights into the contested interplay between annual reporting practices and accountability regimes.

Resumen
The grief experienced by mothers and fathers when their child is diagnosed with a life threatening chronic-illness was investigated in order to validate the presence of grief in these parents and look at the factors that influence it. More specifically, I was interested in whether the grief experience differed for mothers and fathers and the impact that perceptions and coping have on both these gender differences in grief and on grief in general. The particular population investigated in this study were parents of children with Cystic Fibrosis. Participants were recruited through questionnaires randomly sent out by the National Cystic Fibrosis Association. In all, 37 mothers and 15 fathers took part. Results not only confirmed presence of grief in these parents but also indicated that this grief differs for mothers and fathers, with mothers reporting significantly higher levels of physical distress. In line with the literature no gender differences were found in regards to perception of impact parents felt their child's chronic-illness had had on their lives. Contrary to what was expected, however, no differences were found amongst the coping strategies used by mothers and fathers. In regards to the question of which factors have the greatest impact on the grief experienced by mothers and fathers combined, the coping strategy of self-blame was found to be the most important, followed closely by negative perceptions. The significance of these findings and their implications for parents and the people who work with them was discussed.

Resumen
People aged 65 and older account for 12.8% of the population and for 30% of all visually impaired individuals. Age-related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) has been identified as a significant public health issue, with a potential 8 million Americans at risk. While the literature supports a connection between LOC and adaptation to ARMD, there is a gap in the current literature supporting this relationship even when other factors are controlled (i.e. age, sex, education, type of ARMD, when diagnosed, the use of medical treatments, the use of visual assistance devices, participant engagement in rehabilitation, and depression). The present survey study used hierarchical regression to examine the relationship between LOC and adjustment to ARMD while controlling for these factors. A sample of 75 adults aged 60 and older diagnosed with ARMD for at least 6 months completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale-Form C (MHLC), the Adaptation to Age-Related Vision Loss Scale (AVL) and the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS). LOC accounted for 30% of the variance in adjustment beyond what was explained by the control variables, with higher internal LOC being associated with greater adaptation to loss. The present results add to the existing literature and enhance social change initiatives by guiding the development of interventions to mitigate the difficulties experienced by people with ARMD, reduce their dependency on others, and improve their ability to maintain their quality of life.

HIV and AIDS are disease conditions that have led to high mortality rates in Southern Africa since the late 1970s. The socio-economic system has led to the unequal spread of resources&rsquo
and vulnerability and exposure to HIV is more prevalent in poorer communities. The added burden of life stresses cause for many to be isolated and stigmatised and are often not equipped with the necessary support and coping skills to deal with the magnitude of these circumstances. There is a high prevalence of mental disorders and especially depression amongst individuals infected with either HIV or AIDS. Research shows that stressful life events can impact HIV course progression and impacts the QoL of those infected with HIV or AIDS. Given the social and psychological context of HIV and AIDS, the aim of the study was to examine the relationship between depression and QoL in a sample of adults diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. This quantitative, cross-sectional study used the Becks Depression Inventory II (BDI II) and the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (Q-LES-Q), to measure the variables concerned. This battery of
questionnaires was administered to a purposive sample of adult individuals diagnosed with HIV or AIDS residing in a previously disadvantaged area in the Cape Metropole region. Using SPSS,
data was analysed and descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted. The study found that there were more women than men with HIV or AIDS that were found to be depressed (mild, moderate and severe depression). Furthermore, the depressive state increased when the progression of the disease increased. There were generally no significant differences in the QoL
experienced within various areas of life and overall life satisfaction experienced. However, the QoL experienced in work was lower. There was a significant relationship between the depressed state and QoL and life satisfaction experienced in household duties and tasks. The contribution of this study includes informing the larger research project, with regards to future treatment
regimes. It will update statistics on the prevalence of depression and QoL of adults diagnosed with HIV or AIDS in the area. This study is framed within a biopsychosocial model and is
theoretically underpinned by Beck&rsquo
s theory of depression. Key words: HIV, AIDS, adults, depression, quality of life (QoL), Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI II), Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (Q-LES-Q), Antiretrovirals (ARV&rsquo
s), prevalence data, correlations.

Resumen
The objective of this dissertation was to explore the experiences and perspectives of men who have had bariatric surgery. The researcher specifically explored life after bariatric surgery, with a focus on men's perspectives of self-concept, intimate relationships, and social support. Phenomenology was utilized and the researcher conducted 60-90 minute interviews with men who had bariatric surgery in the previous five years, were over the age of 25, were at least six months post-surgery at the time of the study, had been in at least one intimate or committed relationship after surgery, and resided in the United States. Symbolic interactionism and family systems theory were used to guide the study. Five themes emerged in the study which included: (1) a shift in identity construction; (2) enhanced relationship experiences; (3) increased intimacy; (4) fluidity of informal social supports; and (5) mental health services. The study included a rich description of the phenomenon, critical analysis, a discussion of the theoretical model, and discussion of clinical implications for marriage and family therapists.
