Resumen
The loosely coupled systems (LCS) perspective emerged as a new way to understand the organizational structure from the field of Organization Studies. The purpose of this article is to present the main features of previous research studies that have addressed the perspective of loosely coupled systems. This article is based on a systematic literature review of 76 papers published during a 36-year period (1983-2019). The findings indicate that the main concepts studied around this perspective have been loose coupling, tight coupling, decoupling, degree of coupling, and coupling mechanisms, which are analyzed considering the dialectical relationship between distinctiveness and responsiveness. Likewise, the study of organizational couplings has been extensively developed through qualitative methodology with case studies, interviews and documentary reviews. In particular, there are two theoretical frameworks broadly used along with this perspective, the sociological new institutionalism and the theory of normal accidents, which give rise to future research on topics such as decoupling and the normality of accidents, among others. This article contributes to the discussion of organizational ties by highlighting the contemporary relevance of the LCS perspective, its usefulness for understanding current and future organizational issues in the field of Organization Studies, and encouraging greater adoption of LCS analysis in Latin America. Additionally, this paper provides conceptual clarity on the main categories of organizational couplings and its operationalization.

Resumen
The loose coupling transformer, the core component of the rotary wireless excitation system, has a large leakage inductance due to the existence of a large gap, and the coupling coefficient cannot be effectively improved, thus limiting the improvement of the system efficiency. In order to solve this problem, firstly, the equivalent modeling and leakage inductance analysis of the rotary loosely coupled transformer are carried out, and the improved design is carried out according to the defects of common windings, and an improved shaft rotary coupler is proposed. The feasibility of this optimized structure was determined using Ansys/Maxwell simulation analysis software. The S-S resonance compensation scheme is designed, and the co-simulation with Simplorer and Maxwell is used to compare the coupling coefficient and transmission efficiency of the loosely coupled transformer before and after the improvement under the condition of large air gap, and the rationality of the proposed scheme is verified.

Resumen
Physiological properties of the flagellar rotary motor have been taken to indicate a tightly coupled mechanism in which each revolution is driven by a fixed number of energizing ions. Measurements that would directly test the tight-coupling hypothesis have not been made. Energizing ions flow through membrane-bound complexes formed from the proteins MotA and MotB, which are anchored to the cell wall and constitute the stator. Genetic and biochemical evidence points to a “power stroke” mechanism in which the ions interact with an aspartate residue of MotB to drive conformational changes in MotA that are transmitted to the rotor protein FliG. Each stator complex contains two separate ion-binding sites, raising the question of whether the power stroke is driven by one, two, or either number of ions. Here, we describe simulations of a model in which the conformational change can be driven by either one or two ions. This loosely coupled model can account for the observed physiological properties of the motor, including those that have been taken to indicate tight coupling; it also accords with recent measurements of motor torque at high load that are harder to explain in tight-coupling models. Under loads relevant to a swimming cell, the loosely coupled motor would perform about as well as a two-proton motor and significantly better than a one-proton motor. The loosely coupled motor is predicted to be especially advantageous under conditions of diminished energy supply, or of reduced temperature, turning faster than an obligatorily two-proton motor while using fewer ions.

Resumen
An inductively coupled wireless power transfer system is proposed in this paper, which is designed to comply with the battery’s load characteristics. A loosely coupled transformer with high coupling coefficient is proposed. A heterogeneous compensation topology is proposed which is able to switch between constant current and constant voltage output mode according to the load resistance. The output characteristic curve agrees with the charging curve of the battery in a whole cycle. The proposed topology has a misalignment range of 300 mm where the coupling coefficient is 0.2. A 3 kW experimental platform is established to verify the theoretical analysis, and the experimental results show that the proposed loosely coupled transformer has high coupling coefficient and high power transmission efficiency (95.2% in aligned position) within a large misalignment range, which agrees with the charging scenario of the electric vehicle.

Resumen
Inductive coupled power transfer system is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction to transfer power from the primary side to the secondary side of a loosely coupled transformer, which can transfer electricity wirelessly. The loosely coupled transformer has large leakage inductance, which reduces the power transfer efficiency. In order to reduce the leakage inductance, a capacitance is used at the primary side and secondary side of a loosely coupled transformer, which can increase the power transfer efficiency. For four different compensation structures, this paper analyses the coupling coefficient and the secondary quality factor’s influence on the voltage gain, current gain and transfer efficiency, and also compares different compensation structures

Resumen
In living cells, molecular motors convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Its thermodynamic energy efficiency, i.e. the ratio of output mechanical work to input chemical energy, is usually high. However, using two-state models, we found the motion of molecular motors is loosely coupled to the chemical cycle. Only part of the input energy can be converted into mechanical work. Others are dissipated into environment during substeps without contributions to the unidirectional movement.

Resumen
<p>This paper presents investigations on capacitor compensation topologies with different inductive coupling links for loosely coupled inductive power transfer (IPT) system. In general, the main constraint of the loosely coupled IPT system is power losses due to the large leakage inductances. Therefore, to overcome the aforementioned problem, in this work, capacitor compensation is proposed to be used by adding an external capacitor to the system. By using this approach, the resonant inductive coupling can be achieved efficiently and hence the efficiency of the system is also increased significantly. This paper analyzes the performance of two different compensation topologies, which are primary series-secondary series (SS) and primary series- secondary parallel (SP) topology. The performance of such topologies is evaluated through the experimental results at 1MHz operating frequency for different types of inductive coupling. From the results, SS topology produces a high power transfer but SP topology gives better efficiency.</p>

Component-based software engineering is an emerging software development approach based on the fundamentals of object-oriented technology. This approach moves programmers' focus from component development to component assembly. Event-based programming is one of the techniques that can be used to assemble software components into applications. In this thesis, a new, generic, highly adaptable and flexible event channel has been designed and implemented. The main product is a Java utility package, called "channel package", which should help Java application developers create or enhance large systems using an event-based programming approach. The new channel design has several demonstrated performance advantages over existing event channel implementations. The flexibility and adaptability of the channel package has also been validated by a successful upgrade of the channel mechanism of the SAAM prototype system.

Resumen
Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are important in many areas, such as medical, communication, transportation, and consumer electronics. The underlying WPT system is comprised of a transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). For biomedical applications, such systems can be implemented on rigid or flexible substrates and can be implanted or wearable. The efficiency of a WPT system is based on power transfer efficiency (PTE). Many WPT system optimization techniques have been explored to achieve the highest PTE possible. These are based on either a figure-of-merit (FOM) approach, quality factor (Q-factor) maximization, or by sweeping values for coil geometries. Four WPT systems for biomedical applications are implemented with inductive coupling. The thesis later presents an optimization technique for finding the maximum PTE of a range of frequencies and coil shapes through frequency, geometry and shape sweeping. Five optimized TX coil designs for different operating frequencies are fabricated for three shapes: square, hexagonal, and octagonal planar-spirals. The corresponding RX is implemented on polyimide tape with ink-jet-print (IJP) silver. At 80 MHz, the maximum measured PTE achieved is 2.781% at a 10 mm distance in the air for square planar-spiral coils.

Resumen
This Master Thesis approaches the analysis and design of a novel solution for the “Circuito di binario (CdB”) i.e., a railway track circuit, that is used as a detection system of the trains for track management and is integrated into the signalling and safety systems on board. The presented CdB exploits an inductive loop system coupled to an S-shaped joint (replacing the previously used mechanical joints) in the audio-frequency range (from 8 to 16 kHz). The tracks, therefore, constitute a transmission route similar to a transmission line equipped with a Transmitter (Tx) and a Receiver (Rx), and can be used to transmit information. As a starting point, different electromagnetic simulations of a prototype system of the CdB (scale 1:4), realized in the ARCES laboratories of the University of Bologna, have been carried out. A 3D replica of the CdB has been realized in CST and electromagnetically analysed. Afterward, the Rail Trak with its actual dimension (scale 1:1) has been simulated and the length of the S joint has been optimized in such a way that that the loops that are not in the Tx-Rx circuit are highly decoupled, whereas the coupling of those that are part of the communication circuit is maximum. Subsequently, with the purpose to lighten the whole CdB electromagnetic simulations, the rail-track has been analysed alone in order to extract an equivalent circuit to be used in AWR together with the outputs (scattering matrices) of the electromagnetic simulations of the S joint with loop (both Tx and Rx). The agile obtained optimization tool has allowed the design of the two matching networks with lumped components (one between the transmitting circuit and the Tx loop, the other between the Rx loop and the receiving circuit) for the maximization of the received power: the highest challenge of this project has been the satisfaction of the matching over such a broad frequency band (equal to one octave).

Resumen
Many of the technological and social systems our society has come to depend on can be classified as complex adaptive systems (CAS). These systems are made of many individual parts that self-organize to respond and adapt to changing outside and inside influences affecting the system and its actors. These CAS can be placed on a spectrum ranging from loosely- to tightly-coupled, depending on the degree of interrelatedness and interdependence between system components. This research has explored how the process of collaboration occurs in both a loosely- and tightly-coupled setting using one exemplar of each system. The loosely-coupled exemplar related to disaster risk reduction in two Canadian communities while the tightly-coupled one involved the implementation of a surgical information management system in a Canadian hospital. A list of core elements of collaboration that should be considered essential to the success of all collaborative endeavours was developed as a result: Engagement, Communication, Leadership, Role Clarity, Awareness, Time, and Technical Skills and Knowledge. Based on observing how the core elements of collaboration interacted with one another within each of these example systems, two models were created to represent their relationships. A list of considerations that collaborative tool designers should consider was also developed and the implications of these considerations were discussed. As businesses and other organizations increasingly incorporate team-based work models, they will come to depend more heavily on technology-based solutions to support collaboration. By incorporating collaborative technologies that properly support the activity of these teams—based on the specific type of complex adaptive system in which their organization exists—organizations can avoid wasting time and resources developing tools that hinder collaboration.

The number of real-time Over-The-Top (OTT) communication services has increased in the recent years. OTT solutions use the best-effort Internet delivery and rely on mechanisms built into the endpoints to adapt to underlying network fluctuations. Nevertheless, it is questionable if this approach is enough to provide acceptable quality of communication regardless the network conditions. Therefore, can network assistance be used to improve the quality of OTT real-time communication services? To address this question, we study OTT solutions with a focus on WebRTC. We identify three loose coupling strategies that leverage network mechanisms for improving OTT communication services quality. We verify the pertinence of these coupling strategies in the context of traffic management. We identify two approaches of traffic management solutions adapted to WebRTC traffic: 1) aiming at assuring lower queuing delays regardless the traffic or 2) isolating the sensitive traffic. We study the impact of identified traffic management solutions on WebRTC for wireline access networks (uplink, ADSL and fiber). The obtained results show that current Internet engineering practices are not well adapted to the WebRTC traffic, but are optimized for TCP traffic. Furthermore, the proposed solutions ensure more fairness between WebRTC and TCP flows and consequently enable avoiding WebRTC traffic starvation and improve the overall quality of the communication. In the final analysis, the evaluated traffic management solutions are positioned in the context of identified coupling strategies. Based on this assessment, we provide recommendations of improving WebRTC quality with the assistance of NSP

Owen, Jennifer. "An investigation of loose coupling in evolutionary swarm robotics". Thesis, University of York, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5018/.

Texto completo
Resumen
In complex systems, it has been observed that the parts within the system are "loosely coupled". Loose coupling means that the parts of the system interact in some way, and as long as this interaction is maintained the parts can evolve independently. Detrimental evolutionary changes within one part of the system do not negatively affect other parts. Overall system functionality is maintained, leading to faster evolution. In swarm robotic systems there are multiple robots working together to achieve a shared goal. However it is not always obvious how to program the actions of the robots such that the desired aggregate behaviour emerges. One solution is to use a genetic algorithm to evolve robot controllers, this approach is called "Evolutionary Swarm Robotics". This thesis makes the case that swarm robotic systems are complex systems, and hypothesises that loose coupling between the robots in a swarm would lead to faster evolution. Robot swarms are investigated where robots describe environmental features to each other as part of a foraging task. Multiple descriptions can be used to describe a feature. The mappings between feature descriptions, and the signals used to express those descriptions, are manipulated. By doing this, the interactions between robots can change over time or stay the same. Results show that loose coupling leads to higher swarmfitnesses because it makes the communicated information easier to interpret. However there are some subtleties in its working. We also observe that if some of the information is not useful for completing the task, this negatively affects swarm fitness regardless of coupling. This problem can be mitigated by using loose coupling. This research has implications for the design of communication within robot swarms. Before evolution, it is difficult to know what information is relevant. This research shows that sharing unnecessary information between robots is detrimental to swarm fitness because the cost of interpreting information can be greater than the benefit gained from the information. Loose coupling can reduce, but not eliminate, the evolutionary cost of interpreting multiple pieces of information in exchange for slower message transmission.

Resumen
This thesis presents an in-depth case study of a Malaysian public utility company expected by the government to transform itself into a self-financing, efficient and profitable organisation during corporatisation. As profitability became increasingly important, attempts to enhance profitability were made through imposing new accounting rules and recruiting new accounting graduates. In spite of these attempts, the finding reveals that accounting changes were enacted, but over time became separated from, or loosely coupled with, other intraorganisational concerns. An explanatory case study method, using mainly semistructured interviews and document reviews, was adopted. The framework for understanding the process of implementing accounting change, the context in which change unfolded and the emerging consequences of change is based on the combined insights of New Institutional Sociology (Meyer and Rowan, 1977) and Old Institutional Economics (Bums and Scapens, 2000). As sensitising devices, these institutional theories are useful, but alone are not able to fully incorporate the idiosyncrasies of the case findings. Subsequently, the research aims to develop a theoretical framework to understand the processes through which accounting systems can become loosely coupled by incorporating the insights drawn from the two institutional theories as well as the idiosyncrasies of the case. In this framework loose coupling is conceptualised as an evolutionary process shaped by existing internal institutions, the beliefs and norms in the environment, and the interests and power of organisational actors. Issues of the intertwined relationship between efficiency and institutional pressures, the balancing act between public service and profitability concerns, and the inter-play of resistance, trust and power are included. The theoretical framework enriches our understanding of why the role of accounting took its present form and why accounting change was enacted, but continued to (re )embed the existing public service values and norms within the case organisation. It is able to capture the complexity of the ongoing process of accounting change during which the ingrained public service values and practices remained stable in spite of corporatisation.

Today, the implementation of services (SOAP and RESTful models) and of client applications is increasingly based on object-oriented programming languages. Thus, object-oriented frameworks for Web services are essentially composed with two levels: an object level built over a service level. In this context, two properties could be particularly required in the specification of these frameworks: (i)First a loose coupling between the two levels, which allows the complex technical details of the service level to be hidden at the object level and the service level to be evolved with a minimal impact on the object level, (ii) Second, an interoperability induced by the substitution principle associated to subtyping in the object level, which allows to freely convert a value of a subtype into a supertype. In this thesis, first we present the existing weaknesses of object-oriented frameworks related to these two requirements. Then, we propose a new specification for object-oriented Web service frameworks in order to resolve these problems. As an application, we provide an implementation of our specification in the cxf framework, for both SOAP and RESTful models

Resumen
This chapter demonstrates that decision-makers may be more interested in the responsibility effects of their decisions than in the decision content, one reason being that there may be a connection between responsibility and influence: the assumption of responsibility can mean a loss of influence. An organizational management can increase its influence by avoiding decisions and the responsibility that goes with them. The chapter exemplifies this relationship by discussing a common type of decision process, namely budgeting. Budgeting is a common form of decision process in organizations. The budget is a decision on a grand scale: on one single occasion the organizational leadership makes decisions about virtually all operations over a future period, generally the coming year. The link between decisions and operations consists of money. However, the coupling between budget decisions and action is a very loose one.

Resumen
Institutions—the structures, practices, and meanings that define what people and organizations think, do, and aspire to—are created through process. They are “work in progress” that involves continual efforts to maintain, modify, or disturb them. Institutional logics are also in motion, holding varying degrees of dominance that change over time. This volume brings together two streams of thought within organization theory—institutional theory and process perspective—to advocate for stronger process ontology that highlights institutions as emergent, generative, political, and social. A stronger process view allows us to challenge our understanding of central concepts within institutional theory, such as “loose coupling,” “institutional work,” the work of institutional logics on the ground, and institutionalization between diffusion and translation. Enriched with an emphasis on practice and widened by taking a broad view of institutions, this volume draws on the Ninth International Symposium on Process Organization Studies to offer key insights that will inform our thinking of institutions as processes.

Resumen
Problems concerning fluid-structure-interaction are often encountered in aquaculture engineering. For a moving slender structure like fishing net or floater in currents and waves, modified Morison Equation is a widely employed formula to estimate its hydrodynamic loads. The hydrodynamic forces are closely dependent on the structures’ velocity and acceleration, and quadratic relative velocity in the equation even adds nonlinearity in the forces. To study the hydroelastic response, two time-saving loosely coupling methods, calculating the hydrodynamic forces based on the structure’s response in the previous time step without iteration, are proposed in this paper. The loose coupling methods were proved to affect the traditional stability criteria for time integration. Based on the two loose coupling methods, the stability and accuracy of a slender beam’s hydroelasticity undergoing large deformation were studied. The calculated responses were compared against strong coupling results. It was found that if loose coupling is assumed in added mass force, unconditional instability is likely to occur. On the other hand, the accuracy of numerical results can be improved with smaller time increments set if loose coupling is only assumed in the quadratic relative drag force.

Resumen
A new, fast and reliable loosely coupled fluid-solid heat transfer method is described. The approach is based on an improvement of heat transfer coefficient Forward Temperature Backward method. The numerical analysis of the coupling process of an one-dimensional model, shows that the convergence behaviour is influenced by the physical Biot number and a virtual heat transfer coefficient. The effect of using partially converged CFD solutions has also been studied. The novelty of the method is based on the use of dynamic evaluation of the numerical parameters of the coupling, namely the virtual heat transfer coefficient. Two representative models in turbomachinery applications are applied to test the proposed method. It is shown that the computational time can be reduced by a factor of three to five relative to previous existing methods. The new approach only spends around two times the cost of stand-alone CFD simulation of the problem to obtained a coupled fluid/solid thermal analysis.

Resumen
A numerical simulation process based on loosely coupling a helicopter flight mechanics code and a 3D panel and free wake aerodynamics method is extended for arbitrary steady flight states and quasi-steady maneuver analysis. First, the basic coupling procedure and their building blocks are introduced. Then, the extensions for arbitrary steady flight states are illustrated and a newly developed procedure for approximate maneuver simulations using a sequence of steady aeromechanically coupled simulations is presented. The aim of this procedure is to provide a rapid method for evaluation of loads, performance and stability in the helicopter design and development process. It includes an improved physics-based modeling of aerodynamic interactions as compared to low-fidelity aerodynamics models used in comprehensive codes. At the same time the computational effort is dramatically reduced as compared to highf idelity aerodynamics methods. Finally, validation results for the coupling procedure and first applications of the maneuver simulation process are shown. The computed results are compared with flight tests and blade element momentum theory based results. In many cases the solution accuracy can be significantly improved by using the coupled simulation procedure. But for maneuvers involving fast pilot inputs or considerable translational or rotational accelerations of the helicopter, the quasi-steady coupling approach is not suitable and an extension to fully unsteady loose coupling or the implementation of a tight coupling approach is proposed.
