Resumen
The limitations of traditional methods of providing long-term creep design data are discussed in relation to existing national and international testing standards, current parametric procedures for extrapolation of stress-rupture values and the factors affecting the high degree of scatter in conventional long-term property sets for widely-used structural steels. These deficiencies may be overcome by adopting an alternative data acquisition methodology based on the analysis of short-term high-precision constant-stress creep curves.

Resumen
This study investigates the impact of Verizon Communications Inc.'s acquisition of Yahoo on the company's stock performance, using a combination of statistical, visual, and multiscale analytical methods. The research analyzes how strategic corporate decisions, particularly acquisitions, influence short-term and long-term stock behavior. Data spanning from 2014 to 2024 was analyzed to capture pre-acquisition, acquisition, and post-acquisition trends. The methodology integrates boxplot visualizations to explore variability and outliers, quantile analysis to assess distributional characteristics, and descriptive statistics to summarize key metrics such as mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. Tabulation analysis evaluates associations between stock returns and trading volumes, while wavelet analysis decomposes stock returns into multiple time scales to identify short-term fluctuations and long-term trends. Results reveal significant volatility during key events, such as the Yahoo acquisition in 2017 and the COVID-19 pandemic, with daily fluctuations peaking at ±6. Medium-term adjustments (4–8 days) exhibited moderate changes, and long-term trends (32-day cycles) showed structural shifts, including positive coefficients in 2017 (+0.5) and negative coefficients in 2020 (-0.6). The research highlights the heavy-tailed nature of return distributions and skewed trading volume patterns. This study provides insights into the multifaceted effects of acquisitions on stock performance, offering valuable implications for investors and corporate managers in optimizing strategic decisions.

Resumen
Purpose This paper aims to focus on Tata Motors, an automobile company from an emerging market, and its successful acquisition of two global marquee car brands in Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR). It traces the evolution of JLR under the stewardship of Tata Motors over an eight-year long period and examines the strategic reasons for the success of the acquisition. Design/methodology/approach The paper approaches strategic issues in cross-border acquisitions using an illustration of a successful deal. It is based on statements of leaders and secondary data about the acquirer and acquired organizations. The paper explores the strategic challenges faced when emerging market firms carry out cross border acquisition deals. It recommends the short-term and long-term strategies that acquirers can follow to improve the chances of a successful acquisition. Findings Any acquisition is challenging. Cross-border acquisitions face greater challenges, especially if the acquirer is from an emerging market country while the target company is from a developed country. Success of the acquisition, especially over the long run, depends on both internal factors that are under the control of the acquirer’s management, as well as external environmental factors that it needs to address. Both patience and luck are required ingredients for success in such contexts. Practical implications While the general temptation in any acquisition is to extract synergies as quickly as possible, the Tata Motors’ acquisition of JLR is an exception. Tata Motors carefully handled short-term challenges and continued to invest in the core competencies of JLR and reaped benefits over the long run. It was also fortunate that a variety of factors in the external environment turned favorable for Tata Motors and JLR in the eight years since the deal took place. Social implications It concedes that during an M&A deal, the leaders of a seller organization may be nervous about their future. JLR trade union leaders were initially not sure whether jobs in UK would remain secure. To ensure success of the deal, the leaders of the acquirer firm need to balance the interests of multiple stakeholders, both in the short-term, as well as over a longer-term perspective. Originality/value The paper considers the Tata Motors’ acquisition of JLR. It is an example of a large, difficult cross-border acquisition by an emerging market based company. While the acquisition proved difficult in the short term, it has yielded excellent dividends to the parent company over the long term. This paper explores the reasons why this cross-border acquisition succeeded and recommends strategies that other companies considering cross-border acquisitions can consider to improve their chances of success.

Resumen
Purpose – This study aims to build on the organizational learning theory and propose a complex strategy by combining strategic alliance with subsequent acquisitions to penetrate new product markets. The authors empirically examined whether and to what extent preacquisition alliance experience affects the short- and long-term stock performance of acquiring firms. Design/methodology/approach – Data on acquisitions, in which the acquirers have experience from preacquisition alliance activities in their targets’ respective industry, were collected. Diversifying acquisitions were focused upon to ensure that preacquisition alliance experience is the major source of organizational learning. A standard event study to examine acquirers’ abnormal returns was used and a Fama-French calendar-time portfolio approach to gauge long-run abnormal stock performance was adopted. In addition, regression analysis was conducted to investigate the alliance–acquisition relationship, controlling a set of variables capturing firm and acquisition characteristics. Findings – It has been documented that in the short run, alliance experience may not always benefit acquirers’ stock performance surrounding the acquisition announcements. In particular, for acquiring firms experiencing negative cumulative abnormal returns, investors value alliance experience negatively. However, for up to 36 months after acquisitions, acquirers with alliance experience outperform their counterparts in almost every acquisition category regardless of the short-term announcement returns. Originality/value – The current study has used a large-scale representative sample to investigate the dynamic interaction between alliances and acquisitions as two organizational forms for firms to grow. Findings indicate that firms can deliberately learn from their alliance activities and, later on, enter new markets through acquisitions. More importantly, it was found that, at least for some acquirers, preacquisition alliance activities are associated with worse short-term stock price performance because of possible information spillover and lifted entry barriers. It was confirmed that short-term pain nets long-term gains for acquirers heading into new markets.

Resumen
The Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry conducted research to develop a long-term monitoring technology to clarify pore water pressure and water chemistry in drilled boreholes. An automatic data acquisition system for the long-term monitoring was also developed. The automatic data acquisition system has an independent electric power supply and data communication system. The electric power is supplied from solar and wind power. The data communication is secured through a satellite or 3G/4G line. A very low power consumption system can be readily installed by creating personal area networks between measuring devices using Zigbee digital radio. A demonstration of the system was conducted under harsh natural conditions for 18 months. It was confirmed that the system has sufficient reliability for actual operation.

Resumen
It has been proposed (Krashen, 1981; 1982; 1985; Schwartz and Gubala- Ryzak, 1992; Schwartz, 1986; 1988; 1993) that L2 acquisition proceeds in essentially the same manner as L1 acquisition (the L1 = L2 position). That is, learners acquire underlying unconscious knowledge of a language (called lin guistic competence) simply by being exposed to the linguistic input (called primary linguistic data) in the environment. Instruction and error correction play no role in the development of competence in the L2. This article reports the long-term results of a study investigating the role of primary linguistic data in the acquisition of linguistic competence - in par ticular, the rules of adverb placement in English. This study examines the knowledge of adverb placement of 52 grade-6 francophone students (aver age age: 12 years, 2 months) learning English as a second language (ESL) in Québec schools. A year earlier, these subjects had been exposed over a two- week period to a flood of primary linguistic data on adverb placement in English. Immediately after the input flood, it was found that while the sub jects had learnt which adverb positions were grammatical in English, they still used positions which were ungrammatical in English but grammatical in the L1. The results of the follow-up test reported in this article reveal that one year after the input flood, the subjects' knowledge of adverb placement has not changed. They still use both the grammatical and the ungrammatical adverb positions, indicating that exposure to an abundance of primary lin guistic data on adverb placement did not lead to mastery of this structure. Possible explanations for these results and their implications for the L1 = L2 position are discussed.

Resumen
Owing to the improvement of computing power, computer-aided multi-unit acquisition and separation rapidly proliferated during the last two decades. To utilize this technology is, however, not easy since task-specific designs are usually mandatory. To overcome this obstacle, a commercial data acquisition system was used to evaluate whether it is possible to accomplish the task of multi-unit acquisition without the aid of these devices. As the results shown that the technique of spike-trigger acquisition can provide the capability to reduce the data amount to 2% while compared with that sampled by continuous acquisition. However, the interval between two consecutive spikes cannot be shorter than 5 ms. This suggests that special designed devices are still necessary.

Resumen
This paper analyzes the CEO incentives of inside debt in the form of deferred equity compensation in the context of M&A decisions. This study runs statistical regressions on the likelihood of a merger, whether the deal is diversifying, how much stock is used to pay for the deal, and the relative deal size controlling for CEO long-term incentive pay as the main variable of interest and including controls for firm characteristics, merger characteristics, industry, and year. This paper sheds light on LTIP effects before compensation changes occur after an M&A event. This study uses archival data from 1996 to 2005 for the United States with data collected from CRSP, Compustat, and SDC Platinum. This is one of the first studies to focus on the United States. When firms with higher levels of CEO long-term incentive pay decide to engage in an acquisition, those acquisitions are non-diversifying, relatively smaller deals, and are paid using a greater portion of stock. The evidence indicates that long-term incentive pay incentivizes CEOs to make less risky decisions for the benefit of debt holders and at the expense of shareholders. In addition, deals made are not necessarily diversifying as once believed

Resumen
An urban environment defines a specific micro-climate which directly affects the quality of life in urbanized areas and often has a negative impact on urban populations. Phenomena like urban heat and surface heat islands are direct products of an urban lifestyle. Urban meteorological networks (UMNs) are a tool that can help to better understand and analyze the current situation and make the right decisions about future urban development. Deployed to monitor and record different objects and their states inside urban areas, UMNs build a long-term meteorological data time series database. The most commonly used systems for achieving this goal include wireless sensor networks (WSNs). This paper presents a combined experience in deploying three different WSN systems. During seven years of research in this field, the authors have recognized the importance of data reliability in data acquisition. More importantly, due to the lack of research addressing the reliability of the data received from WSNs by the core segment of the server (processes used in receiving, validating, parsing, and storing data into a database instance), the received data are used in scientific studies without questioning their reliability. To determine the possibility of shifting information provided by the data measured from sensor networks before it is stored in a desired form of database, this paper proposes a highly reliable socket server model. The model is built with high reliability and performance in mind and it includes three major processes, which use a combination of signals and control messages to pass information about their states. A case study is performed using high-end hardware, running a Linux operating system stressed to its limits. Repetition testing revealed inconsistency in the information provided by the operating system to the application layer, which could lead to the loss of information about short-term and rarely occurring monitored objects. The results lead to the conclusion that there is a clear need for a higher level of data reliability in the process of data acquisition by UMNs. The proposed socket server should fill this gap within the server’s core segment.

Resumen
This study describes a low-cost and easy to deploy gait monitoring system that uses an ESP32 microcontroller and an ICM-20948 module. The ESP32 microcontroller collects data from the ICM-20948 module and these data are used to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify gait patterns into two categories: normal and pathological. The results show that the system can achieve a high accuracy for binary gait classification, being able to correctly classify 97.05% of the normal gait samples and 84.54% of the pathological gait samples. The power consumption of the devive was measured using a calibrated and dual-acquisition digital multimeter. The estimated operating time was around 12 hours, with a battery capacity of 1800 mAh LiPo type. Therefore, it could be used to track the gait of patients with neurological disorders or to assess the effectiveness of gait rehabilitation treatments.

Resumen
Abstract The application of high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion devices in wireless seismic data acquisition equipment causes massive invalid noise and seismic signals to be generated during long-term seismic acquisition, and the subsequent processing of massive data will occupy a lot of system resources. To address the above issues, we employ the STM32F4 as the core to integrate an improved environmental dynamic threshold P-wave picking algorithm for continuous vibration data acquisition. During data storage, only the relevant vibration signals are preserved to minimize the storage of irrelevant data and enhance work efficiency. The research results indicate that embedding a vibration identification algorithm inside the microcontroller can quickly and effectively identify seismic data, filter out invalid noise signals, reduce data volume, and improve work efficiency.

Objective. To identify risk factors associated with methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA) acquisition in long-term care facility (LTCF) residents.Design.Multicenter, prospective cohort followed over 6 months.Setting.Three Veterans Affairs (VA) LTCFs.Participants.All current and new residents except those with short stay (<2 weeks).Methods.MRSA carriage was assessed by serial nares cultures and classified into 3 groups: persistent (all cultures positive), intermittent (at least 1 but not all cultures positive), and noncarrier (no cultures positive). MRSA acquisition was defined by an initial negative culture followed by more than 2 positive cultures with no subsequent negative cultures. Epidemiologic data were collected to identify risk factors, and MRSA isolates were typed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE).Results.Among 412 residents at 3 LTCFs, overall MRSA prevalence was 58%, with similar distributions of carriage at all 3 facilities: 20% persistent, 39% intermittent, 41% noncarriers. Of 254 residents with an initial negative swab, 25 (10%) acquired MRSA over the 6 months; rates were similar at all 3 LTCFs, with no clusters evident. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that receipt of systemic antimicrobials during the study was the only significant risk factor for MRSA acquisition (odds ratio, 7.8 [95% confidence interval, 2.1–28.6];P= .002). MRSA strains from acquisitions were related by PFGE to those from a roommate in 9/25 (36%) cases; 6 of these 9 roommate sources were persistent carriers.Conclusions.MRSA colonization prevalence was high at 3 separate VA LTCFs. MRSA acquisition was strongly associated with antimicrobial exposure. Roommate sources were often persistent carriers, but transmission from roommates accounted for only approximately one-third of MRSA acquisitions.

Resumen
The secondary modulation with the Neumann-Hoffman code increases the possibility of bit sign transition. Unlike other GNSS signals, there is no pilot component for synchronization in BeiDou B1/B3 signals, which increases the complexity in acquisition. A previous study has shown that the delay and multiplication (DAM) method is able to eliminate the bit sign transition problem, but it only applies to pretty strong signals. In this paper, a DAM-based BeiDou signal acquisition approach, called variable length data accumulation (VLDA), is proposed to acquire weak satellite signals. Firstly, the performance of DAM method versus the different delays is analyzed. The DAM operation not only eliminates bit sign transition, but it also increases noise power. Secondly, long-term signal is periodically accumulated to improve signal intensity in order to acquire weak signals. While considering the Doppler frequency shift of ranging codes, the signal length must be compensated before accumulating long-term signal. Finally, the fast-Fourier-transform based parallel code phase algorithm are used for acquisition. The simulation results indicate that the proposed VLDA method has better acquisition sensitivity than traditional non-coherent integration method under the same calculation amount. The VLDA method only requires approximately 27.5% of calculations to achieve the same acquisition sensitivity (35 dBHz). What is more, the actual experimental results verify the feasibility of the VLDA method. It can be concluded that the proposed approach is an effective and feasible method for solving the bit sign transition problem.

Abstract Taiwan Photon Source is a third-generation 3 GeV synchrotron light source. Since the successful operation of the first beamline in 2013, comprehensive long-term testing and acceptance work has been carried out to ensure the stable operation of various types of correction magnet power supplies, totalling 1038 units. To standardise and save workforce and time for the measurement of correction magnet power supplies, an automated data acquisition system platform for correction magnet power supplies was developed using LabVIEW. This platform integrates control interface cards, high-resolution digital voltmeters, and analysis instruments. It also includes linearization and calibration compensation for the multi-channel direct constant current transformer to ensure simultaneous measurement of 24 magnet power supplies. Furthermore, it can automatically generate test reports in Word format, saving significant human resources and time. This platform has verified TPS correction magnet power supplies before installation, reducing the failure rate. Regarding measurement results, the output current ripple for the DCCT version is within five ppm, while the shunt resistor version is within ten ppm. The long-term current stability is consistently within ten ppm. The development of the fully automated data acquisition system platform and the measurement of 1038 power supplies were completed in four months.

Resumen
Real estate developers in China are using mergers and acquisitions (M&As) to ensure their survival and competitiveness. However, no suitable method is yet available to assess whether such M&As provide enhanced value for those involved. Using a hybrid method of data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist total factor productivity (TFP) indices, this paper evaluates the short and medium term effects of M&As on acquirers’ economic performance with a set of 32 M&A cases occurring during 2000–2011 in China. The results of the analysis show that M&As generally have a positive effect on acquirers’ economic performance. Acquisitions on average experienced a steady growth in developer Malmquist TFP, a more progressive adoption of technology immediately after acquisition, a slight short-term decrease in technical efficiency after acquisition but followed by a marked increase in the longer term once the integration and synergy benefits were realised. However, there is no evidence to show whether developers achieved any short or long term scale efficiency improvements after M&A. The findings of this study provide useful insights on developer M&A performance from an efficiency and productivity perspective.

Resumen
The Pop-up Ambient Noise Data Acquisition (PANDA) system described in this paper is a compact, cost-effective and self-contained submerged data acquisition system for collecting acoustic data. PANDA can be bottom-mounted, collecting data without surface eocpression, making it ideal for collecting data in high shipping and/or fishing activity locations. Assembled largely from “commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, the design time and unit cost have been minimised without compromising reliability. The electronic design is based on a PC motherboard computer system. The system as currently configured has a maximum sampling rate of 330 kHz and a maximum storage capacity of 1.2 GB. These values can be changed simply by exchanging COTS plug-in components. This flexibility of design, permitting the configuration to be changed quickly and cheaply to suit different deployment requirements, is an important feature of the system. The system can also be configured to record from multiple transducers of all types. PANDA was designed and built in 7 months, and is currently being used to collect long-term samples of ambient noise for ship noise analysis. Some example data are presented to illustrate the system’s capability.

Specific information on the IPO prospectus can affect the stock's market performance, both the initial returns and the long-term performance. The disclosure of the purpose of IPO proceeds to: acquisition, investment, group financing, debt repayment and working capital, as a specific form of information is indicated to affect both initial return and long-term stock returns. We conducted a test of 148 IPOs on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the period 2006–2013. Data analysis was performed using OLS and probit regression. The test results show that there is a negative relationship between the intention of the acquisition and debt repayment with underpricing. The results also show that IPOs with the purpose of the debt repayment is positively related to the long-term market performance. The age of the company has a negative effect on IPOs with the purpose of acquisition and debt repayment, while the size of the company proxied by total assets is positively related to the intentions of group financing and debt repayment

Resumen
We introduce a robust low-budget Kelvin probe design that is optimized for the long-term acquisition of surface photovoltage (SPV) data, especially developed for highly resistive systems, which exhibit—in contrast to conventional semiconductors—very slow photoinduced charge relaxation processes in the range of hours and days. The device provides convenient optical access to the sample, as well as high mechanical and electrical stability due to off-resonance operation, showing a noise band as narrow as 1 mV. Furthermore, the acquisition of temperature-dependent SPV transients necessary for SPV-based deep-level transient spectroscopy becomes easily possible. The performance of the instrument is demonstrated by recording long-term SPV transients of the ultra-slowly relaxing model oxide strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ) over 20 h.

Resumen
This study examines the impact of stock mispricing timing on merger and acquisition (M&A) performance considering the mediating role of payment method by selecting Chinese A-share-listed companies from 2007 to 2021. This study uses a quantitative method based on multivariate regression analysis. The primary data collection technique used is an archival research method. The finding of this study is that stock mispricing timing significantly affects M&A performance. Announcing acquisitions during periods of stock overvaluation significantly enhances short-term market performance but may lead to diminished long-term market and financial performance. Conversely, acquisitions announced during periods of stock undervaluation are associated with less favourable short-term market performance but potentially foster long-term performance improvement. Payment methods partially mediate these effects with the stock payment method augmenting short-term performance and the cash payment method facilitating long-term performance. These findings underscore the importance of considering stock mispricing timing and payment method choice in M&A decisions to optimize overall performance outcomes. The study provides new evidence and perspectives on the impact of the capital market on the operation of the real economy which has significant policy implications for the healthy development of the current Chinese capital market and M&A market.

Resumen
Spatial data play a crucial role in archaeological research, and orthophotos, digital elevation models, and 3D models are frequently used for the mapping, documentation, and monitoring of archaeological sites. Thanks to the availability of compact and low-cost uncrewed airborne vehicles, the use of UAV-based photogrammetry matured in this field over the past two decades. More recently, compact airborne systems are also available that allow the recording of thermal data, multispectral data, and airborne laser scanning. In this article, various platforms and sensors are applied at the Chalcolithic archaeological sites in the Mostiștea Basin and Danube Valley (Southern Romania). By analysing the performance of the systems and the resulting data, insight is given into the selection of the appropriate system for the right application. This analysis requires thorough knowledge of data acquisition and data processing, as well. As both laser scanning and photogrammetry typically result in very large amounts of data, a special focus is also required on the storage and publication of the data. Hence, the objective of this article is to provide a full overview of various aspects of 3D data acquisition for UAV-based mapping. Based on the conclusions drawn in this article, it is stated that photogrammetry and laser scanning can result in data with similar geometrical properties when acquisition parameters are appropriately set. On the one hand, the used ALS-based system outperforms the photogrammetric platforms in terms of operational time and the area covered. On the other hand, conventional photogrammetry provides flexibility that might be required for very low-altitude flights, or emergency mapping. Furthermore, as the used ALS sensor only provides a geometrical representation of the topography, photogrammetric sensors are still required to obtain true colour or false colour composites of the surface. Lastly, the variety of data, such as pre- and post-rendered raster data, 3D models, and point clouds, requires the implementation of multiple methods for the online publication of data. Various client-side and server-side solutions are presented to make the data available for other researchers.

Resumen
Developing new electrode materials or electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries requires reliable electrochemical testing thereof. In academic research, coin-type cells and small pouch-type cells are commonly being assembled for this purpose. In our study [1], using commercial highly homogeneous and robust LiNi0.33Mn0.33Co0.33O2 (NMC111) cathodes, graphite anodes and 1M LiPF6 in EC/DMC with 3% VC as the electrolyte, four experienced researchers from the Institute for Applied Materials at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology assembled a variety of coin cells within a round robin test. For different cell building parameters, the battery lifetimes systematically varied from a few hundred to well over 2000 cycles before a capacity retention of 80 % was reached. As a benchmark, the same electrodes and electrolyte were incorporated as single- and multi-layer electrode stacks into pouch-type cells and reach almost 4000 cycles with a rate of 1 C. Missplacing of electrodes and varying amount of electrolyte within a coin-cell were already addressed as performance influencing factors in the literature. In this study, one clear outcome with high impact on previously collected electrochemical data on coin cells, is that the steel grade of cell parts, as well as the in-housed total height of the electrode stack have dramatic influence on cell lifetime and the quality of the acquired electrochemical data. We present our best practice for coin cell manufacturing resulting from the round robin test. Further, it is shown that inappropriate testing conditions like poor cell contacting and cycler settings have additional impact on data collection. In this regard, we emphasize essential parameters for obtaining high quality data. Additionally, using the same electrodes, we show direct rate performance differences of calendered vs. uncalendered electrodes, as well as half vs. full-cell test results by means of rate capability and long-term cycling stability. While compression of anodes is less crucial for rate capability, substantial differences are measured in case of the cathodes, highlighting the importance of sufficient cathode densification. Moreover, for long-term capacity retention studies, it is demonstrated that electrode densification of both, cathode and anode is crucial for high long-term capacity retention. Our results are bridging the gap between lab research and industry-type battery cells. It is shown how key performance parameters can be projected from corresponding lab scale battery cell data, if certain important criteria are met vs. where the projections have their limits. [1] A. Resumen
Abstract. This work presents a data acquisition framework and the technical details of a permanent terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) measurement station for high spatial and temporal resolution forest observation that was developed in the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute. The TLS measurement station was established to provide hyper-temporal time series of three-dimensional point cloud data for long term monitoring of a boreal forest. Time series data acquisition framework consists of regular 14-minute scans performed by a RIEGL VZ-2000i laser scanner in every 30 minutes, resulting in the collection of 48 scans per day. The entire framework includes the setting up of the laser scanner, the initialization of daily project, the scanning data acquisition over a preset time window, the storage management of the collected data at a local measurement computer, and the transfer of data from the measurement computer to network-attached storage (NAS) for further data processes. The operability of the proposed TLS measurement station was first piloted at a test area of about 32,500 m2 in Southern Finland (60°09'N, 24°32'E). A set of several long monitoring experiments were performed over the whole growing season from the beginning of April to the end of October in 2019. As preliminary results, the time series outputs have captured detailed information on the phenological changes in the test site with sub-centimetre accuracy. For instance, it was possible to visualize plant dynamics phenomena, such as the sprouting of leaves in spring and their falling in autumn.

Resumen
In this work, we propose a wireless wearable system for the acquisition of multiple biopotentials through charge transfer electrostatic sensors realized in MEMS technology. The system is designed for low power consumption and low invasiveness, and thus candidates for long-time monitoring in free-living conditions, with data recording on an SD or wireless transmission to an external elaborator. Thanks to the wide horizon of applications, research is very active in this field, and in the last few years, some devices have been introduced on the market. The main problem with those devices is that their operation is time-limited, so they do not match the growing demand for long monitoring, which is a must-have feature in diagnosing specific diseases. Furthermore, their versatility is hampered by the fact that they have been designed to record just one type of signal. Using ST-Qvar sensors, we acquired an electrocardiogram trace and single-channel scalp electroencephalogram from the frontal lobes, together with an electrooculogram. Excellent results from all three types of acquisition tests were obtained. The power consumption is very low, demonstrating that, thanks to the MEMS technology, a continuous acquisition is feasible for several days.

Resumen
Wearable sensors facilitate the evaluation of gait and balance impairment in the free-living environment, often with observation periods spanning weeks, months, and even years. Data supporting the minimal duration of sensor wear, which is necessary to capture representative variability in impairment measures, are needed to balance patient burden, data quality, and study cost. Prior investigations have examined the duration required for resolving a variety of movement variables (e.g., gait speed, sit-to-stand tests), but these studies use differing methodologies and have only examined a small subset of potential measures of gait and balance impairment. Notably, postural sway measures have not yet been considered in these analyses. Here, we propose a three-level framework for examining this problem. Difference testing and intra-class correlations (ICC) are used to examine the agreement in features computed from potential wear durations (levels one and two). The association between features and established patient reported outcomes at each wear duration is also considered (level three) for determining the necessary wear duration. Utilizing wearable accelerometer data continuously collected from 22 persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) for 6 weeks, this framework suggests that 2 to 3 days of monitoring may be sufficient to capture most of the variability in gait and sway; however, longer periods (e.g., 3 to 6 days) may be needed to establish strong correlations to patient-reported clinical measures. Regression analysis indicates that the required wear duration depends on both the observation frequency and variability of the measure being considered. This approach provides a framework for evaluating wear duration as one aspect of the comprehensive assessment, which is necessary to ensure that wearable sensor-based methods for capturing gait and balance impairment in the free-living environment are fit for purpose.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this study is to determine whether the economic environment affects the merger and acquisition (M&A) activities in the restaurant industry. Design/methodology/approach The M&A transactions in the restaurant industry between 1981 and 2013 (n = 1,415) were examined. Data were collected from the Securities Data Corporation (SDC) database. Using an autoregressive distributed lag approach, this study developed three error correction models to explore the short- and long-term relationships between restaurant M&A activities and four macro-economic factors. Findings This study found that there was a long-term equilibrium relationship between the M&A activities and the four economic factors and that economic outlook had a significantly positive impact in the long term, while the effect of cost of debt was significantly negative in both the short and long terms. The findings suggest that restaurant firms are more likely to adopt M&A strategy when they are optimistic about the future economy and can take on debt at a low cost. Practical implications The findings of this study are expected to help practitioners make informative M&A decisions in the restaurant industry taking into consideration the economic environment. They will also help investors effectively manage their portfolios by predicting and ascertaining the proper time to invest in the restaurant industry based on the changes of economic environment. Originality/value No known study has been identified that examined the relationship between macro-economic factors and M&A activities in the restaurant industry. The findings of the study are expected to fill the gap in the literature by demonstrating the economic environment and the M&A activities in the restaurant industry are in a long-term equilibrium achieved by self-correction of their short-term disequilibrium.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of cross-border acquisitions (CBAs) on the financial and operating performance of acquiring firms from emerging economies in the long-term; the acquiring firms have been segregated into frequent (multiple) and first-time (single) acquirers based on their prior cross-border experience. The intent is to identify if overseas activities bring over and above advantage to multiple acquirers in terms of enhanced financial synergies and reduced costs, motivating them to engage in sequential international transactions. Design/methodology/approach The paper analyses the impact of CBAs announced and completed during 2004–2013 by Indian companies listed on the NIFTY 500 index. The post-acquisition financial and operating performance of Indian cross-border acquirers has been compared with their pre-acquisition performance. The average performance over three-years immediately preceding the acquisition year constitutes the benchmark for the post-acquisition performance. The post-acquisition period includes a year of integration followed by three successive post-integration years. Therefore, in operational terms, the research period extends from 2001–2017. The long-term performance of frequent (multiple) and first-time (single) Indian acquirers has been investigated comprehensively using a set of 16 financial ratios. The performance has been assessed using the secondary data collected from financial statements of acquiring companies; the financial statements and the list of CBAs by Indian companies have been obtained from Thomson Reuter’s EIKON database. Findings The financial and operating performance of frequent as well as first-time acquirers have depicted a similarly deteriorating trend during the post-acquisition period. These findings indicate that the international expansion of Indian companies is not guided by synergy creation potential and may be pushed by the overconfidence or over-optimism and agency conflicts of managers. This, perhaps, indicates that firms are being imprudent in investing free cash flows available with them. Originality/value The study is the first of its kind. No study, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, has analysed the performance of acquiring firms by segregating them into frequent and first-time acquirers using accounting measures of performance. More so, an extensive analysis of the long-term financial and operating performance of acquiring companies is rare to come across in the extant literature.

Resumen
Pakistan provides seasonal hunting permits to the rulers of Gulf countries for hunting of Asian Houbara bustard ( Chlamydotis macqueenii) in different parts of the country. This research deals with (transnational) seasonal land acquisition of different rangelands/deserts of the Punjab province of Pakistan. So far, no comprehensive research has been conducted in Pakistan on this issue. This research attempts to address the impact of seasonal land grabbing by the foreigners on livelihood assets of local stakeholders in South Punjab, Pakistan. Based on the idea of ‘control grabbing’, this research uses ‘sustainable livelihood framework’ as an analytical framework. Quantitative and qualitative data were acquired from three (out of a total nine) randomly selected hunting sanctuaries in the districts of Rajanpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. The results revealed that natural assets of local population (agricultural land and rangeland) are adversely affected during the entire hunting season. Limited access to natural assets (especially livestock fodder) has long-term negative impacts on livelihood diversification of the locals as the number of livestock – one of the most important assets of respondents – is continuously decreasing in the case study area. We recommend that land enclosure should be restricted to a limited area for a limited time, and that the Government should develop an effective monitoring and evaluation system.

Resumen
Long-term and mid-term mobility decision processes in different life trajectories generate complex dynamics, in which consecutive life events are interrelated and time dependent. This study uses the Bayesian network approach to study the dynamic relationships among residential events, household structure events, employment/education events, and car ownership events. Using retrospective data obtained from a web-based survey in Beijing, China, first structure learning is used to discover the direct and indirect relationships between these mobility decisions. Parameter learning is then applied to describe the conditional probabilities and predict the direct and indirect effects of actions and policies in the resulting network. The results confirm the interdependencies between these long-term and mid-term mobility decisions, and evidence the reactive and proactive behavior of individuals and households in the context of various life events over the course of their lives. In this regard, it is important to note that an increase in household size has a contemporaneous effect on car acquisition in the future; while residential events have a synergic relationship with employment/education events. Moreover, if people’s residential location or workplace/study location moves from an urban district to a suburban or outer suburban district, this has both lagged and concurrent effects on car acquisition.

Resumen
Noise pollution in urban environments is becoming increasingly common and it has potential to negatively impact people’s health and decrease overall productivity. In order to alleviate these effects, it is important to better quantify noise patterns and levels through data collection and analysis. Wireless sensor networks offer a method for achieving this with a higher level of granularity than traditional handheld devices. In this study, a wireless sensing unit (WSU) was developed that possesses the same functionality as a handheld sound level meter. The WSU is comprised of a microcontroller unit that enables on-board computations, a wireless transceiver that uses Zigbee protocol for data transmission, and an external peripheral board that houses the microphone transducer. The WSU utilizes on-board data processing techniques to monitor noise by computing equivalent continuous sound levels, LeqT, which effectively minimizes data transmission and increases the overall longevity of the node. Strategies are also employed to ensure real-time functionality is maintained on the sensing unit, with a focus on preventing bottlenecks between data acquisition, data processing, and wireless transmission. Four units were deployed in two weeks field validation test and were shown to be capable of monitoring noise for extended periods of time.

Impressed current cathodic protection controlled by computer gives the ideal solution to the changes in environmental factors and long term coating degradation. The protection potential distribution achieved and the current demand on the anode can be regulated to protection criteria, to achieve the effective protection for the system. In this paper, cathodic protection problem of above ground steel storage tank was investigated by an impressed current of cathodic protection with controlled potential of electrical system to manage the variation in soil resistivity. Corrosion controller has been implemented for above ground tank in LabView where tank's bottom potential to soil was manipulated to the desired set point (protection criterion 850 mV). National Instruments Data Acquisition (NI-DAQ) and PC controllers for tank corrosion control system provides quick response to achieve steady state condition for any kind of disturbances.

Resumen
Lateral velocity is an important parameter to characterize vehicle stability. The acquisition of lateral velocity is of great significance to vehicle stability control and the trajectory following control of autonomous vehicles. Aiming to resolve the problems of poor estimation accuracy caused by the insufficient modeling of traditional model-based methods and significant decline in performance in the case of a change in road friction coefficient, a deep learning method for lateral velocity estimation using an LSTM, long-term and short-term memory network, is designed. LSTM can well reflect the inertial characteristics of vehicles. The training data set contains sensor data under various working conditions and roads. The simulation results show that the prediction model has high accuracy in general and robustness to the change of road friction coefficient.

Resumen
In this paper we describe an environment that enables the interaction and data-fetching through a computer system from the Xiaomi Mi Band 2, a very popular and inexpensive Bluetooth Low Energy Fitness device, thus making it suitable for health-care long-term projects in which continuously gathering sleep and activity data is required. The environment is composed by a communication server running a custom library, exposed through both a shell command prompt and a RESTful API so it can be used by any other system connected to this server. The library is capable of connecting to an arbitrary number of devices at a time, bypassing many restrictions of the manufacturer’s proprietary application and not depending on an outgoing network connection to synchronize data between the system and the devices. In this paper we cover not only the process to enable communication with the target device from computers but also the architectural aspects of the developed system. We also provide brief information about the prototypes developed to test the system on a real ongoing geriatric study.

Resumen
This paper presents the first experimental pavement test road section in Lithuania including pavement design, annual measurements, data acquisition and response analysis. The road of experimental pavement structures was constructed in 2007. It’s laid on the road to the query, one traffic lane is used by loaded traffic and other – by unloaded traffic. The road consists of 27 different pavement structures with the same class of pavement structure but the different type and composition of materials. Final results after five years of monitoring indicate the performance of typical Lithuania flexible pavement structures influenced by different traffic loads. The total number of ESAL’s (100 kN) in February 2013 was 353 000.

Resumen
Continuing the works debuted in the previous work “Improved Timing for better performance of distributed data acquisition systems” the present paper refines and revisits the concept of a local oscillator with GPS corrections as a source of long-term stable reference clock signals with direct application in distributed data acquisition systems. The system as described herein can generate precise and repeatable clock source signals for trigger and sync of various data acquisition equipment when used in mixed and distributed architectures. These timing signals are a vital part of data acquisition as oftentimes raw data is processed as time series and correlations are made based on timestamps. This paper details improvements in implementation of a cost-effective high precision time base (reference clock) using a GPS receiver as a primary time source and a local high precision real time clock as a secondary oscillator. The improvements to the previous version come both from hardware refinements and from updated software with reduced latencies and reconfigured structure that allows for compensation of internal delays and internal process offsets.
