The nature of historical documentation in Languedoc has tended to draw the attention of ruralist historians to the heart of cultivated area and the famous trilogy of cereals, vines and olive trees. Margin, that is to say the vast amount of reputedly uncultivated land, has held little interest. However, most of these lands were indeed maintained and brought a great deal of resources to rural areas. Whether enjoyed communally or privately, they were areas cleared on a permanent or temporary basis, but they were also for grazing, food and wood gathering as well as various other purposes. On some of them grew the plant Spartium junceum L. , a marker of the human exploitation of land located at the interface between ager and saltus. The increasing maintenance of this broom growing in the Lodévois during the modern period is involved in processes of complex cropping at the borders of the cultivated area. A microhistorical approach – which opens onto neighboring regions of the Lodévois and the periods before and after – to this plant from uncultivated areas, crosses economic and social history with the history of technology, and in particular agronomy. Broom regenerated the poor soils of hills, providing textile fibers and nourishment for livestock during the winter. The exploitation of spartium, seemingly marginal, does indeed contribute in its own way to agricultural change from the eighteenth century onward

From notarial acts, and following an approach combining a material approach and a study of relationships between individuals, the survey focused on industry, workshops and companies in the Lergue and Hérault valleys, in Fifteenth century. The detour by the criticism of the sources led to a better knowledge of the notaries of Lodévois. The words of the notary were questioned, those that designate workplaces, professional activities and manufactured products, focusing the investigation on wool clothes, specially burel, white wool cloth and blanquets. The production system was examined from the materiality of the workshop and the tools, the financing of the company and the organization of the production unit, in particular the methods of recruitment and remuneration of the workforce in the textile industry. One of the specificities of the company from Lodévois is in its legal base, often linked to the family environment. In addition, its financing involves the movement of capital and labor from one sector of activity to another. Finally, it was necessary to study the circulation of products by questioning spaces, people and markets. According to a classic approach, the nature of the goods and the traffic networks used were reconstructed, starting from the local scale to reach more distant spaces reached by the wool clothes, lambs-fur and barber's grindstones of Lodévois. In a system of nested markets, the figure of the intermediary appears as one of the characteristics of medieval industry in Lodévois

This area is neither a real frontier, nor a simple buffer zone, but rather a region with a real cultural and economic identity. Two factors play a determinant part : the river and the natural resources, particularly copper ore. During all protohistory, the river has a preponderant place in the populating system. At the end of bronze age, habitats are concentrated in the vicinity of cupriferous deposits. At the iron age, this area is populated by elysics who are interested in these mining resources. From the end of the 6th. Cent. , the resources in copper ore provoke the encounter of indigenous with etruscans and greeks. The first exchanges get on those raw materials, rare and indispensable to mediterranean peoples. Tapping of vein and metal deposits, wine and crockery, reveal these exchanges which make tip up indigenous's economy and way of life. Numerous agglomerations are then created. The agdes' seizure of hinterland is justified by those resources. In the 2d iron age, "proto-cities" as the oppidum of la ramasse give evidence of the great importance of those contacts (architecture, commercial relations. . . ). Without any doubt, it is the metal which vindicates the cadastration of mining areas from the outset of the narbonnaise creation, colonists having for first desire to manage those productive zones, politically sensible. It is also the metal which can explain the creation of lodeve-forum neroni whose territory delivers important traces of mining tapping
